Pipelines, as critical infrastructure in energy transmission, municipal facilities, industrial production, and specialized equipment, are essential to national economic security and social stability. This paper systematically reviews the domestic and international research status of pipeline in-line inspection (ILI) technologies, with a focus on four major technological systems: electromagnetic, acoustic, optical, and robotic technologies. The operational principles, application scenarios, advantages, and limitations of each technology are analyzed in detail. Although existing technologies have achieved significant progress in defect detection accuracy and environmental adaptability, they still face challenges including insufficient adaptability to complex environments, the inherent trade-off between detection accuracy and efficiency, and high equipment costs. Future research directions are identified as follows: intelligent algorithm optimization for multi-physics collaborative detection, miniaturized and integrated design of inspection devices, and scenario-specific development for specialized environments. Through technological innovation and multidisciplinary integration, pipeline ILI technologies are expected to progressively realize efficient, precise, and low-cost lifecycle safety monitoring of pipelines. Economocracy: Global Economic Governance

Economic systems face critical challenges, including widening income inequality, unemployment driven by automation, mounting public debt, and environmental degradation. This study introduces Economocracy as a transformative framework aimed at addressing these systemic issues by integrating democratic principles into economic decision-making to achieve social equity, economic efficiency, and environmental sustainability. The research focuses on two core mechanisms: Economic Productive Resets (EPRs) and Economic Periodic Injections (EPIs). EPRs facilitate proportional redistribution of resources to reduce income disparities, while EPIs target investments to stimulate job creation, mitigate automion-related job displacement, and support sustainable development. The study employs a theoretical and analytical methodology, developing mathematical models to quantify the impact of EPRs and EPIs on key economic indicators, including the Gini coefficient for inequality, unemployment rates, average wages, and job displacement due to automation. Hypothetical scenarios simulate baseline conditions, EPR implementation, and the combined application of EPRs and EPIs. The methodology is threefold: (1) a mathematical–theoretical validation of the Cycle of Money framework, establishing internal consistency; (2) an econometric analysis using global historical data (2000–2023) to evaluate the correlation between GNI per capita, Gini coefficient, and average wages; and (3) scenario simulations and Difference-in-Differences (DiD) estimates to test the systemic impact of implementing EPR/EPI policies on inequality and labor outcomes. The models are further strengthened through tools such as OLS regression, and Impulse results to assess causality and dynamic interactions. Empirical results confirm that EPR/EPI can substantially reduce income inequality and unemployment, while increasing wage levels, findings supported by both the theoretical architecture and data-driven outcomes. Results demonstrate that Economocracy can significantly lower income inequality, reduce unemployment, increase wages, and mitigate automation’s effects on the labor market. These findings highlight Economocracy’s potential as a viable alternative to traditional economic systems, offering a sustainable pathway that harmonizes growth, social justice, and environmental stewardship in the global economy. Economocracy demonstrates potential to reduce debt per capita by increasing the efficiency of public resource allocation and enhancing average income levels. As EPIs stimulate employment and productivity while EPRs moderate inequality, the resulting economic growth expands the tax base and alleviates fiscal pressures. These dynamics lead to lower per capita debt burdens over time. The analysis is situated within the broader discourse of institutional economics to demonstrate that Economocracy is not merely a policy correction but a new economic system akin to democracy in political life. Electrocoagulation (EC) processes have emerged as an efficient solution for different inorganic and organic effluents. The main characteristics of this versatile process are its ease of operation and low sludge production. The literature indicates that EC can be successfully used as a single process or a step within a combined treatment system. If used in a combined system, this process could be employed as a pre-, a post-, or middle treatment step. Additionally, the EC process has been used in both continuous and batch modes. In most studies, EC has achieved significant improvements in the treated water quality and relatively low total energy consumption. This review presents a comprehensive evaluation and analysis of standalone and combined continuous EC processes. The influence of key operational parameters on continuous EC performance is thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, recent advancements in reactor design, modeling, and process optimization are addressed. The benefits of integrating other treatment processes with the EC process, such as advanced oxidation, membranes, chemical coagulation, and adsorption, are also evaluated. The performance of most standalone and combined EC processes used for organic pollutant treatment and published in the last 25 years is critically analyzed. This review is expected to give researchers many insights to improve their treatment scenario with recent and efficient environmental experiences, sustainability, and circular economy. The clearly presented information is expected to guide researchers in selecting efficient, cost-effective, and time-saving treatment alternatives. The findings ensure the considerable potential of continuous EC treatment processes for organic pollutants. However, more research is warranted to enhance process design, operational efficiency, scale-up, and economic viability. Full article

