Excess Commuting in Rural Minnesota: Ethnic and Industry Disparities

Research on commuting patterns has mainly focused on urban and metropolitan areas, and such studies are not typically applied to rural and small-town regions, where workers often face longer commutes due to limited job opportunities and inadequate public transportation. By using the Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) data, this research fills that gap by analyzing commuting behavior by ethnic group and industry in south-central Minnesota, which is a predominantly rural area of 13 counties in the United States. The results show that both white and minority groups in District 7 experienced an increase in excess commuting from 2006 to 2016, with the minority group in Nobles County showing a significantly higher rise. Analysis by industry reveals that excess commuting in the leisure and hospitality sector (including arts, entertainment, and food services) in Nobles County increased five-fold during this time, indicating a severe spatial mismatch between jobs and affordable housing. In contrast, manufacturing experienced a decline of 50%, possibly indicating better commuting efficiency or a loss of manufacturing jobs. These findings can help city and transportation planners conduct an in-depth analysis of rural-to-urban commuting patterns and develop potential solutions to improve rural transportation infrastructure and accessibility, such as promoting telecommuting and hybrid work options, expanding shuttle routes, and adding more on-demand transit services in rural areas. Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with significant racial and ethnic disparities in prevalence, disease severity, and outcomes. Cardiovascular complications, including pericarditis, myocarditis, valvular disease, and conduction abnormalities, contribute to increased morbidity and mortality in SLE patients. This study examines racial and ethnic disparities in cardiovascular outcomes among hospitalized SLE patients in the United States. Methods: This retrospective study utilized the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2016 to 2021 to analyze hospitalizations of adult patients (≥18 years) with a primary or secondary diagnosis of SLE. Patients were stratified into racial/ethnic groups: White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and Other. Primary outcomes include major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), which are a composite of in-hospital mortality, myocardial infarction (MI), sudden cardiac death, and other SLE-related outcomes including cardiac, pulmonary, and renal involvement. Statistical analyses included multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for demographic, socioeconomic, and hospital-related factors to assess racial disparities. Results: The study included 514,750 White, 321,395 Black, and 146,600 Hispanic patients, with smaller proportions of Asian, Native American, and Other racial groups. Black patients had significantly higher odds of in-hospital mortality (OR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.08–1.26, p < 0.001) and sudden cardiac death (OR = 1.64, 95% CI = 1.46–1.85, p < 0.001) compared to White patients. Asian patients also exhibited increased mortality risk (OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.14–1.63, p = 0.001) as compared to Whites. Conversely, Black (OR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.85–0.96, p = 0.01) and Hispanic (OR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.80–0.96, p = 0.03) patients had lower odds of MI. Racial disparities in access to care, socioeconomic status, and comorbidity burden may contribute to these differences. Conclusion: Significant racial and ethnic disparities exist in cardiovascular outcomes among hospitalized SLE patients. Black and Asian individuals face higher in-hospital all-causes mortality and sudden cardiac death risks, while Black and Hispanic patients exhibit lower MI rates. Addressing social determinants of health, improving access to specialized care, and implementing targeted interventions may reduce disparities and improve outcomes in minority populations with SLE. Spatial Disparities in University Admission Outcomes Among Ethnic Hungarian Students: Regional Analysis in the Central European Carpathian Basin

This research investigates higher education admission outcomes at Hungarian universities for ethnic Hungarian minority students residing in countries within the Carpathian Basin. The region is distinguished by a variety of national policies that impact minority education. By analyzing extensive data on the availability of mother tongue education, the status of minority rights, advanced level examination performance, and types of settlement using a wide range of statistical methods, our study reveals significant cross-national differences in the distribution of admission scores and central tendencies. Compared to lower and more varied scores for students from Ukraine and Romania, ethnic Hungarian students from Serbia and Slovakia achieved high average admission scores. Performance was notably more consistent among students from EU member states compared to non-EU regions, strongly linking outcomes to the more robust implementation of minority rights and better access to mother-tongue education within the EU framework. A critical finding is the strong positive correlation (Pearson r = 0.837) between