Background: We recently reported sex-dependent impairment in cognitive functions in male and female mice exposed for 24 h, 48 h or 15 days to 2G hypergravity (HG). Methods: In the present study, we investigated brain functional correlates by analyzing synaptic activity and plasticity in the CA1 area of the hippocampus in both genders of mice previously exposed to 2G for the same duration. This was assessed by electrophysiological extracellular recordings in ex vivo slice preparations. Results: Basal synaptic transmission and glutamate release were unchanged regardless of HG duration. However, plasticity was altered in a sex- and time-specific manner. In males, long-term potentiation (LTP) induced by strong high-frequency stimulation and NMDA receptor (NMDAr) activation was reduced by 26% after 24 h of exposure but recovered at later timepoints. This deficit was reversed by D-serine or glycine, suggesting decreased activation at the NMDAr co-agonist site. In females, LTP deficits (23%) were found only after 15 days following mild theta burst stimulation and were not reversed by D-serine. Long-term depression (LTD) was unaffected in both sexes. Conclusions: This study highlights, for the first time, sex-dependent divergence in the CA1 hippocampal plasticity timeline following 2G exposure. The synaptic changes depend on exposure duration and the stimulation protocol and could underlie the previously observed cognitive deficits. Full article

Fish coloration plays an important role in reproduction and camouflage, yet capturing color variation under field conditions remains challenging. We present a standardized, semi-automated protocol for measuring body coloration in the popular model fish threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Individuals are photographed in a controlled light box within minutes of capture, and color is sampled from eight anatomically defined standard sites in human-perception-based CIELAB space. Analyses combine univariate color metrics, multivariate statistics, and the ΔE* perceptual difference index to detect subtle shifts in hue and brightness. Validation on pre-spawning fish shows the method reliably distinguishes males and females well before full breeding colors develop. Although it currently omits ultraviolet signals and fine-scale patterning, the approach scales efficiently to large sample sizes and varying lighting conditions, making it well suited for population-level surveys of camouflage dynamics, sexual dimorphism, and environmental influences on coloration in sticklebacks. Background/Objectives: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the predominant form of liver cancer and currently is the second-leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally. Current front-line systemic therapies for advanced HCC offer only modest improvements in patient overall survival. HCC is a sexually dimorphic disease, and cancer progression is driven in part by AR activity. Here, we present novel niclosamide pro-drugs for use in advanced HCC based upon niclosamide’s known anti-AR activity and additional anti-cancer pathway efficacy. Methods: Niclosamide analogs were evaluated for their impacts on the AR protein in two HCC cell lines with different AR phenotypes. Amino acid conjugates of niclosamide were developed, and pharmacokinetic (PK) analyses were conducted to determine improvements in clearance and oral exposure. Finally, niclosamide analogs and amino acid conjugates were evaluated in an in vivo model of HCC. Results: Niclosamide analogs maintained anti-AR properties in HCC. Valine-conjugated niclosamide showed improved oral exposure, positioning it as a potential therapeutic in advanced HCC. Conclusions: Valine–niclosamide improves upon niclosamide’s poor solubility and oral bioavailability, increasing its utility for a variety of therapeutic uses. Further study of valine–niclosamide in advanced HCC and in other cancers or diseases is warranted. Full article

This review aimed to be comprehensive and to critically analyze the factors that may affect the macronutrient and energy content of breast milk. Systematic reviews were prioritized, even though other types of literature reviews on the subject, as well as studies not included in these reviews, were included. Reported factors that potentially affect the macronutrient and energy content of breast milk comprise: maternal factors, such as age, nutritional status, dietary intake, smoking habits, lactation stage, circadian rhythmicity, and the use of galactagogues; obstetrical factors, such as parity, preterm delivery, multiple pregnancies, labor and delivery, and pregnancy morbidities including intrauterine growth restriction, hypertensive disorders, and gestational diabetes mellitus; and newborn factors, including sexual dimorphism, and anthropometry at birth. Some factors underwent a less robust assessment, while others underwent a more in-depth analysis. For example, the milk from overweight and obese mothers has been reported to be richer in energy and fat. A progressive decrease in protein content and an increase in fat content was described over time during lactation. The milk from mothers with hypertensive disorders may have a higher protein content. Higher protein and energy content has been found in early milk from mothers who delivered prematurely. Full article

