Immersive virtual reality is increasingly used for safety training, yet many initiatives remain technology-led pilots that enhance scenario realism and engagement without explaining how training becomes embedded in everyday work (e.g., alignment with SOPs, assessment routines, scheduling, and accountable debrief practices) or how skills reliably transfer back to duty. This paper addresses that gap by introducing Work-Integrated Safety Training (WIST) as a socio-technical training approach that couples IVR-based immersion with work-integrated routines to develop competence in safety-critical, passenger-facing work. Using Action Design Research (ADR) with Sweden’s national rail operator (SJ), we iteratively designed and evaluated a gamified immersive prototype for onboard conflict management, drawing on interviews, incident reports, co-design workshops, and in situ evaluations. We formalize four transferable design principles—specified with mechanisms and boundary conditions that guide how immersive training can (i) scaffold composure before intervention, (ii) make dynamic risk legible through interpretable cues, (iii) support SOP-aligned adaptive communication with replay-based reflection, and (iv) strengthen team coordination through role-specific checkpoints and psychologically safe debriefs. The paper contributes design knowledge for moving from isolated IVR demonstrations to work-integrated training systems that are implementable in organizations and testable in further longitudinal evaluation. Thailand is globally recognized for its tourism potential and rich diversity of cultural and natural heritage. Community-based tourism (CBT), in particular, holds significant promise for inclusive and sustainable development. However, CBT initiatives across the country remain fragile in the face of uncertainty, whether from pandemics, climate events, or market shifts, and are often constrained by fragmented practices and the absence of a shared service development framework that addresses sustainability tensions. This study addresses that gap by developing and validating a sustainability-oriented new service development (NSD) process comprising five phases and sixteen steps, tailored specifically for CBT under uncertainty. Through expert interviews and iterative action research in two contrasting Thai communities, the process was refined to include tools for place identity, customer analysis, service testing, and adaptive planning. The framework enables CBT communities to move from ad hoc efforts to structured, resilient, and market-aligned service practices. Expert validation confirmed its effectiveness and adaptability, while also recommending digital transformation and financial integration as future directions. This process offers a pathway for improving CBT outcomes in Thailand, and a potentially adaptable framework for CBT development across diverse contexts in uncertain tourism environments. Full article

This article reports on a comparative case study that examined the ground rules used to facilitate a dialogic space in two discrete and diverse research studies: Year 5 & 6 children learning to code with ScratchMaths as part of their mathematics programmes, and crop farmers in rural east Africa developing their practice through various communications. The intention was to see if there were common actions or principles important for the establishment of ground rules in dialogic spaces in general. Understanding the nature of dialogic space has become increasingly important in many areas of education. STEM subjects, particularly when integrated, frequently involve collaborative interaction, and utilise a dialogical approach. Some initial aspects of ground rules were collaboratively identified, with both studies then independently analysed to identify emerging themes related to these ground rules. Several key elements emerged: developing the processes for interaction and communication; developing trust between participants; developing respectful dialogue; teacher roles; and facilitating collaborative work and the co-construction of meaning. The comparative case study suggested that these were important for other education work when establishing dialogic space. Full article

Background: Bile acids participate in several metabolic processes, and disturbances in their circulating profiles are commonly observed in type 2 diabetes. In a cohort of older adults, individuals with diabetes exhibited markedly lower concentrations of metabolites derived from lithocholic acid. These findings prompted further evaluation of the metabolic effects of lithocholic acid. Methods: We assessed the actions of lithocholic acid in a mouse model of diabetes induced by a high-fat diet and streptozotocin. Fasting glucose, insulin levels, lipid parameters, and measures of insulin resistance were evaluated. Gut microbial composition, short-chain fatty acids, fecal enzyme activities, intestinal barrier markers, and bile acid patterns were analyzed. In vitro assays examined the direct effects of lithocholic acid on A. muciniphila and bile acid metabolism. Results: Lithocholic acid supplementation lowered fasting glucose and insulin levels and improved insulin resistance. It shifted the gut microbial community toward a healthier structure, increased the abundance of A. muciniphila, and raised short-chain fatty acid concentrations. Fecal bile salt hydrolase and β-glucuronidase activity declined, and intestinal barrier markers improved. Lithocholic acid enhanced TGR5 expression and reduced FXR signaling in the ileum. In vitro, physiologically relevant concentrations promoted A. muciniphila growth and altered microbial bile acid metabolism. Conclusions: Lithocholic acid influences the interactions among gut microbes, bile acid pathways, and host metabolic regulation. These findings suggest that this compound may have value as a dietary component that supports metabolic health in type 2 diabetes. Full article

