Background/Objectives: Access to health services is often limited due to socio-economic and organizational determinants of health systems, which lead to increased unmet healthcare needs. This study aimed to identify access barriers for the general population in Greece, including those that may have emerged following the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey of 1002 Greek citizens. A questionnaire regarding socio-demographics, healthcare utilization, and access to health services was used. Interviews took place between October and November 2022. Results: Of 837 participants who used health services in 2022, 82.6% had a medical consultation, 80.6% took diagnostic tests, and 63.6% visited a pharmacy for pharmaceuticals. Of those having a medical consultation, 33.1% did so at an NHS health unit, while 75% of the participants taking diagnostic tests visited a contracted private laboratory. Out of the 135 participants requiring hospitalization, 62% were hospitalized in a public hospital, while 85% of the participants requiring pharmaceuticals visited a private pharmacy. Access barriers in the past year were reported by 48% of the participants requiring a medical consultation, 34% of the participants requiring diagnostic tests, and 40% of the participants requiring hospitalization. The most common barriers were long waiting times and financial constraints. The main barrier to accessing pharmaceuticals was the availability and administration of the product. Conclusions: The identified healthcare access barriers highlight the vulnerabilities of the current health system in Greece, which were further exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Addressing socioeconomic factors that are considered key access indicators should be the focus of future health policy initiatives. Full article

Online Probability Panels (OPPs) have emerged as essential research infrastructures for social sciences, offering robust tools for longitudinal analysis and evidence-based policy-making. However, the growing role of the Open Science movement demands systematic evaluation of their compliance. This study compares major European OPPs—including LISS, GESIS, the GIP, ELIPSS, and the Swedish and Norwegian Citizen Panels—focusing on their practices of openness, recruitment, sampling, and maintenance. Through a qualitative analysis of public documentation and methodological reports, the study examines how their diverse approaches influence data accessibility, inclusivity, and long-term usability. Our findings highlight substantial variability across panels, reflecting the interplay between national contexts, governance models, technological infrastructures, and methodological choices related to recruitment, sampling, and panel maintenance. Some panels demonstrate stronger alignment with Open Science values—promoting transparency, interoperability, and inclusive engagement—while others operate within more constrained frameworks shaped by institutional or structural limitations. This comparative analysis contributes to the understanding of OPPs as evolving knowledge infrastructures and provides a reference framework for future panel development. In doing so, it offers valuable insights for enhancing the role of OPPs in advancing Open and socially engaged research practices. Full article

Background: Mobility limitation is a pivotal but under-documented dimension of disability in Saudi Arabia. Leveraging the 2017 National Disability Survey, this cross-sectional study provides a population-wide profile of mobility-related physical difficulty. Objectives: Five research aims were pursued: (1) estimate national prevalence and severity by sex; (2) map regional differentials; (3) examine educational and marital correlates; (4) characterize cause, duration, and familial context among those with multiple limitations; and (5) describe patterns of assistive-aid and social-service use. Methods: Publicly available aggregate data covering 20,408,362 Saudi citizens were cleaned and analyzed across 14 mobility indicators and three baseline files. Prevalence ratios and χ2 tests assessed associations. Results: Overall, 1,445,723 Saudis (7.1%) reported at least one functional difficulty; 833,136 (4.1%) had mobility difficulty, of whom 305,867 (36.7%) had mobility-only impairment. Severity was chiefly mild (35% of cases), with moderate (16%) and severe (7%) forms forming a descending pyramid. Prevalence varied more than threefold across the thirteen regions, peaking in Aseer (9.4%) and bottoming in Najran (2.9%). Mobility difficulty clustered among adults with no schooling (36.1%) and widowed status (18.5%), with sharper female disadvantage in both domains (p < 0.001). Among those with additional limitations, chronic disease dominated etiology (56.3%), and 90.1% had lived with disability for ≥25 years; women were overrepresented in the longest-duration band. Aid utilization was led by crutches (47.7%), personal assistance (25.3%), and wheelchairs (22.6%), while 83.8% accessed Ministry rehabilitation services, yet fewer than 4% used home or daycare support. Conclusions: These findings highlight sizeable, regionally concentrated, and gender-patterned mobility burdens, underscoring the need for education-sensitive prevention, chronic-care management, investment in advanced assistive technology, and distributed community services to achieve Vision 2030 inclusion goals. Background/Objectives: Aging is often accompanied by physical and cognitive decline, affecting older adults’ mobility. Virtual reality (VR) offers innovative opportunities to safely practice everyday tasks, such as street crossing. This study was designed as a feasibility and pilot study to explore acceptance, usability, and preliminary effects of a VR-based road-crossing intervention for older adults. It investigates the use of virtual reality (VR) as an innovative training tool to support senior citizens in safely navigating everyday challenges such as crossing roads. By providing an immersive environment with realistic traffic scenarios, VR enables participants to practice in a safe and controlled setting, minimizing the risks associated with real-world road traffic. Methods: A VR training application called “Wegfest” was developed to facilitate targeted road-crossing practice. The application simulates various scenarios commonly encountered by older adults, such as crossing busy streets or waiting at traffic lights. The study applied a single-group pre-post design. Outcomes included the Timed Up and Go test (TUG), Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Results: The development process of “Wegfest” demonstrates how a highly realistic street environment can be created for VR-based road-crossing training. Significant improvements were found in the Timed Up and Go test (p = 0.002, d = 0.784) and fall-related self-efficacy (FES-I, p = 0.005). No change was observed in cognitive function (MoCA, p = 0.56). Participants reported increased subjective safety (p < 0.001). Discussion: The development of the VR training application “Wegfest” highlights the feasibility of creating realistic virtual environments for skill development. By leveraging immersive technology, both physical and cognitive skills required for road-crossing can be effectively trained. The findings suggest that “Wegfest” has the potential to enhance the mobility and safety of older adults in road traffic through immersive experiences and targeted training interventions. Conclusions: As an innovative training tool, the VR application not only provides an engaging and enjoyable learning environment but also fosters self-confidence and independence among older adults in traffic settings. Regular training within the virtual world enables senior citizens to continuously refine their skills, ultimately improving their quality of life. Full article

