Rapid pavement repair demands materials that combine accelerated strength gains, dimensional stability, long-term durability, and sustainability. However, finding materials or formulations that offer these balances remains a critical challenge. This study systematically evaluates two polymer-modified belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) concretes—CSAP (powdered polymer) and CSA-LLP (liquid polymer admixture)—against a traditional Type III Portland cement (OPC) control under both laboratory and realistic outdoor conditions. Laboratory specimens were tested for fresh properties, early-age and later-age compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths, as well as drying shrinkage according to ASTM standards. Outdoor 5 × 4 × 12-inch slabs mimicking typical jointed plain concrete panels (JPCPs), instrumented with vibrating wire strain gauges and thermocouples, recorded the strain and temperature at 5 min intervals over 16 weeks, with 24 h wet-burlap curing to replicate field practices. Laboratory findings show that CSA mixes exceeded 3200 psi of compressive strength at 4 h, but cold outdoor casting (~48 °F) delayed the early-age strength development. The CSA-LLP exhibited the lowest drying shrinkage (0.036% at 16 weeks), and outdoor CSA slabs captured the initial ettringite-driven expansion, resulting in a net expansion (+200 µε) rather than contraction. Approximately 80% of the total strain evolved within the first 48 h, driven by autogenous and plastic effects. CSA mixes generated lower peak internal temperatures and reduced thermal strain amplitudes compared to the OPC, improving dimensional stability and mitigating restraint-induced cracking. These results underscore the necessity of field validation for shrinkage compensation mechanisms and highlight the critical roles of the polymer type and curing protocol in optimizing CSA-based repairs for durable, low-carbon pavement rehabilitation. While acetic acid has proven effective as a mild acidic treatment for removing adhered mortar from recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) surfaces, its potential for dissolving damage to the surface of the original natural coarse aggregate (NCA) within the RCA and its impact on the resultant concrete properties require careful consideration. This investigation systematically evaluates the effects of varying concentrations of dilute acetic acid solutions, commonly used in RCA treatment protocols, through a multi-methodological approach that includes comprehensive physical characterization, stylus and 3D optical profilometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nanoindentation analysis. The results show that even dilute acid solutions have an upper concentration limit, as excessive acid concentration, specifically 0.4 M, induces significant textural dislocations on NCA surfaces, creating millimeter-scale erosion pits that increase aggregate water absorption by 18.5%. These morphological changes significantly impair concrete workability and reduce compressive strength performance. Furthermore, microstructural analysis reveals a 45.24% expansion in interfacial transition zone (ITZ) thickness, accompanied by notable reductions in elastic modulus and microhardness characteristics. In practical RCA treatment applications, for RCA containing limestone-based NCA, it is recommended to use acetic acid concentrations between 0.1 and 0.3 M to avoid substantial physical and microstructural degradation of aggregates and concrete. Liquid calcium aluminate cement (LCAC) is an innovative material technology with significant potential for varied applications in civil engineering. However, despite its promising results, a significant gap remains in the direct application of LCAC as a concrete binder. The primary catalysts for LCAC are sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH). Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the effects of sodium and potassium ions on alkali–aggregate reactions in concrete structures. This study evaluated the durability of liquid calcium aluminate cement concrete catalyzed using four different concentrations of NaOH (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0%) as experimental variables, incorporating a control group of traditional concrete with a water–cement ratio of 0.64. The findings indicate that NaOH catalysis in the concrete significantly trigger alkali–aggregate reactions, leading to volume expansion. Furthermore, it increased chloride ion penetration and porosity in the concrete. These effects were more notable with the increase in NaOH concentration. The results suggested that NaOH catalysis can enhance certain chemical reactions within the concrete matrix; however, its concentration must be carefully controlled to mitigate adverse effects. The NaOH dosage should be limited to 0.5% to ensure optimal durability of the concrete. This study emphasizes the crucial importance of precisely balancing catalyst concentration to maintain the long-term durability and performance of liquid calcium aluminate cement concrete in structural applications. Timely and accurate identification of surface damage in hydraulic structures is essential for maintaining structural integrity and ensuring operational safety. Traditional manual inspections are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to subjectivity, especially for large-scale or inaccessible infrastructure. Leveraging advancements in aerial imaging, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enable efficient acquisition of high-resolution visual data across expansive hydraulic environments. However, existing deep learning (DL) models often lack architectural adaptations for the visual complexities of UAV imagery, including low-texture contrast, noise interference, and irregular crack patterns. To address these challenges, this study proposes a lightweight, robust, and high-precision segmentation framework, called LFPA-EAM-Fast-SCNN, specifically designed for pixel-level damage detection in UAV-captured images of hydraulic concrete surfaces. The developed DL-based model integrates an enhanced Fast-SCNN backbone for efficient feature extraction, a Lightweight Feature Pyramid Attention (LFPA) module for multi-scale context enhancement, and an Edge Attention Module (EAM) for refined boundary localization. The experimental results on a custom UAV-based dataset show that the proposed damage detection method achieves superior performance, with a precision of 0.949, a recall of 0.892, an F1 score of 0.906, and an IoU of 87.92%, outperforming U-Net, Attention U-Net, SegNet, DeepLab v3+, I-ST-UNet, and SegFormer. Additionally, it reaches a real-time inference speed of 56.31 FPS, significantly surpassing other models. