This research considers a preliminary comparative technical evaluation of two micro-gas turbine (MGT) systems in combined heat and power (CHP) mode (100 kWe), aimed at supplying heat to a residential community of 15 average-sized buildings located in Central Europe over a year. Two systems were modelled in Ebsilon 15 software: a natural gas case (benchmark) and an ammonia-fueled case, both based on the same on-design parameters. Off-design simulations evaluated performance over variable ambient temperatures and loads. Idealized, unrecuperated cycles were adopted to isolate the thermodynamic impact of the fuel switch under complete combustion assumption. Under these assumptions, the study shows that the ammonia system produces more electrical energy and less excess heat, yielding marginally higher electrical efficiency and EUF (26.05% and 77.63%) than the natural gas system (24.59% and 77.55%), highlighting ammonia’s utilization potential in such a context. Future research should target validating ammonia combustion and emission profiles across the turbine load range, and updating the thermodynamic model with a recuperator and SCR accounting for realistic pressure losses. To further enhance the economic performance of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), this study develops a model-adaptive model predictive control (MPC) strategy. This strategy leverages the dynamic relationship between proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) output characteristics and temperature to track its optimal operating temperature (OOT), addressing challenges of temperature control accuracy and high energy consumption in the PEMFC thermal management system (TMS). First, PEMFC and TMS models were developed and experimentally validated. Subsequently, the PEMFC power–temperature coupling curve was experimentally determined under multiple operating conditions to serve as the reference trajectory for TMS multi-objective optimization. For MPC controller design, the TMS model was linearized and discretized, yielding a predictive model adaptable to different load demands for stack temperature across the full operating range. A multi-constrained quadratic cost function was formulated, aiming to minimize the deviation of the PEMFC operating temperature from the OOT while accounting for TMS parasitic power consumption. Finally, simulations under Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) conditions evaluated the OOT tracking performance of both PID and MPC control strategies, as well as their impact on stack efficiency and TMS energy consumption at different ambient temperatures. The results indicate that, compared to PID control, MPC reduces temperature tracking error by 33%, decreases fan and pump speed fluctuations by over 24%, and lowers TMS energy consumption by 10%. These improvements enhance PEMFC operational stability and improve FCV energy efficiency. Full article

This study systematically investigates 50 μm-diameter 631 stainless steel fine wires subjected to both sequential and simultaneous electrothermomechanical loading to simulate probe spring conditions in microelectronic test environments. Under cyclic current loading (~104 A/cm2), the 50 μm 631SS wire maintained electrical integrity up to 0.30 A for 15,000 cycles. Above 0.35 A, rapid oxide growth and abnormal grain coarsening resulted in surface embrittlement and mechanical degradation. Current-assisted tensile testing revealed a transition from recovery-dominated behavior at ≤0.20 A to significant thermal softening and ductility loss at ≥0.25 A, corresponding to a threshold temperature of approximately 200 °C. These results establish the endurance limit of 631 stainless steel wire under coupled thermal–mechanical–electrical stress and clarify the roles of Joule heating, oxidation, and microstructural evolution in electrical fatigue resistance. A degradation map is proposed to inform design margins and operational constraints for fatigue-tolerant, electrically stable interconnects in high-reliability probe spring applications. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cancer suffers from unresolved therapeutic challenges owing to the lack of targeted therapies and heightened recurrence risk. This study aimed to investigate the new series of hydroxamate by structurally modifying the pharmacophore of vorinostat. Methods: The present work involves the synthesis of 15 differently substituted 2H-1,2,3-triazole-based hydroxamide analogs by employing triazole ring as a cap with varied linker fragments. The compounds were evaluated for their anticancer effect, especially their anti-breast cancer response. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to examine binding interactions. Results: Results indicated that among all synthesized hybrids, the molecule VI(i) inhibits the growth of MCF-7 and A-549 cells (GI50 < 10 μg/mL) in an antiproliferative assay. Compound VI(i) was also tested for cytotoxic activity by employing an MTT assay against A549, MCF-7, and MDA-MB-231 cell lines, and the findings indicate its potent anticancer response, especially against MCF-7 cells with IC50 of 60 µg/mL. However, it experiences minimal toxicity towards the normal cell line (HEK-293). Mechanistic studies revealed a dual-pathway activation: first, apoptosis (17.18% of early and 10.22% of late apoptotic cells by annexin V/PI analysis); second, cell cycle arrest at the S and G2/M phases. It also promotes ROS generation in a concentration-dependent manner. The HDAC–inhibitory assay, extended in silico molecular docking, and MD simulation experiments further validated its significant binding affinity towards HDAC 1 and 6 isoforms. DFT and ADMET screening further support the biological proclivity of the title compounds. The notable biological contribution of VI(i) highlights it as a potential candidate, especially against breast cancer cells. Full article

