Long-range underwater gliders (LRUGs) have emerged as essential platforms for sustained and autonomous observation in deep and remote marine environments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of their developmental status, performance characteristics, and application progress. Emphasis is placed on two critical enabling technologies that fundamentally determine endurance: lightweight, pressure-resistant hull structures and high-efficiency buoyancy-driven propulsion systems. First, the role of carbon fiber composite pressure hulls in enhancing energy capacity and structural integrity is examined, with attention to material selection, fabrication methods, compressibility compatibility, and antifouling resistance. Second, the evolution of buoyancy control systems is analyzed, covering the transition to hybrid active–passive architectures, rapid-response actuators based on smart materials, thermohaline energy harvesting, and energy recovery mechanisms. Based on this analysis, the paper identifies four key technical challenges and proposes strategic research directions, including the development of ultralight, high-strength structural materials; integrated multi-mechanism antifouling technologies; energy-optimized coordinated buoyancy systems; and thermally adaptive glider platforms. Achieving a system architecture with ultra-long endurance, enhanced energy efficiency, and robust environmental adaptability is anticipated to be a foundational enabler for future long-duration missions and globally distributed underwater glider networks. The development of efficient and sustainable water recycling systems is essential for long-term human missions and the establishment of space habitats on the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Humidity condensate (HC) is a low-strength wastewater that is currently recycled on the International Space Station (ISS). The main contaminants in HC are primarily low-molecular-weight organics and ammonia. This has caused operational issues due to microbial growth in the Water Process Assembly (WPA) storage tank as well as failure of downstream systems. In addition, treatment of this wastewater primarily uses adsorptive and exchange media, which must be continually resupplied and represent a significant life-cycle cost. This study demonstrates the integration of a membrane-aerated biological reactor (MABR) for pretreatment and storage of HC, followed by brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO). Two system configurations were tested: (1) periodic MABR fluid was sent to batch RO operating at 90% water recovery with the RO concentrate sent to a separate waste tank; and (2) periodic MABR fluid was sent to batch RO operating at 90% recovery with the RO concentrate returned to the MABR (accumulating salinity in the MABR). With an external recycle tank (configuration 2), the system produced 2160 L (i.e., 1080 crew-days) of near potable water (dissolved organic carbon (DOC) < 10 mg/L, total nitrogen (TN) < 12 mg/L, total dissolved solids (TDS) < 30 mg/L) with a single membrane (weight of 260 g). When the MABR was used as the RO recycle tank (configuration 1), 1100 L of permeate could be produced on a single membrane; RO permeate quality was slightly better but generally similar to the first configuration even though no brine was wasted during the run. The results suggest that this hybrid system has the potential to significantly enhance the self-sufficiency of space habitats, supporting sustainable extraterrestrial human habitation, as well as reducing current operational problems on the ISS. These systems may also apply to extreme locations such as remote/isolated terrestrial locations, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Full article

Flying wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are an interesting flight configuration, considering its benefits over aerodynamic, structural and added stealth aspects. The existing configurations are thoroughly studied from the literature survey and useful observations with respect to design and analysis are obtained. The proposed design method includes distinct calculations of the UAV and modelling using 3D experience. The created innovative models are simulated with the help of computational fluid dynamics techniques in ANSYS Fluent to obtain the aerodynamic parameters such as forces, pressure and velocity. The optimization process continues to add more desired modifications to the model, to finalize the best design of flying wing frame for the chosen application and mission profile. In total, nine models are developed starting with the base model, then leading to the conventional, advanced and nature inspired configurations such as the falcon and dragonfly models, as it has an added advantage of producing high maneuverability and lift. Following this, fluid structure interaction analysis has been performed for the best performing configurations, resulting in the determination of variations in the structural behavior with the imposition of advanced composite materials, namely, boron, Kevlar, glass and carbon fiber-reinforced polymers. In addition to this, a hybrid material is designed by combining two composites that resulted in superior material performance when imposed. Control dynamic study is performed for the maneuvers planned as per mission profile, to ensure stability during flight. All the resulting parameters obtained are compared with one another to choose the best