Sialic Acid-Loaded Nanoliposomes with Enhanced Stability and Transdermal Delivery for Synergistic Anti-Aging, Skin Brightening, and Barrier Repair

Objectives: Sialic acid (SA), a naturally occurring compound abundantly found in birds’ nests, holds immense promise for skincare applications owing to its remarkable biological properties. However, its low bioavailability, poor stability, and limited skin permeability have constrained its widespread application. Methods: To overcome these challenges, SA was encapsulated within nanoliposomes (NLPs) by the high-pressure homogenization technique to develop an advanced and efficient transdermal drug delivery system. The skincare capabilities of this novel system were comprehensively evaluated across multiple experimental platforms, including in vitro cell assays, 3D skin models, in vivo zebrafish studies, and clinical human trials. Results: The SA-loaded NLPs (SA-NLPs) substantially improved the transdermal penetration and retention of SA, facilitating enhanced cellular uptake and cell proliferation. Compared to free SA, SA-NLPs demonstrated a 246.98% increase in skin retention and 1.8-fold greater cellular uptake in HDF cells. Moreover, SA-NLPs protected cells from oxidative stress-induced damage, stimulated collagen synthesis, and effectively suppressed the secretion of matrix metalloproteinases, tyrosinase activity, and melanin production. Additionally, zebrafish-based assays provided in vivo evidence of the skincare efficacy of SA-NLPs. Notably, clinical evaluations demonstrated that a 56-day application of the SA-NLPs-containing cream resulted in a 4.20% increase in L*, 7.87% decrease in b*, 8.45% decrease in TEWL, and 4.01% reduction in wrinkle length, indicating its superior brightening, barrier-repair, and anti-aging effects. Conclusions: This multi-level, systematic investigation strongly suggests that SA-NLPs represent a highly promising transdermal delivery strategy, capable of significantly enhancing the anti-aging, barrier-repair, and skin-brightening properties of SA, thus opening new avenues for its application in the fields of dermatology and cosmeceuticals. Background/Objectives: Increasing levels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have recently been observed at the human–domestic animal–wildlife interface. Wild birds have been identified as carriers of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and serve as excellent biomarkers for epidemiological studies. This study assessed the current AMR presence in Eastern Spain’s commensal Escherichia coli isolated from free-ranging Bonelli’s eagles (Aquila fasciata). Methods: Nestlings and their nests were intensively sampled between 2022 and 2024 to determine their AMR profile and characterize E. coli. AMR testing was conducted using the broth microdilution method, following the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing guidelines. Additionally, the presence of eaeA (intimin gene) and stx-1 and stx-2 (shiga toxins) was analyzed by real-time PCR to classify E. coli strains into enteropathogenic (EPEC) and Shiga-toxigenic (STEC) pathotypes. Results: Of all E. coli isolates, 41.7% were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, and 30% were multidrug-resistant. Only two strains were classified as EPEC and none as STEC. The highest resistance rates were observed for amoxicillin and tetracycline (19.6% each). Alarmingly, resistance to colistin and meropenem, last-resort antibiotics in human medicine, was also detected. Conclusions: Although the mechanisms of resistance acquisition remain unclear, transmission is likely to occur through the food chain, with synanthropic prey acting as intermediary vectors. These results highlight the role of Bonelli’s eagles as essential sentinels of environmental AMR dissemination, even in remote ecosystems. Strengthening One Health-based surveillance is necessary to address AMR’s ecological and public health risks in wildlife. Full article

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly adopted in urban settings to restore ecological functions and enhance biodiversity. This study evaluates the effects of NbS interventions on bird, insect, and plant communities in the Cavalum Valley urban green area, Penafiel (northern Portugal). Over a three-year period, systematic field surveys assessed changes in species richness, abundance, and ecological indicators following actions such as riparian restoration, afforestation, habitat diversification, and invasive species removal. Results revealed a marked increase in bird overall abundance from 538 to 941 individuals and in average pollinator population size from 9.25 to 12.20. Plant diversity also improved, with a rise in native and RELAPE-listed species (5.23%). Functional group analyses underscored the importance of vegetative structure in supporting varied foraging and nesting behaviours. These findings highlight the effectiveness of integrated NbS in enhancing biodiversity and ecological resilience in urban landscapes while reinforcing the need for long-term monitoring to guide adaptive management and conservation planning. Future work could evaluate ecological resilience thresholds and community participation in citizen science monitoring. Full article

Birds and People in Medieval Bulgaria—A Review of the Subfossil Record of Birds During the First and Second Bulgarian Empires

