Determining charge and discharge behavior is essential for optimizing charging strategies and evaluating balancing algorithms in battery energy storage systems and electric vehicles. Conventionally, a sequence of circuit simulations or tedious hardware tests is required to evaluate the performance of the balancing algorithm. To mitigate these problems, this paper proposes a variable capacitor model that can be easily built from the incremental capacity curve. This model provides a direct and insightful R-C time constant method for the charge/discharge time calculation. After validating the model accuracy by experimental results based on the cylindrical lithium-ion cell test, a switched-capacitor active balancing and a passive cell balancing circuit are implemented to further verify the effectiveness of the proposed model in calculating the cell balancing time within 2% error. The Union of the Comoros, located in the Indian Ocean, faces persistent energy challenges due to its geographic isolation, heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels, and underdeveloped electricity infrastructure. This study investigates the techno-economic optimization of a hybrid microgrid designed to supply electricity to a rural village in Grande Comore. The proposed system integrates photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines, a diesel generator, and battery storage. Detailed modeling and simulation were conducted using HOMER Energy, accompanied by a sensitivity analysis on solar irradiance, wind speed, and diesel price. The results indicate that the optimal configuration consists solely of PV and battery storage, meeting 100% of the annual electricity demand with a competitive levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of 0.563 USD/kWh and zero greenhouse gas emissions. Solar PV contributes over 99% of the total energy production, while wind and diesel components remain unused under optimal conditions. Furthermore, the system generates a substantial energy surplus of 63.7%, which could be leveraged for community applications such as water pumping, public lighting, or future system expansion. This study highlights the technical viability, economic competitiveness, and environmental sustainability of 100% solar microgrids for non-interconnected island territories. The approach provides a practical and replicable decision-support framework for decentralized energy planning in remote and vulnerable regions. Full article

This paper presents an advanced energy management system (EMS) for optimizing power distribution in a battery/ultracapacitor (UC) hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for electric vehicles (EVs). The proposed EMS accounts for all energy flow scenarios within a practical driving cycle. A regenerative braking control strategy is developed to maximize kinetic energy recovery using an induction motor, efficiently distributing the recovered energy between the UC and battery. Additionally, a power flow management approach is introduced for both motoring (discharge) and braking (charge) operations via bidirectional buck–boost DC-DC converters. In discharge mode, an optimal distribution factor is dynamically adjusted to balance power delivery between the battery and UC, maximizing efficiency. During charging, a DC link voltage control mechanism prioritizes UC charging over the battery, reducing stress and enhancing energy recovery efficiency. The proposed EMS is validated through simulations and experiments, demonstrating significant improvements in vehicle acceleration, energy efficiency, and battery lifespan. Full article

Flexible energy sources such as electric vehicles and the battery energy storage systems of intelligent distribution systems can provide system-wide auxiliary services such as frequency regulation for power systems. This paper proposes an optimal method for operating the local energy community that is based on two-stage scheduling. Firstly, the basic concepts of the local energy community and flexible service are introduced in detail. Taking LEC as the reserve unit of artificial frequency recovery, an energy information interaction model among LEC, balance service providers, and the power grid is established. Then, a two-stage scheduling framework is proposed to ensure the rationality and economy of community energy scheduling. In the first stage, day-ahead scheduling uses the energy community management center to predict the up/down flexibility capacity that LEC can provide by adjusting the BESS control parameters. In the second stage, real-time scheduling aims at maximizing community profits and scheduling LEC based on the allocation and activation of standby flexibility determined in real time. Finally, the correctness of the two-stage scheduling framework is verified through a case study. The results show that the control parameters used in the day-ahead stage can significantly affect the real-time profitability of LEC, and that LEC benefits more in the case of low BESS utilization than in the case of high BESS utilization and non-participation in frequency recovery reserve. This paper analyzes the availability of lithium resources required to support a global decarbonized energy system featuring electrical energy storage based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. A net-zero carbon grid consisting of existing nuclear and hydro capacity, with the balance being a 50/50 mix of wind and solar power generation, is assumed to satisfy projected world electrical demand in 2050, incorporating the electrification of transportation. The battery electrical storage capacity needed to support this grid is estimated and translated into the required number of nominal 10 MWh LFP storage plants similar to the ones currently in operation. The total lithium required for the global storage system is determined from the number of nominal plants and the inventory of lithium in each plant. The energy required to refine this amount of lithium is accounted for in the estimation of the total lithium requirement. Comparison of the estimated lithium requirements with known global lithium resources indicates that a global storage system consisting only of LFP plants would require only around 12.3% of currently known lithium reserves in a high-economic-growth scenario. The overall cost for a global LFP-based grid-scale energy storage system is estimated to be approximately USD 17 trillion. Full article

Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are widely used in power-conversion applications, including distributed energy storage integration, because of their scalability, high efficiency, and reduced harmonic distortion. Integrating battery storage systems into MMC submodules using dual active bridge (DAB) converters provides electrical isolation and reduces voltage stress, harmonics, and common-mode issues. However, voltage fluctuations due to the battery state of charge can compromise the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation of a DAB and increase the reactive power circulation, leading to higher losses and reduced system performance. To address these challenges, this study investigated an active control strategy for submodule voltage regulation in an MMC with DAB-based battery integration. Assuming single-phase-shift modulation, two control strategies were evaluated. The first strategy regulated the DAB voltage on one side to match the battery voltage on the other, scaled by the high-frequency transformer turns ratio, which facilitated the ZVS operation and reduced the reactive power. The second strategy optimized this voltage to minimize the total power-conversion losses. The proposed control strategies improved the efficiency, particularly at low power levels, achieving several percentage points of improvement compared to maintaining a constant voltage. Full article

Zinc (Zn)-based batteries have attracted significant interest for applications ranging from electric bikes to grid storage because of its advantageous properties like high abundance, non-toxicity and low-cost. Zn offers a high theoretical capacity of two electrons per atom, resulting in 820 mAh/g, making it a promising anode material for the development of highly energy dense batteries. However, the advancement of Zn-based battery systems is hindered by the limited availability of cathode materials that simultaneously offer high theoretical capacity, long-term cycling stability, and affordability. In this work, we present a new mixed material cathode system, comprising of a mixture of manganese dioxide (MnO2) and copper oxide (Cu2O) as active materials, that delivers a high theoretical capacity of ~280 mAh/g (MnO2 + Cu2O active material) (based on the combined mass of MnO2 and Cu2O) and supports stable cycling for >200 cycles at 1C. We further demonstrate the scalability of this novel cathode system by increasing the electrode size and capacity, highlighting its potential for practical and commercial applications. Full article

This paper presents an annual, real-world evaluation of the performance and economics of a residential photovoltaic (PV) system coupled with a battery energy storage system (BESS) in southern Poland. The system, monitored with 5 min resolution, operated under time-of-use (TOU) electricity tariffs. Seasonal variation was significant; self-sufficiency exceeded 90% in summer, while winter conditions increased grid dependency. The hybrid system reduced electricity costs by over EUR 1400 annually, with battery operation optimized for high-tariff periods. Comparative analysis of three configurations—grid-only, PV-only, and PV + BESS—demonstrated the economic advantage of the integrated solution, with the shortest payback period (9.0 years) achieved with financial support. However, grid voltage instability during high PV production led to inverter shutdowns, highlighting limitations in the infrastructure. This study emphasizes the importance of tariff strategies, environmental conditions, and voltage control when designing residential PV-BESS systems. Full article

The growing global demand for electricity, driven by the development of electromobility, data centers, and smart technologies, necessitates innovative approaches to energy generation. Wind power, as a clean and renewable energy source, plays a pivotal role in the global transition towards low-carbon power systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of generator technologies used in wind turbine applications, ranging from conventional synchronous and asynchronous machines to advanced concepts such as low-speed direct-drive (DD) generators, axial-flux topologies, and superconducting generators utilizing low-temperature superconductors (LTS) and high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The advantages and limitations of each design are discussed in the context of efficiency, weight, reliability, scalability, and suitability for offshore deployment. Special attention is given to HTS-based generator systems, which offer superior power density and reduced losses, along with challenges related to cryogenic cooling and materials engineering. Furthermore, the paper analyzes selected modern generator designs to provide references for enhancing the performance of grid-synchronized hybrid microgrids integrating solar PV, wind, battery energy storage, and HTS-enhanced generators. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and engineers developing next-generation wind energy technologies with improved efficiency and integration potential. Full article

