Near-field communication is regarded as a key enabling technology for future 6G wireless systems. However, when operating over wide bandwidths, the beam split effect arising from frequency-independent analog phase shifters leads to significant beamforming gain degradation. Different from existing works that address this issue through true-time-delay hardware, this paper exploits the emerging movable antenna technology for beam split alleviation. Specifically, we consider a movable antenna-enabled near-field wideband uplink system with an analog beamforming architecture. Under this setup, we jointly optimize the analog phase shifts and antenna positions to maximize the minimum beamforming gain across all subcarriers. The formulated problem is highly non-convex due to the constant-modulus constraint on the analog combiner and the nonlinear dependence of the near-field channel on antenna positions, which makes conventional optimization methods difficult to apply. To this end, we develop a deep reinforcement learning framework based on the soft actor–critic algorithm that operates in a continuous action space and effectively handles the non-smooth max-min objective. Simulation results show that the proposed approach alleviates the beam split effect and achieves a higher minimum beamforming gain than conventional schemes. Full article

This paper presents an improvement to the performance of a biquad oscillator, which is a recursive oscillator known for its excellent long-term stability. However, a significant limitation is that the oscillation frequency cannot be changed while the system is operating. Directly changing the frequency during operation causes the amplitude of the generated signal to vary significantly, either increasing or decreasing. A zero-input response analysis is used to understand the cause of this problem and to develop a solution that allows the amplitude of the generated signal to remain constant even when the oscillation frequency is changed during operation. In addition, this paper presents a method for controlling the phase of the generated signal by using a 1st-order IIR phase shifter structure. The proposed structure is specifically designed to allow the phase of the signal at the oscillation frequency to be adjusted continuously and independently of the frequency parameter. This integrated oscillator enables real-time, independent control of both signal frequency and phase without amplitude drift, making it suitable for applications requiring precise and dynamic signal synthesis. The rapid expansion of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) necessitates high-capacity backhaul connectivity, yet the deployment of such networks under strict hardware and power constraints poses significant computational challenges for network optimization. To address this challenge, this paper investigates a joint transmit–receive beamforming optimization problem for narrowband wireless backhaul in IoV networks under constant-modulus constraints. Unlike ideal digital architectures, we focus on cost-effective analog phase shifters, which introduce strictly non-convex constant-modulus constraints, rendering the optimization problem mathematically intractable for standard solvers. Since the resulting problem is highly non-convex, we develop two structured numerical methods: an iterative alternating optimization (AO) method and a joint optimization (JO) method, where AO employs auxiliary WMMSE-guided alternating updates together with constant-modulus projection, while JO jointly updates both beamformers over the constant-modulus feasible set. We compare their achievable sum-rate performance with that of a CDO-based benchmark and analyze their dominant computational costs through representative Big-O complexity expressions. Furthermore, we examine the effect of SVD-based and random feasible initializations on empirical convergence behavior, runtime, and final achievable performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed computational methods significantly improve achievable sum-rate performance compared with the CDO benchmark. Moreover, SVD-based initialization provides a more structured starting point and generally leads to better convergence behavior and lower runtime than random feasible initialization. The empirical timing results further show that AO exhibits faster empirical convergence and requires lower runtime, whereas JO achieves better final sum-rate performance after more iterations. A reconfigurable analog beamformer for the use case of multiband Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) multiantenna receiver systems is designed and tested. The beamformer board operates in all existing GNSS frequency bands. In this paper, the two commonly used GNSS bands, the E1/L1 and E5a/L5 GNSS bands at 1.575 GHz and 1.176 GHz, respectively, are studied. An analog weighting of the complex excitation of up to 14 individual channels is realized using attenuators and phase shifters, digitally controlled by proprietary PC software. We present an analysis of the relative errors between the channels and a simple calibration of constant errors which is applied and validated. The beamformer is then demonstrated in an exemplary test case, to generate an ad hoc pattern from an array of antennas. Full article

