Recursive Interplay of Family and Biological Dynamics: Adults with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Under the Spotlight

Objectives: Diabetes Mellitus involves demanding challenges that interfere with family functioning and routines. In turn, family and social context impacts individual glycemic control. This study aims to identify this recursive interplay, the mutual influences of family systems and diabetes management. Design: Data was collected through a cross-sectional design comparing patients, aged 22–55, with and without metabolic control. Methods: Participants filled out a set of self-report measures of sociodemographic, clinical and family systems assessment. Patients (91) were also invited to describe their perception about disease management interference regarding family functioning. We first examined the extent to which family variables grouped dataset to determine if there were similarities and dissimilarities that fit with our initial diabetic groups’ classification. Results: Cluster analysis results identify a two-cluster solution validating initial classification of two groups of patients: 49 with metabolic control (MC) and 42 without metabolic control (NoMC). Independent sample tests suggested statistically significant differences between groups in family subscales- family difficulties and family communication (p < 0.05). Binary logistic regression shed light on predictors of explained variance to no metabolic control, in four models: Sociodemographic, Clinical data, SCORE-15/Congruence Scale and Eating Behavior. Furthermore, groups differ on family support, level and sources of family conflict caused by diabetes management issues. Considering only patients who co-habit with a partner for more than one year (N = 44), NoMC patients score lower on marital functioning in all categories (p < 0.05). Discussion: Family-Chronic illness interaction plays a significant role in a patient’s adherence to treatment. This study highlights the Standards of Medical Care for Diabetes, considering caregivers and family members on diabetes care. Full article

