Many modern electric drives for cars, trucks, ships, etc., use permanent magnet synchronous motors because of their compact size. At the same time, permanent magnets are expensive, and their uncontrolled flux is a problem when it is necessary to provide a wide constant power speed range in the field weakening region. An alternative to permanent magnet motors is synchronous motors with field windings. This article presents a novel design of a traction brushless synchronous motor with a field winding and a two-phase harmonic exciter winding on the rotor and zero-sequence signal injection. The two-phase harmonic exciter winding increases the electromotive force on the field winding compared to a single-phase one and makes it possible to start the motor at any rotor position. This article discusses the advantages of the proposed design over conventional solutions. A simplified mathematical model based on the finite element method for steady state simulation is presented. The machine performance of a hysteresis current controller and a field-oriented PI current controller are compared using the model. Full article

An axial field hybrid excitation synchronous generator (AF-HESG) is proposed for an independent power supply system, and its electromagnetic performance is studied in this paper. The distinguishing feature of the proposed generator is the addition of static magnetic bridges at both ends to place the field windings and the use of a sloping surface to increase the additional air-gap cross-sectional area. The advantage of the structure is that it achieves brushless excitation and improves the flux-regulation range. The structure and magnetic circuit characteristics are introduced in detail. Theoretical analysis of the flux-regulation principle is conducted by studying the relationship between field magnetomotive force, rotor reluctance, and air-gap flux density. Quantitative calculation is performed using a magnetomotive force (MMF)-specific permeance model, and the influence of the main parameters on the air-gap flux density and flux-regulation range is analyzed. Subsequently, magnetic field, no-load, and load characteristics are investigated through three-dimensional finite element analysis. The loss distribution is analyzed, and the temperature of the generator under rated conditions is simulated. Finally, a 30 kW, 1500 r/min prototype is developed and tested. The test results show good flux-regulation capability and stable voltage output performance of the proposed generator. Full article

Hybrid-excited generators have a wide voltage regulation capability or a wide range of variable-speed constant-voltage output capability, providing a significant advantage in the new energy power generation field. To achieve the optimal design of brushless hybrid excitation synchronous generators with third harmonic excitation, it is necessary to grasp the influence of design parameters on excitation power accurately. Firstly, this paper elaborates on the structure and principle of the hybrid excitation synchronous generator. From the perspective of excitation power generation, the expression for excitation power in hybrid excitation generators has been derived, identifying the primary factors influencing excitation power, which include winding parameters, structural parameters, and magnetic circuit saturation. Secondly, qualitatively calculate the influence of the number of turns and arrangement, turns in rotor harmonic, air gap length, and thickness of the permanent magnet on the excitation power, which is verified by the electromagnetic field finite element method. The results showed that the use of full pitch and a moderate increase in turns, a decrease in air gap length, and an increase in the thickness of the permanent magnet can all increase the rotor excitation power. A brushless hybrid excitation synchronous generator prototype based on third harmonic excitation was developed, the correctness of theoretical analysis and calculation were verified by test results. There are numerous methods for detecting interturn faults (ITFs) in the field winding of synchronous machines (SMs). One effective approach is based on comparing theoretical and measured excitation currents. This method is unaffected by rotor temperature in static excitation SMs. However, this paper investigates the influence of rotor temperature in brushless synchronous machines (BSMs), where rotor temperature significantly impacts the exciter excitation current. Extensive experimental tests were conducted on a special BSM with measurable rotor temperature. Given the challenges of measuring rotor temperature in industrial machines, this paper explores the feasibility of using stator temperature in the exciter field current estimation model. The theoretical exciter field current is calculated using a deep neural network (DNN), which incorporates electrical brushless synchronous generator output values and stator temperature, and it is subsequently compared with the measured exciter field current. This method achieves an error rate below 0.5% under healthy conditions, demonstrating its potential for simple implementation in industrial BSMs for ITF detection. Full article

This article aims to realize the brushless operation of a wound rotor vernier machine (WRVM) by a third-harmonic field produced through stator auxiliary winding (X). In the conventional model, a third-harmonic current is generated by connecting a 4-pole armature and 12-pole excitation windings serially with a three-phase diode rectifier to develop a pulsating field in the airgap of a machine. However, in the proposed model, the ABC winding is supplied by a three-phase current source inverter, whereas the auxiliary winding (X) carries no current due to an open circuit. The fundamental MMF component developed in the machine airgap creates a four-pole stator field, while the third-harmonic MMF induces the harmonic current in the specialized rotor harmonic winding. The rotor on the other side contains the harmonic and the field windings connected through a full-bridge rectifier. The electromagnetic interaction of the stator and rotor fields generates torque. Due to the open-circuited winding pattern, the proposed machine results in a low torque ripple. A 2D model is designed using JMAG-Designer, and 2D field element analysis (FEA) is carried out to determine the output torque and machine’s efficiency. A comparative performance analysis of both the conventional and proposed topologies is discussed graphically. The quantitative analysis of the proposed topology shows better performance as compared to the recently developed third-harmonic-based brushless WRVM topology in terms of output torque and torque ripples. This paper offers a novel dual-mode double stator wound rotor synchronous machine for variable speed applications. The proposed motor integrates the benefits of both the traditional wound rotor synchronous machine (WRSM) and brushless wound rotor synchronous machine (BL-WRSM). A constant torque can be attained in the maximum torque per ampere region by operating the proposed machine as a traditional WRSM in Mode I, and a constant power can be attained in the field-weakening region by operating it as a BL-WRSM in Mode II. Moreover, due to the dual-stator structure, the proposed machine exhibits improved performance in terms of high torque density as compared to the existing single stator BL-WRSM. By using a special stator winding arrangement to achieve the sub-harmonic component of the stator magnetomotive force, the brushless operation of the proposed machine is achieved. The additional sub-harmonic component induces a voltage in the harmonic winding placed on the rotor, which is then rectified and provided a DC current to field winding for brushless excitation. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed machine, a two-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is carried out. Full article

