This study investigates the wear performance of 20CrMnTi steel, a commonly used material for spiral bevel gears, after heat treatment, with a focus on the microstructural evolution and wear behavior in both the surface and gradient direction of the carburized layer. The results show that the microstructure composition in the gradient direction of the carburized layer gradually transitions from martensite and residual austenite to a martensite–bainite mixed structure, and eventually transforms to fully bainitic in the matrix. With the extension of carburizing time, both the effective carburized layer depth and the hardened layer depth significantly increase. Wear track morphology analysis reveals that the wear track depth gradually becomes shallower and narrower, and the wear rate increases significantly with increasing load. However, the friction coefficient shows little sensitivity to changes in carburizing time and load. Further investigations show that as the carburized layer depth increases, the carbon concentration and hardness of the samples gradually decrease, resulting in an increase in the average wear rate and a progressive worsening of wear severity. After the wear tests, different depths of plowing grooves, spalling, and fish-scale-like features were observed in the wear regions. Additionally, with the increase in load and carburized layer depth, both the width and depth of the wear tracks significantly increased. The research results provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the surface carburizing process of 20CrMnTi steel and improving its wear resistance. Full article

Bycatch is the most common cause of death of small delphinids worldwide, including the Mediterranean Sea. The diagnosis of bycatch as cause of death in stranded cetaceans depends on the cumulative presence of multiple findings, termed bycatch criteria. In this study, we retrospectively evaluated the presence of bycatch criteria in 138 necropsied cetaceans, 136 stranded and 2 confirmed bycaught, in the Catalan Mediterranean Sea across a 13-year period. With the aim of identifying the most specific and reliable bycatch criteria, the animals’ cause of death was classified as either bycaught or other causes. Animals were necropsied according to standard procedures with complete histopathological examination and ancillary diagnostic techniques. We reviewed the necropsy reports and photographs of 138 cetaceans of seven species. Bycatch had been determined as the cause of death/stranding in 40 (29%) necropsied cetaceans. Both sexes were equally represented in the bycatch group. Bycatch was diagnosed in the Mediterranean common bottlenose dolphin (10/14; 71.4%), striped dolphin (29/108; 26.9%), and Risso’s dolphin (1/11; 9.1%). Sixty-seven out of 98 (68.3%) cetaceans that had been classified as non-bycatch had one or two bycatch criteria. Cetaceans with two and three major criteria had an overlap of causes of death, as some animals were diagnosed with bycatch and others with other causes of mortality. Animals with four criteria were invariably diagnosed as being bycaught. Recent feeding, absence of disease, good nutritional status, marks of fishing gear, multiorgan intravascular gas bubbles, hyphema and amputations or sharp incisions presumably inflicted by humans were significantly more likely to result in a diagnosis of bycatch, while loss of teeth and cranial fractures were not. None of the dolphins diagnosed as bycatch had ingested fishing gear. Our results highlight the relevance of bycatch as the cause of death of dolphins in the Mediterranean and suggest that some criteria traditionally linked to bycatch are not specific for bycatch in our region. Elasmobranch species are considered a global conservation priority due to their susceptibility to fishing pressure. In the Madeira Archipelago, Northeastern Atlantic, most elasmobranch species are caught as bycatch in artisanal drifting longline fishery targeting scabbardfishes. All commercial elasmobranch landings carried out in this archipelago over three decades (1990–2020) were analysed, aiming to provide a reliable overview of Madeira’s elasmobranch fisheries and their evolution. A total of 2316 tonnes of elasmobranchs were landed during the study period, corresponding to approximately EUR 2.1 million in first-sale value. The most representative period occurred from 2003 to 2013, corresponding to 75.21% of the total elasmobranch landings. A general pattern of supply and demand was evident, with mean price values typically showing an inverse trend to landed tonnage. At the species level, Centrophorus squamosus appears as the dominant species, representing about 89% of the total elasmobranch species landed, followed by Prionace glauca, with approximately 3%. The high dominance of C. squamosus in the scabbardfish fishery raises significant ecological and management concerns, as