A novel reflective metasurface (RMS) is proposed in this paper. The MS measures 128 × 128 × 2.794 mm3 and consists of a six-layer vertically stacked structure, with a liquid crystal (LC) cavity in the middle layer. A dual fan-shaped direct current (DC) bias circuit is designed to minimize the interaction between the radio frequency (RF) signal and the DC source, allowing control of the LC dielectric constant via bias voltage. This enables multi-band operation to improve communication capacity and quality for x-band devices. The polarization conversion (PC) structure employs an orthogonal anisotropic design, utilizing logarithmic functions to create two pairs of bowtie microstrip patches for linear-to-circular polarization conversion (LCPC). Simulation results show that for x-polarized incident waves, with an LC dielectric constant of εr = 2.8, left- and right-handed circularly polarized (LHCP and RHCP) waves are achieved in the frequency ranges of 8.15–8.46 GHz and 9.84–12.52 GHz, respectively. For εr = 3.9, LHCP and RHCP are achieved in 9–9.11 GHz and 9.86–11.81 GHz, respectively, and for εr = 4.6, they are in 8.96–9.11 GHz and 9.95–11.51 GHz. In the case of y-polarized incident waves, the MS reflects the reverse CP waves within the same frequency ranges. Measured results show that at εr = 2.8, the axial ratio (AR) is below 3 dB in the frequency ranges 8.16–8.46 GHz and 9.86–12.48 GHz, with 3 dB AR relative bandwidth (ARBW) of 3.61% and 23.46%, respectively. For εr = 4.6, the AR < 3 dB in the frequency range of 9.78–11.34 GHz, with a 3 dB ARBW of 14.77%. Finally, the measured and simulated results are compared to validate the proposed design, which can be applied to various applications within the corresponding operating frequency band. Full article

This paper presents the design, simulation, and experimental validation of a dual-Circularly Polarized (CP) array antenna to be used as single element for a bistatic radar system, aimed at detecting and tracking objects in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The antenna operates at 412 MHz in reception mode and consists of an array of 19 slotted-patch radiating elements with a cavity-based metallic superstrate, designed to support dual circular polarization. These elements are arranged in a hexagonal configuration, enabling the array structure to achieve a maximum realized gain of 17 dBi and a Side Lobe Level (SLL) below −17 dB while maintaining high polarization purity. Two identical analog feeding networks enable the precise control of phase and amplitude, allowing the independent reception of Right-Hand and Left-Hand Circularly Polarized (RHCP and LHCP) signals. Full-wave simulations and experimental measurements confirm the high performance and robustness of the system, demonstrating its suitability for integration into large-scale Space Situational Awareness (SSA) sensor networks. This paper presents a symmetry-driven broadband circularly polarized magnetoelectric dipole antenna with bandpass filtering response, where the principle of symmetry is strategically employed to enhance both radiation and filtering performance. The antenna’s circular polarization is achieved through a symmetrical arrangement of two orthogonally placed metallic ME dipoles combined with a phase delay line, creating balanced current distributions for optimal CP characteristics. The design further incorporates symmetrical parasitic elements—a pair of identical inverted L-shaped metallic structures placed perpendicular to the ground plane at −45° relative to the ME dipoles—which introduce an additional CP resonance through their mirror-symmetric configuration, thereby significantly broadening the axial ratio bandwidth. The filtering functionality is realized through a combination of symmetrical modifications: grid slots etched in the metallic ground plane and an open-circuited stub loaded on the microstrip feed line work in tandem to create two radiation nulls in the upper stopband, while the inherent symmetrical properties of the ME dipoles naturally produce a radiation null in the lower stopband. This comprehensive symmetry-based approach results in a well-balanced bandpass filtering response across a wide operating bandwidth. Experimental validation through prototype measurement confirms the effectiveness of the symmetric design with compact dimensions of 0.96λ0 × 0.55λ0 × 0.17λ0 (λ0 is the wavelength at the lowest operating frequency), demonstrating an impedance bandwidth of 66.4% (2.87–5.05 GHz), an AR bandwidth of 31.9% (3.32–4.58 GHz), an average passband gain of 5.5 dBi, and out-of-band suppression levels of 11.5 dB and 26.8 dB at the lower and upper stopbands, respectively, along with good filtering performance characterized by a gain-suppression index (GSI) of 0.93 and radiation skirt index (RSI) of 0.58. The proposed antenna is suitable for satellite communication terminals requiring wide AR bandwidth and strong interference rejection in L/S-bands. Full article

