Background/Objective: Executive functions (EFs) are essential in the daily management of arthritis, as they influence treatment adherence, decision-making, and the ability to cope with disease-related challenges. The objective of this study was to compare EFs alongside functional status and quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and examine their associations with disease activity and clinical variables. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 140 patients (70 RA, 70 PsA) were assessed using the Stroop-TBAG, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), and Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (ADEXI). Functional status and quality of life were measured with the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and WHOQOL-BREF, respectively. Correlations with disease activity (DAS28-CRP), age, and disease duration were examined. Results: RA patients had significantly higher disease activity and longer disease duration. They showed poorer performance on the Stroop Test (color–word time: 61.6 ± 14.8 vs. 52.4 ± 10.9 s, p < 0.001; errors: 3.2 ± 2.1 vs. 2.1 ± 1.5, p = 0.001), more WCST perseverative errors (p = 0.002), and higher ADEXI inhibition scores (13.9 ± 2.5 vs. 12.9 ± 3.0, p = 0.013). DAS28-CRP was correlated with EF impairments, disability, and poorer quality of life in RA (p < 0.05). In PsA, EFs remained relatively stable, although higher disease activity was associated with worse HAQ scores (p = 0.001). Treatment type was not linked to EF, but patients on combination therapy reported lower physical (p = 0.009) and psychological (p = 0.014) quality of life, along with higher HAQ scores (p = 0.016). Conclusions: This study revealed that patients with RA exhibit more pronounced executive dysfunction, along with lower ADL skills and quality of life compared to those with PsA. These findings highlight the need for multidimensional assessment strategies in inflammatory arthritis, especially in RA, where cognitive and functional outcomes are closely tied to clinical burden. This study utilized eye-tracking technology to explore the role of visual word segmentation cues in Tibetan reading, with a particular focus on the effects of dictionary-based and psychological word segmentation on reading and lexical recognition. The experiment employed a 2 × 3 design, comparing six conditions: normal sentences, dictionary word segmentation (spaces), psychological word segmentation (spaces), normal sentences (green), dictionary word segmentation (color alternation), and psychological word segmentation (color alternation). The results revealed that word segmentation with spaces (whether dictionary-based or psychological) significantly improved reading efficiency and lexical recognition, whereas color alternation showed no substantial facilitative effect. Psychological and dictionary word segmentation performed similarly across most metrics, though psychological segmentation slightly outperformed in specific indicators (e.g., sentence reading time and number of fixations), and dictionary word segmentation slightly outperformed in other indicators (e.g., average saccade amplitude and number of regressions). The study further suggests that Tibetan reading may involve cognitive processes at different levels, and the basic units of different levels of cognitive processes may not be consistent. These findings hold significant implications for understanding the cognitive processes involved in Tibetan reading and for optimizing the presentation of Tibetan text. Full article

The human circadian rhythm is connected to the body’s endogenous clock and can influence people’s natural sleeping habits as well as a variety of other biological functions. According to research, various electric light sources in interior locations can disrupt the human circadian rhythm. Many psychological studies, on the other hand, reveal that different colors can have varied connections with and a variety of effects on people’s emotions. In this study, the effects of light source attributes and interior space paint color on human circadian rhythm were studied using 24 distinct computer simulations. Simulations were performed using the ALFA plugin for Rhinoceros 6 on an unfurnished bedroom 3D model at night. Results suggest that cooler hues, such as blue, appear to have an unfavorable effect on human circadian rhythm at night, especially when utilized in spaces that are used in the evening, which contradicts what psychologists and interior designers advocate in terms of the soothing mood and nature of the color. Furthermore, the effects of Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) and the intensity of a light source might be significant in minimizing melanopic lux to prevent melatonin suppression at night. These insights are significant for interior designers, architects, and lighting professionals aiming to create healthier living environments by carefully selecting lighting and color schemes that support circadian health. Incorporating these considerations into design practices can help mitigate adverse effects on sleep and overall well-being, ultimately contributing to improved occupant comfort and health. This study analyzes Brazilian consumer behavior regarding quality and visual cues in fresh red meat and cooked beef. Using eye tracking to collect visual attention metrics and psychological scales to assess food behavior, the research examines how visual attention to beef attributes impacts product choice. A discrete choice method combined nine hypothetical products with varied attributes. Results showed that consumers display different visual behaviors toward cues, influencing their probability of choosing a