Magnetron Sputter Vacuum Deposition (MSVD) has undergone significant advancements since its inception. This review explores the evolution of MSVD, encompassing its fundamental principles, various techniques (including reactive sputtering, pulsed magnetron sputtering, and high-power impulse magnetron sputtering), and its wide-ranging industrial applications. While detailing the advantages of high deposition rates, versatility in material selection, and precise control over film properties, the review also addresses inherent challenges such as low target utilization and plasma instability. A significant portion focuses on the crucial role of MSVD in the automotive industry, highlighting its use in creating durable, high-quality coatings for both aesthetic and functional purposes. The transition from traditional electroplating methods to more environmentally friendly MSVD techniques is also discussed, emphasizing the growing demand for sustainable manufacturing processes. Physical, Mechanical, and Durability Behavior of Sustainable Mortars with Construction and Demolition Waste as Supplementary Cementitious Material

The construction industry plays a major role in the consumption of natural resources and the generation of waste. Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is produced in substantial volumes globally and is widely available. Its accumulation poses serious challenges related to storage and disposal, highlighting the need for effective strategies to mitigate the associated environmental impacts of the sector. This investigation intends to evaluate the influence of mixed CDW on the physical, mechanical, and durability properties of mortars with CDW partially replacing Portland cement, and allow performance comparisons with mortars produced with fly ash, a commonly used supplementary binder in cement-based materials. Thus, three mortar formulations were developed (reference mortar, mortar with 25% CDW, and mortars with 25% fly ash) and several characterization tests were carried out on the CDW powder and the developed mortars. The work’s principal findings revealed that through mechanical grinding processes, it was possible to obtain a CDW powder suitable for cement replacement and with good indicators of pozzolanic activity. The physical properties of the mortars revealed a decrease of about 10% in water absorption by immersion, which resulted in improved performance regarding durability, especially with regard to the lower carbonation depth (−1.1 mm), and a decrease of 51% in the chloride diffusion coefficient, even compared to mortars incorporating fly ash. However, the mechanical performance of the mortars incorporating CDW was reduced (25% in terms of flexural strength and 58% in terms of compressive strength), but their practical applicability was never compromised and their mechanical performance proved to be superior to that of mortars incorporating fly ash. Electric motors play a decisive role in electric vehicles by converting electrical energy into mechanical motion across various drivetrain components. However, failures in these motors can interrupt the motor function, with approximately 40% of these failures stemming from bearing issues. Key contributors to bearing degradation include shaft voltage, bearing current, and electric discharge material spalling current, especially in motors powered by inverters or variable frequency drives. This review explores the tribological and vibrational aspects of bearing currents, analyzing their mechanisms and influence on electric motor performance. It addresses the challenges faced by electric vehicles, such as high-speed operation, elevated temperatures, electrical conductivity, and energy efficiency. This study investigates the origins of bearing currents, damage linked to shaft voltage and electric discharge material spalling current, and the effects of lubricant properties on bearing functionality. Moreover, it covers various methods for measuring shaft voltage and bearing current, as well as strategies to alleviate the adverse impacts of bearing currents. This comprehensive analysis aims to shed light on the detrimental effects of bearing currents on the performance and lifespan of electric motors in electric vehicles, emphasizing the importance of tribological considerations for reliable operation and durability. The aim of this study is to address the engineering problem of bearing failure in inverter-fed EV motors by integrating electrical, tribological, and lubrication perspectives. The novelty lies in proposing a conceptual link between lubricant breakdown and damage morphology to guide mitigation strategies. The study tasks include literature review, analysis of bearing current mechanisms and diagnostics, and identification of technological trends. The findings provide insights into lubricant properties and diagnostic approaches that can support industrial solutions. Full article

