In this study, typical haze pollution influenced by biomass burning (BB) activities in Changsha in the autumn of 2024 was investigated through the mixing state and evolution process of BB particles via the real-time measurement of single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SPAMS). From the clean period to the haze period, the PM2.5 concentration increased from 25 μg·m−3 at 12:00 to 273 μg·m−3 at 21:00 on 12 October, and the proportion of total BB single particles in the total detected particles increased from 17.2% to 54%. This indicates that the rapid increase in PM2.5 concentration was accompanied by a concurrent increase in the contribution of particles originating from BB sources. The detected BB particles were classified into two types based on their mixing states and temporal variations: BB1 and BB2, which accounted for 71.7% and 28.3% of the total BB particles, respectively. The analysis of backward trajectories and fire spots suggested that BB1 particles originated from straw burning emissions at northern Changsha, while BB2 particles were primarily related to local nighttime cooking emissions in Changsha. In addition, a special type of K-containing single particles without K cluster ions was found closely associated with BB1 type particles, which were designated as secondarily processed BB particles (BB-sec). The BB-sec particles contained abundant sulfate and ammonium signals and showed lagged appearance after the peak of BB1-type particles, which was possibly due to the aging and formation of ammonium sulfate on the freshly emitted particles. In all, this study provides insights into understanding the substantial impact of BB sources on regional air quality during the crop harvest season and the appropriate disposal of crop straw, including conversion into high-efficiency fuel through secondary processing or clean energy via biological fermentation, which is of great significance for the mitigation of local haze pollution. There is still a need to develop scenarios and models aimed at substituting fuelwood and reducing the use of fossil fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), on which low-income rural households in the Global South often depend. The use of these fuels for cooking and heating in domestic and productive activities poses significant health and environmental risks. This study validated, in three different phases, the sustainability of a model for the production and use of biogas from the treatment of swine-rearing wastewater (WWs) on a community farm: (i) A Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA), incorporating environmental, social/health, technical, and economic criteria, identified the main weighted criterion to C8 (use of small-scale technologies and low-cost access), with a score of 0.44 points, as well as the Tubular biodigester (Tb) as the most suitable option for the study area, scoring 8.1 points. (ii) Monitoring of the Tb over 90 days showed an average biogas production of 2.6 m3 d−1, with average correlation 0.21 m3 Biogas kg Biomass−1. Using the experimental biogas production rate (k = 0.0512 d−1), the process was simulated with the BgMod model, achieving an average deviation of only 10.4% during the final production phase. (iii) The quantification of benefits demonstrated significant reductions in firewood use: in Scenario S1 (kitchen energy needs), biogas replaced 83.1% of firewood, while in Scenario S2 (citronella essential oil production), the substitution rate was 24.1%. In both cases, the avoided emissions amounted to 0.52 tons of CO2eq per month. Finally, this study proposes a synthesised, community-based rural biogas framework designed for replication in regions with similar socio-environmental, technical, and economic conditions. Regulatory air pollution monitoring is performed using a sparse monitoring network designed to provide background concentrations of pollutants but may miss small area variations due to local emission sources. Low-cost air pollution sensors operated by trained citizen scientists provide an opportunity to fill this gap. We describe the development and implementation of an air pollution monitoring and community engagement plan in response to resident concerns regarding excessive smoke production from a neighborhood restaurant. Particulate matter (PM2.5) was measured using a low-cost, portable sensor. When cooking was taking place, the highest PM2.5 readings were within 50 m of the source (mean PM2.5 36.9 µg/m3) versus greater than 50 m away (mean PM2.5 13.0 µg/m3). Sharing results with local government officials did not result in any action to address the source of the smoke emissions, due to lack of jurisdiction. A review of air pollution regulations across the United States indicated that only seven states regulate food cookers and six states specifically exempted cookers from air pollution regulations. Concerns about the smoke were communicated with the restaurant owner who eventually changed the cooking fuel. Following this change, less smoke was observed from the restaurant and PM2.5 measurements were reduced to background levels. Although current environmental health regulations may not protect residents living near sources of food cooker-based sources of PM2.5, community engagement shows promise in addressing these emissions. Waste cooking oil (WCO) plays different roles in modified asphalt and significantly affects the performance of the binder. However, a systematic comparative study is still lacking in the existing research. This study investigates the effects of WCO used as a swelling agent for rubber powder (RP) and as a compatibilizer in rubber powder-modified asphalt (RPMA) on the performance of modified asphalt. Specifically, the microstructure and functional groups of WCO-coated RP were first characterized. Then, RPMAs with different RP dosages were prepared, and the storage stability and rheological properties of RPMAs were thoroughly