Traditional signal processing methods for rotating machinery fault diagnosis rely heavily on human experience, while deep learning models often suffer from unstable classification boundaries and poor generalization under complex operating conditions. To address these issues, this paper proposes a hybrid fault diagnosis method based on CWT and CNN-DOA-LSSVM. Firstly, CWT is employed to convert one-dimensional vibration signals into high-resolution time-frequency maps, fully highlighting the transient impact features of faults. Secondly, CNNs automatically extract deep discriminative features, avoiding the cumbersome process of manual feature engineering. Thirdly, LSSVM replaces the Softmax classification layer in traditional CNNs to overcome the deficiency of the Softmax classifier in nonlinear classification. Finally, by leveraging the two-stage separation mechanism of exploration and exploitation in DOA, along with its unique forgetting-supplement and dream-sharing strategies, an adaptive optimal configuration of the key parameters of LSSVM is achieved. Validation results on the Southeast University gearbox dataset and the Huazhong University of Science and Technology bearing dataset show that the proposed method achieves average classification accuracies of 99.59% and 99.50%, respectively, demonstrating good performance in both classification accuracy and stability. The transition toward a circular economy has made industrial symbiosis an important approach for improving resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact, especially for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, the extent to which SMEs can adopt these practices differs across countries. This study aims to explore the readiness of SMEs for industrial symbiosis in Türkiye, Jordan, Portugal, and Croatia, and to propose a digital model that can support this transition. The research is based on a qualitative, literature-driven comparative analysis examining institutional structures, technological capacity, sectoral characteristics, and collaboration networks in each country. The findings indicate that, despite contextual differences, all four countries face similar challenges, such as limited data sharing, insufficient digital infrastructure, and weak inter-firm cooperation. While EU member states demonstrate more developed policy frameworks, implementation gaps remain evident across cases. Building on these insights, the study introduces the Digital Recycling and Material Network (DREAM) model, a digital platform that connects waste-generating firms, recycling companies, and businesses that use secondary raw materials. The model enables real-time data sharing and supports sustainability-oriented matching mechanisms. Overall, the study suggests that digital platforms like DREAM can play a key role in strengthening industrial symbiosis practices and supporting SMEs in their transition toward circular production systems. Structural symmetry appears as a natural feature in both optimal solution landscapes and hospital scheduling behaviors, representing an inherent balance that can be deliberately leveraged to improve how quickly algorithms converge and how reliably systems perform in intricate healthcare optimization contexts. Managing hospital resources is a multifaceted challenge that requires simultaneously addressing several competing goals, such as reducing costs, improving patient experiences, making the most of available resources, distributing staff workload fairly, and strengthening readiness for emergencies. Traditional optimization approaches frequently struggle to cope with the complexity and ever-changing nature of modern healthcare environments. To address this gap, this study introduces a novel Multi-Objective Dream Optimization Algorithm (MO-DOA) tailored for smart healthcare resource management, which adapts a biologically inspired optimization framework to meet the specific demands of healthcare settings. The MO-DOA is built around three core mechanisms: a foundational memory component that retains high-quality solutions, a forgetting-supplementation component that maintains a productive balance between exploration and exploitation, and a dream-sharing component that promotes diversity among candidate solutions. Rigorous testing across realistic hospital environments confirms MO-DOA’s outstanding effectiveness, with results showing a 21.86% gain in resource utilization, a 30.95% decrease in patient waiting times, a 19.06% boost in patient satisfaction, and a 29.56% improvement in how evenly staff workloads are distributed. The algorithm’s emergency response capabilities are especially noteworthy, achieving bed assignments within 4.23 min and an equipment deployment success rate of 94.56%. Computationally, the algorithm proves highly efficient, with an average response time of 18.87 s and strong scalability across different operational scales. Collectively, these findings position MO-DOA as a powerful and practical tool for optimizing hospital operations in real time. Full article

