Background: In light of increasing breast cancer survival rates, it is essential to address cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), a common yet often underestimated symptom. Methods: A randomised controlled trial is proposed involving 50 newly diagnosed participants, divided into a control group (CG) and an intervention group (IG). Both groups will receive an educational leaflet, while the IG will also take part in an individualised cognitive training programme based on everyday cognition (80 sessions distributed across four periods, compiled in a training dossier). Cognitive, emotional, and functional variables will be assessed before and after the intervention: cognitive function (MoCA test), everyday cognition (PECC), anxiety (Hamilton), functionality (LB), sleep quality (PSQI), quality of life (ECOG), and subjective memory complaints (FACT-COG). Expected results: Findings may guide future interventions and tailored protocols to alleviate CRCI in breast cancer patients undergoing active treatment. The excessive use of antimicrobials drives the emergence of multidrug resistance (MDR) in bacterial strains, which harbor resistance genes to survive under diverse drug pressures. Such resistance can result in life-threatening infections. The predominance of MDR Pseudomonas spp. poses significant challenges to public health and environmental sustainability, particularly in ecosystems affected by human activities. Characterizing MDR Pseudomonas spp. is crucial for developing effective diagnostic tools and biosecurity protocols, with broader implications for managing other pathogenic bacteria. Strains were diagnosed through 16S rRNA PCR and sequencing, complemented by phylogenetic analysis to evaluate local and global evolutionary connections. Antibiotic susceptibility tests revealed extensive resistance across multiple classes, with MIC values surpassing clinical breakpoints. This study examined the genetic diversity, resistance potential, and phylogenetic relationships among Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain DG2 and Pseudomonas fluorescens strain FM3, which were isolated from solid waste dump sites (n = 30) and dairy farms (n = 22) in West Bengal, India. Phylogenetic analysis reveals distinct clusters that highlight significant geographic linkages and genetic variability among the strains. Significant biofilm production under antibiotic exposure markedly increased resistance levels. RAPD-PCR profiling revealed substantial genetic diversity among the isolates, indicating variations in their genetic makeup. In contrast, SDS-PAGE analysis provided insights into the protein expression patterns that are activated by stress, which are closely linked to MDR. This dual approach offers a clearer perspective on their adaptive responses to environmental stressors. This study underscores the need for vigilant monitoring of MDR Pseudomonas spp. in anthropogenically impacted environments to mitigate risks to human and animal health. Surveillance strategies combining phenotypic and molecular approaches are essential to assess the risks posed by resilient pathogens. Canine leishmaniosis (CanL), caused by Leishmania infantum, is a major zoonotic disease primarily transmitted by sand flies. Unlike in adult dogs, the clinical course of CanL in puppies remains poorly characterized, regardless of the transmission pathway (i.e., vertical transmission or vector exposure). This study presents the first systematic literature review (SLR) focused on juvenile CanL, alongside an atypical clinical case report. A PRISMA-compliant search across four databases identified three eligible studies describing CanL in puppies (≤9 months, according to the current canine life stage guidelines). The case involves a 4.5-month-old puppy adopted from southern Italy with papulo-nodular skin lesions and generalized lymphadenomegaly as well as a mild normocytic normochromic anemia and increased C-reactive protein. L. infantum infection was confirmed by serology, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and cytology. The SLR suggests that dermatological lesions and/or lymphadenomegaly, whether associated with laboratory abnormalities, represent the most common clinical manifestations of CanL in puppies. In the presented case, the coexistence of systemic dissemination signs and papulo-nodular skin lesions, typically associated with vector-borne transmission, suggests the possibility of a dual route of infection by L. infantum. Juvenile CanL should be considered in differential diagnoses and supported by thorough diagnostic evaluation and appropriate follow-up protocols. Full article

