Croatian agricultural legislation acknowledges the significance of radionuclides as pollutants in agricultural lands; however, it lacks specific thresholds or reference values for contamination levels, in contrast to other contaminants. This absence highlights the necessity for a comprehensive assessment of radionuclides across various agricultural systems in Croatia. This study investigates the transfer of radionuclides 137Cs and 40K from soil to agricultural crops throughout Croatia and estimates the consequent annual ingestion dose for the population. The samples collected comprised food crops and animal feed, with corresponding soil samples analyzed to calculate transfer factors. Activity concentrations of 137Cs exhibited regional and crop-type variability, reflecting the uneven distribution of fallout and differing soil properties. Transfer factors were found to range from 0.003 to 0.06 for 137Cs and from 0.15 to 3.1 for 40K, with the highest uptake occurring in kidney beans. The total estimated annual effective ingestion dose was calculated to be a maximum of 0.748 mSv/year for children aged 2–7, predominantly attributable to 40K. Given the homeostatic regulation of potassium in the human body, the dose associated with 137Cs poses a more significant radiological concern. These findings underscore the need for radionuclide-specific agricultural legislation in Croatia and offer a baseline for recommending reference values and informing future regulations regarding agricultural soil contamination. Given the severe global traffic safety challenges—including threats to human lives and socioeconomic impacts—this study analyzes visual behavior to promote sustainable transportation, improve road safety, and reduce resource waste and pollution caused by accidents. Four typical road sections, namely, turning, straight ahead, uphill, and downhill, were selected, and the eye movement data of 23 drivers in different driving stages were collected by aSee Glasses eye-tracking device to analyze the visual gaze characteristics of the drivers and their transfer patterns in each road section. Using Markov chain theory, the probability of staying at each gaze point and the transfer probability distribution between gaze points were investigated. The results of the study showed that drivers’ visual behaviors in different road sections showed significant differences: drivers in the turning section had the largest percentage of fixation on the near front, with a fixation duration and frequency of 29.99% and 28.80%, respectively; the straight ahead section, on the other hand, mainly focused on the right side of the road, with 31.57% of fixation duration and 19.45% of frequency of fixation; on the uphill section, drivers’ fixation duration on the left and right roads was more balanced, with 24.36% of fixation duration on the left side of the road and 25.51% on the right side of the road; drivers on the downhill section looked more frequently at the distance ahead, with a total fixation frequency of 23.20%, while paying higher attention to the right side of the road environment, with a fixation duration of 27.09%. In terms of visual fixation, the fixation shift in the turning road section was mainly concentrated between the near and distant parts of the road ahead and frequently turned to the left and right sides; the straight road section mainly showed a shift between the distant parts of the road ahead and the dashboard; the uphill road section was concentrated on the shift between the near parts of the road ahead and the two sides of the road, while the downhill road section mainly occurred between the distant parts of the road ahead and the rearview mirror. Although drivers’ fixations on the front of the road were most concentrated under the four road sections, with an overall fixation stability probability exceeding 67%, there were significant differences in fixation smoothness between different road sections. Through this study, this paper not only reveals the laws of drivers’ visual behavior under different driving environments but also provides theoretical support for behavior-based traffic safety improvement strategies. Microplastic (MP) pollution is an emerging concern in ruminant production, as animals are exposed to MPs through air, water, and feeds. Ruminants play a key role in MP transmission to humans via animal products and contribute to MP return to agricultural soil through excreta. Identifying effective strategies to mitigate MP pollution in the ruminant sector is crucial. A promising yet understudied approach involves the potential ability of rumen microbiota to degrade MPs. This study investigated the in vitro ruminal degradation of three widely distributed MPs—low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyamide (PA)—over 24, 48, and 72 h. PET MP exhibited the highest degradation rates (24 h: 0.50 ± 0.070%; 48 h: 0.73 ± 0.057%; and 72 h: 0.96 ± 0.082%), followed by LDPE MP (24 h: 0.03 ± 0.020%; 48 h: 0.25 ± 0.053%; and 72 h: 0.56 ± 0.066%) and PA MP (24 h: 0.10 ± 0.045%; 48 h: 0.02 ± 0.015%; and 72 h: 0.14 ± 0.067%). These findings suggest that the ruminal environment could serve as a promising tool for LDPE, PET, and PA MPs degradation. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms involved, potentially enhancing ruminants’ natural capacity to degrade MPs. Full article