In recent years, for higher education—especially in the United States—spirituality has emerged as a prominent topic on campus, both in curricular and co-curricular formats. Historically, religion has played a large role in the foundations and even missions of many universities, but in the modern era, especially for public universities, personal spirituality has become the frequent way in which topics such as meaning, values, compassion, and mindfulness are addressed. Meaning is an especially prominent theme—not only “the meaning of life” but also “meaning in life” and the individual student’s experience of “the search for meaning.” This essay explores not only previous research and theoretical proposals on the links between spirituality and meaning, but it also proposes ways in which spirituality and well-being can be relevant topics for curriculum offerings in modern universities. The essay provides one illustrative example of a way to create learning structures to support students’ exploration of practices from personal spirituality (e.g., mindfulness practices, values clarification, reflective journaling, and dream study) and how such practices can promote an enhanced sense of meaning in one’s life. The essay concludes with thoughts regarding ways in which interested faculty might collaborate to share best practices on the modern university campus to support students’ spiritual growth and their search for meaning in life. Designers working towards social change have often focused on designing discrete solutions to social problems, rather than working within the long-term world-making practices of movements. This paper examines the potential of a more embedded design practice within prefigurative movements, where mutual aid networks, worker cooperatives, and other solidarity economy initiatives are already developing alternative systems in the present. What if we could design everyday tools with these collectives to embody their transformative visions? Yet it can be difficult to design for transformation collaboratively. Collectives include members with diverse visions that can conflict, as well as different ideas about how to create change. To explore these challenges, I discuss a project that guided local prefigurative collectives in articulating and sharing their visions of a future 100 years beyond the fall of capitalism by co-creating an illustrated map. The project achieved the collaborative articulation of transformed futures, and it also initiated a dialogue on how to design for these transformative visions today. Moving forward, the project raises questions about the risks of sharing diverging visions while attempting to build coalitions, as well as the opportunity to clarify where our dreams overlap and diverge, empowering collective members to take non-normative steps with confidence. The Aquila Optimizer (AO) is a novel and efficient optimization algorithm inspired by the hunting and searching behavior of Aquila. However, the AO faces limitations when tackling high-dimensional and complex optimization problems due to insufficient search capabilities and a tendency to prematurely converge to local optima, which restricts its overall performance. To address these challenges, this study proposes the Multi-Strategy Aquila Optimizer (MSAO) by integrating multiple enhancement techniques. Firstly, the MSAO introduces a random sub-dimension update mechanism, significantly enhancing its exploration capacity in high-dimensional spaces. Secondly, it incorporates memory strategy and dream-sharing strategy from the Dream Optimization Algorithm (DOA), thereby achieving a balance between global exploration and local exploitation. Additionally, the MSAO employs adaptive parameter and dynamic opposition-based learning to further refine the AO’s original update rules, making them more suitable for a multi-strategy collaborative framework. In the experiment, the MSAO outperform eight state-of-the-art algorithms, including CEC-winning and enhanced AO variants, achieving the best optimization results on 55%, 69%, 69%, and 72% of the benchmark functions, respectively, which demonstrates its outstanding performance. Furthermore, ablation experiments validate the independent contributions of each proposed strategy, and the application of MSAO to five engineering problems confirms its strong practical value and potential for broader adoption. Are wartime dream diaries a testimony to violence and its impact on society and culture? Do dreams shape and respond to history and the collective remembrance of war? This article argues that wartime dream collections constitute a testimonial practice that brings visibility to experiences hidden from the public domain and missing from dominant discourses on war. Connecting post-2022 Ukrainian dream diaries and theoretical contributions to cultural dream analysis by Charlotte Beradt, Georges Didi-Huberman, and Wilfred Bion, I argue that recognizing dream sharing as witnessing raises ethical and political questions because it is not a constative speech act, but a form of thinking about and action on history. Within this ethical–political perspective, sharing dreams is never merely about relaying contents to the reader but a relational act of self-disclosure. I conclude that to read records of war dreams is inseparable from being called upon to receive and offer hospitality to a dream. Full article

