This study focuses on cultural and urban development policies under China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, exploring the content and semantic structure of discussions on the “East Asian Cultural Capital” project on the Weibo platform. It analyzes how national cultural development policies are reflected in the discourse system related to the “East Asian Cultural Capital” on social media and emphasizes the guiding role of policies in the dissemination of online culture. When China announced the 14th Five-Year Plan in 2021, the strategic direction and policy framework for cultural development over the five-year period from 2021 to 2025 were clearly outlined. This study employs text mining and semantic network analysis methods to analyze user-generated content on Weibo from 2023 to 2024, aiming to understand public perception and discourse trends. Word frequency and TF-IDF analyses identify key terms and issues, while centrality and CONCOR clustering analyses reveal the semantic structure and discourse communities. MR-QAP regression is employed to compare network changes across the two years. Findings highlight that urban cultural development, heritage preservation, and regional exchange are central themes, with digital media, cultural branding, trilateral cooperation, and cultural–economic integration emerging as key factors in regional collaboration. Rural regions face significant barriers to adopting IoT technologies, due to limited connectivity, energy constraints, and poor technical infrastructure. While urban environments benefit from advanced digital systems and cloud services, rural areas often lack the necessary conditions to deploy and evaluate secure and autonomous IoT solutions. To help overcome this gap, this paper presents the Smart Rural IoT Lab, a modular and reproducible testbed designed to replicate the deployment conditions in rural areas using open-source tools and affordable hardware. The laboratory integrates long-range and short-range communication technologies in six experimental scenarios, implementing protocols such as MQTT, HTTP, UDP, and CoAP. These scenarios simulate realistic rural use cases, including environmental monitoring, livestock tracking, infrastructure access control, and heritage site protection. Local data processing is achieved through containerized services like Node-RED, InfluxDB, MongoDB, and Grafana, ensuring complete autonomy, without dependence on cloud services. A key contribution of the laboratory is the generation of structured datasets from real network traffic captured with Tcpdump and preprocessed using Zeek. Unlike simulated datasets, the collected data reflect communication patterns generated from real devices. Although the current dataset only includes benign traffic, the platform is prepared for future incorporation of adversarial scenarios (spoofing, DoS) to support AI-based cybersecurity research. While experiments were conducted in an indoor controlled environment, the testbed architecture is portable and suitable for future outdoor deployment. The Smart Rural IoT Lab addresses a critical gap in current research infrastructure, providing a realistic and flexible foundation for developing secure, cloud-independent IoT solutions, contributing to the digital transformation of rural regions. As the cradle of Jiangnan culture, Suzhou is home to a dense concentration of historical architectural heritage that is currently facing existential threats from rapid urbanization. This study aims to develop a spatial heritage corridor network for conservation and sustainable utilization. Using kernel density estimation, this study identifies 15 kernel density groups, along with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), to pinpoint clusters of historical architectural heritage and assess the involved resistance factors. Current Effective Conductance (CEC) theory is further applied to model spatial flow relationships among heritage nodes, leading to the delineation of 27 heritage corridors and revealing a spatial structure characterized by one primary core, one secondary core, and multiple peripheral zones. Based on 15 source points, six cultural relics-themed routes are proposed—three land-based and three waterfront routes—connecting historical sites, towns, and ecological areas. The study further recommends a resource management strategy centered on departmental collaboration, digital integration, and community co-governance. By integrating historical architectural types, settlement forms, and ecological patterns, the research builds a multi-scale narrative and experience system that addresses fragmentation while improving coordination and sustainability. This framework delivers practical advice on heritage conservation and cultural tourism development in Suzhou and the broader Jiangnan region. Full article

This research aims to investigate the Italian architectural heritage in Brazil through the analysis of the ‘Santa Casa de Misericórdia’ hospital in São Carlos, in the state of São Paulo. As part of the KNOW.IT national project, the work aims to recover and digitally enhance Italian heritage abroad from the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings analysed were either designed or built by Italian architects who emigrated to South America or constructed using materials and techniques typical of Italian architecture of those years. The hospital, designed by the Italian architect Samuele Malfatti in 1891, was chosen for its historical value and its role in the urban context of the city of São Carlos, which, moreover, continues to perform its function even today. The study aims to create a digital archive with 3D models and two-dimensional graphical drawings. The methodology includes historical analysis, photogrammetric survey, and digital modelling using Agisoft Metashape and 3DF Zephyr software. A total of 636 images were processed, with the maximum resolution achieved in the models being 3526 × 2097 pixels. The results highlight the influence of Italian architecture on late 19th-century São Carlos and promote its virtual accessibility and wide-ranging knowledge. Full article

