Large, high-quality patient datasets are essential for applications like economic modeling and patient simulation. However, real-world data is often inaccessible or incomplete. Synthetic patient data offers an alternative, and current methods often fail to preserve clinical plausibility, real-world correlations, and logical consistency. This study presents a patient cohort generator designed to produce realistic, statistically valid synthetic datasets. The generator uses predefined probability distributions and Cholesky decomposition to reflect real-world correlations. A dependency matrix handles variable relationships in the right order. Hard limits block unrealistic values, and binary variables are set using percentiles to match expected rates. Validation used two datasets, NHANES (2021–2023) and the Framingham Heart Study, evaluating cohort diversity (general, cardiac, low-dimensional), data sparsity (five correlation scenarios), and model performance (MSE, RMSE, R2, SSE, correlation plots). Results demonstrated strong alignment with real-world data in central tendency, dispersion, and correlation structures. Scenario A (empirical correlations) performed best (R2 = 86.8–99.6%, lowest SSE and MAE). Scenario B (physician-estimated correlations) also performed well, especially in a low-dimensions population (R2 = 80.7%). Scenario E (no correlation) performed worst. Overall, the proposed model provides a scalable, customizable solution for generating synthetic patient cohorts, supporting reliable simulations and research when real-world data is limited. While deep learning approaches have been proposed for this task, they require access to large-scale real datasets and offer limited control over statistical dependencies or clinical logic. The logistics industry faces challenges from evolving consumer expectations, technological advances, sustainability demands, and market disruptions. Logistics collaboration is in theory perceived as one of the most promising solutions to solve these issues, but here are still a lot of challenges that needs to be better understood and addressed. While vertical collaboration among supply chain actors is well advanced, horizontal collaboration among competing service providers remains under-explored. This study developed a novel methodology based on the COM-B behaviour-change framework to better understand the main challenges, opportunities, capabilities and drivers that would motivate competing companies to exploit the potential of horizontal logistics collaboration. A survey was designed and conducted among 71 logistics service providers in Slovenia, chosen for its fragmented market and low willingness to collaborate. Statistical analysis reveals cost reduction (M = 4.21/5) and improved vehicle utilization (M = 4.29/5) as the primary motivators. On the other hand, maintaining company reputation (M = 4.64/5), fair resource sharing (M = 4.20/5), and transparency of logistics processes (M = 4.17/5) all persist as key enabling conditions. These findings underscore the pivotal role of behavioural drivers and suggest strategies that combine economic incentives with targeted trust-building measures. Future research should employ experimental designs in diverse national contexts and integrate vertical–horizontal approaches to validate causal pathways and advance theory. Full article

Economic growth, especially in emerging economies, has altered the composition of international tourism. It is therefore essential to possess the skills necessary to understand the influence of culture on human behaviour, thereby enabling an appropriate response to the traveller. This research aims to develop a tool for identifying openness, flexibility, awareness, and intercultural preparedness. It focuses on the metacognitive and cognitive aspects of cultural intelligence that shape the development of empathy in customer service staff in hotels in Quintana Roo. The variables were validated and incorporated into a quantitative study using multivariate analysis and inferential statistics. A sample of 77 questionnaires was analysed using simple random sampling under a proportional design. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was employed as a discriminatory technique to identify the most significant independent variables. These were subsequently entered as regressors into ordinal logistic regression (OLR), along with age and work experience, in order to estimate the probabilities associated with each level of the dependent variable. The results indicated that age had minimal influence on the metacognitive and cognitive variables, whereas years of experience among tourism staff exerted a significant effect. Full article

The right to development, an inherent human right for all, emphasizes that all individuals and communities have the right to participate in, contribute to, and benefit from development that ensures the full realization of human rights. In Kenya, where a significant portion of the population faces poverty and vulnerability to climate change, access to rights-based needs such as clean water, healthcare, and education still remains a critical challenge. This study explored the implementation of a Human Rights-Based approach to community development through a Public–Private Development Partnership model (PPDP), with a focus on alleviating poverty and improving access to rights-based services at the community level in Narok and Nakuru counties. The research aimed to identify critical success factors for scaling the PPDP model and explore its effects on socio-economic empowerment. The study employed a mixed-methods approach for data collection, using questionnaires to obtain quantitative data, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews with community members, local leaders, and stakeholders to gather qualitative data. We cleaned and analyzed all our data in R (version 4.4.3) and used the chi-square to establish the significance of differences between areas where the PPDP model was implemented and control areas where it was not. Results reveal that communities with the PPDP model experienced