The study investigates the contribution of technology (TECH), quantified by Internet penetration, in influencing tourism performance (TP) among the top ten touristic nations in Europe: France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Austria, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Using panel data from 2000–2022, the study includes additional structural controls like environment quality, gross domestic production (GDP) per capita, exchange rate (ER), and safety index (SI). The Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) is employed to capture heterogeneous effects at different levels of TP, and Driscoll–Kraay standard error (DKSE) correction is employed to make the analysis robust against autocorrelation as well as cross-sectional dependence. Spectral–Granger causality tests are also conducted to check short- and long-run dynamics in the relationships. Empirical results are that TECH and SI are important in TP at all quantiles, but with stronger effects for lower-performing countries. Environmental quality (EQ) and GDP per capita (GDPPC) exert increasing impacts at upper quantiles, suggesting their importance in sustaining high-level tourism economies. ER effects are limited and primarily short-term. The findings highlight the need for integrated digital, environmental, and economic policies to achieve sustainable tourism development. The paper contributes to tourism research by providing a comprehensive, frequency-sensitive, and distributional analysis of macroeconomic determinants of tourism in highly developed European tourist destinations. This article investigates the role of space in the fiction of Jeffrey Eugenides, focusing on The Virgin Suicides (1993) and Middlesex (2002) through the lens of spatial theory. Drawing on key thinkers such as Henri Lefebvre, Michel Foucault, Edward Soja, Yi-Fu Tuan, and Doreen Massey, the study explores how Eugenides constructs spatial environments that not only frame but actively shape the identities, desires, and traumas of his characters. In The Virgin Suicides, suburban domestic spaces are shown to function as heterotopias—sites of surveillance, repression, and mythologized femininity—while Middlesex engages with transnational and urban spaces to narrate diasporic and intersex identity as dynamic, embodied, and liminal. The analysis reveals that Eugenides uses space as both a narrative device and a thematic concern to interrogate gender, memory, and power. Rather than passive backdrops, the novelistic spaces become charged arenas of conflict and transformation, reflecting and resisting dominant socio-cultural discourses. This study argues that space in Eugenides’ fiction operates as a critical register for understanding the politics of belonging and the production of subjectivity. By situating Eugenides within the broader field of literary spatiality, this article contributes to contemporary debates in literary geography, gender studies, and American fiction. Full article

Aggressiveness in dogs is a complex behavioral trait with implications for animal welfare and public safety. Despite domestication, dogs retain aggressive tendencies shaped by both genetic and environmental factors. This systematic review synthesizes the literature from 2000 to 2024 on the genetic and environmental bases of canine aggression. Using PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 144 articles were retrieved from Scopus and PubMed and screened in two phases, resulting in 33 studies selected for analysis. These were evaluated using a 20-question grid across seven categories, including phenotyping, genetic analysis, population structure, and future directions. The studies support a polygenic model of aggressiveness, with associations reported for genes involved in neurotransmission, hormone signaling, and brain function. However, inconsistencies in phenotyping, small sample sizes, and a limited consideration of environmental factors hinder robust conclusions. Most studies focused on popular companion breeds, while those commonly labeled as aggressive were underrepresented. The findings highlight the relevance of gene–environment interactions but underscore that aggression is often poorly defined and measured across studies. Future research should prioritize standardized phenotyping tools, broader breed inclusion, and the functional validation of genetic findings. These efforts will improve the understanding of dog aggression and inform breeding, behavioral assessment, and public policy. Full article

While IPV is often studied as a predictor of housing insecurity, few U.S. studies explore how different forms of housing instability may contribute to intimate partner violence (IPV) risk. Using a mixed-methods approach and a cross-sectional design, this study examined the association between four housing instability domains and IPV among a sample of tenants that had either experienced eviction or were at high risk for eviction. Tenants in Harris and Travis counties (Texas, USA) completed an online survey (n = 1085; March–July 2024). Housing instability was assessed across four domains: homelessness, lease violations, utility hardship, and poor housing quality. IPV was measured using the Hurt, Insult, Threaten, Scream Screener. Covariate-adjusted logistic regression models suggest indicators within the four housing instability domains were associated with IPV risk. Within the homelessness domain, experiences with lifetime homelessness (AOR = 1.92, 95%CI 1.61–2.28), in the past 12 months living in unconventional spaces (AOR = 2.10, 95%CI 1.92–2.29), and moving in with others (AOR = 1.20, 95%CI 1.06–1.36) were associated with IPV. Within the lease violations domain, missed rent payments (AOR = 1.69, 95%CI 1.68–1.71) and non-payment lease violations (AOR = 2.50, 95%CI 2.29–2.73) in the past 12 months were associated with IPV. Utility shutoffs (AOR = 1.62, 95%CI 1.37–1.91) and unsafe housing (AOR = 1.65, 95%CI 1.31–2.09) in the past 12 months were associated with IPV. Homelessness, housing-related economic hardships and substandard living conditions predict an elevated risk of IPV. Full article