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed framework’s strong generalization capability and robustness under varying noise levels and damage scenarios, underscoring its suitability for scalable, automated surface damage assessment in UAV-based remote sensing of civil infrastructure. The operation of heavy-haul railway trains with large loads results in significant cracking issues in reinforced concrete beams. Atmospheric carbon dioxide, oxygen, and moisture from the atmosphere penetrate into the beam interior through these cracks, accelerating the carbonation of the concrete and the corrosion of the steel bars. The rust-induced expansion of steel bars further exacerbates the cracking of the beam. The interaction between environmental factors and beam cracks leads to a rapid decline in the durability of the beam. To address this issue, a multi-physics field coupling durability assessment method was proposed, considering concrete beam cracking, concrete carbonation, and steel bar corrosion. The interaction among these three factors is achieved through sequential coupling, using crack width, carbonation passivation time, and steel bar corrosion rate as interaction parameters. Using this method, the deterioration morphology and stiffness degradation laws of 8 m reinforced concrete beams under different load conditions, including those of heavy and light trains in heavy-haul railways, are compared and assessed. The analysis reveals that within a 100-year service cycle, the maximum relative stiffness reduction for beams on the heavy train line is 20.0%, whereas for the light train line, it is only 7.4%. The degree of structural stiffness degradation is closely related to operational load levels, and beam cracking plays a critical role in this difference. Full article

In this research project a large linear electromagnetic actuator (LLEA) was designed and manufactured. The electromagnetic performance was published in previous works, but in this paper we focus on the technological challenges related to the manufacturing in particular. This LLEA was based on the magnet-free switched-reluctance principle, having six effective energised stator “teeth” and four passive mover parts (4:6 ratio). Various aspects and challenges encountered during the manufacturing, transport, and assembly are discussed. Thermal expansion of steel contributed to the decision of the modular design, with each module having 1.3 m in length, with a 2 mm longitudinal dilatation gap. The initial prototype was tested with a 10.6 m length, with plans to extend the test track to 60 m, which was fully achievable due to the modular design and required 29 tons of electrical steel to be built. The stator laminations were cut by a bespoke progressive tool with stamping, and other parts by a CO2 laser. Mounting was based on welding (back of the stator) and clamping plates (through insulated bolts). The linear longitudinal force was on the order of 8 kN, with the main air gap of 7.5–10 mm on either side of the mover. The lateral forces could exceed 40 kN and were supported by appropriate construction steel members bolted to the concrete floor. The overall mechanical tolerances after installation remained below 0.5 mm. The technology used for constructing this prototype demonstrated the cost-effective way for a semi-industrial manufacturing scale. Full article

The utilization of recycled concrete aggregate presents an effective solution for construction waste mitigation. However, concrete service in sulfate environments leads to sulfate ion retention in recycled aggregates, substantially impairing their quality and requiring modification approaches. A critical question remains whether traditional recycled aggregate modification techniques can effectively enhance the performance of these sulfate-containing recycled aggregates (SRA). Cement paste wrapping in various proportions was used in this investigation to enhance SRA. The performance of both SRA and modified aggregates was systematically assessed through measurements of apparent density, water absorption, crushing value, and microhardness. Microstructural analysis of the cement wrapping modification mechanism was conducted by scanning electron microscopy coupled with mercury intrusion porosimetry. Results revealed that internal sulfate addition decreased the crushing value and increased the water absorption of recycled aggregates, primarily due to micro-cracks formed by expansion. Additionally, the pores were occupied by erosion products, leading to a slight increase in the apparent density of aggregates. The performance of SRA was effectively enhanced by cement paste wrapping at a 0.6 water–binder ratio, whereas it was negatively impacted by a ratio of 1.0. The modifying effect became even more effective when 15% fly ash was added to the wrapping paste. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that the interface of SRA was predominantly composed of gypsum crystals. Cement paste wrapping greatly enhanced the original interface structure, despite a new dense interface formed in the modified aggregates. Full article