Processed sea sand has emerged as a viable alternative to traditional fine aggregates in the Sri Lankan construction industry. Despite its economic and environmental advantages, concerns over residual seashell content have limited its widespread adoption by local contractors. Residual seashell content, typically ranging from 1% to 3% after processing, has raised concerns about its impact on the performance of concrete. This study systematically investigates the influence of seashell fragments, with a content of up to 5%, on the fresh, mechanical, and durability properties of sea sand concrete and mortar. Experimental results indicate that workability remains stable, with minor variations across the tested range of shell content. Compressive strength remains relatively consistent from 0% to 5% seashells, indicating that seashell content does not significantly impact the strength within this range. Durability tests reveal minimal effects of shell content on concrete performance within the tested shell range, as indicated by results for water absorption, rapid chloride penetration, and acid exposure testing. Accelerated corrosion indicates that the typical shell content does not increase corrosion risk; however, high shell content (>3%) can compromise corrosion durability. Overall, these findings demonstrate that the mechanical and durability performance of sea sand concrete remains uncompromised at typical seashell content levels (1–3%), supporting the use of processed sea sand as a sustainable and viable alternative to traditional fine aggregates in Sri Lankan construction. The article presents a comprehensive review of key issues and challenges related to enhancing the durability of hot forging tools. It discusses modern strategies aimed at increasing tool life, including modifications to tool materials, heat treatment, surface engineering, tool and die design, die geometry, tribological conditions, and lubrication. The review is based on extensive literature data, including recent publications and the authors’ own research, which has been implemented under industrial conditions at the modern forging facility in Forge Plant “Glinik” (Poland). The study introduces original design and technological solutions, such as an innovative concept for manufacturing forging dies from alloy structural steels with welded impressions, replacing traditional hot-work tool steel dies. It also proposes a zonal hardfacing approach, which involves applying welds with different chemical compositions to specific surface zones of the die impressions, selected according to the dominant wear mechanisms in each zone. General guidelines for selecting hardfacing material compositions are also provided. Additionally, the article presents technological processes for die production and regeneration. The importance and application of computer simulations of forging processes are emphasized, particularly in predicting wear mechanisms and intensity, as well as in optimizing tool and forging geometry. Collagen implants in neurosurgery are widely used due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to support tissue regeneration, but their mechanical properties, such as low tensile strength and susceptibility to enzymatic degradation, remain challenging. Current technologies are improving these implants through cross-linking, synthetic reinforcements, and advanced manufacturing techniques such as 3D bioprinting to improve durability and predictability. Industry 4.0 is contributing to this by automating production, using data analytics and machine learning to optimize implant properties and ensure quality control. In Industry 5.0, the focus is shifting to personalization, enabling the creation of patient-specific implants through human–machine collaboration and advanced biofabrication. eHealth integrates digital monitoring systems, enabling real-time tracking of implant healing and performance to inform personalized care. Despite progress, challenges such as cost, material property variability, and scalability for mass production remain. The future lies in smart biomaterials, AI-driven design, and precision biofabrication, which could mean the possibility of creating more effective, accessible, and patient-specific collagen implants. Enhancing the wear resistance of structural steels used in demanding industrial applications is critical for extending components’ lifespan and ensuring mechanical reliability. In this study, we investigated the influence of flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) hardfacing on the tensile behavior of S355MC steel. Protective Fe-Cr-C alloy layers were deposited in one and two successive passes using automated FCAW, followed by tensile testing of specimens oriented at varying angles relative to the weld bead direction. The methodology integrated 3D scanning and digital image correlation to accurately capture geometric and deformation parameters. The experimental results revealed a consistent reduction in tensile strength and ductility in all the welded configurations compared to the base material. The application of the second weld layer further intensified this effect, while specimen orientation influenced the degree of mechanical degradation. Microstructural analysis confirmed carbide refinement and good adhesion, but also identified welding-induced defects and residual stresses as factors that contributed to performance loss. The findings highlight a clear trade-off between improved surface wear resistance and compromised structural properties, underscoring the importance of process optimization. Strategic selection of welding parameters and bead orientation is essential to balance functional durability with mechanical integrity in industrial applications. Full article

Furunculosis caused by Aeromonas salmonicida poses a significant challenge to the sustainable production of maraena whitefish (Coregonus maraena). This case report outlines a multi-year disease management strategy at a European whitefish facility with two production departments, each specialising in different life-cycle stages. Recurrent outbreaks of A. salmonicida necessitated the development of effective vaccination protocols. Herd-specific immersion vaccines failed to confer protection, while injectable formulations with plant-based adjuvants caused severe adverse reactions and mortality rates exceeding 30%. In contrast, the bivalent vaccine Alpha Ject 3000, containing inactivated A. salmonicida and Vibrio anguillarum with a mineral oil adjuvant, yielded high tolerability and durable protection in over one million whitefish. Post-vaccination mortality remained low (3.3%), aligning with industry benchmarks, and furunculosis-related losses were fully prevented in both departments. Transcriptomic profiling of immune-relevant tissues revealed distinct gene expression signatures depending on vaccine type and time post-vaccination. Both the herd-specific vaccine and Alpha Ject 3000 induced the expression of immunoglobulin and inflammatory markers in the spleen, contrasted by reduced immunoglobulin transcript levels in the gills and head kidney together with the downregulated expression of B-cell markers. These results demonstrate that an optimised injectable vaccination strategy can significantly improve health outcomes and disease resilience in maraena whitefish aquaculture. Full article