This review examines advancements in smart home security through the integration of home automation technologies. Various security systems, including surveillance cameras, smart locks, and motion sensors, are analyzed, highlighting their effectiveness in enhancing home security. These systems enable users to monitor and control their homes in real-time, providing an additional layer of security. The document also examines how these security systems can enhance the quality of life for users by providing greater convenience and control over their domestic environment. Canine morbillivirus (CDV), the cause of canine distemper, is a pathogen affecting many hosts. While modified live virus (MLV) vaccines are crucial for controlling the disease in dogs, cases of vaccine-related infections have been found in both domestic and wild animals. Specifically, the America-1 and Rockborn-like vaccine genotypes are concerning due to their spread and ability to transmit between different species. This study conducted a review and analysis of molecular detections of these strains in various carnivores (domestic, captive, synanthropic, and wild species). This study used a conceptual model considering host ecology and the domestic–wild interface to evaluate plausible transmission connections over time using Linear Directional Mean (LDM) and Weighted Mean Centre (WMC) methods. Statistical analyses examined the relationship between how likely a strain is to spread and factors like host type and vaccination status. The findings showed that the America-1 genotype spread in a more organised way, with domestic dogs being the main source and recipient, bridging different environments. Synanthropic mesocarnivores also played this same role, with less intensity. America-1 was most concentrated in the North Atlantic and Western Europe. In contrast, the Rockborn-like strain showed a more unpredictable and restricted spread, residual circulation from past use rather than ongoing spread. Species involved in vaccine-related infections often share characteristics like generalist behaviour, social living, and a preference for areas where domestic animals and wildlife interact. We did not find a general link between a host vaccination status and the likelihood of the strain spreading. The study emphasised the ongoing risk of vaccine-derived strains moving from domestic and synanthropic animals to vulnerable wild species, supporting the need for improved vaccination approaches. Mapping these plausible transmission routes can serve as a basis for targeted surveillance, not only of vaccine-derived strains, but of any other circulating genotype. Full article

Corn smut, caused by Ustilago maydis, significantly threatens maize production. This study evaluated 199 maize inbred lines at the seedling stage under greenhouse conditions for resistance to U. maydis, identifying 39 highly resistant lines. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) using the mrMLM model detected 19 significant single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci. Based on a linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay distance of 260 kb, 226 candidate genes were identified. Utilizing the significant loci chr1_244281660 and chr5_220156746, two kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) markers were successfully developed. A PCR-based sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe hybridization technique applied to the 199 experimental lines and 60 validation lines confirmed polymorphism for both markers, with selection efficiencies of 48.12% and 43.33%, respectively. The tested materials were derived from foundational inbred lines of domestic and foreign origin. Analysis of 39 highly resistant lines showed that the advantageous alleles carrying thymine/cytosine (T/C) predominated at frequencies of 94.87% and 53.84%, respectively. The genotype TTCC conferred high resistance, while CCTT was highly susceptible. The resistance exhibited high heritability and significant gene-by-environment interaction. This work systematically dissects the genetic basis of common smut resistance in maize, identifies favorable alleles, and provides a novel KASP marker-based strategy for developing disease-resistant germplasm. The COVID-19 pandemic’s rapid shift to working from home has fundamentally challenged residential acoustic design, which traditionally prioritises rest and relaxation rather than sustained concentration. However, a clear gap exists in understanding how acoustic needs and the subjective evaluation of soundscape appropriateness (SA) differ between these conflicting activities within the same domestic space. Addressing this gap, this study reveals critical differences in how people experience and evaluate home soundscapes during work versus relaxation activities in the same residential spaces. Through an online survey of 247 Chinese participants during lockdown, we assessed soundscape perception attributes, the perceived saliencies of various sound types, and soundscape appropriateness (SA) ratings while working and relaxing at home. Our findings demonstrate that working at home creates a more demanding acoustic context: participants perceived indoor soundscapes as significantly less comfortable and less full of content when working compared to relaxing (p < 0.001), with natural sounds becoming less noticeable (−13.3%) and distracting household sounds more prominent (+7.5%). Structural equation modelling revealed distinct influence mechanisms: while comfort significantly mediates SA enhancement in both activities, the effect is stronger during relaxation (R2 = 0.18). Critically, outdoor man-made noise, building-service noise, and neighbour sounds all negatively impact SA during work, with neighbour sounds showing the largest detrimental effect (total effect size = −0.17), whereas only neighbour sounds and outdoor man-made noise significantly disrupt relaxation activities. Additionally, natural sounds act as a positive factor during relaxation. These results expose a fundamental mismatch: existing residential acoustic environments, designed primarily for rest, fail to support the cognitive demands of work activities. This study provides evidence-based insights for acoustic design interventions, emphasising the need for activity-specific soundscape considerations in residential spaces. As hybrid work arrangements become the norm post-pandemic, our findings highlight the urgency of reimagining residential acoustic design to accommodate both focused work and restorative relaxation within the same home. Plant-essential phosphorus (P) is a sparingly available mineral in soils. Phosphorus fertilizers—produced by the transformation of insoluble to soluble phosphates—are thus applied to agroecosystems. With advancements in commercial agriculture, crops have been increasingly adapted to grow in fertile environments. Wild crop relatives, however, are adapted to grow in unfertilized soils. In response to these two conditions of P bioavailability (fertilized agroecosystems and unfertilized natural soils), domesticated crops and wild species employ different strategies to grow and develop. It is essential to understand strategies related to P acquisition that may have been lost to domestication, and here we present, for the first time, that across species, modern cultivars engage in physical (i.e., root morphological) mechanisms while their wild relatives promote ecological (i.e., root-microbial) mechanisms. Domesticated crops showcase shallower root system architecture and engage in topsoil foraging to acquire P from the nutrient-stratified environments common to fertilized agroecosystems. Wild species associate with P-cycling bacteria and AM fungi. This divergence in P recovery strategies is a novel delineation of current research that has implications for enhancing agricultural sustainability. By identifying the traits related to P recovery that have been lost to domestication, we can strengthen the P recovery responses by modern crops and reduce P fertilization. Full article

