This study addresses the water basin effect in the underwater sand layer of steel pipe pile cofferdams by integrating the concept from building foundation pits to cofferdam foundation pit analysis. A theoretical derivation is presented for the deformation evolution of steel pipe piles and bottom seals within the cofferdam pit. The cofferdam construction dewatering process is divided into four stages: riverbed excavation for bottom sealing, dewatering to the second support, dewatering to the third support, and dewatering to final bottom sealing. The steel pipe piles are modeled as single-span or multi-span cantilever continuous beam structures. Using the superposition principle, deformation evolution equations for these statically indeterminate structures across the four stages are derived. The bottom seal is simplified to a single-span end-fixed beam, and its deflection curve equation under uniform load and end-fixed additional load is obtained via the same principle. A case study based on the 6# pier steel pipe pile cofferdam of Xi’an Metro Line 10 Jingwei Bridge rail-road project employs FLAC3D for hydrological–mechanical coupling analysis of the entire dewatering process to validate the water basin effect. Results reveal a unique water basin effect in cofferdam foundation pits. Consistent horizontal deformation patterns of steel pipe piles occur across all working conditions, with maximum horizontal displacement (20.72 mm) observed at 14 m below the pile top during main pier construction completion. Close agreements are found among theoretical, numerical, and monitored deformation results for both steel pipe piles and bottom seals. Proper utilization of the formed water basin effect can effectively enhance cofferdam stability. These findings offer insights for similar engineering applications. Full article

To address the inefficiencies and limited spatial resolution of traditional single-point monitoring techniques, this study proposes a multi-scale analysis method that integrates the Multi-Scale Model-to-Model Cloud Comparison (M3C2) algorithm with least-squares plane fitting. This approach employs the M3C2 algorithm for qualitative full-field deformation detection and utilizes least-squares plane fitting for quantitative feature extraction. When applied to the approach span of a cross-river bridge in Hubei Province, China, this method leverages dense point clouds (greater than 500 points per square meter) acquired using a Leica RTC360 scanner. Data preprocessing incorporates curvature-adaptive cascade denoising, achieving over 98% noise removal while retaining more than 95% of structural features, along with octree-based simplification. By extracting multi-level slice features from bridge decks and piers, this method enables the simultaneous analysis of global trends and local deformations. The results revealed significant deformation, with an average settlement of 8.2 mm in the left deck area. The bridge deck exhibited a deformation trend characterized by left and higher right in the vertical direction, while the bridge piers displayed noticeable tilting, particularly with the maximum offset of the rear pier columns reaching 182.2 mm, which exceeded the deformation of the front pier. The bridge deck’s micro-settlement error was ±1.2 mm, and the pier inclination error was ±2.8 mm, meeting the Chinese Highway Bridge Maintenance Code (JTG H11-2004) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards, and the multi-scale algorithm achieved engineering-level accuracy. Utilizing point cloud densities >500 pt/m2, the M3C2 algorithm achieved a spatial resolution of 0.5 mm, enabling sub-millimeter full-field analysis for complex scenarios. This method significantly enhances bridge safety monitoring precision, enhances the precision of intelligent systems monitoring, and supports the development of targeted systems as pile foundation reinforcement efforts and as improvements to foundations. Double-column self-centering segmentally assembled bridges (SC-SABs) present greater design complexity compared to single-column systems, primarily due to vertical stiffness discontinuities at segmental spandrel abutments, which critically affect the refinement of their seismic design methods. To address these challenges, this study conducts a systematic investigation into the mechanical behavior and seismic performance of double-column SC-SAB. First, leveraging fundamental mechanical principles and stress-strain relationships, the coupling mechanism between the two columns is analytically established. An analytical expression for the elastic stiffness of a double-column SC-SAB, when simplified to an equivalent single-column system, is derived. This establishes the equivalent stiffness conditions for reducing a double-column system to a single-column model, and the overall equivalent stiffness of the double-column system is formulated. To validate the theoretical framework, a finite element model of the double-column SC-SAB is developed using OpenSees (1.0.0.1 version). An equivalent single-column model is constructed based on the derived stiffness equivalence conditions. By comparing the peak displacement and bearing capacity between the double-column and equivalent single-column models, the accuracy and feasibility of the simplification approach are confirmed. The numerical results further validate the derived overall equivalent stiffness, providing a robust theoretical foundation for simplified engineering applications. Additionally, pushover analysis and hysteretic response analysis are performed to systematically evaluate the influence of key design parameters on the seismic performance of double-column SC-SAB. The results demonstrate that the prestressed twin-column system exhibits excellent self-centering capability, effectively controlling residual displacements, aligning with seismic resilience goals. This research advances the seismic design methodology for SC-SAB by resolving critical challenges in stiffness equivalence and joint behavior quantification. The findings of this study can be utilized to derive equivalent damping ratios and equivalent periods. Based on the displacement response spectrum, the pier-top displacement and maximum force can be determined, thereby enabling a displacement-based seismic design approach. This research holds significant theoretical and practical value for advancing seismic design methodologies for self-centering segmental bridge piers and enhancing the seismic safety of bridge structures. Local scour around bridge piers poses significant challenges to the stability and safety of bridge structures. Local scour results from the combined effects of increased longitudinal flow velocity, the direct impact of the flow in front of the pier, and the suction effect of horseshoe vortices. This study utilizes a three-dimensional mathematical model to simulate the flow field around the pier, employing the SWASH (simulating waves till shore) model. Experimental observations in a bed load flume were conducted to analyze the contribution of different factors to local scour. The results indicate that the scour depth caused predominantly by the flow accounts for approximately 75–80% of the total scour depth. Analysis of the longitudinal flow velocity distribution suggests that the scour depth due to the redistribution of longitudinal flow velocity generally accounts for 15–30% of the total scour depth. These findings provide insights into the local scour mechanism and have implications for the design and maintenance of bridge foundations. Full article