product. For fresh beef, color was the most significant factor, especially bright red and brown hues. Color influenced both the time to first fixation and total fixation time, while breed also affected total fixation time. Dark-red color and unspecified breed information increased the purchase probability, while Nellore breed and brown color decreased it. Total fixation numbers were significantly impacted by color, breed, marbling, and price. In cooked beef, tenderness, price, and flavor were key visual cues. Tenderness and flavor influenced the time to first fixation, whereas price and flavor impacted the number of fixations. This research contributes to understanding visual cues and attention in food choices, suggesting strategies for enhancing beef labeling and communication to better inform Brazilian consumers. Creating grayscale images from a color reality has been an inherent human practice since ancient times, but it became a technological challenge with the advent of the first black-and-white televisions and digital image processing. Decolorization is a process that projects visual information from a three-dimensional feature space to a one-dimensional space, thus reducing the dimensionality of the image while minimizing the loss of information. To achieve this, various strategies have been developed, including the application of color channel weights and the analysis of local and global image contrast, but there is no universal solution. In this paper, we propose a bio-inspired approach that combines findings from neuroscience on the architecture of the visual system and color coding with evidence from studies in the psychology of art. The goal is to simplify the decolorization process and facilitate its control through color-related concepts that are easily understandable to humans. This new method organizes colors in a scale that links activity on the retina with a system of opponent and complementary channels, thus allowing the adjustment of the perception of warmth and coolness in the image. The results show an improvement in chromatic contrast, especially in the warmth and coolness categories, as well as an enhanced ability to preserve subtle contrasts, outperforming other approaches in the Ishihara test used in color blindness detection. In addition, the method offers a computational advantage by reducing the process through direct pixel-level operation. Full article

Urban waterfront streets are important mediators that reflect a city’s image and characteristics. They play a positive role in enhancing residents’ cohesion, mental and physical health, and social interactions. Human perceptions represent individuals’ psychological experiences and feelings toward the surrounding environment. Previous studies have explored the impact of urban street-built environmental factors on perceptions; however, research focusing on waterfront street environments and their impacts on human perceptions remains limited. Therefore, exploring the specific impact of waterfront street environmental characteristics on different dimensions of human perception is essential for guiding the development of livable cities. Based on Street View images (SVIs), this study applied artificial neural networks and machine learning semantic segmentation techniques to obtain physical feature data and human perception data of the Murasaki River waterfront line spaces in Kitakyushu, Japan. In addition, correlation and regression analyses were conducted to explore the specific impact of physical features on different dimensions of human perception in waterfront line spaces, and corresponding optimization strategies were proposed. The results show that street greenness significantly enhances perceptions of safety, wealth, and beauty, while effectively reducing boredom and depression. Furthermore, the building visual ratio contributes to increased street vitality. On the other hand, physical features such as openness, spatial indicators, and environmental color diversity have negative effects on positive perceptions, including safety and vitality. In particular, openness significantly increases boredom and depression. This study advances the exploration of urban waterfront street environments from the perspective of human perception, providing a theoretical foundation for improving the spatial quality of waterfront streets and offering references for human-centered urban planning and construction. Successful Treatment of Hair Loss and Restoration of Natural Hair Color in Patient with Alopecia Areata Due to Psychological Disorder Using Exosomes: Case Report with 6-Month Follow-Up

Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disorder causing non-scarring hair loss, which is often triggered by psychological stress. Conventional treatments, such as corticosteroids and immunotherapy, show variable efficacy and can cause side effects like hair discoloration. Exosome therapy, utilizing extracellular vesicles, presents a promising alternative, though its use in stress-related AA remains underexplored. A 39-year-old male with unifocal AA on the right parietal scalp developed hair loss following emotional distress after his fiancée’s death. Methotrexate and prednisolone were ineffective, prompting a bioregenerative approach using rose stem cell-derived exosomes (RSCEs) combined with thulium laser therapy. Six monthly sessions of RSCEs (20 mg/vial, 10 billion exosomes) were administered, with laser pre-treatment enhancing absorption. Within one month, vellus hair regrowth appeared, progressing to an increased density and pigmentation at three months. By six months, complete regrowth and natural pigmentation were achieved, with reduced inflammation confirmed by trichoscopy. The therapy was well-tolerated, with no adverse effects. This case highlights RSCE therapy as a promising treatment for stress-induced AA, achieving significant regrowth without corticosteroid-related side effects. Further studies are needed to validate its efficacy and refine protocols for broader clinical applications. Full article

