Background: Spirituality is increasingly seen as a key component of patient-centered care, especially in serious illness or surgery. However, its role among surgical patients in Eastern Europe remains underexplored. Objective: To assess daily spiritual experiences among surgical patients compared to healthy individuals in the Bucovina region (northeastern Romania). Methods: This observational case-control study included 102 participants (51 surgical patients and 51 healthy controls), recruited between March 2023 and April 2024. Participants completed the validated Romanian version of the Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale (DSES). Results: Surgical patients reported significantly higher mean DSES scores (M = 66.27, SD = 16.40) than healthy individuals (M = 55.06, SD = 12.81; p < 0.001). Higher scores were also associated with female gender (p = 0.002), older age, and oncological conditions. Widowed and highly educated participants showed a trend toward higher spirituality, though it was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Surgery may intensify spiritual experiences, possibly as a coping response to perceived risk. Addressing spiritual needs in perioperative care—particularly among women, older adults, and oncology patients—could enhance holistic care and improve patient well-being. Full article

Predicting forest trail visitation is essential for sustainable management and policy development, including infrastructure planning, safety operations, and conservation. However, due to numerous informal access points and complex external influences, accurately monitoring visitor numbers remains challenging. This study applied random forest, gradient boosting, and LightGBM models with Bayesian optimization to predict daily visitor counts across six sections of the National Daegwallyeong Forest Trail, incorporating variables such as weather conditions, social media activity, COVID-19 case counts, tollgate traffic volume, and local festivals. SHAP analysis revealed that tollgate traffic volume and weekends consistently increased visitation across all sections. The impact of temperature varied by section: higher temperatures increased visitation in Kukmin Forest, whereas lower temperatures were associated with higher visitation at Seonjaryeong Peak. COVID-19 cases demonstrated negative effects across all sections. By integrating diverse variables and conducting section-level analysis, this study identified detailed visitation patterns and provided a practical basis for adaptive, section- and season-specific management strategies. These findings support flexible measures such as seasonal staffing, congestion mitigation, and real-time response systems and contribute to the advancement of data-driven regional tourism management frameworks in the context of evolving nature-based tourism demand. The archaeological complex of Sambor Prei Kuk is identified with Īśānapura, the capital of the Chenla Kingdom in the early 7th century, a political predecessor to the Angkor Empire. Previous studies have largely focused on the eastern temple zone, where numerous Hindu religious structures are concentrated, while the western moated city area—presumably the core of urban and political activity—has remained underexplored. This paper presents the results of recent archaeological excavations at a large central mound within the city zone, which is hypothesized to have functioned as a key administrative facility. The excavation revealed a large-scale and uniquely configured terraced structure, unprecedented within the site, and radiocarbon dating suggests its construction dates from the mid 6th to mid 7th century. Notably, a Chinese historical source from the same period, the Book of Sui, describes a “Great Hall” in Īśānapura where the king administered state affairs. The characteristics and spatial context of the excavated structure suggest a possible correspondence with this account. In addition, LiDAR-derived topographic data identified multiple linear and structural features extending eastward from the mound, indicating that it may have stood at the rear of a more extensive administrative compound. These findings offer new insights into the urban structure of Īśānapura and the political architecture of early Khmer civilization. Full article

Ensuring consistent progress toward cities’ net-zero emission goals requires understanding key dimensions of urban climate governance—particularly the motivations driving municipalities toward net zero and the critical barriers and enablers along this pathway. Current knowledge on these critical aspects is fragmented, lacking a holistic framework and empirical prioritization of key factors. We developed an integrated analytical framework and empirically distilled the most salient motivations, barriers, and enablers through a large-scale survey targeting 489 net-zero-committed municipalities—known as “Zero Carbon Cities”—across Japan. With responses from 309 municipalities, we deliver the first systematic mapping of factors perceived as most influential by Japanese local authorities. The results indicate that municipalities are primarily motivated by seizing local economic development opportunities (enhanced local energy conditions, financial gains and savings, and local industry revitalization), future-proofing communities against disasters, and enhancing the local quality of life. Key barriers and enablers were identified across four categories: municipal resources and authority (budgets, dedicated staff, and empowered climate agencies), knowledge and expertise (staff climate competence), institutional coherence (cross-departmental coordination and stakeholder involvement), and political will and leadership (the presence of climate champions and awareness within city halls and among residents). Accordingly, we discuss implications and derive recommendations toward strengthened local action in Japan and beyond. Full article