The construction industry is a cornerstone of New Zealand (NZ)’s economic growth, yet strategic infrastructure planning is constrained by fragmented and inconsistent pipeline data. Despite the increasing availability of construction pipeline datasets in NZ, their limited clarity, interoperability, and standardisation impede effective forecasting, policy development, and investment alignment. These challenges are compounded by disparate data structures, inconsistent reporting formats, and semantic discrepancies across sources, undermining cross-agency coordination and long-term infrastructure governance. To address this issue, the study begins by assessing the quality of four prominent pipeline datasets using Wang and Strong’s multidimensional data quality framework. This evaluation provides a necessary foundation for identifying the structural and semantic barriers that limit data integration and informed decision-making. The analysis examines four dimensions of data quality: accessibility, intrinsic quality, contextual relevance, and representational clarity. The findings reveal considerable inconsistencies in data fields, classification systems, and levels of detail across the datasets. Building on these insights, this study also develops a conceptual minimum dataset (MDS) framework comprising three core thematic categories: project identification, project characteristics, and project budget and timing. The proposed conceptual MDS includes unified data definitions, standardised reporting formats, and semantic alignment to enhance cross-platform usability and data confidence. This framework applies to the New Zealand context and is designed for replication in other jurisdictions, supporting the global push toward open, high-quality infrastructure data. The study contributes to the construction informatics and infrastructure planning by offering a practical solution to a critical data governance issue and introducing a transferable methodology for developing minimum data standards in the built environment to enable more informed, coordinated, and evidence-based decision-making. Mastitis is a significant challenge in the buffalo industry, affecting both milk production and animal health and resulting in economic losses. This study presents the first fully automated AI-driven thermal imaging system integrated with robotic milking, specifically developed for the real-time, non-invasive monitoring of udder health in Italian Mediterranean buffalo. Unlike traditional approaches, the system leverages the synchronized acquisition of thermal images during milking and compensates for environmental variables through a calibrated weather station. A transformer-based neural network (SegFormer) segments the udder area, enabling the extraction of maximum udder skin surface temperature (USST), which is significantly correlated with somatic cell count (SCC). Initial trials demonstrate the feasibility of this approach in operational farm environments, paving the way for scalable, precision diagnostics of subclinical mastitis. This work represents a critical step toward intelligent, automated systems for early detection and intervention, improving animal welfare and reducing antibiotic use. Full article

To address water sustainability challenges, this study investigates how public water concern influences corporate water responsibility (CWR) and how managerial green cognition moderates this relationship. Drawing on institutional theory and cognitive theory, we analyze a panel of 1292 publicly listed high-water-consuming firms in China from 2015 to 2024. The results show that public water concern significantly improves CWR by increasing legitimacy pressure, while its effect through government water governance attention is not statistically significant. Furthermore, managerial green cognition—including both economic and moral dimensions—positively moderates this relationship. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the moderating effect is stronger in firms with more female directors, older executives, and internationally experienced teams. These findings contribute to refining institutional theory in the context of environmental responsibility and highlight the critical role of executive cognition and demographic structure in corporate sustainability behavior. The Impact of Regional Policies on Chinese Business Growth: A Bibliometric Approach