statistically significant improvements in employment, income levels, and access to rights-based services compared to control areas. The outcomes underscore the potential of the PPDP model to address inclusive and sustainable development. This study therefore proposes a scalable pathway beginning with access to rights-based needs, followed by improved service delivery, and culminating in economic empowerment. These findings offer valuable insights for governments, development practitioners, investment agencies, and researchers seeking community-driven developments in similar socio-economic contexts across Africa. For the first time, it can be adopted in the design and implementation of development projects in rural and local communities across Africa bringing into focus the need to integrate rights-based needs at the core of the project. In recent years, recovering precious and base metals such as silver and copper from end-of-life products has become a fundamental factor in the sustainable development of many countries. This not only supports environmental goals but is also a profitable economic activity. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the recovery of silver and copper from an end-of-life photovoltaic panel powder using an alternative leaching system containing sulfuric acid and ferric sulfate instead of nitric acid-based leaching systems, which are susceptible to producing hazardous gases such as NOx. To obtain this goal, a series of experiments were designed with the Central Composite Design (CCD) approach using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to evaluate the effect of reagent concentrations on the leaching rate. The leaching results showed that high recovery rates of silver (>85%) and copper (>96%) were achieved at room temperature using a solution containing only 0.2 M sulfuric acid and 0.15 M ferric sulfate. Analysis of variance was applied to the leaching data for silver and copper recovery, resulting in two statistical models that predict the leaching efficiency based on reagent concentrations. Results indicate that the models are statistically significant due to their high R2 (0.9988 and 0.9911 for Ag and Cu, respectively) and the low p-value of 0.0043 and 0.0003 for Ag and Cu, respectively. The models were optimized to maximize the dissolution of silver and copper using Design Expert software. Full article

Economically, all countries seek sustained growth driven by domestic demand, investment, and exports; however, COVID-19 revealed the vulnerability of interconnected economic systems and a sharp contraction in global trade. The objective of this research is to analyze through an econometric model the effect of traditional exports on Peru’s economic growth during the 2012–2023 period. The study employed a quantitative approach with a non-experimental, longitudinal design, using quarterly data from the Central Reserve Bank of Peru and the National Bureau of Statistics of China, which were transformed into natural logarithms. Unit root tests, the ordinary least squares (OLS) method and a two-stage least squares (2SLS) model were applied to correct for endogeneity. The results show that mining accounts for 81.7% of total traditional exports from Peru. The model indicated that a 1% increase in traditional exports leads to a 0.29% increase in GDP, confirming a positive impact. However, the high dependence of the mining sector exposes the economy to external risks. Therefore, a productive diversification strategy, alongside the modernization of the mining sector, is recommended to strengthen Peru’s economic resilience in the face of global crises and external fluctuations. This study proposes a novel hybrid forecasting approach designed explicitly for long-horizon financial time series. It incorporates LMD (Local Mean Decomposition), SD (Signal Decomposition), and sophisticated machine learning methods. The framework for the NASDAQ Composite Index begins by decomposing the original time series into stochastic and deterministic components using the LMD approach. This method effectively separates linear and nonlinear signal structures. The stochastic components are modeled using ARIMA to represent linear temporal dynamics, while the deterministic components are projected using cutting-edge machine learning methods, including XGBoost, Random Forest (RF), Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), and Support Vector Machines (SVMs). This study employs various statistical metrics to evaluate the predictive ability across both short-term noise and long-term trends, including Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and Directional Statistic (DS). Furthermore, the Diebold–Mariano test is used to determine the statistical significance of any forecast improvements. Empirical results demonstrate that the hybrid LMD–ARIMA–SD–XGBoost model consistently outperforms alternative configurations in terms of prediction accuracy and directional consistency. These findings demonstrate the advantages of integrating decomposition-based signal filtering with ensemble machine learning to improve the robustness and generalizability of long-term forecasting. This study presents a scalable and adaptive approach for modeling complex, nonlinear, and high-dimensional time series, thereby contributing to the enhancement of intelligent forecasting systems in the economic and financial sectors. As far as the authors are aware, this is the first study to combine XGBoost and LMD in a hybrid decomposition framework for forecasting long-horizon stock indexes. Full article