Electric machines with hybrid excitation have increased torque density while maintaining a wide range of speed control. This article presents the results of the optimal design of a synchronous homopolar generator (SHG) with ferrite magnets on the rotor and excitation winding on the stator for passenger cars. The use of ferrite magnets on the rotor of a synchronous homopolar generator makes it possible to use the stator surface more efficiently, which in turn increases energy efficiency and reduces the dimensions of the generator. At the same time, the excitation winding on the stator provides a reliable brushless design and the ability to control the excitation flux. The problem of long-time calculation of the three-dimensional SHG structure, which is especially relevant when using multi-iterative computer optimization, is solved by using the computationally efficient Nelder-Mead method and a simplified SHG model using two-dimensional finite element analysis. It is also clear that the low torque ripple of SHG with ferrite magnets with two stator-rotor stack combinations (SRSC) is largely provided by the fact that the torque ripples of individual SRSCs are in antiphase. The problem of considering the magnetic properties of magnetic core sections made of structural low-carbon steel is discussed. It has been found that with an increase in both the saturation level of the magnetic circuit and the magnetomotive force (MMF) of the SHG excitation winding, resistance to irreversible demagnetization of ferrite magnets on the rotor can be increased by increasing their height. In addition, it is shown that there is a significant increase in performance when using the hybrid excitation, in comparison with the conventional SHG design without magnets. Full article

A new type of brushless reverse claw-pole electrically excited generator is proposed for the problems of the low sine degree of the induced electromotive force waveform and the high harmonic content of the output voltage of the conventional electrically excited claw-pole generator. The design uses the equivalent magnetic network method to establish the equivalent magnetic circuit model of the motor and determines the equation for calculating the magnetoresistance of the isosceles trapezoidal variable section claw-pole structure. It derives the mathematical model of the no-load induced electric potential of the generator and completes to optimize the motor parameters with the no-load induced electric potential as the target. This study shows that the brushless reverse claw-pole electrically excited generator has the advantages of uniform magnetic field distribution, high harmonic fundamental amplitude of induced electromotive force and low harmonic content. It can better meet the application requirements compared with the conventional electrically excited claw-pole generator. Full article

This paper presents a topology for the brushless operation of a wound-rotor synchronous machine based on the subharmonic excitation technique by using two sets of multi-pole windings on the armature as well as on the rotor. The armature windings consist of a four-pole three-phase main winding and a two-pole single-phase additional winding, responsible for the generation of fundamental and subharmonic components of magnetomotive force (MMF), respectively. The rotor contains four-pole field winding and two-pole excitation winding. From the generated air gap MMF, the additional winding is responsible for induction in excitation winding, which feeds DC to the field winding through a rotating rectifier without the need of brushes. Then, the interaction of the magnetic field from the main and the field windings produces torque. The proposed topology is analyzed using 2D finite element analysis (FEM). From the analysis, the generation of the subharmonic component of MMF is verified, which helps in achieving the brushless operation of the wound-rotor synchronous machine. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed brushless multi-pole topology is compared with the existing dual three-phase winding multi-pole topology in terms of current due to induction, output torque, torque ripples, and efficiency. Converters are one of the most sensible components of any power conversion system when it comes to electrical faults. Moreover, if these converters are used in a rotating system, as is the case with rotating rectifiers used in brushless synchronous machines, apart from also being exposed to mechanical effects and thus having a greater likelihood of failure, no access is available directly, causing a lack of available measurements for condition monitoring. This paper applies a model-based method to the online detection of open-diode faults, shorted-diode faults and exciter open-phase faults in the rotating rectifiers of brushless synchronous machines. The applied method relies on the comparison between the measured and the theoretical exciter field currents, the latter computed through a healthy machine model from the machine actual output values. The proposed protection strategy stands out for its computational simplicity and its non-invasiveness, which makes its industrial application straightforward without the need of any further equipment or adaptation. Its applicability has been verified through a double approach, on the one hand, through computer simulations, and, on the other hand, through experimental tests, achieving satisfactory results. The research conducted proves that with the proposed method, given reasonable measurement and model estimation typical errors of less than 5%, positive differences between the measured and the theoretical exciter field currents of more than 13%, 200% and 30% for open-diode faults, shorted-diode faults and exciter open-phase faults, respectively, are detectable with at least a 95% confidence interval. In this paper, a new hybrid excitation drive motor (HEDM) was proposed to solve the problem of an uncontrollable magnetic field of a permanent magnet motor. The rotor part of the motor was composed of a combined magnetic pole permanent magnet rotor and a brushless electric claw rotor, in which the combined magnetic pole permanent magnet rotor has a parallel magnetic circuit structure. According to the characteristics of the parallel rotor structure, the equivalent magnetic circuit model was established, and the no-load leakage flux coefficient of the claw pole rotor was calculated. The Taguchi method was used for objective optimization of the permanent magnet rotor structure. The distortion rate of no-load back electromotive force (EMF) was taken as the first optimization goal; the cogging torque and the average torque were taken as the second optimization goal; and the torque fluctuation coefficient was a constraint condition. The optimal parameter matching under the mixed horizontal matrix was obtained. The parameters of the claw pole were optimized by using the method of uniform variables, and the dimension parameters of the motor were obtained. Finite element analysis and prototype tests were carried out for the optimized motor structure. The rationality and feasibility of the new HEDM as a vehicle motor were verified, which provided a possibility for the application of the new energy vehicle drive motor field. Full article