In the context of both domestic and international economic landscapes, regional policy has emerged as an increasingly influential factor shaping the developmental trajectories of Chinese enterprises. Despite its growing significance, the extant literature lacks a comprehensive and systematically visualized synthesis that encapsulates the scope and trends of research in this domain. This study addresses this critical gap by conducting an integrative bibliometric and qualitative review of the academic output related to regional policy and Chinese firm growth. Drawing on a final dataset comprising 3428 validated academic publications—selected from an initial pool of 3604 records retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection between 1991 and 2022, the research employs a two-stage methodological framework. In the first phase, advanced bibliometric tools, and software applications, including RStudio, Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and CitNetExplorer, are utilized to implement techniques such as keyword co-occurrence analysis, thematic clustering, and the tracing of thematic evolution over time. These methods facilitate rigorous data cleansing, breakpoint identification, and the visualization of intellectual structures and emerging research patterns. In the second phase, a targeted qualitative review is conducted to evaluate the influence of regional policies on Chinese firms across three critical stages of business development: start-up, expansion, and maturity. The findings reveal that regional policy interventions generally exert a positive influence on firm performance throughout all stages of development. Notably, a significant concentration of citation activity occurred prior to 2017; however, post-2017, the volume of scholarly publications, journal-level impact (as measured by h-index), and author-level influence experienced a marked increase. Among the 3428 analyzed publications, a substantial portion—2259 articles—originated from Chinese academic institutions, highlighting the strong domestic research interest in the subject. Furthermore, since 2015, there has been a discernible shift in keyword co-occurrence trends, with increasing scholarly attention directed towards sustainable development issues, particularly those related to carbon dioxide emissions and green innovation, reflecting evolving policy priorities and environmental imperatives. Valorization of Sugarcane Bagasse in Thailand: An Economic Analysis of Ethanol and Co-Product Recovery via Organosolv Fractionation

A comprehensive techno-economic assessment was undertaken to determine the viability of bioethanol production from sugarcane bagasse in Thailand through organosolv fractionation, incorporating three distinct catalytic systems: sulfuric acid, formic acid, and sodium methoxide. Rigorous process simulations were executed using Aspen Plus, facilitating the derivation of detailed mass and energy balances, which served as the foundational input for downstream cost modeling. Economic performance metrics, including the total annualized cost and minimum ethanol selling price, were systematically quantified for each scenario. Among the evaluated configurations, the formic acid-catalyzed organosolv system exhibited superior techno-economic attributes, achieving the lowest unit production costs of 1.14 USD/L for ethanol and 1.84 USD/kg for lignin, corresponding to an estimated ethanol selling price of approximately 1.14 USD/L. This favorable outcome was attained with only moderate capital intensity, indicating a well-balanced trade-off between operational efficiency and investment burden. Conversely, the sodium methoxide-based process configuration imposed the highest economic burden, with a TAC of 15.27 million USD/year, culminating in a markedly elevated MESP of 5.49 USD/kg (approximately 4.33 USD/L). The sulfuric acid-driven system demonstrated effective delignification performance. Sensitivity analysis revealed that reagent procurement costs exert the greatest impact on TAC variation, highlighting chemical expenditure as the key economic driver. These findings emphasize the critical role of solvent choice, catalytic performance, and process integration in improving the cost-efficiency of lignocellulosic ethanol production. Among the examined options, the formic acid-based organosolv process stands out as the most economically viable for large-scale implementation within Thailand’s bioeconomy. Full article