Boda boda motorbike taxis are a primary mode of transport in Nairobi, Kenya, and a major source of urban air pollution. This study investigates the environmental and electrical grid impacts of electrifying Nairobi’s boda boda fleet. Using real-world tracking data from 118 motorbikes, we simulated the effects of a full-scale transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric motorbikes. We analysed various scenarios, including different battery charging strategies (swapping and home charging), motor efficiencies, battery capacities, charging rates, and the potential for solar power offsetting. The results indicate that electrification could reduce daily CO2 emissions by approximately 85% and eliminate tailpipe particulate matter emissions. However, transitioning the entire country’s fleet would increase the national daily energy demand by up to 6.85 GWh and could introduce peak grid loads as high as 2.40 GW, depending on the charging approach and vehicle efficiency. Battery swapping was found to distribute the grid load more evenly and better complement solar power integration compared to home charging, which concentrates demand in the evening. This research provides a scalable, data-driven framework for policymakers to assess the impacts of transport electrification in similar urban contexts, highlighting the critical trade-offs between environmental benefits and grid infrastructure requirements. Urban air pollution remains a significant environmental and public health issue, especially in European coastal cities such as Klaipėda. However, there is still a lack of local-scale knowledge on how land use structure influences pollutant distribution, highlighting the need to address this gap. This study addresses this by examining the spatial distribution of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations in Klaipėda’s seaport city and several inland and coastal resort towns in Lithuania. The research specifically asks how different land cover types and demographic factors affect NO2 variability and population exposure risk. Data were collected using passive sampling methods and analyzed within a GIS environment. The results revealed clear air quality differences between industrial/port zones and greener resort areas, confirmed by statistically significant associations between land cover types and pollutant levels. Based on these findings, a Land Use Pollution Pressure index (LUPP) and its population-weighted variant (PLUPP) were developed to capture demographic sensitivity. These indices provide a practical decision-support tool for sustainable urban planning, enabling the assessment of pollution risks and the forecasting of air quality changes under different land use scenarios, while contributing to local climate adaptation and urban environmental governance. The contamination due to coastal landfill is a growing environmental concern, particularly in fragile marine ecosystems, where leachate can mobilize toxic elements into soil, water, air, and sediment. This study aims to assess the impact of a coastal landfill in Al-Qunfudhah, western Saudi Arabia, on nearby coastal sediments by identifying the concentration, distribution, and ecological risk of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) using geospatial and multivariate analysis tools. The results indicate significant accumulation of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Fe, with Pb reaching alarming levels of up to 1160 mg/kg in the landfill area, compared to 120 mg/kg in the coastal sediments. Zn contamination also exhibited substantial elevation, with values reaching 278 mg/kg in landfill soil and 157 mg/kg in coastal sediment. The enrichment factor values indicate moderate to severe enrichment for Pb (up to 73.20) and Zn (up to 6.91), confirming anthropogenic influence. The contamination factor analysis categorized Pb contamination as very high (CF > 6), suggesting significant ecological risk. Comparison with sediment quality guidelines suggest that Pb, Zn, and Cu concentrations exceeded threshold effect levels (TEL) in some samples, posing potential risks to marine organisms. The spatial distribution maps revealed pollutant migration from the landfill toward the coastal zone, emphasizing the necessity of monitoring and mitigation strategies. As the first comprehensive study on landfill-induced PTEs contamination in Al-Qunfudhah, these findings provide essential insights for environmental management and pollution control policies along the Red Sea coast. The stabilization of heavy metal elements, such as zinc, in the form of ions within the glass-ceramics represents a valuable approach to addressing environmental pollution caused by heavy metals. This study investigates the feasibility and physicochemical properties of diopside-based glass-ceramics synthesized from zinc-containing smelting slag. The zinc-rich smelting slag is abundant in SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, and other constituents, thereby providing cost-effective and efficient raw materials for glass-ceramic production. The conversion of zinc-containing smelting slag into glass-ceramics was achieved through a melting process. We analyzed the effects of varying doping levels on the properties of the resulting glass-ceramics. The results indicated that as the doping level of smelting slag increases, the crystallization temperature of the glass-ceramics decreases while the crystal phases of diopside and anorthite progressively increase, significantly enhancing both mechanical strength and chemical stability. Notably, when the doping level reaches 60%, these glass-ceramics exhibit remarkable physical properties, including high density (3.12 g/cm3), Vickers hardness (16.60 GPa), and excellent flexural strength (150.75 MPa). Furthermore, with increasing amounts of doped smelting slag, there are substantial improvements in acid resistance, alkali resistance, and corrosion resistance in these materials. Raman spectroscopy and EDS analysis further verified a uniform distribution of the crystal phase and effective immobilization of heavy metal zinc. Full article