this deep-water shark species is known for its vulnerability to overexploitation. Management measures currently in place need to be updated and ought to be based on studies on the type and size of hooks for each fishery, to ultimately infer about species-specific survival rates, as well as the fishing gears’ soak time. Moreover, studies on the enhancement of food supply through fisheries discards are still missing, even though it is highly likely that this input may alter the dynamics of marine food webs. Madagascar harbors a rich marine biodiversity, yet detailed knowledge of its fish species remains limited. Of the 1689 species listed in 2018, only 22% had accessible cytochrome oxidase I (COI) sequences in public databases. In response to growing pressure on fishery resources, this study aims to strengthen biodiversity monitoring tools. Its objectives were to enrich the COI database for Malagasy marine fishes, create the first 12S reference library, and evaluate the taxonomic resolution of different 12S metabarcodes for eDNA analysis, namely MiFish, Teleo1, AcMDB, Ac12S, and 12SF1/R1. An integrated approach combining morphological, molecular, and phylogenetic analyses was applied for specimen identification of fish captured using various types of fishing gear in Toliara and Ranobe Bays from 2018 to 2023. The Malagasy COI database now includes 2146 sequences grouped into 502 Barcode Index Numbers (BINs) from 82 families, with 14 BINs newly added to BOLD (The Barcode of Life Data Systems), and 133 cryptic species. The 12S library comprises 524 sequences representing 446 species from 78 families. Together, the genetic datasets cover 514 species from 84 families, with the most diverse being Labridae, Apogonidae, Gobiidae, Pomacentridae, and Carangidae. However, the two markers show variable taxonomic resolution: 67 species belonging to 35 families were represented solely in the COI dataset, while 10 species from nine families were identified exclusively in the 12S dataset. For 319 species with complete 12S gene sequences associated with COI BINs (Barcode Index Numbers), 12S primer sets were used to evaluate the taxonomic resolution of five 12S metabarcodes. The MiFish marker proved to be the most effective, with an optimal similarity threshold of 98.5%. This study represents a major step forward in documenting and monitoring Madagascar’s marine biodiversity and provides a valuable genetic reference for future environmental DNA (eDNA) applications. Plastic pollution in marine environments is a globally recognized concern that poses ecological and economic threats. While 80% of plastic originates from land, 20% comes from sea-based sources like shipping and fishing. Comprehensive assessments of fishing-related plastics are limited but crucial for mitigation. This study analyzed the distribution and temporal evolution of three fishing-related items (EPS fish boxes, fragments, and buoys) along the Bocassette spit in the northern Adriatic Sea, a region with high fishing and aquaculture activity. UAV monitoring (November 2019, June/October 2020) and structured interviews with Po Delta fishermen were conducted. The collected debris was mainly EPS, with boxes (54.8%) and fragments (39.6%). Fishermen showed strong awareness of degradation, identifying plastic as the primary litter type and reporting gear loss. Litter concentrated in active dunes and the southern sector indicates human and riverine influence. Persistent items (61%) at higher elevations suggest longer residence times. Mapped EPS boxes could generate billions of micro-particles (e.g., ~1013). The results reveal a complex interaction between natural processes and human activities in litter distribution. This highlights the need for integrated management strategies, like improved waste management, targeted cleanup, and community involvement, to reduce long-term impacts on vulnerable coastal ecosystems. This paper introduces a novel bio-inspired metaheuristic algorithm, named the sharpbelly fish optimizer (SFO), inspired by the collective ecological behaviors of the sharpbelly fish. The algorithm integrates four biologically motivated strategies—(1) fitness-driven fast swimming, (2) convergence-guided gathering, (3) stagnation-triggered dispersal, and (4) disturbance-induced escape—which synergistically enhance the balance between global exploration and local exploitation. To assess its performance, the proposed SFO is evaluated on the CEC2022 benchmark suite under various dimensions. The experimental results demonstrate that SFO consistently achieves competitive or superior optimization accuracy and convergence speed compared to seven state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms. Furthermore, the algorithm is applied to three classical constrained engineering design problems: pressure vessel, speed reducer, and gear train design. In these applications, SFO exhibits strong robustness and solution quality, validating its potential as a general-purpose optimization tool for complex real-world problems. These findings highlight SFO’s effectiveness in tackling nonlinear, constrained, and multimodal optimization tasks, with promising applicability in diverse engineering scenarios. Full article

