Blade tip leakage vortex (TLV) is a critical phenomenon in hydraulic machinery, which can significantly affect the internal flow characteristics and deteriorate the hydraulic performance. In this paper, the blade tip leakage flow and TLV characteristics in a novel dishwasher pump were investigated. The correlation between the vorticity distribution in various directions and the leakage vortices was established within a rotating coordinate system. The results show that the TLV in a composite impeller can be categorized into initial and secondary leakage vortices. The initial leakage vortex originates from the evolution of two corner vortices that initially form at different locations within the blade tip clearance. This vortex induces pressure fluctuations at the impeller inlet; its shedding is identified as the primary contributor to localized energy loss within the flow passage. These findings provide insights into TLVs in complex pump geometries and provide solutions for future pump optimization strategies. Full article

This paper presents a CFD-based method for the aerodynamic design of a high-pressure compressor rotor blisk, taking into account manufacturing constraints. Focus is placed on the influence of geometric deviations caused by the dynamic constraints of the milling machine. Special attention is given to the leading edge region of the blade, where high curvature results in increased sensitivity in both aerodynamic behavior and manufacturability. The generic blisk geometry on which this study is based is characterized by an elliptical leading edge. For the optimization, the leading edge is described by Bézier curves that transition smoothly to the suction and pressure sides with continuous curvature and a non-dimensional length ratio. In steady-state RANS parameter studies, the length ratio is systematically varied while the chord length is kept constant. For the aerodynamic evaluation of the design’s key performance parameters such as blade pressure distribution, total pressure loss and compressor efficiency are considered. To evaluate the machine dynamics for a given design, compliance with the nominal feed rate and the deviation between the planned and actual tool tip positions were used as evaluation parameters. Compared to the reference geometry with an elliptical leading edge, the purely aerodynamic optimization achieved an isentropic efficiency improvement of +0.24 percentage points in the aerodynamic design point and a profile deviation improvement of 3 µm in the 99th quantile. The interdisciplinary optimization achieved an improvement of +0.20 percentage points and 30 µm, respectively. This comparative study illustrates the potential of multidisciplinary design approaches that balance aerodynamic performance goals with manufacturability via a novel approach for Design-to-Manufacture-to-Design. Wind turbine blades are prone to icing in cold environments, which leads to decreased aerodynamic performance, increased power loss, and even endangers the safe and stable operation of wind turbines. Electric heating anti-deicing method is the most effective solution because of its flexible control, rapid response, and high deicing efficiency. However, in the process of blade high-speed rotation, the complex flow field effect significantly affects the blade heat transfer performance, which leads to the problems of high energy consumption, low heat utilization, and uneven heating of traditional electric heating anti-icing/deicing methods, limiting their application effect in complex working conditions. Based on the physical mechanism and heat exchange characteristics of electric heating deicing of wind turbine blades, a coupled flow–heat transfer numerical model suitable for complex flow field conditions was constructed in this study, aiming to realize the dynamic simulation of the global temperature field and the phase transition process of ice sheets under different heating modes. Furthermore, the deicing efficiency characteristics of continuous heating and cyclic heating modes were compared and analyzed. The blade tip section of a Sinoma87.5 was taken as the experimental object, and the deicing experiment of blade by electric heating was carried out under artificial ice-covering laboratory conditions. The simulation and experimental results show that the deicing process by electric heating can be divided into three typical stages: initial temperature rise, stagnation, and rapid temperature rise. Under the influence of incoming flow conditions, the temperature rise of the front stagnation point region lags behind that of the windward side, and the steady-state peak temperature is lower. Compared with the cyclic heating mode, the continuous heating mode can enter and cross the stagnation period more quickly. The peak steady-state temperature of the continuous heating mode is 24.2 °C, and the deviation from the simulation result is only 2.8 °C, which is within the acceptable error range, effectively verifying the reliability of the numerical calculation model established. Ginger is an important spice crop in the north-eastern region of India. Rhizome rot, also called soft rot, is one of the most devastating diseases found in ginger that causes yield losses of up to 100% under favourable conditions. Initially, the disease symptoms appear as a light yellowing of the leaf tips that gradually spreads down to the leaf blade of lower leaves and the leaf sheath along the margin. Under favourable environmental conditions, the disease spreads rapidly, potentially causing significant crop damage. The pathogen can infect at any stage of crop growth, and under favourable environmental conditions, the disease spreads rapidly, failing the crop. Current research emphasises mitigating the losses caused by the devastating disease by using management strategies and biocontrol agents (BCAs). Results revealed that the average highest percent rhizome germination, lowest mean disease incidence, lowest mean disease severity index, lowest coefficient of disease index value, highest rhizome yield and benefit–cost ratio were recorded with Trichoderma harzianum (10 g/kg of rhizomes) + soil application of T. harzianum-enriched well-decomposed farm yard manure (3 kg of T. harzianum mixed with 100 kg FYM at 10–15 days before sowing) + soil drenching with T. harzianum at the rate 10 kg/ha, compared to the untreated control. Furthermore, soil chemical properties such as pH, electrical conductivity, soil organic carbon, total available nitrogen, total available phosphorus, and total available potassium play critical roles in rhizome rot disease severity. BCAs can suppress the phytopathogenic fungi and modulate different functions in plants. Full article