frame of the flying wing body, along with the optimum material to be utilized for future analysis and development. Satellite-based monitoring of atmospheric column-averaged dry-air mole fraction (XCH4) is essential for quantifying methane (CH4) emissions, yet uncharacterized spatially varying biases in XCH4 observations can cause misattribution in flux estimates. This study assesses the potential of the upcoming TanSat-2 satellite mission to estimate China’s CH4 emission using a series of Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) based on an Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) inversion framework coupled with GEOS-Chem on a 0.5° × 0.625° grid, alongside an evaluation of current TROPOMI-based products against Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) observations. Assuming a target precision of 8 ppb, TanSat-2 could achieve an annual national emission estimate accuracy of 2.9% ± 4.2%, reducing prior uncertainty by 84%, with regional deviations below 5.0% across Northeast, Central, East, and Southwest China. In contrast, limited coverage in South China due to persistent cloud cover leads to a 26.1% discrepancy—also evident in pseudo TROPOMI OSSEs—highlighting the need for complementary ground-based monitoring strategies. Sensitivity analyses show that satellite retrieval biases strongly affect inversion robustness, reducing the accuracy in China’s total emission estimates by 5.8% for every 1 ppb increase in bias level across scenarios, particularly in Northeast, Central and East China. We recommend expanding ground-based XCH4 observations in these regions to support the correction of satellite-derived biases and improve the reliability of satellite-constrained inversion results. Accurately estimating the forest canopy height is essential for quantifying forest biomass and carbon storage. Recently, the ICESat-2 and GEDI spaceborne LiDAR missions have significantly advanced global canopy height mapping. However, due to inherent sensor limitations, their footprint-level estimates often show systematic bias. Tall forests tend to be underestimated, while short forests are often overestimated. To address this issue, we used coincident G-LiHT airborne LiDAR measurements to correct footprint-level canopy heights from both ICESat-2 and GEDI, aiming to improve the canopy height retrieval accuracy across Puerto Rico’s tropical forests. The bias-corrected LiDAR dataset was then combined with multi-source predictors derived from Sentinel-1/2 and the 3DEP DEM. Using these inputs, we trained a canopy height inversion model based on the AutoGluon stacking ensemble method. Accuracy assessments show that, compared to models trained on uncorrected single-source LiDAR data, the new model built on the bias-corrected ICESat-2–GEDI fusion outperformed in both overall accuracy and consistency across canopy height gradients. The final model achieved a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.80, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.72 m and a relative RMSE of 0.22. The proposed approach offers a robust and transferable approach for high-resolution canopy structure mapping and provides valuable support for carbon accounting and tropical forest management. The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-3 (OCO-3) mission provides a new perspective for studying atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Here we assess the potentiality of OCO-3 satellite acquisitions to analyse and monitor the CO2 emissions from Mt. Etna volcano. While OCO-3 data are well-suited for gas analysis on a regional spatial scale, they have not yet been widely utilised for studying volcanic carbon dioxide emissions. The Snapshot Area Map (SAM) acquisition mode enables the capture of targeted snapshots over volcanic regions, allowing for the measurement of CO2 concentrations in the vicinity of volcanic structures. In this work, we analyse 62 OCO-3 images acquired between 2020 and 2023, focusing on measurements within a 20 km radius of Mt. Etna’s summit, where the main craters are located. Atmospheric CO2 concentrations are examined as a function of distance from the summit, and assuming a linear decreasing trend, the angular coefficient is computed. Lower angular coefficient values may indicate a stronger volcanic CO2 contribution. Considering both the number of sampled pixels in each OCO-3 snapshot and the associated uncertainties in the angular coefficient calculation, we identify five days with potentially significant CO2 emissions from Mt. Etna, likely associated with specific volcanic activity phases. The eruptive activity on these five days is further investigated, revealing a possible correlation between elevated gas emissions and intense volcanic phenomena, such as lava fountains. This assessment is supported by thermal activity analyses using SEVIRI, MODIS, and VIIRS satellite data. Full article