The integration of shared autonomous vehicles into historic urban areas presents both opportunities and challenges. In heritage-rich environments like very old Asian (such as Suzhou old town, which serves as a use case example) or European (especially Mediterranean coastal cities) areas—characterized by narrow alleys, dense development, and sensitive cultural landscapes—shared autonomous vehicle adoption raises critical spatial and social questions. This study employs a qualitative, user-centered approach based on the ripple model to examine residents’ perceptions across four dimensions: residential patterns, parking land use, regional accessibility, and street-level infrastructure. Semi-structured interviews with 27 participants reveal five key findings: (1) public trust depends on transparent decision-making and safety guarantees; (2) shared autonomous vehicles may reshape generational residential clustering; (3) the short-term parking demand remains stable, but the long-term reuse of space is feasible; (4) shared autonomous vehicles could enhance accessibility in historic cores; (5) transport systems may evolve toward intelligent, human-centered designs. Based on these insights, the study proposes three strategies: (1) transparent risk assessment using explainable artificial intelligence and digital twins; (2) polycentric development to diversify land use; (3) hierarchical street retrofitting to balance mobility and preservation. While this study is limited by its qualitative scope and absence of simulation, it offers a framework for culturally sensitive, small-scale interventions supporting sustainable mobility transitions in historic urban contexts. The rapid urbanization and technological advancements in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have placed its modern architectural heritage from the 1970s and 1980s at increasing risk of being unrecognized and lost, particularly in Dubai following the discovery of oil. This research addresses the critical need for the documentation and heritage representation of Dubai’s modern heritage, a city undergoing rapid transformation within a globalized urban landscape. Focusing on the Nasser Rashid Lootah Building (Toyota Building), an iconic early 1970s residential high-rise representing the modern architecture of Dubai and a significant milestone in its architectural history, this study explores a replicable and cost-effective approach to digitally document and conserve urban heritage under threat. The existing building was meticulously documented and analyzed to highlight its enduring value within the fast-changing urban fabric. Through the innovative combination of drone photography, ground-based photography, and HBIM, a high-resolution 3D model and a semantically organized HBIM prototype were generated. This research demonstrates a replicable measure for identifying architectural values, understanding modernist design typologies, and raising local community awareness about Dubai’s modern heritage. Ultimately, this study contributes toward developing recognition criteria and guiding efforts in documenting modern high-rise buildings as vital heritage worthy of recognition, documentation, and future conservation in the UAE. This study aims to photograph, design, and digitally document the surviving residential buildings on the island of Halki (Heybeliada), within the Princes’ Islands. This documentation focuses on the architectural, urban, and historical aspects of Halki, highlighting the significant material evidence of the Greek social and economic presence. It also examines the urban cultural heritage as depicted in Turkish literature of that period to understand how Turkish writers perceived and presented Halki, referencing the Princes’ Islands only for background context. The methodology includes the collection of material from residents through bibliographic and field research conducted on Halki. Based on these findings, a mobile augmented reality (AR) application was developed using the TaleBlazer platform, designed specifically for use on Halki. The application provides a virtual tour with multimedia-supported thematic layers of architectural and historical information. Its usability and learnability were evaluated using a questionnaire completed by students. The results showed high usability, user satisfaction, and perceived value of learning, with the majority of results close to a median score of 4 out of 5. The students identified the occurrence of immersive experience, ease of use, and the emotional stimulation created by the integration of spatial storytelling and multimedia. This paper also shows how the convergence of cultural content (history, architecture, and literature) can enhance interpretations and experiences with mobile AR technologies. Full article