The parasitoid wasp Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris is a key koinobiont solitary endoparasitoid of the invasive agricultural pest Tuta absoluta. This study investigates both the morphological and molecular foundations of sex-specific olfactory differentiation in this species. Morphological analysis revealed that males possess significantly longer antennae (2880.8 ± 20.36 μm) than females (2137.23 ± 43.47 μm), demonstrating pronounced sexual dimorphism. Scanning electron microscopy identified similar sensilla types on both sexes, but differences existed in the length and diameter of specific sensilla. Transcriptomic analysis of adult antennae uncovered molecular differentiation, identifying 11 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and 20 odorant receptors (ORs), with 27 chemosensory genes upregulated in females and 4 enriched in males. Integrating morphological and molecular evidence demonstrates complementary sexual specialization in the olfactory apparatus of D. gelechiidivoris. Linking these findings to the potential functions of different sensilla types, as discussed in the context of prior research, provides crucial insights into the sex-specific use of volatile cues. These findings provide critical insights into the use of volatile signals in this highly relevant species for biological control targeting T. absoluta. Full article

Prolactin is a hormone with demonstrated roles in the brain, including neurogenesis, neuroprotection, learning, stress response or memory consolidation. To determine the prolactin expression in the rat hippocampus during aging and to resolve some controversies related to the presence of prolactin in the hippocampus, the aim of this study was to analyze whether changes occur in the expression of prolactin during different stages of life. To determine this, we designed an experimental study in which we analyzed the expression and location of prolactin in the rat hippocampus, Ammon’s horn and Dentate Gyrus, during different stages of life (prepubertal, postpubertal, young adult, adult and old) and checked if there are differences related to sex. Overall, the results obtained show that prolactin is present in the rat hippocampus and that prolactin is synthesized, as deduced from the findings obtained via ELISA, immunohistochemistry, qPCR and in situ hybridization. After analyzing the correlation between serum and hippocampal prolactin levels and comparing the amounts of Prl mRNA and the hormone, the results obtained suggest that hippocampal prolactin has a dual origin: local synthesis of the hormone and its passage from the blood. On the other hand, the amounts of prolactin and its mRNA in the hippocampus vary with sex and age, suggesting the existence of age-related sexual dimorphism. The results obtained suggest that hippocampal aging is related to a decrease in the hippocampal prolactin system, which helps to better understand brain aging. Full article

Although cranial growth has been extensively explored, forensic and biological anthropology lack a formal incorporation of how cranial growth processes impact the adult phenotype and downstream biological profile estimations. Objectives: This research uses an ontogenetic framework to identify when interlandmark distances (ILDs) stabilize during growth to reach adult levels of variation and to evaluate patterns of cranial sexual size dimorphism. Methods: Multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) were conducted on standardized cranial ILDs for 595 individuals from the Subadult Virtual Anthropology Database (SVAD) and the Forensic Data Bank (FDB) aged between birth and 25 years. Cross-Validated R-squared (CVRSq) values evaluated ILD variation explained by age while knot placements identified meaningful changes in ILD growth trajectories. Results: Results reveal the ages at which males and females reach craniometric maturity across splanchnocranium, neurocranium, basicranium and cross-regional ILDs. Changes in growth patterns observed here largely align with growth milestones of integrated soft tissue and skeletal structures as well as developmental milestones like puberty. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the variability in growth by sex and cranial region and move forensic anthropologists towards recognizing cranial growth as a mosaic, continuous process with overlap between subadults and adults rather than consistently approaching subadult and adult research separately. The arboreal rodent Oecomys catherinae, which has a wide geographic distribution across Brazilian biomes, provides a model for investigating environmental influences on morphological variation. We assessed craniodental differences between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes, as well as along latitudinal gradients, using 45 specimens from 18 localities. Linear morphometric analyses (21 measurements) revealed no significant sexual dimorphism, allowing for pooled analyses. Principal Component Discriminant Analysis (DAPC) confirmed significant morphological divergence between biomes (72% accuracy, p < 0.01). We identified bony palate length (BPL) as the most discriminating variable, with higher values in the Atlantic Forest, suggesting a possible dietary adaptation in response to ecological pressures. Latitudinal effects were modest (adjusted R2 = 0.05) although significant (F1,43 = 3.63; p = 0.03), with southern populations exhibiting larger cranial dimensions than northern ones. We conclude that biome type and latitude played important roles in shaping cranial morphology in O. catherinae populations. Full article