Railway systems occupy a predominant role in urban transport, providing efficient, high-capacity mobility. Progress in rail transport allows fast traveling, whilst environmental concerns and CO2 emissions are on the rise. The integration of railway systems with renewable energy source (RES)-based stations presents a promising avenue to improve the sustainability, reliability, and efficiency of urban transport networks. A storage system is needed to both ensure a continuous power supply and meet train demand at the station. Batteries (BTs) offer high energy density, while supercapacitors (SCs) offer both a large number of charge and discharge cycles, and high-power density. This paper proposes a hybrid RES (photovoltaic and wind), combined with batteries and supercapacitors constituting the hybrid energy storage system (HESS). One major drawback of trains is the long charging time required in stations, so they have been fitted with SCs to allow them to charge up quickly. A new fuzzy energy management strategy (F-EMS) is proposed. This supervision strategy optimizes the power flow between renewable energy sources, HESS, and trains. DC bus voltage regulation is involved, maintaining BT and SC charging levels within acceptable ranges. The simulation results, carried out using MATLAB/Simulink, demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested fuzzy energy management strategy for various production conditions and train demand. The recent discovery of Orthonairovirus songlingense (SGLV) and Norwavirus beijiense (BJNV) in China has raised significant concern due to their potential to cause severe human disease. However, little is known about the structural features and function of their nucleoproteins, which play a key role in the viral life cycle. By combining small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data and AlphaFold 3 simulations, we reconstructed the BJNV and SGLV nucleoprotein structures for the first time. The SGLV and BJNV nucleoproteins have structures that are broadly similar to those of Orthonairovirus haemorrhagiae (CCHFV) nucleoproteins despite low sequence similarity. Based on structural analysis, several residues located in the positively charged region of BJNV and SGLV nucleoproteins have been indicated to be important for viral RNA binding. A positively charged RNA-binding crevice runs along the interior of the SGLV and BJNV ribonucleoprotein complex (RNP), shielding the viral RNA. Despite the high structural similarity between SGLV and BJNV nucleoprotein monomers, their RNPs adopt distinct conformations. These findings provide important insights into the molecular mechanisms of viral genome packaging and replication in these emerging pathogens. Also, our work demonstrates that experimental SAXS data can validate and improve predicted AlphaFold 3 structures to reflect their solution structure and also provides the first low-resolution structures of the BJNV and SGLV nucleoproteins for the future development of POC tests, vaccines, and antiviral drugs. Inspired by the Toyota Mirai, this study presents a high-fidelity data-driven approach for modelling and simulation of a fuel cell hybrid electric powertrain. This study utilises technical assessment data sourced from Argonne National Laboratory’s publicly available report, faithfully modelling most of the vehicle subsystems as data-driven entities. The simulation framework is developed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and is based on a power dynamics approach, capturing nonlinear interactions and performance intricacies between different powertrain elements. This study investigates subsystem synergies and performance boundaries under a combined driving cycle composed of the NEDC, WLTP Class 3 and US06 profiles, representing urban, extra-urban and aggressive highway conditions. To emulate the real-world load-following strategy, a state transition power management and allocation method is synthesised. The proposed method dynamically governs the power flow between the fuel cell stack and the traction battery across three operational states, allowing the battery to stay within its allocated bounds. This simulation framework offers a near-accurate and computationally efficient digital counterpart to a commercial hybrid powertrain, serving as a valuable tool for educational and research purposes. To address the freezing damage to tunnel lining caused by frost heaving of the surrounding rock in water-rich tunnels in cold regions, a numerical thermo-mechanical coupling model for tunnel-surrounding rock that considers the anisotropy of frost heave deformation was established by examining overall frost heaves in a freeze–thaw cycle. Using a COMSOL Multiphysics 6.0 platform and the sequential coupling method, the temperature field evolution of tunnel-surrounding rock, freezing cycle development, and distribution characteristics of the frost heaving force of a tunnel lining under different minimum temperatures, numbers of negative temperature days, frost heave ratios, and anisotropy coefficients of frost heave deformation were systematically simulated. The results revealed that the response of the temperature field of tunnel-surrounding rock to the external temperature varies spatially with time lags, the shallow surface temperatures and the area around the lining fluctuate with the climate, and the temperature of the deep surrounding rock is dominated by the geothermal gradient. The extent of the freezing cycle and the frost heaving force increase significantly when lowering the minimum temperature. The maximum frost heaving force usually occurs in the region of the side wall and the spring line, and tensile stress is prone to be generated at the spring line; the influence of slight fluctuations in the minimum temperature or the short shift in the coldest day on the frost heaving force is limited. A substantial increase in frost heaving force is observed with higher frost heave ratios; for example, an increase from 0.25% to 2.0% results in a 116% rise at the sidewall. Although the increase in the anisotropy coefficient of frost heave deformation does not change the overall distribution pattern of frost heaving force, it can exacerbate the directional concentration of frost heave strain, which can increase the frost heaving force at the periphery of the top arch of the lining. This study revealed the distribution pattern and key influencing factors of the freezing cycle and frost heaving force for tunnels, providing a theoretical basis and data reference for the frost resistance design of tunnels in cold regions. Road irregularities generate vibrations that are transmitted to cyclists’ hands. This paper describes a purpose-designed laboratory setup and data processing method to assess vibration-induced numbness and discomfort. The rear wheel of a road bike was coupled with a smart trainer for indoor cycling, while the front wheel was supported by a vibrating platform to simulate road–bike interaction. The vibrotactile perception threshold (VPT) is measured in the fingers, and a questionnaire was used to assess the discomfort in different parts of the hand using a unipolar scale. To validate the method, ten male volunteers underwent two one-hour cycling sessions, one for each of the two handlebar designs tested. VPT was measured in the index and little fingers of the right hand at 8 and 31.5 Hz before and after each session, while the discomfort questionnaire was completed at the end of each session. The discomfort scores showed a strong inter-subject variability, indicating the necessity to combine them with the objective measurements of the VPT, which is shown to be sensitive in identifying the perception shift due to vibration exposure and the differences between the fingers. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method for assessing hand numbness and discomfort in cyclists. Full article

