Research highlights a growing demand for active, experiential learning methods in higher education, especially in teacher education. While the benefits of parental involvement (PI) are well-documented, Hungary lacks tools to effectively prepare teacher trainees for fostering family–school cooperation. This study addresses this gap by introducing a custom-designed board game as an innovative teaching tool. The game simulates real-world challenges in PI through a cooperative, scenario-based framework. Exercises are grounded in international and national research, ensuring their relevance and evidence-based design. Tested with 110 students, the game’s educational value was assessed via post-gameplay questionnaires. Participants emphasized the strengths of its cooperative structure, realistic scenarios, and integration of humor. Many reported gaining new insights into parental roles and strategies for effective home–school partnerships. Practical applications include integrating the game into teacher education curricula and adapting it for other educational contexts. This study demonstrates how board games can bridge theory and practice, offering an engaging, effective medium to prepare future teachers for the challenges of PI. Full article

This study investigates the influence of corporate governance on reducing financial statement fraud (FSF) in Jordanian service and industrial companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange from 2018 to 2022. To achieve this, the study employed the Beneish M-score model to assess the likelihood of FSF and logistic regression to examine the influence of corporate governance structure on fraud mitigation. The study identified 13 independent variables, including board size, board director’s independence, board director’s compensation, non-duality of CEO and chairman positions, board diversity, audit committee size, audit committee accounting background, number of annual audit committee meetings, external audit fees, board family business, the presence of women on the board of directors, firm size, and market listing on FSF. The study included 74 companies from both sectors—33 from the industrial sector and 41 from the service sector. Primary data was collected from financial statements and other information published in annual reports between 2018 and 2022. The results of the study revealed a total of 295 cases of fraud during the examined period. Out of the 59 companies analyzed, 21.4% demonstrated a low probability of fraud, while the remaining 78.6% (232 observations) showed a high probability of fraud. The results indicate that the following corporate governance factors significantly impact the mitigation of financial statement fraud (FSF): independent board directors, board diversity, audit committee accounting backgrounds, the number of audit committee meetings, family business involvement on the board, and firm characteristics. The study provides several recommendations, highlighting the importance for companies to diversify their boards of directors by incorporating different perspectives and experiences. Full article

Counteracting the Harms of Microplastics on Humans: An Overview from the Perspective of Exposure

Microplastics are pervasive environmental pollutants that pose risks to human health through ingestion and inhalation. This review synthesizes current practices to reduce exposure and toxicity by examining major exposure routes and dietary interventions. More than 130 papers were analyzed to achieve this aim. The findings show that microplastics contaminate a wide range of food products, with particular concern over seafood, drinking water, plastic-packaged foods, paper cups, and tea filter bags. Inhalation exposure is mainly linked to indoor air quality and smoking, while dermal contact poses minimal risk, though the release of additives from plastics onto the skin remains an area of concern. Recommended strategies to reduce dietary exposure include consuming only muscle parts of seafood, moderating intake of high-risk items like anchovies and mollusks, limiting canned seafood liquids, and purging mussels in clean water before consumption. Avoiding plastic containers, especially for hot food or microwaving, using wooden cutting boards, paper tea bags, and opting for tap or filtered water over bottled water are also advised. To mitigate inhalation exposure, the use of air filters with HyperHEPA systems, improved ventilation, regular vacuuming, and the reduction of smoking are recommended. While antioxidant supplementation shows potential in reducing microplastic toxicity, further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness. This review provides practical, evidence-based recommendations for minimizing daily microplastic exposure. Full article