The Gunung Sewu UNESCO Global Geopark (GSUGGp) is one of Indonesia’s 12 UNESCO-designated geoparks. Its presence is expected to enhance rural development by boosting the local economy through tourism. However, there is a lack of statistical evidence quantifying the economic benefits of geopark development, mainly due to the complex, non-linear nature of these impacts and limited village-level economic data available in Indonesia. To address this gap, this study aims to measure how socio-economic and environmental factors contribute to the Village Development Index (VDI) within the GSUGGp area, which includes the districts of Gunung Kidul, Wonogiri, and Pacitan. A machine learning–deep learning approach was employed, utilizing four algorithms grouped into eight models, with hyperparameter tuning and cross-validation, tested on a sample of 92 villages. The analysis revealed insights into how 17 independent variables influence the VDI. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm outperformed others, achieving an R-squared of 0.76 and an RMSE of 0.040, surpassing random forest, CART, SVM, and linear models. Economically related factors—considered the foundation of rural development—had the strongest impact on village progress within GSUGGp. Additionally, features related to tourism, especially beach tourism linked to geological landscapes, contributed significantly. These findings are valuable for guiding geopark management and policy decisions, emphasizing the importance of integrated strategies and strong cooperation among local governments at the regency and provincial levels. Estimating the economic value of recreation and ecotourism is essential for sustainable ecosystem management and informed environmental policymaking. However, values derived from individual studies often vary because of subjective preferences and contextual variability, making it challenging to obtain generalizable estimates. To address this issue, this study employed a meta-regression analysis synthesizing 179 willingness-to-pay (WTP) observations obtained from 48 individual valuation studies conducted across various recreational and ecotourism sites in the Republic of Korea. Focusing specifically on national parks, which are prominent providers of cultural ecosystem services, we examined how site characteristics, study design factors, and valuation methodologies influenced estimated WTP values. Outliers were systematically identified and treated using statistical methods, with the random-effects model utilizing studentized residuals yielding the most robust results. Our findings revealed that national parks and studies employing the travel cost method (TCM) were associated with significantly higher WTP values. By applying the developed meta-regression model, we estimated that the total value of recreational and ecotourism services provided by national parks in the Republic of Korea was approximately USD 865.0 million in 2020. These results highlight the effectiveness of meta-regression analysis in synthesizing heterogeneous valuation studies, facilitating more accurate benefit transfers, and offering empirical insights to guide ecosystem service policy and management decisions. This study investigates the complex relationship between levels of religiosity and attitudes toward secularization among individuals receiving higher religious education in Türkiye. Secularization is defined as the diminishing influence of religion in public life and the rise of critical attitudes toward religious norms, a process that accelerated particularly during the modernization period following the establishment of the Republic. The primary aim of the research is to analyze whether there is a significant relationship between secular attitudes and the perceived influence of Islam among theology faculty students. The study employs a quantitative, descriptive survey design and includes a sample of 380 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students from the faculties of theology at Kocaeli, Sakarya, Marmara, and Istanbul universities. Data were collected using the “Perceived Influence of Religion Scale” and the “Secular Attitude Scale,” both of which demonstrated acceptable reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.70). Demographic variables such as age, gender, marital status, parental education level, type of education (formal or distance), and economic status were also incorporated into the analysis. The findings revealed statistically significant differences based on marital status, parental education level, type of education program, and previous educational background. For instance, single students reported perceiving a higher influence of religion compared to their married counterparts, while students with fathers who held university degrees perceived a lower influence of religion. These results offer valuable insights into how modern social transformations influence religious attitudes and practices. Full article

Oases in arid regions are critical ecosystems, providing essential ecological, agricultural, and socio-economic functions. However, urbanization and climate change increasingly threaten their sustainability. This study examines land cover (LULC) and land surface temperature (LST) dynamics in four representative North African oases: Tolga (Algeria), Nefta (Tunisia), Ghadames (Libya), and Siwa (Egypt) over the period 2000–2023, using Landsat satellite imagery. A three-step analysis was employed: calculation of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), NDBI (Normalized Difference Built-up Index), and LST, followed by supervised land cover classification and statistical tests to examine the relationships between the studied variables. The results reveal substantial reductions in bare soil (e.g., 48.10% in Siwa) and notable urban expansion (e.g., 136.01% in Siwa and 48.46% in Ghadames). Vegetation exhibited varied trends, with a slight decline in Tolga (0.26%) and a significant increase in Siwa (+27.17%). LST trends strongly correlated with land cover changes, demonstrating increased temperatures in urbanized areas and moderated temperatures in vegetated zones. Notably, this study highlights that traditional urban designs integrated with dense palm groves significantly mitigate thermal stress, achieving lower LST compared to modern urban expansions characterized by sparse, heat-absorbing surfaces. In contrast, areas dominated by fragmented vegetation or seasonal crops exhibited reduced cooling capacity, underscoring the critical role of vegetation type, spatial arrangement, and urban morphology in regulating oasis microclimates. Preserving palm