Owning a home has become a distant, often unattainable dream for many Americans since the 2007–2009 recession. The shortage of homes has decreased affordability, forcing 43 million U.S. households to become renters rather than owners. Racially targeted policies and widespread discrimination, coupled with neoliberal urban renewal policies, have forced communities of color, especially immigrants and the foreign-born, at the greatest disadvantage in homeownership. This paper examines tract-scale disparities in homeownership across major racial/ethnic groups. Using the U.S. Census Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) 2019 definition of the 13-county-metropolitan statistical area (MSA) of Nashville, Tennessee, as the study area, I use five-year American Community Survey (ACS) (2015–2019) data estimates to examine the spatial disparity in homeownership and its predictors. Nashville MSA is one of the fastest-growing southern gateways, and it is also the largest, most diverse, and most intermixed metropolis in Tennessee. It contains higher than the state’s overall share of foreign-born, and during 2019–2040, its share of immigrants is projected to grow by 40.7%, making it the best-suited laboratory for race/immigrant-focused research on housing. This analysis finds significant differences in race-based mean per-capita income, with Whites ($32,522) and Asians ($32,556) at the top, whereas Blacks ($25,062) and Hispanics ($20,091) are at the lowest. The ratio of race-based per-capita-income-versus-median housing values is the highest for Whites (15.19) and Asians (15.07) and the lowest for Blacks (11.49) and Hispanics (9.27), putting these two groups as the most disadvantaged regarding their affordability. Regression models suggest lower White homeownership in higher diversity tracts among foreign-born-not-citizens (FBNCs), whereas Black and Hispanic homeownerships are higher in tracts with higher diversity among FBNCs. Interestingly, Asian homeownership is high in tracts with high-income Black tracts, pointing toward the increasing significance of class. Full article

Human beings have had beautiful dreams for a harmonious world since centuries ago; this can be termed cosmopolitanism, shijie datong, or global community. Based on theories expounded by Confucius, Tönnies, Anderson, Bauman, Derrida, and Appiah, we closely examine the concept of “global cultural community” or “international community”, that is, the community involving individuals or groups of two or more countries by way of textual analysis, with James Welch’s The Heartsong of Charging Elk as an example. Through an analysis of the plot in the novel, we find that the American Indian protagonist Charging Elk integrates into the local French culture, while retaining his indigenous cultural identity, and thus negotiates a global community. This finding is also evaluated in the context of all five novels by Welch and in a broader scope of American Indian literature with inter-continental themes. The studies on cosmopolitanism or global community in American Indian literature can play an important role in exploring the construction of a global community for humanity for a shared future. Ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean cosmologies shared general assumptions about the interconnectivity of heaven and earth. Plato’s Myth of Er, the Book of the Watchers in 1 Enoch, and Cicero’s Dream of Scipio, narrate the travels of Er, Enoch, and Scipio, respectively, into the Beyond, where they each learn astonishing things about the cosmos, and are tasked with imparting a message to humanity. This comparative study argues that cosmic travel is an integral means of constructing a rhetoric of authority designed to recruit its audiences to its socio-political vision. By analysing literary conventions like pseudepigraphy and epiphany in the features that make up cosmic travel, we better understand how each story bridges the gap between the narrated (story) world and the external (real) world. The ability to blend the realities of a story and its audiences stems from the ways in which tropes of legitimacy render spatio-temporal reality malleable, but is also imperative to the very authority these tropes offer. Without arguing for deliberate intertextuality between all these sources, this study compares the use of heavenly voyages as a literary device for legitimising worldview across cultures, times, and places. Pope Francis’s dream for a synodal Church has implications for Catholic schools globally, but what exactly are these consequences? This paper explores Francis’s vision in the context of Canadian Catholic schools in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories (NWT), where these schools are fully-funded by the government and enroll nearly a quarter million students. Ten exploratory interviews with chief superintendents from these schools—which formed the basis of a larger study—were analyzed to understand potential connections to Francis’s vision and his four commitments to synodality: focusing on relationships, a culture of encounter, the essentials of the Christian faith, and local decision-making. The pope differentiates synodality from democratic forms of leadership and demands a communal form of listening and discerning God’s Spirit. While the superintendents’ style of leadership appeared to mirror synodality in many ways, predominant issues remain to be explored: an emphasis on relationships upends the status quo and gives new directions for the schools; encountering others will inevitably demand prophetic leadership by the system leaders; leading with the essentials of faith will not please everyone in Catholic schooling; and shared authority among the superintendents, bishops, and trustees requires further