This paper presents a novel compact 4 × 4 Butler matrix (BM) employing a quasi-twisted branch line coupler (QBLC) as the unit cell to achieve enhanced bandwidth performance. The proposed BM integrates four QBLCs, a uniquely designed 0 dB crossover, and a 45° phase shifter, all fabricated on a double-layer Rogers RO4003C substrate with a thickness of 0.8 mm, dielectric constant (εr) of 3.3, and a loss tangent of 0.0027. A common ground plane is used to separate the layers. Both simulation and experimental results indicate a reflection coefficient of approximately −6.5 dB at the resonant frequency of 6.5 GHz and isolation levels better than −20 dB at all ports. The system achieves output phase differences of ±13°, ±41°, ±61°, ±89°, and ±120° (±10°) at the designated frequencies. The BM occupies a compact area of 13.8 mm × 38.8 mm, achieving a 92.5% size reduction compared to conventional T-shaped BM structures. The design was modeled and simulated using CST Microwave Studio, with a strong correlation observed between simulated and measured results, validating the design’s reliability and effectiveness. Furthermore, the BM’s beamforming performance is evaluated by integrating it with a 1 × 4 microstrip antenna array. The measured return loss at all ports is below −10 dB at 6.5 GHz, and the system successfully achieves switched beam steering toward four distinct angles: −5°, +6°, +26°, −24°, +43, and −43 with antenna gains ranging from 7 to 10 dBi. This paper presents a novel switchable branch-line coupler (BLC) designed to achieve variable phase shifts while maintaining a constant output power. The proposed design incorporates low stepwise phase shifters with incremental phase shifts of 10° to 20°, covering phase ranges from −3° to 150°. The initial structure is based on a 3 dB branch-line coupler with arm electrical lengths of 3λg/2. A novel delay line structure is integrated within the BLC arms, consisting of a λg/4 section bridged by a tapered stripline to accommodate a PIN diode switch, thereby altering the current path direction. Additionally, two interdigital capacitors (IDCs), uniquely mounted on a crescent-shaped extension, are implemented alongside the tapered line to elongate the current path when the PIN diode is in the OFF state. By controlling the PIN diode states, the delay time is differentially adjusted, resulting in variable differential phase shifts at the output ports. To validate the functionality, the proposed BLC was integrated with a two-element antenna array to demonstrate differential beam steering. The measurement results confirm that the phased array antenna can switch its main beam between −27° and 25° in the elevation plane, achieving an average realized gain of approximately 7 dBi. The BLC was designed and simulated using CST Microwave Studio and was fabricated on an RO4003C Roger substrate (εr = 3.55, 0.406 mm). The proposed design is well-suited for future Butler matrix-based beamforming networks in antenna array systems, particularly for 5G wireless applications. Full article

The requirements for accurate models of renewable energy power plants are urgent for power system operation analysis. Most existing model research in this area is for wind turbine and photovoltaic (PV) power generation units; a rare renewable power plant model validation mainly adopts the single-machine infinite-bus system. The single equivalent machine method is always used, and the interactions between the power plant and the grid are ignored. The voltage at the interface bus is treated as constant, although this is not consistent with its actual characteristics. The phase shifter method of hybrid dynamic simulation has been applied in the model validation of wind farms. However, this method is heavily dependent on phasor measurement units (PMU) data, resulting in a limited application scope, and it is difficult to realize the model error location step by step. In this paper, the fast-responding generator method is used for renewable power plant model validation. The complete scheme comprising model validation, error localization, parameter sensitivity analysis, and parameter correction is proposed. Model validation is conducted based on measured records from a large-scale PV power plant in northwest China. The comparison of simulated and measured data verifies the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed scheme. Compared to the conventional model validation method, the maximum deviation of the active power simulation values obtained by the method proposed in this paper is only 38.8% of that of the conventional method, and the overall simulation curve fits the actual measured values significantly better. In this paper, we utilise optimization methods to determine a frequency-independent phase shift such that two phase-shifted versions of a signal can be summed and the resulting amplitude spectrum is unchanged. A phase difference between two signals is thus defined, which remains constant for all frequencies within a given range. For the intended purpose of this study, we set the frequency range to the audible human hearing range of 16 Hz–20 kHz. We found that a new 3-stage filter method provides a variable phase shifter (i.e., ϕ = 0–360°) without the need for additional amplifiers. In addition, we present a new method that reduces the number of filters necessary, improving both the accuracy and efficiency of current techniques. Full article