Quality requirements for mineral aggregate for concrete used to construct pavement for busy highways are high because of the fatigue traffic loads and environmental exposure. The use of local aggregate for infrastructure projects could result in important sustainability improvements, provided that the concrete’s durability is assured. The objective of this study was to identify the potential alkaline reactivity of local greywacke aggregate and select appropriate mitigation measures against the alkali–silica reaction. Experimental tests on concrete specimens were performed using the miniature concrete prism test at 60 °C. Mixtures of coarse greywacke aggregate up to 12.5 mm with natural fine aggregate of different potential reactivity were evaluated in respect to the expansion, compressive strength, and elastic modulus of the concrete. Two preventive measures were studied—the use of metakaolin and slag-blended cement. A moderate reactivity potential of the greywacke aggregate was found, and the influence of reactive quartz sand on the expansion and instability of the mechanical properties of concrete was evaluated. Both crystalline and amorphous alkali–silica reaction products were detected in the cracks of the greywacke aggregate. Efficient expansion mitigation was obtained for the replacement of 15% of Portland cement by metakaolin or the use of CEM III/A cement with the slag content of 52%, even if greywacke aggregate was blended with moderately reactive quartz sand. It resulted in a relative reduction in expansion by 85–96%. The elastic modulus deterioration was less than 10%, confirming an increased stability of the elastic properties of concrete. Full article

Today, urban areas have started to grow and expand with the urbanization and industrialization processes brought about by rapid population growth. The increase in urban density brought about by this growth process has led to the destruction of natural areas and created surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, etc., that absorb solar energy. The expansion/proliferation of impervious surfaces in the city has changed the urban climate in the direction of temperature increase compared to the surrounding rural areas. When this change is combined with the temperature increases due to global climate change, it creates urban heat islands, especially in high density areas, and directly affects land surface temperatures. In this study, ground surface temperature analysis for the years 2012–2022 was carried out in order to determine the temperature changes in Denizli city. As a result of the analysis, eight urban textures with different characteristics with very high and high temperature increase were determined. Analyses were made in the context of urban heat island criteria in the determined textures, and the effect of the settlement pattern on urban heat island formation was examined by making use of the analysis results and related literature findings. Sustainability in the construction sector has become a fundamental objective for mitigating escalating environmental challenges; given that concrete is the most widely used man-made material, extending its service life is therefore critical. Among durability concerns, magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) attack is particularly deleterious to concrete structures. Therefore, this study investigates the short- and long-term performance of concrete produced with copper slag (CS)—a massive waste generated by copper mining activities worldwide—employed as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), together with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), obtained from concrete construction and demolition waste, when exposed to MgSO4. CS was used as a 15 vol% cement replacement, while RCA was incorporated at 0%, 20%, 50%, and 100 vol%. Compressive strength, bulk density, water absorption, and porosity were measured after water curing (7–388 days) and following immersion in a 5 wt.% MgSO4 solution for 180 and 360 days. Microstructural characteristics were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis with its differential thermogravimetric derivative (TG-DTG), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The results indicated that replacing 15% cement with CS reduced 7-day strength by ≤10%, yet parity with the reference mix was reached at 90 days. Strength losses increased monotonically with RCA content. Under MgSO4 exposure, all mixtures experienced an initial compressive strength gain during the short-term exposures (28–100 days), attributed to the pore-filling effect of expansive sulfate phases. However, at long-term exposure (180–360 days), a clear strength decline was observed, mainly due to internal cracking, brucite formation, and the transformation of C–S–H into non-cementitious M–S–H gel. Based on these findings, the combined use of CS and RCA at low replacement levels shows potential for producing environmentally friendly concrete with mechanical and durability performance comparable to those of concrete made entirely with virgin materials. Non-uniform temperature fields are developed during the welding of studs in steel–concrete composite bridges. Due to uneven thermal expansion and reversible solid-state phase transformations between ferrite/martensite and austenite structures within the materials, residual stresses are induced, which ultimately degrades the mechanical performance of the structure. For a better understanding of the influence on steel–concrete composite bridges’ structural behavior by residual stress, accurate simulation of the spatio-temporal temperature distribution during stud welding under practical engineering conditions is critical. This study introduces a precise simulation method for temperature evolution during stud welding, in which the Gaussian heat source model was applied. The simulated results were validated by real welding temperature fields measured by the infrared thermography technique. The maximum error between the measured and simulated peak temperatures was 5%, demonstrating good agreement between the measured and simulated temperature distributions. Sensitivity analyses on input current and plate thickness were conducted. The results showed a positive correlation between peak temperature and input current. With lower input current, flatter temperature gradients were observed in both the transverse and thickness directions of the steel plate. Additionally, plate thickness exhibited minimal influence on radial peak temperature, with a maximum observed difference of 130 °C. However, its effect on peak temperature in the thickness direction was significant, yielding a maximum difference of approximately 1000 °C. The thermal influence of group studs was also investigated in this study. The results demonstrated that welding a new stud adjacent to existing ones introduced only minor disturbances to the established temperature field. The maximum peak temperature difference before and after welding was approximately 100 °C. Full article