This study estimated the density distribution of Antarctic krill inhabiting an area near the South Shetland Islands using two acoustic analysis methods recommended by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, based on data collected using an echosounder installed on commercial fishing vessels. Mean Antarctic krill density for the entire survey area was estimated with two methods recommended by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. The mean body length of krill collected using trawl gear was 49.06 ± 4.15 mm (range: 22.0–67.0 mm), with mode of krill observed at 50 mm body length. Using the swarm-based method and the frequency differences according to krill size, the mean densities of krill for stations and transects were 14.86 g/m2 (CV = 47.09%) and 13.10 g/m2 (CV = 41.16%), respectively. Furthermore, using the dB-difference method for the entire survey area, the average densities were 10.76 g/m2 (CV = 43.83%) and 10.14 g/m2 (CV = 53.48%), respectively, using the frequency difference based on krill size determined at all stations and per transect. The world’s largest mangrove, Sundarbans, Bangladesh, is the habitat of the euryhaline catfish Nona Tengra (Mystus gulio). This study aimed to assess the stock status of M. gulio and provide reference points for sustainable fisheries’ management. One-year length–frequency (LF) data were collected from the Sundarbans region of Bangladesh and analyzed using the Length-Based Bayesian Biomass (LBB) method and the Length-Based Spawning Potential Ratio (LBSPR) model. The findings showed healthy biomass (B/BMSY = 1.2), with 57% of the wild stock of this species being harvested (B/B0 = 0.43). The calculated fishing mortality ratio indicated the underfishing conditions (F/M = 0.9). Safe exploitation (E = 0.46) was depicted, as E was smaller than the permitted level of 0.5. The value of capture length (Lc = 12.8 cm) was larger than the optimum capture length (Lc_opt = 10.0 cm) and the optimum length for maximum yield per recruit (Lopt = 12.0 cm) and larger than the maturity length (Lm = 9.16 cm), indicating the capture of mature individuals. The calculated Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR = 48%) was higher than the target reference points (SPR = 40%). This research evaluated the sustainable stock status. Although the margin between Lc_opt and Lm is very narrow, setting the minimum capture size at Lopt would be a conservative buffer to ensure long-term sustainability. The recommended minimum harvest size is 12 cm for M. gulio. Current fishing gear selectivity can ensure the sustainability of M. gulio in Sundarbans, Bangladesh; however, maintaining current fishing practice through careful management is suggested. Further assessments with length-based and other low-data methods should be conducted to refine exploitation estimates and trends. Full article

The National Institute of Fisheries Science in Korea is developing marine mammal bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) for midwater trawl gear. In this study, we tested two BRD-type guide nets (inclined net panel) with 30° and 45° tilt angles to prevent marine mammals from reaching the codend and facilitating their escape from the net. Fishing operations were conducted along the east and south coasts of South Korea, and cameras were installed in front of the BRDs to monitor their performance. The catch loss of herring with the 30° guide net was 13% and 11% in number and weight. The catch loss of hairtail was 53% and 51% in number and weight with the 30° guide net. Mackerel showed a 97% catch loss in number and weight with the 45° guide net. The 30° guide net resulted in lower catch loss for rudderfish and jack mackerel compared to the 45° guide net. The jellyfish discard rate of the BRD was 5% and 7% in number and weight with the 30° guide net and 12% and 11% with the 45° guide net, indicating that the 30° guide net was more effective at discarding jellyfish. Mesh selectivity was not strongly related to target species body length. Full article