To address the wear life prediction challenge of Guide Cones in passive compliant connectors under dynamic loads within specialized equipment, this study proposes a dynamic wear modeling and life assessment method based on the improved Archard model. Through integrated theoretical modeling, finite element simulation, and experimental validation, we establish a bidirectional coupling framework analyzing dynamic contact mechanics and wear evolution. By developing phased contact state identification criteria and geometric constraints, a transient load calculation model is established, revealing dynamic load characteristics with peak contact forces reaching 206.34 N. A dynamic contact stress integration algorithm is proposed by combining Archard’s theory with ABAQUS finite element simulation and ALE adaptive meshing technology, enabling real-time iterative updates of wear morphology and contact stress. This approach constructs an exponential model correlating cumulative wear depth with docking cycles (R2 = 0.997). Prototype experiments demonstrate a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 14.6% between simulated and measured wear depths, confirming model validity. With a critical wear threshold of 0.8 mm, the predicted service life reaches 45,270 cycles, meeting 50-year operational requirements (safety margin: 50.9%). This research provides theoretical frameworks and engineering guidelines for wear-resistant design, material selection, and life evaluation in high-reliability automatic docking systems. Full article

The optimization of robotic cells is a key challenge in the manufacturing industry due to the need to maximize efficiency in limited spaces and minimize operation times. Traditional cell design methods often face challenges due to the high complexity and dynamic nature of real-world applications. In response, this study presents a dual approach to optimize both spatial design and traversal time in robotic cells, using bioinspired evolutionary algorithms. Initially, a genetic algorithm is employed to optimize the layout of the cell elements, reducing space usage and avoiding interferences between workstations. Subsequently, an ant colony optimization algorithm is used to optimize the robots’ trajectories, minimizing cycle time. Through simulations and a digital model of the cell, key metrics such as total space reduction, operational time improvement, and productivity increase are evaluated. The results demonstrate that the combination of both approaches achieves significant improvements, enabling an average reduction of 21.19% in the occupied area and up to 20.15% in operational cycle time, consistently outperforming traditional methods. This approach has the potential to be applied in various industrial configurations, representing a relevant contribution in the integration of artificial intelligence techniques for the enhancement of robotic systems. The increasing complexity of modern automotive lighting systems requires advanced validation strategies that ensure both functional performance and regulatory compliance. This study presents a structured integration of Software-in-the-Loop (SiL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) testing within a digital twin (DT) framework for validating headlamp systems. A gated validation process (G10–G120) is proposed, aligning each development phase with corresponding simulation stages from early requirements and concept validation to real-world scenario testing and continuous integration. A key principle of this approach is the adoption of a framework built upon the V-Cycle, adapted to integrate DT technology with SiL and HiL workflows. This architectural configuration ensures a continuous data flow between the physical system, the digital twin, and embedded software components, enabling real-time feedback, iterative model refinement, and traceable system verification throughout the development lifecycle. The paper also explores strategies for effective DT integration, such as digital twin-as-a-service, which combines virtual testing with physical validation to support earlier fault detection, streamlined simulation workflows, and reduced dependency on physical prototypes during lighting system development. Unlike the existing literature, which often treats SiL, HiL, and DTs in isolation, this work proposes a unified, domain-specific validation framework. The methodology addresses a critical gap by aligning simulation-based testing with development milestones and regulatory standards, offering a foundation for industrial adoption. Full article

