Public transport companies are aware that the success of their operations largely depends on the proper sizing and optimization of their processes. Among the key activities are the maintenance and repair of the vehicle fleet. This paper presents the application of mathematical optimization methods from the field of operations research to improve the efficiency of service workshops for bus maintenance and repair. Based on an analysis of collected data using queueing theory, the authors assessed the current system performance and found that the queueing system still has spare capacity and could be downsized, which aligns with the company’s management goals. Specifically, the company plans to reduce the number of bus repair service stations (servers in a queueing system). The main question is whether the system will continue to function effectively after this reduction. Three specific downsizing solutions were proposed and evaluated using queueing theory methods: extending the daily operating hours of the workshops, reducing the number of arriving buses, and increasing the productivity of a service station (server). The results show that, under high system load, only those solutions that increase the productivity of individual service stations (servers) in the queueing system provide optimal outcomes. Other solutions merely result in longer queues and associated losses due to buses waiting for service, preventing them from performing their intended function and causing financial loss to the company. Parabens—specifically methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), and butylparaben (BuP)—are widely used substances in everyday life, particularly as preservatives in pharmaceutical and food products. However, these compounds are not effectively removed by conventional water and wastewater treatment processes, potentially causing disruptions to human homeostasis and the endocrine system. This study conducted a transport and dimensional analysis through simulation of the adsorption process for these parabens, using zinc chloride-activated carbon derived from spent coffee grounds (ACZnCl2) as the adsorbent, implemented via Aspen Properties® and Aspen Adsorption®. Simulations were performed for two inlet concentrations (50 mg/L and 100 mg/L) and two adsorption column heights (3 m and 4 m), considering a volumetric flow rate representative of a medium-sized city with approximately 100,000 inhabitants. The results showed that both density and surface tension of the parabens varied linearly with increasing temperature, and viscosity exhibited a marked reduction above 30 °C. Among the tested conditions, the configuration with 50 mg∙L−1 inlet concentration and a 4 m column height demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity and better performance under adsorption–desorption equilibrium. These findings indicate that the implementation of adsorption beds on an industrial scale in water and wastewater treatment systems is both environmentally and socially viable. Full article

The widespread adoption of electric buses represents a major step forward in sustainable transportation, but also brings new operational challenges, particularly in terms of improving their efficiency and controlling costs. Therefore, battery energy consumption management is a key approach for addressing these issues. Accurate prediction of energy consumption and interpretation of the influencing factors are essential for improving operational efficiency, optimizing energy use, and reducing operating costs. Although existing studies have made progress in battery energy consumption prediction, challenges remain in achieving high-precision modeling and conducting a comprehensive analysis of the influencing features. To address these gaps, this study proposes a two-layer stacking framework for estimating the energy consumption of electric buses. The first layer integrates the strengths of three nonlinear regression models—RF (Random Forest), GBDT (Gradient Boosted Decision Trees), and CatBoost (Categorical Boosting)—to enhance the modeling capacity for complex feature relationships. The second layer employs a Linear Regression model as a meta-learner to aggregate the predictions from the base models and improve the overall predictive performance. The framework is trained on 2023 operational data from two electric bus routes (NO. 355 and NO. W188) in Changsha, China, incorporating battery system parameters, driving characteristics, and environmental variables as independent variables for model training and analysis. Comparative experiments with various ensemble models demonstrate that the proposed stacking framework exhibits superior performance in data fitting. Furthermore, XGBoost (Extreme Gradient Boosting, version 2.1.4) is introduced as a surrogate model to approximate the decision logic of the stacking framework, enabling SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) analysis to quantify the contribution and marginal effects of influencing features. The proposed stacked and surrogate models achieved superior battery energy consumption prediction accuracy (lowest MSE, RMSE, and MAE), significantly outperforming benchmark models on real-world datasets. SHAP analysis quantified the overall contributions of feature categories (battery operation parameters: 56.5%; driving characteristics: 42.3%; environmental data: 1.2%), further revealing the specific contributions and nonlinear influence mechanisms of individual features. These quantitative findings offer specific guidance for optimizing battery system control and driving behavior. Full article

