Promoting energy efficiency in the Italian production sector is significantly hampered by the lack of knowledge, the scarcity and the limited distribution of tools for supporting energy audits in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in a wide range of Italian economic sectors (industry, tertiary sector, transport). The Advanced Tool for ENErgy Audit for SMEs, ATENEA4SME, is intended to help SMEs promote energy-efficiency projects, supports energy audits and self-evaluation of energy consumption. The tool uses an original mathematical model that takes into account the results of questionnaires and a multi-criteria analysis to generate recommendations for energy efficiency investments. This article will give a thorough explanation of the tool, emphasizing and outlining the sections as well as the procedures to get the ultimate summary of the energy usage of the enterprises under investigation and the potential for energy saving. From a technological and financial perspective, the tool helps to remove obstacles to the development of energy-efficiency measures. In this article, the IT and methodological structure of the tool will therefore be extensively described, and its operation for the context of SMEs will be illustrated, with application cases. Ample space will be allocated to the dissemination campaign and the replicability of the tool for all economic sectors of the industrial and tertiary sectors. Full article

Plastic pollution is a growing environmental and social concern, particularly in Southeast Asia, where urban rivers serve as key pathways for transporting waste to marine environments. This scoping review examines 110 peer-reviewed studies to understand how plastic pollution in waterways is being researched, addressed, and reconceptualized. Drawing from the literature across environmental science, technology, and social studies, we identify four interconnected areas of focus: urban pollution pathways, innovations in monitoring and methods, community-based interventions, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Our analysis combines qualitative synthesis with visual mapping techniques, including keyword co-occurrence networks, to explore how real-time tools, such as IoT sensors, multi-sensor systems, and geospatial technologies, are transforming the ways plastic waste is tracked and analyzed. The review also considers the growing use of novel theoretical frameworks, such as post-phenomenology and ecological materialism, to better understand the role of plastics as both pollutants and ecological agents. Despite progress, the literature reveals persistent gaps in longitudinal studies, regional representation, and policy translation, particularly across the Global South. We emphasize the value of participatory models and community-led research in bridging these gaps and advancing more inclusive and responsive solutions. These insights inform the development of plastic tracker technologies currently being piloted in Vietnam and contribute to broader sustainability goals, including SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Photovoltaic (PV) micro-installations producing renewable electricity and automatic pellet boilers producing renewable heat energy are promising solutions for single-family houses. A single-family house equipped with a prosumer 7.56 kWp PV micro-installation and a 26 kW pellet boiler was analyzed. This study aimed to analyze the production and use of electricity and heat over three successive years (from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2023) and to identify opportunities for securing renewable energy supply for the house. Electricity production by the PV was, on average, 6481 kWh year−1; the amount of energy fed into the grid was 4907 kWh year−1; and the electricity consumption by the house was 4606 kWh year−1. The electricity supply for the house was secured by drawing an average of 34.2% of energy directly from the PV and 85.2% from the grid. Based on mathematical modeling, it was determined that if the PV installation had been located to the south (azimuth 180°) in the analyzed period, the maximum average production would have been 6897 kWh. Total annual heat and electricity consumption by the house over three years amounted, on average, to 39,059 kWh year−1. Heat energy accounted for a dominant proportion of 88.2%. From a year-round perspective, a properly selected small multi-energy installation can ensure energy self-sufficiency and provide renewable energy to a single-family house. Full article

The dramatic increase in urban construction waste poses severe environmental challenges. Utilizing waste concrete to produce recycled aggregates (RA) for manufacturing recycled concrete (RC) represents an effective strategy for resource utilization. However, inherent defects in RA, such as high porosity, microcracks, and adherent old mortar layers, lead to significant performance degradation of the resulting RC, limiting its widespread application. Traditional methods for enhancing RA often suffer from limitations, including high energy consumption, increased costs, or the introduction of new pollutants. MICP offers an innovative approach for enhancing RC performance. This technique employs the metabolic activity of specific microorganisms to induce the formation of a three-dimensionally interwoven calcium carbonate gel network within the pores and on the surface of RA. This gel network can improve the inherent defects of RA, thereby enhancing the performance of RC. Compared to conventional techniques, this approach demonstrates significant environmental benefits and enhances concrete compressive strength by 5–30%. Furthermore, embedding mineralizing microbial spores within the pores of RA enables the production of self-healing RC. This review systematically explores recent research advances in microbial mineral gel network for improving RC performance. It