Vermicomposting is a sustainable biotechnological process that transforms organic waste through the synergistic activity of earthworms, such as Eisenia fetida, and their associated microbiota. This study evaluated bacterial and physicochemical dynamics during the vermicomposting of bovine manure by analyzing the microbial composition of the substrate and the gut of E. fetida at three time points (weeks 0, 6, and 12). The V3–V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced, and microbial diversity was characterized using QIIME2. Significant differences in alpha diversity (observed features, Shannon index, and phylogenetic diversity) and beta diversity indicated active microbial succession. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Actinobacteriota were the dominant phyla, with abundances varying across habitats and over time. A significant enrichment of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and the genera Chryseolinea, Flavobacterium, and Sphingomonas was observed in the manure treatments. In contrast, Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, and the genera Methylobacter, Brevibacillus, Enhygromyxa, and Bacillus, among others, were distinctive of the gut samples and contributed to their dissimilarity from the manure treatments. Simultaneously, the physicochemical parameters indicated progressive substrate stabilization and nutrient enrichment. Notably, the organic matter and total organic carbon contents decreased (from 79.47% to 47.80% and from 46.10% to 27.73%, respectively), whereas the total nitrogen content increased (from 1.70% to 2.23%); these effects reduced the C/N ratio, which is a recognized indicator of maturity, from 27.13 to 12.40. The macronutrient contents also increased, with final values of 1.41% for phosphorus, 1.50% for potassium, 0.89% for magnesium, and 2.81% for calcium. These results demonstrate that vermicomposting modifies microbial communities and enhances substrate quality, supporting its use as a biofertilizer for sustainable agriculture, soil restoration, and agrochemical reduction. Residential segregation remains a persistent challenge in European urban environments and is an increasing focal point in urban policy debates. This study investigates the changing geographies of ethnic diversity and residential segregation in Riga, the capital city of Latvia. The research addresses the complex dynamics of ethnic residential patterns within the distinctive context of post-socialist urban transformation, examining how historical legacies of ethnic diversity interact with contemporary migration flows to reshape neighborhood ethnic composition. Using geo-referenced data from 2000, 2011, and 2021 census rounds, we examined changes in the spatial distribution of five major ethnic groups. Our analysis employs the Dissimilarity Index to measure ethnic residential segregation and the Location Quotient to identify the residential concentration of ethnic groups across the city. The findings reveal that Riga’s ethnic landscape is undergoing a gradual yet impactful transformation. The spatial distribution of ethnic groups is shifting, with the increasing segregation of certain groups, particularly traditional ethnic minorities, coupled with a growing concentration of Europeans and non-Europeans in the inner city. The findings reveal distinctive patterns of ethnic diversification and demographic change, wherein long-term trends intersect with contemporary migration dynamics to produce unique trajectories of ethnic residential segregation, which differ from those observed in Western European contexts. However, the specific dynamics in Riga, particularly the persistence of traditional ethnic minority communities and the emergence of new ethnic groups, highlight the unique context of post-socialist urban landscapes. Communication about moral decision-making involves complex emotional and cognitive processes, especially in critical situations. This study adopted a hyperscanning paradigm to explore neural convergence during moral negotiation. Twenty-six healthy young adults (mean age = 23.59 years; 16 women, 10 men), with no neurological or psychiatric conditions, were paired into 13 same-gender dyads at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. Each dyad discussed a medical moral dilemma while their electrophysiological (EEG) activity was simultaneously recorded. Participants were first categorized according to their Dominant Reasoning Profile (DRP) (cognitive or affective), and subsequently convergence in DRP within the dyads was established. EEG band dissimilarities within each dyad were analyzed across frontal, temporo-central, and parieto-occipital regions. The results revealed significantly greater dissimilarity in frontal delta-band activity compared to parieto-occipital areas, regardless of the dyad’s DRP. Such results might suggest different emotional and motivational reactions between the two individuals, reflecting a broader gap in how the moral decision-making process was interpreted and internalized by each member, despite their DRP. The EEG hyperscanning paradigm proves useful in the study and understanding of the neural mechanisms involved in social interaction about morally sensitive decisions and provides novel insights into dyadic brain dynamics. Amid declining fish diversity and human pressures in freshwater ecosystems, robust basin-scale assessments are vital for effective fisheries management. This study collated nearly four decades of fishery yields from the Pearl and Yangtze Rivers to identify conservation priorities in the Pearl River Basin. It introduced a novel cumulative effect indicator based on zeta diversity—a biodiversity pattern metric—integrated with cumulative effects analysis for management decision-making. The research employed a multi-site generalized dissimilarity model to examine the non-linear relationships between fish species composition (ζn) and human pressures, environmental factors, and geospatial variations across elevation gradients. The cumulative effect indicator, reflecting responses to anthropogenic stress when assessing ζ2 (related to β diversity), helped evaluate basins for conservation or restoration needs based on their unique or homogenized biotic communities. The results suggest that ζ diversity in low-elevation sub-basins has a stronger filtering effect on ζ by human pressures than in mid- to high-elevation sub-basins, where community aggregation is more random. The impact varied with diversity aspects (nestedness vs. turnover) and zeta order. A negative correlation between cumulative effects and community uniqueness validated the novel cumulative effect indicator’s effectiveness for guiding restoration in the Pearl River Delta, potential fishing bans, and karst conservation. This approach offers a theoretical basis for prioritizing areas for freshwater fish diversity conservation and fishing restrictions in the Pearl River Basin. Full article

(1) Background: This study aimed to investigate the bacterial microbiomes in the ingredients and final PBM products during a storage period of 28 days at 2–4 °C for food safety and quality. (2) Methods: DNA from raw ingredients (i.e., defatted soy flour, potato starch, wheat gluten, mung bean protein, and duckweed) and three PBM formulations were extracted and sequenced using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. (3) Results: Alpha diversity (Simpson and Shannon) was high in the raw ingredients (p ≤ 0.05). Beta diversity showed dissimilarities between the samples. Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the core microflora in these ingredients. The heat-stable microbes in PBM (e.g., Nostocaceae in SF and Cyanobacteriale in MB and DW) survived after extrusion. After the ingredients were stored at room temperature, the bacterial communities shifted, with Paucibacter being the majority population in raw ingredients and PBM in the 2nd batch. The predictions of Potential_Pathogens related to the abundance of Aeromonadaceae and Enterobacteriaceae need to be monitored during storage. (4) Conclusions: Our results showed that the bacterial community in PBM containing 30% MB and 3% DW did not drastically change during 28 days of storage at cold temperatures. Uncovering bacterial microbiomes in the ingredients should be emphasized for quality and safety, as ingredients influence the microbiome in the final products. Full article