The lack of available measurements makes the detection of electrical faults in the rotating elements of brushless synchronous machines particularly challenging. This paper presents a novel and fast detection method regarding interturn faults at the field winding of the main machine, which is characterized because it is non-intrusive and because its industrial application is straightforward as it does not require any additional equipment. The method is built upon the comparison between the theoretical and the measured exciter field currents. The theoretical exciter field current is computed from the main machine output voltage and current magnitudes for any monitored operating point by means of a theoretical healthy brushless machine model that links the main machine with the exciter. The applicability of the method has been verified for interturn faults at different fault severity levels, both through computer simulations and experimental tests, delivering promising results. A synchronous homopolar motor (SHM) has a salient pole passive rotor, an excitation winding located on the stator, and no permanent magnets, which ensures high reliability and makes this type of motor a good alternative to motors traditionally used in traction drives. However, there is no comparison between SHMs and conventional brushed synchronous machines for traction applications in the literature. In this paper, the performances of a wound rotor synchronous machine (WRSM) and SHM are theoretically compared at the operating points of a 370 kW dump mining truck drive traction curve that has a 10:1 constant power range in the field weakening region. The nine-phase motors under comparison have the same outer diameter of the stator lamination. Before comparison, both motor designs are optimized using the Nelder–Mead method to minimize the semiconductor inverter rated current and the operating cycle power loss. The main advantages of the WRSM, which was designed, are reduction in stator length, smaller losses, and smaller inverter. The reduction in the total stator length was by 1.23 times taking into account the winding end parts as well. Losses were reduced by 1.21 times for the same radius of the stator lamination. Finally, the cost of power modules of the inverter was decreased by 1.4 times. SHM is more reliable since its rotor does not have an excitation winding and a diode rectifier, as in a WRSM with a brushless exciter. In addition, SHM provides lower consumption of copper, which reduces the total mass and cost of active materials. This article also introduces a new term, “inverter utilization factor”, which can be useful, more informative than motor power factor, when comparing traction drives with different types of motors. Brushless stator-mounted traction motors, which are new and emerging, have many potential applications in the electrified transport industry. Brushless stator-mounted machines (BSSMs), with the so-called flux modulation (FM) effects, use asynchronous field harmonics to realize energy conversion by altering the basic principle for conventional machine design which requires the stator and rotor to have the same pole number. The machines show promise of meeting the challenging requirements of electric vehicle (EV) traction motors. Therefore, in this paper, a review is undertaken on the state-of-the-art and potentials of the BSSMs for EV drives. The focus on BSSMs is due to their suitability for high-speed high torque density performance, as well as possessing suitable heat dissipation and flux weakening capabilities. The study is used to first rehash and discuss the design and excitation topologies, operating principles, and some emerging trends based on the basic BSSM variants, e.g., the doubly salient machine, flux reversal machine, and flux switching machine, while also undertaking a bibliometric synthesis on relevant studies highlighting the design and performance candidature of these niche BSSMs in EV applications, especially when compared to the well-developed Prius–IPM motor. Brushless synchronous generators, which have the structure of three-stage generators to realize brushless excitation, are the most commonly used aero-generators. With the development of more electric aircraft technology, the output frequency of aero-generators is changing from constant to variable, and the characteristics of generators are also changed. To make sure that the generators can be adapted to the variable frequency operation, this paper analyzes the effects of different operating conditions on generator performance and proposes corresponding design methods. The design and verification of the electromagnetic field, fluid field, temperature field and stress field are carried out for the variable frequency generator. A prototype generator is manufactured according to the design results. An experimental platform is set up to test the performances of the designed generator. The final experimental results show that the generator can work well in variable frequency generation systems, which proves the design method proposed in this paper is effective and feasible.