Urban trails, as vital urban spaces that integrate historical context with contemporary life, play a central role in the rise of deep tourism and the “City Walk” phenomenon. Their spatial legibility positions them as distinctive narrative media, serving as a key channel for promoting urban sustainable development and enhancing citizens’ sense of well-being. However, existing research has yet to establish a comprehensive and systematic framework for evaluating the “spatial narrative” of urban trail systems. This study proposes a dual-perspective quantitative framework for evaluating a spatial narrative, combining objective spatial dimensions with human experiential data to identify strengths and potentials for improvement. The Southwest Regional Trail in Chongqing (comprising the Zhongshan Fourth Road Section, People’s Assembly Hall Section, and Datianwan Section) was used as a case study. First, multi-source spatial data were analyzed via space syntax and ArcGIS to evaluate narrative value from an objective spatial perspective. Next, in-depth questionnaire interviews were conducted to collect subjective data, which were analyzed in SPSS to produce a structured analysis of participant feedback. The findings indicate that (1) Among the three sections of the Southwest Regional Trail, the narrative potential zones rank highest in the Zhongshan Fourth Road Section, followed by the People’s Assembly Hall Section and the Datianwan Section. (2) Urban trails characterized by rich narrative themes and cultural activities are more attractive to visitors. (3) The qualities of narrative symbols, routes, and educational elements are the key factors that specifically influence visitors’ satisfaction with the narrative experience on urban trails. Based on these results, we propose targeted planning and design recommendations for the Southwest Regional Trail. The evaluation methodology and process proposed in this study can provide references for design professionals and relevant urban development departments in conducting spatial narrative quantitative evaluations and optimizing sustainability place-making strategies. In the global low-carbon era, building energy conservation has achieved significant success. However, especially in the culture and tourism industry, there are many brick–wood buildings that imitate ancient styles. As their appearance authenticity and structural safety must be maintained, energy-saving retrofits face multiple constraints. For such buildings, regulating building energy consumption through the renovation of the enclosure structure has practical value in supporting the achievement of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. This study addresses the contradiction between the preserving architectural forms and improving energy efficiency in the energy-saving renovation of brick–wood buildings that imitate ancient styles. It presents a “Three-Micro” technical system grounded in the minimum-intervention principle, integrating micro-intervention implantation, micro-realignment regulation, and micro-renewal iteration. Through modular node design, it combines traditional construction with modern energy-saving techniques and systematically devises an energy-saving retrofit plan for such existing buildings. Through simulation and verification using the case of the Northwest Corner Tower in the Imperial City of Shengjing, the results show that the energy-saving rate of the building itself is 58.47%, while the comprehensive energy-saving rate is 87.56%. Both meet the evaluation criteria for ultra-low energy consumption buildings under the relevant standards, which proves the feasibility of the “Three-Micro” technical system. It provides solutions for the energy-saving renovation of similar buildings, especially those brick–wood buildings that imitate ancient styles and have a high degree of completion (a high level of imitation of ancient architecture). At the same time, it also holds important reference value for the energy-saving renovation of some non-core ancient buildings that are commonly used in everyday life, such as those serving as ticket offices, exhibition halls, administrative offices, etc. Full article

The percentage of historical heritage buildings in Italy is substantial. Many of these buildings are abandoned or not adequately restored for public access due to safety concerns. However, some are managed by city councils and made available to local communities. These heritage buildings, valued for their historical significance, are now frequently used for live events, including musical performances by ensembles and small groups. This paper deals with the acoustics of two rooms provided with barrel-vaulted ceilings: Sisto V Hall in Naples and Aula Magna at the University of Parma. These spaces are structurally very similar, differing mainly in length. Acoustic measurements conducted in both halls reveal reverberation times of approximately 4.5 s at mid frequencies, resulting in poor speech clarity. This is primarily due to the presence of reflective surfaces, as the walls and ceilings are plastered, and the floors are tiled. To optimize their acoustic properties for functions such as celebrations, gatherings, and conferences, an acoustic design intervention was proposed. Digital models of the halls were calibrated and used to correct the acoustics by incorporating absorbing panels on the walls and carpeting on the floors of the central walk path. This treatment successfully balanced the reverberation time to approximately 1.3–1.4 s at mid frequencies, making speech more intelligible. Additionally, an amplified audio system was analyzed to enhance sound distribution, ensuring uniform coverage, even in the last rows of seating. Under amplified conditions, sound pressure levels (SPLs) range between 90 dB and 93 dB, with appropriate gain control applied to the column array speakers. Full article