The widespread environmental dissemination of imidazole compounds necessitates robust analytical monitoring tools. This study developed a novel isotope-labeled surrogate-based high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method for the simultaneous determination of 21 imidazoles in water, sediment, and soil. The optimized SPE protocol using Oasis HLB cartridges achieved high recoveries, with chromatographic separation completed in 25 min. Six isotope-labeled standards effectively corrected matrix effects (−57% to 8%), yielding MQLs < 1.0 ng·L−1 (water) and <1.0 μg·kg−1 (sediment/soil). Validation confirmed linearity (R2 > 0.995), accuracy (60–120% recovery for 20/21 analytes), and precision (relative standard deviation, RSD < 15%). Its application in Jiulong River revealed significant contamination, detecting eight imidazoles in both water (up to 49.29 ng·L−1) and sediment (up to 24.01 μg·kg−1). This standardized tool enables routine monitoring of pharmaceutical residues across environmental compartments, supporting regulatory frameworks. Full article

Background/objectives: Despite advancements in early diagnosis and clinical practices guided by standardized care protocols, Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is marked by an unfavorable prognosis with a 5-year relative survival rate of 65%, based primarily on data collected prior to the introduction of immunotherapy. Regional nodal metastases affect 40–50% of MCC patients, while approximately 33% experience distant dissemination. Among these, bone and bone marrow metastases are particularly notable, although the characteristics and clinical implications of this metastatic disease in MCC remain poorly understood. Methods: A comprehensive review was conducted using the Medline database (via PubMed) up to January 2025. The search strategy included the string “(Merkel cell carcinoma AND (bone OR marrow))”. Results: A total of 1133 (69.3% male and 30.7% female) patients diagnosed with advanced MCC were collected. The median (IQR) age at diagnosis was 67.5 (12.65) years old. Overall, 201 (20.8%) cases of bone and/or bone marrow metastases were identified and linked to a primary known MCC in 75.7% of cases. Bone metastases (BMs) appear as the third most common metastatic site, following the liver (second) and lymph nodes (first). They show mixed biological and radiological behavior, with a marked preference for the axial skeleton over the appendicular one. Addressing the characteristics of metastatic bone disease, neurological symptoms were the most documented, whereas bone marrow involvement and leukemic spread seemed to be primarily related to immunosuppression. Multimodal treatment strategies, including platinum-based chemotherapy and radiotherapy, were the primary approaches adopted, reflecting therapeutic practices from the pre-immunotherapy era. Conclusions: The pattern of metastatic spread in MCC differs among studies, with the bones resulting as the third most common site of distant spread. Excluding head and neck MCC, which seems to be more regularly associated with liver metastases, the relationship between the primary tumor site and the development of bone or bone marrow metastases appears inconsistent. Overall, BMs mostly correlated with advanced MCC stages and poorer survival outcomes, with a median overall survival (OS) of 8 months (range 12.75–4). The integration of international guidelines, evolving evidence from clinical trials, and the expanding role of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) will contribute to improving systemic disease control and enhance patient care. Background/Objectives: Cigarette smoking has been causally linked to 90% of all cases of lung cancer, contributing to its high mortality rate. Lung cancer screening centers offer low-dose computed tomography, the only recommended diagnostic screening tool for lung cancer detection. A previous Texas-based study found that centers with lung cancer screening programs failed to consistently provide evidence-based tobacco cessation and relapse prevention interventions recommended by clinical practice guidelines to their patients, who are primarily people who currently or previously smoked. This represents a missed opportunity to assist patients by providing evidence-based tobacco use care during a particularly relevant clinical encounter. Methods: To improve cigarette smoking cessation care delivery and relapse prevention in this setting, this protocol paper seeks to provide a framework for adapting Taking Texas Tobacco Free, a comprehensive, evidence-based tobacco-free workplace program, to lung cancer screening centers. The adapted program, Project SWITCH, will be developed through a formative evaluation process with center stakeholders to identify proactive adaptations to programming based on center-specific contexts. Project SWITCH is expected to be implemented in at least nine lung cancer screening centers in Texas and will be disseminated more broadly to centers statewide. Results: Quantitative and qualitative data will be collected from multiple stakeholders throughout the intervention using a convergent parallel mixed methods design to make additional program adaptations and comprehensively evaluate the achievement of the project’s implementation and dissemination goals. Conclusions: Results from this project’s implementation and dissemination phases are expected to reduce lung cancer morbidity and mortality in Texas by providing an evidence-based, sustainable framework for tobacco-free workplace programs in this specific setting that improves cancer prevention and control practices. Psychedelic treatments are emerging as promising interventions for many mental health conditions. These interventions are not offered in a standardized fashion across studies and between different healthcare centers. Beyond differences in substances and doses, there is also a great heterogeneity in the interventions provided by therapists. The current review offers a summary of important elements that should be reported when describing psychedelic-assisted therapies. Clinical trials involving psilocybin for depression are systematically reviewed to synthesize available descriptions of their interventions. This review demonstrates that the exact nature of these psychotherapeutic interventions tends to be poorly defined in most scientific papers on psychedelic treatments. This problem and its implications are examined. The field stands to gain from optimized psychotherapeutic methods; however, insufficient documentation in scientific papers currently hinders the dissemination and improvement of evidence-based protocols. This article offers ideas to encourage the progress of research on psychedelic-assisted therapies. Full article