This paper presents a compact, high-performance metasurface-based leaky-wave MIMO antenna with dimensions of 40 × 30 mm2, achieving a gain of 12.5 dBi and a radiation efficiency of 85%. The antenna enables precise control of electromagnetic waves, featuring a flower-like metasurface (MTS) with coffee bean-shaped arrays on substrates of varying permittivity, separated by a cavity layer to enhance coupling. Its dual-port MIMO design boosts data throughput operating in three bands (3.75–5.25 GHz, 6.4–15.4 GHz, and 22.5–30 GHz), while the leaky-wave mechanism supports frequency- or phase-dependent beamsteering without mechanical parts. Ideal for CubeSat communications, its compact size meets CubeSat constraints, and its high gain and efficiency ensure reliable long-distance communication with low power consumption, which is crucial for low Earth orbit operations. Circular polarization (CP) maintains signal integrity despite orientation changes, and MIMO capability supports high data rates for applications such as Earth observations or inter-satellite links. The beamsteering feature allows for dynamic tracking of ground stations or satellites, enhancing mission flexibility and reducing interference. This lightweight, efficient antenna addresses modern CubeSat challenges, providing a robust solution for advanced space communication systems with significant potential to enhance satellite connectivity and data transmission in complex space environments. In this paper, a printed hybrid-mode antenna for dual-band circular polarization (CP) is proposed. In the proposed antenna, one T-shaped element is fed by a coplanar waveguide and one L-shaped element is loaded to the ground plane. The relationship between the antenna’s geometric parameters and the circular polarization characteristic (axial ratio) is examined through electric current distribution and radiation field components. In addition, the antenna’s resonant modes are investigated through characteristic mode analysis (CMA). Through parametric studies, the range of two frequency ratios is explored, revealing that the antenna operates as a dual-band single-sense CP antenna, even in ranges where the two frequency ratios (the ratio of high frequency to low frequency) are smaller compared to antennas in other studies. The proposed antenna has a frequency ratio of less than 1.5 between the two frequencies and can be flexibly designed. The proposed antenna is designed for the 2.5 GHz band and 3.5 GHz band. The measured bandwidths of 10 dB impedance with a 3 dB axial ratio are 2.35–2.52 GHz and 3.36–3.71 GHz, respectively. Full article

The rapid development of 5G and next-generation wireless systems has increased the demand for antennas that support circular polarization (CP), wide frequency coverage, and a compact size. Achieving wideband CP performance in a low-profile and simple structure remains a key challenge for modern antenna designs. In response to this, this paper presents a compact wide-slot antenna with a single feed, offering a wide operational bandwidth and circularly polarized radiation. The proposed design is excited by a 50 Ohm microstrip feedline, and it is fabricated on an (54 × 50 × 1.6 mm3) FR4 dielectric substrate. On the bottom side of the dielectric substrate, the ground plane is engraved to form a square-shaped radiating slot. The shape of the tuning stub of the antenna is modified in order to attain a wide impedance bandwidth and an axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW). The modifications include inserting a rectangular strip and thin horizontal strips into the tuning stub after tapering its upper corner. On the other hand, the radiating slot is appended by two rectangular stubs. The radiation of the resulted structure has right-hand circular polarization (RHCP). The measured results of the proposed antenna show a −10 dB impedance bandwidth equal to 78% (2.65 GHz, 2.08–4.73 GHz), whereas its broadside 3 dB ARBW is 71.6% over the frequencies (2.31 GHz, 2.07–4.38 GHz), which is compatible with various wireless communication applications. Furthermore, the peak value of the measured gain is equal to 4.68 dB, and its value is larger than 2 dBi along the operational bandwidth of the antenna. Full article