groves, which are increasingly vulnerable to heat-driven pests, diseases and the introduction of exotic species grown for profit, together with a revival of the traditional compact urban fabric that provides shade and has been empirically confirmed by other oasis studies to moderate the microclimate more effectively than recent low-density extensions, will maintain the crucial synergy between buildings and vegetation, enhance the cooling capacity of these settlements, and safeguard their tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The global shift toward sustainable transportation has gained increasing interest, promoting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional vehicles as a result of a complex interaction between economic incentives, social dynamics, and environmental imperatives. This study is based on the Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) to understand the key factors influencing consumers’ intentions in the Sultanate of Oman toward adopting electric vehicles. It is based on a mixed methodology combining quantitative data from a questionnaire of 448 participants, analyzed using ordinal logistic regression, with qualitative thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with 18 EV owners. Its results reveal that performance expectations, trust in EV technology, and social influence are the strongest predictors of EV adoption intentions in Oman. These findings suggest that some issues related to charging infrastructure, access to maintenance services, and cost-benefit ratio are key considerations that influence consumers’ intention to accept and use EVs. Conversely, recreational motivation is not a statistically significant factor, which suggests that consumers focus on practical and economic motivations when deciding to adopt EVs rather than on their enjoyment of driving the vehicle. The research and development of the next generation of supersonic transports (SSTs) meets economic and environmental problems. An SST encounters critical challenges, including the need for low fuel consumption, low noise, and low gas emissions. Currently, the feasibility of developing SSTs is increasing through the application of cutting-edge technologies, such as composite materials, advanced electric systems, sustainable aviation fuel, and innovative design methodologies. The object of this study was to perform the conceptual design of a 50-seat supersonic transport utilizing general conceptual design methods. In estimating weight and flight performance, statistical formulae were correlated with data from civil supersonic and subsonic jet transports. For wing sizing, carpet plots were created to explore the optimal combination of wing aspect ratio and wing loading. The results suggested that by utilizing advanced technologies, such as the use of a composite material for the structure, the maximum takeoff weight can potentially be reduced while still meeting design requirements. The constraint of climb gradient largely affects the maximum takeoff weight, and it is anticipated that flight performance at low speeds will be improved. Full article

The evaluation of climate change effects on airport infrastructures is important to maintain safety and flexibility in air travel operations. Airports are particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events and temperature fluctuations, which can disrupt operations, compromise passenger safety, and cause economic losses. Issues such as flooded runways and the disruption of power supplies highlight the need for strong adaptation strategies. The study focuses on the application of the high-resolution regional model COSMO-CLM to assess climate change impacts on Roma Fiumicino airport (Italy) under the IPCC RCP8.5 scenario. The complex topography of Italy requires fine-scale simulation to catch localized climate dynamics. By employing advanced statistical methods, such as fractal analysis, this research aims to increase an understanding of climate change and improve the model prediction capability. The findings provide valuable insights for designing resilient airport infrastructures and updating operational protocols in view of evolving climate risks. A consistent increase in daily temperatures is projected, along with a modest positive trend in annual precipitation. The use of advanced statistical methods revealed insights into the fractal dimensions and frequency components of climate variables, showing an increasing complexity and variability of future climatic patterns. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), also referred to as nosocomial or hospital-acquired infections, are a significant cause of death worldwide, with hand hygiene being the most powerful means to tackle them. The present study had a twofold aim: first, to assess the level of knowledge and the degree of compliance with hand hygiene practices based on healthcare workers’ self-reports; second, to evaluate whether behavioral economics techniques, specifically a poster combining an image and an informational message, designed according to the published literature, can increase the level of healthcare workers’ compliance with hand hygiene. Factors that potentially affect compliance were also examined. This study involved distributing a questionnaire to healthcare workers in Greek public hospitals, from which 314 completed responses were collected during the last quarter of 2023. Participants were randomly and evenly assigned to an intervention group that received a nudging poster or to a control group, which did not. Self-reported compliance with hand hygiene practices was high, based on two latent variables derived through exploratory factor analysis, although knowledge of germ transmission was moderate, as reflected in the relevant knowledge question scores. However, nudging had no statistically significant effect on hand hygiene behavior. Compliance was associated with several factors, including gender, age, work experience, profession, perceived adequacy of available hygiene-related resources, and perceived consequences of nosocomial infections on patient outcomes.
