Enhancing the wear resistance of structural steels used in demanding industrial applications is critical for extending components’ lifespan and ensuring mechanical reliability. In this study, we investigated the influence of flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) hardfacing on the tensile behavior of S355MC steel. Protective Fe-Cr-C alloy layers were deposited in one and two successive passes using automated FCAW, followed by tensile testing of specimens oriented at varying angles relative to the weld bead direction. The methodology integrated 3D scanning and digital image correlation to accurately capture geometric and deformation parameters. The experimental results revealed a consistent reduction in tensile strength and ductility in all the welded configurations compared to the base material. The application of the second weld layer further intensified this effect, while specimen orientation influenced the degree of mechanical degradation. Microstructural analysis confirmed carbide refinement and good adhesion, but also identified welding-induced defects and residual stresses as factors that contributed to performance loss. The findings highlight a clear trade-off between improved surface wear resistance and compromised structural properties, underscoring the importance of process optimization. Strategic selection of welding parameters and bead orientation is essential to balance functional durability with mechanical integrity in industrial applications. Full article

Material Extrusion (MEX) process is increasingly used to fabricate components for structural applications, driven by the availability of advanced materials and greater industrial adoption. In these contexts, understanding the mechanical performance of printed parts is crucial. However, conventional methods for assessing anisotropic elastic behavior often rely on expensive equipment and time-consuming procedures. The aim of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the impulse excitation of vibration (IEV) in characterizing the dynamic mechanical properties of a 3D-printed composite material. Tensile tests were also performed to compare quasi-static properties with the dynamic ones obtained through IEV. The tested material, Nylon 12CF, contains 35% short carbon fibers by weight and is commercially available from Stratasys. It is used in the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process, a Material Extrusion technology, and exhibits anisotropic mechanical properties. This is further reinforced by the filament deposition process, which affects the mechanical response of printed parts. Young’s modulus obtained in the direction perpendicular to the deposition plane (E33), obtained via IEV, was 14.77% higher than the value in the technical datasheet. Comparing methods, the Young’s modulus obtained in the deposition plane, in an inclined direction of 45 degrees in relation to the deposition direction (E45), showed a 22.95% difference between IEV and tensile tests, while Poisson’s ratio in the deposition plane (v12) differed by 6.78%. This data is critical for designing parts subject to demanding service conditions, and the results obtained (orthotropic elastic properties) can be used in finite element simulation software. Ultimately, this work reinforces the potential of the IEV method as an accessible and consistent alternative for characterizing the anisotropic properties of components produced through additive manufacturing (AM). This study investigates the bond behavior of fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites with three common masonry substrates—solid clay bricks (SBs), perforated bricks (PBs), and concrete hollow blocks (HBs)—using knitted polyester grille (KPG) fabric. Through uniaxial tensile tests of the KPG fabric and FRCM system, along with single-lap and double-lap shear tests, the interfacial debonding modes, load-slip responses, and composite utilization ratio were evaluated. Key findings reveal that (i) SB and HB substrates predominantly exhibited fabric slippage (FS) or matrix–fabric (MF) debonding, while PB substrates consistently failed at the matrix–substrate (MS) interface, due to their smooth surface texture. (ii) Prism specimens with mortar joints showed enhanced interfacial friction, leading to higher load fluctuations compared to brick units. PB substrates demonstrated the lowest peak stress (69.64–74.33 MPa), while SB and HB achieved comparable peak stresses (133.91–155.95 MPa). (iii) The FRCM system only achieved a utilization rate of 12–30% in fabric and reinforcement systems. The debonding failure at the matrix–substrate interface is one of the reasons that cannot be ignored, and exploring methods to improve the bonding performance between the matrix–substrate interface is the next research direction. HB bricks have excellent bonding properties, and it is recommended to prioritize their use in retrofit applications, followed by SB bricks. These findings provide insights into optimizing the application of FRCM reinforcement systems in masonry structures. Full article

In engineering practice, liquid droplet impingement typically occurs at an oblique angle relative to the target surface, yet the influence of impact orientation on damage outcomes remains contentious and exhibits target-material dependency. In this paper, a typical single-waterjet-generating technique is applied to liquid impact tests on a unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate, with special focus on the effects of the impingement angle and the fiber orientation. Finite-element simulation is employed to help reveal the failure mechanism of oblique impacts. The results show that, in most cases, the damage caused by a 15° oblique impact is slightly larger than that of a normal impact, while the increase amplitude varies with different impact speeds. Resin removal is more prone to occur when the projection of the waterjet velocity on the impact surface is perpendicular (marked as the fiber orientation PE) rather than parallel (marked as the fiber orientation PA) to the fiber direction of the top layer. A PE fiber orientation can lead to mass material peeling in comparison with PA, and the damage range is even much larger than for a normal impact. The underlying mechanism can be attributed to the increased lateral jet-particle velocity and resultant shear stress along the impact projection direction. The distinct damage modes observed on the CFRP laminate with the different fiber orientations PE and PA originate from the asymmetric tensile properties in the longitudinal/transverse directions of laminates coupled with dissimilar fiber–matrix interfacial characteristics. A theoretical model for the surface damage area under a single-jet impact was established through experimental data fitting based on a modified water-hammer pressure contact-radius formulation. The model quantitatively characterizes the influence of critical parameters, including the jet velocity, diameter, and impact angle, on the central area of the surface failure ring. Full article

