Integrated optical waveguide amplifiers, with their compact footprint, low power consumption, and scalability, are the basis for optical communications. The realization of high gain in such integrated devices is made more challenging by the tight optical constraints. In this work, we present efficient amplification in an erbium–ytterbium-based hybrid slot waveguide consisting of a silicon nitride waveguide and a thin-film active layer/electron-beam resist. The electron-beam resist as the upper cladding layer not only possesses the role of protecting the waveguide but also has tighter optical confinement in the vertical cross-section direction. On this basis, an accurate and comprehensive dynamic model of an erbium–ytterbium co-doped amplifier is realized by introducing quenched ions. A modal gain of above 20 dB is achieved at the signal wavelength of 1530 nm in a 1.4 cm long hybrid slot waveguide, with fractions of quenched ions fq = 30%. In addition, the proposed hybrid waveguide amplifiers exhibit higher modal gain than conventional air-clad amplifiers under the same conditions. Endowing silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits with efficient amplification enriches the integration of various active functionalities on silicon. Full article

In this work, we report the formation of multiple mode-locking states in an Erbium/Ytterbium co-doped fiber laser, such as domain-wall (DW) dark pulses, high-order dark harmonic pulses, dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) pulses, and dual-wavelength h-shaped pulses. By increasing the pump power and adjusting the quarter-wave retarder (QWR) plates, we experimentally achieve 310th-order harmonic dark pulses. DSR pulses emerge at a pump power of 1.01 W and remain stable up to 9.07 W, reaching a maximum pulse width of 676 ns and a pulse energy of 1.608 µJ, while Dual-wavelength h-shaped pulses have a threshold of 1.42 W and maintain stability up to 9.07 W. Using a monochromator, we confirm that these h-shaped pulses result from the superposition of a soliton-like pulse and a DSR-like pulse, emitting at different wavelengths but locked in time. The fundamental repetition rate for dark pulsing, DSR, and h-shaped pulses is 321.34 kHz. This study provides new insights into complex pulse dynamics in fiber lasers and demonstrates the versatile emission regimes achievable through precise pump and polarization control. Full article

Active waveguide Bragg gratings (AWBGs) are promising photonic structures that combine the very efficient reflective properties of a Bragg grating with the power amplification character of rare earths. This combination may lead to a potential monolithic laser under the proper conditions. However, the photonic response of these structures highly depends on the grating design and operating parameters, so modeling its response for their laser performance is a must. In this work, a numerical method is employed to calculate the optical power propagation along an Er/Yb-codoped integrated AWBG. A complete database of the AWBG response as a function of the most relevant operational parameters is obtained. As a result, the critical values of each design and operating parameter to achieve its laser performance have been determined, which represents very useful information for further experimental design, optimization, and fabrication of these photonic structures. In this paper, we demonstrated a distributed feedback fiber-laser- (DFB-FL) based ultrasound detection system with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), high sensitivity and wide frequency response range. The DFB-FL was fabricated by UV-inscribing a π phase-shifted grating in the Erbium–Ytterbium co-doped fiber using the phase mask method. The theory of DFB-FL and the sensing principle has been discussed and analyzed. The sensing signal was demodulated via an unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) system. The experimental results showed that the sensitivity of the sensor reached 75.18 mV/kPa and the flat frequency response range covered over 30 MHz, which covered the ultrasonic detection frequency range of abnormal discharge in the electric power system. The SNR of this DFB-FL was 42.9 dB, and the corresponding noise-equivalent pressure was calculated as 0.12 kPa. Full article