To address the substantial disparities in operational characteristics between social vehicles and dedicated bus lanes, as well as the sub-optimal coordination control effects, a comprehensive approach is proposed. This approach integrates social vehicle arterial coordination with bus priority control in dedicated bus lanes. Initially, an analysis of the differences in travel time distribution on both types of roads is conducted. The likelihood of buses passing through upstream and downstream intersections without stopping is also assessed. This analysis aids in determining the correlated traffic states and the corresponding signal adjustment strategies for arterial coordination. Subsequently, an incentive mechanism is established by quantitatively analyzing vehicle delay losses and bus priority benefits based on the signal adjustment strategy. Finally, a deep reinforcement learning framework is proposed to solve, in real-time, the optimal signal adjustment strategy. Simulation experiments indicate that, in comparison to the arterial coordination of social vehicles and dedicated bus arterial coordination control, this method significantly reduces the average per capita delay by 38.63% and 27.43%, respectively, under conventional traffic flow scenarios. This is in contrast to the separate arterial coordination for social vehicles and dedicated bus lanes. Furthermore, it leads to a reduction of 52.17% in the number of bus stops at intersections when compared solely with the arterial coordination of social vehicles. In saturated traffic flow scenarios, this method achieves a reduction in average per capita delay by 29.7% and 9.6%, respectively, while also decreasing the number of bus stops at intersections by 39.5% and 8.7%, respectively. This study investigates the factors influencing school trip mode choice among senior high school students in the Chiang Rai urban area, Chiang Rai, Thailand, under normal and adverse weather conditions. Utilizing data from 472 students across six extra-large urban schools, a Multinomial Logit (MNL) regression model was applied to examine the effects of socio-demographic attributes, household vehicle ownership, travel distance, and spatial variables on mode selection. The results revealed notable modal shifts during adverse weather, with motorcycle usage decreasing and private vehicle reliance increasing, while school bus usage remained stable, highlighting its role as a resilient transport option. Car ownership emerged as a strong enabler of modal flexibility, whereas students with limited access to private transport demonstrated reduced adaptability. Additionally, increased waiting and travel times during adverse conditions underscored infrastructure and service vulnerabilities, particularly for mid-distance travelers. The findings suggest an urgent need for transport policies that promote inclusive and climate-resilient mobility systems, particularly in the context of Chiang Rai, including expanded school bus services, improved first-mile connectivity, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. This study contributes to the literature by addressing environmental variability in school travel behavior and offers actionable insights for sustainable transport planning in secondary cities and border regions. Railway systems occupy a predominant role in urban transport, providing efficient, high-capacity mobility. Progress in rail transport allows fast traveling, whilst environmental concerns and CO2 emissions are on the rise. The integration of railway systems with renewable energy source (RES)-based stations presents a promising avenue to improve the sustainability, reliability, and efficiency of urban transport networks. A storage system is needed to both ensure a continuous power supply and meet train demand at the station. Batteries (BTs) offer high energy density, while supercapacitors (SCs) offer both a large number of charge and discharge cycles, and high-power density. This paper proposes a hybrid RES (photovoltaic and wind), combined with batteries and supercapacitors constituting the hybrid energy storage system (HESS). One major drawback of trains is the long charging time required in stations, so they have been fitted with SCs to allow them to charge up quickly. A new fuzzy energy management strategy (F-EMS) is proposed. This supervision strategy optimizes the power flow between renewable energy sources, HESS, and trains. DC bus voltage regulation is involved, maintaining BT and SC charging levels within acceptable ranges. The simulation results, carried out using MATLAB/Simulink, demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested fuzzy energy management strategy for various production conditions and train demand. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising sustainable urban mobility solution, expected to lead to enhanced road safety, smoother traffic flows, less traffic congestion, improved accessibility, better energy utilization and environmental performance, as well as more efficient passenger and freight transportation, in terms of time and cost, due to better fleet management and platooning. However, challenges also arise, mostly related to data privacy, security and cyber-security, high acquisition and infrastructure costs, accident liability, even possible increased traffic congestion and air pollution due to induced travel demand. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among 654 residents who experienced an autonomous bus (AB) service in the city of Trikala, Greece, in order to assess their willingness to use (WTU) and willingness to pay (WTP) for ABs, through testing a range of factors based on a literature review. Results useful to policy-makers were extracted, such as that the intention to use ABs was mostly shaped by psychological factors (e.g., users’ perceptions of usefulness and safety, and trust in the service provider), while WTU seemed to be positively affected by previous experience in using ABs. In contrast, sociodemographic factors were found to have very little effect on the intention to use ABs, while apart from personal utility, users’ perceptions of how autonomous driving will improve the overall life standards in the study area also mattered. What Determines Carbon Emissions of Multimodal Travel? Insights from Interpretable Machine Learning on Mobility Trajectory Data