Humans interact with virtual environments for a variety of purposes, and the use of telemedicine services and e-health platforms has become increasingly significant in recent years. Telepsychology is an emerging service and is understood as the provision of psychological aid and counseling through the use of telecommunication technologies. This study investigates the impact of visual backgrounds in a mental health simulation app and explores the decision-making of potential patients for telepsychology. In this experimental study, we developed an instrument to assess the preferences for manipulated features of photomontages and portraits. A total of 310 participants from diverse backgrounds were surveyed about their preferences regarding visual backgrounds and silhouettes for this hypothetical service, with key independent variables such as complexity, naturalness, and color hues being manipulated. Our findings represent the first example of data collected on background preferences in telepsychology. The results suggest a preference for backgrounds with medium complexity and naturalness for clinical settings. Additionally, we observed variations in preferences based on gender and age. These findings highlight the importance of customizing visual elements to enhance patient engagement in telepsychology. Full article

Commercial progress concerning biobased materials has been slow, with success depending on functionality and emotional responses. Emotional interaction research provides a novel way to shift perceptions of biobased materials. This study proposes a human-centered emotional design framework using biobased tea waste to explore how sensory properties (form, color, odor, surface roughness) shape emotional responses and contribute to sustainable wellbeing. We used a mixed-methods approach combining subjective evaluations (Self-Assessment Manikin scale) with physiological metrics (EEG, skin temperature, pupil dilation) from 24 participants. Results demonstrated that spherical forms and high surface roughness significantly enhanced emotional valence and arousal, while warm-toned yellow samples elicited 23% higher pleasure ratings than dark ones. Neurophysiological data revealed that positive emotions correlated with reduced alpha power in the parietal lobe (αPz, p = 0.03) and a 0.3 °C rise in skin temperature, whereas negative evaluations activated gamma oscillations in central brain regions (γCz, p = 0.02). Mapping these findings to human factors engineering principles, we developed actionable design strategies—such as texture-optimized surfaces and color–emotion pairings—that transform tea waste into emotionally resonant, sustainable products. This work advances emotional design’s role in fostering ecological sustainability and human wellbeing, demonstrating how human-centered engineering can align material functionality with psychological fulfillment. Homonegativity is associated with several adverse physical and mental health outcomes in gay men. However, the intersection between homonegativity and racism remains little investigated in Brazil. The aim of this study was to assess, in a sample of cisgender Brazilian gay men, associations between skin color, homonegativity, psychological distress, and socioeconomic variables. Method: A cohort of 229 Brazilian gay men, 151 (66%) white and 78 (34%) black or brown were assessed. Participants completed the Internalized Homophobia Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory-II, and the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results: In the general sample, high levels of homonegativity, symptoms of depression, and trait and state anxiety were found, particularly among young and low-income individuals. Black and brown participants reported significantly higher levels of trait and state anxiety, but not depression or homonegativity. Black and brown skin color were a predictor of trait and state anxiety, but not of homonegativity or depression. Conclusions: The high levels of psychological distress and homonegativity found in the general sample indicate the importance of developing preventive interventions of racial discrimination and sexual prejudice for the general community and psychoeducational and therapeutic interventions for Brazilian gay men, regardless of skin color. They also suggest the relevance of customizing these interventions to meet the specificities of black/brown Brazilian gay men, a population doubly exposed to the burden of stigma, considering the intersection between racial and sexual stigma in the Brazilian sociocultural reality. Coastal historic and cultural districts are distinctive urban public spaces which reflect the urban cultural and historical narratives. As an important symbol, coastal historic and cultural districts’ building colors play a crucial role in enhancing the historic and cultural districts’ visual quality and shaping the urban coastal landscape. Japan was one of the earliest countries to research urban color and building color regulation. This study selected Mojiko in Japan as the study site using street-view images, semantic segmentation technology, and ColorImpact4 software to collect information about the street building color. Based on the Moon–Spencer (M–S) color coordination theory and applied psychology methods, this study evaluated the building color quality and street