Background/Objectives: Recent research highlights Vitis vinifera seeds as a rich source of bioactive proanthocyanidins (PACs) with antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects. Poorly absorbed PACs are metabolized by gut microbiota into active phenolic metabolites. This pilot study in ulcerative colitis patients assessed grape seed extract effects on microbiota, zonulin-related permeability, and quality of life. Methods: This prospective pilot study, conducted at the University Hospital of Padua, evaluated the effects of an eight-week treatment with proanthocyanidins (ECOVITIS®) on gut microbiota, intestinal permeability (zonulin), and well-being in patients with ulcerative colitis in remission (IBDQ). Fecal and serum samples were collected at T0 and T1. Microbiota analysis was performed through 16S rRNA gene sequencing (QIIME2), zonulin was quantified using an ELISA kit for pre-haptoglobin gene2 (pre-HP2), and HP1/HP2 genotyping was conducted by quantitative PCR. Statistical analyses (Wilcoxon, ALDEx2, PERMANOVA) assessed microbial diversity and taxonomic changes between pre- and post-treatment samples. Results: Twenty-five ulcerative colitis patients completed the study. IBDQ scores significantly improved after treatment (mean Δ = +11.2, p < 0.001), especially in the 11 best IBDQ responders (Δ = +24.2, p < 0.001). Microbiota analysis showed increased Lachnospiraceae and Sutterellaceae in responders, while overall diversity remained unchanged. Zonulin levels were unaffected. Conclusions: PAC treatment improved quality of life in ulcerative colitis patients, as shown by increased IBDQ scores. Serum zonulin levels remained unchanged. Microbiota analysis revealed enrichment of Lachnospiraceae and Sutterellaceae families, suggesting beneficial modulation. Limitations include lack of metabolic assessment and a control group, and caution is needed in interpreting zonulin measurements. Full article

In southwest China, vegetation restoration is widely used in karst rocky desertification control projects. However, mechanistic evidence explaining how plant community composition and species diversity regulate cadmium (Cd) bioavailability remains limited. Here, the plant community’s species diversity, soil properties, Cd, and available Cd contents were evaluated. Four plant community types, NR (natural recovery), PMC (Pistacia weinmannifolia + Medicago sativa + Chrysopogon zizanioides), and PME (Pistacia weinmannifolia + Medicago sativa + Eragrostis curvula), were selected as the research objects. The species composition was recorded, and dominant plant species and soil samples were collected to analyze Cd accumulation characteristics. Relative to NR, composite restorations increased plant diversity and soil nutrient availability and reduced soil compaction, with PMC showing the strongest remediation, decreasing total Cd by 49.4% and available Cd by 59.5%. Model-averaged regression and hierarchical partitioning analyses further identified nitrogen availability and community structure as the dominant drivers. Specifically, available nitrogen (AN), vegetation coverage, Margalef species richness (DMG), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+–N), and total N (TN) were the main factors of soil total Cd, and BD, TN, nitrate nitrogen (NO3–N), mean crown diameter (MCD), and Shannon–Wiener index (H′) were the main factors of soil available Cd. The results indicate that PMC provides a plant community structure configuration decisions of a scalable, site-adaptable strategy for durable Cd stabilization and soil conservation in thin, carbonate-rich karst soils. Understanding mechanisms of asphalt in the process of natural aging is crucial for predicting its long-term durability and optimizing performance under diverse environmental conditions. Despite its importance, the microstructural and micromechanical changes induced by natural aging remain poorly understood, particularly under varying climatic influences. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the effects of natural aging on asphalt’s microscopic properties and identifying key indicators that govern its degradation. Asphalt samples were subjected to natural aging across five climatically distinct regions over 6, 12, and 18 months. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to characterize surface roughness, adhesion forces, and DMT modulus, while correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to identify relationships among micromechanical indicators and streamline the dataset. The results reveal that natural aging induces irreversible transformations in asphalt’s microstructure, driven by the combined effects of temperature, UV radiation, humidity, and oxygen. These processes promote the evolution of “Bee structures,” increase surface roughness, and accelerate phase separation, alongside chemical modifications such as oxidation and polymerization, leading to progressive material hardening and stiffness. Significant regional and temporal variations in adhesion forces and DMT modulus were observed, reflecting the cumulative impact of environmental factors on asphalt’s aging dynamics. Correlation analysis demonstrated strong associations between surface roughness and “Bee structure” area, while mechanical properties such as stiffness and adhesion were largely decoupled from morphological features. Environmental factors interact in complex ways to drive asphalt aging. Humidity enhances adhesion and stiffness via water-induced capillary forces, while temperature reduces surface roughness and adhesion through molecular reorganization. UV radiation accelerates oxidative degradation, promoting surface erosion and stiffness loss, while altitude modulates these dynamics by influencing temperature and UV exposure. Full article