Background: Sexual dimorphism in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) is evident in external features, but skeletal differences remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine the skull, scapula, and pelvis using traditional morphometric methods to assess sex-related variation. Methods: Eleven skeletal specimens were analyzed, including nine skulls, eleven pelves, and eighteen scapulae. Linear measurements were obtained using measuring tape and calipers. Statistical analyses included Mann–Whitney U tests, Pearson’s correlation, and logistic regression for sex prediction. Results: No significant differences were found in skull measurements between sexes. However, the pelvis and scapula exhibited notable variation. Significant pelvic parameters included pelvic girdle length (p = 0.024), symphysis length (p = 0.012), and pubis shaft perimeter (p = 0.048). Scapular differences were observed in diagonal breadth, mediolateral width, and spine length. Logistic regression using pelvic measurements yielded 100% accuracy for female classification and 66.67% for males, with an overall prediction accuracy of 90.91%. Conclusions: The pelvis demonstrated the highest reliability for sex determination. These findings enhance the anatomical understanding of Asian elephants and support applications in conservation, forensic science, and population studies. Future research with larger sample sizes and advanced imaging may improve the precision of morphometric sex prediction models. Full article

Geometric morphometrics is performed on different species in different contexts. Here, the aim was to investigate morphological differences in the head of the Sanmartinero Creole bovine to examine head shape variations between sexes using geometric morphometric methods. A sample of cranial pictures of 43 animals (13 males and 30 females) was obtained, and form (size + shape) was studied by means of geometric morphometric techniques using a set of 14 landmarks. This approach eliminated potential dietary effects, ensuring that the observed shape variations were primarily due to intrinsic morphological differences. Sexual dimorphism was found in form (for both size and shape) of the head of the Sanmartinero Creole bovine breed. Males had significantly larger heads based on centroid size (U = 714, p = 0.0004), confirming true sexual size differences, and Principal Component Analysis revealed overlapping head shapes with sexual dimorphism concentrated at midline sagittal landmarks (between the most rostral and caudal orbit points) and paired lateral points, indicating that males have broader and longer heads. The two evaluated characters (head size and shape) are of special interest for the conservation of the breed, especially in those cases whose objectives are to maintain the uniqueness, distinctiveness, and uniformity of the populations. The Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) has rapidly expanded across the Mediterranean, raising concerns over its ecological and economic impacts. This study examines the morphometric characteristics and environmental influences on C. sapidus populations in the Palud-Palù swamp (western Istrian coast) from 2022 to 2024. A total of 203 specimens were analyzed for carapace width, length, depth, and body mass, alongside monthly measurements of temperature, salinity, oxygen saturation, and pH. Statistical analyses (t-tests, ANOVA, PCA, and RDA) revealed pronounced sexual dimorphism, with males consistently larger than females. Interannual differences in size distribution showed larger individuals in 2022, followed by a decline in 2023 and 2024, likely due to environmental stressors (e.g., salinity, temperature, hypoxia) and increased anthropogenic pressures (e.g., trapping and illegal harvesting). RDA identified temperature, oxygen saturation, and pH as key abiotic drivers of morphometric variation. These findings suggest that while C. sapidus demonstrates physiological plasticity, enabling its persistence in estuarine environments, its growth and invasive potential may be constrained under extreme or suboptimal local conditions. This study highlights the importance of long-term monitoring and integrated management to mitigate ecological disruption in sensitive coastal ecosystems. Full article