This study proposes a novel LK-BP-AFPSO model for the nondestructive evaluation of wood mechanical properties, combining a backpropagation neural network (BP) with adaptive fractional-order particle swarm optimization (AFPSO) and Liang–Kleeman (LK) information flow theory. The model accurately predicts four key mechanical properties—longitudinal tensile strength (SPG), modulus of elasticity (MOE), bending strength (MOR), and longitudinal compressive strength (CSP)—using only nondestructive physical features. Tested across diverse wood types (fast-growing YKS, red-heart CSH/XXH, and iron-heart XXT), the framework demonstrates strong generalizability, achieving an average prediction accuracy (R2) of 0.986 and reducing mean absolute error (MAE) by 23.7% compared to conventional methods. A critical innovation is the integration of LK causal analysis, which quantifies feature–target relationships via information flow metrics, effectively eliminating 29.5% of spurious correlations inherent in traditional feature selection (e.g., PCA). Experimental results confirm the model’s robustness, particularly for heartwood variants, while its adaptive fractional-order optimization accelerates convergence by 2.1× relative to standard PSO. This work provides a reliable, interpretable tool for wood quality assessment, with direct implications for grading systems and processing optimization in the forestry industry. Full article

This paper presents research in the field of computer-aided 3D clothing design, focusing on an investigation of three methods for determining the mechanical properties of woven fabrics and their impact on 3D clothing simulations in the context of sustainable apparel development. Five mechanical parameters were analyzed: tensile elongation in the warp and weft directions, shear stiffness, bending stiffness, specific weight, and fabric thickness. These parameters were integrated into the CLO3D CAD software v.2025.0.408, using data obtained via the KES-FB system, the Fabric Kit protocol, and the AI-based tool, SEDDI Textura 2024. Simulations of women’s blouse and trousers were evaluated using dynamic tests and validated by real prototypes measured with the ARAMIS optical 3D system. Results show average differences between digital and real prototype deformation data up to 6% with an 8% standard deviation, confirming the high accuracy of 3D simulations based on the determined mechanical parameters of the real fabric sample. Notably, the AI-based method demonstrated excellent simulation results compared with real garments, highlighting its potential for accessible, sustainable, and scalable fabric digitization. Presented research is entirely in line with the current trends of digitization and sustainability in the textile industry. It contributes to the advancement of efficient digital prototyping workflows and emphasizes the importance of reliable mechanical characterization for predictive garment modeling. Full article

Hybrid Experimental–Machine Learning Study on the Mechanical Behavior of Polymer Composite Structures Fabricated via FDM

This study explores the mechanical behavior of polymer and composite specimens fabricated using fused deposition modeling (FDM), focusing on three material configurations: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), carbon fiber-reinforced polyphthalamide (PPA/Cf), and a sandwich-structured composite. A systematic experimental plan was developed using the Box–Behnken design (BBD) to investigate the effects of material type (MT), infill pattern (IP), and printing direction (PD) on tensile and flexural strength. Experimental results showed that the PPA/Cf material with a “Cross” IP printed “Flat” yielded the highest mechanical performance, achieving a tensile strength of 75.8 MPa and a flexural strength of 102.3 MPa. In contrast, the lowest values were observed in ABS parts with a “Grid” pattern and “Upright” orientation, recording 37.8 MPa tensile and 49.5 MPa flexural strength. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results confirmed that all three factors significantly influenced both outputs (p < 0.001), with MT being the most dominant factor. Machine learning (ML) algorithms, Bayesian linear regression (BLR), and Gaussian process regression (GPR) were employed to predict mechanical performance. GPR achieved the best overall accuracy with R2 = 0.9935 and MAPE = 11.14% for tensile strength and R2 = 0.9925 and MAPE = 12.96% for flexural strength. Comparatively, the traditional BBD yielded slightly lower performance with MAPE = 13.02% and R2 = 0.9895 for tensile strength. Validation tests conducted on three unseen configurations clearly demonstrated the generalization capability of the models. Based on actual vs. predicted values, the GPR yielded the lowest average prediction errors, with MAPE values of 0.54% for tensile and 0.45% for flexural strength. In comparison, BLR achieved 0.79% and 0.60%, while BBD showed significantly higher errors at 1.76% and 1.32%, respectively. Full article