In this paper, a wideband circularly polarized folded reflectarray antenna (CPFRA) based on a transmissive linear-to-circular polarization converter is proposed. The CPFRA consists of a primary reflector and a sub-reflector. To achieve broadband performance, a metasurface-based RA element on the primary reflector surface and a transmissive linear-to-circular polarization converter on the sub-reflector surface are applied. Moreover, the transmissive linear-to-circular polarization converter on the sub-reflector surface helps convert linear polarization to circular polarization. To verify the proposed CPFRA, a prototype is designed, fabricated, and tested. The measured results exhibit that the proposed CPFRA presents a 3 dB gain bandwidth of 27.4% and a 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 23%. The CPFRA achieves a peak gain of 21.2 dBi with an aperture efficiency of 27.2%. The proposed CPFRA is a promising candidate for millimeter-wave (mm-W) satellite communication applications because of its advantages of high gain, low cost, low profile, and broad bandwidth. Microstrip patch antennas (MPAs) are widely used in satellite communication due to their low profile, compact size, and ease of fabrication. This paper presents a design of an X-band microstrip patch antenna using an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure for CubeSat applications. The X-band is preferred for CubeSat missions in high-speed communication, long distance or deep space because it allows communication at higher data rates, and the antenna is smaller than those used for lower frequency bands. In our study, the EBG elements are analyzed, modified and optimized so that the antenna can fit a 10 cm × 10 cm surface area of a standard 3U CubeSat structure while providing a significant high gain and circular polarization (CP). A noticeable point of this research is that the simplicity of the antenna and the EBG structure are being maintained by just using a simple single-probe feed to achieve a total antenna efficiency exceeding 90%, and the measured gain of around 11.7 dBi at the desired frequency of 8.483 GHz. Furthermore, the measured axial ratio (AR) is around 1.4 dB at 8.483 GHz, which satisfied the lower-than-3 dB requirement for CP antennas in general. The simulation, analysis and measured results are discussed in detail. Full article

A circularly polarized (CP) textile antenna is investigated for concurrent on- and off-body wireless communications in the 2.38 GHz medical body area network and 5.8 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical bands in the wireless body area network. The proposed scheme consists of a square microstrip patch antenna (MPA), in which four shorting pins are employed to tune the two resonate modes of TM10 and TM00. Notably, the slant corners on MPA are cut symmetrically to realize unidirectional CP radiation, enabling off-body communication. Moreover, four rotating L-shaped parasite elements are loaded to excite the horizontal polarization mode (TMhp), which is combined with the TM00 mode to implement CP omnidirectional radiation along the human body. For verification, a proof-of-concept prototype with the dimensions of 45 mm × 45 mm × 2 mm was fabricated and characterized. The measured −10 dB impedance bandwidths of 2.5% and 6.7%, the 3 dB AR bandwidths of 2.5% and 2.7%, and the maximum realized gains of −2.8 and 6.8 dBic are achieved in dual bands, respectively. The experimental tests, such as human body loading, structural deformation, and humidity variation, were carried out. In addition, the wireless communication capability was measured and the radiation safety is evaluated. These performances show that the proposed antenna is an appropriate choice for multifunctional wearable applications. Full article

This paper proposes a mechanically reconfigurable multi-polarization antenna based on a 3D-printed anisotropic dielectric polarizer, offering wide bandwidth, high gain, and extremely low cost. The working mechanism of the dielectric polarizer is analyzed, demonstrating its ability to efficiently convert linear polarization (LP) to circular polarization (CP) over a wide frequency range. Furthermore, the polarizer exhibits subwavelength characteristics. For a given duty cycle, its phase response depends only on the height and is independent of the aperture size. This property enables miniaturized and customized designs of the polarizer’s aperture size. Subsequently, the polarizer is placed above a Ku band waveguide and standard horn antennas. The results show that by rotating the dielectric polarizer and adjusting the positions of the antennas, right-handed CP (RHCP), left-handed CP (LHCP), and dual LP radiation switching can be achieved in the 12.4–18.0 GHz band, verifying the quad-polarization reconfigurability. Additionally, the polarizer significantly enhances the gain of the waveguide antenna by approximately 9.5 dB. Furthermore, due to the low-cost 3D printing material, the manufacturing cost of the polarizer is exceptionally low, making it suitable for applications such as anechoic chamber measurements and wireless communications. Finally, the measurement results further validate the accuracy of the simulations. Full article

