Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a transformative technology across multiple industries, from aerospace to biomedical applications. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) into AM processes represents a paradigm shift toward intelligent, autonomous manufacturing systems. This comprehensive review synthesizes recent advances in AI/ML applications across the entire AM life cycle—from design optimization and process planning through in situ monitoring, closed-loop control, and post-process qualification. The analysis is organized by ISO/ASTM AM process families, including powder bed fusion (PBF), directed energy deposition (DED), material extrusion (MEX), vat photopolymerization (VP), binder jetting (BJ), material jetting (MJT), and sheet lamination (SL). For each process family, the review examines the specific AI/ML techniques employed, the data modalities utilized (thermal imaging, acoustic signals, in situ cameras, CT/NDE data), and the current state of deployment from research prototypes to industrial implementation. The analysis reveals that while significant progress has been made in single-stage ML applications such as defect detection and parameter optimization, truly integrated life cycle-wide AI-driven AM workflows remain largely aspirational. Key challenges are identified including data scarcity, model generalization across machines and materials, real-time control constraints, and certification requirements. Finally, future research directions are outlined toward autonomous AM systems enabled by physics-informed ML, digital twins, and hierarchical AI architectures. Full article

A sociophonetic study of coda /t/ in Australian Englishes spoken in Warrnambool and Mildura, Victoria, Australia, is described. A total of 2112 coda /t/ tokens produced by 61 adult L1 speakers was analyzed using auditory and acoustic profiling, focusing on four social factors (location, dialect, age and gender). The corpus included 33 Aboriginal English and 28 Mainstream Australian English speakers (24 male, 37 female) who fell into roughly equal age groups of <40 and >40 years. Overall, the “canonical” (aspirated) variant [th] was most frequently observed, followed by affricate [ts] and pre-glottalized [ˀt]; these variants accounted for 79% of all tokens. As for sociophonetic patterning, the best-fitting model included all four predictors (location, dialect, age and gender), with random intercepts for speaker and word. Dialect (Aboriginal or Mainstream Australian English) and age showed the strongest sociophonetic patterning, followed by limited effects for location. Variants were subsequently grouped into three superordinate categories—“breathy”, “canonical” (aspirated) and “glottal”—and a model was created including all four predictors and all two-way interactions between them, with random intercepts for speaker and word. This model showed that linking variants with broad voice qualities highlights even stronger sociophonetic patterning in some cases and is a promising direction for future research. The study contributes findings to three under-explored areas: consonant variability in Australian Englishes, fine-grained phonetic variation in Australian Aboriginal English, and analysis of speech from non-urban locations. Religiously diverse societies are often portrayed as marked by tensions between exclusive worldviews and aspirations toward inclusive and cohesive social relations. These tensions are particularly salient in religious contexts, where deeply held convictions about truth and moral order may coexist uneasily with ideals of tolerance and mutual recognition. A central question emerging from this dilemma is how religious worldviews shape evaluations of religious others in increasingly diverse societies. Using cross-sectional survey data among religious Christians and Muslims in the Netherlands, we analyse associations between religious exclusivism, religious and national belonging, bonding and bridging social capital, and outgroup attitudes, combining bivariate correlations, multivariate regression, and regression-based serial mediation analyses. Results show that religious exclusivism is a robust independent predictor of colder outgroup evaluations. In contrast, religious belonging and both bonding and bridging social capital are associated with warmer outgroup evaluations: bonding shows the stronger association. Mediation analyses indicate that religious exclusivism is indirectly associated with warmer outgroup evaluations through religious belonging, whereas bonding social capital does not mediate exclusivism in the direction of outgroup negativity. The findings challenge the view of bonding as primarily closing and suggest that supportive in-group embeddedness can coincide with more positive evaluations of religious others. Full article

