Flammulina filiformis, one of the most delicious and commercially important mushrooms, demonstrates remarkable adaptability to diverse agricultural wastes. However, it is unclear how different substrates affect the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass and the production of lignocellulolytic enzymes in F. filiformis. In this study, label-free comparative proteomic analysis of F. filiformis cultivated on sugarcane bagasse, cotton seed shells, corn cobs, and glucose substrates was conducted to identify degradation mechanism across various substrates. Label-free quantitative proteomics identified 1104 proteins. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis of protein expression differences were predominantly enriched in energy metabolism and carbohydrate metabolic pathways. Detailed characterization of carbohydrate-active enzymes among the identified proteins revealed glucanase (GH7, A0A067NSK0) as the key enzyme. F. filiformis secreted higher levels of cellulases and hemicellulases on sugarcane bagasse substrate. In the cotton seed shells substrate, multiple cellulases functioned collaboratively, while in the corn cobs substrate, glucanase predominated among the cellulases. These findings reveal the enzymatic strategies and metabolic flexibility of F. filiformis in lignocellulose utilization, providing novel insights for metabolic engineering applications in biotechnology. The study establishes a theoretical foundation for optimizing biomass conversion and developing innovative substrates using targeted enzyme systems. Full article

Developing a more efficient, cleaner, and energy-saving pretreatment process is the primary goal for lignocellulosic biofuels production. This study demonstrated the feasibility of circulating high-concentration acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) obtained via in situ product recovery (ISPR) as a pretreatment liquor. Taking ABE solvent separated from pervaporation (PV) and gas stripping (GS) as examples, results indicated that under dilute alkaline (1% NaOH) catalysis, the highly recalcitrant lignocellulosic matrices can be efficiently depolymerized, thereby improving fermentable sugars recovery in saccharification stage and ABE yield in subsequent fermentation stage. Results also revealed delignification of 91.5% (stream from PV) and 94.3% (stream from GS), with total monosaccharides recovery rates of 56.5% and 57.1%, respectively, can be realized when using corn stover as feedstock. Coupled with ABE fermentation, mass balance indicated a maximal 106.6 g of ABE (65.8 g butanol) can be produced from 1 kg of dry corn stover by circulating the GS condensate in pretreatment (the optimized pretreatment conditions were 1% w/v alkali and 160 °C for 1 h). Additionally, technical lignin with low molecular weight and narrow distribution was isolated, which enabled further side-stream valorisation. Therefore, integrating ISPR product circulation with lignocellulosic biobutanol shows strong potential for application under the concept of biorefinery. Full article

The utilisation of agrifood waste ashes has the potential to enhance the nutrient content of cereal crops, thereby optimising both yield and grain quality. This study investigated rye grain composition, the fermentation efficiency, and volatile compounds in mashes made from crops fertilised with agrifood waste ashes derived from the combustion of corn cob, wood chips, and biomass with defecation lime. The ashes were applied at 2, 4, and 8 t/ha, separately and as mixtures of corn cob (25%) with wood chips (75%) and corn cob (50%) with biomass and defecation lime (50%). Rye mashes were prepared using the pressureless starch liberation method. The starch content in the majority of the rye grains was comparable to the control sample (57.12 g/100 g). The range of ethanol concentrations observed in the fermented mashes was from 55.55 to 68.12 g/L, which corresponded to fermentation yields of 67.25–76.59% of theoretical. The lowest fermentation yield was exhibited by the mash derived from rye cultivated on soil fertilised with a 50:50 mixture of ashes from corn cob and biomass with defecation lime at 8 t/ha. This mash contained more than double the acetaldehyde concentration and total aldehyde content compared to the other samples. These findings demonstrate the potential of using waste biomass ash as a source of macro- and microelements for rye cultivation, enabling the production of agricultural distillates. To ensure high fermentation efficiency and low aldehyde levels, ash dosage and composition need to be established based on experimental optimisation. Full article