This paper outlines a methodology for creating an educational and informative communication system for non-specialised audiences in order to preserve and pass on the heritage of ideas and practices adopted in the medieval political and administrative sphere. Through the combined use of digital technologies (such as GISs, 3D modelling and virtual tours), historical sources can potentially reveal how political and administrative aspects affected different areas within the medieval city, not just the main seats of power. Bologna, a prestigious medieval university metropolis, is chosen as a case study because of the remarkable wealth of documentation in its archives from the city’s political culture in the Middle Ages. Written historical sources, including documentary and narrative texts, are among the primary tools employed in the study of European medieval urban communities in general. Documentary sources help us understand and reconstruct the complexities of civic administration, urban policies and the economy, as well as how citizens experience them daily. The involvement of citizens in the political and administrative life of late medieval cities is explored through the management and digital processing of historical documentation. Digital humanities tools can facilitate this analysis, offering a perspective that sheds light on the formation of the pre-modern state. Although digital databases and repositories have significantly contributed to preserving and digitally archiving historical sources, these are often aimed exclusively at the academic level and remain underutilised as privileged didactic and educational tools for a broad audience. The heritage of public works is composed of networks that are strongly linked to the territory where they are built. With the aim of deepening our knowledge of the appearance and subsequent development of the transport and supply systems in Madrid, we present a study of the main hydraulic works, bridges and railway stations. Based on historical and technological documentation, works and networks are analysed and georeferenced in order to relate their traces and evolution to the city. These built elements define recognisable physical and cultural traces in the form and identity of the city. The documentation and technological and social analysis work was completed with a dissemination and heritage education process. The results show that the physiographic and lithological reality of Madrid, characterised by its intense link with water, has determined the configuration of the urban network and the expansion of the city. Bridges span obstacles and set milestones. Stations are spaces for exchange and connection. The water supply network feeds the urban grid. The city changes, but the traces remain. Urban growth has smoothed, absorbed or hidden the original relief and watercourses, but they are still present in public works and even in the collective memory of the citizens through the force of their cultural and social values. Balancing modernisation with cultural heritage preservation remains a core challenge in integrating smart technologies into historic cities. This study conducts a systematic literature review and qualitative content analysis of 42 peer-reviewed articles across the fields of urban planning, smart technologies, heritage conservation, and place making to address this issue. Through thematic coding using MAXQDA (2020), it identifies recurring themes and patterns that inform the development of a conceptual framework. The findings reveal that cultural heritage sites contribute to smart city planning by reinforcing place-based identity, enabling participatory governance, and supporting culturally sustainable innovation. The study also addresses a critical gap in existing smart city frameworks, which often fail to systematically incorporate cultural values and local identity in their planning logic. The proposed framework integrates cultural heritage with smart city development through place making and provides structured guidance for policymakers and urban planners by outlining four key areas—digital infrastructure, community participation, spatial design, and heritage preservation—while also acknowledging the challenges of applying it across diverse socio-cultural and technological contexts. In the wake of the Holocaust and the post-war reconstruction of Greece’s historic city centers, many Greek synagogues were demolished, abandoned, or appropriated, erasing centuries of Jewish architectural and communal presence. This study presents a thirty year-long research and documentation initiative aimed at preserving, recovering, and eventually digitally reconstructing these “lost” synagogues, both as individual buildings and within their urban context. Drawing on architectural surveys, archival research, oral histories, and previously unpublished materials, including the recently rediscovered Shemtov Samuel archive, the project grew through the use of technology. Beginning with in situ surveys in the early 1990s, it evolved into full-scale digitally enhanced architectural drawings that formed the basis for further digital exploration, 3D models, and virtual reality outputs. With the addition of these new tools to existing documentation, the project can restore architectural detail and cultural context with a high degree of fidelity, even in cases where only fragmentary evidence survives. These digital reconstructions have informed physical restoration efforts as well as public exhibitions, heritage education, and urban memory initiatives across Greece. By reintroducing “invisible” Jewish landmarks into contemporary consciousness, the study addresses the broader implications of post-war urban homogenization, the marginalization of minority heritage, and the ethical dimensions of digital preservation. This interdisciplinary approach, which bridges architectural history, digital humanities, urban studies, and cultural heritage, demonstrates the value of digital tools in reconstructing “lost” pasts and highlights the potential for similar projects in other regions facing