In temperate freshwater ecosystems, zooplankton play a crucial role in the pelagic food web and act as sensitive indicators of environmental change. They respond to shifts in water temperature, hydrodynamic mixing, and short-term meteorological events. This study investigated the epilimnetic zooplankton fauna of Lake Karamurat (Bolu, Türkiye), a small tectonic temperate lake, with a specific focus on the influence of rainfall events and wind speed on community structure. The samples were taken seasonally and horizontally using a plankton net (55 µm mesh size) and were analyzed alongside in situ physico-chemical measurements and meteorological data. In total, 74 zooplankton taxa were identified, comprising 54 rotifer species and 20 crustacean species (16 Cladocera and 4 Copepoda). Testudinella greeni was recorded for the first time in Türkiye, representing a new addition to the Turkish Rotifera fauna. Multivariate analyses revealed that electrical conductivity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, precipitation, and wind speed were key drivers shaping community composition. The findings suggest that wind-driven surface mixing and episodic rainfall events enhanced vertical redistribution, leading to dominance of rotifers and small-bodied cladocerans in the epilimnion. These findings underscore the critical role of sampling strategy in shallow lakes under dynamic conditions and provide new faunistic insights into the zooplankton diversity of Anatolian lakes. Gut microbiota is a potential therapeutic target for type 2 diabetes (T2D), but its role remains unclear. Investigating causal associations between them could further our understanding of their biological and clinical significance. A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted to assess the causal relationship between gut microbiota and T2D. Key genes and mechanisms were identified through the integration of Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) and cis-expression quantitative trait loci (cis-eQTL) data. Network pharmacology was applied to identify potential drugs and targets. Additionally, gut microbiota community analysis and machine learning models were used to construct a diagnostic model for T2D. MR analysis identified 17 gut microbiota taxa associated with T2D, with three showing significant associations: Actinomyces (odds ratio [OR] = 1.106; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.06–1.15; p < 0.01; adjusted p-value [padj] = 0.0003), Ruminococcaceae (UCG010 group) (OR = 0.897; 95% CI: 0.85–0.95; p < 0.01; padj = 0.018), and Deltaproteobacteria (OR = 1.072; 95% CI: 1.03–1.12; p < 0.01; padj = 0.029). Ten key genes, such as EXOC4 and IGF1R, were linked to T2D risk. Network pharmacology identified INSR and ESR1 as target driver genes, with drugs like Dienestrol showing promise. Gut microbiota analysis revealed reduced α-diversity in T2D patients (p < 0.05), and β-diversity showed microbial community differences (R2 = 0.012, p = 0.001). Furthermore, molecular docking confirmed the binding affinity of potential therapeutic agents to their targets. Finally, we developed a class-weight optimized Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) diagnostic model, which achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.84 with balanced sensitivity (95.1%) and specificity (83.8%). Integrating machine learning predictions with MR causal inference highlighted Bacteroides as a key biomarker. Our findings elucidate the gut microbiota-T2D causal axis, identify therapeutic targets, and provide a robust tool for precision diagnosis. Full article

The Dartmoor Estate Tea plantation in Devon, UK, benefits from a unique microclimate and diverse soil conditions, which, together with its different processing methods, contribute to the distinctive flavours and chemical profiles of its teas. Objectives: The chemical diversity of Dartmoor tea was assessed via samples collected during processing of green and black tea. Methods: Leaf samples were collected during the processing of green and black tea and analysed using Flow Infusion Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (FIE-MS). Results: For green tea processing, random forest regression identified features associated with the processing steps, resulting in a total of 272 m/z explanatory features. The analysis of black tea processing (4 h and overnight oxidation prior to roasting) yielded 209 discriminatory m/z features (4 h) and the model for the overnight oxidation and roasting treatments yielded 605 discriminatory m/z features. K-means clustering was performed on the percentage of relative abundance of the discriminatory m/z features. This grouped the discriminatory m/z features into 15 clusters of features showing similar trends across the processing stages. Functional and structural enrichment analysis was performed on each of the clusters and significant metabolic pathways included metabolism and biosynthesis of flavonoids, amino acids and lipids, the Pentose phosphate pathway, and the TCA cycle. Many discriminatory features were putatively classified as catechin-derived flavan-3-ols and flavonol glycosides. Conclusions: This research highlights the complex role that processing plays in shaping tea quality. It provides valuable insights into the metabolic pathways that influence tea production and emphasises how these factors determine the final chemical profile and sensory characteristics of tea. Accurate prediction of ultimate tensile strength (UTS) is central to the design and optimization of heat-treated steels but is traditionally achieved through costly and iterative experimental trials. This study presents a transparent, physics-aware machine learning (ML) framework for predicting UTS using an open-access steel database. A