Mediating Impact of Intranasal Oxytocin on the Interaction Between Irritability and Reactive Aggression in Youth with Severe Irritability

Objective: Irritability and reactive aggression are transdiagnostic features that are predictive of adverse long-term outcomes. This investigation examined whether intranasal oxytocin administration impacts the interaction between irritability and reactive aggression, and whether these effects can be detected at a neural level via a facial expression processing task during functional MRI (fMRI). Methods: In this study, 40 children and adolescents with severe irritability and psychiatric diagnoses of disruptive mood and behavioral disorders were assigned to either intranasal oxytocin or placebo administration over a 3-week period in a randomized, double-blind trial (ClinicalTrials, NCT02824627). Clinical measures and fMRI during a facial expression processing task were collected pre- and post-intervention. Brain regions sensitive to oxytocin administration were determined using whole-brain statistical analyses, with post hoc analyses to determine whether changes in the neural activity mediated the relationship between changes in irritability and reactive aggression across the intervention period. Results: Youth who received intranasal oxytocin administration exhibited significant decreases in irritability and reactive aggression compared to their counterparts in the placebo group. Further, oxytocin administration was associated with significant increases in neural activity in the right superior prefrontal cortex, which fully mediated the relationship between improvements in irritability and improvements in reactive aggression. Conclusions: Intranasal oxytocin significantly reduced irritability and reactive aggression in youth, as well as neural activity in the prefrontal cortex, such that increases in the cortical activity fully mediated the relationship between changes in irritability and reactive aggression. Taken together, these findings may reflect oxytocin-related enhancements in emotional regulation in youth with severe irritability, a potential therapeutic mechanism for mitigating reactive aggression. Introduction: This study evaluated the performance of automated dual-energy computed tomography (DECT)-based quantification of perfusion defects (PDs) in acute pulmonary embolism and examined its correlation with clinical parameters. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 171 patients treated for moderate-to-severe acute pulmonary embolism, who underwent DECT imaging at two separate time points. PDs were quantified using a fully automated AI-based segmentation method that relied exclusively on iodine perfusion maps. This was compared with a semi-automatic clinician-guided segmentation, where radiologists manually adjusted thresholds to eliminate artifacts. Clinical variables including the Miller obstruction score, right-to-left ventricular diameter ratio, oxygen saturation, and patient-reported symptoms were also collected. Results: The semiautomatic method demonstrated stronger correlations with embolic burden (Miller score; r = 0.4, p < 0.001 at follow-up) and a negative correlation with oxygen saturation (r = −0.2, p = 0.04). In contrast, the fully automated AI-based quantification consistently produced lower PD values and demonstrated weaker associations with clinical parameters. Conclusions: Semiautomatic quantification of PDs currently provides superior accuracy and clinical relevance for evaluating lung PDs in acute pulmonary embolism. Future multimodal AI models that incorporate both anatomical and clinical data may further enhance diagnostic precision. Full article

Given the severe global traffic safety challenges—including threats to human lives and socioeconomic impacts—this study analyzes visual behavior to promote sustainable transportation, improve road safety, and reduce resource waste and pollution caused by accidents. Four typical road sections, namely, turning, straight ahead, uphill, and downhill, were selected, and the eye movement data of 23 drivers in different driving stages were collected by aSee Glasses eye-tracking device to analyze the visual gaze characteristics of the drivers and their transfer patterns in each road section. Using Markov chain theory, the probability of staying at each gaze point and the transfer probability distribution between gaze points were investigated. The results of the study showed that drivers’ visual behaviors in different road sections showed significant differences: drivers in the turning section had the largest percentage of fixation on the near front, with a fixation duration and frequency of 29.99% and 28.80%, respectively; the straight ahead section, on the other hand, mainly focused on the right side of the road, with 31.57% of fixation duration and 19.45% of frequency of fixation; on the uphill section, drivers’ fixation duration on the left and right roads was more balanced, with 24.36% of fixation duration on the left side of the road and 25.51% on the right side of the road; drivers on the downhill section looked more frequently at the distance ahead, with a total fixation frequency of 23.20%, while paying higher attention to the right side of the road environment, with