In this paper, we propose an active touch sensing algorithm designed for robust hole localization in 3D objects, specifically aimed at assembly tasks such as peg-in-hole operations. Unlike general object detection algorithms, our solution is tailored for precise localization of features like hole openings using sparse tactile feedback. The method builds on a prior 3D map of the object and employs a series of iterative search algorithms to refine localization by aligning tactile sensing data with the object’s shape. It is specifically designed for objects composed of multiple parallel surfaces located at distinct heights; a common characteristic in many assembly tasks. In addition to the deterministic approach, we introduce a probabilistic version of the algorithm, which effectively compensates for sensor noise and inaccuracies in the 3D map. This probabilistic framework significantly improves the algorithm’s resilience in real-world environments, ensuring reliable performance even under imperfect conditions. We validate the method’s effectiveness for several assembly tasks, such as inserting a plug into a socket, demonstrating its speed and accuracy. The proposed algorithm outperforms traditional search strategies, offering a robust solution for assembly operations in industrial and domestic applications with limited sensory input. Full article

Aquatic plants, as sedentary lifestyle organisms that accumulate chemical substances from their surroundings, can serve as valuable indicators of long-term anthropogenic pressure. In Poland, water monitoring is limited both spatially and temporally, which hampers a comprehensive assessment of water quality. Since the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), biotic elements, including macrophytes, have played an increasingly important role in water monitoring. Moreover, running waters, due to their dynamic nature, are susceptible to episodic pollution inputs that may be difficult to detect during isolated, point-in-time sampling campaigns. The analysis of stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope signatures in macrophytes enables the identification of elemental sources, including potential pollutants. Research conducted between 2008 and 2011 encompassed 38 sites along 15 rivers and 108 sites across 21 lakes in northern Poland. This study focused on the isotope signatures of three pondweed species: Stuckenia pectinata, Potamogeton perfoliatus, and Potamogeton crispus. The results revealed statistically significant differences in the δ13C and δ15N values of plant organic matter between river and lake environments. Higher δ15N values were observed in rivers, whereas higher δ13C values were recorded in lakes. Spearman correlation analysis showed a negative relationship between δ13C and δ15N, as well as correlations between δ15N and the concentrations of Ca2+ and HCO3. A positive correlation was also found between δ13C and dissolved oxygen levels. These findings confirm the utility of δ13C and, in particular, δ15N as indicators of anthropogenic eutrophication, including potentially domestic sewage input and its impact on aquatic ecosystems. Promoting domestic fire safety is crucial for preventing and effectively managing risky situations. This study evaluated the effectiveness of virtual environments (VEs) in fire drills to improve citizens’ knowledge and safe behavior in domestic settings. Conducted at the Citizen School for Risk Prevention (CSRP) in Zaragoza (Spain), the experiment involved 20 participants facing a simulated kitchen fire using a combination of physical and virtual extinguishing equipment. A theoretical session accompanied the drills to reinforce learning. Participants were divided into two groups: one completed the drill before and after the theoretical session, while the other completed it only afterward. Performance was assessed based on the ability to extinguish, control, or lose control of the fire. Surveys administered before, immediately after, and three months after training measured knowledge retention and behavioral changes. The results indicate a significant improvement in fire safety awareness and lasting adoption of safe practices. Participants also emerged as safety advocates. This study aimed to investigate the concentrations of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, ortho-xylene (o-), and meta and