Turbines are rotating machines that generate power by the expansion of a fluid; due to their characteristics, these turbomachines are widely applied in aerospace propulsion systems. Due to the clearance between the rotor blade tip and casing, there is a leakage flow from the blade pressure to the suction sides, which generates energy loss. There are different strategies that can be applied to avoid part of this loss; one of them is the application of so-called desensitization techniques. The application of these techniques on gas turbines has been widely evaluated; however, there is a lack of analyses of hydraulic turbines. This study is a continuation of earlier analyses conducted during the first stage of the hydraulic axial turbine used in the low-pressure oxidizer turbopump (LPOTP) of the space shuttle main engine (SSME). The previous work analyzed the application of squealer geometries at the rotor tip. In the present paper, winglet geometry techniques are investigated based on three-dimensional flowfield calculations. The commercial CFX v.19.2 and ICEM v.19.2 software were used, respectively, on the numerical simulations and computational mesh generation. Experimental results published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and data from previous works were used on the computational model validation. The parametric analysis was conducted by varying the thickness and width of the winglet. The results obtained show that by increasing the winglet thickness, the stage efficiency is also increased. However, the geometric dimension of its width has minimal impact on this result. An average efficiency increase of 2.0% was observed across the entire turbine operational range. In the case of the squealer, for the design point, the maximum efficiency improvement was 1.62%, compared to the current improvement of 2.23% using the winglet desensitization technique. It was found that the proposed geometries application also changes the cavitation occurrence along the stage, which is a relevant result, since it can impact the turbine life cycle. Full article

The startup dynamics of wind turbines have a direct impact on their cut-in speed and thus their capacity factor, considering highly transient winds in urban environments. Due to the complex nature of the startup dynamics, the published research on it is severely lacking. Unless the startup dynamics and cut-in speed of a wind turbine are known, it is difficult to evaluate its capacity factor and levelized cost of energy (LCoE) for commercial viability. In this study, a Savonius vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) has been considered and its startup dynamics evaluated using numerical techniques. Moreover, the effects of turbine inertia, arising from bearing frictional losses, generator load, etc., on the startup dynamics have been studied. Advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based solvers have been utilized for this purpose. The flow-induced rotation of the turbine blades has been modeled using a six degree of freedom (6DoF) approach. Turbine inertia has been modeled using the mass moment of inertia of the turbine rotor and systematically increased to mimic the additional inertia and losses due to bearings and the generator. The results indicate that inertia has a significant impact on the startup dynamics of the VAWT. It was observed that as the turbine inertia increased, it took longer for the turbine to reach its steady or peak operational speed. Increasing the inertia by 10%, 20% and 30% increased the time taken by the turbine to reach its peak rotational speed by 13.3%, 16.7% and 23.2%, respectively. An interesting observation from the results obtained is that an increase in turbine inertia does not change the peak rotational speed. For the Savonius rotor considered, the peak rotational speed remained 122 rpm, and its tip speed ratio (TSR) remained 0.6 while increasing the turbine inertia. Full article