Small-scale inshore fisheries significantly contribute to the total landing volumes and have an important role in Vietnamese socioeconomic development, food security, livelihoods, and social well-being. The setnet fishery has been used throughout coastal communities of Vietnam for many decades. Being a passive fishing gear, the catch efficiency of setnet depends on various conditions such as fish density, season, oceanography, environment, and others. However, very little information exists about the relationship between catch rates and national conditions. Recognizing this research gap, this study examined the effect of temporal and environmental conditions on the catch rates of the narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) setnet fishery using long-term data from 2005 to 2016. Overall, the catch of narrow-barred Spanish mackerel decreased over the course of the study. The generalized additive model (GAM) showed that catch rates were significantly affected by sea surface temperature (SST), which peaked at 27 °C. After this temperature point, the catch rates significantly decreased. Temporal variables also contributed to the catch variation. The setnet caught the highest yield in April and May, and more fish were caught during periods of low nightlight intensity than during high illuminated periods. Our study contributes to the understanding of critical factors affecting the catch rates of valuable species, which helps to determine the optimal fishing process of the setnet fishery within the shifting of marine heatwaves. A LoRaWAN application architecture comprises three functional components: (i) nodes, which convert and wirelessly transmit data as LoRaWAN messages; (ii) gateways, which receive and forward these transmissions; and (iii) network servers, which process the received data for application delivery. The nodes convert data into LoRaWAN messages and transmit them wirelessly with the hope that one or more LoRaWAN gateway will receive the messages successfully. Then, the gateways pass on the received messages to a distant network server, where various processing steps occur before the messages are forwarded to the end application. If none of the gateways can receive the messages, then they will be lost. Although this default behaviour is suitable for some applications, there are others where ensuring messages are successfully delivered at a higher rate would be helpful. One such scenario is the application in this paper: monitoring maritime vessels and fishing equipment in offshore environments characterised by intermittent or absent shore connectivity. To address this challenge, the Custodian project was initiated to develop a maritime monitoring solution with enhanced connectivity capabilities. Two additional features are especially welcome in this scenario. The most important feature is the transmission of messages created in offshore areas to end users who are offshore, regardless of the unavailability of the ground network server. An example would be fishermen who are offshore and wish to position their fishing equipment, also offshore, based on location data transmitted from nodes via LoRaWAN, even when both entities are far away from the mainland. The second aspect concerns the potential use of gateway-to-gateway communications, through gateways on various ships, to transmit messages to the coast. This setup enables fishing gear and fishing vessels to be monitored from the coast, even in the absence of a direct connection. The functional constraints of conventional commercial gateways necessitated the conceptualisation and implementation of C-Mesh, a novel relay architecture that extends LoRaWAN functionality beyond standard protocol implementations. The C-Mesh integrates with the Custodian ecosystem, alongside C-Beacon and C-Point devices, while maintaining transparent compatibility with standard LoRaWAN infrastructure components through protocol-compliant gateway emulation. Thus, compatibility with both commercially available nodes and gateways and those already in deployment is guaranteed. We provide a comprehensive description of C-Mesh, describing its hardware architecture (communications, power, and self-monitoring abilities) and data processing ability (filtering duplicate messages, security, and encryption). Sea trials carried out on board a commercial fishing vessel in Sesimbra, Portugal, proved C-Mesh to be effective. Location messages derived from fishing gear left at sea were received by an end user aboard the fishing vessel, independently of the network server on land. Additionally, field tests demonstrated that a single C-Mesh deployment functioning as a signal repeater on a vessel with an antenna elevation of 15m above sea level achieved a quantifiable coverage extension of 13 km (representing a 20% increase in effective transmission range), demonstrating the capacity of C-Mesh to increase LoRaWAN’s coverage. Catch-And-Release Fishing: A Case Study in Poland