comparable erasures. Ancient paintings are an intangible window to the economy, politics, and customs of the past. Their characteristics have evolved or were made obsolete, with only limited contemporary connections remaining. This research aims to preserve and to interact with characters in 2D paintings to evolve their cultural identity through combining AI and AR. The scope of this research covers traditional Chinese paintings archived by the National Palace Museum in digital collections, mainly “New Year’s Market in a Time of Peace”. About 25 characters were used for training and 3D reconstruction in RODIN®. The models were converted into Augment® and Sketchfab® platforms as reactivated AR characters to interact with new urban fabrics and landscapes. Stable Diffusion® and RODIN® were successfully integrated to perform image training and reconstruct 3D AR models of various styles. As a result, interactions were conducted in two ways: in a mixed context with mixed characters in a painting and in a familiar context in the real world with mixed characters. It was found that AR facilitated the interpretation of how the old urban fabric was arranged. Using AI and AR is a current issue. Combining AI and AR can activate ubiquitous preservation to perform recursive processing from diffused images in order to reconstruct 3D models. This activated heritage preservation method is a reasonable alternative to redefining intangible subjects with a new and evolved contemporary cultural identity. Full article

This paper argues for a paradigm shift in heritage conservation—one that integrates affective connections, digital technologies, and circular economy principles to respond to the complex realities of urban transformation. Using the case of the Dennys Lascelles Wool Store in Geelong, this position paper contends that current preservation models, rooted in the Authoritative Heritage Discourse (AHD), are inadequate for addressing the nuanced value of industrial heritage, particularly when physical structures are altered or lost. The demolition of the Wool Store’s iconic bow truss structure exemplifies the tension between rapid urban development and heritage conservation. While the physical element has been removed, the site’s cultural and emotional resonance persists, underscoring the role of affect in shaping collective memory and place identity. This paper positions affect as a critical component of heritage discourse—one that expands beyond materiality to include sensory and emotional dimensions often overlooked by institutional frameworks. Digital heritage technologies offer powerful tools to document, represent, and interpret both tangible and intangible aspects of cultural heritage. In the case of the Wool Store, these tools not only preserve what has been lost but also invite public engagement and reinterpretation. However, preservation should not end with digital replication. A circular economy approach calls for the adaptive reuse of remaining structures, allowing historic sites to evolve functionally while retaining their significance. Full article

High-resolution holographic visualization of built environments remains largely inaccessible due to the complexity and technical demands of traditional 3D data acquisition processes. This study proposes a workflow for producing high-quality full-color digital holographic stereograms of architectural landmarks using Google Earth Studio. By leveraging photogrammetrically reconstructed three-dimensional (3D) city models and a controlled camera path, we generated perspective image sequences of two iconic monuments, that is, the Basílica de la Sagrada Família (Barcelona, Spain) and the Arc de Triomphe (Paris, France). A custom pipeline was implemented to compute keyframe coordinates, extract cinematic image sequences, and convert them into histogram data suitable for CHIMERA holographic printing. The holograms were recorded on Ultimate U04 silver halide plates and illuminated with RGB light-emitting diodes, yielding visually immersive reconstructions with strong parallax effects and color fidelity. This method circumvented the requirement for physical 3D scanning, thereby enabling scalable and cost-effective holography using publicly available 3D datasets. In conclusion, the findings indicate the potential of combining Earth Studio with digital holography for urban visualization, cultural heritage preservation, and educational displays. Full article

In recent decades, Japan has faced rural depopulation due to urban migration, resulting in widespread property abandonment, the “Akiyas”. This paper presents RE-HAK (Refurbish to Host in Akiyas), a blockchain-based framework promoting a circular economy (CE). RE-HAK enables occupants to live rent-free in Akiyas by completing AI-managed refurbishment milestones via smart contracts. Each milestone—waste removal, structural repairs, or energy upgrades—is verified and recorded on the blockchain. Benefits include: (1) rural economic revival through restoration incentives; (2) sustainable CE adoption; (3) preserving property values by halting deterioration; (4) safeguarding cultural heritage via traditional architecture restoration; and (5) transparent management through automated contracts, minimizing disputes. Findings from three case studies demonstrate RE-HAK’s adaptability across skill levels and project scales, though limitations such as rural digital literacy gaps and reliance on government support for scalability are noted. The framework advances Japan’s revitalization goals while offering a replicable model for nations facing depopulation and property abandonment, contingent on addressing technological and policy barriers.