Hibernation in mammals entails profound physiological changes that are known to impact host-associated microbial communities, yet its effects on the gut microbiota of synanthropic bats remain underexplored. In this study, we investigated the gut bacterial composition and diversity of Nyctalus noctula before and during hibernation using high-throughput 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Fecal samples from individually banded bats were collected under controlled conditions at a rehabilitation center and analyzed for alpha and beta diversity, as well as differential taxonomic abundance. Hibernation was associated with a marked reduction in microbial diversity according to the Shannon and Simpson indices and a distinct restructuring of gut communities based on the Bray–Curtis dissimilarity index. Active bats exhibited a diverse microbiota enriched in facultative anaerobes, including Lactococcus, Enterococcus, and EscherichiaShigella, while hibernating individuals were dominated by obligate anaerobes, such as Romboutsia and Paeniclostridium. These findings suggest a contraction and functional specialization of the gut microbiota during torpor, potentially reflecting adaptations to fasting, hypothermia, and reduced gut motility. Our results demonstrate that the bat’s gut microbiome is highly responsive to physiological status and underscore the importance of microbial ecology for understanding the host’s energy balance and health under seasonal contexts. The elevational patterns of plant β diversity and their underlying drivers are known to be scale-dependent, but pinpointing the spatial scales at which different ecological processes occur remains challenging using traditional field inventory methods. Remote sensing has emerged as a promising alternative, providing continuous spatial data for monitoring plant diversity. In this study, we used field inventory data and corresponding Sentinel-2 images from a subtropical mountain to simulate pooled assemblages and assess the potential of using multispectral satellite images in predicting tree β diversity. We further examined the scale-dependent elevational gradient of the spectral β diversity and identified primary topographic variables across different spatial extents (0.16–64 ha). The spectral β diversity showed a consistently positive relationship with the inventory β diversity calculated using various indices (average pairwise Sørensen, Jaccard, and Bray–Curtis dissimilarities, as well as multi-community differentiation measures based on Hill numbers), with the strongest correlation observed for abundance-weighted indices and images from early spring and late autumn (R2max = 0.63). However, a null model-derived β deviation showed only a weak correlation between remote sensing and field-based measures. A declining trend in the spectral β diversity with an increasing elevation was observed and became more pronounced at larger extents. The topographic heterogeneity, represented by the slope and northness, explained the elevational gradients at spatial extents >4 ha, attesting the significant role of environmental filtering in shaping plant diversity patterns, even at fine scales. While the northness was more influential at smaller spatial extents (<4 ha), the slope had a stronger impact at broader spatial extents (>4 ha). This study showcases the potential of using readily available remote sensing data to address difficult questions in plant diversity research. Full article

Routine aquaculture practices such as capture, transportation, and handling can disrupt the relationship between commensal and opportunistic bacteria in the fish skin microbiome. Anesthetic baths are a common welfare practice in aquaculture to reduce stress during handling. However, to date, no studies assessed the effect of anesthetics on bacterial communities in fish skin mucus. This study is the first to evaluate the influence of benzocaine, a widely used anesthetic, on the skin mucus bacterial microbiome of Atlantic salmon reared in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). Using Illumina high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we found that bacterial richness and diversity were significantly reduced in skin mucus samples from fish with anesthesia (ANE) when compared with those without anesthesia (CTR). The predominant bacterial classes in both groups were Gammaproteobacteria (54.1–62.6%) and Betaproteobacteria (22.6–22.9%). However, significant dissimilarities in beta diversity were observed between the bacterial community structure of salmon skin mucus samples from ANE and CTR. These findings demonstrate that benzocaine exposure alters skin mucus microbiome of Atlantic salmon potentially leading to dysbiosis. This study also provides baseline information on the bacterial communities of Atlantic salmon skin mucus microbiome in an RAS. As no temporal resampling was performed, the duration and persistence of these changes remain unknown and warrant further investigation. Full article