Objectives: This study aims to explore the facilitators and barriers in the process of using AI agents for disease management in older COPD patients. Methods: Based on the normalization process theory, a descriptive qualitative study was used to conduct semi-structured interviews with 28 older patients with COPD recruited from June to August 2025 in a Class A tertiary hospital in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Results: A total of 28 interviews were conducted. Four themes (Coherence, Cognitive Participation, Collective Action, Reflexive Monitoring), nine subthemes (recognition of intelligent technology;supported by policy discourse and the background of national-level projects; the creation of a family atmosphere; recommendations from HCPs; relief and social connection; new “doctor”–patient relationship and communication; eliminate the burden and return to life; benefit and value perception; right self-decision by AI) in facilitators and nine subthemes (privacy conflicts and trust deficiency; blurred boundaries of human–machine responsibility and authority; non-high-quality services are chosen reluctantly; technical anxiety; lack of motivation for continued engagement; extra burden; limitations of the physical environment; human–machine dialogue frustration; a sense of uncertainty about the future of AI) in barriers were extracted. Conclusions: This study identified key factors influencing the use of AI agents in chronic disease management in older patients with COPD. Revitalising Living Heritage Through Collaborative Design: An Adaptive Reuse Framework for Transforming Cave Dwellings into Urban-Rural Symbiosis Hubs

Against the backdrop of accelerating urbanisation in China, the urban-rural divide continues to widen, while cave dwellings along the Yellow River have been largely abandoned, facing the challenge of cultural erosion. This study breaks from conventional conservation approaches by empirically exploring the viability of living heritage in promoting sustainable rural revitalisation and integrated urban-rural development. Employing participatory action research, it engaged multiple stakeholders—including villagers, returning migrants, and urban designers—across 60 villages in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. This collaboration catalysed a “collective-centred” adaptive reuse model, generating multifaceted solutions. The case of Fangshan County’s transformation into a cultural ecosystem demonstrates how this model simultaneously fosters endogenous social cohesion, attracts tourism resources and investment, while disseminating traditional culture. Quantitative analysis using the Yao Dong Living Heritage Sensitivity Index (Y-LHSI) and Living Heritage Transmission Index (Y-LHI) indicates that the efficacy of collective action is a decisive factor, revealing an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic development and cultural preservation. The findings further propose that living heritage regeneration should be reconceptualised from a purely technical restoration task into a viable social design pathway fostering mutually beneficial urban-rural symbiosis. It presents a replicable “Yao Dong Solution” integrating cultural sustainability, community resilience, and inclusive economic development, offering insights for achieving sustainable development goals in similar contexts across China and globally. It is imperative to continuously monitor public awareness, attitudes, and environmental actions to adjust policy to promote and support transition processes given the ongoing phenomenon of climate change. Insights into poorly investigated domains, such as rural areas, are particularly valuable in this context. Responding to this challenge, we aimed to diagnose the efforts in which individuals engage for the benefit of their local communities in rural areas of a selected region of Poland (Małopolskie Voivodeship) in the context of climate change and the energy transition. The study concerns a specific region, one with the most intensive deployment of climate and energy policy in Poland. It is also highly diversified in terms of the environment and population, from the densely urbanised Kraków Metropolitan Area to scattered rural areas where institutional resources are scarce. This diversity affects how local populations engage in climate and energy efforts. The study involves a literature review and an original 2024 survey among 300 people from five rural districts of Małopolskie Voivodeship selected to reflect the region’s diversity. The CAPI (Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing) survey sample was built with chain referral. The in-depth analyses were performed in IBM SPSS, v.25. We employed statistical analyses, including one-way ANOVA to assess between-group variance, χ2 tests, Sidak tests, and Fisher’s tests. The results show that most respondents recognised an association between energy and climate, but the awareness is fragmented and varied. These conclusions call for amplifying environmental awareness, particularly regarding energy transition. We have also confirmed a significant spatial diversification of environmental attitudes and practices among the public regarding the energy transition. It has been confirmed by all indicators, from the state of the environment to the perceived agency to the structure of home heating systems. Additionally, the importance of local governments in pro-climate activities was indicated. This is particularly important in the context of the ‘Anti-smog resolution for Małopolska’, which has been in force in the Małopolska Province since 2019 and plays a leading role in climate policy in the region. What is particularly important is that the vast majority of respondents from all districts declared their support for these changes, for which local governments are responsible. Full article

