Portland cement production is a major source of global CO2 emissions due to its high energy consumption and calcination processes. This study proposes a sustainable alternative through the partial replacement of cement with alkali-activated pumice, a naturally occurring aluminosilicate material with high regional availability. Mixes with 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% cement replacement were designed for pedestrian slabs exposed to humid tropical conditions. Compressive strength was evaluated using non-destructive testing over a period of 364 days, and carbonation was analyzed at different ages. The results show that mixes with up to 30% pumice maintain adequate strength levels for light-duty applications, although with a more gradual strength development. A significant reduction in carbonation depth was also observed, especially in the mix with the highest replacement level, suggesting greater durability in aggressive environments. These findings support the use of pumice as a viable and sustainable supplementary cementitious material in tropical regions, promoting low-impact construction practices. Full article

The global cement industry remains a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, prompting substantial research efforts toward sustainable construction materials. Lithium slag (LS), a by-product of lithium extraction, has attracted attention as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). This review synthesizes experimental findings on LS replacement levels, fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths), time-dependent deformation (shrinkage and creep), and durability (sulfate, acid, abrasion, and thermal) of LS-modified concretes. Statistical analysis identifies an optimal LS dosage of 20–30% (average 24%) for maximizing compressive strength and long-term durability, with 40% as a practical upper limit for tensile and flexural performance. Fresh-state tests show that workability losses at high LS content can be mitigated via superplasticizers. Drying shrinkage and creep strains decrease in a dose-dependent manner with up to 30% LS. High-volume (40%) LS blends achieve up to an 18% gain in 180-day compressive strength and >30% reduction in permeability metrics. Under elevated temperatures, 20% LS mixes retain up to 50% more residual strength than controls. In advanced systems—autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), one-part geopolymers, and recycled aggregate composites—LS further enhances both microstructural densification and durability. In particular, LS emerges as a versatile SCM that optimizes mechanical and durability performance, supports material circularity, and reduces the carbon footprint. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive review of dealuminated metakaolin (DK), a hazardous industrial by-product generated by the aluminium sulphate (alum) industry and evaluates its potential as a component in cementitious systems for the partial or full replacement of Portland cement (PC). Positioned within the context of waste valorisation in concrete, the review aims to establish a critical understanding of DK formation, properties, and reactivity, particularly its pozzolanic potential, to assess its suitability for use as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), or as a precursor in alkali-activated cement (AAC) systems for concrete. A systematic methodology is used to extract and synthesise relevant data from existing literature concerning DK and its potential applications in cement and concrete. The collected information is organised into thematic sections exploring key aspects of DK, beginning with its formation from kaolinite ores, followed by studies on its pozzolanic reactivity. Applications of DK are then reviewed, focusing on its integration into SCMs and alkali-activated cement (AAC) systems. The review consolidates existing knowledge related to DK, identifying scientific gaps and practical challenges that limit its broader adoption for cement and concrete applications, and outlines future research directions to provide a solid foundation for future studies. Overall, this review highlights the potential of DK as a low-carbon, circular-economy material and promotes its integration into efforts to enhance the sustainability of construction practices. The findings aim to support researchers’ and industry stakeholders’ strategies to reduce cement clinker content and mitigate the environmental footprint of concrete in a circular-economy context. This study investigates the bond behavior of fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites with three common masonry substrates—solid clay bricks (SBs), perforated bricks (PBs), and concrete hollow blocks (HBs)—using knitted polyester grille (KPG) fabric. Through uniaxial tensile tests of the KPG fabric and FRCM system, along with single-lap and double-lap shear tests, the interfacial debonding modes, load-slip responses, and composite utilization ratio were evaluated. Key findings reveal that (i) SB and HB substrates predominantly exhibited fabric slippage (FS) or matrix–fabric (MF) debonding, while PB substrates consistently failed at the matrix–substrate (MS) interface, due to their smooth surface texture. (ii) Prism specimens with mortar joints showed enhanced interfacial friction, leading to higher load fluctuations compared to brick units. PB substrates demonstrated the lowest peak stress (69.64–74.33 MPa), while SB and HB achieved comparable peak stresses (133.91–155.95 MPa). (iii) The FRCM system only achieved a utilization rate of 12–30% in fabric and reinforcement systems. The debonding failure at the matrix–substrate interface is one of the reasons that cannot be ignored, and exploring methods to improve the bonding performance between the matrix–substrate interface is the next research direction. HB bricks have excellent bonding properties, and it is recommended to prioritize their use in retrofit applications, followed by SB bricks. These findings provide insights into optimizing the application of FRCM reinforcement systems in masonry structures. Full article

Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams constructed with low-strength concrete are susceptible to sudden splitting failures in the strut region due to shear–compression stresses. To mitigate this vulnerability, various strengthening techniques, including steel plates, fiber-reinforced polymer sheets, and cementitious composites, have been explored to confine the strut area. This study investigates the structural performance of RC deep beams with low-strength concrete, strengthened externally using an Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) layer. To ensure effective confinement and uniform shear distribution, shear reinforcement was provided at equal intervals with configurations of zero, one, and two vertical shear reinforcements. Four-point bending tests revealed that the ECC layer significantly enhanced the shear capacity, increasing load-carrying capacity by 51.6%, 54.7%, and 46.7% for beams with zero, one, and two shear reinforcements, respectively. Failure analysis through non-linear finite element modeling corroborated experimental observations, confirming shear–compression failure characterized by damage in the concrete struts. The strut-and-tie method, modified to incorporate the tensile strength of ECC and shear reinforcement actual stress values taken from the FE analysis, was used to predict the shear capacity. The predicted values were within 10% of the experimental results, underscoring the reliability of the analytical approach. Overall, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of ECC in improving shear performance and mitigating strut failure in RC deep beams made with low-strength concrete. Full article

The aviation industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining safety and performance standards. One promising area for improvement lies in the use of sustainable materials in airport infrastructure. One of the issues preventing uptake of emerging sustainable technologies is the lack of guidance relating to the opportunities, potential benefits, associated risks and an implementation plan specific to airport pavements. This research reviewed opportunities to incorporate waste materials into rigid airport pavements, focusing on concrete base slabs. Commonly used supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) were considered, as well as recycled aggregates, including recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), recycled crushed glass (RCG), and blast furnace slag (BFS). Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) were also used to quantify the potential for environmental benefit associated with various concrete mixtures, with findings showing 23% to 50% reductions in embodied carbon are possible for selected theoretical concrete mixtures that incorporate waste materials. With considered evaluation and structured implementation, the integration of waste materials into rigid airport pavements offers a practical and effective route to improve environmental outcomes in aviation infrastructure. It was concluded that a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework—assessing financial, environmental, and social factors—guides material selection and can support sustainable decision-making, as does performance-based specifications that enable sustainable technologies to be incorporated into airport pavement. The study also proposed a consequence-based implementation hierarchy to facilitate responsible adoption of waste materials in airside pavements. The outcomes of this review will assist airport managers and pavement designers to implement practical changes to achieve more sustainable rigid airport pavements in the future. Full article

The combined application of fibers and lightweight aggregates (LWAs) represents an effective approach to achieving high-strength, lightweight concrete. To enhance the predictability of the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC), this study conducts an in-depth investigation into its hydration characteristics. In this study, high-strength LWAC was developed by incorporating low water absorption LWAs, various volume fractions of basalt fiber (BF) (0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3%), and a ternary cementitious system consisting of 70% cement, 20% fly ash, and 10% silica fume. The hydration-related properties were evaluated through isothermal calorimetry test and high-temperature calcination test. The results indicate that incorporating 0.1–0.3% fibers into the cementitious system delays the early hydration process, with a reduced peak heat release rate and a delayed peak heat release time compared to the control group. However, fitting the cumulative heat release over a 72-h period using the Knudsen equation suggests that BF has a minor impact on the final degree of hydration, with the difference in maximum heat release not exceeding 3%. Additionally, the calculation model for the final degree of hydration in the ternary binding system was also revised based on the maximum heat release at different water-to-binder ratios. The results for chemically bound water content show that compared with the pre-wetted LWA group, under identical net water content conditions, the non-pre-wetted LWA group exhibits a significant reduction at three days, with a decrease of 28.8%; while under identical total water content conditions it shows maximum reduction at ninety days with a decrease of 5%. This indicates that pre-wetted LWAs help maintain an effective water-to-binder ratio and facilitate continuous advancement in long-term hydration reactions. Based on these results, influence coefficients related to LWAs for both final degree of hydration and hydration rate were integrated into calculation models for degrees of hydration. Ultimately, this study verified reliability of strength prediction models based on degrees of hydration. Full article