The construction of concrete pavements has increased due to their better durability, lifespan, and lower maintenance costs. However, this has resulted in the increased consumption of Portland cement, which is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions. Consequently, the research on alternative binders such as geopolymer concrete has increased in recent times. There are several research studies that investigate the feasibility of geopolymer concrete as a construction material, with limited studies exploring its application in concrete pavements. Therefore, this review study explores the material properties of geopolymer concrete pertinent to the performance of concrete pavements. It also discusses the potential of various industrial and agricultural waste as precursor material in geopolymer concrete. The findings of this paper show that most of the studies used fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) as precursor material in geopolymer pavement-quality concrete, and there is a vast scope in the exploration of other industrial and agricultural waste as precursor material. The mechanical and durability properties of geopolymer pavement-quality concrete are superior to conventional pavement concrete. It is also observed that the drying shrinkage and coefficient of thermal expansion of geopolymer pavement-quality concrete are lower than those of conventional pavement concrete, and this will positively benefit the long-term performance of concrete pavements. The results of fatigue analysis and mechanical load test on the geopolymer pavement-quality concrete indicate its improved performance when compared to the conventional pavement concrete. The European Health Technology Assessment (HTA) regulation (HTAR) came into effect in January 2025 and impacts the HTA process in all European Member States. Member States must give due consideration to the joint clinical assessment (JCA) report. This may require adaptations at the national level. This paper describes the anticipated changes to the Dutch national HTA process and how the Dutch National Health Care Institute (Zorginstituut Nederland, ZIN) prepared for this, because sharing experience between Member States can be of general interest for future expansion of the EU HTAR. ZIN’s implementation activities were facilitated by a project-governance structure and by a continuous gap analysis of the current national assessment and appraisal process of medicinal products, resulting in a concrete action plan. The implementation of the HTAR has two major implications for ZIN’s HTA process, namely that the scoping phase starts much earlier and that the JCA report is the starting point for the national assessment. Gaps, challenges and issues were identified in the categories: information and knowledge, IT and template, communication and stakeholder engagement, capacity and resources, and financial aspects. Based on a thorough and well-defined implementation plan, ZIN is ready to implement the HTAR in national HTA processes and to take on (co-)assessor roles for JCA of medicinal products in 2025. The alkali–silica reaction (ASR) is an important mechanism of concrete deterioration, whereby reactive silica in aggregate interacts with cement alkalis to form expanding gel, which compromises the structural integrity of the concrete. Although the Republic of Korea has historically been classified as a low-risk region for ASR due to its geological stability, documented examples of concrete damage since the late 1990s have necessitated a rigorous reassessment of local aggregates. This study evaluated the ASR potential of 84 aggregate samples sourced from diverse Korean geological regions using standardized protocols, including ASTM C 1260 for mortar bar expansion and ASTM C 289 for chemical reactivity, supplemented by soundness, acid drainage, and weathering index analyses. The results indicate expansion within the range of 0.1–0.2%, classified as potentially deleterious, for some rock types. In addition to ASR reactivity, isolated high anomalies (e.g., high soundness, acid producing, and weathering) suggest the existence of other durability risks. Consequently, while Korean aggregates predominantly have a low ASR reactivity, the adoption of various validated ASR tests as a routine test and the integration of supplementary cementitious materials are recommended to ensure long-term concrete durability, highlighting the need for sustained monitoring and further investigation into mitigation strategies. Full-section interval casting technology was adopted for the integral immersed tube of the Chebei Immersed Tunnel. Field tests (Chebei Immersed Tunnel) were conducted to establish the time-dependent development of the concrete shrinkage strain of the full-section casting segments. And laboratory experiments were then carried out to investigate the influence of factors such as the reinforcement ratio and stress, expansive agent content and composition, fly ash content, and curing temperature and humidity on the expansive effect of calcium–magnesium composite expansive agents. Field tests revealed that casting segments exhibit initial expansion followed by shrinkage, reaching a final strain of 348 με (microstrain). Laboratory investigations demonstrated that reinforcement (20–30 MPa stress) in post-casting belts effectively restrains segments without compromising the performance of calcium–magnesium composite expansive agents. The optimal 5:3:2 ratio of CaO, MgO 90s, and MgO 200s agents controlled shrinkage strain within 80 με by combining CaO’s rapid early expansion with MgO’s sustained effect. Field validation confirmed the mix’s effectiveness in preventing cracking, with key findings: (1) fly ash content and curing conditions significantly influence expansive behavior, and (2) shrinkage development can be precisely regulated through agent composition adjustments.