The purpose of this study is to determine the current state of angler knowledge, opinions, awareness, and use of catch-and-release (C&R) best practices and to identify the main socio-economic factors that determine attitudes and willingness to use C&R among Polish anglers. Knowledge of this issue contributes to more effective management of fisheries and fish stocks. The research was conducted through an online survey form using a technique called CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview). The questionnaire used consisted of 25 questions, including basic socio-economic questions, questions about seniority, frequency, location and method of fishing, and specific factual questions related to knowledge and practices regarding C&R. A total of 1574 respondents participated in the survey. The majority of respondents were male (97.5%). The survey showed that Polish anglers are overwhelmingly willing to practice C&R: 48.8% of respondents always and 44.0% often voluntarily release the fish they catch. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between the use of this practice and the age of the angler (r = 0.46; p = 0.0001). Anglers under the age of 55 were the most likely to use C&R (p = 0.0097). The majority of respondents believe that C&R is important for improving fish stocks, but their knowledge and practices in this area have serious shortcomings. Inadequate knowledge of issues such as barotrauma or safe hook types, as well as inappropriate practices such as photographing and unhooking fish, can negatively affect their survival and ultimately the status of living water resources and ecosystem quality. These shortcomings may be due to inadequate education of anglers and fishery managers. Full article

Abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) poses significant environmental threats, namely contributing to microplastic (MP) pollution. However, the release of MPs from ALDFG remains poorly studied, despite its crucial role in understanding plastic pollution in marine ecosystems. This study is, to the best of our knowledge, the first to assess the environmental impact of ALDFG as a source of MPs, using an integrated approach combining laboratory experiments, in situ field trials, and environmental surveys. Laboratory tests showed that in the presence of light and sediment, braided polyethylene net released 1 fibre after incubation, demonstrating that the studied plastic fishing nets had the potential to release MPs. In situ experiments in a semi-enclosed marine environment did not show a clear influence of submerged fishing nets on water MPs, due to the high MP contamination in the selected location (5322 ± 4936 MP m−3). Nonetheless, at ALDFG hotspots off northwest Portugal, an increased presence of MPs in water samples compared to locations without ALDFG suggested potential MP release. These findings demonstrate the potential of ALDFG to act as a source of MPs and showcase the need for further studies, in order to comprehensively investigate the degradation of different plastic fishing nets in the field. Reducing ALDFG pollution is critical to mitigating its environmental impact and preserving marine ecosystems. Full article

Fisheries management is a complex task aiming to ensure the long-term sustainability of fish populations and the ecosystems they depend on. To achieve those goals, it is essential that the fisheries are described with precise and non-ambiguous information. Different agencies are reporting fisheries data by relying on several vocabularies or thesauri. Just indicatively, for the description of aquatic species, there are different official and widely used data sources that can be used. As a result, there are different identifiers or names for describing the same resource. In this paper, we describe the construction of a global aquatic resource knowledge base, which is the result of the integration of different data sources using semantic web technologies. By focusing on aquatic species, we show that the information provided by different data sources is complementary, and we provide a unified way for accessing them. We finally describe how the same process was adopted for other information domains as well. Full article

This study investigated the feeding habits of moonfish (Mene maculata) in the waters of southwestern Taiwan in the Western Pacific Ocean using commercial trawling nets and Taiwanese purse seines. For this, we analyzed the body size and stomach content of moonfish specimens collected from the study area between January and December 2023. The length–weight relationship revealed hypoallometric growth patterns in both male and female specimens, with allometric coefficients of 2.6574 and 2.7219, respectively. Stomach content analysis indicated that the specimens primarily fed on Calanoida (zooplankton; %PSIRI = 36.79) and Benthosema pterotum (fish; %PSIRI = 19.23). Dietary composition varied with body size and sampling time. Larger individuals consumed higher proportions of fish. The percentage of empty stomachs was high, likely attributable to the fishing gear used and sampling time. Based on the results of this study, it is speculated that moonfish feed mainly before early morning or at other times during the day. Full article