a fixation duration of 27.09%. In terms of visual fixation, the fixation shift in the turning road section was mainly concentrated between the near and distant parts of the road ahead and frequently turned to the left and right sides; the straight road section mainly showed a shift between the distant parts of the road ahead and the dashboard; the uphill road section was concentrated on the shift between the near parts of the road ahead and the two sides of the road, while the downhill road section mainly occurred between the distant parts of the road ahead and the rearview mirror. Although drivers’ fixations on the front of the road were most concentrated under the four road sections, with an overall fixation stability probability exceeding 67%, there were significant differences in fixation smoothness between different road sections. Through this study, this paper not only reveals the laws of drivers’ visual behavior under different driving environments but also provides theoretical support for behavior-based traffic safety improvement strategies. Amid intensifying global ESG regulations and the expanding influence of green finance, China’s digital economy policies have emerged as key institutional instruments for promoting corporate sustainability. Leveraging the implementation of the National Big Data Comprehensive Pilot Zone as a quasi-natural experiment, this study utilizes panel data of Chinese listed firms from 2009 to 2023 and applies multi-period Difference-in-Differences (DID) and Spatial DID models to rigorously identify the policy’s effects on corporate ESG performance. Empirical results indicate that the impact of digital economy policy is not exerted through a direct linear pathway but operates via three institutional mechanisms, enhanced information transparency, eased financing constraints, and expanded fiscal support, collectively constructing a logic of “institutional embedding–governance restructuring.” Moreover, disruptive technological innovation significantly amplifies the effects of the transparency and fiscal mechanisms, but exhibits no statistically significant moderating effect on the financing constraint pathway, suggesting a misalignment between innovation heterogeneity and financial responsiveness. Further heterogeneity analysis confirms that the policy effect is concentrated among firms characterized by robust governance structures, high levels of property rights marketization, and greater digital maturity. This study contributes to the literature by developing an integrated moderated mediation framework rooted in institutional theory, agency theory, and dynamic capabilities theory. The findings advance the theoretical understanding of ESG policy transmission by unpacking the micro-foundations of institutional response under digital policy regimes, while offering actionable insights into the strategic alignment of digital transformation and sustainability-oriented governance. The right to development, an inherent human right for all, emphasizes that all individuals and communities have the right to participate in, contribute to, and benefit from development that ensures the full realization of human rights. In Kenya, where a significant portion of the population faces poverty and vulnerability to climate change, access to rights-based needs such as clean water, healthcare, and education still remains a critical challenge. This study explored the implementation of a Human Rights-Based approach to community development through a Public–Private Development Partnership model (PPDP), with a focus on alleviating poverty and improving access to rights-based services at the community level in Narok and Nakuru counties. The research aimed to identify critical success factors for scaling the PPDP model and explore its effects on socio-economic empowerment. The study employed a mixed-methods approach for data collection, using questionnaires to obtain quantitative data, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews with community members, local leaders, and stakeholders to gather qualitative data. We cleaned and analyzed all our data in R (version 4.4.3) and used the chi-square to establish the significance of differences between areas where the PPDP model was implemented and control areas where it was not. Results reveal that communities with the PPDP model experienced statistically significant improvements in employment, income levels, and access to rights-based services compared to control areas. The outcomes underscore the potential of the PPDP model to address inclusive and sustainable development. This study therefore proposes a scalable pathway beginning with access to rights-based needs, followed by improved service delivery, and culminating in economic empowerment. These findings offer valuable insights for governments, development practitioners, investment agencies, and researchers seeking community-driven developments in similar socio-economic contexts across Africa. For the first time, it can be adopted in the design and implementation of development projects in rural and local communities across Africa bringing into focus the need to integrate rights-based needs at the core of the project. Persons with disabilities face barriers to accessing