Personal lifestyle choices contribute up to 75% of national emissions and yet the greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories included in the National Inventory Report (NIR) of Canada provide limited insight on these choices. Better insight can be found using carbon footprint calculators that estimate individual emissions; however, they vary in regard to their input parameters, output data, and calculation methods. This study assessed five calculators, which are popular with the public, or compatibility with the Canadian NIR. A quantitative scoring matrix was developed to assess the output depth, academic proficiency, and effectiveness of the calculators to inform lifestyle changes, alongside NIR alignment. The results showed that the calculator with the overall highest cumulative score across all the comparative criteria was the one offered by Carbon Footprint Ltd. The other calculators that scored highly include CoolClimate Calculator and Carbon Independent. The potential of the calculators in regard to informing low-carbon lifestyles can be improved through the incorporation of more depth in terms of capturing the purchase information of goods and services and providing detailed secondary information to users, including mitigation strategies and carbon offset options. The main driver of incompatibility between the calculator tools and the NIR was the different approaches taken to the emissions inventory, with the NIR using a territorial framework and the calculators being consumption driven. The outcomes of this study demonstrate a global need for the evolution of NIR structuring to increase its relatability with citizens and for the improved standardization of publicly available tools. The address is a key element in the construction of smart cities. When receiving reports from citizens, public security officers need to quickly and accurately locate a crime scene based on the address provided by the reporter. The address from the reporter may be a standard address or it may be a point of interest, abbreviation, or common name. The difficulty in converting the address into a standard address can be solved through the analysis of address elements and address matching. We developed a bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT)-based address feature resolution method and an address-matching algorithm. On this basis, a police force address-matching system for City A was designed and implemented. A Web application system was also developed based on the address database of City A. The developed address resolution and matching method with the database maintenance module successfully matched the reported address to the standard one. Full article

This paper presents a systematic, narrative review of 62 academic publications (2015–2025) that explore the integration of spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) with emerging smart city technologies to improve local governance. SDIs provide a structured framework for managing geospatial data and, in combination with IoT sensors, geospatial and 3D platforms, cloud computing and AI-powered analytics, enable real-time data-driven decision-making. The review identifies four key technology areas: IoT and sensor technologies, geospatial and 3D mapping platforms, cloud-based data infrastructures, and AI analytics that uniquely contribute to smart governance through improved monitoring, prediction, visualization, and automation. Opportunities include improved urban resilience, public service delivery, environmental monitoring and citizen engagement. However, challenges remain in terms of interoperability, data protection, institutional barriers and unequal access to technologies. To fully realize the potential of integrated SDIs in smart government, the report highlights the need for open standards, ethical frameworks, cross-sector collaboration and citizen-centric design. Ultimately, this synthesis provides a comprehensive basis for promoting inclusive, adaptive and accountable local governance systems through spatially enabled smart technologies. Full article