curated dataset of 1255 steel samples was constructed by combining 18 chemical composition variables with 7 processing descriptors extracted from free-text heat-treatment records and filtering them using physically justified consistency criteria. To avoid information leakage arising from repeated measurements, model development and evaluation were conducted under a group-aware validation framework based on thermomechanical states. A Random Forest (RF) regression model achieved robust, conservative test-set performance (R2 ≈ 0.90, MAE ≈ 40 MPa), with unbiased residuals and realistic generalization across diverse composition–processing conditions. Performance robustness was further examined using repeated group-aware resampling and strength-stratified error analysis, highlighting increased uncertainty in sparsely populated high-strength regimes. Model interpretability was assessed using SHAP-based feature importance and partial dependence analysis, revealing that UTS is primarily governed by the overall alloying level, carbon content, and processing parameters controlling transformation kinetics, particularly bar diameter and tempering temperature. The results demonstrate that reliable predictions and physically meaningful insights can be obtained from publicly available data using a conservative, reproducible machine-learning workflow. Background and Objectives: Early recognition of life-threatening organ dysfunction is central to modern sepsis frameworks. We systematically reviewed the prognostic performance and clinical utility of the Neonatal Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (nSOFA) for mortality and major morbidity in NICU populations. The search identified 939 records across databases; after screening and full-text assessment, 16 studies met the inclusion criteria. Methods: Following PRISMA guidance, we searched major databases (2019–2025) for observational or interventional studies reporting discrimination or risk stratification using nSOFA in neonates. Populations included suspected/proven infection and condition-specific cohorts. Heterogeneity in timing, thresholds, and outcomes precluded meta-analysis. Results: A cumulative sample exceeding 25,000 neonates was identified across late- and early-onset infection, all-NICU admissions, necrotizing enterocolitis, respiratory distress, and very preterm screening cohorts. Across settings and timepoints, nSOFA demonstrated consistent, good-to-excellent mortality discrimination, with reported AUROCs ≥ 0.80 and upper ranges near 0.90–0.92; serial scoring within the first 6–12 h generally improved risk classification. Disease-specific applications (NEC, early-onset infection) showed similar discrimination for death or composite adverse outcomes. Conclusions: Evidence from diverse NICU contexts indicates that nSOFA is a pragmatic, EHR-ready organ dysfunction score with robust discrimination for mortality and serious morbidity, supporting routine, serial use for risk stratification and standardized endpoints in neonatal sepsis pathways, aligned with contemporary organ dysfunction–based pediatric criteria. Listeria monocytogenes is a high-risk pathogenic bacterium associated with ready-to-eat foods and poses a potential threat to consumer health. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, characterization and genetic diversity of L. monocytogenes in ready-to-eat raw salmon and trout products obtained from physical stores and online stores in China. Out of 150 samples analyzed, 23 (15.3%) were positive for L. monocytogenes. Among these positive samples, three (12%) were from Japanese restaurants, four (16%) from farmers markets, one (2.9%) from large supermarkets and fifteen (30%) from e-commerce platforms, and only one sample showed a contamination level exceeding 100 most probable number (MPN)/g. The isolates from positive samples demonstrated a concrete public health risk through several findings: twenty-three L. monocytogenes exhibited varying degrees of cytotoxicity, ranging from 7.6% to 71.8%. Compared with the reference strain ATCC 19115, five of these isolates were highly cytotoxic, a result that was validated by mouse survival rate experiment, which also confirmed their high virulence at tested dose. All isolates were resistant to cefuroxime sodium, ceftriaxone, cefepime and nalidixic acid, and 13% showed resistance to sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Three serogroups were identified, with serogroup Ⅰ.1 (1/2a, 3a) being the most prevalent (65.2%). These isolates were grouped into eight sequence types, with ST8 (34.8%) and ST87 (30.4%) dominating. All isolates carried virulence genes associated with LIPI-1 andmultiple internalin genes (inlA, inlB, inlJ and inlK), confirming their potential pathogenicity. Additionally, the isolates harbored antimicrobial resistance genes lin and FosX. The five highly virulent isolates exhibited the highest genetic similarity to J2-031 (GCA_000438645.1) and C1-387 (GCA_000438605.1). The results provided valuable information for Chinese regulatory authorities to strengthen the risk monitoring of L. monocytogenes in ready-to-eat raw salmon and trout products. Full article