investigated. Finally, the flue gas emission characteristics of different RPMAs at 30% RP dosing were further analyzed, and the corresponding inhibition mechanisms were proposed. The results showed that the RP coated by WCO was fully solubilized internally, and the WCO formed a uniform and continuous coating film on the RP surface. Comparative analysis revealed that when WCO was used as a swelling agent, the prepared S-RPMA exhibited superior storage stability. At a 30% RP content, the softening point difference value of S-RPMA was only 1.8 °C, and the reduction rate of the segregation index reached 40.91%. Surprisingly, after WCO was used to coat the RP, the average concentrations of VOCs and H2S in S-RPMA30 were reduced to 146.7 mg/m3 and 10.6 ppm, respectively, representing decreases of 20.8% and 22.1% compared with the original RPMA30. These findings demonstrate that using WCO as a swelling agent enhances both the physical stability and environmental performance of RPMA, offering valuable insights for the rational application and optimization of WCO incorporation methods in asphalt modification. It also makes meaningful contributions to the fields of coating science and sustainable materials engineering. Full article

Rural areas around the world are increasingly dealing with energy and environmental challenges. These challenges are particularly acute in developing countries, where persistent reliance on traditional energy sources—such as wood fuel—intersects with concerns about forest conservation and energy sustainability. While wood fuel use is often portrayed as unsustainable, it is important to acknowledge that much of it remains ecologically viable and socially embedded. This study explores the role of rural entrepreneurs in shaping low-carbon transitions at the intersection of household energy practices and environmental stewardship. Fieldwork was carried out in four rural Zambian communities in 2016 and complemented by 2024 follow-up reports. It examines the connections between household energy choices, greenhouse gas emissions, and forest resource dynamics. Findings reveal that over 60% of rural households rely on charcoal for cooking, with associated emissions estimated between 80 and 150 kg CO2 per household per month. Although this is significantly lower than the average per capita carbon footprint in industrialized countries, such emissions are primarily biogenic in nature. While rural communities contribute minimally to global climate change, their practices have significant local environmental consequences. This study draws attention to the structural constraints as well as emerging opportunities within Zambia’s rural energy economy. It positions rural entrepreneurs not merely as policy recipients but as active agents of innovation, environmental monitoring, and participatory resource governance. A model is proposed to support sustainable rural energy transitions by aligning forest management with context-sensitive emissions strategies. Full article

This study creates and tests a machine learning model that can predict fuel use and emissions (NOx, CO2, CO, HC, PN) from a marine internal combustion engine when it is running normally. The model learned from data collected from conventional diesel fuel experiments. Subsequently, we evaluated its ability to transfer by employing the parameters associated with waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel and its 60/40 diesel mixture. The machine learning model demonstrated exceptional proficiency in forecasting diesel mode (R2 > 0.95), effectively encapsulating both long-term trends and short-term fluctuations in fuel consumption and emissions across various load regimes. Upon the incorporation of WCO data, the model maintained its capacity to identify trends; however, it persistently overestimated emissions of CO, HC, and PN. This discrepancy arose primarily from the differing chemical composition of the fuel, particularly in terms of oxygen content and density. A significant correlation existed between indicators of incomplete combustion and the utilization of fuel. Nonetheless, NOx exhibited an inverse relationship with indicators of combustion efficiency. The findings indicate that the model possesses the capability to estimate emissions in real time, requiring only a modest amount of additional training to operate effectively with alternative fuels. This approach significantly diminishes the necessity for prolonged experimental endeavors, rendering it an invaluable asset for the formulation of fuel strategies and initiatives aimed at mitigating carbon emissions in maritime operations. Petroleum-based insulating liquids have traditionally been used in the electrical industry for cooling and insulation. However, their environmental drawbacks, such as non-biodegradability and ecological risks, have led to increasing regulatory restrictions. As a sustainable alternative, vegetable-based insulating liquids have gained attention due to their biodegradability, non-toxicity to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and lower carbon emissions. Adopting vegetable-based insulating liquids also aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 and 13, which focus on cleaner energy sources and reducing carbon emissions. Despite these benefits, most commercially available vegetable-based insulating liquids are derived from edible seed oils, raising concerns about food security and the environmental footprint of large-scale agricultural production, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. In recent years, waste cooking oils (WCOs) have emerged as a promising resource for industrial applications through waste-to-value conversion processes. However, their potential as transformer insulating liquids remains largely unexplored due to limited research and available data. This review explores the feasibility of utilizing waste cooking oils as green transformer insulating liquids. It