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) significantly impacts global livestock industries, with raw milk transportation posing a recognized pathway for viral dissemination, particularly in endemic regions. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of FMD virus (FMDV) introduction and transmission to dairy farms via raw milk transportation in Ban Thi District, Thailand. A qualitative risk assessment methodology, adhering to WOAH guidelines, was employed. Data were collected through structured farmer surveys (n = 109), expert interviews (n = 12), and reviews of national disease surveillance data and scientific literature. The risk assessment, utilizing a scenario tree approach for domestic dairy cattle, revealed a moderate overall risk of FMDV transmission. This finding is primarily attributed to critical gaps in on-farm biosecurity practices, potential contamination at milk collection centers, and significant challenges in detecting subclinical carrier animals. While the qualitative approach presented inherent limitations and uncertainties, the study successfully highlighted key vulnerabilities. The results underscore the urgent necessity for implementing targeted biosecurity protocols, developing more robust surveillance strategies for FMDV carriers, and establishing standardized risk assessment frameworks to mitigate potential outbreaks and protect the regional dairy industry. This paper addresses the challenges of multicasting in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs), where communication relies exclusively on direct interactions between mobile nodes without the support of fixed infrastructure. In such networks, efficient information dissemination is critical, particularly in scenarios where an event detected by one node must be reliably communicated to a designated subset of nodes. The highly dynamic nature of MANET, characterized by frequent topology changes and unpredictable connectivity, poses significant challenges to stable and efficient multicasting. To address these issues, we adopt a Publish/Subscribe (Pub/Sub) model that utilizes brokers as intermediaries for information dissemination. However, ensuring the robustness of broker-based multicasting in a highly mobile environment requires novel strategies to mitigate the effects of frequent disconnections and mobility-induced disruptions. To this end, we propose a framework based on three key principles: (1) leveraging the Disruption-Tolerant Networking Implementations of the Bundle Protocol 7 (DTN7) at the network layer to sustain message delivery even in the presence of intermittent connectivity and high node mobility; (2) dynamically generating broker replicas to ensure that broker functionality persists despite sudden node failures or disconnections; and (3) enabling brokers and their replicas to periodically broadcast advertisement packets to maintain communication paths and facilitate efficient data forwarding, drawing inspiration from Named Data Networking (NDN) techniques. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct extensive simulations using ns-3, examining its impact on message delivery reliability, latency, and overall network throughput. The results demonstrate that our method significantly reduces message delivery delays while improving delivery rates, particularly in high-mobility scenarios. Additionally, the integration of DTN7 at the bundle layer proves effective in mitigating performance degradation in environments where nodes frequently change their positions. Our findings highlight the potential of our approach in enhancing the resilience and efficiency of broker-assisted multicasting in MANET, making it a promising solution for real-world applications such as disaster response, military operations, and decentralized IoT networks. From Farm to Slaughter: Tracing Antimicrobial Resistance in a Poultry Short Food Chain