Understanding the carbon emissions of multimodal travel—comprising walking, metro, bus, cycling, and ride-hailing—is essential for promoting sustainable urban mobility. However, most existing studies focus on single-mode travel, while underlying spatiotemporal and behavioral determinants remain insufficiently explored due to the lack of fine-grained data and interpretable analytical frameworks. This study proposes a novel integration of high-frequency, real-world mobility trajectory data with interpretable machine learning to systematically identify the key drivers of carbon emissions at the individual trip level. Firstly, multimodal travel chains are reconstructed using continuous GPS trajectory data collected in Beijing. Secondly, a model based on Calculate Emissions from Road Transport (COPERT) is developed to quantify trip-level CO2 emissions. Thirdly, four interpretable machine learning models based on gradient boosting—XGBoost, GBDT, LightGBM, and CatBoost—are trained using transportation and built environment features to model the relationship between CO2 emissions and a set of explanatory variables; finally, Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and partial dependence plots (PDPs) are used to interpret the model outputs, revealing key determinants and their non-linear interaction effects. The results show that transportation-related features account for 75.1% of the explained variance in emissions, with bus usage being the most influential single factor (contributing 22.6%). Built environment features explain the remaining 24.9%. The PDP analysis reveals that substantial emission reductions occur only when the shares of bus, metro, and cycling surpass threshold levels of approximately 40%, 40%, and 30%, respectively. Additionally, travel carbon emissions are minimized when trip origins and destinations are located within a 10 to 11 km radius of the central business district (CBD). This study advances the field by establishing a scalable, interpretable, and behaviorally grounded framework to assess carbon emissions from multimodal travel, providing actionable insights for low-carbon transport planning and policy design. The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) has implemented various policies to reduce car use and promote more sustainable mobility. Initiatives such as superblocks, Low Emission Zones (LEZs), and the Bicivia network aim to transform the urban model in response to environmental and congestion challenges. However, the high reliance on private vehicles for intermunicipal travel, uneven infrastructure, and social resistance to certain changes remain significant issues. This study examines the evolution of mobility patterns and assesses the effectiveness of the above policies in fostering real and sustainable change. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, which combined an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of 2011–2024 data, trend linear regression, and a comparative international analysis. The EFA identified four key structural dimensions: traditional transport infrastructure, active mobility and bus lines, public bicycles and mixed use, and transport efficiency and punctuality. The findings reveal a clear reduction in private car use and an increase in sustainable modes of transport. This indicates that there are prospects for future transformation. Nonetheless, challenges persist in intermunicipal mobility and the public acceptance of the measures. This study provides empirical and comparative evidence and emphasizes the need for integrated metropolitan governance to achieve a resilient and sustainable urban model. Full article

The adoption of predictive maintenance in public transportation has gained increasing attention in the context of Industry 4.0. However, many urban bus fleets remain in early digital transformation stages, with limited historical data and fragmented infrastructures that hinder the implementation of data-driven strategies. This study proposes a reproducible Machine Learning pipeline tailored to such data-scarce conditions, integrating domain-informed feature engineering, lightweight and interpretable models (Linear Regression, Ridge Regression, Decision Trees, KNN), SMOGN for imbalance handling, and Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation for robust evaluation. A scheduled batch retraining strategy is incorporated to adapt the model as new data becomes available. The pipeline is validated using real-world data from hybrid diesel buses, focusing on the prediction of time spent in critical soot accumulation zones of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). In Zone 4, the model continued to outperform the baseline during the production test, indicating its validity for an additional operational period. In contrast, model performance in Zone 3 deteriorated over time, triggering retraining. These results confirm the pipeline’s ability to detect performance drift and support predictive maintenance decisions under evolving operational constraints. The proposed framework offers a scalable solution for digitally emerging fleets. Full article