This article explores urban ‘societal resilience’ during the global pandemic of 2020–2021. This health crisis involved a complex interweaving of social, cultural, political, and economic processes which involved both top-down measures undertaken by nation-state governments and bottom-up actions by local residents. In a research study undertaken in two European cities—Stuttgart and London—we focussed on two migrant minorities and the involvement by ‘experts’ and ‘non-experts’ in the meso-level where these top-down measures and bottom-up actions met. Our study provided a grounded understanding of ‘layered resilience’ where resiliency develops through the disjunctive order of communication patterns, public service delivery, institutionalized dialogue, narratives, and values. Through distinguishing between resiliency and resilience, we seek to illustrate the ‘elastic’ character of urban modes of integration. Our study suggests the need for more empirically grounded investigations into the continuity and difference between adaptation and adjustment, normality and normalcy, and resilience and resiliency. It also highlights the importance of context-specific and path-dependent notions of resilience and resiliency. Full article

Extreme wildfires are becoming increasingly frequent and severe across many regions worldwide, driven by climate change, land-use transitions, and long-standing fire-suppression legacies. In this context, Nature-based Solutions (NbSs)—defined as actions that work with ecological processes to address societal challenges while providing biodiversity and socio-economic benefits—offer a promising yet underdeveloped pathway for enhancing wildfire resilience. This Special Issue brings together eleven contributions spanning empirical ecology, landscape configuration, simulation modelling, spatial optimisation, ecosystem service analysis, governance assessment, and community-based innovation. Collectively, these studies demonstrate that restoring ecological fire regimes, promoting multifunctional landscapes, and integrating advanced decision support tools can substantially reduce wildfire hazard while sustaining ecosystem functions. They also reveal significant governance barriers, including fragmented policies, limited investment in prevention, and challenges in incorporating social demands into territorial planning. By synthesising these insights, this editorial identifies several strategic priorities for advancing NbSs in fire-prone landscapes: mainstreaming prevention within governance frameworks, strengthening the science–practice interface, investing in long-term socio-ecological monitoring, managing trade-offs transparently, and empowering local communities. Together, the findings highlight that effective NbSs emerge from the alignment of ecological, technological, institutional, and social dimensions, offering a coherent pathway toward more resilient, biodiverse, and fire-adaptive landscapes. As a neighborhood-scale derivative of the Business Improvement District (BID) model, the Neighborhood Business Improvement District (NBID) represents a collaborative governance framework aimed at fostering spontaneous urban regeneration. Its successful establishment critically depends on building consensus among diverse stakeholders during the preparatory phase. This study addresses a significant gap by investigating the psychological mechanisms that shape stakeholders’ willingness to engage in NBIDs prior to their formation. Employing an exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews in the Tiyuan North Community (Tianjin) and the Yulin East Road Community (Chengdu). Insights from the qualitative phase informed a subsequent quantitative survey administered to 215 stakeholders in Tianjin. Data were analyzed using regression analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results reveal that stakeholders’ performance expectations and collaborative willingness are significantly influenced by three core confidence factors: “Confidence in Authority Support (AS)” (particularly “Confidence in Council Representation”), “Confidence in Organization Capability (OC)” (especially “Confidence in Coordination Ability”), and “Confidence in Multi-party Collaboration.” Crucially, “Confidence in Enabling collaboration (MC_3)” itself acts as a key mediator, translating institutional trust into performance expectations. This study contributes a novel “Confidence–Expectation” framework to the literature on collective action and offers practical, context-sensitive insights for designing collaborative community governance structures aimed at sustainable urban regeneration in China and beyond. This study explores how school principals evacuated from their schools in the wake of the 7 October 2023 war perceived their unique challenges, the strategies they adopted, and the ways in which their agency was shaped during the extreme crisis. Using semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 33 displaced principals from elementary, middle, secondary, and special education schools, we identified four interconnected dimensions of the principals’ agency during wartime. Intrapersonal agency reflected the principal’s inner identity as a foundation for action. Critical agency emerged from frustration with systemic failures and bureaucratic obstacles, motivating the pursuit of meaningful change. Collaborative agency was expressed in building and maintaining trust-based networks and partnerships that enabled effective solutions. Finally, proactive agency was driven by an internal desire for growth and influence, promoting innovative strategies and renewal processes at organizational, emotional, and community levels. This leadership framework for understanding principalship in wartime highlights agency as a holistic framework that enables principals not only to ensure the survival of their schools, but also to respond to chaotic realities. Practically, the findings inform the design of models for ensuring educational continuity in emergencies, and tailored support mechanisms for displaced educational communities. Full article