Citizen science (CS) is increasingly recognized as a complementary approach for addressing soil health challenges—including erosion, pollution, nutrient imbalances, and biodiversity loss—by harnessing public participation to broaden spatial and temporal data collection. This review synthesizes findings from the following: (i) a systematic analysis of peer-reviewed literature and grey sources, (ii) a database of 96 CS initiatives compiled by the European PREPSOIL project, and (iii) questionnaire surveys and workshops conducted in five Living Labs across Europe. Our analysis indicates that volunteer-driven monitoring can enhance the volume and granularity of soil data, providing critical insights into parameters such as organic carbon content, nutrient levels, and pollutant concentrations. However, persistent challenges remain, including inconsistencies in data validation, volunteer attrition, and concerns regarding digital literacy and data privacy. Despite these challenges, ongoing efforts to standardize protocols, integrate remote sensing and sensor-based validation methods, and employ feedback mechanisms improve data reliability and participant engagement. We conclude that sustained capacity-building, transparent data governance, and stakeholder collaboration, from local communities to governmental bodies, are essential for fully realizing the potential of citizen science in soil conservation. This work is framed within the context of the European Soil Mission, and CS is demonstrated to meaningfully support sustainable land management and evidence-based policymaking by aligning public-generated observations with established scientific frameworks. Mangrove forests are vital ecosystems with the highest global carbon absorption capacity, playing a crucial role in climate change mitigation. Therefore, their conservation and management are essential. However, as mangroves are primarily found in tropical regions, frequent cloud cover and limited accessibility pose significant challenges to effective monitoring using optical satellite imagery. In addition, many developing countries with extensive mangrove coverage face challenges in conducting precise monitoring due to limited technological infrastructure. To overcome these limitations, this study integrated open-access synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with optical imagery to enhance the classification accuracy of mangrove forests in the Bali Denpasar–Badung region. The Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 datasets were used, and the U-Net deep learning model was employed for training and classification. A digital elevation model (DEM) from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) was applied to exclude areas higher than 10 m above sea level, thereby improving the classification accuracy. Additionally, a time-series analysis was performed to assess changes in the mangrove distribution over the past decade, revealing a consistent increase in mangrove extent in the study area. The classification performance was evaluated using a confusion matrix, demonstrating that the combined SAR-optical model outperformed single-source models across all key metrics including precision, accuracy, recall, and F1-score. The findings highlight the effectiveness of integrating SAR and optical data for capturing the complex ecological and geographical characteristics of mangrove forests. Notably, SAR imagery, which is resistant to cloud cover, shows considerable potential for independent application in tropical mangrove monitoring, warranting further research to explore its capabilities in greater depth. Nature-based solutions (NBSs) offer a promising framework for addressing urban environmental challenges while also enhancing social and economic resilience. As cities seek to achieve carbon neutrality, the integration of NBSs with renewable energy sources (RESs) presents both an opportunity and a challenge, requiring an interdisciplinary approach and an innovative planning strategy. This study aims to explore potential ways of achieving synergies between NBSs and RESs to contribute to urban resilience and climate neutrality. Focusing on the railway station district in western Thessaloniki (Greece), this research is situated within the ReGenWest project, part of the EU Cities Mission. This study develops a comprehensive, well-structured framework for integrating NBSs and RESs, drawing on principles of urban planning and energy systems to address the area’s specific spatial and ecological characteristics. Using the diverse typologies of open spaces in the district as a foundation, this research analyzes the potential for combining NBSs with RESs, such as green roofs with photovoltaic panels, solar-powered lighting, and solar parking shaders, while assessing the resulting impacts on ecosystem services. The findings reveal consistent benefits for cultural and regulatory services across all interventions, with provisioning and supporting services varying according to the specific solution applied. In addition, this study identifies larger-scale opportunities for integration, including the incorporation of NBSs and RESs into green and blue corridors and metropolitan mobility infrastructures and the development of virtual power plants to enable smart, decentralized energy management. A critical component of the proposed strategy is the implementation of an environmental monitoring system that combines hardware installation, real-time data collection and visualization, and citizen participation. Aligning NBS–RES integration with Positive Energy Districts is another aspect that is stressed in this paper, as achieving carbon neutrality demands broader systemic transformations. This approach supports iterative, adaptive planning processes that enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of NBS–RES integration in urban regeneration efforts. Full article