The global cement industry remains a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, prompting substantial research efforts toward sustainable construction materials. Lithium slag (LS), a by-product of lithium extraction, has attracted attention as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). This review synthesizes experimental findings on LS replacement levels, fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths), time-dependent deformation (shrinkage and creep), and durability (sulfate, acid, abrasion, and thermal) of LS-modified concretes. Statistical analysis identifies an optimal LS dosage of 20–30% (average 24%) for maximizing compressive strength and long-term durability, with 40% as a practical upper limit for tensile and flexural performance. Fresh-state tests show that workability losses at high LS content can be mitigated via superplasticizers. Drying shrinkage and creep strains decrease in a dose-dependent manner with up to 30% LS. High-volume (40%) LS blends achieve up to an 18% gain in 180-day compressive strength and >30% reduction in permeability metrics. Under elevated temperatures, 20% LS mixes retain up to 50% more residual strength than controls. In advanced systems—autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), one-part geopolymers, and recycled aggregate composites—LS further enhances both microstructural densification and durability. In particular, LS emerges as a versatile SCM that optimizes mechanical and durability performance, supports material circularity, and reduces the carbon footprint. Full article

In response to the escalating climate crisis, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) has become a top priority for both the public and private sectors. The pavement industry plays a key role in this transition, offering innovative technologies that minimize environmental impacts without compromising performance. Among these, the incorporation of recycled tire rubber and warm-mix asphalt (WMA) additives represents a promising strategy to reduce energy consumption and resource depletion in road construction. This study conducts a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental performance of an asphalt pavement incorporating recycled rubber and a WMA additive—referred to as R-W asphalt—against a conventional hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement. The analysis follows the ISO 14040/44 standards, covering material production, transport, construction, and maintenance. Two service-life scenarios are considered: one assuming equivalent durability and another with a five-year extension for the R-W pavement. The results demonstrate environmental impact reductions of up to 57%, with average savings ranging from 32% to 52% across key impact categories such as climate change, land use, and resource use. These benefits are primarily attributed to lower production temperatures and extended maintenance intervals. The findings underscore the potential of R-W asphalt as a cleaner engineering solution aligned with circular economy principles and climate mitigation goals. Full article

As an efficient clean energy technology, water electrolysis for hydrogen production has its efficiency limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, which drives the demand for the development of high-performance anode OER catalysts. This work constructs bimetallic (Al, Mn) co-doped nanoporous spinel CoFe2O4 (np-CFO) with a tunable structure and composition as an OER catalyst through a simple two-step dealloying strategy. The as-formed np-CFO (Al and Mn) features a hierarchical flaky configuration; that is, there are a large number of fine nanosheets attached to the surface of a regular micron-sized flake, which not only increases the number of active sites but also enhances mass transport efficiency. Consequently, the optimized catalyst exhibits a low OER overpotential of only 320 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a minimal Tafel slope of 45.09 mV dec−1, and exceptional durability. Even under industrial conditions (6 M KOH, 60 °C), it only needs 1.83 V to achieve a current density of 500 mA cm−2 and can maintain good stability for approximately 100 h at this high current density. Theoretical simulations indicate that Al and Mn co-doping could indeed optimize the electronic structure of CFO and thus decrease the energy barrier of OER to 1.35 eV. This work offers a practical approach towards synthesizing efficient and stable OER catalysts. Full article