Sexual dimorphism is prevalent among animals, influencing both functional morphological traits and behavioral performances. In this study, we investigated the sexual differences in the morphological parameters of Kaloula borealis (Anura, Microhylidae) during the breeding season using 48 specimens. Our results reveal that among the 16 external morphological traits, females had significantly larger snout-vent length and eye diameter than males. The former presumably contributes to enhancing fertility, while the latter is associated with larger body size. Males exhibited significantly greater head width and thigh width than females, which may be related to accessing a wider range of food sources and enhancing their locomotor ability, respectively. Among the 32 appendicular muscles, 10 displayed significant sexual dimorphism in dry mass, suggesting divergent reproductive strategies between the sexes. Among the eight internal organs analyzed, males possessed significantly heavier hearts and lungs than females, which is likely an adaptation to higher metabolic demands and calling behavior. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that sex-specific differences in external morphology, muscle mass, and internal organ mass reflect distinct ecological and reproductive adaptations between males and females and contribute to the phenotypic diversities in Anura. The pelvis is the most dimorphic part of the human skeleton, primarily because of its involvement in the birth process. Many sexually dimorphic traits are concentrated in the coxal bones, which form the larger part of the birth canal. The present study aimed to assess the sex differences in coxal bone size and to develop machine learning (ML) models for sex estimation based on coxal bone measurements. The sample included abdominal computed tomography scans of 276 adult Bulgarians. Three-dimensional models of the pelves were generated using InVesalius. The three-dimensional coordinates of 34 landmarks located on the right and left coxal bones were collected in MeshLab. Based on the landmark coordinates, various measurements characterizing the coxal bones were calculated. The coxal bone dimensions were tested for significant differences with respect to sex, age, and laterality. Support Vector Machines and logistic regression were employed to train models for sex estimation. The results demonstrate strong sexual dimorphism in coxal bone dimensions along with some bilateral and age-related differences. The trained ML models classify male and female bones with very high accuracy, ranging between 95% and 100%. Full article

Two new miniature tetra species of the genus Priocharax Weitzman and Vari 1987 are described, raising the known species diversity to twelve. Priocharax is characterized by several paedomorphic features such as reductions in the laterosensory system, number of fin rays, ossification of parts of the skull and the presence of a larval rayless pectoral fin in adults. The species described are found in the Rio Purus and Solimões drainages, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil and are diagnosed among themselves and from other species of the genus by the combination of meristic and osteological characters. Furthermore, the two species differ in overall body shape, with one having a deeper body and the other a more streamlined form. Sexual dimorphism was observed in both species. Molecular species delimitation analyses support the distinctiveness of these species. Similarly to Priocharax britzi and to P. conwayi, the specimens analyzed here were collected within and around protected areas, highlighting the importance of these areas for conservation and biodiversity knowledge. Preterm birth (PTB) refers to a labor before 37 gestational weeks. This is a major global contributor to neonatal morbidity and mortality. Although fetal sex is frequently treated as a confounding variable in PTB research, relatively few studies have conducted sex-stratified analyses to investigate how male and female fetuses may respond differently to various intrauterine exposures. This represents an underexplored area with important implications for understanding fetal sexual dimorphism-specific vulnerability to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Understanding the role of fetal sex differences in the pathophysiology of preterm birth (PTB) regarding processes such as inflammation, placental dysfunction, and oxidative stress is crucial. These delicate processes are tightly interrelated, but also independently contribute to pregnancy complications. Recognizing fetal sex as a biological variable for such processes is essential for improving mechanistic insight, providing refined predictive models. Full article