Fuel cells, propulsion systems, and reaction control systems (RCSs) are just a few of the space applications that depend on pressure vessels (PVs) to safely hold high-pressure fluids while enduring extreme environmental conditions both during launch and in orbit. Under these challenging circumstances, PVs must be lightweight while retaining structural integrity in order to increase the efficiency and lower the launch costs. PVs have significant challenges in space conditions, such as extreme vibrations during launch, the complete vacuum of space, and sudden temperature changes based on their location within the satellite and orbit types. Determining the operational temperature limits and endurance of PVs in space applications requires assessing the combined effects of these factors. As the main propellant for satellites and rockets, hydrogen has great promise for use in future space missions. This study aimed to assess the structural integrity and determine the thermal operating limits of different types of hydrogen pressure vessels using finite element analysis (FEA) with Ansys 2019 R3 Workbench. The impact of extreme space conditions on the performances of various kinds of hydrogen pressure vessels was analyzed numerically in this work. This study determined the safe operating temperature ranges for Type 4, Type 3, and Type 1 PVs at an operating hydrogen storage pressure of 35 MPa in an absolute vacuum. Additionally, the dynamic performance was assessed through modal and random vibration analyses. Various aspects of Ansys Workbench were explored, including the influence of the mesh element size, composite modeling methods, and their combined impact on the result accuracy. In terms of the survival temperature limits, the Type 4 PVs, which consisted of a Nylon 6 liner and a carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy (CFRE) prepreg composite shell, offered the optimal balance between the weight (56.2 kg) and a relatively narrow operating temperature range of 10–100 °C. The Type 3 PVs, which featured an Aluminum 6061-T6 liner, provided a broader operational temperature range of 0–145 °C but at a higher weight of 63.7 kg. Meanwhile, the Type 1 PVs demonstrated a superior cryogenic performance, with an operating range of −55–54 °C, though they were nearly twice as heavy as the Type 4 PVs, with a weight of 106 kg. The absolute vacuum environment had a negligible effect on the mechanical performance of all the PVs. Additionally, all the analyzed PV types maintained structural integrity and safety under launch-induced vibration loads. This study provided critical insights for selecting the most suitable pressure vessel type for space applications by considering operational temperature constraints and weight limitations, thereby ensuring an optimal mechanical–thermal performance and structural efficiency. Hybrid propulsion systems have become a focal point of low-carbon aviation research due to their advantages in energy savings, emissions reduction, and noise abatement. This study develops an integrated design methodology for hybrid propulsion systems for aircraft, incorporating multidisciplinary algorithms to establish an overall performance model. Building on this model, a comprehensive aircraft design platform was constructed, and its simulation capabilities were validated. Focusing on the mission requirements of a 180-seat narrow-body airliner, this study analyzed and compared the characteristics of three hybrid propulsion architectures, optimized their design schemes, and evaluated the key technologies for each architecture. A sensitivity analysis was conducted for critical technologies within the turboelectric architecture. The results indicate that, based on current data and future projections, a turboelectric system featuring batteries with a specific energy of 500 Wh/kg and installed motor power of 3 MW demonstrates superior performance, reduced fuel consumption, and no additional energy storage burden, making it the preferred propulsion solution. Furthermore, enhancing the utilization of aft-mounted fans and increasing the power blending coefficient can improve system performance. However, the maximum power blending coefficient is constrained to 27.25% by the specific motor power capacity. Full article

Estimation of Forest Canopy Height Using ATLAS Data Based on Improved Optics and EEMD Algorithms

The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation 2 (ICESat-2) mission uses a micropulse photon-counting lidar system for mapping, which provides technical support for capturing forest parameters and carbon stocks over large areas. However, the current algorithm is greatly affected by the slope, and the extraction of the forest canopy height in the area with steep terrain is poor. In this paper, an improved algorithm was provided to reduce the influence of topography on canopy height estimation and obtain higher accuracy of forest canopy height. First, the improved clustering algorithm based on ordering points to identify the clustering structure (OPTICS) algorithm was developed and used to remove the noisy photons, and then the photon points were divided into canopy photons and ground photons based on mean filtering and smooth filtering, and the pseudo-signal photons were removed according to the distance between the two photons. Finally, the photon points were classified and interpolated again to obtain the canopy height. The results show that the improved algorithm was more effective in estimating ground elevation and canopy height, and the result was better in areas with less noise. The root mean square error (RMSE) values of the ground elevation estimates are within the range of 1.15 m for daytime data and 0.67 m for nighttime data. The estimated RMSE values for vegetation height ranged from 3.83 m to 2.29 m. The improved algorithm can provide a good basis for forest height estimation, and its DEM and CHM accuracy improved by 36.48% and 55.93%, respectively. Full article