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide, with most cases diagnosed at advanced stages. Conventional tissue biopsy is invasive, and low-dose CT (LDCT) screening—although effective—faces practical and logistical limitations. Liquid biopsy has emerged as a minimally invasive approach to capture tumor-derived material, including circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), cells, and extracellular vesicles (EVs). Among EVs, exosomes and their microRNA (miRNA) cargo offer a stable, disease-specific signal. Airway-proximal fluids such as bronchial aspirate and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) are in direct contact with the tumor microenvironment and may contain higher concentrations of tumor-derived exosomal miRNAs compared with blood. This review synthesizes the limited but promising evidence for exosomal miRNAs in bronchial aspirate and BALF as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in lung cancer, examines methodological and standardization challenges, and discusses potential integration into clinical workflows, with particular emphasis on Romania’s lung cancer epidemiology and healthcare context. While only two primary studies in the last five years have explored BALF exosomal miRNAs, these data justify further multicenter investigations aligned with MISEV2023 guidelines. Integrating airway-proximal exosomal miRNA analysis into bronchoscopy procedures could enhance diagnostic precision in resource-limited health systems and support the transition towards personalized thoracic oncology. Personalized Medicine has been a central aspiration of medical practice and has guided the direction of medical advances from ancient times to the present. This narrative review highlights some of the most significant past advances and present practices, discusses issues currently limiting Personalized Medicine and proposes activities necessary for Personalized Medicine to have a promising future. Throughout history, Personalized Medicine has developed along with the evolution of science and societal concepts. Notable advances paralleled the growth in what an individual person is and how experimental science can apply to medical practice. In the twentieth century, the study of inborn errors of metabolism and pharmacogenetics broadened the horizons of what Personalized Medicine could be. Presently, Personalized Medicine is challenged by different perspectives on its scope, by the various clinical scientific activities which can inadvertently or by misinterpretation serve to depersonalize medicine, and by the difficulties involved in integrating the massive amount of available scientific data to optimize medical practice centered on the individual. The conditions necessary for Personalized Medicine to have a promising future include developing broader, deeper, and more dynamic knowledge of disease processes, new methods to identify anomalous, singular disease-contributing characteristics in individuals, and improving data quality in research and medical practice. Advancing Personalized Medicine requires developing new perspectives for research, healthcare education, medical practice, and healthcare governance, as well as deploying medical advances at scale across populations. The ambition of policymakers to ‘raise aspirations’ among young people from disadvantaged backgrounds as a means for improving social mobility in Britain has been a mainstay of political rhetoric for the last three decades. Reports such as Higher Education in the Learning Society in 1997, Unleashing Aspiration in 2009, and Success as a Knowledge Economy in 2016 are all underpinned by an ideology of neoliberal meritocracy that has transcended political parties and governments since the Thatcher administration. Even those who lean more to the left of the Labour Party within contemporary Britain have perpetuated this narrative by reframing it as ‘working-class ambition’. This paper advances an alternative view which reconceptualises the way in which young people from non-privileged backgrounds experience and perceive the world, and their place within it. Drawing upon our work on Connected Belonging in 2025 and our research on the From the Centre to the Periphery project in 2025, we suggest that ‘hopeful optimism’ offers a more realistic lens through which to understand what is needed to address the ‘personal troubles and public issues’ that young people face. Unlike aspiration, which has an inherently individualistic and future-orientated framing, with value systems directed by dominant hegemonic notions of ‘success’ that are commonly positioned in economic terms, we recognise optimism as being a holistic and relational process that resides in the present as well as looks to the future. Optimism, grounded within principles of hope, allows young people the freedom to be and to dream; by celebrating who they are and their interconnectedness, it protects them from fears of failure; by reimaging what success might mean, it liberates them