Background: Short food supply chains are commonly perceived as more sustainable and safer alternatives to conventional production systems, often linked to organic, free-range livestock practices. Materials and methods: This study investigates, for the first time, the distribution of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and characterizes the microbial communities’ composition, using 16S rRNA sequencing and real-time PCR, respectively. Eleven fecal, 76 slaughterhouse surface, 11 cecal, and 11 carcass samples, from 11 poultry farms belonging to the same short food chain, were analyzed in the study. Results: While cleaning and disinfection procedures appeared to reduce the bacterial load on slaughterhouse surfaces, diverse and potentially resistant bacteria, including genera such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, persisted both before and after slaughter. ARGs conferring resistance to high-priority critically important antimicrobials (HPCIAs), such as fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins, were frequently detected on carcasses, with qnrS (76.15%, 95%CI 68.02-84.28%) and blaCMY2 (57.8%, 95%CI 48.38-67.22%) being the most prevalent. The slaughtering process emerged as a critical step for ARG dissemination via intestinal bacteria, such as genus Lactobacillus. Additionally, the detection of mcr genes and blaNDM on carcasses but not in the bird gut samples suggests possible anthropogenic contamination. Discussion: These findings highlight that the evisceration process, slaughterhouse environment, and personnel are all contributing factors in ARG spread and underscore the need for enhanced hygiene protocols and reduced gut ARG carriage in domestic birds to mitigate the risk for the consumer. The Social Opportunistic Internet of Things (SO-IoT) is a rapidly emerging paradigm that enables mobile, ad-hoc device communication based on both physical and social interactions. In such networks, routing decisions heavily depend on the selection of intermediate nodes to ensure secure and efficient data dissemination. Traditional approaches relying solely on reliability or social interest fail to capture the multifaceted trustworthiness of nodes in dynamic SO-IoT environments. This paper proposes a trust-based route optimization framework that integrates social interest and behavioral reliability using Bayesian inference and Jeffrey’s conditioning. A composite trust level is computed for each intermediate node to determine its suitability for data forwarding. To validate the framework, we conduct a two-phase simulation-based analysis: a scenario-driven evaluation that demonstrates the model’s behavior in controlled settings, and a large-scale NS-3-based simulation comparing our method with benchmark routing schemes, including random, greedy, and AI-based protocols. Results confirm that our proposed model achieves up to an 88.9% delivery ratio with minimal energy consumption and the highest trust accuracy (86.5%), demonstrating its robustness and scalability in real-world-inspired IoT environments. In cancer cases, any imbalance between Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production and host antioxidant capacity (oxidative stress), during the immediate post-operative period, is involved in cancer cell dissemination (micro-metastases). Surgical trauma is considered the main cause for ROS production during that period. Increased oxidative stress has been found in dogs with mammary neoplasms. Our objective was to investigate the blood oxidant/antioxidant profile in bitches with mammary cancer, during the peri-operative period, hypothesizing that oxidative stress would be further increased after mastectomy. Twelve bitches with mammary cancer and no distant metastases, with a comparable extent of surgical wound and receiving the same anesthetic protocol, were included. Their serum oxidant/antioxidant profile was evaluated chromatometrically using the d-ROMs (Reactive Oxygen Metabolite-derived compounds) and the BAP (biological antioxidant potential) tests, on the 1st day (before/after surgery), and on the 2nd, 3rd and 10th days post-operatively. The ratio of d-ROMs and BAP values (oxidative stress index; OSI) was also calculated. Statistically significant differences (increases) were found only in d-ROMS on the second and third post-operative day compared to the first day (before surgery) of measurement (p = 0.007 and p = 0.002, respectively). Our findings indicate a post-surgical overproduction of ROS and therefore an oxidative stress increase potentially affecting patient outcome. Full article

The Virtual-Body Project Reduces Eating Disorder Symptoms Among Young Adult Brazilian Women: A Pilot Study