The growing demand for direct current transmission emphasizes the need for advanced insulation suitable for high-capacity, long-distance applications. Thermoplastics, especially polypropylene, offer several advantages over conventional materials like XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) and EPR (ethylene propylene rubber), including higher thermal stability, recyclability, and reduced space charge accumulation. However, due to the inherent rigidity and limited flexibility of PP, its mechanical aging becomes a critical factor in assessing its long-term reliability as a cable insulation. In this study, mechanical aging characteristics, specifically declines in tensile strength and elongation, were selected as key indicators of insulation aging. Accelerated aging tests were conducted at 90 °C, 110 °C, and 130 °C for up to 5000 h. The experimental data were fitted to exponential models to derive aging coefficients, which formed the basis for the proposed aging model and the ACI (aging condition index). The ACI enables quantitative assessment of the current insulation condition and estimation of the remaining lifetime until a predefined threshold (e.g., ACI = 0.5) is reached. These findings contribute to the development of condition-based maintenance strategies and long-term asset management for power cables, offering practical insights for improving the reliability of future power grid systems. This review critically examines the effects of moisture absorption on the mechanical and fatigue properties of natural fiber composites (NFCs), with a focus on tensile strength, elastic modulus, and long-term durability. Moisture uptake can cause reductions in tensile strength of up to 40% and in elastic modulus by 20–30% depending on fiber type, mass fraction (typically in the range of 30–60%), and surface treatments. The review highlights Ithat while surface modifications (e.g., alkaline and silane treatments) significantly mitigate moisture-induced degradation, their effectiveness is highly sensitive to the processing conditions. Additionally, hybridization strategies and optimized fiber orientations show promise in enhancing fatigue resistance under humid environments. Despite substantial progress, major challenges remain, including the lack of standardized testing protocols and the limited understanding of multiscale aging mechanisms. Future research directions include developing predictive models that couple moisture diffusion and mechanical deterioration, implementing advanced in situ monitoring of damage evolution, and exploring novel bio-based treatments. By addressing these gaps, NFCs can become more reliable and widely adopted as sustainable alternatives in structural applications. Full article

As 3D concrete printing emerges as a transformative construction method, its structural safety remains hindered by unresolved issues of mechanical anisotropy and interlayer defects. To address this, we systematically investigate the failure mechanisms and mechanical performance of basalt fiber-reinforced 3D-printed magnesite concrete. A total of 30 cube specimens (50 mm × 50 mm × 50 mm)—comprising three types (Corner, Stripe, and R-a-p)—were fabricated and tested under compressive and splitting tensile loading along three orthogonal directions using a 2000 kN electro-hydraulic testing machine. The results indicate that 3D-printed concrete exhibits significantly lower strength than cast-in-place concrete, which is attributed to weak interfacial bonds and interlayer pores. Notably, the R-a-p specimen’s Z-direction compressive strength is 38.7% lower than its Y-direction counterpart. To complement the mechanical tests, DIC, CT scanning, and SEM analyses were conducted to explore crack development, internal defect morphology, and microstructure. A finite element model based on the experimental data successfully reproduced the observed failure processes. This study not only enhances our understanding of anisotropic behavior in 3D-printed concrete but also offers practical insights for print-path optimization and sustainable structural design. Pedicle screw fixation is a common spinal surgery technique, but concerns remain about stability when screws are malpositioned. Traditional in vitro pull-out tests assess anchorage but lack physiological accuracy. This study examined the stability of correctly placed and intentionally malpositioned pedicle screws on forty vertebrae from five cadavers. Optimal screw paths were planned via CT scans and applied using 3D-printed guides. Four malposition types—medial, lateral, superior, and superior-lateral—were created by shifting the original trajectory. A custom setup applied three consecutive cycles of tensile and compressive load from 50 N to 200 N. Screw inclination under load was measured with a 3D optical system. The results showed increasing screw inclination with higher forces, reaching about 1° at 50 N and 2° at 100 N, similar in both load directions. Significant differences in inclination were only found at 100 N tensile load, where malpositioned screws showed a lower inclination. Overall, malpositioning had no major effect on screw loosening. These findings suggest that minor deviations in screw placement do not significantly compromise mechanical stability. Clinically, the main concern with malpositioning lies in the potential for injury to nearby structures rather than reduced screw fixation strength. Full article