In recent years, technological advancements have significantly transformed the public sector, with many institutions embracing digital solutions to enhance service delivery. Romanian city halls are actively incorporating digitalization into their sustainable development strategies, aiming to improve service efficiency and accessibility. This study examines the adaptability of Romanian city halls in the face of technological changes. By evaluating the official web portals of all 103 municipalities in Romania using 23 indicators, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state (mid 2024) of e-services delivered via the web portals of the respective municipality. Even though the study findings are indicating a certain degree of maturity in digitalization, with most municipalities offering online services such as property tax payments, public transportation information, and civil status documents, it also reveals significant disparities in the quality and availability of these services across the country, underscoring the need for more standardized digitalization efforts. This research contributes valuable insights for policymakers and public institutions aiming to enhance service delivery through digital means and highlights the crucial role of technology in public sector transformation. The conclusions emphasize the importance of the adaptability of public institutions to ensure continuity and efficiency in service delivery. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive framework for evaluating urban heat resilience, incorporating urban climatology models, their characteristics, and simulation programs. Utilizing the local climate zone (LCZ) classification method, this research explores how urban geomorphology influences the thermal characteristics of the area. This study integrates spatial data at different “levels of detail” (LOD), from the meso- to building scales, emphasizing the significance of detailed LOD 3 models acquired through 3D laser scanning. The results demonstrate the ability of these models to identify urban heat islands (UHIs) and to simulate urban planning scenarios, such as increasing green spaces and optimizing building density, to mitigate the UHI effect. The ST3D 3D model of the city of Split, represented using an LOD 2 object model, is utilized for meso- and local-scale analyses, while LOD 3 models derived from laser scanning provided in-depth insights at the building scale. The case studies included the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Geodesy building on the University of Split campus and the old town hall in the densely built city center. This framework highlights the advantages of integrating GIS and BIM technology with urban climate analyses, offering tools for data-driven decision-making and fostering sustainable, climate-resilient urban planning. This article discusses key historical architectural structures in Cambodia and Nepal—the dharmasālā of King Jayavarman VII (c. 1122–1218 CE) and sattal (also known as sattra) structure from Licchavi-era Nepal (c. 450–750 CE). These structures have served a variety of purposes for their local communities in the past and continue to fulfill similar roles even today. In historical Asian cities, the central role of these structures, which were evidently influenced by Buddhism, highlights the importance that the community infrastructure had within Buddhism. Such infrastructure not only brought communities together but also served the needs of the saṅgha. Mentions of halls as “mote halls” are not rare within the Buddhist literature either, with mentions of great assembly halls, or santhāgāra, where the members of the community gathered to discuss matters of social and political interest. A notable hall described in the Jātaka is Mahosadha’s great hall from Māhā-ummagga-jataka. These halls, which are central in the concept of urban settlements and their authority within the Buddhist idea of governance, are a form of community-oriented “commons” infrastructures that can be looked at as “third places” that foster action and speech for public participation in governance. This, we propose, should be seen as a crucial element of Buddhist governance. Full article

High school students face critical psychological challenges during adolescence, including academic pressures and educational decision-making. Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration provides a framework for understanding growth through disintegration and reintegration, with perfectionistic traits acting as intrinsic motivators for self-improvement. This study examined the psychological profiles of 641 Taiwanese high school students: 207 mathematically and scientifically talented students (MSTS), 187 verbally talented students (VTS), and 247 regular students (RS). Using the ME III, refined from the ME II, and the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, our research assessed overexcitabilities (OEs) and perfectionism traits. MSTS and VTS scored significantly higher in Intellectual and Imaginational OEs than RS, with VTS also overperforming in sensual OE. MSTS and VTS showed higher personal standards, while VTS excelled in organization, and RS reported higher parental criticism. Emotional OE correlated with perfectionism, such as concern over mistakes, doubts about actions, and parental criticism, while Intellectual OE positively correlated with personal standards and negatively with parental criticism. Intellectual and Emotional OEs jointly predicted personal standards and organization; while Sensual, Intellectual, and Emotional OEs predicted doubts about actions, etc. These findings underscore the importance of tailored educational and counseling strategies to address the unique needs of gifted students, fostering environments that enhance their abilities and overall well-being. Promoting alternative modes of transportation such as cycling represents a valuable strategy to minimize environmental impacts, as confirmed in the main targets set out by the European Commission. In this regard, in cities throughout the world, there has been a significant increase in the construction of bicycle paths in recent years, requiring effective maintenance strategies to preserve their service levels. The continuous monitoring of road networks is required to ensure the timely scheduling of optimal maintenance activities. This involves regular inspections of the road surface, but there are currently no automated systems for monitoring cycle paths. In this study, an integrated monitoring and assessment system for cycle paths was developed exploiting Raspberry Pi technologies. In more detail, a low-cost Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), a Global Positioning System (GPS) module, a magnetic Hall Effect sensor, a camera module, and an ultrasonic distance sensor were connected to a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. The novel system was mounted on a e-bike as a test vehicle to monitor the road conditions of various sections of cycle paths in Rome, characterized by different pavement types and decay levels as detected using the whole-body vibration awz index (ISO 2631 standard). Repeated testing confirmed the system’s reliability by assigning the same vibration comfort class in 74% of the cases and an adjacent one in 26%, with an average difference of 0.25 m/s2, underscoring its stability and reproducibility. Data post-processing was also focused on integrating user comfort perception with image data, and it revealed anomaly detections represented by numerical acceleration spikes. Additionally, data positioning was successfully implemented. Finally, awz measurements with GPS coordinates and images were incorporated into a Geographic Information System (GIS) to develop a database that supports the efficient and comprehensive management of surface conditions. The proposed system can be considered as a valuable tool to assess the pavement conditions of cycle paths in order to implement preventive maintenance strategies within budget constraints. Sustainable Digital Innovation for Regional Museums Through Cost-Effective Digital Reconstruction and Exhibition Co-Design: A Case Study of the Ryushi Memorial Museum