This study investigates the impact of partially replacing cement with fly ash (FA) on the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced rubberized concrete (FRRC) incorporating waste tyre rubber and recycled macro-synthetic fibers (MSF). FRRC mixtures were prepared with varying fly ash replacement levels (0%, 25%, and 50%), rubber aggregate contents (0%, 10%, and 20% by volume of fine aggregate), and macro-synthetic fiber dosages (0% to 1% by total volume). The fresh properties were evaluated through slump tests, while hardened properties including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength were systematically assessed. Results demonstrated that fly ash substitution up to 25% improved the interfacial bonding between rubber particles, fibers, and the cementitious matrix, leading to enhanced tensile and flexural performance without significantly compromising compressive strength. However, at 50% replacement, strength reductions were more pronounced due to slower pozzolanic reactions and reduced cement content. The inclusion of MSF effectively mitigated strength loss induced by rubber aggregates, improving post-cracking behavior and toughness. Overall, an optimal balance was achieved at 25% fly ash replacement combined with 10% rubber and 0.5% fiber content, producing a more sustainable composite with favorable mechanical properties while reducing carbon and ecological footprints. These findings highlight the potential of integrating industrial by-products and waste materials to develop eco-friendly, high-performance FRRC for structural applications, supporting circular economy principles and reducing the carbon footprint of concrete infrastructure. Understanding the hydration behavior of cementitious materials is crucial as it governs the setting, strength development and long-term durability of concrete. This study provides fundamental insights into these processes by investigating the early hydration of tricalcium aluminate (C3A) with quartz as a novel model system for multiple clinker phases. Employing a multi-technique approach combining conductivity, calorimetry and microscopy, we systematically examine the concurrent effects of product layer formation, C3A’s particle size and defect density, and salts on dissolution kinetics and early-stage reaction pathways. Results indicate that product layer formation shifted C3A’s rapid dissolution toward diffusion-controlled regimes. Reduced particle size and increased defect density accelerated the dissolution and hydration kinetics. Sulfates and chlorides differentially altered reaction pathways, with preferential sulfate reactivity driving ettringite formation. These mechanistic insights advance fundamental understanding of the hydration behavior of cementitious material. Full article

This paper evaluates the synergistic effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and nanosilica (nS) on the mechanical behavior and deformation properties of engineered cementitious composites (ECCs). ECCs have gained a reputation for high ductility, crack control, and strain-hardening behavior. Nevertheless, the next step is to improve their performance even more through nano-modification and fine-tuning of fiber dosage—one of the major research directions. In the experiment, six types of ECC mixtures were made by maintaining constant PVA fiber content (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0%), while the nanosilica contents were varied (0, 1, 2, 3, and 5%). Stress–strain tests carried out in the form of compression, together with unrestrained shrinkage measurement, were conducted to test strength, strain capacity, and resistance to deformation, which was highest at 80 MPa, recorded in the concrete with 2% nS and 0.5% PVA. On the other hand, the mixture of 1.5% PVA and 3% nS had the highest strain result of 2750 µm/m, which indicates higher ductility. This is seen to be influenced by refined microstructures, improved fiber dispersion, and better fiber–matrix interfacial bonding through nS. In addition to these mechanical modifications, the use of nanosilica, obtained from industrial byproducts, provided the possibility to partially replace Portland cement, resulting in a decrease in the amount of CO2 emissions. In addition, the enhanced crack resistance implies higher durability and reduced long-term maintenance. Such results demonstrate that optimized ECC compositions, including nS and PVA, offer high performance in terms of strength and flexibility as well as contribute to the sustainability goals—features that will define future eco-efficient infrastructure. Sustainability in the construction sector has become a fundamental objective for mitigating escalating environmental challenges; given that concrete is the most widely used man-made material, extending its service life is therefore critical. Among durability concerns, magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) attack is particularly deleterious to concrete structures. Therefore, this study investigates the short- and long-term performance of concrete produced with copper slag (CS)—a massive waste generated by copper mining activities worldwide—employed as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), together with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), obtained from concrete construction and demolition waste, when exposed to MgSO4. CS was used as a 15 vol% cement replacement, while RCA was incorporated at 0%, 20%, 50%, and 100 vol%. Compressive strength, bulk density, water absorption, and porosity were measured after water curing (7–388 days) and following immersion in a 5 wt.% MgSO4 solution for 180 and 360 days. Microstructural characteristics were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis with its differential thermogravimetric derivative (TG-DTG), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The results indicated that replacing 15% cement with CS reduced 7-day strength by ≤10%, yet parity with the reference mix was reached at 90 days. Strength losses increased monotonically with RCA content. Under MgSO4 exposure, all mixtures experienced an initial compressive strength gain during the short-term exposures (28–100 days), attributed to the pore-filling effect of expansive sulfate phases. However, at long-term exposure (180–360 days), a clear strength decline was observed, mainly due to internal cracking, brucite formation, and the transformation of C–S–H into non-cementitious M–S–H gel. Based on these findings, the combined use of CS and RCA at low replacement levels shows potential for producing environmentally friendly concrete with mechanical and durability performance comparable to those of concrete made entirely with virgin materials. Additionally, key mix design innovations, including fiber reinforcement, rubber powder incorporation, and aggregate modification, are evaluated for their roles in increasing energy dissipation. External factors, particularly curing conditions, are also discussed for their influence on the damping performance. The findings consolidate experimental and theoretical insights into how material composition, mix design, and external treatments interact to optimize dynamic resilience. To guide future research, this paper identifies critical gaps including the need for multi-scale numerical simulation frameworks, standardized damping test protocols, and long-term performance evaluation under realistic service conditions. Advancing work in material innovation, optimized mix design, and controlled curing environments will be essential for developing next-generation concretes with superior vibration control, durability, and sustainability. These insights provide a strategic foundation for applications in seismic-prone and vibration-sensitive infrastructure. Full article