Considering the principles of green and low-carbon development, practitioners strive to continuously improve propeller performance as a primary goal for propeller-powered aircraft. Specially, medium and high-altitude UAVs require propellers that possess sufficient thrust and high efficiency across the entire flight envelope to improve the UAV’s endurance and mission capability. However, given the constraints imposed by flight altitude, speed, and power system capacity, attaining optimal matching of rotational speed and torque for fixed-pitch propellers across different operating scenarios remains a significant challenge. To ensure optimal aerodynamic performance across diverse design points, variable pitch technology is adopted, and a multi-objective propeller optimization design method is proposed that adapts to the varying pitch angle strategy. Based on the standard strip analysis, with different profile chord lengths and twist angle distributions of the propeller blade as the control parameters, we establish a multi-objective propeller aerodynamic shape optimization model using a genetic optimization algorithm. The newly designed electrically variable pitch propeller, employing this method, exhibits good aerodynamic performance throughout the flight envelope. Its design has been validated through high-precision CFD analysis and wind tunnel testing, achieving a cruising efficiency of up to 84.5%. The results show that the propeller performance calculation has good consistency with the test and can meet the requirements of unmanned aircraft. Full article

Exploring the Dynamic Evolution and Drivers of the Coupled Coordination Relationship of Carbon Emission Efficiency and Economic Benefits in Construction Land Development

In the pursuit of sustainable urban development, construction land development (CLD) not only carries the important mission of promoting economic growth but also needs to actively respond to the environmental requirements of reducing carbon emissions. However, there is a tension and balance between these two objectives. This study explores the evolution characteristics and influencing mechanisms of the synergistic relationship between carbon emission efficiency and economic benefits of CLD based on the undesirable slacks-based measurement, coupling coordination degree (CCD) model, Tapio decoupling model, spatial convergence model, and interpretable machine learning techniques. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The CCR between CEE and economic benefits of CLD in China shows the characteristic of “improvement-stability-local decline”, and it is higher in the eastern region than in the central and western regions. (2) The decoupling of carbon emission efficiency (CEE) and economic benefits of CLD between 2003 and 2023 shows diverse trends in different provinces and time scales in China. (3) China’s eastern region are consistent with σ-convergence and β-convergence, and the gap in the level of inter-regional coupling co-ordination has narrowed. On the contrary, the central and western regions do not pass the σ and β-convergence tests, and the regional equilibrium needs to be improved. (4) In descending order of influence on CCR, they are ownership structure, urban construction land per capita, energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product, energy structure, industrial structure, and foreign trade investment intensity. The COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network has become a reliable source of high-quality ground-based remote sensing network data that provide column-averaged dry-air mole fractions of carbon dioxide (XCO2), methane (XCH4), and carbon monoxide (XCO). The fiducial reference measurements of these gases from the COCCON complement the TCCON and NDACC-IRWG data. This study shows the application of COCCON data for the validation of existing greenhouse gas satellite products. This study includes the validation of XCH4 and XCO products from the European Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) mission, XCO2 products from the American Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) mission, and XCO2 and XCH4 products from the Japanese Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT). A total of 27 datasets contributed to this study; some of these were collected in the framework of campaign activities and covered only a short time period. In addition, several permanent stations provided long-term observations. The random uncertainties in the validation results, specifically for S5P with a lot of coincidences pairs, are found to be similar to the comparison with the TCCON. The comparison results of OCO-2 land nadir and land glint observation modes to the COCCON on a global scale, despite limited coincidences, are very promising. The stations can, therefore, expand on the coverage of the already existing ground-based reference remote sensing sites from the TCCON and the NDACC network. The COCCON data can be used for future satellite and model validation studies and carbon cycle studies. Full article