We present a combination of light-sheet excitation and two-dimensional fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) measurements as a simple and promising technique for three-dimensional temperature mapping. The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated with samples fabricated with sodium yttrium fluoride nanoparticles co-doped with rare-earth ytterbium and erbium ions (NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+) incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a host material. In addition, we also evaluate the technique using lipid-coated NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles immersed in agar. The composite materials show upconverted (UC) fluorescence bands when excited by a 980 nm near-infrared laser light-sheet. Using a single CMOS camera and a pair of interferometric optical filters to specifically image the two thermally-coupled bands (at 525 and 550 nm), the two-dimensional FIR and, hence, the temperature map can be readily obtained. The proposed method can take optically sectioned (confocal-like) images with good optical resolution over relatively large samples (up to the millimetric scale) for further 3D temperature reconstruction. A highly erbium- and ytterbium-co-doped photosensitive fiber with a germanophosphosilicate glass core was fabricated by the MCVD method, utilizing an all-gas-phase deposition technique developed “in-house”. Due to doping with germanium oxide (GeO2), this fiber revealed high-grade photosensitivity (without hydrogen loading) to UV laser radiation at a 193 nm wavelength. The short (28 mm) Fabry–Perot laser cavity was designed by inscribing two fiber Bragg gratings (highly and partially reflective FBGs) directly in the core of the fabricated fiber sample. The stable single-frequency operation regime of the designed laser was observed. The laser emission peak was centered at 1540 nm, with a linewidth of 50 kHz. The slope efficiency of the laser was 10%, and the maximal output power reached a level of 35 mW. Full article

The design and fabrication of a integrated symmetric directional coupler dependent o the pumping power and operating at a 1534 nm wavelength is reported. The twin-core waveguide was inscribed into Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glass by a femtosecond laser direct writing technique. By optical pumping, the coupling ratio can be modulated due to the changes induced in the refractive index of the material. The experimental results demonstrated that the coupling ratio can be tuned continuously from 100/0 to 50/50 by increasing the pump’s power from 0 to 350 mW. The developed twin-core coupler has promising applications for on-chip all-optical signal processing and communication systems. Full article

This paper reports the implementation of two critical technologies used in light detection and ranging for space applications: (1) a microchip Q-switched laser breadboard; (2) a breadboard of an indium gallium arsenide avalanche photodiode working at 292 K with high reverse polarization voltages. Microchip Q-switched lasers are small solid-state back-pumped lasers that can generate high-energy short pulses. The implemented breadboard used an erbium and ytterbium co-doped phosphate glass, a Co:Spinel crystal with 98% initial transparency, and an output coupler with 98% reflectivity. For the sensor test, a system for simultaneous operation in vacuum and a wide range of temperatures was developed. Avalanche photodiodes are reverse-polarized photodiodes with high internal gain due to their multiple layer composition, capable of building up high values of photocurrent from small optical signals by exploiting the avalanche breakdown effects. The test avalanche photodetector was assembled to be operated in two modes: linear and Geiger mode. The produced photocurrent was measured by using: (1) a passive quenching circuit; (2) a transimpedance amplifier circuit. These two technologies are important for mobile light detection and ranging applications due to their low mass and high efficiencies. The paper describes the breadboard’s implementation methods and sensor characterization at low and room temperatures with high bias voltages (beyond breakdown voltage). Full article

In this study, undoped and (Erbium, Ytterbium) co-doped ZnO nanopowders were prepared using the sol-gel method and the supercritical drying of ethyl alcohol. Doping ZnO nanopowders were elaborated with 5 mol% of Er (5 Er: ZnO), 5 mol% of Er and 5 mol% of Yb (5 Er, 5 Yb: ZnO), and 5 mol% of Er and 10 mol% of Yb (5 Er, 10 Yb: ZnO) concentrations. The effects of the Yb concentration on the structural, morphological, photoluminescent, and electrical properties of the ZnO nanopowders were investigated. The main findings of this work were the crystallinization of all of the nanopowders in a hexagonal Wurtzite structure with a spheroidal morphology and a size of 60 nm. Hence, the doping concentration would affect the crystallinity and the morphology of the ZnO nanopowder. The UC (Up-Conversion) emissions were investigated under a 980 nm excitation. It was observed that (Er, Yb: ZnO) exhibited green, ranging between 525 nm and 550 nm and red up-converted emissions of 655 nm, due to the efficient energy transfer process between Er3+ and Yb3+. The absolute quantum yield percentage (QY %) of the doped nanopowders was measured as a function of power density at each up-converted emission. This would prove that (5 Er, 5 Yb: ZnO) had the highest QY percentage value of 6.31 ± 0.2% at a power density of 15.7 W/cm2. Additionally, it had the highest excited state lifetime for green and red emissions. Moreover, the Hall effect measures showed that the resistivity decreased while the electron mobility increased after doping, suggesting that most of rare earth ions were located in the interstitial positions. The carrier concentration increased after doping until (5 Er, 5 Yb: ZnO), suggesting that the Zn2+ ions substituted the RE3+ ions. Then, the carrier concentration decreased, suggesting that doping with higher concentrations would cause grain boundary defects. These findings would suggest that (5 Er, 5 Yb: ZnO) would have the best electrical properties and the lowest band gap energy (3.24 eV). Therefore, the presented preparation of the (Er, Yb: ZnO) nanopowders elaborated, using the sol-gel process would be a potential interesting material for UC applications. Full article