Microglia-derived small extracellular vesicles (MGEVs) are key mediators of neuroimmune communication, yet their cross-species comparability and translational relevance remain poorly defined. Here, we establish a harmonized framework to compare the molecular and biochemical signatures of sEVs derived from immortalized mouse (BV2) and human (HMC3) microglial cells as well as assess their bioactivity on a human Schwann cell (HuSC) line. MGEVs were isolated via MISEV-aligned size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and characterized by nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and immunoblotting for canonical EV markers CD9, CD63, CD81, TSG101. Human and mouse MGEVs exhibited similar morphology but displayed distinct membrane tetraspanin protein enrichment patterns. Functionally, mouse and human MGEVs attenuated HuSC migration while enhancing HuSC proliferation and their resistance to H2O2-induced oxidative stress, with human MGEVs providing stronger protective effects, suggesting they retain similar core functional properties. Short, non-coding-miRNA sequencing analysis identified 196 shared miRNAs (Spearman ρ = 0.72) with species-specific enrichment: human MGEVs-derived miRNAs favored regenerative and metabolic pathways, whereas mouse MGEVs-derived miRNAs aligned more so with inflammatory signaling. This study delivers the first integrated cross-species blueprint of MGEVs, revealing conserved neuroprotective actions alongside species-biased miRNA cargo that define translational boundaries and highlight human-relevant MGEV signatures for therapeutic innovation, therefore contributing to the importance of considering these differences in translational research. Background: In an increasingly volatile global business environment, supply chain resilience has become a strategic imperative, particularly for firms operating in developing economies. Guided by Dynamic Capabilities Theory (DCT), this study examines how AI-powered tools foster an innovation culture comprising communication, creativity, and learning, and how these dimensions enhance supply chain resilience measured through flexibility, efficiency, and velocity. Methods: A quantitative research design was employed using survey data collected from 270 supply chain and operations managers in Jordanian manufacturing firms. Twelve direct hypotheses were tested using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. Results: The findings indicate that AI-powered tools significantly influence communication, creativity, and learning. Communication and creativity positively affect all three dimensions of supply chain resilience. Learning significantly improves efficiency but shows no significant effect on flexibility or velocity, indicating that learning is mainly utilized for process improvement rather than rapid adaptation. Conclusions: The study demonstrates that AI adoption alone is insufficient to build resilient supply chains unless supported by innovation-oriented cultural capabilities. The findings extend DCT by clarifying the differentiated role of learning in resilience building and provide actionable guidance for managers seeking to align AI investments with cultural development in resource-constrained manufacturing contexts and long-term competitive advantage. In this digital era, many companies are integrating new solutions involving Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based automation systems to optimize processes, reach higher efficiency, and help them with decision-making. While implementing these changes, various challenges may arise, including resistance to AI integration from employees. This study examines how employees’ perceived benefits, concerns, and trust regarding AI-driven algorithmic decision-making influence their comfort with AI-driven algorithmic decision-making in the workplace. This study employed a quantitative method by surveying employees in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Lebanon with a final sample size of 388 participants. The results demonstrate that employees are more likely to feel comfortable with AI-driven algorithmic decision-making in the workplace if they believe AI will increase efficiency, promote fairness, and decrease errors. Unexpectedly, employee concerns were positively associated with comfort, suggesting an adaptive response to AI adoption. Lastly, comfort with AI-driven algorithmic decision-making is positively correlated with greater levels of trust in AI systems. These findings provide actionable guidance to organizations, underscoring the need to communicate clearly about AI’s role, address employees’ concerns through transparency and human oversight, and invest in training and reskilling initiatives that build trust and foster responsible, employee-centered adoption of AI. Background/Objectives: Dementia represents a growing public health challenge. The WHO Global Action Plan on the Public Health Response to Dementia emphasizes early detection, risk reduction, and innovation as key priorities. Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI), defined as the emergence of persistent neuropsychiatric symptoms in older individuals, represents a potential marker of early neurodegeneration and possible window for early intervention. This review explores the role of MBI in dementia prevention, mapping current evidence within the WHO Global Action Plan framework. Methods: A comprehensive search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and the official WHO website, during 1 September 2025–10 November 2025, without time restrictions. Eligible sources included original clinical studies, reviews, and policy documents addressing MBI, dementia prevention, and public health. Data were thematically synthesized according to the seven objectives of WHO: (1) dementia as a public health priority, (2) dementia awareness and friendliness, (3) dementia risk reduction, (4) dementia diagnosis, treatment, care and support, (5) support for dementia carers, (6) information systems for dementia, and (7) dementia research and innovation. Results: Accumulating evidence indicates that MBI assessment can capture early behavioral manifestations of neurodegenerative and other forms of dementia, correlating with fluid, neuroimaging and genetic biomarkers. Integrating MBI screening through the easy-to-administer MBI Checklist (MBI-C) into clinical and community-based care, including telemedicine pathways and research, may enhance early identification and personalized interventions, enrich the pool for clinical trials, and facilitate research in biomarker and therapy. MBI-related research further supports its integration in remote digital monitoring and population-based prevention. Conclusions: Embedding MBI-informed screening and interventions into national dementia strategies aligns with WHO objectives for early, equitable and scalable prevention and brain health.