admission scores and advanced level examination results, highlighting the pivotal role of these exams for the academic progression of these minority students. The Jonckheere-Terpstra test (p < 0.05) further confirmed significant performance differences between ranked country groups, with Serbian and Slovak students generally outperforming their Ukrainian and Romanian counterparts. Counterintuitively, settlement type (urban vs. rural) exhibited a negligible relationship with admission scores (r = 0.150), explaining only 2% of score variability. This challenges common assumptions and suggests other factors specific to the Hungarian minority context are more influential. This study provides crucial insights into the complex dynamics influencing Hungarian minority students’ access to higher education, underscoring cross-country educational inequalities, and informing the development of equitable minority rights and mother-tongue education policies in Central Europe for these often-marginalized communities. Residential segregation remains a persistent challenge in European urban environments and is an increasing focal point in urban policy debates. This study investigates the changing geographies of ethnic diversity and residential segregation in Riga, the capital city of Latvia. The research addresses the complex dynamics of ethnic residential patterns within the distinctive context of post-socialist urban transformation, examining how historical legacies of ethnic diversity interact with contemporary migration flows to reshape neighborhood ethnic composition. Using geo-referenced data from 2000, 2011, and 2021 census rounds, we examined changes in the spatial distribution of five major ethnic groups. Our analysis employs the Dissimilarity Index to measure ethnic residential segregation and the Location Quotient to identify the residential concentration of ethnic groups across the city. The findings reveal that Riga’s ethnic landscape is undergoing a gradual yet impactful transformation. The spatial distribution of ethnic groups is shifting, with the increasing segregation of certain groups, particularly traditional ethnic minorities, coupled with a growing concentration of Europeans and non-Europeans in the inner city. The findings reveal distinctive patterns of ethnic diversification and demographic change, wherein long-term trends intersect with contemporary migration dynamics to produce unique trajectories of ethnic residential segregation, which differ from those observed in Western European contexts. However, the specific dynamics in Riga, particularly the persistence of traditional ethnic minority communities and the emergence of new ethnic groups, highlight the unique context of post-socialist urban landscapes. Diabetes is the world’s leading cause of renal and premature cardiovascular disease. There are marked differences between groups of patients with different ethnicities in their susceptibility to diabetes and its renal and cardiovascular complications. Novel markers of developing diabetes complications are related to disturbances in oxidative metabolism. In this cross-sectional study, we measured the arterial stiffness in patients of differing ethnicities with type 2 diabetes mellitus and assessed the relationship of their ethnicity with systemic markers of oxidative stress. Patients from black, African and Caribbean, and Asian minor ethnic groups were studied, with white patients with T2DM (n = 170) without evidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The vascular stiffness was measured by infrared finger-photoplethysmography. The oxidative stress burden was assessed by measuring the urinary 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), activities of plasma glutathione peroxidase (GPx-3), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, and concentration of selenium. The vascular stiffness and 8-OHdG were higher in the white than in the Black patients (9.68 m/s vs. 9.26 m/s, p = 0.021 and 292.8 ng/mL vs. 200.9 ng/mL, p = 0.0027, respectively). Meanwhile, the GPx-3 and SOD activities and selenium were lower in the white than in the Black patients (283.3 U/L vs. 440.4 U/L, p < 0.0001; 37.5 U/L vs. 75.6 U/L, p = 0.0007; and 1.14 vs. 1.28 µmol/L, p = 0.0001, respectively). In regression modelling, the 8-OHdG/creatinine ratio was an independent predictor of vascular stiffness in the white patient group (β = 0.23 m/s per unit increase in ln(8-OHdG/creatinine) [95% CI, 0.03 to 0.42]; p = 0.021) but not in the Black patient group (p = 0.29). Increased vascular stiffness, lower endogenous antioxidant defense, and greater levels of oxidative damage were found in patients of white ethnicity, which could contribute to the higher incidence of CVD compared with patients from Black minor ethnic groups with diabetic renal disease. It is significant to study the correlation between the spatial distribution and topographic features for ethnic minority rural settlements, which can provide the theoretical basis and practical methods for the preservation of ethnic culture and scientific planning of territorial space. Liuzhou in Guangxi is a region with diverse ethnic groups and this paper takes Liuzhou as the case study. This study employs fractal theory, GIS spatial analysis, and correlation analysis methods to investigate the relationship between settlement spatial patterns and their surrounding geographical conditions. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between the geographic location of ethnic minority rural settlements (including site selection and terrain features) and their geographical conditions (topographic and elevation factors). Additionally, significant associations exist between settlement slope, settlement orientation, and their positioning within mountainous terrain. The study also reveals strong correlations between planar morphological characteristics (or settlement scale) and settlement terrain for the settlements of the same ethnic group within the same region. Specifically, Dong settlements exhibit remarkable consistency in settlement scale, while Miao settlements demonstrate high similarity in terms of elevation distribution. The methodology developed in this study is applicable to correlation research on settlement characteristics across diverse ethnic groups and geographical regions. It not only reveals universal patterns of how physical-geographic environments influence the planar and spatial features of settlements, but also validates the logical coherence of investigating layout characteristics from both planar and spatial perspectives. The findings of this study not only provide practical guidance for the development and planning of settlements, but also offer recommendations for the cultural inheritance and settlement protection of ethnic minorities. Disaster risk reduction (DRR) education is considered increasingly necessary, particularly for children. DRR educational interventions aim to enhance knowledge and attitudes related to self-protective capacity. However, comparative studies on students in areas prone to different disasters and comprehensive criteria covering both knowledge and attitudes toward behavior remain limited. A short DRR course was developed for primary schools across three regions (mountainous, low-lying, and coastal) in Hue City, one of Vietnam’s most vulnerable areas to extreme weather events. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate student performance by applying Bloom’s taxonomy and treatment-control pre-post-follow-up design with panel analysis methods. From December 2022 to September 2023, three surveys, involving 517 students each, were conducted in six schools (three schools received the course and surveys, while the other three only participated in surveys). The intervention revealed similarities and differences between the groups. The course positively impacted on some elements of knowledge and preparedness intentions in students from low-lying and mountainous regions (including ethnic minorities). Higher-grade students in the mountainous region showed improvement in intentions, but not in attitudes toward self-protection. No gender differences in intentions were found. Although limited overall improvements, the study’s various methods, approaches and continuous assessment can be applied globally to design, implement, and assess DRR education courses effectively. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), implemented in 2010, aimed to expand healthcare access, reduce costs, and address long-standing disparities in the U.S. healthcare system, particularly among racial and ethnic minorities. This paper reviews the ACA’s impact on healthcare utilization for these populations, with a focus on insurance coverage, preventive services, and health outcomes. While Medicaid expansion significantly reduced uninsured rates and increased access to care in states that adopted the expansion, millions of low-income individuals, many of whom are racial and ethnic minorities, remain uninsured in non-expansion states. The elimination of cost-sharing for preventive services under the ACA contributed to increased utilization of cancer screenings, vaccinations, and other preventive measures among minority groups. However, challenges persist, including affordability barriers, geographic disparities, and cultural and linguistic obstacles. This review also highlights the ongoing need for policy interventions, such as nationwide Medicaid expansion, and future research on the long-term effects of the ACA on health outcomes for minority populations. This article stems from the PRIN GOV_REL (Urban Governance of Interreligious Dialogue) research project carried out in four Italian cities in 2023–2025 and reports on some preliminary results of the empirical enquiry held in the city of Brescia. The Brescia area is characterised by high rates of residents with an immigrant background and a consolidated presence of religious minorities (Muslim, Orthodox, Sikh, Hindu and Protestant groups), many recognised centres (mosques, temples and Christian non-Catholic churches) and a significant commitment of ethnic–religious communities to local public life. This paper examines the creation of grassroots-level interreligious dialogue, seen as a communicative process. The empirical evidence is based on material collected by participant observations and semi-structured interviews regarding four initiatives that occurred in 2024. A sociocultural analysis outlines the communicative frame: text; context; aims; acts; interlocutors and their power/freedom of expression; interactions; results. The article examines the communicative pattern of each initiative, considering an intercultural orientation and a pluralistic model of interfaith dialogue. It seeks to answer the following questions: what was the fundamental message that the promoters wanted to convey? How do the single actors communicate their perspective of religious “others”, and what results did they achieve or not achieve? The analysis leads to identifying the patterns that facilitate and/or hamper dialogue, taking into account misunderstandings and “cul-de-sac” aspects. Final recommendations highlight the recurrent breaking points that should be prevented and some premises to guarantee successful communication between members of different religions in multicultural urban spaces. Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent mental health concerns among college students. In addition to the typical college stressors, Hispanic students may experience minority status stress associated with their membership in a socially stigmatized ethnic and cultural group. Ethnic minority status stress has been positively associated with psychological distress. Therefore, this study examined, among Hispanic college students, (a) gender differences in the associations of ethnic minority status stress and social support to depression and anxiety symptoms, (b) if social support buffered the association of minority stress with depression and anxiety symptoms, and (c) if the social support moderation effect differed by gender. The results indicated that the negative association of social support to depression symptoms was stronger for women than men and that social support buffered the association of ethnic minority status stress to depression symptoms only for women. The negative association of minority status stress to depression symptoms was statistically significant only for women who reported lower levels of social support. No gender or social support moderation effects were observed in relation to anxiety symptoms for women or men. The results highlight the importance of social support in ameliorating the potential impact of ethnic minority status stress on psychological distress among Hispanic college women. Full article

Introduction: Racial and ethnic disparities in end-of-life (EOL) cancer care persist, leading to lower rates of advance care planning (ACP), reduced access to palliative care, and poorer patient outcomes for minority populations. While previous research has documented these inequities, less is known about the specific interventions developed to address them, necessitating a comprehensive review of existing strategies aimed at improving EOL care for racial and ethnic populations. The objective of this scoping review is to examine the extent and characteristics of interventions and their outcomes designed to address racial and ethnic disparities in EOL cancer care in the United States. Methods: A comprehensive search of EOL cancer care interventions for minority populations was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL with Full Text (EBSCOhost), and Scopus (Elsevier) in September 2024. Two independent reviewers screened titles, abstracts, and full texts following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines, with inclusion limited to studies conducted in the US and published in English. Results: Of 3104 screened studies, 10 met the inclusion criteria. Participants enrolled were only from Latino (n = 6 studies) or Black (n = 4 studies) populations. We identified four types of interventions, including communication skills for patients, caregivers, researchers, and clinicians (n = 2), education programs for patients (n = 1), navigation and support programs for patients and caregivers (n = 3), and training programs for health workers and community leaders (n = 4). The most effective interventions were those that addressed linguistic barriers, integrated cultural values, and involved trusted community figures. Faith-based models were particularly successful among African American patients, while bilingual navigation and family-centered ACP interventions had the greatest impact in Latino populations. Conclusions: This review highlights (1) the importance of culturally tailored interventions for specific minority populations and (2) the limited number of such interventions, which primarily target only the largest minority groups. This literature review examines the pandemic’s impact on the mental health of college students, with a focus on those belonging to minority groups, including racial, ethnic, migrant, gender, sexuality-based, and low-income populations. While elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness were observed across all students, findings indicate that LGBTQ+ and low-income students faced the highest levels of psychological distress, due to compounded stressors such as family rejection, unsafe home environments, and financial insecurity. Racial and ethnic minority students reported increased experiences of discrimination and reduced access to culturally competent mental healthcare. International and migrant students were disproportionately affected by travel restrictions, legal uncertainties, and social disconnection. These disparities underscore the need for higher education institutions to implement targeted, inclusive mental health policies that account for the unique needs of at-risk student populations during health crises. Social Ecological Influences on HPV Vaccination Among Cape Verdean Immigrants in the U. S.: A Qualitative Study