sexuality education. For those who identify as queer, these challenges are compounded by stigma, ableism, and heteronormativity, resulting in distinct and overlooked experiences. This study explored the sexuality education needs of persons with disabilities who identify as queer in Kenya—a neglected demographic—using a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through a focus group discussion with six participants and analyzed thematically. Three themes emerged: invisibility and erasure; unprepared institutions and constrained support networks; and agency and everyday resistance. Educational institutions often overlook the intersectional needs of persons with disabilities who identify as queer, leaving them without adequate tools to navigate relationships, sexuality, and rights. Support systems are often unprepared or unwilling to address these needs. Societal attitudes that desexualize disability and marginalize queerness intersect to produce compounded exclusion. Despite these challenges, participants demonstrated agency by using digital spaces and informal networks to resist exclusion. This calls for policy reforms that move beyond tokenism to address the lived realities of multiply marginalized groups. Policy reform means not only a legal or governmental shift but also a broader cultural and institutional process that creates space for recognition, protection, and participation. Full article

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport conducted a demonstration project targeting pilot areas to commercialize drone delivery services in urban areas and to present a standard model. In this study, flight data on drone delivery routes in Ulju and drone hovering in Yeosu were collected and analyzed for flight safety. Since there are no domestic or international regulations on the stability of drone flight, we were given the task of analyzing whether drone path flight should be maintained within a 10 m error range from the planned path line by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and whether hovering works while satisfying the left and right radius errors and altitude errors within 3 m. Accordingly, the drone flight path data analyzed in Ulju met the criteria of up to 1.07%, and the hovering data analyzed in Yeosu met the criteria of less than 3% for the entire section data. Therefore, the drone flight stability evaluation analyzed in this paper is considered to have been passed. Based on the results of this study, is the data are expected to serve as a cornerstone for establishing guidelines for drone delivery flight data analysis regulations. Full article

Background/Objectives: Malnutrition is a common problem in children with cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of this study was to investigate the suitability and diagnostic performance of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) z-score in diagnosing wasting in children with CP, and its impact on diagnostic accuracy when evaluated concomitantly with additional clinical factors (birth weight, history of phototherapy). Methods: This single-center, cross-sectional study included 83 children with CP, aged 6 months–17 years, followed-up in our clinic. Anthropometric measurements (MUAC, Body Mass Index (BMI)) and clinical data (birth weight, history of phototherapy, Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS)) were prospectively collected. Wasting was defined according to the BMI z-score ≤ −2 criteria. The diagnostic performance of MUAC z-score was evaluated by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis. The contribution of additional covariates was examined using logistic regression analysis and the backward elimination method. Results: MUAC z-score alone demonstrated good discrimination in diagnosing wasting with an Area Under the Curve (AUC) value between 0.805 and 0.821, but its sensitivity was limited (67.0%). No statistically significant difference was found in diagnostic performance between MUAC measurements of the right arm, left arm, and the unaffected arm (p > 0.050). In logistic regression analysis, MUAC z-score (p = 0.001), birth weight (p = 0.014), and a history of phototherapy (p = 0.046) were found to be significantly associated with wasting malnutrition. The simplified model including these variables yielded an AUC value of 0.876. Conclusions: MUAC z-score is a usable tool for wasting malnutrition screening in children with CP. Although its sensitivity is limited when used alone, its diagnostic accuracy increases when evaluated concomitantly with additional clinical factors such as birth weight and a history of phototherapy. This combined approach may offer clinicians a more robust tool for the early diagnosis and management of wasting malnutrition in children with CP. Full article

