Deforestation remains a crucial Anthropocene challenge, driving biodiversity loss, carbon emissions, and socio-ecological disruption. Despite extensive study, the long-term structure, thematic evolution, and collaborative patterns of deforestation research remain insufficiently synthesized. This bibliometric analysis examines 5091 publications from WoS and Scopus (1974–2025), using RStudio (version 4.5.2 (31 October 2025)), VOSViewer (version 1.6.20), and Excel to analyze publication trends, citation patterns, thematic clusters, and collaboration networks. Results show rapid growth after 2000, with citation peaks in 2010 and 2020. Major thematic clusters include deforestation, climate change, agriculture, governance, REDD+, and remote sensing. Environmental Research Letters is the most influential journal; Fearnside, P., is the leading author, and the UC system is a top institution. The USA and Brazil lead nationally, with the Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia as primary geographic foci, reflecting persistent North–South collaboration dynamics. Limitations include reliance on English-language publications and title-only search criteria, which may underrepresent non-Anglophone research. Future research should expand to multiple languages, incorporate gray literature, and examine the policy impacts of deforestation-free supply chain regulations, such as the EUDR. This review underscores deforestation science as a growing, multidisciplinary field that requires the integration of social and ecological sciences, AI, and geospatial tools, alongside stronger research-policy linkages and enhanced capacity in forest-affected regions. The EU Regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR) introduces a new regulatory framework in which the agri-environmental characteristics of production become a prerequisite for access to the European Union market. In this paper, the EUDR is conceptualized as a regulatory framework that renders pre-existing agri-environmental risk drivers economically relevant and, in cases of non-compliance, may translate them into financial risks for agricultural businesses through identifiable transmission channels. The study aims to identify these risk drivers and to assess the institutional and technical readiness of Eastern European countries to implement the Regulation’s requirements. The methodological approach combines an analysis of trade exposure to the EU market, an assessment of countries’ spatial and digital capacities, and the construction of an Institutional and Technical Readiness Index for EUDR implementation. The results indicate an asymmetric impact of the Regulation across the region, driven by cross-country differences in the availability of geospatial data, the maturity of digital traceability systems, and the effectiveness of institutional coordination. The findings further show that broad indicators of digital trade facilitation are insufficient to explain variation in readiness to comply with EUDR requirements. Overall, the study identifies the key institutional and technical constraints shaping EUDR implementation readiness and demonstrates how these constraints translate into financial risks along agricultural supply chains. Global environmental norms increasingly shape commodity governance in the Global South, with the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) representing a prominent attempt to govern land-based products through extraterritorial sustainability criteria. This study examines how such norms are received, reinterpreted, negotiated, and resisted in Indonesia’s palm oil sector, focusing on smallholder-dominated value chains in Serdang Bedagai and Simalungun, North Sumatra. Centered on everyday resistance and policy decoupling as its core interpretive lenses, and drawing on habitus as a supporting concept, the study employs qualitative fieldwork, in-depth interviews, field observations, and critical discourse analysis to investigate tensions between deforestation-free supply chain expectations and local realities marked by fragmented landholdings, informal tenure, intermediary dependence, and cashflow-oriented livelihood strategies. The findings show that the EUDR is widely perceived not as a sustainability opportunity, but as an externally imposed regulatory pressure that threatens income stability and market access. Local actors respond through discursive reframing, continued reliance on informal trading practices, and partial or symbolic implementation of legality and traceability requirements. The study argues that inclusive deforestation-free governance requires differentiated obligations, transitional legality pathways, and cooperative-based traceability mechanisms that better align global norms with local institutional capacity and livelihood structures. New regulations, such as the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR), make verifiable agricultural data (AgData) essential for global trade. However, its value is compromised by a widespread “AgData Paradox”, characterized by distrust and fragmentation. To address this problem, we present AgriTrust, a federated semantic governance framework that automates and governs data sharing. Its key methodological innovation lies in the deep integration of a multi-sectorial governance model with a semantic digital layer, implemented through the AgriTrust Ontology (an OWL ontology for tokenization and traceability) and a multi-vendor, blockchain-agnostic architecture that avoids single-vendor dependence. We demonstrate the framework’s feasibility through simulated case studies in three critical Brazilian supply chains: coffee (EUDR compliance), soybean (mass balance), and beef (animal traceability). Using a semantic reasoning pipeline on a proof-of-concept federated knowledge graph of 2010 triples, we show how AgriTrust enables verifiable provenance representation, automated compliance checking via executable data contracts, and cross-platform asset management. The results provide initial evidence that AgriTrust offers a conceptually coherent blueprint for agricultural data sharing, though operational deployment, scalability testing, and performance validation under real-world conditions remain as future work. This study examines how Multi-Scalar Nature-Based Regenerative Solutions (M-NbRS) can realign urban–industrial systems with planetary boundaries to mitigate Earth system destabilization. Using integrated systems analysis, we document three key