para-xylene (m-,p-)) in Croatian households between December 2023 and January 2025. The results showed that BTEX concentrations were higher indoors than outdoors, suggesting a considerable contribution from indoor sources. Significant statistical differences were found between indoor and outdoor levels of ethylbenzene, m-,p-xylene, and o-xylene, especially during cold periods when indoor activities increase and ventilation decreases. Spearman’s correlation analysis showed weak correlations between benzene and other BTEX compounds, implying multiple distinct sources such as cooking, smoking, and outdoor air infiltration. EUDR Compliance in Ghana’s Natural Rubber Sector and Its Implications for Smallholders

The enforcement of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) may reduce the supply of natural rubber to the European Union (EU), potentially leading to price increases due to the inelastic nature of rubber demand. This study assesses the potential financial implications for smallholder producers in Ghana, considering both the opportunities and risks associated with the evolving regulatory environment under EUDR and local market access conditions. A cost–benefit analysis (CBA) was conducted to evaluate the impact of different EUDR-related export decline scenarios on the net present value (NPV) of a standard 4-hectare plantation. The results suggest that even a minor 2.5% decline in global exports to the EU could increase the NPV by 17% for an independent compliant producer. However, a simulated COVID-19-like crisis in the fifth year of production leads to a 20% decline in NPV, reflecting vulnerability to external shocks. Based on these findings, the study identifies two priorities. This first is improving the coordination and harmonization of compliance efforts across the value chain to enable more producers to benefit from potential EUDR-related price increases. The recent creation of the Association of Natural Rubber Actors of Ghana (ANRAG) presents an opportunity to support such collective mechanisms. Second, minimizing losses during demand shocks requires the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) to establish clear rules and transparent reporting for authorizing unprocessed rubber exports when factories reduce purchases due to low international prices—thus preserving market access for vulnerable producers. Together, these approaches would ensure that the potential benefits of the EUDR are realized inclusively, remain stable despite market downturns, and do not undermine value addition in domestic processing factories. Preparation and Application of Wetland-Plant-Derived Biochar for Tetracycline Antibiotic Adsorption in Water

Every year, a large amount of antibiotics enter aquatic environments globally through discharging of pharmaceutical wastewater and domestic sewage, emissions from agriculture, and livestock, posing a severe threat to ecosystems and human health. Therefore, it is essential to develop efficient adsorption materials for rapid removal of antibiotics in water. In this study, abundant and renewable wetland plants (lotus leaves, Arundo donax, and canna lilies) were utilized as raw materials to prepare biochar through slow pyrolysis combined with KOH chemical activation. The prepared biochar was employed to adsorb typical tetracycline (TC) antibiotics (TC-HCl, CTC-HCl, OTC-HCl) from water. The results showed that the optimum biochar (LBC-600 (1:3)) was prepared at a pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C with the mass ratio of KOH to lotus leaf of 1:3. The optimum pH for the adsorption of the three antibiotics were 5, 4, and 3, respectively. The highest adsorption rates reached 93.32%, 81.44%, and 83.76% for TC-HCl, CTC-HCl, and OTC-HCl with 0.6 g/L of biochar, respectively. At an initial antibiotic concentration of 80 mg·L−1, the maximum adsorption capacities achieved 40.17, 27.76, and 24.6 mg·g−1 for TC-HCl, CTC-HCl, and OTC-HCl, respectively. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating that it was a spontaneous endothermic process and primarily involved monolayer chemical adsorption. This study transformed wetland plant waste into adsorbent and applied it for antibiotic removal, providing a valuable resource utilization strategy and technical support for recycling wetland plant residues and antibiotic removal from water environments.