color harmony from objective and subjective perspectives. It explored the impact of the building color on the coastal historic and cultural districts’ landscape quality. The results indicated that the building color of Mojiko generally presented a harmonious and unified characteristic. Most street buildings were soft, warm color tones, with higher color harmony and continuity. However, there were some problems, such as colors disrupting the overall street color environment, or color combinations were overly uniform. This study proposed a comprehensive method for building color analysis and evaluation, which is a reference value for guiding the color planning and construction for coastal historic and cultural districts’ landscape control. The aesthetics of clear aligners is a critical factor that can influence patient satisfaction and psychological and social well-being. However, their transparency can be compromised by exposure to staining agents. This study aimed to evaluate the color stability of PET-G aligners following prolonged exposure to common daily substances, including food, tobacco products, and cleaning agents. Flat samples of PET-G (n = 220) were immersed in various solutions, including coffee, tea, Coca-Cola, red wine, a colloidal silver-based disinfectant, nicotine, artificial saliva, cigarette smoke, and mixtures of saliva with smooth, coffee, and nicotine. Immersion times of 10 (n = 110) and 15 days (n = 110) were randomly assigned. Colorimetric assessments were conducted by measuring L*a*b* parameters before and after immersion, and total color change (ΔE) was calculated. Non-parametric statistical tests revealed significant color changes in PET-G samples after both immersion durations, with pairwise comparisons indicating notable differences in ΔE values among groups exposed to different substances, particularly coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola. The findings highlight the psychological and social impact of aligner staining on patient confidence and compliance. Understanding these effects highlights the need for enhanced patient education to improve aligner aesthetics and satisfaction. Full article

Aristotle is often regarded as providing a potentially appropriate model for a naturalistic human psychology that is able to reconcile the commonly opposed normative or “manifest” and factual or “scientific” images of the world and restore to the world the qualities that constitute its value. Such Aristotelian features were taken up after Newton by Goethe in his Theory of Color in his attempt to restore the actual color to the world that had seemingly been drained of it by Newtonian science. Here, I argue that beneath the “modificationalist” elements that Goethe took from Aristotle lies a mathematical approach to color originating in Plato that exploits similarities between color and tonal consonances and dissonances. This study investigates the role of information boundaries in organic food packaging and their impact on consumers’ purchase intentions, aiming to uncover how packaging information design can drive sustainable consumption. Although previous research has extensively explored factors such as background color, shape, and positioning, the influence of information boundaries has received less attention. Through three experiments involving 766 participants, this study delves into the psychological mechanisms influencing sustainable consumption. Experiment 1 explores how information boundaries (presence vs. absence) affect purchase intention and confirms that health perception mediates this relationship. Experiment 2, using virtual brands to eliminate brand familiarity bias, further validates the positive effect of information boundaries on purchase intention through heightened health perceptions. Experiment 3 investigates the moderating role of certification label structures, showing that information boundaries enhance purchase intentions when ingredient-level cues are presented, whereas boundary-free designs are more effective for product-level cues. Our research demonstrates that driving consumer purchases of organic products through strategic packaging design contributes significantly to achieving sustainability goals. These findings provide actionable insights for businesses and policymakers aiming to develop packaging strategies that promote long-term sustainability and environmentally responsible consumer behavior, ultimately contributing to the achievement of global sustainable development goals. This study focuses on the visual attention of residents and tourists to elements of urban landscapes from above. It screens out elements that attract viewers’ attention, assesses their aesthetics, and explores how these aesthetic evaluations affect the psychology of place identity. We tracked data from 30 participants, collected responses from 237 participants, and observed differences in visual behaviors and emotional connections to place identity. The results show that while residents and tourists exhibit similar visual behaviors when viewing the same landscape, they have large differences in their perceptual behaviors for different visual elements and have very different familiarity levels in the place identity dimension. Landmark buildings attract strong visual attention despite their low proportion in the overall landscape. Aesthetic factors such as the color vividness of elements like water, mountains, and landmark buildings significantly affect place identity. This study shows that combining eye-tracking and psychometric analysis can effectively evaluate urban landscape perception and provide valuable insights for visual planning and preservation efforts in historic neighborhoods.