A period-reconfigurable leaky-wave antenna (LWA) with circular polarization (CP) and fixed-frequency beam scanning (FFBS) is developed in this article. Operating in the Ka-band, this antenna consists of a low-loss groove gap waveguide (GGW) as the slow-wave transmission structure, a circular split-ring patch array on the top layer for radiation, and a slotted ground between them for energy coupling. Each slot is independently and electrically controlled by a pair of PIN diodes under the coupling slot. Thus, the period length of the patches can be manipulated and an LWA with CP and FFBS is achieved with −1th spatial harmonics radiated. The simulation results show that the bean-scanning range from 61° to 63° can be realized during the observation frequency band, with good circular polarization and a peak gain of 17.1 dBi, which is verified by the measurement. This article presents a new design for a dual-band circular polarization microstrip patch antenna that can be used in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications. The proposed antenna consists of an etched circular shape on the radiator side of the antenna with multiple slots and stubs. The bottom side comprises a partial ground plane with multiple horizonal, vertical and square slots. These shapes on the front and bottom sides of the antenna are used to keep the resonant frequencies, impedance bandwidth and axial ratio (AR) at the desired values. The antenna operation is within the WiFi frequency bands, achieving maximum gains of 5.01 and 5.27 dBi at 2.4 and 5 GHz, respectively. Circular polarization (CP) is effectively realized through the implementation of opposite truncated corners and intentionally located stubs. The 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) is significantly enhanced, while a defected ground structure (DGS) is utilized to further improve the bandwidth and gain. The optimized antenna has overall dimensions of 40 × 40 × 1.6 mm3 and demonstrates a wide −10 dB reflection bandwidth of 5.38% (2.396–2.525 GHz) and 9.26% (4.91–5.38 GHz), along with a broad 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of 380 MHz (2.29–2.67 GHz) and 80 MHz (5–5.08 GHz). The proposed antenna is fabricated using a low-cost FR-4 substrate with a dielectric constant of 4.4 and a loss tangent of 0.02. The fabricated antenna is experimentally characterized to verify the design concept as well as to validate the simulation results. It is found that the experimental measurements correlate very well with the simulation results. A comparison with comparable designs in the literature shows that the proposed antenna provides a higher gain with a relatively reduced size. Full article

This paper presents a novel multi-layer, dual-band antenna array designed for WLAN and X-band applications, incorporating several innovative features. The design employs a pentagon-shaped radiating element with parasitic strips to enable dual-band operation. A dual-transformed feed network with chamfered feed strip corners minimizes radiation distortion and cross-polarization while introducing orthogonal phase shifts to achieve circular polarization (CP) at the X-band. A Fabry–Pérot structure, strategically placed above the array, enhances gain in the WLAN band. The antenna demonstrates an impedance bandwidth of 1.8 GHz (S11 < −10 dB) at the WLAN band, with 36% fractional bandwidth, and 4.3 GHz at the X-band, with 43% fractional bandwidth. Measured peak gains are 7 dBi for the WLAN band and 6.8 dBi for the X-band, with favourable S11 levels, omni-directional radiation patterns, and consistent gain across both bands. Circular polarization is achieved within 8.5–10.4 GHz. Experimental results confirm the array’s significant advancements in multi-band performance, making it highly suitable for diverse wireless communication applications. Full article

A novel common-aperture miniaturized antenna with wideband and dual-polarized characteristics is proposed, which consists of a circularly polarized (CP) and a linearly polarized (LP) antenna. The circularly polarized antenna stacked on the upper layer adopts asymmetrical ground and introduces the patch and T-type feed network. On this basis, the meshed reflector structure, which also works as a ground plane for the LP antenna, is added to reduce the influence on circular polarization and achieve directional radiation. The LP antenna stacked in the lower layer uses a monopole structure, and the coaxial feed line perforates the reflector, and thereby the common-aperture antennas are tightly stacked together from top to bottom. Simulation and test are in good accordance, and the results show that the two ports of the antenna are well matched in the range of 5.5 GHz to 7.8 GHz, where peak gains of 8.5 dB and 6 dB are realized for circular polarization and linear polarization, respectively. Moreover, the 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of the CP antenna is 34.3% and the isolation between the two ports is better than 15 dB, suggesting potential applications in the relay platform or drone detection for signal transmission and reception.