Cladding-pumped erbium (Er3+)/ytterbium (Yb3+)-co-doped fiber amplifiers are more advantageous at high output powers. However, this amplification technique also has potential in telecom-related applications. These types of amplifiers have complex properties, especially when considering gain profile and a pump conversion efficiency. Such metrics depend on the doped fiber profile, absorption/emission spectra, and the input signal power. In this context, we design, build and characterize an inhouse prototype of cladding-pumped Er3+/Yb3+-co-doped fiber amplifier (EYDFA). Our goal is to identify the EYDFA configuration (a co-doped fiber length, pump power, input signal power) suitable for signal amplification in a multichannel fiber-optic transmission system with a dense wavelength allocation across the C-band (1530–1565 nm). Our approach involves experimentally determining the Er3+/Yb3+-co-doped fiber’s parameters to be used in a simulation setup to decide on an initial EYDFA configuration before moving to a laboratory setup. An experimental EYDFA prototype is tested under different conditions using a 48-channel dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM, 100 GHz) system to evaluate the absolute gain and gain uniformity. The obtained results allow the cladding pump amplifier’s suitability for wideband signal amplification to be assessed. The developed prototype provides >21 dB of gain with a 12 dB ripple within 1534–1565 nm. Furthermore, we show that the gain profile can be partially flattened out by using longer EYDF spans. This enhances signal amplification in the upper C-band in exchange for a weaker amplification in the lower C-band, which can be marginally improved with higher pump powers. Full article

Erbium upconversion (UC) photoluminescence (PL) from sol-gel derived barium titanate (BaTiO3:Er) xerogel structures fabricated on silicon, glass or fused silica substrates has been studied. Under continuous-wave excitation at 980 nm and nanosecond pulsed excitation at 980 and 1540 nm, the fabricated structures demonstrate room temperature PL with several bands at 410, 523, 546, 658, 800 and 830 nm, corresponding to the 2H9/24I15/2, 2H11/24I15/2, 4S3/24I15/2, 4F9/24I15/2 and 4I9/24I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions. The intensity of erbium UC PL increases when an additional macroporous layer of strontium titanate is used beneath the BaTiO3 xerogel layer. It is also enhanced in BaTiO3 xerogel films codoped with erbium and ytterbium (BaTiO3:(Er,Yb)). For the latter, a redistribution of the intensity of the PL bands is observed depending on the excitation conditions. A multilayer BaTiO3:(Er,Yb)/SiO2 microcavity structure was formed on a fused silica substrate with a cavity mode in the range of 650–680 nm corresponding to one of the UC PL bands of Er3+ ions. The obtained cavity structure annealed at 450 °C provides tuning of the cavity mode by 10 nm in the temperature range from 20 °C to 130 °C. Photonic application of BaTiO3 xerogel structures doped with lanthanides is discussed. Full article