as creators. Background: Arytenoid cartilage dislocation (ACD) is a rare but clinically significant complication of endotracheal intubation that may be misdiagnosed as transient vocal cord paralysis. The potential role of prolonged surgical positioning in ACD remains underrecognized. Methods: A 63-year-old male developed left posterior ACD following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) performed in a steep Trendelenburg position for 3.5 h. Intubation was successfully achieved on the first attempt using a video laryngoscope with full glottic visualization and no apparent airway trauma. Postoperatively, the patient developed persistent dysphonia, dysphagia, aspiration, and tongue deviation. Initial flexible laryngoscopy suggested left vocal cord paralysis, whereas direct laryngoscopy on postoperative day 6 confirmed posterior arytenoid dislocation. Urgent closed reduction was performed, followed by structured voice therapy, which resulted in substantial functional recovery. Discussion: This case illustrates that ACD may occur despite technically optimal and atraumatic intubation and should be interpreted as reflecting a temporal association rather than a definitive causal relationship. Prolonged steep Trendelenburg positioning and extended operative duration may be considered potential contributing biomechanical factors, possibly mediated by venous congestion, mucosal edema, altered endotracheal tube dynamics, and cumulative shear stress on the cricoarytenoid joint. However, these mechanisms remain interpretive and hypothesis-generating. Conclusions: Prolonged steep Trendelenburg positioning and extended operative duration may represent possible contributing biomechanical factors in ACD, even in the setting of atraumatic intubation. Early laryngeal evaluation and timely reduction remain essential for optimal functional recovery. Full article

Hydrogen-enriched compressed natural gas (HCNG) is a promising transitional fuel for residential-scale distributed power, yet its impacts on direct-combustion thermoelectric generator (TEG) systems remain insufficiently quantified. In this study, a micro-scale TEG integrated with a commercially available self-aspirating household burner was experimentally investigated under thermal inputs of 700–2500 W and hydrogen blending ratios of 0–20 vol%, using open-loop water cooling to maximize heat rejection. The hot- and cold-side temperatures exhibited negligible variation with a hydrogen addition, and the maximum electrical output was essentially preserved across all blending ratios; at 2500 W the system delivered 75.8 W with a system efficiency of 3.03%. In contrast, hydrogen blending substantially reduced pollutant emissions: at 2500 W, CO decreased from 52.7 to 1 mg/m3 and CO2 from 6.73% to 5.36% as the hydrogen fraction increased from 0 to 20 vol%. Meanwhile, combustion stability improved, indicated by a reduced coefficient of variation (0.77% → 0.49%). These results demonstrate that up to 20 vol% hydrogen blending can achieve significant emissions mitigation without compromising TEG power performance, supporting HCNG-fueled TEGs as a practical option for residential backup power. Background/Objectives: Severe oral mucositis is widely viewed as a transient toxicity of antineoplastic therapy. Whether its long-term consequences differ between cancers that directly damage the upper aerodigestive tract (cancers of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx [CLOP]) and systemic hematologic malignancies is unknown. The aim of this study was to compare lifetime risks of mortality, dysphagia, malnutrition, respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease in propensity-score-matched survivors of CLOP cancer versus leukemia with and without a history of ulcerative oral mucositis. Methods: Population-based retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX US Collaborative Network (90 healthcare organizations, >110 million patients). We identified 80,526 adults with a personal history of CLOP cancer (ICD-10-CM Z85.81) and 43,684 with leukemia (Z85.6) from 2005 to 2024. Cohorts were stratified by presence/absence of severe oral mucositis (K12.31 or K12.33 at any time). Separate 1:1 propensity-score matching was performed within each cancer type on age, sex, race/ethnicity, hypertension, diabetes, BMI, ECOG status, and external causes of morbidity. Exposures included documented severe (ulcerative) oral mucositis. Main outcomes and measures were all-cause mortality and incident dysphagia, malnutrition, respiratory disease (J00–J99), influenza/pneumonia (J09–J18), and circulatory disease (I00–I99) after the index date. Results: After 1:1 matching, 4181 CLOP patients with mucositis were compared with 4181 without, and 2508 leukemia patients with mucositis were compared with 2508 without. In CLOP survivors, mucositis was associated with markedly higher lifetime mortality (adjusted HR 1.94, 95% CI 