dialogue. According to the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change, aviation contributes to only about 2% to anthropogenic global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, in view of the growing market demand and the dramatic reductions in other transport sectors, including maritime and automotive, the aviation sector’s percentage impact on global GHG emissions is expected to reach 50% of the transport share by 2040. High-speed aviation exploiting liquid hydrogen as the propellant can represent a valuable solution toward the decarbonization of the sector. However, to avoid jeopardizing the dream of a new generation of high-speed aircraft, it will be necessary to introduce non-CO2 emissions estimations beginning with the design process. To unlock the possibility of anticipating the nitrogen oxides emissions estimation, the authors developed the hydrogen and high-speed P3-T3 methodology (H2-P3T3), an evolution of the widely used P3-T3 method, properly conceived to support (i) innovative air-breathing propulsive systems for supersonic and hypersonic flights and (ii) greener fuels, such as hydrogen. This paper presents a step-by-step approach to developing novel analytical formulations customized for an Air Turbo-Rocket engine and discusses the discovered correlation of nitrogen oxides production with the fuel-to-air ratio (FAR), the Mach number, and the Damköhler number (Da), the last being a nondimensional variable directly related to hydrogen/air combustion, considering the matching between the residence time and the ignition delay times. The most complete formulation allows for reduction in the prediction errors below 5%. Full article

Haniya Yutaka (1909–1997) was one of the leading figures in postwar Japanese literature and avant-garde art movements, chiefly remembered today for his unfinished metaphysical novel Dead Souls [Shirei, 1946–1997]. This essay, however, examines his hitherto unknown theoretical writings on film. Haniya and other writers gathering around the literary magazine Kindai bungaku [Modern Literature, 1946–1964] shared a keen interest in film’s unparalleled importance in twentieth-century modernity. And their collective efforts to transgress conventional boundaries between literature and film culminated in the 1957 publication of the anthology entitled Literary Film Theory [Bungakuteki eigaron]. Above all, Haniya’s film writing was clearly distinguished for its tendency to explicate film’s paradoxical mode of existence philosophically, an approach that the film critic Matsuda Masao later called an “ontological film theory” [sonzaironteki eigaron]. Looking closely at his essays and interviews collected in Literary Film Theory and two other volumes on this topic—Thoughts in the Darkness [Yami no naka no shisō, 1962] and Dreaming in the Darkness [Yami no naka no musō, 1982]—the present essay reads Haniya’s theorization of cinema in relation to both Martin Heidegger’s existential phenomenology and recent scholarly debates on non-Western film theory. This paper examines the gothic fairy tale in Carmen Maria Machado’s memoir In the Dream House and short story “The Husband Stitch” with a focus on Bluebeard’s insistent presence and the interweaving of reality, gothic horror, and fairy tale. In the memoir, Machado restages her experience of queer intimate partner violence in the form of a gothic fairy tale as “The Queen and the Squid”, reminiscent of the tale of Bluebeard’s latest wife. By including gothic fairy-tale elements in the autobiographical text, Machado blurs the boundaries between the fictional and non-fictional realm, between her story and that of Bluebeard’s latest wife, thereby rewriting the tale for a queer context. The annotation of the memoir using Stith Thompson’s Motif-Index of Folk-Literature further superimposes the fairy tale onto Dream House. Machado’s short story “The Husband Stitch” is a gender-aware inversion of “Bluebeard”. The reappearance of the tale throughout Machado’s work reveals the persistence of abusive behavioral patterns in relationships to the present day. Machado’s intertextual storytelling blurs the lines between autobiographical events and the tale of Bluebeard’s latest wife, creating a shared narrative universe of experiences of women who have dealt with their own iteration of Bluebeard. People with disabilities are underrepresented in STEM as well as information, communication, and technology (ICT) careers. The underrepresentation of individuals with disabilities in STEM may reflect systemic issues of access. Curricular materials that allow students to demonstrate their current fraction knowledge through multiple means and provide opportunities to share and explain their thinking with others may address issues of access students face in elementary school. In this study, we employed a sequential mixed-methods design to investigate how game-enhanced fraction intervention impacts students’ fraction knowledge, engagement, and STEM interests. Quantitative results revealed statistically significant effects of the program on students’ fraction understanding and engagement but not their STEM interest. Qualitative analyses revealed three themes—(1) Accessible, Enjoyable Learning, (2) Can’t Relate, and (3) Dreaming Bigger—that provided contextual backing for the quantitative results. Implications for future research and development are shared. Full article