The increasing integration of wind and photovoltaic energy into power systems brings about large fluctuations and significant challenges for power absorption. Wind–solar–hydro–storage multi-energy complementary systems, especially joint dispatching strategies, have attracted wide attention due to their ability to coordinate the advantages of different resources and enhance both flexibility and economic efficiency. This paper develops a capacity optimization model for a wind–solar–hydro–storage multi-energy complementary system. The objectives are to improve net system income, reduce wind and solar curtailment, and mitigate intraday fluctuations. We adopt the quantum particle swarm algorithm (QPSO) for outer-layer global optimization, combined with an inner-layer stepwise simulation to maximize life cycle benefits under multi-dimensional constraints. The simulation is based on the output and load data of typical wind, solar, water, and storage in Yunnan Province, and verifies the effectiveness of the proposed model. The results show that after the wind–solar–hydro–storage multi-energy complementary system is optimized, the utilization rate of new energy and the system economy are significantly improved, which has a wide range of engineering promotion value. The research results of this paper have important reference significance for the construction of new power systems and the engineering design of multi-energy complementary projects. Full article

Optimizing Energy Performance of Phase-Change Material-Enhanced Building Envelopes Through Novel Performance Indicators

Over recent decades, phase-change materials (PCMs) have gained prominence as latent-heat thermal energy storage systems in building envelopes because of their high energy density. However, only PCMs that complete a full daily charge–discharge cycle can deliver meaningful energy and carbon-emission savings. This simulation study introduces a methodology that simultaneously optimizes PCM integration for storage efficiency, indoor thermal comfort, and energy savings. Two new indicators are proposed: overall storage efficiency (ECn), which consolidates heating and cooling-efficiency ratios into a single value, and the performance factor (PF), which quantifies the PCM’s effectiveness in maintaining thermal comfort. Using EnergyPlus v8.9 coupled with DesignBuilder, a residential ASHRAE 90.1 mid-rise apartment was modeled in six warm-temperate (Cfb) European cities for the summer period from June 1 to August 31. Four paraffin PCMs (RT-22/25/28/31 HC, 20 mm thickness) were tested under natural and controlled ventilation strategies, with windows opening 50% when outdoor air was at least 2 °C cooler than indoors. Simulation outputs were validated against experimental cubicle data, yielding a mean absolute indoor temperature error ≤ 4.5%, well within the ±5% tolerance commonly accepted for building thermal simulations. The optimum configuration—RT-25 HC with temperature-controlled ventilation—achieved PF = 1.0 (100% comfort compliance) in all six cities and delivered summer cooling-energy savings of up to 3376 kWh in Paris, the highest among the locations studied. Carbon-emission reductions reached 2254 kg CO2-e year−1, and static payback periods remained below the assumed 50-year building life at a per kg PCM cost of USD 1. The ECn–PF framework, therefore, provides a transparent basis for selecting cost-effective, energy-efficient, and low-carbon PCM solutions in warm-temperate buildings. Full article

Rammed earth (RE), a traditional material aligned with circular economy (CE) principles, has been gaining renewed interest in contemporary construction due to its low environmental impact and compatibility with sustainable building strategies. Though not a modern invention, it is being reintroduced in response to the increasingly strict European Union (EU) regulations on carbon footprint, life cycle performance, and thermal efficiency. RE walls offer multiple benefits, including humidity regulation, thermal mass, plasticity, and structural strength. This study also draws attention to their often-overlooked ability to mitigate indoor overheating. To preserve these advantages while enhancing thermal performance, this study explores insulation strategies that maintain the vapor-permeable nature of RE walls. A parametric analysis using Delphin 6.1 software was conducted to simulate heat and moisture transfer in two main configurations: (a) a ventilated system insulated with mineral wool (MW), wood wool (WW), hemp shives (HS), and cellulose fiber (CF), protected by a jute mat wind barrier and finished with wooden cladding; (b) a closed system using MW and WW panels finished with lime plaster. In both cases, clay plaster was applied on the interior side. The results reveal distinct hygrothermal behavior among the insulation types and confirm the potential of natural, low-processed materials to support thermal comfort, moisture buffering, and the alignment with CE objectives in energy-efficient construction.