findings: (1) global material flows show only 9% circularity amid annual extraction of 100 billion tons of resources; (2) Earth system diagnostics reveal 28 trillion tons of cryosphere loss since 1994 and 372 Zettajoules of oceanic heat accumulation; and (3) meta-analysis identifies accelerating biosphere integrity loss (61.56 million hectares deforested since 2001) and atmospheric CO2 concentrations reaching 424.61 ppm (2024). Our Vicious Cycle Atlas of Fragility framework maps three synergistic disintegration pathways: metabolic overload from linear resource flows exceeding sink capacity, entropic degradation through high-entropy waste driving cryospheric collapse, and planetary boundary transgression. The M-NbRS framework counters these through spatially nested interventions: hyper-local urban tree canopy expansion (demonstrating 0.4–12 °C cooling), regional initiatives like the Heart of Borneo’s 24 million-hectare conservation, and global industrial controls maintaining aragonite saturation (Ωarag > 2.75) for marine resilience. Implementation requires policy innovations including deforestation-free supply chains, sustainability-linked financing, and ecological reciprocity legislation. These findings provide an evidence base for transitioning industrial–urban systems from drivers of Earth system fragility to architects of regeneration within safe operating spaces. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that M-NbRS offer a scientifically grounded, policy-actionable framework for breaking the vicious cycles of Earth system destabilization. By operationalizing nature-based regeneration across spatial scales—from street trees to transboundary conservation—this approach provides measurable pathways to realign human systems with planetary boundaries, offering a timely blueprint for industrial–urban transformation within ecological limits. Brazil’s Forest Code (FC) is a landmark law that, despite dating back to the 1930s, has low compliance. Illegal deforestation continues, and millions of hectares that were set to be reforested remain degraded. Although sector agreements such as the Amazon Soy Moratorium (ASM) have been important in the fight against deforestation, the implementation of the FC represents the key long-term strategy to halt deforestation in the soy supply chain. Here, we used datasets of the boundaries of rural properties, deforestation permits, environmental licensing, and land cover in Mato Grosso to quantify illegal deforestation and analyzed compliance with the Forest Code (FC) on soy farms to explore how loopholes in the implementation of the FC allow deforestation to continue unabated. Our analyses show that between August 2009 and July 2019, soy farms in Mato Grosso State, the largest Brazilian soy producer, were responsible for 15% (or 468.1 thousand hectares) of all land cleared in registered properties. Half of this deforestation was illegal. The FC implementation within these properties has been slow: only 11% of registered soy farms have made it to the final stage of the registration process, thus being considered fully compliant. This novel analysis reinforces that accelerating the implementation of the FC could significantly reduce deforestation and advance the restoration of illegally cleared land particularly in the Cerrado, where 50% of the original cover has already been lost, as well as in the Amazon. By achieving full compliance in the soy sector, Brazil’s position in the international market would be strengthened as a supplier of sustainably produced, deforestation-free commodities. Full article

Due to the European Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR), coffee and other commodities and their derived products from deforested areas will be prohibited from being placed on the European Union (EU) market starting in December 2024. With the “EUDR Coffee Check”, a comprehensive tool was developed, in collaboration with the German Coffee Association (DKV), combining a database solution with automated analysis methodologies, combined with a web-frontend, to support the EUDR compliance of the coffee industry. The tool supports the gathering of verifiable information to ensure that coffee is deforestation-free after the 31 December 2020 EUDR cutoff date. To determine deforestation-free status, deep learning-based mapping methods on satellite imagery along with open access local and global datasets were applied to develop a 2020 forest reference map that aligns with the defined EUDR forest categories and the cutoff date. The tool can be used to conduct automatic deforestation checks by comparing coffee farm locations with reference forest maps from 2020 and raises a potential deforestation alert. Potential deforestation alerts are identified as critical cases based on the annually updated series of land use changes and/or deforestations observed within the base 2020 forest areas after the cutoff date. The tool also allows users to conduct a structured risk assessment of the provided geo-coordinates of production areas and the supply chain to document the complete exercise of the required EUDR due diligence process. The tool uses internationally recognized indices and statistics, such as UNDP, UNICEF, World Bank, and many more, to calculate a risk score to evaluate governance and human rights risks such as child labor, forced labor, or corruption associated with the sourcing regions. The presence of forests, deforestation risk, and maps providing information on the protected areas of indigenous people are used to identify the coffee production areas’ proximity and relative risk exposure to provide a full picture of the risk factors in line with the EUDR requirements. In addition to the detailed analysis of deforestation risk alerts, the EUDR Coffee Check provides a questionnaire that guides the user through the structured process to supplement the risk assessment and documentation of legality. Following focused questions and providing potential answers, the user is enabled to evaluate the risk for non-compliance according to the exact requirements of the EUDR and provides guidance on risk mitigation measures, such as the implementation of internal due diligence strategies, the usage of third-party verification schemes to increase reliability through on-site audits, or the usage of traceability platforms. The developed EUDR Coffee Check supports companies to comply with the EUDR due diligence obligations by analyzing, documenting, and reporting on individual shipments and the associated production areas and can be used by operators, traders, or any actor along the supply chain, including authorities, to control the checks at their discretion. The tool is offered at a nominal fee structure based on a customized term of usage. Full article

