Background/Objectives: Children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) frequently present with feeding challenges that can lead to inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption, which can increase their risk of nutritional deficiencies and related health issues. The aim of this scoping review was to describe the main interventions focused on promoting fruit and vegetable consumption in children with NDDs. Methods: Two authors carried out a search strategy in PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PsycINFO using the following terms: “autism OR autistic OR asperger OR rett OR pervasive OR disintegrative OR ‘neurodevelopmental disorder’ OR ‘attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity’”; and the outcome (O): “fruit OR vegetable”. We included all randomized or non-randomized studies, published in English or Spanish, which assessed children’s fruit and vegetable consumption. Results: We included seven articles that applied different interventions, such as a mobile health and behavioral modification program (n = 1), repeated food exposure programs (n = 2), a play-based program with parental training (n = 1); the implementation of Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet (n = 1); an intensive interdisciplinary mealtime behavioral treatment (n = 1); and restrictive diets (n = 1). Conclusions: Parent-led behavior changes supported by multidisciplinary teams using play, positive reinforcement, and food modification strategies were the main interventions used to increase fruit and vegetable consumption in children with NDDs. This review supports designing evidence-based approaches to improve feeding challenges in this population. Full article

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), the world’s most widely grown legume crop, is not only of great commercial importance but is also a vital smallholder crop in low-to-medium-income countries. In sub-Saharan Africa common bean provides consumers with a major proportion of their dietary protein and micronutrients. However, productivity is constrained by viruses, particularly those vectored by aphids and whiteflies, and problems are further compounded by seed-borne transmission. We describe common bean’s major viral threats including the aphid-transmitted RNA viruses bean common mosaic virus and bean common mosaic necrosis virus, and the whitefly-transmitted begomoviruses bean golden mosaic virus and bean golden yellow mosaic virus and discuss how high-throughput sequencing is revealing emerging threats. We discuss how recent work on indirect and direct viral ‘manipulation’ of vector behaviour is influencing modelling of viral epidemics. Viral extended phenotypes also modify legume interactions with beneficial organisms including root-associated microbes, pollinators and the natural enemies of vectors. While problems with common bean tissue culture have constrained transgenic and gene editing approaches to crop protection, topical application of double-stranded RNA molecules could provide a practical protection system compatible with the wide diversity of common bean lines grown in sub-Saharan Africa. The growing demand for sustainable, nutritionally adequate plant-based foods has driven innovation in meat analogues. This study presents a novel approach to upcycling potato juice protein—a by-product of starch production—into plant-based gyros (PBG) enriched with iron and dietary fiber. Four formulations (PBG1-PBG4) were developed using a blend of potato, rice, wheat, and pea proteins, and fortified with either ferritin-rich sprout powder or ferrous sulfate. Comprehensive analyses were conducted to assess nutritional composition, mineral content, glycoalkaloid safety, antioxidant activity, texture, water mobility, sensory appeal, and microbiological stability. All variants met high-protein labeling criteria and exhibited favorable fiber and mineral profiles. In vitro digestion significantly enhanced antioxidant bioaccessibility, particularly phenolic acids. Sensory evaluations favored ferritin-enriched variants, which also demonstrated superior texture and consumer acceptance. Microbiological assessments confirmed safety for up to 10 days under refrigeration. These findings highlight the potential of potato juice protein as a sustainable, functional ingredient in next-generation plant-based meat analogues. Full article

Introduction: Recent guidelines developed by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) and the European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) focused on the dietetic management of obesity in adults. The present study aimed to explore the perspectives of healthcare professionals regarding these guidelines. Methods: In total, 85 registered dietitians/nutritionists from Greece, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, and the United Kingdom completed an online survey, and 10 were interviewed, in February–March 2023. Demographic data were also collected. Results: Awareness of the EASO-EFAD guidelines among registered dietitians/nutritionists was moderate (57.6%), but only 20% had read them in full. Dietitians with higher education and relevant experience were more likely to have read the guidelines. Less than half reported that key evidence-based recommendations, such as individualized medical nutrition therapy and intensive behavioral interventions, are already included in national guidance. Recommendations like portfolio or DASH diets, partial meal replacements, and calorie restriction were less commonly part of national guidance/usual practice. A small percentage of participants described their adoption of several nutritional approaches novel to them. These included the portfolio dietary pattern, partial meal replacements, and intermittent fasting or continuous calorie restriction. For some Irish dietitians, prioritizing weight as the main outcome conflicted with their emphasis on overall health and individualized nutrition therapy. Other barriers of recommendation implementation included exclusive availability in English, rapid changes in obesity management, staffing shortages, limited multidisciplinary collaboration, and inconsistent knowledge among healthcare providers. Conclusions: The present study identified gaps in the adoption of the EASO-EFAD guidelines into dietetic/clinical practice. EFAD will develop strategies to disseminate these guidelines at different levels of stakeholders (national/local authorities, dietitians/nutritionists, and patients). Full article