The use of chemical pesticides in agriculture has led to the development of resistant pest populations, posing a challenge to long-term pest management. This review aims to evaluate the scientific literature on the individual and combined use of baculoviruses with conventional chemical and biological insecticides to combat Plutella xylostella, Spodoptera exigua, and Spodoptera frugiperda in broccoli, tomato, and maize crops. Notable findings include that both individual Plutella xylostella nucleopolyhedrovirus (PxNPV) and the combination of Plutella xylostella granulovirus (PxGV) and azadirachtin at a low dose effectively control Plutella xylostella; both combinations of Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) with emamectin benzoate and chlorfenapyr reduced resistance in Spodoptera exigua and increased the efficacy of the insecticides; and the combination of Spodoptera frugiperda nucleopolyhedrovirus (SfMNPV) and spinetoram is effective against Spodoptera frugiperda. Integrating baculoviruses into pest management strategies offers a promising approach to mitigate the adverse effects of chemical pesticides, such as resistance development, health risks, and environmental damage. However, there remains a broad spectrum of research opportunities regarding the use of baculoviruses in agriculture. Full article

Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) can cause detrimental health effects. The consumption of contaminated food is viewed as a major exposure pathway for humans, but the relationship between agriculture and PFASs has not been investigated thoroughly, and it is becoming a pressing issue since health advisories are continuously being reassessed. This semi-systematic literature review connects the release, environmental fate, and agriculture uptake of PFASs to enhance comprehension and identify knowledge gaps which limit accurate risk assessment. It focuses on the heavily agricultural state of Minnesota, USA, which is representative of the large Midwestern US Corn Belt in terms of agricultural activities, because PFASs have been monitored in Minnesota since the beginning of the 21st century. PFAS contamination is a complex issue due to the over 14,000 individual PFAS compounds which have unique chemical properties that interact differently with air, water, soil, and biological systems. Moreover, the lack of field studies and monitoring of agricultural sites makes accurate risk assessments challenging. Researchers, policymakers, and farmers must work closely together to reduce the risk of PFAS exposure as the understanding of their potential health effects increases and legacy PFASs are displaced with shorter fluorinated replacements. An Evaluation of Food Security and Grain Production Trends in the Arid Region of Northwest China (2000–2035)