At COP26, the Glasgow Leaders Declaration committed to ending deforestation by 2030. Implementing deforestation-free supply chains is of growing importance to importers and exporters but challenging due to the complexity of supply chains for agricultural commodities which are driving tropical deforestation. Monitoring tools are needed that alert companies of forest losses around their source farms. ForestMind has developed compliance monitoring tools for deforestation-free supply chains. The system delivers reports to companies based on automated satellite image analysis of forest loss around farms. We describe an algorithm based on the Python for Earth Observation (PyEO) package to deliver near-real-time forest alerts from Sentinel-2 imagery and machine learning. A Forest Analyst interprets the multi-layer raster analyst report and creates company reports for monitoring supply chains. We conclude that the ForestMind extension of PyEO with its hybrid change detection from a random forest model and NDVI differencing produces actionable farm-scale reports in support of the EU Deforestation Regulation. The user accuracy of the random forest model was 96.5% in Guatemala and 93.5% in Brazil. The system provides operational insights into forest loss around source farms in countries from which commodities are imported. Full article

Tropical deforestation and forest degradation driven by agricultural commodity production remains one of the important sustainability challenges of our times. The responses to tropical deforestation so far have not managed to reverse global trends of forest loss, reigniting the discussion about more robust and systemic measures. The concept of deforestation risk is highly relevant for current debates about policy and trade, and likely to increase in importance in the context of the proposed EU Regulation on Deforestation-free Products and EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement. We argue that deforestation is a systemic risk that permeates through different economic sectors, including production, manufacturing, service and control sectors. International trade, investment and economic policies thus act as a systemic trap that cause the production sector to continue with nature’s destruction. This article seeks to more clearly define deforestation risk and uses the case of bovine leather from Brazil to illustrate how pressures for deforestation accumulate across economic sectors towards production, while deforestation risk is dispersed in an opposite trajectory. The article draws on multiple datasets and an extensive literature review. Included are quantitative data sources on annual slaughter, bovine hide/leather registry and annual deforestation, slaughterhouse and tannery locations. We argue that the EU banning unsustainable products from entry and putting incentives for more sustainable agricultural production in the tropics addresses deforestation risks that are currently visible and relatively easy to identify. These response mechanisms are conditioned upon traceability of deforestation risk across supply chains, which is prone to falsifications, leakage and laundry. Although proven to be essential, the proposed EU responses still miss out deeper leverage points to address the systemic drivers of deforestation coming from the manufacturing, service and control sectors that make production through deforestation profitable in the first place. After years of multilateral deliberations on how to stop global deforestation, such as REDD+ under the UNFCCC, deforestation-free supply chain (DFSC) initiatives emerged from the private sector. Linking both concepts conceptually and in policy practice could provide for synergies and enable more effective approaches against global deforestation. To operationalise such a linkage, a prerequisite is the knowledge of both concepts’ key characteristics, as well as resulting similarities and differences. This literature review firstly identifies key characteristics that affects the potential impact of such concepts, secondly analyses if and how REDD+ and DFSC define these characteristics, and thirdly compares both concepts towards a potential linkage. The results show that a linkage of REDD+ and DFSC provides numerous complementarities which could foster the goal of halting deforestation. This includes for example the driver commercial agriculture, and in terms of permanence, leakage, and degradation. But close coordination is needed to avoid unintended negative consequences, especially for subsistence and smallholder agriculture. The comparison shows that the political consensus found under REDD+ provides a good basis to be supplemented with private sectors’ DFSC initiatives, but additional initiatives like the Bonn Challenge and investments in agroforestry are needed in order to ensure the long-term effect on forest conversion. Supply chain sustainability has become a key issue for multinational corporations (MNCs). Hundreds of MNCs in agri-commodity sectors have recently committed to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains. In this article, we examine the power of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) participating in two initiatives that support the implementation of such commitments: the Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) and Transparency for Sustainable Economies (Trase). Drawing on document and literature research, participant observation as well as semi-structured interviews, we find that these NGOs exercise power with MNCs, in particular in terms of raising awareness and changing corporate self-perceptions. At the same time, though, there is a bias towards representing the positions and interests of materially strong actors in global supply chains. In doing so, NGOs risk reinforcing MNCs’ power over more marginalized actors. In this light, we argue that initiatives such as AFi and Trase can only be a first step towards a new economic system that respects ecological limits and delivers social justice. In order to shape transformative change, NGOs need to more actively push discussions about equitable distribution, emancipation and justice in natural resource governance. Full article