Techno-Economic Assessment of Electrification and Hydrogen Pathways for Optimal Solar Integration in the Glass Industry

Direct electrification and hydrogen utilization represent two key pathways for decarbonizing the glass industry, with their effectiveness subject to adequate furnace design and renewable energy availability. This study presents a techno-economic assessment for optimal solar energy integration in a representative 300 t/d oxyfuel container glass furnace with a specific energy consumption of 4.35 GJ/t. A mixed-integer linear programming formulation is developed to evaluate specific melting costs, carbon emissions, and renewable energy self-consumption and self-production rates across three scenarios: direct solar coupling, battery storage, and a hydrogen-based infrastructure. Battery storage achieves the greatest reductions in specific melting costs and emissions, whereas hydrogen integration minimizes electricity export to the grid. By incorporating capital investment considerations, the study quantifies the cost premiums and capacity requirements under varying decarbonization targets. A combination of 30 MW of solar plant and 9 MW of electric boosting enables the realization of around 30% carbon reduction while increasing total costs by 25%. Deeper decarbonization targets require more advanced systems, with batteries emerging as a cost-effective solution. These findings offer critical insights into the economic and environmental trade-offs, as well as the technical constraints associated with renewable energy adoption in the glass industry, providing a foundation for strategic energy and decarbonization planning. MXenes, a class of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, emerged as a promising material for next-generation energy storage and corresponding applications due to their unique combination of high electrical conductivity, tunable surface chemistry, and lamellar structure. This review highlights recent advances in MXene-based composites, focusing on their integration into electrode architectures for the development of supercapacitors, batteries, and multifunctional devices, including triboelectric nanogenerators. It serves as a comprehensive overview of the multifunctional capabilities of MXene-based composites and their role in advancing efficient, flexible, and sustainable energy and sensing technologies, outlining how MXene-based systems are poised to redefine multifunctional energy platforms. Electrochemical performance optimization strategies are discussed by considering surface functionalization, interlayer engineering, scalable synthesis techniques, and integration with advanced electrolytes, with particular attention paid to the development of hybrid supercapacitors, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), and wearable sensors. These applications are favored due to improved charge storage capability, mechanical properties, and the multifunctionality of MXenes. Despite these aspects, challenges related to long-term stability, sustainable large-scale production, and environmental degradation must still be addressed. Emerging approaches such as three-dimensional self-assembly and artificial intelligence-assisted design are identified as key challenges for overcoming these issues. Full article

This article presents a comparative study of the storage of energy produced by photovoltaic panels by means of two types of batteries: Lead–Acid and Lithium-Ion batteries. The work involved the construction of a model in MATLAB-Simulink for controlling the loading/unloading of storage batteries with energy produced by photovoltaic panels through a buck-type DC-DC convertor, controlled by means of the MPPT algorithm implemented through the method of incremental conductance based on a MATLAB function. The program for the MATLAB function was developed by the author in the C++ programming environment. The MPPT algorithm provides maximum energy transfer from the photovoltaic panels to the battery. The electric power taken over at a certain moment by Lithium-Ion batteries in photovoltaic panels is higher than the electric power taken over by Lead–Acid batteries. Two types of batteries were successively used in this model: Lead–Acid and Lithium-Ion batteries. Based on the results being obtained and presented in this work it may be affirmed that the storage battery Lithium-Ion is more performant than the Lead-Acid storage battery. At the Laboratory of Electrical Machinery and Drives of the Engineering Faculty of Bacau, an experimental stand was built for a storing system for electric energy produced by photovoltaic panels. For controlling DC-DC buck-type convertors, a program was developed in the programming environment Arduino IDE for implementing the MPPT algorithm for incremental conductance. The simulation part of this program is similar to that of the program developed in C++. Through conducting experiments, it was observed that, during battery charging, along with an increase in the charging voltage, an increase in the filling factor of the PWM signal controlling the buck DC-DC convertor also occurred. The findings of this study may be applicable to the storage of battery-generated electrical energy used for supplying electrical motors in electric cars. Full article