(1) Background: Evidence from non-human animal and spaceflight analog studies have suggested that traveling to outer space could have a significant impact on the structural properties of the hippocampus, a brain region within the medial temporal lobe that is critical for learning and memory. Here, we tested this hypothesis in a group of astronauts who participated in a six-month mission in the International Space Station (ISS). (2) Methods: We collected magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from a sample of 17 (9 males, 8 females) astronauts before and after the ISS mission, and calculated percent gray matter volume changes in the whole hippocampus and its (anterior, body, and posterior) subregions in both hemispheres. (3) Following the six-month mission in the ISS, we found a significantly decreased volume in the whole left hippocampus; in addition, when looking at subregions separately, we detected a significantly decreased volume in the anterior subregion of the left hippocampus and the body subregion of the right hippocampus. We also found a significantly decreased volume in the whole right hippocampus of male astronauts as compared to female astronauts. (4) Conclusions: This study, providing the very first evidence of hippocampal volumetric changes in astronauts following a six-month mission to the ISS, could have significant implications for cognitive performance during future long-duration spaceflights. Xerostomia, the subjective complaint of a dry mouth, is frequently associated with salivary flow reduction and/or salivary gland hypofunction. This condition significantly impacts an individual’s quality of life and oral health, including difficulties in speaking, chewing, and swallowing. Xerostomia may be caused by autoimmune diseases, xerogenic medications, and radiation therapy. Our objective was to identify differentially expressed proteins in the saliva of patients with medication and autoimmune disease-associated xerostomia compared to non-xerostomic control subjects. Two groups of individuals (N = 45 total) were recruited: non-xerostomic subjects (NX-group; n = 18) and xerostomic patients (XP-group; n = 27). Dried saliva spot samples were collected from major salivary glands, i.e., parotid (left and right) and submandibular glands. Proteomic analysis was performed by deep nanoLC-MS/MS. Differential protein expression in the XP-group relative to the NX-group was determined by the Mann–Whitney U-test with FDR Benjamini–Hochberg correction (padj < 0.05). The Search Tool for Recurring Instances of Neighboring Genes (STRINGv12.0) was used to generate interaction networks and perform pathway analysis. A total of 1407 proteins were detected. Of these, 86 from the left parotid gland, 112 from the right parotid gland, and 73 from the submandibular gland were differentially expressed proteins (DEPs). Using STRING analysis, we identified, for the first time, several neurodegenerative disease-associated networks, primarily involving the downregulation of the 20S proteasome core complex and glyoxalase proteins across salivary glands. In this study, we determined neuronal dysregulation and impaired methylglyoxal (MGO) detoxification, possibly through reduced protein expression of glyoxalase Parkinson’s Disease (PD) Protein 7 (encoded by the PARK7 gene) in major salivary glands of xerostomic patients. Indeed, impaired MGO detoxification has been previously shown to cause salivary gland dysfunction in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes. Based on other DEPs associated with neurodegenerative disorders, our results also suggest a possible deficiency in the parasympathetic nervous system innervation of salivary glands, warranting further investigation. The aim of the current study was to determine the scale and underlying causes for the waste of raw and processed fruits and vegetables in Polish households. A survey was conducted on a representative sample of 1100 respondents. The collected empirical data were analyzed using statistical tools such as non-parametric tests, multiple regression methods, and logistic regression. This study assessed the level and determinants of waste of raw and processed fruits and vegetables, identified the reasons for this waste and their impact on its extent, and analyzed the effect of waste prevention methods (including processing) on the scale of product losses. This study showed that the scale of waste of processed fruits and vegetables in Polish consumer households is significantly lower than that of raw products. The level of waste for both raw and processed products vary depending on place of residence, education, income, household size, and, in the case of processed fruits and vegetables, also the age of respondents. The main reason for fruit and vegetable losses in households is missing the product’s expiration date. Logistic regression analysis showed that the most effective strategies for reducing the waste of raw fruits and vegetables include purchasing the right quantities and freezing them. A Fresh Perspective on Freshwater Data Management and Sharing: Exploring Insights from the Technology Sector