This paper introduces compact Printed Ridge Gap Waveguide (PRGW) phase shifters tailored for millimeter-wave applications, with a focus on achieving wide operating bandwidth, and improved matching and phase balance compared to single-layer technology. This study proposes a unique approach to achieve the required phase shift in PRGW technology, which has not been previously explored. This study also introduces a novel analytical approach to calculate the cutoff frequency and propagation constant of the PRGW structure, a method not previously addressed. Furthermore, the utilization of multi-layer PRGW technology enables the realization of multi-layer beamforming networks without crossing, thereby supporting wideband operation in a compact size. The proposed design procedure enables the realization of various phase shift values ranging from 0 to 135 over a broad frequency bandwidth centered at 30 GHz. A 45-degree phase shifter is fabricated and tested, demonstrating a 10 GHz bandwidth (approximately 33% fractional bandwidth) from 25 GHz to 35 GHz. Throughout the operating bandwidth, the phase balance remains within 45 ± 5, with a deep matching level of −20 dB. The proposed phase shifter exhibits desirable characteristics, such as compactness, low loss, and low dispersion, making it a suitable choice for millimeter-wave applications, including beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G wireless communications. This work serves as the first simulation investigation to tackle the liquid crystal (LC)-filled coaxially structured continuously variable phase shifter at 60 GHz, wherein the LCs act as single tunable dielectrics fully occupying the millimeter-wave (mmW) power transmitted (i.e., free of leakage or interference). Impedance and effective dielectric constant computations are settled, followed by the quantification of the interplay between the dielectric thickness and the dielectric constant (Dk) for a controlled 50 Ω impedance. Geometry’s aspect ratio (AR) effects are exploited for the coaxially accommodating topology filled with mmW-tailored LCs with an operatable Dk range of 2.754 (isotropic state) to 3.3 (saturated bias state). In addition to the proposed structure’s noise-free advantages, a novel figure of merit (FoM) enhancement method based on Dk-selection-based impedance matching is proposed. The optimum FoM design by simulation exhibits a 0–180.19° continuously variable phase shift with a maximum insertion loss of 1.75871 dB, i.e., a simulated FoM of 102.46°/dB when the LC-filled coaxial geometry is 50 Ω and matched with the Dk of 2.8, corresponding to the dielectric thickness of 0.34876 mm and line length of 15.92 mm. The envisioned device fabrication and assembly processes are free of the conventional polyimide alignment agent and the related thermal and electrical concerns. Significant cost reduction and yield improvement can hence be envisaged. The topology can also serve as a test structure for broadband characterizations of LC materials and new electro-optical effects. Full article

In this paper, two sector beam scanning approaches (BSAs) based on element position perturbations (EPPs) in the azimuth plane are introduced. In EPP-BSA, the elements’ excitations are kept constant and the elements’ positions in the direction normal to the array line are changed according to a predetermined EPP pattern. The magnitude and repetition rate of the selected EPP pattern determines the steering angle of the main beam. However, EPP-BSA results in a wide scanning range with a significant increase in the side lobe level (SLL). To mitigate this drawback, a reduction in the SLL of the array pattern is firstly performed using the single convolution/genetic algorithm (SC/GA) technique and then perturbing the elements’ positions in the azimuth plane. This combination between SLL reduction and EPP-BSA (SLL/EPP-BSA) results in a smaller scanning range with a relatively constant half power beamwidth (HPBW) and a much lower SLL. In addition, keeping the synthesized excitation coefficients constant without adding progressive phase shifters facilitates the manufacturing process and reduces the cost of the feeding network. Furthermore, a planar antenna array thinning approach is proposed to realize the EPP-BSA. The results are realized using the computer simulation technology (CST) microwave studio software package, which provides users with an optimized modeling environment and results in realizable and realistic designs. This paper presents the design of a new phase shifter to be used in a receiver of active antenna array operating in the range from 17 GHz to 22 GHz. Beamforming is achieved by controlling the phase of the signal in each radiant element. In this context, the phase shift is obtained by the combination of a quadrature signal generator (QSG) and a variable gain amplifier (VGA). This work is focused on the design of a VGA which has a set of dummy transistors to keep the input and output impedance constant. The phase shifter is digitally programmable using a 5-bit word. The system was laid out using a 65 nm CMOS process, and the physical post-layout results show that the phase shifter achieves root mean square errors of 4.5° for the phase and 0.79 dB for the gain at a frequency of 19.5 GHz. A comparative analysis with other recently published phase shifters shows that the proposed phase shifter presents a good compromise between power consumption and accuracy. Full article