This study examines the training and didactic proposals used to teach flood-related topics in Primary (5–12 years old) and Secondary Education (13–18 years old). This research employs a survey methodology, gathering responses from 726 trainee teachers across two Spanish universities (582 in Primary Education and 144 in Secondary Education). The findings highlight a significant gap in training, as more than half of the participants reported having received no instruction on floods, either during their school years or university studies. However, Secondary Education trainee teachers demonstrated a higher level of preparedness compared to their Primary Education counterparts. Regarding didactic proposals, two approaches stood out: activities based on real experiences (32.6%) and drills/talks led by experts (21.5%). Notably, Primary Education trainee teachers preferred expert-led sessions (24.7%), suggesting a lack of confidence in teaching these topics independently. This study underscores the crucial role of educators in risk reduction. Given their ethical responsibility to equip students with critical thinking skills, proper training is essential to fostering informed citizens capable of making sound decisions in the face of climate-related challenges. Air pollution is a major environmental and public health challenge, especially in urban areas where fine-grained air quality data are essential to effective interventions. Traditional monitoring networks, while accurate, often lack spatial resolution and public engagement. This study presents a novel wearable wireless sensor node (WSN) that was developed within the Horizon Europe SOCIO-BEE project to support air quality monitoring through citizen science (CS). The low-cost, body-mounted WSN measures NO2, O3, and PM2.5. Three pilot campaigns were conducted in Ancona (Italy), Maroussi (Greece), and Zaragoza (Spain), and involved diverse user groups—seniors, commuters, and students, respectively. PM2.5 sensor data were validated through two approaches: direct comparison with reference stations and spatial clustering analysis using K-means. The results show strong correlation with official PM2.5 data (R2 = 0.75), with an average absolute error of 0.54 µg/m3 and a statistical confidence interval of ±3.3 µg/m3. In Maroussi and Zaragoza, where no reference stations were available, the clustering approach yielded low intra-cluster coefficients of variation (CV = 0.50 ± 0.40 in Maroussi, CV = 0.28 ± 0.30 in Zaragoza), indicating that the measurements had high internal consistency and spatial homogeneity. Beyond technical validation, user engagement and perceptions were evaluated through pre-/post-campaign surveys. Across all pilots, over 70% of participants reported satisfaction with the system’s usability and inclusiveness. The findings demonstrate that wearable low-cost sensors, when supported by a structured engagement and data validation framework, can provide reliable, actionable air quality data, empowering citizens and informing evidence-based environmental policy. The digital transformation of public services has led to a surge in the volume and complexity of informatics-related complaints, often marked by ambiguous language, inconsistent terminology, and fragmented reporting. Conventional keyword-based approaches are inadequate for detecting semantically similar issues expressed in diverse ways. This study proposes an AI-powered framework that employs BERT-based sentence embeddings, semantic clustering, and classification algorithms, structured under the CRISP-DM methodology, to standardize and automate complaint analysis. Leveraging real-world interaction logs from a public sector agency, the system harmonizes heterogeneous complaint narratives, uncovers latent issue patterns, and enables early detection of technical and usability problems. The approach is deployed through a real-time dashboard, transforming complaint handling from a reactive to a proactive process. Experimental results show a 27% reduction in repeated complaint categories and a 32% increase in classification efficiency. The study also addresses ethical concerns, including data governance, bias mitigation, and model transparency. This work advances citizen-centric service delivery by demonstrating the scalable application of AI in public sector informatics. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated virtual collaboration, reshaping digital communication, remote work, education, and e-democracy. This study examines the impact of these tools on digital citizen participation through a quantitative cross-sectional survey of n = 1122 participants across diverse demographics. Using stratified purposive sampling, descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and segmentation by demographic and psychological factors, we analyzed how infrastructure quality, personality traits, and social dynamics influenced virtual engagement. While digital platforms have improved accessibility, findings reveal that they often fail to foster interpersonal trust and democratic deliberation. Statistical analyses demonstrated significant correlations between communication effectiveness and relationship quality (ρ = 0.387, p < 0.001), with distinct patterns emerging across age groups, community sizes, and personality types. Infrastructure disparities significantly impacted participation, particularly in rural areas (χ2 = 70.72, df = 12, p < 0.001, V = 0.145). Recommendations include enhancing digital infrastructure, developing adaptive e-governance platforms, and implementing trust-building mechanisms. Despite the limitations of self-reported data and the cross-sectional design, these insights contribute to building more inclusive digital governance frameworks. Future research should employ longitudinal approaches to explore evolving trends in e-democratic participation. Full article