1.87–2.01), dysphagia (HR 3.42, 95% CI 3.28–3.57), malnutrition (HR 2.81, 95% CI 2.66–2.97), any respiratory disease (HR 1.68, 95% CI 1.63–1.73), and influenza/pneumonia (HR 1.79, 95% CI 1.72–1.86). In leukemia survivors, mucositis conferred only modest or null excess risk (mortality HR 1.12, 95% CI 1.05–1.19; dysphagia HR 1.18, 95% CI 1.07–1.30; malnutrition HR 1.24, 95% CI 1.12–1.37; any respiratory disease HR 1.09, 95% CI 1.03–1.15). Conclusions and Relevance: Severe oral mucositis is a powerful, durable prognostic determinant in cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract, where it identifies patients associated with elevated lifelong risk of swallowing dysfunction, aspiration-related lung disease, malnutrition, and premature death. The markedly attenuated effect in leukemia survivors suggests that direct high-dose radiation-induced structural damage to the pharynx and oral cavity—rather than systemic immunosuppression or chemotherapy intensity alone—is the dominant mechanism. This study addresses the problem of efficient utilization of aspiration dust (AD) generated during crushing of high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFeCr). To solve this issue, a briquetting technology was proposed, involving aspiration dust blended with dry gas-cleaning dust (20 wt.% as filler) and an organic polymer binder (3 wt.%). The produced briquettes demonstrated high mechanical strength (average 195 kg per briquette in splitting strength and 98% drop resistance), ensuring maximum integrity during transportation and handling. Pilot-industrial remelting of 35 tons of briquettes in a 1.8 MVA direct current electric arc furnace (DC EAF) confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed technology for HCFeCr production. Chromium recovery into the alloy reached 94%, which is 3–4% higher compared to remelting of loose dust. The specific electric energy consumption was 1600 kWh/t, representing a 29% reduction compared to loose dust processing. The produced metal met commercial grades FeCr800–FeCr900 specifications. Additional advantages included elimination of dust formation, reduction in fines generation during crushing of the final metal to 15%, and improved environmental performance. The developed technology represents an economically and environmentally viable solution for comprehensive recycling of ferroalloy dust waste. Full article

The first two decades of the twentieth century saw an unprecedented surge in scientific and technological experiments directed at the physical transformation of the human body. In Bolshevik Russia of the 1920s, science fiction and scientific and technological experiments created a nexus. The science fiction of Aleksandr Beliaev (1884–1942) turned experiments into adventure plots. Beliaev’s views on scientific experiments were informed not only by Bolshevik science but also by late-nineteenth-century pre-Revolutionary scientific theories. Nikolai Fedorov’s visionary futurity known as “Philosophy of the Common Task” bridged pre-Revolutionary utopian aspirations with the speculative thought of the 1920s across science, literature and art. My aim is to identify and analyse both intersections and differences in Beliaev’s and Fedorov’s visions of futurity in relation to body transformations in two of Beliaev’s most important yet understudied novels of the 1920s, The Amphibian Man and Professor Dowell’s Head. My approach is both synchronic and diachronic. I address features of transhumanist and posthumanist thought in Beliaev’s narratives that involve experiments in assembling hybridised human–animal, interhuman and human–machine organisms. I position Beliaev’s writing within the speculative discourse that was informed by Fedorovian aspirational futurity as well as by scientific and medical experiments involving reanimation and restoration of humans and animals. This narrative review explores the intricate dynamics of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), a condition marked by an excessive growth of bacteria in the small intestine. We delve into the multifaceted etiology of SIBO, including its associations with gastrointestinal disorders, motility issues, and alterations in gut architecture. The review examines current diagnostic methodologies, emphasizing the distinctions between breath testing and direct aspiration techniques. Furthermore, we assess the various treatment approaches, ranging from antibiotics and dietary modifications to emerging therapeutic options. By synthesizing the latest research findings, we aim to enhance understanding of SIBO’s implications for gut health and provide insights into effective management strategies. Full article

Problem-Solving Skills and Career Aspirations: The Role of Identity Acquisition and Self-Understanding in Italian Students