In the context of urban decarbonization, multi-energy microgrids (MEMGs) are gaining increasing relevance due to their ability to enhance synergies across multiple energy vectors. This study presents a block-based MILP framework developed to optimize the operations of a real MEMG, with a particular focus on accurately modeling the structure of electricity and natural gas bills. The objective is to assess the added economic value of integrating a battery energy storage system (BESS) under the assumption it is employed to provide implicit flexibility—namely, bill management, energy arbitrage, and peak shaving. Results show that under assumed market conditions, tariff schemes, and BESS costs, none of the analyzed BESS configurations achieve a positive net present value. However, a 2 MW/4 MWh BESS yields a 3.8% reduction in annual operating costs compared to the base case without storage, driven by increased self-consumption (+2.8%), reduced thermal energy waste (–6.4%), and a substantial decrease in power-based electricity charges (–77.9%). The performed sensitivity analyses indicate that even with a significantly higher day-ahead market price spread, the BESS is not sufficiently incentivized to perform pure energy arbitrage and that the effectiveness of a time-of-use power-based tariff depends not only on the level of price differentiation but also on the BESS size. Overall, this study provides insights into the role of BESS in MEMGs and highlights the need for electricity bill designs that better reward the provision of implicit flexibility by storage systems. The energy generated from renewable sources has an intermittent nature since solar irradiation and wind speed vary continuously. Hence, their energy should be stored to be utilized throughout their shortage. There are various forms of energy storage systems while the most widespread technique is the battery storage system since its cost is low compared to other techniques. Therefore, batteries are employed in several applications like power systems, electric vehicles, and smart grids. Due to the merits of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery, it is preferred over other kinds of batteries. However, the accuracy of the Li-ion battery model is essential for estimating the state of charge (SOC). Additionally, it is essential for consistent simulation and operation throughout various loading and charging conditions. Consequently, the determination of real battery model parameters is vital. An innovative application of the red-billed blue magpie optimizer (RBMO) for determining the model parameters and the SOC of the Li-ion battery is presented in this article. The Shepherd model parameters are determined using the suggested optimization algorithm. The RBMO-based modeling approach offers excellent execution in determining the parameters of the battery model. The suggested approach is compared to other programmed algorithms, namely dandelion optimizer, spider wasp optimizer, barnacles mating optimizer, and interior search algorithm. Moreover, the suggested RBMO is statistically evaluated using Kruskal–Wallis, ANOVA tables, Friedman rank, and Wilcoxon rank tests. Additionally, the Li-ion battery model estimated via the RBMO is validated under variable loading conditions. The fetched results revealed that the suggested approach achieved the least errors between the measured and estimated voltages compared to other approaches in two studied cases with values of 1.4951 × 10−4 and 2.66176 × 10−4. Deep Neural Network with Anomaly Detection for Single-Cycle Battery Lifetime Prediction

Large-scale battery datasets often contain anomalous data due to sensor noise, communication errors, and operational inconsistencies, which degrade the accuracy of data-driven prognostics. However, many existing studies overlook the impact of such anomalies or apply filtering heuristically without rigorous benchmarking, which can potentially introduce biases into training and evaluation pipelines. This study presents a deep learning framework that integrates autoencoder-based anomaly detection with a residual neural network (ResNet) to achieve state-of-the-art prediction of remaining useful life at the cycle level using only a single-cycle input. The framework systematically filters out anomalous samples using multiple variants of convolutional and sequence-to-sequence autoencoders, thereby enhancing data integrity before optimizing and training the ResNet-based models. Benchmarking against existing deep learning approaches demonstrates a significant performance improvement, with the best model achieving a mean absolute percentage error of 2.85% and a root mean square error of 40.87 cycles, surpassing prior studies. These results indicate that autoencoder-based anomaly filtering significantly enhances prediction accuracy, reinforcing the importance of systematic anomaly detection in battery prognostics.