This study investigates the application of machine learning (ML) algorithms for seismic damage classification of bridges supported by helical pile foundations in cohesive soils. While ML techniques have shown strong potential in seismic risk modeling, most prior research has focused on regression tasks or damage classification of overall bridge systems. The unique seismic behavior of foundation elements, particularly helical piles, remains unexplored. In this study, numerical data derived from finite element simulations are used to classify damage states for three key metrics: piers’ drift, piles’ ductility factor, and piles’ settlement ratio. Several ML algorithms, including CatBoost, LightGBM, Random Forest, and traditional classifiers, are evaluated under original, oversampled, and undersampled datasets. Results show that CatBoost and LightGBM outperform other methods in accuracy and robustness, particularly under imbalanced data conditions. Oversampling improves classification for specific targets but introduces overfitting risks in others, while undersampling generally degrades model performance. This work addresses a significant gap in bridge risk assessment by combining advanced ML methods with a specialized foundation type, contributing to improved post-earthquake damage evaluation and infrastructure resilience. To address the seismic vulnerability of high-speed railway bridges (HSRBs) in seismically active regions, this study proposes a hierarchical curved steel damper (CSD) designed to mitigate excessive girder displacements induced by conventional isolation devices. The CSD integrates U-shaped and hollow diamond-shaped steel plates to achieve stable energy dissipation through coupled bending deformation. A finite element model is developed, and its hysteretic behavior is confirmed, with an energy dissipation coefficient of 1.82 and an equivalent damping ratio of 12.7%. An integrated high-speed railway track–bridge-CSD spatial coupling model is developed in OpenSees, which incorporates nonlinear springs for interlayer track interactions. Nonlinear time–history analyses under 40 spectrum-matched ground motions reveal that the CSD reduces transverse girder displacements by 73.7–79.2% and attenuates track slab acceleration peaks by 52.4% compared with uncontrolled cases. However, it increases the maximum bending moment at pier bases by up to 18.3%, necessitating supplemental energy-dissipating components for balanced force redistribution. This work provides a theoretical foundation and practical methodology for seismic response control and retrofitting of the HSRB in high-intensity seismic regions. Full article

The construction of highway bridges using continuous precast prestressed concrete girders provides an economical solution by minimizing formwork requirements and accelerating construction. Different ways can be used to integrate bridge continuity and enable the development of negative bending moments at piers. Continuous bridge connections enhance structural integrity by reducing deflections and distributing loads more efficiently. Research has led to the development of various continuity details, categorized into partial and full integration, to improve performance under diverse loading conditions. This review summarizes studies on both partial and fully integrated continuous bridges, highlighting improvements in connection resilience and the incorporation of advanced construction technologies. While extended deck reinforcement presents an economical solution for partial continuity, it has limitations, especially in longer spans. However, full integration provides additional benefits, such as further reduced deflections and bending moments, contributing to improved overall structural performance. Positive-moment connections using bent bars have shown enhanced performance in achieving continuity, though skewed bridge configurations may reduce the effectiveness of continuity. Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) has been identified as a superior material for joint connections, providing greater load capacity, durability, and seismic resistance. Additionally, mechanical splices, such as threaded rod systems, have proven effective in achieving continuity across various load types. The seismic performance of precast prestressed concrete girders relies on robust joint connections, particularly at column–foundation and column–cap points, where reinforcements such as steel plates, fiber-reinforced shells, and unbonded post-tensioning are important for shear and compression transfer. This study explores the transverse response of bridge piers in riverbeds under a multi-hazard scenario, involving seismic actions and scoured foundations. The combined impact of scour on foundations’ stability and on the dynamic stiffness of soil–foundation systems makes bridges more susceptible to earthquake damage. While previous research has extensively investigated this issue for bridges founded on piles, this work addresses the less explored but critical scenario of bridges on shallow foundations, typical of existing bridges. A comprehensive soil–foundation structure model is developed to be representative of the transverse response of multi-span and continuous girder bridges, and the effects of different scour scenarios and foundation embedment on the dynamic stiffness of the soil–foundation sub-systems are investigated through refined finite element models. Then, a parametric investigation is conducted to assess the effects of scour on the dynamic properties of the systems and, for some representative bridge prototypes, the seismic response at scoured and non-scoured conditions are compared considering real earthquakes. The research results demonstrate the significance of scour effects on the dynamic properties of the soil–foundation structure system and on the displacement demand of the bridge decks. Full article