This study evaluates the replacement of petroleum-based naphthenic oil with four types of soybean-derived alternatives—virgin soybean oil (SBO), epoxidized SBO (ESBO), expired SBO, and recycled SBO—in styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) composites. The materials were tested in both staining rubber (SR) and non-staining rubber (NSR) systems to assess processing characteristics, mechanical performance, and environmental durability. Among the alternatives, SBO demonstrated the best overall performance, improving processability and tensile strength by over 10%, while ESBO enhanced ozone resistance by 35% due to its epoxide functionality. Expired and recycled SBOs maintained essential mechanical properties within 90% of virgin SBO values. The full replacement of CH450 with SBO in tire prototypes resulted in burst strength exceeding 1000 kPa and stable appearance after 5000 km of road testing. To validate industrial relevance, the developed green tire was exhibited at the 2025 Taipei International Cycle Show, attracting interest from international buyers and stakeholders for its eco-friendly composition and carbon footprint reduction potential, thereby demonstrating both technical feasibility and commercial viability. Replacing clinker with SCMs, such as volcanic lapillus, can reduce the environmental impact while maintaining adequate mechanical properties. Experiments were conducted to replace up to 20 wt% of limestone Portland cement with volcanic lapillus. Workability, compressive strength, microstructure, resistance to alkali-silica reaction (ASR), sulfate, and chloride penetration were analyzed. The results showed that up to 10% replacement had a minimal effect on mechanical properties, while higher percentages resulted in reduced strength but still improved some durability features. The control sample cured 28 days showed a compressive strength of 43.05 MPa compared with 36.89 MPa for the sample containing 10% lapillus. After 90 days the respective values for the above samples were 44.76 MPa and 44.57 MPa. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed good gel–aggregate adhesion, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed reduced calcium hydroxide content, indicating pozzolanic activity. Overall, volcanic lapillus shows promise as a sustainable SCM, offering CO2 reduction and durability benefits, although higher replacement rates require further optimization. Full article

Electroless nickel deposition (ELD) is an autocatalytic technique extensively used to impart conductive, protective, and mechanical functionalities to inherently non-conductive synthetic substrates. This review systematically explores the fundamental mechanisms of electroless nickel deposition, emphasising recent advancements in surface activation methods, solvent systems, and microstructural control. Critical analysis reveals that bio-inspired activation methods, such as polydopamine (PDA) and tannic acid (TA), significantly enhance coating adhesion and durability compared to traditional chemical etching and plasma treatments. Additionally, solvent engineering, particularly using polar aprotic solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethanol-based systems, emerges as a key strategy for achieving uniform, dense, and flexible coatings, overcoming limitations associated with traditional aqueous baths. The review also highlights that microstructural tailoring, specifically the development of amorphous-nanocrystalline hybrid nickel coatings, effectively balances mechanical robustness (hardness exceeding 800 HV), flexibility, and corrosion resistance, making these coatings particularly suitable for wearable electronic textiles and smart materials. Furthermore, commercial examples demonstrate the real-world applicability and market readiness of nickel-coated synthetic fibres. Despite significant progress, persistent challenges remain, including reliable long-term adhesion, internal stress management, and environmental sustainability. Future research should prioritise environmentally benign plating baths, standardised surface activation protocols, and scalable deposition processes to fully realise the industrial potential of electroless nickel coatings. Theoretical Study of CO Oxidation on Pt Single-Atom Catalyst Decorated C3N Monolayers with Nitrogen Vacancies

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a major toxic gas emitted from vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, and incomplete fuel combustion, posing serious environmental and health risks. Catalytic oxidation of CO into less harmful CO2 is an effective strategy to reduce these emissions. In this study, we investigated the catalytic performance of platinum (Pt) single atoms doped on C3N monolayers with various vacancy defects, including single carbon (CV) and nitrogen (NV) vacancies, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that Pt@NV-C3N exhibited the most favorable catalytic properties, with the highest O2 adsorption energy (−3.07 eV). This performance significantly outperforms Pt atoms doped at other vacancies. It can be attributed to the strong binding between Pt and nitrogen vacancies, which contributes to its excellent resistance to Pt aggregation. CO oxidation on Pt@NV-C3N proceeds via the Eley–Rideal (ER2) mechanism with a low activation barrier of 0.41 eV for the rate-determining step, indicating high catalytic efficiency at low temperatures. These findings suggest that Pt@NV-C3N is a promising candidate for CO oxidation, contributing to developing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable catalysts. The strong binding of Pt atoms to the nitrogen vacancies prevents aggregation, ensuring the stability and durability of the catalyst. The kinetic modeling further revealed that the ER2 mechanism offers the highest reaction rate constants over a wide temperature range (273–700 K). The low activation energy barrier also facilitates CO oxidation at lower temperatures, addressing critical challenges in automotive and industrial pollution control. This study provides valuable theoretical insights for designing advanced single-atom catalysts for environmental remediation applications. Full article