Tip leakage flow interacts with the mainstream, impacting the energy transmission process within the impeller of the fan and causing a significant flow loss. Understanding the flow characteristics within the impeller is a prerequisite and foundation for achieving efficient operation of the fan. Therefore, numerical simulations and experimental methods were employed to obtain the internal flow field of the mining counter-rotating axial flow fan, and the influence of flow rate on the tip leakage flow pattern was mastered. The spatial trajectory of the leakage vortex was quantified, and the distribution characteristics of the backflow were explored. The mechanism of energy loss caused by the leakage flow was revealed. The research findings indicate that when the flow rate exceeds 1.0 QBEP (QBEP is flow rate at the best efficiency point), the complex flow field near the blade tip is mainly caused by the tip leakage flow. However, the tip leakage flow and the leading edge overflow are the main factors causing disturbances in the flow field within the impeller at small flow rates. At large flow rates, the starting positions of the tip leakage vortex cores for both the front and rear impellers are located near the middle of the blade tip. As the flow rate decreases, the starting position of the vortex core gradually shifts toward the leading edge point, and the vortex structure evolves from an initial circular shape to an elliptical shape. The tip leakage flow and the leading edge overflow are the main cause of the backflow at the impeller inlet. The helical vortices caused by the tip leakage flow and the leading edge overflow, as well as the backflow in the impeller, are the key factors causing energy loss in the tip clearance flow field. Since fan blades are exposed to fatigue, and in some cases harsh loading conditions, they may exhibit fracture failures due to crack propagation, resulting in significant losses. Previous studies of crack propagation in blades are mainly confined to either simplified blade geometry or loads, resulting in a significant discrepancy between the simulated crack propagation and the real blade propagation behavior, while it is lacking for challenging shapes and loads. A co-simulation approach of FRANC3D and ABAQUS was developed to study the crack propagation of an axial-flow fan blade subjected to centrifugal, aerodynamic, and combined loads. The projected approach is validated with results obtained from analytical calculations and experiments. Meanwhile, making use of benchmarks, the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) and the prediction of mixed-mode crack growth path are validated. Considering various loads, the crack propagation path response for the fan blade is computed for different growth steps. The results pinpoint that the crack propagation length of the crack tip center is maximum under centrifugal loading. However, the aerodynamic load led to a maximum propagation length of the crack tip endpoints. In addition, the combined force of centrifugal and aerodynamic loads limits the crack from growing. Seasonal velocity variations can significantly impact the total energy delivered to microgrids produced by river hydrokinetic turbines. These turbines typically use a diffuser to increase the velocity at the rotor section, adding weight and raising deployment costs. There is a need for practical solutions to improve the capacity factor of such turbines. Our solution involves using multiple turbine rotors that can be interchanged to match seasonal velocity changes, eliminating shrouds to simplify design and reduce costs. This solution requires turbines that are designed to have an easily interchanged rotor, which requires us to limit the rotor to a two-blade design to also lower costs. This approach adjusts the turbine power curve with different two-blade rotor sizes, enhancing the yearly capacity factor. BladeGen ANSYS Workbench is used to design three two-blade rotors for free stream velocities of 1.6, 2.2, and 2.8 m/s. For each turbine rotor, 3D simulation is applied to reduce aerodynamic losses and target a coefficient of performance of about 45%. Mechanical stress analyses assess the displacement and stress of the used composite materials. Numerical results show good agreement with experimental data, with rotor efficiencies ranging from 43% to 45% at a tip speed ratio of 4 and power output between 5.4 and 5.6 kW. Results show that rotor interchangeability significantly enhances the turbine capacity factor, increasing it from 52% to 92% by adapting to river seasonal velocity changes. Full article

The integrated ducted structure significantly enhances the aerodynamic performance of the duct–rotor system, reducing noise and enhancing rotor safety. However, in the duct–rotor system, the coupled parameters of the rotor and the duct are crucial to its aerodynamic characteristics. This study employs a Computational Fluid Dynamics numerical analysis to investigate the aerodynamic performance of the duct–rotor, focusing on coupled parameters related to the rotor blade’s relative position and tip gap. Additionally, our research delves into the fundamental mechanisms of key coupled parameters, such as the blade tip gap, elucidating their role in optimizing the duct–rotor’s aerodynamics. The results emphasize the critical role of the tip gap in influencing the aerodynamic performance of the duct–rotor. Notably, when the tip gap exceeds 3.0% of the duct’s radius, the aerodynamic advantage provided by the duct is insufficient to offset the loss in the rotor’s performance. As the tip gap exceeds 7.0% of the duct’s radius, the aerodynamic deterioration caused by the duct gradually stabilizes. Furthermore, the influence of rotor blade position on aerodynamic performance is relatively minor. However, placing the rotor at the duct exit position proves advantageous for improving the aerodynamic distribution characteristics of the system. Full article

The Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) is categorized as a lift-based turbomachine. It faces challenges in the low tip speed ratio (TSR) range and requires initial torque for the starting operation. Ongoing efforts are being made to enhance the turbine’s self-starting capability. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were utilized to tackle the identified challenge. The Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approach was employed, combined with the shear–stress transport (SST) kω turbulence model, to resolve fluid flow equations. The investigation focused on optimizing the placement of auxiliary blades by considering design parameters such as the pitch angle and horizontal and vertical distances. The goal was to increase the turbine efficiency and initial torque in the low-TSR range while minimizing efficiency loss at high-TSR ranges, which is the primary challenge of auxiliary blade installation. Implementing the auxiliary blade successfully extended the rotor’s operational range, shifting the rotor operation’s onset from TSR 1.4 to 0.7. The optimal configuration for installing the auxiliary blade involves a pitch angle of 0°, a horizontal ratio of 0.52, and a vertical ratio of 0.41. To address the ineffectiveness of auxiliary blades at high-TSRs, installing deflectors in various configurations was explored. Introducing a double deflector can significantly enhance the overall efficiency of the conventional Darrieus VAWT and the optimum rotor with the auxiliary blade by 47% and 73% at TSR = 2.5, respectively. The operation of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) to generate low-carbon electricity is growing in popularity. Their advantages over the widely used horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) include their low tip speed, which reduces noise, and their cost-effective installation and maintenance. A Farrah turbine equipped with 12 blades was designed to enhance performance and was recently the subject of experimental investigation. However, little research has been focused on turbine configurations with more than three blades. The objective of this study is to employ numerical methods to analyse the performance of the Farrah wind turbine and to validate the findings in comparison with experimental results. The investigated blade pitch angles included both positive and negative angles of 7, 15, 20 and 40 degrees. The k-ω SST model with the sliding mesh technique was used to perform simulations of a 14.4 million element unstructured mesh. Comparable trends of power output results in the experimental investigation were obtained and the assumptions of mechanical losses discussed. Wake recovery was determined at an approximate distance of nine times the turbine diameter. Two large complex quasi-symmetric vortical structures were observed between positive and negative blade pitch angles, located in the near wake region of the turbine and remaining present throughout its rotation. It is demonstrated that a number of recognised vortical structures are transferred towards the wake region, further contributing to its formation. Additional notable vortical formations are examined, along with a recirculation zone located in the turbine’s core, which is described to exhibit quasi-symmetric behaviour between positive and negative rotations. An improved multi-objective design optimization framework is proposed for the efficient design of proprotor blades tailored to specific high-altitude mission requirements. This framework builds upon existing methods by leveraging a reformulated Vortex Particle Method (rVPM) and incorporates three key stages: (1) rapid determination of overall proprotor parameters using a semi-empirical model, (2) optimized blade chord and twist distribution bounds based on minimum energy loss theory, and (3) global optimization with a high-fidelity rVPM-based aerodynamic solver coupled with a multi-objective hybrid optimization algorithm. Applied to a small high-altitude tiltrotor, the framework produced Pareto-optimal proprotor designs with a figure of merit of 0.814 and cruise efficiency of 0.896, exceeding mission targets by over 15%. Key findings indicate that large taper ratios and low twist improve hover performance, while elliptical blade planforms with high twist enhance cruise efficiency, and a tip anhedral further boosts overall performance. This framework streamlines the industrial customization of proprotor blades, significantly reducing the design space for advanced optimization while improving performance in demanding high-altitude environments. A submersible sewage pump is designed for conveying solid–liquid two-phase media containing sewage, waste, and fiber components, through its small and compact design and its excellent anti-winding and anti-clogging capabilities. In this paper, the computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD-DEM) coupling model is used to study the influence of different conveying conditions and particle parameters on the wear of the flow components in a submersible sewage pump. At the same time, the energy balance equation is used to explore the influence mechanism of different tip clearance sizes on the internal flow pattern, wear, and energy conversion mechanism of the pump. This study demonstrates that increasing the particle volume fraction decreases the inlet particle velocity and intensifies wear in critical areas. When enlarging the tip clearance thickness from 0.4 mm to 1.0 mm, the leakage vortex formation at the inlet is enhanced, leading to increased wear rates in terms of the blade and volute. Consequently, the total energy loss and turbulent kinetic energy generation increased by 3.57% and 2.25%, respectively, while the local loss coefficient in regard to the impeller channel cross-section increased significantly. The findings in this study offer essential knowledge for enhancing the performance and ensuring the stable operation of pumps under solid–liquid two-phase flow conditions. Full article

Characteristics of Differential Entropy Generation in a Transonic Rotor and Its Applications to Casing Treatment Designs

Casing treatments improve compressor stability but often at the expense of compressor efficiency. In this study, the differential entropy generation rate (DEGR) was applied to both efficiency evaluation and stall margin estimation. Rotor 67 was used as the compressor in this study and the simulation results were analyzed to correlate the distribution of the DEGR with the flow structures in the rotor at three rotating speeds. The characteristics of the DEGR at each speed were analyzed, exhibiting the characteristics of the flow structures at peak efficiency (PE) and near stall (NS) flow conditions. Loss analysis was conducted on the peak efficiency operating condition, particularly at 100% rotating speed. The critical state of the DEGR was investigated to identify stall occurrences on the near-stall condition. It was thus concluded that the DEGR can be a unified measure of both efficiency and stall margin. This theoretical exploration was subsequently applied to the design of casing treatments with two objectives: enhancing peak efficiency at 100% rotating speed and improving stability margins at all speeds. Two casing treatments were designed, with two circumferential grooves positioned axially at different locations. Their mechanisms for reducing the high DEGR area in the peak efficiency condition of 100% speed and suppressing an increase in DEGR during approaching stall were investigated, respectively. The results indicated that the presence of a groove near the leading edge of the blade tip can effectively suppress stall at all speeds. In order to achieve peak efficiency at high speeds, the extent of casing treatment coverage above the shock wave plays a crucial role in minimizing losses. Full article