Food security is crucial for social stability and economic development. Ensuring food security in the arid region of Northwest China presents unique challenges due to limited water and soil resources. This study addresses these challenges by integrating a comprehensive water and soil resource matching assessment with grain production forecasting. Based on data from 2000 to 2020, this research projects the food security status to 2035 using the GM(1,1) model, incorporating a comprehensive index of soil and water resource matching and regression analysis to inform production forecasts. Key assumptions include continued historical trends in population growth, urbanization, and dietary shifts towards an increased animal protein consumption. The findings revealed a consistent upward trend in grain production from 2000 to 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 3.5%. Corn and wheat emerged as the dominant grain crops. Certain provinces demonstrated comparative advantages for specific crops like rice and wheat. The most significant finding is that despite the projected growth in the total grain output by 2035 compared to 2020, the regional grain self-sufficiency rate is projected to range from 79.6% to 84.1%, falling below critical food security benchmarks set by the FAO and China. This projected shortfall carries significant implications, underscoring a serious challenge to regional food security and highlighting the region’s increasing vulnerability to external food supply fluctuations. The findings strongly signal that current trends are insufficient and necessitate urgent and proactive policy interventions. To address this, practical policy recommendations include promoting water-saving technologies, enhancing regional cooperation, and strategically utilizing the international grain trade to ensure regional food security. Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii (Pss) is a Gram-negative bacterium first documented in North America, and is the causal agent of Stewart’s disease in maize (Zea mays), especially in sweet corn. First identified in North America, it is primarily spread by insect vectors like the corn flea beetle (Chaetocnema Pulicaria) in the United States. However, Pss has since spread globally—reaching parts of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe—mainly through the international seed trade. Although this trade is limited, it has still facilitated the pathogen’s global movement, as evidenced by numerous phytosanitary interceptions. Recent studies in Italy, as indicated in the EFSA journal, reported that potential alternative vectors were identified, including Phyllotreta spp. and the invasive Asian brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys); the latter tested positive in PCR screenings, raising concerns due to its broad host range and global distribution. This information has prompted studies to verify the ability of Halyomorpha halys to vector Pss to assess the risk and prevent the further spread of Pss in Europe. In this study, we explored the potential transmission of Pss by the brown marmorated stink bugs in maize plants, following its feeding on Pss-inoculated maize, as well as the presence of Pss within the insect’s body. Stress fields imparted with an ultrafast laser can correct low spatial frequency surface figure error of mirrors through ultrafast laser stress figuring (ULSF): the formation of nanograting structures within the bulk substrate generates localized stress, creating bending moments that equilibrize via wafer deformation. For ULSF to be used as an optical figuring process, the ultrafast laser generated stress must be effectively permanent or risk unwanted figure drift. Two isochronal annealing experiments were performed to measure ultrafast laser-generated stress stability in fused silica and Corning ultra-low expansion (ULE) wafers. The first experiment tracked changes to induced astigmatism up to 1000 °C on 25.4 mm-diameter wafers. Only small changes were measured after each thermal cycle up to 500 °C for both materials, but significant changes were observed at higher temperatures. The second experiment tracked stress changes in fused silica and ULE up to 500 °C but with 4 to 16× higher signal-to-noise ratio. Change in trefoil on 100 mm-diameter wafers was measured, and the induced stress in fused silica and ULE was found to be stable after thermal cycling up to 300 °C and 200 °C, respectively, with larger changes at higher temperatures. Arabinoxylan is a polysaccharide with film-forming properties, present in corn fiber, and a low-value by-product. The extract has a deep brown color, producing films of the same shade, which may not be appealing. This study addresses, for the first time, the adsorption of colored compounds present in an arabinoxylan extract using resin MN102. The resin successfully adsorbed the colored compounds from the arabinoxylan extract. After four consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles, the efficiency of the resin was similar, only decreasing from 63.3% to 52.9%. Langmuir and Freundlich models were fitted to the results of adsorption isotherm experiments, with the Freundlich model demonstrating the best fit to the experimental results. A fixed-bed column loaded with the resin was used for the removal of the colored compounds from the arabinoxylan extract, and the effect of the volumetric flow rate was investigated. The Yan and log-Gompertz models showed the best fit to the experimental breakthrough curves. This study systematically evaluated the adsorption conditions, providing a comprehensive analysis of the performance of the resin in the removal of the colored compounds. Additionally, the ability of the extract to maintain its film-forming properties after decolorization was evaluated, and some of the film’s key characteristics were evaluated, namely its color, solubility in water and mechanical properties. Conspicuous declines in native grassland habitats have triggered sharp reductions in grassland birds, dragonflies, butterflies, and native plant populations and diversity. We compared these biotic groups among three crop type treatments: corn, alfalfa, and a perennial native grass, Virginia wild rye, (Elymus virginicus L.) or VWR. This crop type had 2-3X higher bird, dragonfly, butterfly and plant species richness, diversity, and faunal abundance relative to alfalfa and corn types. VWR crop fields also support more obligate grassland bird species and higher populations of dragonfly and butterfly species associated with grasslands and wet meadows. In contrast, the corn and alfalfa types support few or no obligatory grassland birds and mostly non-native insects such as the white cabbage looper (Artogeia rapae L.), the common yellow sulfur butterfly (Colias philodice Godart.), and the mobile and migratory common green darner dragonfly (Anax junius Drury.). In sum, the VWR perennial native grass crop type offers a special opportunity to improve the diversity and abundance of grassland bird species, beneficial insect species, and many native plant species within agricultural landscapes. Hydrogels are widely known for their ability to increase soil water retention and for their potential slow nutrient release mechanism. They have been constantly improved to meet the growing demand for sustainability in agriculture. Research focused on the development of biodegradable hydrogels, produced from industrial cellulose waste, are an ecological and efficient alternative soil ameliorant for the improvement of agricultural land. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of two types of hydrogel (processed in a glass reactor versus a twin-screw extruder) on soils with different textures (clay and sandy loam), testing their water retention capacity, nitrogen leaching, and effects on seed germination. The methodology included the evaluation of water retention capacity at different pressures with different hydrogel addition rates in the soil, leaching tests in columns filled with soil and hydrogel layers, and germination tests of sorghum and corn. The results indicated that the addition of hydrogel significantly improved water retention, especially in sandy loam soils. The hydrogels also reduced nitrogen leaching, acting as nitrification inhibitors and limiting the conversion of ammonium to nitrate, with greater effectiveness in clayey soils. In the tested formulations, it was observed that the hydrogel doses applied to the columns favored nitrogen retention in the region close to the roots, directly influencing the initial stages of germination. This behavior highlights the potential of hydrogels as tools for directing nutrients in the soil profile, indicating that adjustments to the C:N ratio, nutrient release rate, and applied doses can optimize their application for different crops. The cecal microbiota is essential for intestinal health and performance. This study describes the succession patterns of the cecal microbiota in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) until 42 days of age. Sixty quails were raised using standard conditions and fed corn–soybean meal diets. Cecal contents were sampled from five birds weekly from 7 to 42 days of age and submitted to Illumina 16S rRNA sequencing for metabarcoding analysis. Diversity and functional prediction were carried out with QIIME2, PICRUSt2, STAMP and MicrobiomeAnalyst 2.0. Firmicutes increased from 50% at 7 days to more than 80% at 42 days, whereas Bacteroidota decreased from 45% to 12% in the same period. Alpha diversity progressively increased with age, indicating a richer and more balanced microbiota at later ages. Genera such as Bacteroides were predominant in the beginning and later were replaced by Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcus and Faecalibacterium. These developmental taxonomic features aligned with significant shifts in ten metabolic pathways identified by prediction, revealing a transition from biosynthetic functions to complex carbohydrate metabolism and cell wall biosynthesis. The first seven days are considered a critical window for probiotics intervention, which may favor the establishment of a microbiota that is more stable and beneficial to quail performance. Threshold Effects of Straw Returning Amounts on Bacterial Colonization in Black Soil