examines the conversion and purification processes required to enhance their suitability for insulation applications, evaluates their dielectric and thermal performance, and assesses their potential implementation in transformers based on existing literature. The objective is to provide a comprehensive assessment of waste cooking oil as an alternative insulating liquid, highlight key challenges associated with its adoption, and outline future research directions to optimize its properties for high-voltage transformer applications. Forest fires are a global environmental threat to human life and ecosystems. This study compiles smoke alarm images from five high-definition surveillance cameras in Foshan City, Guangdong, China, collected over one year, to create a smoke-based early warning dataset. The dataset presents two key challenges: (1) high false positive rates caused by pseudo-smoke interference, including non-fire conditions like cooking smoke and industrial emissions, and (2) significant regional data imbalances, influenced by varying human activity intensities and terrain features, which impair the generalizability of traditional pre-train–fine-tune strategies. To address these challenges, we explore the use of visual language models to differentiate between true alarms and false alarms. Additionally, our method incorporates a prompt tuning strategy which helps to improve performance by at least 12.45% in zero-shot learning tasks and also enhances performance in few-shot learning tasks, demonstrating enhanced regional generalization compared to baselines. Anaerobic digestion (AD) offers a sustainable solution by treating biodegradable waste while recovering bioenergy, enhancing the share of renewable energy. Thus, this study aims to investigate the AD for managing and valorizing residues from the potato chip industry: potato peel (PP), potato offcuts (OC), waste cooking oil (WCO), wastewater (WW), and sewage sludge (SS). In particular, the biochemical methane potential (BMP) of each residue, anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of an AD plant are assessed. WW, OC, and SS present a BMP of around 232–280 NmLCH4/kg of volatile solids (VS). PP and WCO reach a BMP slightly lower than the former substrates (174–202 NmLCH4/gVS). AcoD results in methane yields between 150 and 250 NmLCH4/gVS. An up-scaled anaerobic digester is designed to manage 1.60 Mg/d of PP. A residence time of 12 days and a digester with 165 m3 is estimated, yielding 14 Nm3CH4/MgVS/d. A simulated AD plant integrated with a combined heat and power unit results in a carbon footprint of 542 kg of CO2-eq/Mgdb PP, primarily from biogenic GHG emissions. These findings highlight the potential of AD to generate renewable energy from potato industry residues while reducing fossil fuel-related GHG emissions and promoting resource circularity. A wide experimental campaign was developed on an automotive turbocharged diesel engine, using two blends between diesel oil and waste cooking oil methyl esters (WCOME) and neat biodiesel. A conventional B7 diesel oil was considered as a reference fuel. The two blends, respectively, included 40 and 70% of WCOME, on a volumetric basis. The influence of biodiesel was analyzed by testing the engine in two part-load operating conditions, applying proper control strategies to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) circuit and rail pressure, to assess the interactions between the engine management and the tested fuels. The variable nozzle turbine (VNT) was controlled to obtain a constant level of intake pressure in the two experimental points. Referring to biodiesel effects at constant operating mode, higher WCOME content generally resulted in better efficiency and soot emission, while NOX emission was negatively affected. EGR activation allowed for limited NO formation but with penalties in soot emission. Furthermore, interactions between the EGR circuit and turbocharger operations and control led to higher fuel consumption and lower efficiency. Finally, the increase in rail pressure corresponded to better soot emission and penalties in NOX emission. Combining all these effects, the selection of EGR rate and rail pressure values higher than the standard levels resulted in better efficiency, NOX, and soot emissions when comparing blends and neat biodiesel to conventional B7, granting advantages not only with regard to greenhouse gas emissions. Combustion parameters were also assessed, showing that combustion stability and combustion noise were not negatively affected by biodiesel use. Combustion duration was reduced when using WCOME and its blend, even if the center of combustion was slightly shifted along the expansion stroke. The main contribution of this investigation to the scientific and technical knowledge on biodiesel application to internal combustion engines is related to the development of tests on diesel–biodiesel blends with high WCOME content or neat WCOME, identifying their effects on NOX emissions, the definition of integrated strategies of HP EGR system, fuel rail pressure, and VNT for the simultaneous reduction in NOX and soot emissions, and the detailed assessment of the influence of biodiesel on a wide range of combustion parameters. Cooking food is a factor that contributes to global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This research proposes the design, simulation using thermal resistances with MATLAB Simulink, and experimental evaluation of an automated double-concentrated solar cooking system operable from inside a home. Water was used as a cooking load. Each test for 25 min was entered into a system integrated by a programmable elevator to transport the food to the roof, a configurable temperature display, a photovoltaic power source, and double solar collection (direct through a modified box oven and reflected by a parabolic dish collector). When both solar components operated simultaneously, the system reached a temperature of 79 °C, representing a 57.34 °C increase. On average, the solar concentrator provided 78.02% more energy than the oven alone. This approach is expected to reduce cooking time and contribute to sustainable home design aimed at mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Full article