Smoking is a major risk factor for bladder cancer and postoperative complications. Therefore, urological guidelines strongly recommend smoking cessation. Notwithstanding, many patients continue to smoke beyond the time of diagnosis. By using the qualitative methodology, this study aimed to explore barriers, facilitators, and recommendations related to the intensive smoking cessation Gold Standard Programme (GSP) from the multi-perspective view of patients treated with transurethral resection of the bladder tumour (TURBT), their relatives, and clinicians. We conducted semi-structured individual interviews with eight patients, four relatives, and six clinicians in the urology setting. Data were analysed using the Framework Method. All participants perceived the GSP positively. Across the three groups, five categories emerged describing barriers and facilitators: perceptions of the GSP, pragmatic factors, health-related factors, psychological factors, and relational and communicative factors. Similarly, recommendations were represented in two categories: the GSP and pragmatic factors. While facilitators were relatively similar across the three groups, barriers were dissimilar or contradictory. The clinicians expressed the most challenges related to relational and communicative factors. The patients mainly had recommendations related to the GSP, while the clinicians’ recommendations focused on pragmatic factors for conducting the GSP. The potential involvement of relatives needs to be further investigated. Full article

The Fauzderhat coast of Chattogram (Bangladesh) is increasingly affected anthropogenic pressures, necessitating an understanding of its ecological conditions to inform effective ecosystem management. Despite this urgency, the local succession patterns and environmental impacts on macrobenthic communities remain poorly understood. This study examines the saltmarsh bed macrobenthos in Fauzderhat, documenting 81,724 individuals from 54 species. These include ten families and twenty-two species of annelids, ten and twelve species of arthropods, and ten and eleven species of mollusks, as well as six and nine species from different phyla. Seasonality showed significantly different patterns of changes, with the number of species and abundance peaking during the monsoon (53 species) and post-monsoon (21,969) conditions, respectively, and being lowest in the post-monsoon condition (39 species) and winter (18,265 individuals). Species richness, diversity, and evenness were significantly higher in monsoon and lower in post-monsoon conditions, with the differences being only significant in the former. Cluster analysis and line graphs indicated that average species abundance was lowest post-monsoon, increased through the winter and pre-monsoon conditions, then declined again during monsoon conditions. SIMPER analysis revealed the highest dissimilarity between pre-monsoon and post-monsoon conditions while winter and post-monsoon conditions showed the lowest dissimilarity of microbenthic assemblages. Correlation coefficients showed the macrobenthos were positively correlated with soil salinity, dissolved oxygen, and pH, while they were negatively correlated with sand, Inundation Period, and nutrients. CCA showed that monsoon conditions (higher water temperature, inundation period, and tidal height) created unfavorable environments for most species, except for several species. Conversely, winter favored species like M. oligobranchia. Post-monsoon nutrient levels increased stress, reducing species presence, while pre-monsoon conditions supported balanced diversity. The Functional Signature of Decision Making Across Dyads During a Persuasive Scenario: Hemodynamic fNIRS Coherence Measure