Roses held profound cultural and economic significance in ancient Greece and Rome, yet comprehensive documentation of their species diversity, cultivation practices, and horticultural innovations remains fragmented across archaeological, iconographic, and textual sources. This multidisciplinary study synthesizes evidence from classical texts, archaeological remains including recently identified rose stem fragments from Oplontis, and iconographic materials—including frescoes, coins, and mosaics—to reconstruct the horticultural systems and cultural landscape of roses in classical antiquity. Analysis of literary sources, particularly Theophrastus’s fourth-century BCE taxonomic descriptions, reveals systematic cultivation of diverse rose varieties with flowers ranging from white to deep crimson, including yellow variants, characterized by morphologies from simple to double forms and valued for fragrance intensity and re-blooming capacity. Archaeological evidence from sites such as Paestum, Pompeii, and Oplontis, including pollen samples, preserved wood fragments with diagnostic prickle patterns, and fresco representations, documents commercial rose production and specialized cultivation techniques that demonstrate significantly greater morphological diversity than textual sources alone indicate. Field research and collection documentation establish the origins of Mediterranean rose cultivation, while iconographic analysis identifies roses in religious ceremonies, festivals, and daily life contexts. Textual sources provide detailed propagation methods, seasonal management practices, and evidence of Mediterranean hybridization events, alongside extensive documentation of medicinal and cosmetic applications. Economic analysis reveals specialized trade networks, commercial production centers, and diverse applications in perfumery, garland making, and pharmaceutical industries. This research establishes that Greek and Roman civilizations developed sophisticated rose cultivation systems integrating botanical selection, horticultural innovation, and cultural symbolism that directly influenced medieval and Renaissance practices and informed modern trait categorization systems. These findings demonstrate the foundational role of classical antiquity in European rose heritage, revealing how ancient horticultural knowledge, species diversification through hybridization, and cultivation techniques created an unbroken transmission that shaped contemporary rose industries and established conservation priorities for this horticultural heritage. This study examines the relationship between publicly traded Thai companies’ ESG performance and value as well as how board structures moderate this. In the Thai context, there is a limited number of empirical studies that employ the board of directors’ structure as a moderating variable, despite the importance of the board’s role in corporate management. This study aims to address this research gap. A panel GMM regression model is employed to address endogeneity issues, and our sample consists of 94 Thai listed companies with available ESG data from 2019 to 2023, resulting in 470 firm-year observations. The results demonstrate positive direct impact of ESG score on corporate value. In addition, board independence is positively significant and relates to company value. However, this research found negative moderating effect of board independence on the relationship between ESG score and corporate value. Furthermore, the empirical results indicate that board size does not have a significant direct and moderate impact on corporate value. Moreover, firm size and leverage are not related to corporate value. The results confirm the agency theory and stakeholder theory. Based on the findings, company executives should integrate ESG practices into their strategic plans. Moreover, regulatory authorities should promote expertise diversity and independence within the board and promote ESG standards and disclosure, as well as offer tax incentives for companies with outstanding ESG. This would enable investors to consider ESG performance in their decision-making. This study represents a new contribution to literature, especially in the context of emerging markets. Full article

Słowiński National Park is one of the 23 national parks in Poland and one of the two situated on the Baltic Coast in the country. It was established in 1967 to protect the most valuable ecosystems: coastal lakes, marshes, peat bogs, meadows, forests, and, above all, the dune belt of the Łebska Spit with its unique moving dunes. We aimed to 1. determine the species diversity and structure of thrips assemblages in the most important biotopes of the Park; 2. determine the geographical distribution and food preferences of thrips species; and 3. determine which environmental factors influence the diversity of insect assemblages and which thrips species distinguish these assemblages. The method used in the quantitative research was based on the use of a scoop method; it was supplemented by qualitative research (shaking branches of trees and searching for insects on their host plants). The studies were carried out in 1991 and 1999–2001 in fourteen plant associations. A total of 90 thrips species (nearly 40% of the Polish fauna) were recorded, including 71 in quantitative and 74 in qualitative samples. The study also revealed a significant correlation between the thrips assemblage composition and the following environmental factors: soil moisture, light intensity, general nutrient availability, and soil salinity. In addition, the thrips species with the most significant impact on assemblage composition were identified. The relatively high number of species found, including Taeniothrips zurstrassenii Zawirska, a species new to science, and others rarely recorded in Poland, highlights the value of the SNP habitat diversity in maintaining high Thysanoptera diversity. Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients frequently experience alterations in the oral environment following radiotherapy, including xerostomia and impaired mucosal integrity, which may favour fungal overgrowth. This study aimed to characterise oral Candida colonisation in radiotherapy-treated HNC patients and compare it with that of healthy individuals. Unstimulated saliva samples from 61 HNC patients and 100 controls were cultured on chromogenic agar, and isolates were identified using API 20C AUX or MALDI-TOF. Salivary flow was measured to quantify xerostomia. A representative subset of isolates (10 per group) underwent antifungal susceptibility testing by disk diffusion according to CLSI/EUCAST criteria. Candida colonisation was significantly higher in HNC patients than in controls (64.6% vs. 20%, p < 0.001), with greater species diversity and increased detection of non-albicans yeasts, including C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, and C. krusei. All HNC patients exhibited reduced salivary flow. Azole resistance was more frequent among HNC isolates (26%) than among controls (10%), whereas all isolates remained susceptible to amphotericin B and nystatin. These findings indicate that radiotherapy-associated xerostomia substantially alters the oral mycobiota and underscore the importance of routine species-level identification and antifungal susceptibility testing in HNC patients to guide clinical decision-making. It is imperative to continuously monitor public awareness, attitudes, and environmental actions to adjust policy to promote and support transition processes given the ongoing phenomenon of climate change. Insights into poorly investigated domains, such as rural areas, are particularly valuable in this context. Responding to this challenge, we aimed to diagnose the efforts in which individuals engage for the benefit of their local communities in rural areas of a selected region of Poland (Małopolskie Voivodeship) in the context of climate change and the energy transition. The study concerns a specific region, one with the most intensive deployment of climate and energy policy in Poland. It is also highly diversified in terms of the environment and population, from the densely urbanised Kraków Metropolitan Area to scattered rural areas where institutional resources are scarce. This diversity affects how local populations engage in climate and energy efforts. The study involves a literature review and an original 2024 survey among 300 people from five rural districts of Małopolskie Voivodeship selected to reflect the region’s diversity. The CAPI (Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing) survey sample was built with chain referral. The in-depth analyses were performed in IBM SPSS, v.25. We employed statistical analyses, including one-way ANOVA to assess between-group variance, χ2 tests, Sidak tests, and Fisher’s tests. The results show that most respondents recognised an association between energy and climate, but the awareness is fragmented and varied. These conclusions call for amplifying environmental awareness, particularly regarding energy transition. We have also confirmed a significant spatial diversification of environmental attitudes and practices among the public regarding the energy transition. It has been confirmed by all indicators, from the state of the environment to the perceived agency to the structure of home heating systems. Additionally, the importance of local governments in pro-climate activities was indicated. This is particularly important in the context of the ‘Anti-smog resolution for Małopolska’, which has been in force in the Małopolska Province since 2019 and plays a leading role in climate policy in the region. What is particularly important is that the vast majority of respondents from all districts declared their support for these changes, for which local governments are responsible. Full article

Gut microbial communities perform a multitude of physiological functions for their hosts; however, the drivers and distribution patterns of microbiota in wild animals remain largely underexplored. Our understanding of how these microbial communities are structured across hosts in natural environments—especially within a single host species remains limited. Here, we characterized the gut microbial communities of four species of ocean fish using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing to investigate the structural and functional features of these microbial communities across different fish species. By comparing the gut microbiota compositions of blue sharks (Prionace glauca), bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus), sickle pomfret (Taractichthys steindachneri), and mackerel (Scomber japonicus), we identified several microbial taxa—including Photobacterium, Pelomonas, Ralstonia, and Rhodococcus—that were consistently detected across all samples, indicating they likely constitute a “common microbiota”. However, the relative abundances of these taxa varied significantly among species, with Photobacterium exhibiting the highest diversity. Blue sharks and bigeye tuna harbored relatively few dominant microbial species, but the abundance of these dominant bacteria was remarkably high, and inter-individual differences in microbial composition were pronounced. In contrast, mackerel and sickle pomfret contained a greater variety of dominant genera, each with low relative abundance, and inter-individual differences within the same species were minimal. Functionally, metabolic pathways, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and microbial metabolism represent the predominant functional categories of the intestinal microbiota in marine fish, with only minor interspecific differences observed. In contrast, biosynthesis of amino acids, ABC transporters, and two-component systems are the key functional pathways that exhibit significant variations across different fish species. Collectively, these findings reveal differences in gut microbial stability among different fish hosts. Such variations may be associated with the hosts’ energy utilization needs, and changes in the gut microbiota play a critical role in shaping the diverse survival strategies of these fish species.