Straw returning (ST) significantly improves soil quality and profoundly impacts soil microorganisms. However, the effects of different ST application amounts on the soil bacterial community remain unclear, and more studies on optimal ST application amounts are warranted. This study aimed to investigate the bacterial diversity and composition, as well as physicochemical properties, of soil in a corn field with 5-year ST amounts of 0, 3, 4.5, 5, and 6 t/hm2, respectively. The results indicated that ST significantly reduced soil bulk density and increased soil pH and nutrients. Meanwhile, ST had a significant effect on the bacterial composition, and the bacterial diversity increased significantly after ST. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria increased dramatically, whereas that of Actinobacteria significantly decreased after ST. The amount of ST had threshold effects on soil physicochemical properties and the dominant bacterial phyla. Moreover, the co-occurrence networks indicated that bacterial stability first increased and then decreased with the increase in ST amounts. Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen concentrations were the main drivers of bacterial diversity, whereas soil pH and total nitrogen concentrations were the main drivers of bacterial composition. This study strengthens the fact that ST amounts have threshold effects on the soil physicochemical properties and soil microorganisms, and ST amounts of 3–5 t/hm2 were appropriate. Full article

To address freshwater scarcity and the underutilization of low-saline water in the North China Plain, a field study was conducted to evaluate the effects of alternating sprinkler irrigation using saline and fresh water on soil water–salt dynamics and corn growth. Two salinity levels (3 and 5 g·L−1, representing S1 and S2, respectively) and three irrigation strategies—saline–fresh–saline–fresh (F1), saline–fresh (F2), and mixed saline–fresh (F3)—were tested, resulting in six treatments: S1F1, S1F2, S1F3, S2F1, S2F2, and S2F3. S1F1 significantly improved soil water retention at a 30–50 cm depth and reduced surface electrical conductivity (EC) and Na+ concentration (p < 0.05). S1F1 also promoted more uniform Mg2+ distribution and limited Ca2+ loss. Under high salinity (5 g·L−1), surface salt accumulation and ion concentration (Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+) increased, particularly in S2F3. Corn growth under alternating irrigation (F1/F2) outperformed the mixed mode (F3), with S1F1 achieving the highest plant height, leaf area, grain number, and 100-grain weight. The S1F1 yield surpassed others by 0.4–3.0% and maintained a better ion balance. These results suggest that alternating irrigation with low-salinity water (S1F1) effectively regulates root-zone salinity and improves crop productivity, offering a practical strategy for the sustainable use of low-saline water resources. This study evaluated the production performance and egg quality of Lohmann Brown laying hens fed diets containing different levels of Corn Bran with Solubles (CBS). A total of 144 hens aged 44 weeks were assigned to three treatments in a completely randomized design, with eight replicates per treatment and six birds per replicate. The experimental treatments included diets with CBS inclusion levels of 0%, 5%, and 10%. The experiment lasted 84 days (44 to 55 weeks of age). Data were analyzed via one-way ANOVA, with mean differences evaluated using Tukey’s HSD test (α = 0.05). No significant effects were observed for laying rate, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, or egg mass (p > 0.05). However, egg quality parameters such as shell percentage, shell weight per unit surface area (SWUSA), and yolk color were influenced by the treatments (p < 0.05). Hens fed diets with 5% CBS exhibited higher shell percentage and SWUSA compared to those on the 0% CBS diet. Yolk color intensity increased with higher CBS inclusion levels. In conclusion, incorporating up to 10% CBS in corn–soybean meal diets for laying hens can enhance egg yolk pigmentation. Notably, including 5% CBS improves eggshell quality. Full article