With increasing urban economic development, some industrial parks and residential areas are being situated adjacent to each other, creating a potential risk of soil and groundwater contamination from the wastewater and solid waste produced by enterprises. This contamination poses a threat to the health of nearby residents. Currently, groundwater pollution prevention and control zoning in China primarily targets groundwater environmental pollution risks and does not consider the health risks associated with groundwater exposure in industry–city integration areas. Therefore, a scientific assessment of environmental risks in industry–city integration areas is essential for effectively managing groundwater pollution. This study focuses on the high frequency and rapid pace of human activities in industry–city integration areas. It combines health risk assessment and groundwater pollution simulation results with traditional groundwater pollution control classification outcomes to develop a groundwater pollution risk zoning framework specifically suited to these integrated areas. Using this framework, we systematically assessed groundwater pollution risks in a representative industry–city integration area in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in China and delineated groundwater pollution risk zones to provide a scientific basis for local groundwater environmental management. The assessment results indicate that the total area of groundwater pollution risk control zones is 30.37 km2, accounting for 19.06% of the total study area. The first-level control zone covers 5.38 km2 (3.38% of the total area), while the secondary control zone spans 24.99 km2 (15.68% of the total area). The first-level control zone is concentrated within industrial clusters, whereas the secondary control zone is widely distributed throughout the region. In comparison to traditional assessment methods, the zoning results derived from this study are more suitable for industry–city integration areas. This study also provides groundwater management recommendations for such areas, offering valuable insights for groundwater control in integrated industrial–residential zones. Full article

Plastic debris is a pervasive and persistent threat to marine ecosystems. Microplastics (plastics < 5 mm) are increasing in a variety of marine habitats, including open water systems, shorelines, and benthic sediments. It remains unclear how microplastics distribute and accumulate in marine systems and the extent to which this pollutant is accessible to marine taxa. We examined subtidal benthic sediments and beach sediments in critical nearshore habitats for forage fish species—Pacific sand lance (Ammodytes personatus), Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi), and surf smelt (Hypomesus pretiosus)—to quantify microplastic concentrations in the spawning and deep-water habitats of these fish and better understand how microplastics accumulate and distribute in nearshore systems. In the San Juan Islands, we examined an offshore subtidal bedform in a high-flow channel and beach sites of protected and exposed shorelines. We also examined 12 beach sites proximate to urban areas in Puget Sound. Microplastics were found in all samples and at all sample sites. Microfibers were the most abundant, and flakes were present proximate to major shipyards and marinas. Microplastics were significantly elevated in Puget Sound compared to the San Juan Archipelago. Protected beaches had elevated concentrations relative to exposed beaches and subtidal sediments. Microplastics were in higher concentrations in sand and fine-grain sediments, poorly sorted sediments, and artificial sediments. Microplastics were also elevated at sites confirmed as spawning habitats for forage fish. The model results indicate that both current speed and proximate urban populations influence nearshore microplastic concentrations. Our research provides new insights into how microplastics are distributed, deposited, and retained in marine sediments and shorelines, as well as insight into potential exposure in benthic, demersal, and shoreline habitats. Further analyses are required to examine the relative influence of urban populations and shipping lanes and the effects of physical processes such as wave exposure, tidal currents, and shoreline geometry. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are emerging pollutants of global concern due to their high environmental persistence and bioaccumulative characteristics. This study investigates PFAS concentrations in soils from China through an extensive literature review, covering soil samples from seventeen provinces and the years from 2009 to 2024. It was found that the total concentration of PFAS in soil ranged from 0.25 to 6240 ng/g, with the highest contamination levels observed in coastal provinces, particularly Fujian (620 ng/g) and Guangdong (1090 ng/g). Moreover, Fujian Province ranked the highest among multiple regions with a median PFAS concentration of 15.7 ng/g for individual compounds. Ecological risk assessment, focusing on areas where perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were identified as the primary soil PFAS compounds, showed moderate ecological risk from PFOA in Shanghai (0.24), while PFOS posed a high ecological risk in Fujian and Guangdong, with risk values of 43.3 and 1.4, respectively. Source analysis revealed that anthropogenic activities, including PFAS production, firefighting foam usage, and landfills, were the primary contributors to soil contamination. Moreover, soil PFASs tend to migrate into groundwater via adsorption and seepage, ultimately entering the human body through bioaccumulation or drinking water, posing health risks. These findings enhance our understanding of PFAS distribution and associated risks in Chinese soils, providing crucial insights for pollution management, source identification, and regulation strategies in diverse areas. The current focus of urban environmental governance is on the traffic noise pollution caused by road transportation. Elevated complex roads, defined as transportation systems comprising elevated roads and underlying ground-level roads, exhibit unique traffic noise distribution characteristics due to the presence of double-decked roads and viaducts. This study conducted noise measurements at two sections of elevated complex roads in Guangzhou, including assessing noise levels at the road boundaries and examining noise distribution at different distances from roads and building heights. The results show that the horizontal distance attenuation of noise in adjacent areas exhibits no significant difference from that of ground-level roads, but substantial discrepancies exist in vertical height distribution. The under-viaduct space experiences more severe noise pollution than areas above the viaduct height, and the installation of sound barriers alters the spatial distribution trend of traffic noise. Given that installing sound barriers solely on elevated roads is insufficient to improve the acoustic environment, systematic noise mitigation strategies should be developed for elevated composite road systems. Additionally, the study reveals that nighttime noise fluctuations are significantly greater than those during the day, further exacerbating residents’ noise annoyance. Full article

The Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, characterized by high population density, an advanced transportation system, and a concentration of industrial activity, is one of the regions severely affected by O3 pollution in central and eastern China. Using data collected from 251 monitoring stations between 2015 and 2025, this paper analyzed the spatio-temporal variation of 8 h O3 concentrations and instances of exceedance. On the basis of exploring the influence of meteorological factors on regional 8 h O3 concentration, the potential source contribution areas of pollutants under the exceedance condition were investigated using the HYSPLIT model. The results indicate a rapid increase in the 8 h O3 concentration at a rate of 0.91 ± 0.98 μg·m−3·a−1, with the average number of days exceeding concentration standards reaching 41.05 in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration. Spatially, the 8 h O3 concentrations were higher in coastal areas and lower in inland regions, as well as elevated in plains compared to hilly terrains. This distribution was significantly distinct from the concentration growth trend characterized by higher levels in the northwest and lower levels in the southeast. Furthermore, it diverged from the spatial characteristics where exceedances primarily occurred in the heavily industrialized northeastern region and the lightly industrialized central region, indicating that the growth and exceedance of 8 h O3 concentrations were influenced by disparate factors. Local human activities have intensified the emissions of ozone precursor substances, which could be the key driving factor for the significant increase in regional 8 h O3 concentrations. In the context of high temperatures and low humidity, this has contributed to elevated levels of 8 h O3 concentrations. When wind speeds were below 2.5 m·s−1, the proportion of 8 h O3 concentrations exceeding the standards was nearly 0 under almost calm wind conditions, and it showed an increasing trend with rising wind speeds, indicating that the potential precursor sources that caused high O3 concentrations originated occasionally from inland regions, with very limited presence within the study area. This observation implies that the main cause of exceedances was the transport effect of pollution from outside the region. Therefore, it is recommended that the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration adopt economic and technological compensation mechanisms within and between regions to reduce the emission intensity of precursor substances in potential source areas, thereby effectively controlling O3 concentrations and improving public living conditions and quality of life. A comparative analysis of testicular tumors in dogs and humans highlights notable similarities in cancer behavior, particularly regarding environmental