This paper presents a novel harmonic-selective clocking scheme that facilitates concurrent downconversion of spectrally distant radio frequency (RF) signals using a single low-frequency local oscillator (LO) in an N-path receiver architecture. The proposed scheme selectively generates LO harmonics aligned with multiple RF bands, enabling simultaneous downconversion without modification of the passive mixer topology. The receiver employs a 4-path passive mixer configuration to enhance harmonic selectivity and provide flexible frequency planning.The architecture is implemented on a printed circuit board (PCB) and validated through comprehensive simulation and experimental measurements under continuous wave and modulated signal conditions. Measured results demonstrate a sensitivity of 55dBm and a conversion gain varying from 2.5dB to 9dB depending on the selected harmonic pair. The receiver’s performance is further corroborated by concurrent (dual band) reception of real-world signals, including a GPS signal centered at 1575 MHz and an LTE signal at 1179 MHz, both downconverted using a single 393 MHz LO. Signal fidelity is assessed via Normalized Mean Square Error (NMSE) and Error Vector Magnitude (EVM), confirming the proposed architecture’s effectiveness in maintaining high-quality signal reception under concurrent multiband operation. The results highlight the potential of harmonic-selective clocking to simplify multiband receiver design for wireless communication and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) applications. The accuracy of classification and localization of plants on images obtained from the board of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is of great importance when implementing precision farming technologies. It allows for the effective application of variable rate technologies, which not only saves chemicals but also reduces the environmental load on cultivated fields. Machine learning algorithms are widely used for plant classification. Research on the application of the YOLO algorithm is conducted for simultaneous identification, localization, and classification of plants. However, the quality of the algorithm significantly depends on the training set. The aim of this study is not only the detection of a cultivated plant (soybean) but also weeds growing in the field. The dataset developed in the course of the research allows for solving this issue by detecting not only soybean but also seven weed species common in the fields of Kazakhstan. The article describes an approach to the preparation of a training set of images for soybean fields using preliminary thresholding and bound box (Bbox) segmentation of marked images, which allows for improving the quality of plant classification and localization. The conducted research and computational experiments determined that Bbox segmentation shows the best results. The quality of classification and localization with the application of Bbox segmentation significantly increased (f1 score increased from 0.64 to 0.959, mAP50 from 0.72 to 0.979); for a cultivated plant (soybean), the best classification results known to date were achieved with the application of YOLOv8x on images obtained from the UAV, with an f1 score = 0.984. At the same time, the plant detection rate increased by 13 times compared to the model proposed earlier in the literature. Full article

This study explores how corporate governance reforms can enhance financial reporting quality and organizational transparency, focusing on Greece’s transition from Law 3016/2002 to Law 4706/2020. The legislative reform aimed to modernize governance structures, align national practices with international standards, and strengthen investor protection in a post-crisis economic environment. Moving beyond a simple legal comparison, the study examines how Law 3016/2002’s formal compliance model contrasts with Law 4706/2020’s more substantive accountability framework. We hypothesize that Law 4706/2020 introduces substantively stronger governance mechanisms than its predecessor, thereby improving transparency and investor protection, while compliance with the new law imposes materially greater administrative and financial burdens, especially on small- and mid-cap firms. Methodologically, the research employs a narrative literature review and a structured comparative legal analysis to assess the administrative and financial implications of the new law for publicly listed companies, focusing on board composition and diversity, internal controls, suitability policies, and disclosure requirements. Drawing on prior comparative evidence, we posit that Law 4706/2020 will foster governance and disclosure improvements, enhanced oversight, and clearer board roles. However, these measures also impose compliance burdens. Due to the heterogeneity of listed companies and the lack of firm-level data following Law 4706/2020’s implementation, the findings are neither fully generalizable nor quantifiable; future quantitative research using event studies or panel data is required to validate the hypotheses. We conclude that Greece’s new framework is a critical step toward sustainable corporate governance and more transparent financial reporting, offering regulators, practitioners, and scholars examining legal reform’s impact on governance effectiveness and financial reporting integrity. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent disorder linked to metabolic complications such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. By fragmenting normal sleep architecture, OSA perturbs the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor (GH/IGF) axis and alters circulating levels of IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs). A prior clinical observation of elevated IGFBP4 in OSA patients motivated the present investigation in a controlled animal model. Building on the previously reported protocol, OSA was induced in male C57BL/6 mice (9–12 weeks old) through intralingual injection of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), producing tongue hypertrophy, intermittent airway obstruction, and hypoxemia. After 8–10 weeks, the study assessed (1) hypoxia biomarkers—including HIF-1α and VEGF expression—and (2) neurobehavioral outcomes in anxiety and cognition using the open-field and novel object recognition tests. PTFE-treated mice exhibited a significant increase in circulating IGFBP4 versus both baseline and control groups. Hepatic Igfbp4 mRNA was also upregulated. Behaviorally, PTFE mice displayed heightened anxiety-like behavior and impaired novel object recognition, paralleling cognitive deficits reported in human OSA. These findings validate the PTFE-induced model as a tool for studying OSA-related hypoxia and neurocognitive dysfunction, and they underscore IGFBP4 as a promising biomarker and potential mediator of OSA’s systemic effects. Several chronic inflammatory processes are currently being studied in relation to other systems to better understand the regulation mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic targets. A significant body of evidence supports the role of the nervous system in regulating various immunological processes. This study investigates the relationship between pterygia and the sympathetic nervous system, focusing on their interaction in the inflammatory response and fibrogenic process. Sixteen surgical specimens of primary pterygia and four conjunctival tissue samples were examined, and their morphology was analyzed using hematoxylin–eosin and Masson’s trichrome stains. The gene expression of adrenergic receptors, as well as inflammatory and fibrogenic cytokines, was also assessed. Additionally, both adrenergic receptors and tyrosine hydroxylase were found to be localized within the tissues according to immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques. Increased expression of proinflammatory, fibrogenic, and adrenergic genes was observed in the pterygium compared to the healthy conjunctiva. Adrenergic receptors and tyrosine hydroxylase were localized in the basal region of the epithelium and within blood vessels, closely associated with immune cells. Neuroimmunomodulation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of pterygia by activating the sympathetic nervous system. At the intravascular level, norepinephrine promotes the migration of immune cells, thereby sustaining inflammation. Additionally, sympathetic nerve fibers located at the subepithelial level contribute to epithelial growth and the fibrosis associated with pterygia. Full article