Background/Objectives: Dissonance-based (DB) eating disorder (ED) prevention programs have been showing their efficacy in reducing ED symptoms among adolescents, young adults, and older people. Several meta-analyses showed that the Body Project is the most effective ED prevention program for at-risk women; however, the program presents high costs when delivered in-person and recruitment on a large scale is limited, suggesting the evaluation of its efficacy when delivered virtually. Thus, we investigated the efficacy of the v-Body Project (i.e., a virtual DB ED prevention program) among young adult Brazilian women. Methods: A pilot study delivered the v-Body Project to 85 Brazilian women (Mage = 22.55, SD = 2.07, age range = 18–25). Measures of ED symptoms, body dissatisfaction, the thin ideal internalization, negative affect, self-esteem, and body appreciation were applied at baseline, post-intervention, and at 1-month and 6-months follow-up. Results: Results demonstrated improvements in all outcomes at post-intervention. Large effect sizes were found for ED symptoms, body dissatisfaction, thin–ideal internalization, negative affect, and body appreciation (Cohen’s d = 0.74–1.31) and were maintained up to 6-months. A small effect size was identified for self-esteem (Cohen’s d = 0.40), while the efficacy was maintained up to 6-months. Conclusions: Results support the efficacy of the v-Body Project up to 6-months, providing a tool with lower costs for participants and the advantage of large-scale application for ED prevention programs. Strategies are needed to implement this protocol within the Brazilian public health system, including the training of facilitators and the broader dissemination of the intervention. Full article

Data-Mining-Aided-Material Design of Doped LaMnO3 Perovskites with Higher Curie Temperature

The Curie temperature (Tc) of LaMnO3-based perovskites is one of the most important properties associated with their magnetic and spintronic applications. The search for new perovskites with even higher Tc is a challenging problem in material design. Through the systematic optimization of support vector regression (SVR) architecture, we establish a predictive framework for determining the Curie temperature (Tc) of doped LaMnO3 perovskites, leveraging fundamental atomic descriptors. The correlation coefficient (R) between the predicted and experimental Curie temperatures demonstrated high values of 0.9111 when evaluated through the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) approach, while maintaining a robust correlation of 0.8385 on the independent test set. The subsequent high-throughput screening of perovskite compounds exhibiting higher Curie temperatures was implemented via our online computation platform for materials data mining (OCPMDM), enabling the rapid identification of candidate materials through systematic screening protocols. The findings demonstrate that machine learning exhibits significant efficacy and cost-effectiveness in identifying lanthanum manganite perovskites with elevated Tc, as validated through comparative computational and empirical analyses. Furthermore, a web-based computational infrastructure is implemented for the global dissemination of the predictive framework, enabling the open-access deployment of the validated machine learning model. A Blockchain-Based Framework for Secure Data Stream Dissemination in Federated IoT Environments

An industrial-scale increase in applications of the Internet of Things (IoT), a significant number of which are based on the concept of federation, presents unique security challenges due to their distributed nature and the need for secure communication between components from different administrative domains. A federation may be created for the duration of a mission, such as military operations or Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations. These missions often occur in very difficult or even hostile environments, posing additional challenges for ensuring reliability and security. The heterogeneity of devices, protocols, and security requirements in different domains further complicates the requirements for the secure distribution of data streams in federated IoT environments. The effective dissemination of data streams in federated environments also ensures the flexibility to filter and search for patterns in real-time to detect critical events or threats (e.g., fires and hostile objects) with changing information needs of end users. The paper presents a novel and practical framework for secure and reliable data stream dissemination in federated IoT environments, leveraging blockchain, Apache Kafka brokers, and microservices. To authenticate IoT devices and verify data streams, we have integrated a hardware and software IoT gateway with the Hyperledger Fabric (HLF) blockchain platform, which records the distinguishing features of IoT devices (fingerprints). In this paper, we analyzed our platform’s security, focusing on secure data distribution. We formally discussed potential attack vectors and ways to mitigate them through the platform’s design. We thoroughly assess the effectiveness of the proposed framework by conducting extensive performance tests in two setups: the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud-based and Raspberry Pi resource-constrained environments. Implementing our framework in the AWS cloud infrastructure has demonstrated that it is suitable for processing audiovisual streams in environments that require immediate interoperability. The results are promising, as the average time it takes for a consumer to read a verified data stream is in the order of seconds. The measured time for complete processing of an audiovisual stream corresponds to approximately 25 frames per second (fps). The results obtained also confirmed the computational stability of our framework. Furthermore, we have confirmed that our environment can be deployed on resource-constrained commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) platforms while maintaining low operational costs. Full article