The rapid electrification of transportation and the proliferation of rooftop solar photovoltaics (PVs) in urban environments are reshaping the operational dynamics of power distribution networks. However, the inherent uncertainty in electric vehicle (EV) behavior—including arrival times, charging preferences, and state-of-charge—as well as spatially and temporally variable solar generation, presents a profound challenge to existing scheduling frameworks. This paper proposes a novel data-driven distributionally robust optimization (DDRO) framework for solar-powered EV charging coordination under spatiotemporal uncertainty. Leveraging empirical datasets of EV usage and solar irradiance from a smart city deployment, the framework constructs Wasserstein ambiguity sets around historical distributions, enabling worst-case-aware decision-making without requiring the assumption of probability laws. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization model. The first stage determines day-ahead charging schedules, solar utilization levels, and grid allocations across an urban-scale distribution feeder. The second stage models real-time recourse actions—such as dynamic curtailment or demand reshaping—after uncertainties are realized. Physical grid constraints are modeled using convexified LinDistFlow equations, while EV behavior is segmented into user classes with individualized uncertainty structures. The model is evaluated on a modified IEEE 123-bus feeder with 52 EV-PV nodes, using 15 min resolution over a 24 h horizon and 12 months of real-world data. Comparative results demonstrate that the proposed DDRO method reduces total operational costs by up to 15%, eliminates voltage violations entirely, and improves EV service satisfaction by more than 30% relative to deterministic and stochastic baselines. This work makes three primary contributions: it introduces a robust, tractable optimization architecture that captures spatiotemporal uncertainty using empirical Wasserstein sets; it integrates behavioral and physical modeling within a unified dispatch framework for urban energy-mobility systems; and it demonstrates the value of robust coordination in simultaneously improving grid resilience, renewable utilization, and EV user satisfaction. The results offer practical insights for city-scale planners seeking to enable the reliable and efficient electrification of mobility infrastructure under uncertainty. Full article

Electric buses are key in the strategy towards a greenhouse-gas-neutral fleet. However, their restrictions in terms of range and refueling as well as their increased price point present new challenges for public transport companies. This study aims to address, based on real-world operational data, how energy consumption and charging behavior affect battery aging and how operational strategies can be optimized to extend battery life under realistic conditions. This article presents an energy consumption analysis with respect to ambient temperatures and average vehicle speed based exclusively on real-world data of an urban bus fleet, providing a data foundation for range forecasting and infrastructure planning optimized for public transport needs. Additionally, the State of Charge (SOC) window during operation and vehicle idle time as well as the charging power were analyzed in this case study to formulate recommendations towards a more battery-friendly treatment. The central research question is whether battery-friendly operational strategies—such as reduced charging power and lower SOC windows—can realistically be implemented in daily public transport operations. The data descriptor introduces an open, high-resolution dataset of real-world bus operations in Astana, Kazakhstan, captured from GPS trajectories between July and September 2024. The data covers three high-frequency routes and have been processed into a GTFS format, enabling direct use with existing transit modeling tools. Unlike typical static GTFS feeds, this dataset provides empirically observed dwell times, run times, and travel times, offering a detailed snapshot of operational variability in urban bus systems. The dataset supports applications in machine learning–based travel time prediction, timetable optimization, and transit reliability analysis, especially in settings where live feeds are unavailable. By releasing this dataset publicly, we aim to promote transparent, data-driven transport research in emerging urban contexts. Full article

Accurately estimating the energy consumption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in real-world delivery scenarios remains a critical challenge, particularly when UAVs operate in complex urban environments and are coupled with public transportation systems. Most existing models rely on oversimplified assumptions or static mission profiles, limiting their applicability to realistic, scalable drone-based logistics. In this paper, we propose a physically-grounded and scenario-aware energy sizing methodology for UAVs operating as part of a last-mile delivery system integrated with a city’s bus network. The model incorporates detailed physical dynamics—including lift, drag, thrust, and payload variations—and considers real-time mission constraints such as delivery execution windows and infrastructure interactions. To enhance the realism of the energy estimation, we integrate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations that quantify the impact of surrounding structures and moving buses on UAV thrust efficiency. Four mission scenarios of increasing complexity are defined to evaluate the effects of delivery delays, obstacle-induced aerodynamic perturbations, and early return strategies on energy consumption. The methodology is applied to a real-world transport network in Belfort, France, using a graph-based digital twin. Results show that environmental and operational constraints can lead to up to 16% additional energy consumption compared to idealized mission models. The proposed framework provides a robust foundation for UAV battery sizing, mission planning, and sustainable integration of aerial delivery into multimodal urban transport systems. Full article

Accurate bus travel time prediction is crucial for improving travel experience, especially in transfer journeys. This study introduces a novel multi-route bus travel time prediction system-based PMLNet, a partition and combination prediction framework, addressing the gap in accurate prediction models by incorporating macro and local impact factors. The system employs a pre-processing algorithm for constructing travel chains, partitions travel time into four components, utilizes LSTM along with the newly proposed MDARNN model for predicting each component, and applies four real-time traffic impact factors to calibrate the predictions of each component. Experimental validation on four bus routes demonstrates PMLNet’s superior performance, achieving mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) as low as 2.91% and mean absolute errors (MAE) below 1.45 min, outperforming traditional models and various partitioned combination frameworks. These findings underscore PMLNet’s potential to significantly improve public transportation services by providing more accurate travel time predictions, ultimately enhancing the user experience in intelligent transportation systems.