In this study, a new fibre combination for an interlayer hybrid fibre-reinforced polymer laminate was investigated to achieve pseudo-ductile behaviour in tensile tests. The chosen high-strain fibre for this purpose was S-Glass, and the low-strain fibre was flax. These materials were chosen because of their relatively low environmental impact compared to carbon/carbon and carbon/glass hybrids. An analytical model was used to find an ideal combination of the two materials. With that model, the expected stress–strain relation could also be predicted analytically. The modelling was based on preliminary tensile tests of the two basic components investigated in this research: unidirectional laminates reinforced with either flax fibres or S-Glass fibres. Hybrid specimens were then designed, produced in a heat-assisted pressing process, and subjected to tensile tests. The strain measurement was performed using distributed fibre optic sensing. Ultimately, it was possible to obtain repeatable pseudo-ductile stress–strain behaviour with the chosen hybrid when the specimens were subjected to quasi-static uniaxial tension in the direction of the fibres. The intended damage-mode, consisting of a controlled delamination at the flax-fibre/glass-fibre interface after the flax fibres failed, followed by a load transfer to the glass fibre layers, was successfully achieved. The pseudo-ductile strain averaged 0.52% with a standard deviation of 0.09%, and the average load reserve after delamination was 145.5 MPa with a standard deviation of 48.5 MPa. The integrated fibre optic sensors allowed us to monitor and verify the damage process with increasing strain and load. Finally, the analytical model was compared to the measurements and was partially modified by neglecting the Weibull strength distribution of the high-strain material. Full article

Failure Mechanism and Structural Analysis of Chain Slings with Non-Standard Connections

This study investigates the mechanical behavior and failure characteristics of chain slings under standard and non-standard fastening methods. Through dimensional inspections, fracture tests, and finite element analysis, we identified critical factors influencing chain failure. Chains exhibiting over 10% diameter reduction or increased pitch exceeded discard criteria and showed significant strength loss. Fracture loads in aged chains dropped by more than 35% compared to standards. Structural analysis revealed that standard fastening (using master links) ensures uniform stress distribution and higher load capacity, whereas non-standard fastening (direct wrapping on eyebolts) caused stress concentration, reduced tensile capacity by over 15%, and led to localized failure near contact areas. These results validate the structural soundness of international standards (DIN EN 818-4, ISO 3056) and highlight the risks of improper fastening. Practical recommendations include strict adherence to standard fastening methods, avoidance of direct wrapping, and implementation of regular inspections. The findings emphasize the need for design considerations regarding fastening geometry and suggest further research into fatigue life prediction and contact condition optimization. Full article

In the present study, an L-shaped multi-walled structure of NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) was fabricated by using the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) method on a titanium substrate. The present study aims to investigate the fabricated structure for microstructure, macrostructure, and mechanical properties. The 40 layers of L-shaped structure were successfully fabricated at optimized parameters of wire feed speed at 6 m/min, travel speed at 12 mm/s, and voltage at 20 V. The macrographs demonstrated the continuous bonding among the layers with complete fusion. The microstructure in the area between the two middle layers has exhibited a mixture of columnar grains (both coarse and fine), interspersed with dendritic colonies. The microstructure in the topmost layers has exhibited finer colonial structures in relatively greater numbers. The microhardness (MH) test has shown the average values of 283.2 ± 3.67 HV and 371.1 ± 5.81 HV at the bottom and topmost layers, respectively. A tensile test was conducted for specimens extracted from deposition and build directions, which showed consistent mechanical behavior. For the deposition direction, the average ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) were obtained as 831 ± 22.91 MPa and 14.32 ± 0.55%, respectively, while the build direction has shown average UTS and EL values of 774 ± 6.56 MPa and 14.16 ± 0.21%, respectively. The elongation exceeding 10% in all samples suggests that the fabricated structure demonstrates properties comparable to those of wrought metal. Fractography of all tensile specimens has shown good ductility and toughness. Lastly, a differential scanning calorimetry test was carried out to assess the retention of shape memory effect for the fabricated structure. This work explores enhancing rear cabin suspension in vehicles using hydro-pneumatic shock absorbers to maintain the cabin position regardless of load and improve safety by mitigating oscillation impacts. Advanced solutions employ pneumatic elastic elements with automatic adjustment, addressing classic suspension disadvantages like variable cab position and natural frequency with load changes. The experimental analysis of reinforced rubber samples from the air socket material involved tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy. The tensile results showed a clear trend: weak reinforced samples (L, T) were ductile but had a lower strength, while the ones on the reinforcing direction (D_45, D_60) exhibited a significantly increased strength and stiffness, with D_60 being the strongest but least ductile. Stress–strain curves visually confirmed these mechanical behaviors. Crucially, SEM images of fracture surfaces consistently revealed widespread fiber pull out. This indicates that weak interfacial adhesion between the reinforcing fibers and the rubber matrix is a primary limiting factor for the composite′s overall strength. Full article