Background/Objectives: Adolescence is a critical developmental period in which individuals are required to orient themselves toward the future and construct a coherent life plan, including educational and career aspirations. Future orientation is closely linked to identity development and self-understanding, which allow adolescents to integrate past, present, and anticipated future selves. Among the personal resources supporting this process, problem-solving skills play a key role by enabling effective coping with challenges and informed, goal-directed decision-making. This study examined the association between problem-solving skills and adolescents’ aspirations for an ideal occupation, and tested whether this relationship was mediated by identity acquisition and self-understanding, with attention to gender differences. Methods: A quantitative study design was adopted. Participants were 2443 Italian adolescents (aged 15–19 years) attending upper secondary schools. They completed self-report measures assessing perceived problem-solving skills, identity acquisition, self-understanding, and aspiration for an ideal occupation. Two multigroup mediation models were tested using structural equation modeling, examining identity acquisition and self-understanding as mediators and comparing pathways across genders. Results: Problem-solving skills were indirectly associated with stronger aspirations toward an ideal occupation through identity-related processes. Identity acquisition mediated this association only among females, whereas self-understanding emerged as a significant mediator for both females and males, with partial mediation among females and full mediation among males. Conclusions: Overall, although constrained by the cross-sectional design, the findings are consistent with the notion that problem-solving skills contribute to future-oriented career aspirations chiefly by promoting identity coherence and self-clarity. These findings highlight the importance of integrating problem-solving training with identity-focused interventions in educational and career guidance programs, while considering gender-specific developmental pathways. Developing an engineering identity is critical for supporting students’ engineering career pathways. Yet, migratory adolescents are often not afforded engineering experiences to support that identity formation. Early experiences in math and science often serve as gateways to engineering careers; examining students’ attitudes and beliefs in these subjects is essential to understanding identity formation. This study took an exploratory approach to examine how migratory adolescents’ math and science attitudes and beliefs, specifically their interest, recognition, and performance beliefs, contributed to developing an aspirational engineering identity. Mediation analysis was used to explore how math and science interest, recognition, and performance beliefs shaped the engineering identity formation of 227 migratory adolescents. Results show that math and science interest served as both a direct pathway to engineering identity and as the essential mediator linking performance beliefs and recognition to engineering identity development. Performance beliefs and recognition operated as interchangeable predictor variables but supported engineering identity through their influence on students’ interest in math and science. Multiple pathways emerged for fostering an engineering identity among migratory adolescents, rather than a singular path. These findings highlight the importance of cultivating math and science interest as a key mechanism for supporting engineering aspirations and informing future educational interventions for this underrepresented group. The increasing demand for reliability and safety in naval and offshore structures has accelerated the adoption of advanced Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques. Among them, acoustic methods—ranging from passive acoustic emission monitoring to guided ultrasonic waves—have demonstrated exceptional potential for early detection, localization, and characterization of structural damage under harsh marine environments. This review provides a comprehensive and critical synthesis of the state-of-the-art in acoustic-based SHM applied to ships, submarines, offshore platforms, and floating renewable energy systems. Special emphasis is placed on the comparative performance of different acoustic techniques, their integration with numerical modeling and data-driven methods, and their suitability for real-world deployment considering hydrodynamic, operational, and environmental constraints. By bridging current achievements with future challenges, the paper highlights research gaps and outlines key directions to accelerate the transition of acoustic SHM technologies from laboratory studies to widespread industrial applications. This review aspires to serve as a reference work for both academic researchers and practitioners, consolidating knowledge and inspiring innovation in the field. Full article