While national museums focus on broader national narratives, regional museums function as vital community hubs, establishing deeper local connections and facilitating intimate interactions between local residents and their heritage. These regional museums face dual challenges in their sustainable digital transformation, including the following: technical barriers arising from the high costs of traditional digitization methods like Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and humanistic challenges, including preserving distinctive multi-directional communication and balancing professionalism and authority with collaborative community engagement in the digitization process. This study addresses these challenges through a case study of the Ryushi Memorial Museum in Ota City, Tokyo. We present a comprehensive approach that integrates technical innovation with community engagement, including the following: (1) A cost-effective workflow combining photogrammetry with iPad LiDAR technology for spatial reconstruction, demonstrated through the digital reconstruction of the museum’s Atelier and Jibutsudo (family hall for worshipping Buddha); (2) a new Exhibition Co-Design framework that co-ordinates diverse stakeholders to create digital exhibitions while balancing professional guidance with community participation. Through questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews with museum volunteers, we demonstrate how this approach enhances community engagement by enabling volunteers to incorporate their local knowledge into digital exhibitions while maintaining professionalism and authority. This cost-effective model for spatial reconstruction and community-driven digital design can serve as a reference for other regional museums to help them achieve sustainable digital innovation in the digital age. The Asia-Pacific Body Mass Index Classification and New-Onset Chronic Kidney Disease in Non-Diabetic Japanese Adults: A Community-Based Longitudinal Study from 1998 to 2023

Background/Objectives: Obesity is a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Asians. The Asia-Pacific body mass index (BMI) classification sets lower obesity cutoffs than the conventional BMI classification for all races, generally reflecting the lower BMIs in Asians. This longitudinal study evaluated the association between BMI, as classified by the Asia-Pacific BMI system, and CKD development in non-diabetic Asian adults. Methods: A population-based longitudinal study (1998–2023) was conducted in non-diabetic Japanese adults (hemoglobin A1c < 6.5%) in Zentsuji City (Kagawa Prefecture, Japan). The generalized gamma model was used to assess the relationship between time-varying BMI categories and CKD development, stratified by sex. CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate of <60 mL/min/1.73 m2. BMI was calculated as weight (kg) divided by the square of height (m2) and categorized per the Asia-Pacific classification as overweight (23.0–24.9 kg/m2), obesity class I (25.0–29.9 kg/m2), and obesity class II (≥30.0 kg/m2). Results: CKD developed in 34.2% of 3098 men and 34.8% of 4391 women. The mean follow-up times were 7.41 years for men and 8.25 years for women. During follow-up, the BMI distributions for men were 5.0% underweight, 43.3% normal weight, 25.6% overweight, 24.1% obesity class I, and 2.0% obesity class II; those for women were 7.7%, 50.5%, 20.5%, 18.3%, and 2.9%, respectively. Compared with normal weight, obesity class I was associated with a 6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2–10%) shorter time to CKD onset in men and 5% (95% CI: 2–7%) in women. In both sexes, obesity class II showed shorter survival times than normal weight by point estimates, although all 95% CIs crossed the null value. Conclusions: Obesity, as classified by the Asia-Pacific BMI system, shortened the time to CKD onset in non-diabetic Asians. The conventional BMI cutoff for obesity (≥30.0 kg/m2) may be too high to identify CKD risk in this population. The findings of this study may be useful for public health professionals in designing interventions to prevent CKD. Full article