To address the challenge of repairing the damage to concrete box girder bridge piers on mountainous highways caused by falling rocks, this paper proposes an active underpinning technique that integrates a “井”-shaped cap system, graded preloading of the foundation, and synchronized beam body correction. The technique utilizes lateral beam preloading (to eliminate the inelastic deformation of the new pile foundation) and longitudinal beam connections (to form overall stiffness). The method involves building temporary and permanent support systems in stages. Through the two-stage temporary support system transition, the removal and in situ reconstruction of the old piers, a smooth transition from the pier–beam consolidation system to the basin-type bearing system is achieved while simultaneously performing precise correction of beam torsion. The structural safety during the construction process was verified through finite element simulations and dynamic monitoring. Monitoring results show that the beam torsion recovery effect is significant (maximum lift of 5.2 mm/settlement of 7.9 mm), and the pier strain (−54.5~−51.3 με) remains within a controllable range. Before the bridge was opened to traffic, vehicle load and impact load tests were conducted. The actual measured strength and vertical stiffness of the main beam structure meet the design requirements, with relative residual deformation less than 20%, indicating that the structure is in good, elastic working condition. The vehicle running and braking dynamic coefficients (μ = 0.058~0.171 and 0.103~0.163) are both lower than the theoretical value of 0.305. The study shows that this technique enables the rapid and safe repair of bridge piers and provides important references for similar engineering projects. Full article

With the continuous increase in bridge lifespans, the rapid check and evaluation of the vertical bearing capacity for the pile foundations of existing bridges have been in greater demand. The usual practice is to carry out compression bearing tests under static loads in order to obtain the accurate ratio of the dynamic to static stiffness. However, it is difficult and costly to conduct in situ experiments for each pile foundation. Herein, a rapid evaluation method to measure the vertical bearing capacity of bridge pile foundations is proposed. Firstly, a 3D-bearing cap–pile group–soil interaction model was established to simulate a bearing test of a pile foundation that was subject to static loads and dynamic loads, and then the numerical results were validated by in situ dynamic and static loading tests on an abandoned bridge pier with the same pile group foundation; the dataset for machine learning was constructed using the numerical results, and finally, the bearing capacity of the pile foundation could be predicted rapidly. The results show the following outcomes: the established numerical model can effectively simulate dynamic and static loading tests of pile foundations; the intelligent prediction model based on machine learning can predict the ratio of static stiffness to dynamic stiffness and can thus rapidly evaluate the vertical residual bearing capacity and the designed ultimate loading capacity, allowing for the nondestructive testing and evaluation of the pile foundations of existing bridges. As a critical component of lifeline engineering, bridges play a vital role in post-earthquake rescue and disaster relief efforts. The rapid repair of earthquake-damaged piers is essential to ensure the uninterrupted functionality of lifeline systems. This paper presents a novel method for the rapid repair of earthquake-damaged pier columns using steel sleeves, based on a multi-level fortification approach, integrating numerical simulation, structural design, and experimental research. In alignment with the multi-level fortification requirements, the structural form of the outer steel sleeves was designed, key influencing factors were analyzed, and a design scheme for the outer steel sleeve was proposed. Furthermore, a quasi-static test was conducted to evaluate the seismic performance of the pier columns before and after repair. The results indicate that the maximum horizontal load the pier can withstand after repair is approximately 40% higher than that before the damage. When the pier’s bearing capacity reaches its maximum value, the horizontal displacement increases from 29.15 mm to 95.65 mm, indicating a significant improvement in the seismic performance of the repaired pier. Failure initiates with the buckling of the brace, followed by the buckling of the steel sleeves, demonstrating a multi-stage failure mode. This mode satisfies the requirements of multi-level fortification, with enhanced ductility achieved while maintaining the pier column’s bearing capacity, thereby enhancing the protection of the foundation. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is a recently emerged material with exceptional durability and ductility. While widely used in bridge retrofitting, particularly to replace expansion joints and deck overlays, UHPC has seen limited use in jacketing piers for the improvement of lateral load resistance. It presents superior mechanical properties and deformation resilience, enabled by the distributed fibers and the dense microstructure, providing corrosion resistance and a maintenance-free service life. The significant tensile strength and ductility establish UHPC as an attractive resilient jacketing system for structural members. The experimental literature documents the effectiveness of this solution in enhancing the strength and ductility of the retrofitted member, whereas premature modes of failure (i.e., lap splices and shear failure in lightly reinforced piers) are moderated. A comprehensive database of tests on UHPC-jacketed piers under lateral loads was compiled for the development of practical guidelines. Various UHPC jacket configurations were evaluated, and detailed procedures were developed for their implementation in bridge pier retrofitting. These procedures include constitutive models for UHPC, confined concrete, and the strengthening of lap splices, flexure, and shear resistance. The results are supported by the database, providing a solid foundation for the broader application of UHPC in improving the lateral load resistance of bridge piers. Full article