In this work, we studied the phase composition, local structure and mechanical characteristics of ZrO2 crystals partially stabilized with Y2O3 and co-doped with Nd2O3, CeO2, Er2O3, Tb2O3 and Yb2O3. Crystals were grown by directional melt crystallization in a cold container. The phase composition and structure of crystals were studied by X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. The study of the features of the incorporation of rare-earth cations with different ionic radii into the transformable (t) and nontransformable (t’) tetragonal phases was carried out by the method of selective laser spectroscopy and time-resolved spectroscopy. Mechanical characteristics such as microhardness and fracture toughness were studied by the indentation method. It is shown that the phase composition and structure of crystals at the same total concentration of doping oxides depends on the degree of substitution of Y3+ cations by rare-earth cations. Rare earth ions of the beginning of the lanthanide series predominantly occupy positions in the nontransformable tetragonal phase of crystals based on zirconium dioxide. Ions of the end of a series of lanthanides do not show selectivity when entering the transformable (t) phase and nontransformable (t’) phase. The study of the mechanical characteristics of the crystals showed that the values of fracture toughness increase with an increase in the ionic radius of the rare earth element of the co-doped oxide, while the values of the microhardness of the crystals slightly decrease. A hybrid double cladding erbium–ytterbium co-doped fiber (EYDF) amplifier with a single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) active fiber is demonstrated in this study. The hybrid gain fiber with an SMS structure is composed of two kinds of EYDFs with 6 and 12 μm core diameters. The transmission spectra of the SMS fiber structure were theoretically analyzed and the simulation results indicated that the maximum loss in the 1~1.1 μm band where the Yb-band amplified spontaneous emission (Yb-ASE) located, was much larger than that of the 1.5-μm band because of the wavelength difference. The power performance and spectra properties of the hybrid fiber amplifier were theoretically and experimentally analyzed and compared with a typical uniform fiber amplifier under the same conditions. The experimental results demonstrated that this hybrid fiber amplifier can suppress the Yb-ASE by over 12 dB and increase the slope efficiency by more than 2%, but the ASE in the 1.5-μm band increases by 2~3 dB. This work provides a possible method to enable EYDF amplifiers to suppress the Yb-ASE and overcome the pump bottleneck effect. Full article

As diagnostic biosensors for analyzing fluids from the human body, the development of inorganic NPs is of increasing concern. For one, nanoceramic phosphors have been studied to meet the increasing requirements for biological, imaging, and diagnostic applications. In this study, Y2O3 NPs co-doped with trivalent rare earths (erbium and ytterbium) were obtained using a liquid phase–pulsed laser ablation (LP–PLA) method after getting high density Er, Yb:Y2O3 ceramic targets by Spark plasma sintering (SPS). Most NPs are under 50 nm in diameter and show high crystallinity of cubic Y2O3 structure, containing (222), (440), and (332) planes via HR–TEM. Excitation under a 980 nm laser to a nanoparticle solution showed 525 and 565 nm green, and 660 nm red emissions. The green emission intensity increased and decreased with increasing Yb3+ additive concentration, when the red spectrum continuously strengthened. Utilizing this study’s outcome, we suggest developing technology to mark invisible biomolecules dissolved in a solvent using UC luminescence of Er3+, Yb3+ co-doped Y2O3 NPs by LP–PLA. The LP–PLA method has a potential ability for the fabrication of UC NPs for biosensors with uniform size distribution by laser parameters. Full article

Space-division multiplexing (SDM) attracts attention to cladding-pumped optical amplifiers, but they suffer from a low pump power conversion efficiency. To address this issue, ytterbium (Yb3+) and erbium (Er3+) co-doping is considered as an effective approach. However, it changes the gain profile of Er3+-doped fiber amplifiers and induces the gain difference between optical wavelengths in the C-band, significantly limiting the effective band of the dense wavelength-division multiplexed (DWDM) system. This paper is devoted to a detailed study of a cladding-pumped Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fiber amplifier (EYDFA) through numerical simulations aiming to identify a configuration, before assembling a similar EYDFA in our laboratory premises that ensures the desired performance. The simulation model is based on a commercial double cladding EYDF whose parameters are experimentally extracted and fed to the EYDFA setup for the system-level studies. We investigate the wavelength dependence of the amplifier’s characteristics (absolute gain, gain uniformity, noise figure) and bit error rate (BER) performance for several DWDM channels and their optical power. The obtained results show that a 7 m long EYDF and co-propagating pump direction is preferable for the EYDFA with a 3 W pump source at 975 nm and with the given gain medium characteristics for WDM applications. For instance, it ensures a gain of 19.7–28.3 dB and a noise figure of 3.7–4.2 dB when amplifying 40 DWDM channels with the input power of −20 dBm per channel. Besides, we study EYDFA gain bandwidth and the maximum output power when operating close to the saturation regime and perform a sensitivity analysis showing how the doped fiber’s absorption and emission cross-sections impact the amplification process through energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+. Finally, we quantify the power penalty introduced by the EYDFA; the results show that it is not higher than 0.1 dB when amplifying 40 × 10 Gbps non-return-to-zero on-off keying signals from −20 dBm/channel.