Food security among college students is an increasing concern, with potential implications for their health, academic performance, and future well-being. This study investigated food security within a college community in Mexico, focusing on food availability, access (both economic and physical), and consumption patterns. A mixed-methods approach was employed at Ciudad Universitaria, BUAP, Mexico, between 2023 and 2024. Stratified random sampling was used, resulting in a final sample of 606 students. Data were collected through structured questionnaires covering sociodemographic characteristics and eating habits, the ELCSA, structured cafeteria observations, semi-structured interviews with key informants, and three focus groups. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square tests (p < 0.05). Post hoc analysis with Bonferroni adjustment confirmed that origin (p = 0.0017), mode of transportation (p = 2.31 × 10−5) and private vehicles (p = 1.77 × 10−5) were the key determinants. Although the environment offered a variety of options, processed and ultra-processed products dominated the food choices. A total of 95.9% of students purchased food on campus, yet only 21.8% reported engaging in healthy eating habits. Focus groups revealed that students’ food choices were influenced by availability, access, and perceptions of affordability and convenience. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve food security and promote healthier dietary practices within the college setting. Full article

Background: Pancreatic lipase (PL), the principal enzyme catalyzing the hydrolysis of dietary triacylglycerols in the intestinal lumen, is pivotal for efficient lipid absorption and plays a central role in metabolic homeostasis. Enhanced PL activity promotes excessive lipid assimilation and contributes to positive energy balance, key pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the escalating global prevalence of obesity—a complex, multifactorial condition strongly associated with metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Inhibition of pancreatic lipase (PL) constitutes a well-established therapeutic approach for attenuating dietary lipid absorption and mitigating obesity. Methods: With the aim to identify putative PL inhibitors, a Structure-Based Virtual Screening (SBVS) of PhytoHub database naturally occurring derivatives was performed. A refined library of 10,404 phytochemicals was virtually screened against a crystal structure of pancreatic lipase. Candidates were filtered out based on binding affinity, Lipinski’s Rule of Five, and structural clustering, resulting in six lead compounds. Results: In vitro, enzymatic assays confirmed theoretical suggestions, highlighting Pinoresinol as the best PL inhibitor. Molecular dynamics simulations, performed to investigate the stability of protein–ligand complexes, revealed key interactions, such as persistent hydrogen bonding to catalytic residues. Conclusions: This integrative computational–experimental workflow highlighted new promising natural PL inhibitors, laying the foundation for future development of safe, plant-derived anti-obesity therapeutics. Aromatase inhibitors (AIs), with or without gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs, are the cornerstone of adjuvant endocrine therapy for women with hormone receptor-positive early-stage breast cancer, offering significant reductions in recurrence risk and improving long-term survival. Their use is frequently accompanied by treatment-related toxicities that can adversely affect patients’ quality of life (QoL) and adherence to therapy. Commonly reported side effects include vasomotor symptoms, such as hot flashes; musculoskeletal disorders, such as arthralgia and myalgia; mood disorders; and genitourinary discomfort, such as vaginal dryness and dyspareunia. Additionally, AIs are associated with a heightened risk of bone loss, leading to osteoporosis and fractures, and may have implications for cardiovascular health. Effective management of these adverse events is pivotal in maintaining treatment adherence and preserving QoL. Evidence-based strategies to address these toxicities include pharmacological interventions, such as analgesics for joint pain, bisphosphonates or denosumab for bone health, and hormonal or non-hormonal approaches for vasomotor and genitourinary symptoms. Non-pharmacological measures, including physical activity, dietary adjustments, and complementary therapies, can also help mitigate symptoms. This review examines the broad spectrum of AI-associated toxicities, discusses their clinical implications, and provides an overview of evidence-based management strategies. These insights aim to support clinicians in optimizing patient care while minimizing the toxicities of therapy. Full article

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, immune-mediated neurological disorder with increasing global prevalence. Emerging evidence underscores the role of lifestyle interventions (particularly diet and physical activity) in modulating disease progression and improving quality of life. This narrative review synthesizes current scientific literature on the effects of dietary interventions, including the Mediterranean, ketogenic, Swank, Wahls, gluten-free, and fasting-based diets, alongside various physical activity regimens. The Mediterranean and ketogenic diets show promise in reducing inflammation, enhancing neuroprotection, and improving metabolic health. Similarly, structured physical activity (including aerobic, resistance, sensorimotor, and mind–body exercises) demonstrates benefits in mobility, fatigue, and mental well-being. The review highlights the need for personalized, sustainable approaches that integrate nutritional and exercise-based strategies for optimal MS management in the long term. Full article