When combined with eccentric loading from heavy vehicles, these factors collectively can significantly increase the risk of bridge overturning. To address this risk, a comprehensive analysis of the bridge overturning mechanism was conducted. Considering the current limitations of health monitoring in bearing reaction force (BRF) measurement and risk mitigation, an adjustable intelligent bearing based on pressure sensing and self-locking principles was developed. Its mechanical performance was analyzed under the most unfavorable load conditions. To further validate the approach, a specific experimental bridge was used as a case study. The effectiveness of the force measurement and height adjustment functions was evaluated through moving load experiments. The results showed that the force measurement function accurately captured dynamic BRF changes within a precision range of ±0.1% FS and demonstrated high sensitivity to instantaneous impact effects. The height adjustment function achieved a reaction force change of up to 40 kN within the maximum adjustment range of 1.2 mm, significantly improving the load distribution of the bridge. These findings validated the reliability of the proposed intelligent bearing in real-time monitoring and proactive risk adjustment. This effectively overcomes the limitations of existing bearings, which only perform passive monitoring. Overall, it achieves the real-time monitoring of BRF and proactive control of bridge overturning risks. Full article

Currently, there are two primary issues with CFD simulations of local scour around bridge foundations using the RANS method. Firstly, the self-sustaining characteristics of turbulent boundary conditions at the inlet require special attention. Secondly, the simulated location of the maximum scour depth does not align with experimental observations. This paper employs the RANS method to model the hydrodynamic characteristics surrounding bridge piers. The sediment transport model and sediment-sliding model, considering any slope of the riverbed, were adopted to simulate the spatiotemporal evolution of local scour around the bridge foundation. Building on traditional methods and assuming local turbulence equilibrium, a self-sustaining model is theoretically derived. This model swiftly develops a balanced turbulent boundary layer, achieving a horizontally uniform flow field and effectively maintaining consistency between the inlet-given turbulent profile and physical reality. Additionally, by incorporating the velocity component of the downward-flow in front of the pier and the average shear stress around the pier into the excess shear stress model, the refined wall shear stress model accurately estimates the scouring contributions of the downward-flow and the horseshoe vortex system in this region. The numerical results including the maximum scour depth, location, and scour pit shape are consistent with experimental findings. The findings demonstrate that the numerical approach proposed in this study effectively addresses the issue of inadequate estimation of turbulent characteristics in scour pit at the leading edge of bridge piers using the RANS method. This method offers novel insights and approaches for addressing local scour issues in bridges and offshore wind turbines, as well as vortex-induced vibration issues in submarine pipelines. The impact of an ice-covered environment on the local flow characteristics of a bridge pier was studied through a series of flume tests, and the dominant factors affecting the scour pattern were found to grasp the change laws of the local hydrodynamic characteristics of the bridge pier under the ice cover. At the same time, because the scour problem of the pier foundation is a technical problem throughout the life-cycle of the bridge, to determine the optimal anti-scour protection effect on the foundation of the bridge pier, active protection scour plate was used to carry out scour protection tests, and its structural shape was optimized to obtain better anti-scour performance. The test results show that the jumping movements of sediment particles in the scour hole around the pier are mainly caused by events Q2 and Q4, which are accompanied by events Q1 and Q3 and cause the particle rolling phenomenon, where Q1 and Q3 events are outward and inward interacting flow regimes, and Q2 and Q4 events are jet and sweeping flow regimes, respectively. The power spectral attenuation rate in front of the upstream pier is high without masking effects, while strong circulation at the remaining locations results in strong vorticity and high spectral density, in particular, when the sampling time series is 60 s (i.e., f = 1/60), the variance loss rates under ice-covered conditions at the front of the upstream pier, between the two piers, and at the tail end of the downstream pier are 0.5%, 4.6%, and 9.8%, respectively, suggesting a smaller contribution of ice cover to the variance loss.