Coal serves as the primary energy source for China, with production anticipated to reach 4.76 billion tons in 2024. However, the mining process generates a significant amount of gangue, with approximately 800 million tons produced in 2023 alone. Currently, China faces substantial gangue stockpiles, characterized by a low comprehensive utilization rate that fails to meet the country’s ecological and environmental protection requirements. The environmental challenges posed by the treatment and disposal of gangue are becoming increasingly severe. This review employs bibliometric analysis and theoretical perspectives to examine the latest advancements in gangue utilization, specifically focusing on the application of computational chemistry to elucidate the structural features and interaction mechanisms of coal gangue, and to collate how these insights have been leveraged in the literature to inform its potential utilization routes. The aim is to promote the effective resource utilization of this material, and key topics discussed include evaluating the risks of spontaneous combustion associated with gangue, understanding the mechanisms governing heavy metal migration, and modifying coal byproducts to enhance both economic viability and environmental sustainability. The case studies presented in this article offer valuable insights into the gangue conversion process, contributing to the development of more efficient and eco-friendly methods. By proposing a theoretical framework, this review will support ongoing initiatives aimed at the sustainable management and utilization of coal gangue, emphasizing the critical need for continued research and development in this vital area. This review uniquely combines bibliometric analysis with computational chemistry to identify new trends and gaps in coal waste utilization, providing a roadmap for future research. Full article

Rabies remains a significant global public health concern, causing an estimated 59,000–69,000 human fatalities annually. Despite being entirely preventable through vaccination, rabies continues to impose substantial economic burdens worldwide. This study presents a scoping review of the economic research on rabies to determine overlaps and gaps in knowledge and inform future research strategies. We selected 150 studies (1973–2024) to analyze. The review categorizes the literature based on geographic distribution, species focus, and type of study. Findings indicate that economic studies are disproportionately concentrated in developed countries, such as the United States and parts of Europe, where rabies risk is low, while high-risk regions, particularly in Africa and Asia, remain underrepresented. Most studies focus on dog-mediated rabies, reflecting its dominant role in human transmission, while fewer studies assess the economic impacts of wildlife and livestock-mediated rabies. Case studies and modeling approaches dominate the literature, whereas cost–benefit and cost–effectiveness analyses—critical for informing resource allocation—are limited. The review highlights the need for more economic evaluations in rabies-endemic regions, expanded research on non-dog reservoirs, and broader use of economic methods. Addressing these gaps will be crucial for optimizing rabies control and supporting global initiatives to eliminate dog-mediated rabies by 2030. Full article

Background: Mediastinal staging plays a critical role in guiding treatment decisions for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). While mediastinoscopy has been the gold standard for assessing mediastinal lymph node involvement, endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative with comparable diagnostic accuracy. This systematic review evaluates the diagnostic performance, safety, cost-effectiveness, and feasibility of EBUS-TBNA versus mediastinoscopy for mediastinal staging. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, including searches in Medline, Scopus, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases for studies published from 2010 onwards. A total of 1542 studies were identified, and after removing duplicates and applying eligibility criteria, 100 studies were included for detailed analysis. The extracted data focused on sensitivity, specificity, complications, economic impact, and patient outcomes. Results: EBUS-TBNA demonstrated high sensitivity (85–94%) and specificity (~100%), making it an effective first-line modality for NSCLC staging. Mediastinoscopy remained highly specific (~100%) but exhibited slightly lower sensitivity (86–90%). EBUS-TBNA had a lower complication rate (~2%) and was more cost-effective, while mediastinoscopy provided larger biopsy samples, essential for molecular and histological analyses. The need for general anaesthesia, longer hospital stays, and increased procedural costs make mediastinoscopy less favourable as an initial approach. Combining both techniques in select cases enhanced overall staging accuracy, reducing false negatives and improving diagnostic confidence. Conclusions: EBUS-TBNA has become the preferred first-line mediastinal staging method due to its minimally invasive approach, high diagnostic accuracy, and lower cost. However, mediastinoscopy remains crucial in cases requiring posterior mediastinal node assessment or larger tissue samples. The integration of both techniques in a stepwise diagnostic strategy offers the highest accuracy while minimizing risks and costs. At a time when globalisation and the economic crisis have forced a reduction in public expenditure at all levels, social policy and social welfare systems’ efforts for sustainable development are focused on identifying alternative ways to provide integrated services and achieve balanced social development. Post-colonial Cyprus has experienced radical socio-political changes that have demanded rapid responses to address its needs. This paper aims to discuss the role of the Cypriot voluntary sector in the national integrated care. Within the spectrum of ensuring social rights and social justice, the voluntary sector has emerged as a key factor of social policy implementation. Through the exploration and analysis of this context, an in-depth insight is given into socio-political and economic factors, dimensions, relationships, processes, patterns, and critical junctures that, under the influence of history, have shaped the voluntary sector’s path, formed its major stages of transformation, and defined its relationship with structures and institutions. Kiwifruit Peelability (Actinidia spp.): A Review

Kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) is a globally important economic fruit with high nutritional value. Fruit peelability, defined as the mechanical ease of separating the peel from the fruit flesh, is a critical quality trait influencing consumer experience and market competitiveness and has emerged as a critical breeding target in fruit crop improvement programs. The present review systematically synthesized existing studies on kiwifruit peelability, and focused on its evolutionary trajectory, genotypic divergence, quantitative evaluation, possible underlying mechanisms, and artificial manipulation strategies. Kiwifruit peelability research has advanced from early exploratory studies in New Zealand (2010s) to systematic investigations in China (2020s), with milestones including the development of evaluation metrics and the identification of genetic resources. Genotypic variation exists among kiwifruit genera. Several Actinidia eriantha accessions and the novel Actinidia longicarpa cultivar ‘Guifei’ exhibit superior peelability, whereas most commercial Actinidia chinensis and Actinidia deliciosa cultivars exhibit poor peelability. Quantitative evaluation highlights the need for standardized metrics, with “skin-flesh adhesion force” and “peel toughness” proposed as robust, instrument-quantifiable indicators to minimize operational variability. Mechanistically, peelability is speculated to be governed by cell wall polysaccharide metabolism and phytohormone signaling networks. Pectin degradation and differential distribution during fruit development form critical “peeling zones”, whereas ethylene, abscisic acid, and indoleacetic acid may regulate cell wall remodeling and softening, collectively influencing skin-flesh adhesion. Owing to the scarcity of easy-to-peel kiwifruit cultivars, artificial manipulation methods, including manual peeling benchmarking, lye treatment, and thermal peeling, can be employed to further optimize kiwifruit peelability. Currently, shortcomings include incomplete genotype-phenotype characterization, limited availability of easy-peeling germplasms, and a fragmented understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Future research should focus on methodological innovation, germplasm development, and the elucidation of relevant mechanisms. Full article

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål, 1854), is the most devastating pest of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Although insecticides are used to control this pest, host plant resistance is a more effective and economic solution. Therefore, identification of N. lugens-resistant genes and elucidation of their underlying resistance mechanisms are critical for developing elite rice cultivars with enhanced and durable resistance. Research has shown that in the long-term evolutionary arms race, rice has developed complex defense systems against N. lugens, while N. lugens has developed diverse and sophisticated strategies to overcome the plant’s defenses. This review emphasizes recent advances in the molecular interactions between rice and the N. lugens, particularly focusing on the resistance mechanisms of 17 cloned major N. lugens resistance genes, which have significantly improved our understanding of the molecular basis of rice–N. lugens interactions. We also highlight the roles of several N. lugens salivary components in activating or suppressing rice defense responses. These insights provide a foundation for developing sustainable and effective strategies to manage this devastating pest of rice. Full article

Weed management remains a critical challenge in the U.S. container ornamental production industry, where weeds not only compete with crops for limited resources but also harbor pests and pathogens, thereby diminishing plant quality and marketability. The paper explores the economic impact of weed infestations, herbicide resistance development, and the limited availability of selective herbicides for ornamental crops in the United States. This review synthesizes current chemical weed control tactics, focusing not only on both preemergence and postemergence herbicides commonly used in ornamental nurseries, but also organic alternatives and integrated weed management (IWM) approaches as complementary strategies by evaluating their effectiveness, crop safety, and usage. There is a critical need for research in the areas of alternative chemical options such as insecticides, miticides (e.g., Zerotol and Tetra Curb Max), and organic products for liverwort control in greenhouses. Although essential oils and plant-based extracts show some potential, their effectiveness and practical use remain largely unexplored. Full article