Background: Balancing nutrition security with environmental sustainability is a key priority in global food policy, with Sustainable Healthy Diets (SHDs) serving as a critical framework aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Traditional Japanese cuisine reflects SHD principles through its emphasis on plant-based, seasonal, and minimally processed dishes. However, modern, globalized dietary patterns increasingly feature ultra-processed foods, raising concerns about health risks such as high sodium intake. Methods: This study adopts a novel dish-level content analysis of 120 contemporary recipes from NHK Today’s Cooking between 2023 and 2025, a TV program by Japan’s national public broadcaster that is widely regarded as reflecting the practices of Japanese home cooking, to examine how SHDs pillars—nutritional diversity (e.g., varied protein sources), environmental sustainability (e.g., low-carbon ingredients), and cultural continuity (e.g., traditional techniques)—are embedded in Japanese home cooking. Unlike macro-level consumption or nutrition data, this dish-level approach reveals how individual dishes embody sustainability through ingredient selection, preparation methods, and cultural logic. Results: Quantitatively, pork (33.3%) and seafood (19.2%) together dominated main protein sources, with minimal beef (2.5%) and a notable presence of soy-based foods (12.5%), supporting lower reliance on environmentally intensive red meat; mean salt content per person in main dishes was 2.16 ± 1.09 g (28.9% for men, 33.3% for women of Japan’s daily salt targets), while recipe patterns emphasizing fermentation and seasonal alignment highlight possible pathways through which Japanese dietary practices can be considered ecologically efficient. Simultaneously, the analysis identifies emerging challenges, encompassing environmental issues such as overfishing and public health concerns like excessive sodium consumption. Conclusions: By centering dishes as culturally meaningful units, and using media recipes as reproducible, representative datasets for monitoring dietary change, this approach offers a reproducible framework for assessing dietary sustainability in evolving global food systems. Background/Objectives: Suboptimal gestational weight gain (GWG) has been linked to increased risks of adverse maternal outcomes. Evidence linking diet in pregnancy to GWG remains limited. We assessed relationships between adherence to five dietary patterns (Planetary Health Diet [PHD], Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension [DASH], Alternate Mediterranean Diet [AMED], Healthy Eating Index [HEI], and Alternate Healthy Eating Index [AHEI]) and 2009 Institute of Medicine GWG categories. Methods: Women expecting singleton pregnancies participated in the NICHD Fetal Growth Studies and completed a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) at 8 to 13 weeks of gestation that captured their baseline diet. Adherence to each dietary pattern was calculated, with higher scores indicating greater adherence. Women were categorized into low, moderate or high adherence to each dietary pattern. Using multinomial logistic regression, we estimated adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals [OR (95% CIs)] of inadequate or excessive GWG (reference category: adequate), for high vs. low adherence to each dietary pattern. Results: In the full cohort, women with high vs. low adherence to DASH, AMED, HEI, or AHEI (but not PHD) had a 13% to 31% lowered odds of inadequate total GWG [ranging from 0.87 (0.58, 1.31) for AMED to 0.69 (0.48, 0.99) for DASH]. High adherence to DASH or HEI was associated with lower odds of inadequate first-trimester GWG, after correcting for multiple testing [DASH: 0.36 (0.22, 0.61), HEI: 0.49 (0.30, 0.79)]. No significant association was observed between any of the dietary patterns and excessive total and trimester-specific GWG. Conclusions: Greater adherence to several dietary patterns was associated with lowered odds of inadequate GWG. Future studies could characterize these diets objectively by identifying metabolite signatures and examining their associations with GWG. Full article

Breast cancer remains a critical global health challenge, with over 2.1 million new cases annually. This review systematically evaluates recent advancements (2022–2024) in machine and deep learning approaches for breast cancer detection and risk management. Our analysis demonstrates that deep learning models achieve 90–99% accuracy across imaging modalities, with convolutional neural networks showing particular promise in mammography (99.96% accuracy) and ultrasound (100% accuracy) applications. Tabular data models using XGBoost achieve comparable performance (99.12% accuracy) for risk prediction. The study confirms that lifestyle modifications (dietary changes, BMI management, and alcohol reduction) significantly mitigate breast cancer risk. Key findings include the following: (1) hybrid models combining imaging and clinical data enhance early detection, (2) thermal imaging achieves high diagnostic accuracy (97–100% in optimized models) while offering a cost-effective, less hazardous screening option, (3) challenges persist in data variability and model interpretability. These results highlight the need for integrated diagnostic systems combining technological innovations with preventive strategies. The review underscores AI’s transformative potential in breast cancer diagnosis while emphasizing the continued importance of risk factor management. Future research should prioritize multi-modal data integration and clinically interpretable models. Full article