This study examines the constrained social acceptance of small-scale geothermal energy in a rural sub-Saharan region, a critically understudied area, characterised by high energy poverty, heavy dependence on biomass, and suitable for geothermal energy exploration. Small-scale geothermal energy may offer an additional option for decentralised power supply through mini grids. The study investigates public awareness and knowledge level of geothermal energy technologies among the residents of Eka Awoke, Ikwo, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, to assess the potential of the deliberative process to enhance the social acceptance of geothermal energy technologies and the development of an improved participatory framework to aid the discussion. Citizen jury and survey methods, combining qualitative and quantitative research techniques, were employed. This study presents the first in-depth analysis of the social acceptance of small-scale geothermal energy for electricity supply in a rural African context. Pre-deliberative assessments revealed that 36% of the jurors had limited knowledge and expressed environmental concerns. The post-deliberative assessment revealed that over 80% of jurors reported improved understanding and views. The study demonstrates that citizen jury, when combined with surveyed results can serve as a powerful and scalable tool for advancing social acceptance of geothermal energy. These findings provide a solid foundation for policymakers, stakeholders, and energy providers to design more effective communication engagement strategies for sustainable energy transition in the community. While technologies such as e-governance platforms and mobile applications have facilitated participatory processes, their success ultimately hinges on citizen acceptance. This study investigates the factors influencing female citizens’ acceptance of a participatory urban planning application, employing a theoretical model based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and its associated hypotheses. Data were collected through a survey of 390 women and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) via SmartPLS3.2.8. The results demonstrate that perceived usefulness (β = 0.634, p < 0.001) and perceived ease of use (β = 0.321, p < 0.001) significantly predict intention to use, whereas perceived privacy risk exerts a negative influence (β = −0.190, p < 0.001). Environmental attitude (β = 0.396, p < 0.001) and attitude toward participation (β = 0.315, p < 0.001) also enhance perceived usefulness. Due to the impact of the environmental and participatory attitudes of citizens and their social environment on their acceptance of these apps, there is an urgent need to increase the level of citizen awareness and knowledge through targeted education. These findings offer valuable insights for both theoretical advancement and practical policy development in regards to urban governance. Full article

The pressing ecological challenges of the twenty-first century underscore the need for biodiversity protection. The “One Health” approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health, has become increasingly vital. This study investigates the relationship between bird species richness, an important indicator of biodiversity, and both all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates in China. This nationwide county-level ecological study combined citizen science bird data from the China Bird Report Center, all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates of 2021 from the National Mortality Surveillance System, and county-level statistics of population characteristics, socio-economics, education, and healthcare services. We employed univariate and multivariate linear regressions to explore the association between bird diversity and mortality rates. Overall, data from 421 counties revealed a negative association between bird species richness and all-cause mortality rates, with a regression coefficient (95% confidence interval) of −0.197 (−0.376, −0.017). This study also found significant negative associations between bird species richness and cause-specific mortality rates for several diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases (including cerebrovascular and ischemic heart diseases) and cancers (including lung cancer). The effects of associations were similar between both genders. Our findings underscore the significance of biodiversity conservation for public health and highlight the importance of integrated environmental and health policies. Full article

Tokyo Bay is one of the busiest ocean areas for human activity worldwide, characterized by a high density of maritime traffic and industrial development. This area is also recognized as the habitat of the narrow-ridged finless porpoise, an endangered toothed whale. Although the existence of this species has been recognized, its scientific data, such as population size and geographic distribution, are limited in the region. Therefore, using social media, we initiated a research project to collect sighting information on this species in Tokyo Bay. As a result, 27 valid pieces of information on the finless porpoises were collected from July 2024 to the end of February 2025. The sightings were reported mainly in the waters north of Futtsu Cape, indicating that this species is localized in the northern part of Tokyo Bay. Also, most of the reported sightings were of groups of wo or more animals. Notably, a school of at least 30 animals was recorded, marking the most prominent school ever observed in the region and the third largest in Japan. This study highlights the importance of the northern region of Tokyo Bay as a habitat for this species. The effective integration of citizen science with scientific and quantitative research will enhance our understanding of the life history of this endangered species, thereby supporting conservation efforts.
