Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Natural hazards and disasters pose an ever-present threat to communities worldwide. These phenomena, ranging from earthquakes and hurricanes to floods and wildfires, have profound impacts on human life, infrastructure, and ecosystems. As disaster specialists, we recognize the urgency of enhancing our understanding and preparedness to mitigate these threats effectively.

This Special Issue will delve into the multifaceted nature of natural hazards and disasters by addressing the following critical questions that drive current research and practice:

  • Understanding hazard dynamics: What are the underlying mechanisms and environmental conditions that trigger natural hazards? How can we improve predictive models to anticipate the onset of these events more accurately?
  • Climate vulnerability and risk assessment: Which populations and regions are most vulnerable to specific types of natural hazards? What methodologies can be developed to better assess and quantify risk?
  • Impact analysis: What are the short-term and long-term impacts of natural disasters on communities, economies, and ecosystems? How can we effectively measure and compare these impacts across different regions and hazard types?
  • Mitigation strategies: What innovative approaches and technologies are being developed to mitigate the effects of natural hazards? How can existing infrastructure be adapted to withstand these events?
  • Preparedness and response: What are the best practices for disaster preparedness and emergency response? How can communities build climate resilience and improve their response capabilities?
  • Policy and governance: What role do policies and governance play in disaster risk reduction? How can international cooperation and policy frameworks be strengthened to support effective disaster management?

In addressing these questions, we aim to foster a comprehensive dialog between researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders globally. The immediacy of this research cannot be overstated, as climate change and urbanization continue to exacerbate the frequency and intensity of natural disasters.

We invite contributions that explore these themes through research articles, review articles, and short communications. Your insights will contribute to a deeper understanding of natural hazards and the development of robust strategies to protect our communities and environment.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Safety is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