This study investigates the effects of incorporating recycled concrete powder (RCP) as a supplementary cementitious material in Portland cement composites at replacement levels of 5–30% by weight. A comprehensive characterization using isothermal calorimetry, electrical conductivity measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy revealed that RCP modified the hydration behavior and microstructural development. The results showed a linear 16.5% reduction in the total heat of hydration (from 145.38 to 121.44 J/g) at 30% RCP content, accompanied by a 26.5% decrease in peak electrical conductivity (19.16 to 14.08 mS/cm) and delayed reaction kinetics. Thermal analysis demonstrated an increased stability of hydration products, with portlandite decomposition temperatures rising by up to 10.8 °C. Microstructural observations confirmed the formation of denser but more amorphous C–S–H phases alongside increased interfacial porosity at higher RCP contents. The study provides quantitative evidence of RCP’s dual functionality as both an inert filler and a nucleation agent, identifying an optimal 20–25% replacement range that balances performance and sustainability. These findings advance the understanding of construction waste utilization in cementitious materials and provide practical solutions for developing more sustainable building composites while addressing circular economy objectives in the construction sector. Three-dimensional (3D) concrete printing (3DCP) has gained significant attention over the last decade due to its many claimed benefits. The absence of effective real-time quality control mechanisms, however, can lead to inconsistencies in extrusion, compromising the integrity of 3D-printed structures. Although the importance of quality control in 3DCP is broadly acknowledged, research lacks systematic methods. This research investigates the feasibility of using ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) as a practical, in situ, real-time monitoring tool for 3DCP. Two different groups of binders were investigated: limestone calcined clay (LC3) and zeolite-based mixes in binary and ternary blends. Filaments of 200 mm were extruded every 5 min, and UPV, pocket hand vane, flow table, and viscometer tests were performed to measure pulse velocity, shear strength, relative deformation, yield stress, and plastic viscosity, respectively, in the fresh state. Once the filaments presented printing defects (e.g., filament tearing, filament width reduction), the tests were concluded, and the open time was recorded. Isothermal calorimetry tests were conducted to obtain the initial heat release and reactivity of the supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Results showed a strong correlation (R2 = 0.93) between UPV and initial heat release, indicating that early hydration (ettringite formation) influenced UPV and determined printability across different mixes. No correlation was observed between the other tests and hydration kinetics. UPV demonstrated potential as a real-time monitoring tool, provided the mix-specific pulse velocity is established beforehand. Further research is needed to evaluate UPV performance during active printing when there is an active flow through the printer. Full article

This article presents a review on the applications of basalt fibers and their composites in infrastructures. The characteristics and advantages of high-performance basalt fibers and their composites are firstly introduced. Then, the article discusses strengthening using basalt fiber sheets and BFRP bars or grids, followed by concrete structures reinforced with BFRP bars, asphalt pavements, and cementitious composites reinforced with chopped basalt fibers in terms of mechanical behaviors and application examples. The load-bearing capacity of the strengthened structures can be increased by up to 60%, compared with those without strengthening. The lifespan of the concrete structures reinforced with BFRP can be extended by up to 50 years at least in harsh environments, which is much longer than that of ordinary reinforced concrete structures. In addition, the fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt can be increased by up to 600% with basalt fiber. The newly developed technologies including anchor bolts using BFRPs, self-sensing BFRPs, and BFRP–concrete composite structures are introduced in detail. Furthermore, suggestions are proposed for the forward-looking technologies, such as long-span bridges with BFRP cables, BFRP truss structures, BFRP with thermoplastic resin matrix, and BFRP composite piles.