It is well established that effective management and restoration of freshwater ecosystems is often limited by the availability of reusable data. Although numerous public, private, and nonprofit organizations collect data from freshwater ecosystems, much of what is collected remains inaccessible or unusable by Rights holders and end users (including researchers, practitioners, community members, and decision-makers). In Canada, the federal government plans to improve freshwater data sharing practices through the newly formed Canada Water Agency, which is currently drafting a National Freshwater Data Strategy. Our study aimed to support these efforts by synthesizing insights from the technology sector, where data management and sharing practices are more mature. We interviewed 12 experts from the technology sector, asking them for advice on how to improve data sharing practices in the freshwater science sector. Using a Reflexive Thematic Analysis of participants’ responses to semi-structured interview questions, we identified nine broad recommendations. Recommendations centred on motivating open data sharing, promoting data reuse through data licences, training and skill building, and developing standards and digital solutions that enable data discovery, accessibility, interoperability, and reuse. These recommendations can support the numerous initiatives that are working to improve access to high-quality freshwater data and help address the pressing crisis of global freshwater ecosystem degradation. Maintaining body symmetry in sports characterized by high lateralization is crucial for optimizing long-term athletic performance and mitigating injury risk. This study aimed to evaluate the extent of morphological asymmetry in anthropometric features among elite professional fencers. Additionally, the presence of functional asymmetry and its associations with morphological asymmetry were assessed. Thirty-two Polish adult female fencers, aged 18–33 yrs, were examined. Data collection involved a questionnaire survey, anthropometric measurements, calculation of anthropological indices, and assessment of functional asymmetry. For the 24 bilateral anthropometric features, small differences were found in seven characteristics: foot length, subscapular skinfold thickness, upper arm circumference, minimum and maximum forearm circumference, upper limb length, and arm circumference in tension. Morphological asymmetry index did not exceed 5%. Left-sided lateralization of either the upper or lower limbs was associated with significantly high asymmetry, specifically indicating larger minimum forearm circumferences in the right limb. Continuous, individualized monitoring of morphological asymmetry and its direction in athletes is essential, demanding concurrent consideration of functional lateralization. This ongoing assessment establishes a critical baseline for evaluating training adaptations, reducing injury susceptibility, and optimizing rehabilitation strategies. Deeper investigation of symmetry within non-dominant limbs is warranted to enhance our understanding. Full article

The pelvis is the most dimorphic part of the human skeleton, primarily because of its involvement in the birth process. Many sexually dimorphic traits are concentrated in the coxal bones, which form the larger part of the birth canal. The present study aimed to assess the sex differences in coxal bone size and to develop machine learning (ML) models for sex estimation based on coxal bone measurements. The sample included abdominal computed tomography scans of 276 adult Bulgarians. Three-dimensional models of the pelves were generated using InVesalius. The three-dimensional coordinates of 34 landmarks located on the right and left coxal bones were collected in MeshLab. Based on the landmark coordinates, various measurements characterizing the coxal bones were calculated. The coxal bone dimensions were tested for significant differences with respect to sex, age, and laterality. Support Vector Machines and logistic regression were employed to train models for sex estimation. The results demonstrate strong sexual dimorphism in coxal bone dimensions along with some bilateral and age-related differences. The trained ML models classify male and female bones with very high accuracy, ranging between 95% and 100%. Full article

p-Cresyl sulfate (PCS), a gut-derived uremic toxin with proinflammatory and cytotoxic effects, has been implicated in cardiovascular injuries among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Aortic stiffness (AS), assessed by carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), is a recognized predictor of cardiovascular risk. This study investigated the association between serum PCS levels and AS in patients with nondialysis-dependent CKD. In total, 165 patients with nondialysis-dependent CKD were enrolled. Clinical data and fasting blood samples were collected. Arterial stiffness (AS) was assessed bilaterally by measuring carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) on both the left and right sides. A value above 10 m/s was considered indicative of increased stiffness. Serum PCS levels were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Fifty patients (30.3%) had AS. The AS group was significantly older and had higher diabetes prevalence, systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, urinary protein-creatinine ratio, and PCS levels than the control group. In the multivariate analysis, both PCS (odds ratio [OR]: 1.097; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.024–1.175; p = 0.008) and age (OR: 1.057; 95% CI: 1.025–1.090; p < 0.001) were independently associated with AS. In conclusion, elevated serum PCS and older age were independently associated with AS. Thus, PCS is a potential early marker of vascular damage in CKD. Full article