Vitamins A, D, E, K, B2, B12, and C play a key role in regulating metabolism and oxidative stress, significantly impacting cardiometabolic health. This review uniquely integrates mechanistic and epidemiological data to examine sex-specific differences in the bioavailability, metabolism, and physiological effects of these vitamins. By linking hormonal and genetic factors with oxidative stress modulation, lipid metabolism, and endothelial function, we outline how individualized vitamin intake strategies may help prevent cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. The paper also identifies natural dietary sources and optimal intake recommendations for each vitamin, emphasizing the importance of tailoring supplementation to sex-related needs. This review focuses specifically on pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a serious inherited disease that affects the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems in children and adolescents, causing chronic inflammation, infections, and impaired nutrient absorption. A key component of patient care is monitoring nutritional status, particularly based on BMI, which correlates with lung function and life expectancy. This paper presents the latest guidelines for dietary therapy, including a high-calorie and fat-rich diet supported by pancreatic enzymes, as well as the importance of vitamin and mineral supplementation in the context of CF pathophysiology. The role of modern therapies that modulate CFTR function to improve patients’ quality of life and support antimicrobial therapy is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the role of the gut microbiota and the potential for its modulation by probiotics, highlighting their potential to alleviate inflammation and support the immune system. The conclusions underscore the need for a comprehensive, individualized approach to diagnosis and therapy, which is crucial for improving the quality of life and health prognosis of children with CF. New visual tools and a clinical case study enhance the practical applicability of current recommendations, while emerging areas such as microbiome-targeted interventions and treatment inequalities are also addressed. Bacterial diseases are a major constraint to aquaculture productivity, driving extensive antibiotic use and raising concerns over antimicrobial resistance, environmental contamination, and food safety. Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound from Curcuma longa, exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities but is limited by poor water solubility, instability, and low bioavailability. This review was conducted through a literature search of Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using targeted keywords, including curcumin nanoparticles, antibacterial, aquatic pathogens, nanotechnology, synthesis, and disease control. Titles and abstracts were screened for relevance, followed by full-text evaluation of selected studies. Key findings were critically analyzed and incorporated into the review. Findings from the literature indicate that curcumin nanoparticles, synthesized via milling, anti-solvent precipitation, ionic gelation, emulsification, spray drying, and metal/polymer nanocomposite formation, exhibit enhanced antibacterial activity against aquatic pathogens, including Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. Optimally engineered curcumin nanoparticles (<100 nm, being mostly spherical, highly negatively charged) can penetrate bacterial membranes, disrupt biofilms, lower minimum inhibitory concentrations, and improve in vivo fish survival. Practical applications include dietary supplementation to boost fish immunity and growth, water disinfection to reduce pathogen loads, immersion therapy for external infections, and antimicrobial coatings for aquaculture equipment and surfaces, resulting in reduced infections and outbreaks, reduced mortality, improved water quality, and decreased antibiotic dependence. In conclusion, curcumin nanoparticles and curcumin-based nanocomposites present a versatile, eco-friendly approach to sustainable aquaculture disease management. However, further field-scale validation, safety assessment, and cost-effective production methods are necessary to enable commercial adoption. Full article

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a vital crop cultivated primarily in developing regions, playing a strategic role in global food security through its significant contribution to nutrition, economy, and livelihoods. Global and regional production trends revealed increasing demand and expanded cultivation areas, underpinning the fruit’s importance in national food security policies and economic frameworks. The date fruit’s rich nutritional profile, encompassing carbohydrates, dietary fiber, minerals, and bioactive compounds, supports its status as a functional food with health benefits. Postharvest technologies and quality preservation strategies, including temperature-controlled storage, advanced drying, edible coatings, and emerging AI-driven monitoring systems, are critical to reducing losses and maintaining quality across diverse cultivars and maturity stages. Processing techniques such as drying, irradiation, and cold plasma distinctly influence sugar composition, texture, polyphenol retention, and sensory acceptance, with cultivar- and stage-specific responses guiding optimization efforts. The cold chain and innovative packaging solutions, including vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging, along with biopolymer-based edible coatings, enhance storage efficiency and microbial safety, though economic and practical constraints remain, especially for smallholders. Microbial contamination, a major challenge in date fruit storage and export, is addressed through integrated preservation approaches combining thermal, non-thermal, and biopreservative treatment. However, gaps in microbial safety data, mycotoxin evaluation, and regulatory harmonization hinder broader application. Date fruit derivatives such as flesh, syrup, seeds, press cake, pomace, and vinegar offer versatile functional roles across food systems. They improve nutritional value, sensory qualities, and shelf life in bakery, dairy, meat, and beverage products while supporting sustainable waste valorization. Emerging secondary derivatives like powders and extracts further expand the potential for clean-label, health-promoting applications. This comprehensive review underscores the need for multidisciplinary research and development to advance sustainable production, postharvest management, and value-added utilization of date palm fruits, fostering enhanced food security, economic benefits, and consumer health worldwide.