An important element in the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China is the guarantee of gender equality in all fields. The principle is not reflected in terms of corporate governance and senior management, however. A study of the largest 400 companies listed on Chinese stock exchanges shows far fewer female board members and senior managers than male counterparts and only a small improvement over the course of a decade. A comparison of gender balances in terms of a range of variables, including stock exchange listing, industry type, and ownership type, reveals better balances in wholly privately owned firms than in those with controlling state interests. Subject to intervening government policies to promote state-owned enterprises over private sector counterparts, the pattern over the decade studied suggests there is a possibility privately owned enterprises may gradually displace state-owned companies in the largest 400 group and gender balances in senior roles in the largest 400 group will consequently improve. This study presents the design, fabrication, and clinical validation of a lightweight, body-powered prosthetic index finger actuated via metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint motion. The proposed system incorporates an underactuated, cable-driven mechanism combining rigid and compliant elements to achieve passive adaptability and embodied intelligence, supporting intuitive user interaction. Results indicate that the prosthesis successfully mimics natural finger flexion and adapts effectively to a variety of grasping tasks with minimal effort. This study was conducted in accordance with ethical standards and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Project No. 670161, titled “Biologically-Inspired Synthetic Finger: Design, Fabrication, and Application.” The findings suggest that the device offers a viable and practical solution for individuals with partial hand loss, particularly in settings where electrically powered systems are unsuitable or inaccessible. Green innovation is a key driver of sustainable development, yet Chinese firms, as major innovators, still underperform in this area. While directors play a central role in corporate governance, the influence of their green backgrounds on green innovation remains underexplored. This study investigates how directors with green backgrounds impact corporate green innovation. We consider both the appointment and the power of green-background directors. At the same time, we use the manually collected data from China’s heavily polluting listed firms between 2014 and 2020. We also conduct regulatory effect and mediation effect analyses. We found the following: (1) Green-background directors significantly promote corporate green innovation. Appointing directors with environmental expertise enhances firms’ green innovation performance, and this positive effect strengthens as these directors’ power increases. (2) Mechanistically, green-background directors facilitate green innovation by raising firms’ environmental awareness and helping secure government environmental subsidies. (3) Contextual influences matter. Moderating effect tests reveal that the impact of green-background directors is strengthened in firms with diligent boards, firm size, and green investors, but weakened in regions with higher marketization levels. (4) Further analysis shows that green-background directors enhance both strategic and substantive green innovation while also ensuring the long-term continuity of green innovation efforts. Surgery remains a healthcare intervention with significant risks for patients. Novel technologies can now enhance the peri-operative workflow, with artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) to assist with pre-operative planning. This review focuses on innovation in AI, XR and imaging for hepato-biliary surgery planning. The clinical challenges in hepato-biliary surgery arise from heterogeneity of clinical presentations, the need for multiple imaging modalities and highly variable local anatomy. AI-based models have been developed for risk prediction and multi-disciplinary tumor (MDT) board meetings. The future could involve an on-demand and highly accurate AI-powered decision tool for hepato-biliary surgery, assisting the surgeon to make the most informed decision on the treatment plan, conferring the best possible outcome for individual patients. Advances in AI can also be used to automate image interpretation and 3D modelling, enabling fast and accurate 3D reconstructions of patient anatomy. Surgical navigation systems utilizing XR are already in development, showing an early signal towards improved patient outcomes when used for hepato-biliary surgery. Live visualization of hepato-biliary anatomy in the operating theatre is likely to improve operative safety and performance. The technological advances in AI and XR provide new applications in pre-operative planning with potential for patient benefit. Their use in surgical simulation could accelerate learning curves for surgeons in training. Future research must focus on standardization of AI and XR study reporting, robust databases that are ethically and data protection-compliant, and development of inter-disciplinary tools for various healthcare applications and systems. Decarbonizing Agricultural Buildings: A Life-Cycle Carbon Emissions Assessment of Dairy Barns