begins by delineating the fundamental mechanisms underlying microbial mineralization, detailing the key biochemical reactions driving the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) gel, and introducing the common types of microorganisms involved. Subsequently, it critically discusses the key environmental factors influencing the effectiveness of MICP treatment on RA and strategies for their optimization. The analysis focuses on the enhancement of critical mechanical properties of RC achieved through MICP treatment, elucidating the underlying strengthening mechanisms at the microscale. Furthermore, the review synthesizes findings on the self-healing efficiency of MICP-based RC, including such metrics as crack width healing ratio, permeability recovery, and restoration of mechanical properties. Key factors influencing self-healing effectiveness are also discussed. Finally, building upon the current research landscape, the review provides perspectives on future research directions for advancing microbial mineralization gel techniques to enhance RC performance, offering a theoretical reference for translating this technology into practical engineering applications. The olive oil sector constitutes a fundamental pillar in the Mediterranean region from socio-economic and cultural perspectives. Nonetheless, it produces significant amounts of waste, leading to numerous environmental issues. These waste streams contain valuable compounds that can be recovered and utilized as inputs for various applications. This study introduces a novel value chain for olive wastes, focused on extracting lignin from olive pomace by ionic liquids and polyphenols from olive mill wastewater, which are then incorporated as hybrid nanoparticles in the formulation of an innovative starch-based biofertilizer. This biofertilizer, obtained by using residual wastewater as a source of soluble nitrogen, acting at the same time as a plasticizer for the biopolymer, was demonstrated to surpass traditional NPK biofertilizers’ efficiency, allowing for root growth and foliage in drought conditions. In order to recognize the environmental impact due to its production and align it with the technical output, the circularity and environmental performance of the proposed system were innovatively evaluated through a combination of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Material Circularity Indicator (MCI). LCA results indicated that the initial upcycling process was potentially characterized by significant hot spots, primarily related to energy consumption (>0.70 kWh/kg of water) during the early processing stages. As a result, the LCA score of this preliminary version of the biofertilizer may be higher than that of conventional commercial products, due to reliance on thermal processes for water removal and the substantial contribution (56%) of lignin/polyphenol precursors to the total LCA score. Replacing energy-intensive thermal treatments with more efficient alternatives represents a critical area for improvement. The MCI value of 0.84 indicates limited potential for further enhancement. Tin is an indispensable metal for contemporary society owing to its extensive application. China is a major tin manufacturer and consumer worldwide. Nonetheless, the crucial characteristics of its tin metabolism remain limited. Therefore, a dynamic material flow analysis (MFA) from 2001 to 2022 was performed in this study to trace China’s tin flows and stocks. Findings show that China became a net tin exporter from a life cycle perspective, and annual tin consumption embodied in various final products varied between 49.3 kilo tons (Kt) in 2001 and 161.5 Kt in 2022, with home appliances and electronics being the dominant consumption sectors. A total of 913.3 Kt of tin became in-use stocks. In addition, the imported tin embodied in various final products varied between 13.9 Kt in 2001 and 21.6 Kt in 2022, with machinery being the dominant consumption sector. The exported tin embodied in various final products varied between 12.0 Kt in 2001 and 76.3 Kt in 2022, with machinery being the dominant consumption sector. Finally, this study proposes some suggestions, in view of the Chinese reality, like enhancing tin recycling, promoting tin geological prospecting, optimizing the structure of the tin trade, and promoting regional cooperation, to improve the supply security of tin resources. The current research trends of production engineering are based on optimizing the machining process concerning human and environmental factors. High-performance materials, such as hardened steels, nickel-based alloys, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, and titanium alloys, are classified as hard-to-cut due to their ability to maintain strength at high operating temperatures. Due to these characteristics, such materials are employed in applications such as aerospace, marine, energy generation, and structural. The purpose of this article is to investigate the machinability of these alloys under various cutting conditions. The purpose of this article is to compare cryogenic cooling and cryogenic processing from the perspective of machinability and sustainability in the manufacturing process. Compared to conventional machining, hybrid techniques, which mix cryogenic and minimal quantity lubricant, led to significantly reduced cutting forces of 40–50%, cutting temperatures and surface finishes by approximately 20–30% and more than 40%, respectively. A carbon footprint is determined by several factors including power consumption, energy requirements, and carbon dioxide emissions. As a result of the cryogenic technology, the energy consumption, power consumption, and CO2 emissions were reduced by 40%, 28%, and 35%. Full article