With conventional fuels dwindling and emissions rising, there is a necessity to develop and assess innovative substitute fuel for compression ignition (CI) engines. This study investigates the potential of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles as a sustainable additive to enhance the performance and reduce emissions of used cooking oil (UCO) biodiesel–diesel blends in CI engines. MgO nanoparticles were biosynthesized using Citrus aurantium peel extract, offering an environmentally friendly production method. A single-cylinder CI engine was used to test the performance of diesel fuel (B0), a 20% biodiesel blend (B20), and B20 blends with 30 ppm (B20M30) and 60 ppm (B20M60) MgO nanoparticles. Engine performance parameters (brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC), and exhaust gas temperature (EGT)) and emission characteristics (CO, NOx, unburnt hydrocarbons (HCs), and smoke opacity) were measured. The B20M60 blend showed a 2.38% reduction in BSFC and a 3.38% increase in BTE compared to B20, with significant reductions in unburnt HC, CO, and smoke opacity. However, NOx emissions increased by 6.57%. Seasonal, diurnal, and site-to-site variations in indoor PM2.5 concentrations in Akure, a city in southwestern Nigeria, are investigated by continuous observations using low-cost sensors in six households. Significant seasonal variations were observed, with the highest monthly PM2.5 concentrations occurring in the dry season, both indoors and outdoors. Significant seasonal variations with higher PM2.5 levels during the dry season were observed, with mean PM2.5 concentrations of 55 μg/m3 in the kitchen and 48 μg/m3 in the living rooms, compared to those during the wet season (23 μg/m3 in the kitchen and 14 μg/m3 in the living rooms). The kitchen-to-outdoor and indoor-to-outdoor PM2.5 ratios increased particularly during the morning and evening hours at several sites, suggesting significant contributions from cooking activities in the kitchen, as well as the transfer of PM2.5 into the living room. An assessment of PM2.5 exposure risks among 32 residents in the studied households revealed higher risks among individuals who cook routinely. This study underscores the importance of addressing indoor air pollution alongside outdoor pollution, particularly by improving ventilation and reducing cooking emissions, to effectively minimize exposure risks. Background/Objectives: The consumption of microwave ready meals has increased significantly in recent years due to a noticeable reduction in the available time to spend cooking. However, one of the issues about this type of diet is its nutrient intake. The main objective of this study was to determine the content of macroelements (Na, K, Ca, and Mg) in samples of animal origin (omelette, chicken curry, meatballs, shredded meat, and prawns), vegetable origin (vegetable garnish, round rice, pesto pasta, cream of vegetable soup, and chickpeas with spinach), and mixed origin (pizza, lasagna, seafood paella, cannelloni, and spaghetti Bolognese). Methods: The macroelement content was determined by ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma—Optical Emission Spectrometry) in 288 samples of different microwave foods. Results: Likewise, the possible difference in the content of macroelements after the microwave heating process was studied, and significant differences in the Ca content were observed in the three analyzed food groups, indicating that there may have been migration from the container to the food. The concentrations of Na and Ca in the tails of garlic prawns (9381 ± 3102 mg Na/kg fw and 845 ± 134 mg Ca/kg fw) stood out. The vegetable side dish stood out for its higher concentration of K (3424 ± 1319 mg/kg fw). Pizza registered the highest concentrations of the four macrolements within the group of foods of mixed origin. The study of the dietary intake indicated that the consumption of some animal-based products offered a contribution to the safe and adequate intake of Na of almost 50%, which could pose a risk of dietary overdose as Na is an element found in many foods. Conclusions: It is recommended to moderate the consumption of some of the dishes analyzed mainly because of the risk of the high intake of Na. Full article

Air quality simulations were performed for Athens (Greece) in ~1 km resolution applying the models WRF-CAMx for July and December 2019 with the secondary organic aerosol processor (SOAP) and volatility basis set (VBS) organic aerosol (OA) schemes. CAMx results were evaluated against particulate matter (PM) and OA concentrations from the regulatory monitoring network and research monitoring sites (including PM2.5 low-cost sensors). The repartition of primary OA (POA) and secondary OA (SOA) by CAMx was compared with positive matrix factorization (PMF)-resolved OA components based on aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) measurements. In July, OA concentrations underestimation was decreased by up to 24% with VBS. In December, VBS introduced small negative biases or resulted in more pronounced (but moderate) underestimations of OA with respect to SOAP. CAMx performance for POA was much better than for SOA, while VBS decreased the overestimation of POA and the underestimation of SOA in both study periods. Despite the SOA concentrations increases by VBS, CAMx still considerably underestimated SOA (e.g., by 65% in July). Better representation of simulated OA concentrations in Athens could benefit by accounting for the missing cooking emissions, by improvements in the biomass burning emissions, or by detailed integration of processes related to OA chemical aging.