Introduction: Within a shared decision-making process, persuasion dynamics develop as a communication sub-process that can be characterized by different phases. This study examines hemodynamic functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) coherence measures in dyads of decision-makers. The interaction occurs in two phases: Phase 1, where the persuader (Pr) introduces the decision topic and uses persuasive strategies, and Phase 2, where the Persuaded (Pd) responds and may agree with the Pr’s selected option. Method: Fourteen dyads participated, with fNIRS measuring oxygenated (O2Hb) and deoxygenated (HHb) hemoglobin concentration changes in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during both phases. Hemodynamic coherence within dyads was explored through the computation of a dissimilarity index (Euclidean distance). Results: Phase 2 showed increased HHb dissimilarity, indicating greater divergence in brain activity during the Pd’s response phase. Discussion: These findings suggest that, during persuasion, when Pd responds, there is increased dissimilarity in cognitive and neural processes, without implying a loss of synergy. The study highlights the importance of interactional dynamics in shaping decision outcomes and underscores the potential of fNIRS as a non-invasive tool for monitoring brain activity in clinical and collaborative settings. Ethnic segregation, a global phenomenon shaping social dynamics, urban development, and political behavior, is typically studied between distinct racial or national groups. This study provides insights into internal divisions within seemingly unified populations by investigating intra-group segregation within Israel’s ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Jewish communities. By analyzing Knesset voting patterns as a proxy for residential distribution, I quantify segregation between two major ethnic groups within the Haredi community and identify significant segregation across Haredi-majority cities and clusters. Dissimilarity indices reveal distinct voluntary segregation patterns, with the city of Ashdod emerging as a unique case study due to its dynamic segregation trends and an unexplained sharp decline in dissimilarity in 2021. A comparison with Black–White segregation in U.S. metro areas highlights differing drivers of segregation: cultural and religious dynamics in Haredi communities versus structural inequalities in the U.S. Despite relatively lower dissimilarity scores, cultural and institutional factors reinforce residential separation. This research underscores the need for continued exploration of segregation’s underlying drivers and its implications for fostering more cohesive societies. Full article

Maternal Socioeconomic Status and the Initiation and Duration of Breastfeeding in Western Europe Versus Southern Africa: A Systematic Review—A Contribution from the ConcePTION Project

Breastfeeding is associated with many health benefits, while its prevalence is determined by numerous factors, including socioeconomic status (SES). SES is the position of an individual on the socioeconomic scale, using occupation, education, income, place of residence, and wealth as key indicators. Since its interrelationship with health is complex, world region-specific insights into the relevant socioeconomic inequalities impacting breastfeeding practices are crucial to effectively address these. The purpose of this systematic review is, therefore, to explore SES indicators affecting breastfeeding initiation and duration in two different United Nations-defined regions, Western Europe and Southern Africa to assess (dis)similarities, as these can guide region-specific, targeted interventions to improve practices. A systematic literature search was conducted across seven databases, of which 47 articles were included. The risk of bias was assessed, and outcome data related to SES as well as breastfeeding initiation and duration were collected. Higher education consistently leads to better breastfeeding initiation outcomes, but economic constraints and employment in informal sectors hinder breastfeeding practices in Southern Africa. In Western Europe, supportive working conditions and a migration background have a positive impact, while employment status and income show rather mixed effects. Community, regional, and religious factors play significant, ambiguous roles. In South Africa, food insecurity, the living environment, and geographic location complicate breastfeeding. This systematic review highlights the significant influence of SES on breastfeeding initiation and duration in Western Europe and Southern Africa, while the specific factors indeed vary between both regions. This systematic review therefore illustrates the relevance of region-specific SES factors, impacting breastfeeding practices. Addressing these barriers with region-specific, targeted approaches may result in substantial progress toward achieving global breastfeeding goals. Registration: PROSPERO (CRD42023473433). In this work, we present an up-scaling framework in a multi-scale setting to calibrate a stochastic material model. In particular with regard to application of the proposed method, we employ Bayesian updating to identify the probability distribution of continuum-based coarse-scale model parameters from fine-scale measurements, which is discrete and also inherently random (aleatory uncertainty) in nature. Owing to the completely dissimilar nature of models for the involved scales, the energy is used as the essential medium (i.e., the predictions of the coarse-scale model and measurements from the fine-scale model) of communication between them. This task is realized computationally using a generalized version of the Kalman filter, employing a functional approximation of the involved parameters. The approximations are obtained in a non-intrusive manner and are discussed in detail especially for the fine-scale measurements. The demonstrated numerical examples show the utility and generality of the presented approach in terms of obtaining calibrated coarse-scale models as reasonably accurate approximations of fine-scale ones and greater freedom to select widely different models on both scales, respectively.