This article was written to present a new solution for a phase-shifting transformer and to show that, in many aspects, the proposed device is more functional and improved when compared to the other currently available phase-shifting structures. The article shows the construction of the new phase-shifting transformer, with longitudinal and transverse voltage regulation. The proposed device’s functionality and available operation states are compared to other existing solutions. Selected steady-state variants of the operation of the proposed transformer were checked based on computer simulations and the laboratory model presented in detail in the article. Convergence between measurements and simulations was achieved. Power flow calculations were also performed in the five-node electrical power system model. In these calculations, two variants of the proposed device’s work were considered and compared with the asymmetric phase shifter. The tests confirmed in the proposed structure, both angle and voltage regulation, enabled maintaining a constant active power flow. The authors show that the proposed solution combines the advantages and functionality of various types of phase shifters while, at the same time, being characterized by a much simpler structure, which results in a two-times-lower cost of the device. In this work, a novel electrically reconfigurable phase shifter based on a half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HM-SIW) is proposed. SIW is a guided transmission line topology, and by using half-mode excitation, a smaller size can be achieved. Phase shifters are electronic devices that change the phase of transmission for a wide range of applications, including inverse scattering and sensing. The tunability of PIN diodes is applied here to achieve a reconfigurable design. The proposed single-layer structure does not require extra wiring layers for the bias circuit on the suggested printed circuit board. Its principle consists in the integration, in the HM-SIW, of three parallel lines, each connecting the edge of the HM-SIW and linked to a PIN diode and a radial stub. Here we present the results of measurements for a frequency band from 4.5 to 7 GHz that demonstrate how the experiment agrees with simulations. Insertion loss was less than −10 dB, and port coupling was less than −2 dB for both simulation and measurement solutions. The proposed half-mode structure is around half the size of a typical SIW line. With the proposed design, the seven states of the PIN diodes can be validated (ON and OFF), with a wide band adaptation and a relatively constant phase difference across a broad frequency range (44%). A key benefit of the proposed design for a microwave component is the reduction of extra biasing layers for the PIN diodes. This is in addition to the reduced size of the transmission line compared to a commercial SIW. In the annexed section, simulation software is used for a more comprehensive analysis involving more phase shift values and parametric studies. Full article

This paper proposes two data-independent phase-only beamforming algorithms for frequency diverse array multiple-input multiple-output radar against swarm interference. The proposed strategy can form a deep null at the interference area to achieve swarm interference suppression by tuning the phase of the weight vector, which can effectively reduce the hardware cost of the receiver. Specifically, the first algorithm imposes constant modulus constraint and sidelobe level constraint, and the phase-only weight vector is solved. The second algorithm performs a constant modulus decomposition of the weight vector to obtain two phase-only weight vectors, and uses two parallel phase shifters to synthesize one beamforming weight. Both methods can obtain the phase-only weight to realize suppression for swarm interference. Simulation results demonstrate that our strategy shows superiority in beam shape, output signal-to-interference-noise ratio, and phase shifter quantization performance, and has the potential for use in many applications, such as radar countermeasures and electronic defense.