The Buades Gallery (1973–2003) was not merely a commercial space in Madrid. In the history of art in Spain, it served as a professional and political node for Spanish conceptualism, an art form which, due to its idiosyncrasies, required its own channels of distribution. This article seeks to examine the trajectory of Mercedes Buades in alignment with this movement, re-evaluating her role from a feminist perspective and highlighting the importance of certain agents who have traditionally been invisibilised. To this end, a theoretical approach is adopted, following the sociology of art and the social history of art, paying particular attention to the contributions of Enrico Castelnuovo, Pierre Bourdieu and Núria Peist. These frameworks enable an analysis of the role of the gallerist as a structuring agent within the artistic field, capable of generating symbolic capital and establishing dynamics of production, circulation and consumption in the context of post-Franco Spain, a country that lacked a consolidated museum infrastructure at the time. Even so, Mercedes Buades established a model of gallery practice that, beyond its commercial dimension, contributed decisively to the symbolic configuration of contemporary art in Spain and formed part of a network of artistic visibility that promoted experimental art. The consumption of insects as food is an ancient practice that remains widespread in many regions of Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania. However, this tradition has largely disappeared in Western countries, where it is often met with aversion. Nutritionally, insects can contain up to 60–70% protein (dry weight), along with beneficial fats, minerals, and vitamins, making them comparable to commonly consumed protein sources. Additionally, they contain bioactive compounds that offer health benefits and can contribute to reducing social inequalities in food access. As a sustainable protein source, insects have the potential to meet the demands of a projected global population of 9.7 billion by 2050. From a regulatory perspective, legislation on edible insects is still emerging in many parts of the world, with significant regional differences in the approval process, safety requirements, and permitted species. However, ensuring their safety—particularly in terms of production, preservation, storage, and potential health risks—is crucial. By addressing these concerns, it may be possible to shift the prevailing negative perception in Western societies and enhance consumer acceptance. Thus, we performed a literature review encompassing several issues regarding entomophagy, like insects’ nutritional composition, legislation, benefits, and food safety, and also addressing future perspectives. Conventional thermoplastic polymer composites are produced using energy-intensive equipment. From an environmental perspective, reducing energy and material consumption, as well as selecting polymers and fillers that biodegrade without harmful consequences for the environment, is considered good practice. In this work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), a biodegradable and water-soluble polymer, was compounded with 30 w%, 40 µm long cellulose fibres. Conventional melt blending production and innovative cold processing were compared from a tensile testing, thermogravimetric, and life cycle assessment (LCA) perspective through primary data collection. The granule production process significantly affects the mechanical performance of injected samples, with a 23.4% drop in tensile strength and an increase of 67.9% in elongation at break. The thermogravimetric analysis reported slight differences due to an additional thermal process involved in the melt blending of PVOH. From an LCA perspective, the innovative cold blending of PVOH-based composites drops all environmental indicators by 58–92%, maximizing the reduction of the “Water use” indicator. The most impactful production phase in the analysed production processes was drying, accounting for 46% and 85% of the conventional melt blending and innovative cold-blending processes, respectively. Steak tartare is a ready-to-eat (RTE) meat product, prepared with finely chopped or ground raw beef, with a rich culinary history and increasing consumption trend in the last years. Yet, its microbiological safety and technological challenges remain largely under-investigated. This review analyses the regulations, the safety, and technological advances in steak tartare manufacturing, focusing on microbiological risks due to potential contamination by pathogens like Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and Escherichia coli O157:H7. From this perspective, the outbreaks associated with the consumption of raw meat products have confirmed the importance of good hygiene practice and process control, currently based on the presence of nitrite in the formulation and accurate cold chain management. Recently, the EU regulations have set stricter limits for the use of nitrites and nitrates in meat products, and this evolution has increased the interest in natural alternatives. The scientific literature indicates that plant-based antimicrobials, high-pressure processing (HPP), and novel starter cultures can be promising tools to improve raw meat safety and shelf life. This review analyses the possible options for nitrite replacement, which might involve combined interventions with natural antimicrobials, starter cultures, and packaging solutions. Future studies need to address the microbial behaviour and dynamics in nitrite-free formulations, including safety validation by challenge testing with foodborne pathogens. In this respect, steak tartare could be a model for innovation in the meat industry. However, considering the challenges that must be faced, collaboration across disciplines will be essential to meet regulatory constraints and consumer expectations while ensuring product quality and safety. The escalating environmental and health concerns regarding conventional meat consumption have intensified the global search