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States (U.S.) and a major contributor to several cancers, including cervical, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. Although a safe and effective vaccine is available, HPV vaccination rates remain suboptimal, particularly among racial, ethnic, and immigrant minority groups. This study explored multiple factors, such as cultural, social, and structural influences, influencing HPV vaccine decision-making among Cape Verdean immigrant parents in the U.S., a population currently underrepresented in HPV research. Methods: Qualitative study using individual, in-depth interviews with Cape Verdean immigrant parents of children aged 11 to 17 years living in the U.S. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically using the social ecological model (SEM) to identify barriers and facilitators at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community, and policy levels. Results: Forty-five Cape Verdean parents (27 mothers, 18 fathers) participated. Fathers were significantly older than mothers (50.0 vs. 41.1 years, p = 0.05). Most were married or partnered (60%), had at least a high school education (84.4%), and reported annual household incomes of US$50,000 or more (66.7%), with no significant gender differences. Nearly all spoke Creole at home (95.6%). Fathers had lower acculturation than mothers (p = 0.05), reflecting less adaptation to U.S. norms and language use. Most parents had limited knowledge of HPV and the vaccine, with gendered beliefs and misconceptions about risk. Only seven mothers (25.9%) reported receiving a provider recommendation; all indicated that their children had initiated vaccination (1 dose or more). Mothers were the primary decision-makers, though joint decision-making was common. Trust in providers was high, but poor communication and the lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate materials limited informed decision-making. Stigma, misinformation, and cultural taboos restricted open dialogue. Trusted sources of information included schools, churches, and Cape Verdean organizations. While parents valued the U.S. healthcare system, they noted gaps in public health messaging and provider engagement. Conclusions: Findings revealed that HPV vaccine uptake and hesitancy among Cape Verdean immigrant parents in the U.S. were influenced by individual beliefs, family dynamics, healthcare provider interactions, cultural norms, and structural barriers. These findings highlight the need for multilevel strategies such as culturally tailored education, community engagement, and improved provider communication to support informed vaccination decisions in this population. Background: Previous research has examined the idea of the healthy immigrant effect and its potential application to pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders, particularly inracial and ethnic minority groups. The aim of this study is to examine how nativity, race, and ethnicity are related to prevalence of pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from the PRAMS CDC dataset. These data were analyzed via Χ2 comparisons of prevalence of pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders in foreign and US-born mothers, including subgroup analyses for Black and Hispanic women. Results: A sample size of 63,648 was analyzed, and revealed significant differences in the prevalence of gestational hypertension between US-born vs. foreign-born Black mothers (12.6% vs. 8.0%, Χ2 (1, N = 12,046) = 36.92, p < 0.001), Hispanic mothers (9.5% vs. 7.2%, Χ2 (1, N = 11,524) = 18.236, p < 0.001), and the larger sample of mothers across all reported racial and ethnic backgrounds (11.0% vs. 7.0%, Χ2 (1, N = 63,648) = 163.835, p < 0.001). The results also revealed a significant difference in the prevalence of hypertension eclampsia between US-born and foreign-born Hispanic mothers (0.8% vs. 0.3%, Χ2 (1, N = 11,152) = 8.480, p = 0.004). Conclusions: The study results showed evidence of significantly lower prevalence of pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders among foreign-born mothers as compared to their US-born counterparts, both in the full study sample and specifically in the subsamples of women who self-identified as Black and women who self-identified as Hispanic. These variances by nativity, race, and ethnicity provide further insight into how the healthy immigrant effect can apply to pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders, particularly for women of racial and ethnic minorities. This study aims to predict and discover important factors for the learning performance of students belonging to two ethnic groups—Khmer and Chinese (Hoa) students—in Soc Trang with the use of random forest (RF) and Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB) classifiers based on students’ demographics and grade point average (GPA) scores. The study involved 174 Khmer and Chinese (Hoa) students in Grade 10 in a high school in Soc Trang Province, Vietnam. The results showed that, for Khmer students, GNB was better than RF, with an F1 score of 100%. Mathematics was the most important subject leading Khmer students to very good or poor performance. For Chinese (Hoa) students, both classifiers showed the same accuracy performance. Scores in Literature and English in Semester 1 impacted Chinese (Hoa) students’ performance. The results of this study provide a reference for formulating a policy to improve the learning performance of minority students to prevent dropouts. Full article