influences. The ubiquitous distribution of endocrine disruptors in industrialized countries and their effects are strongly linked to the development of testicular cancers. This study examined 221 and 174 cases of testicular tumor in dogs and humans, respectively, from the Campania Animal Cancer Registry and the database of the National Cancer Institute “Fondazione G. Pascale-IRCCS”, between 2020 and 2023. These data were integrated with environmental data from the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security website and the Campania Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPAC). The areas with the highest frequency of testicular tumors in both species were the municipalities of Napoli, Salerno, and Caserta, and their corresponding provinces. The same locations experienced severe contamination of soil and water by environmental pollutants, probably correlated to testicular tumors. Although the molecular mechanisms are not yet fully understood, our data suggest a strong link between the frequency of testicular tumors in humans and dogs and high concentrations of environmental pollutants in the reported locations. These findings emphasize the value of dogs as a potential animal model for studying human health and the effect of environmental factors on cancer development. Full article

With the rapid progression of global industrialization and urbanization, emerging contaminants (ECs) have become pervasive in environmental media, posing considerable risks to ecosystems and human health. While multidisciplinary evidence continues to accumulate regarding their environmental persistence and bioaccumulative hazards, critical knowledge gaps persist in understanding their spatiotemporal distribution, cross-media migration mechanisms, and cascading ecotoxicological consequences. This review systematically investigates the global distribution patterns of ECs in aquatic environments over the past five years and evaluates their potential ecological risks. Furthermore, it examines the performance of various treatment technologies, focusing on economic cost, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Methodologically aligned with PRISMA 2020 guidelines, this study implements dual independent screening protocols, stringent inclusion–exclusion criteria (n = 327 studies). Key findings reveal the following: (1) Occurrences of ECs show geographical clustering in highly industrialized river basins, particularly in Asia (37.05%), Europe (24.31%), and North America (14.01%), where agricultural pharmaceuticals and fluorinated compounds contribute disproportionately to environmental loading. (2) Complex transboundary pollutant transport through atmospheric deposition and oceanic currents, coupled with compound-specific partitioning behaviors across water–sediment–air interfaces. (3) Emerging hybrid treatment systems (e.g., catalytic membrane bioreactors, plasma-assisted advanced oxidation) achieve > 90% removal for recalcitrant ECs, though requiring 15–40% cost reductions for scalable implementation. This work provides actionable insights for developing adaptive regulatory frameworks and advancing green chemistry principles in environmental engineering practice. Full article

Various nature-based solutions (NbS)—such as constructed wetlands, drainage ditches, and vegetated buffer strips—have recently demonstrated strong potential for mitigating pollutant transport in open channels and river systems. Numerical modeling is a widely adopted and effective approach for assessing the performance of these interventions. This study presents the first development of a two-dimensional (2D) meshless advection–diffusion model based on an Eulerian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) framework, specifically designed to simulate passive pollutant transport in open channel flows. The proposed model marks a pioneering application of the ESPH technique to environmental pollutant transport problems. It couples the 2D depth-averaged shallow water equations with an advection–diffusion equation to represent both fluid motion and pollutant concentration dynamics. A uniform particle arrangement ensures that each fluid particle interacts symmetrically with eight neighboring particles for flux computation. To represent the pollutant transport process, the dispersion coefficient is defined as the sum of molecular and turbulent diffusion components. The turbulent diffusion coefficient is calculated using a prescribed turbulent Schmidt number and the eddy viscosity obtained from a Smagorinsky-type mixing-length turbulence model. Three analytical case studies, including one-dimensional transcritical open channel flow, 2D isotropic and anisotropic diffusion in still water, and advection–diffusion in a 2D uniform flow, are employed to verify the model’s accuracy and convergence. The model demonstrates first-order convergence, with relative root mean square errors (RRMSEs) of approximately 0.2% for water depth and velocity, and 0.1–0.5% for concentration. Additionally, the model is applied to a laboratory experiment involving 2D pollutant dispersion in a 90° junction channel. The simulated results show good agreement with measured velocity and concentration distributions. These findings indicate that the developed model is a reliable and effective tool for evaluating the performance of NbS in mitigating pollutant transport in open channels and river systems.