for sustainable dietary alternatives. Plant-based foods and meat substitutes have emerged as promising solutions. These products aim to replicate the sensory and nutritional attributes of meat while mitigating ecological impacts. This review examined the current scenario of plant-based foods and meat substitutes, focusing on their environmental footprints, health implications, innovative ingredient developments, consumer acceptance, and the use of analytical tools in quality control. Life cycle assessments indicate that plant-based foods and meat substitutes significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and water consumption compared to animal-based products. These alternatives offer benefits like lower saturated fat. However, they still struggle to match the amino acid composition of meat. Consumer acceptance is influenced by factors including taste, texture, and cultural perceptions, and still requires sensory improvement. Innovations in ingredient sourcing, like the use of legumes, mycoproteins, and fermentation-derived components, are enhancing product quality and diversity. Furthermore, analytical tools such as electronic noses, electronic tongues, spectroscopy, and chemometric methods ensure product consistency and fulfill consumer expectations. By synthesizing interdisciplinary insights, this review offers an integrated perspective to guide future research and development in the field of meat alternatives. Full article

This review article examines the role of additive manufacturing (AM) in increasing energy efficiency and sustainability within the evolving framework of Industry 5.0 and 6.0. This review highlights the unique ability of additive manufacturing to deliver mass-customized products while minimizing material waste and reducing energy consumption. The integration of smart technologies such as AI and IoT is explored to optimize AM processes and support decentralized, on-demand manufacturing. Thisarticle discusses different AM techniques and materials from an environmental and life-cycle perspective, identifying key benefits and constraints. This review also examines the potential of AM to support circular economy practices through local repair, remanufacturing, and material recycling. The net energy efficiency of AM depends on the type of process, part complexity, and production scale, but the energy savings per component can be significant if implemented strategically.AM significantly improves energy efficiency in certain manufacturing contexts, often reducing energy consumption by 25–50% compared to traditional subtractive methods. The results emphasize the importance of innovation in both hardware and software to overcome current energy and sustainability challenges. This review highlights AM as a key tool in achieving a human-centric, intelligent, and ecological manufacturing paradigm. Full article

Microalgae cultivation in wastewater is a production approach that combines wastewater treatment with biomass generation for various applications. This strategy aligns with the concept of a circular bioeconomy, which aims to transform waste into valuable resources. However, although this is true, this synergy’s potential bumps into obstacles that still limit the consolidation of the commercial cultivation of microalgae using wastewater. This review analyzed how close or far we are from achieving the successful integration of commercial microalgae cultivation with wastewater treatment for the production of value-added products. The analysis of the scientific literature highlighted that certain strains, such as Chlorella, Arthrospira, and Scenedesmus, can remove up to 90% of nitrogen and phosphorus from effluents while maintaining productivities of up to 45 g/m2/day. The techno-economic analyses presented here indicate that production costs range between 1.98 and 9.69 EUR/kg, depending on the effluent composition and biomass productivity. From an environmental perspective, replacing synthetic media with wastewater can significantly reduce input use, but the environmental impacts associated with energy consumption remain a challenge. This paper also discusses the technological readiness level (TRL), which currently remains between levels 4 and 6, concentrated on demonstration and pilot scales. Background/Objectives: Beef is a significant dietary component, and the concept of food quality is inherently complex and multidimensional. This study addresses this complexity within the context of beef products by examining four key attributes: price fairness, freshness, portion size, and packaging. It further investigates the structural relationships among food quality, consumer trust, and revisit intention, with particular attention to the moderating role of price fairness in the link between trust and revisit intention. Methods: Data were collected through an online survey administered via the Clickworker platform, targeting 415 U.S. consumers selected for their cultural relevance and substantial beef consumption. Structural equation modeling using maximum likelihood estimation was employed to test the hypotheses, and Hayes’ process model 15 was applied to assess the moderating effects. Results: The results show that consumer trust is positively influenced by all four quality attributes, and that freshness, portion size, packaging, and trust are positively associated with revisit and repurchase intentions. Moreover, price fairness demonstrated a significant moderating effect, framed within the heuristic decision-making perspective. Conclusions: This study contributes to the literature by shedding light on the determinants of consumer trust and repeat purchasing behavior in beef consumption. It underscores the heuristic role of price fairness and the interplay between perceived quality attributes and trust, offering practical insights for businesses seeking to enhance consumer perception and foster brand loyalty.