The life-cycle carbon emissions (LCCE) assessment of dairy barns is crucial for identifying low-carbon transition pathways and promoting the sustainable development of the dairy industry. We applied a life cycle assessment approach integrated with building information modeling and EnergyPlus to establish a full life cycle inventory of the material quantities and energy consumption for dairy barns. The LCCE was quantified from the production to end-of-life stages using the carbon equivalent of dairy barns (CEDB) as the functional unit, expressed in kg CO2e head−1 year−1. A carbon emission assessment model was developed based on the “building–process–energy” framework. The LCCE of the open barn and the lower profile cross-ventilated (LPCV) barn were 152 kg CO2e head−1 year−1 and 229 kg CO2e head−1 year−1, respectively. Operational carbon emissions (OCE) accounted for the largest share of LCCE, contributing 57% and 74%, respectively. For embodied carbon emissions (ECE), the production of building materials dominated, representing 91% and 87% of the ECE, respectively. Regarding carbon mitigation strategies, the use of extruded polystyrene boards reduced carbon emissions by 45.67% compared with stone wool boards and by 36% compared with polyurethane boards. Employing a manure pit emptying system reduced carbon emissions by 76% and 74% compared to manure scraping systems. Additionally, the adoption of clean electricity resulted in a 33% reduction in OCE, leading to an overall LCCE reduction of 22% for the open barn and 26% for the LPCV barn. This study introduces the CEDB to evaluate low-carbon design strategies for dairy barns, integrating building layout, ventilation systems, and energy sources in a unified assessment approach, providing valuable insights for the low-carbon transition of agricultural buildings. Underwater propulsion systems are the fundamental functional modules of underwater robotics and are crucial in intricate underwater operational scenarios. This paper proposes a biomimetic underwater robot propulsion scheme that is motivated by the hindlimb movements of the bullfrog. A multi-linkage mechanism was developed to replicate the “kicking-and-retracting” motion of the bullfrog by employing motion capture systems to acquire biological data on their hindlimb movements. The FDM 3D printing and PC board engraving techniques were employed to construct the experimental prototype. The prototype’s biomimetic and motion characteristics were validated through motion capture experiments and comparisons with a real bullfrog. The biomimetic bullfrog hindlimb propulsion system was tested with six-degree-of-freedom force experiments to evaluate its propulsion capabilities. The system achieved an average thrust of 2.65 N. The effectiveness of motor drive parameter optimization was validated by voltage comparison experiments, which demonstrated a nonlinear increase in thrust as voltage increased. This design approach, which transforms biological kinematic characteristics into mechanical drive parameters, exhibits excellent feasibility and efficacy, offering a novel solution and quantitative reference for underwater robot design.