For the first time, the numerous scattered data on birds (wild and domestic) have been collected based on their medieval bone remains discovered on the modern territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. The collected information is about a total of 37 medieval settlements from the time of the First and Second Bulgarian Empires. Among the settlements studied are both the two medieval Bulgarian capitals (Pliska and Veliki Preslav), as well as other cities, smaller settlements, military fortresses, monasteries, and inhabited caves. The data refer to a total of 48 species of wild birds and 6 forms of domestic birds of 11 avian orders: Accipitriformes, Anseriformes, Ciconiiformes, Columbiformes, Falconiformes, Galliformes, Gruiformes, Otidiformes, Passeriformes, Pelecaniformes, and Strigiformes. The established composition of wild birds amounts to over one tenth (to 11.5%) of the modern avifauna in the country. Five of the established species (10.4%) have disappeared from the modern nesting avifauna of the country—the bearded vulture, the great bustard, the little bustard, the gray crane, and the saker falcon (the latter two species have reappeared as nesters in the past few years). First Bulgarian Empire (681–1018): Investigated settlements—22. Period covered—five centuries (7th to 11th c.). Found in total: at least 44 species/forms of birds, of which 39 species of wild birds and 5 forms of poultry. Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1396): Investigated settlements—15. Period covered—3 centuries (12th to 14th c.). Found in total: at least 39 species/forms of birds, of which 33 species of wild birds and 6 forms of poultry. The groups of raptors, water, woodland, openland, synanthropic and domestic birds were analyzed separately. The conclusion was made that during the two periods of the Middle Ages, birds had an important role in the material and spiritual life of the population of the Bulgarian lands. Birds were mainly used for food (domestic birds), although some were objects of hunting. No traces of processing were found on the bones. Birds were subjects of works of applied and monumental art. Their images decorated jewelry, tableware, walls of buildings and other structures. Full article

Effects of the Invasive Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) on Nest Site Competition and Predation in Native Birds: A Before-After-Control-Impact Study

Despite concerns about invasive Common Mynas (Acridotheres tristis), few studies have experimentally demonstrated their impact on native birds. Using a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) design with 142 nest boxes, we assessed how Myna presence affected House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) and Great Tits (Parus major) before (2009–2010) and after (2020–2021) their arrival in 2015. Half the boxes had large entrances accessible to all three species; half had small entrances accessible only to Great Tits. In a 2022 field experiment, we manipulated nest box entrances and used cameras to study Myna predation and nest usurpation. Following the establishment of Myna, House Sparrow breeding declined by 68.1%. Great Tits increased use of small entrance boxes by 59.9% and decreased use of large entrance boxes by 45.4%. Although overall Great Tit breeding increased, fledging success declined in large entrance boxes, but not small entrance ones. In the 2022 experiment, 46% (n = 26) of Great Tit nests were predated; Common Mynas were responsible for 50% of these cases and subsequently bred in the usurped nests. This study experimentally demonstrates that House Sparrow breeding numbers decrease and that Great Tits change their nesting behavior after the appearance of the Common Myna. Additionally, this research found that Common Mynas impact native species by predating and usurping nests. Installing small-entrance boxes can help manage Great Tit populations. Further research should explore nest box designs for House Sparrows and their impacts on other cavity-nesting and non-cavity-nesting bird species. Full article

Oak–lime–hornbeam forests are among the most biodiverse temperate forests. This study compared older managed stands with a strictly protected old-growth forest in terms of their features. Managed forests at various stages of silvicultural operations were selected: a mature stand where regeneration cuts had not yet begun, as well as stands where such treatments were in the initial or advanced stages. Stand features that may affect the diversity and density of avifauna were analyzed on the basis of 151 sample plots. In four successive breeding seasons, birds in these stands were surveyed. The stands differed significantly in volume, the density of large trees, regeneration, the vertical structure, and the amount of deadwood. The number of bird species was the highest in the initial and advanced gap-cut stands. Group-selection cutting in those stands led to a succession of non-forest bird species and, hence, a greater number of birds building nests on or close to ground as compared to the old-growth forest. The old-growth forest was the most similar to the mature managed stand in terms of bird species composition (Jaccard index = 0.76). The old-growth forest was characterized by the highest bird density (91 pairs per 10 ha), with more than half of the breeding pairs being cavity nesters. In the managed forest, the bird density was from 63 to 72 pairs per 10 ha. Based on the present study, it can be concluded that effective conservation of bird assemblages is possible in managed forests, provided that certain concessions are made. Drawing on the characteristics of old-growth forests, several guidelines can be proposed for forest management. First and foremost, it is essential to maintain a mosaic forest structure. Secondly, it is necessary to retain an adequate number of large, old trees within the stand and to ensure a sufficient volume and diversity of deadwood. Additionally, it is absolutely critical to shift timber harvesting activities outside of the bird breeding season. Full article

The grey-headed woodpecker (Picus canus) (GHW) is one of the least-studied European woodpeckers, listed in Annex I of the Birds Directive. We examined the key environmental characteristics that determine the possibility of GHW occurrence in vast forests in northeast Poland. Woodpeckers were inventoried in spring on 54 study plots (4 km2) covering 20% of the forest area. Active territories were detected and mapped using the playback experiment of territorial voices and drumming. The generalized linear model GLM, random forest RF, and Boosting were used for modeling. GLM was used to indicate the most critical factors affecting the abundance of GHW. The number of territories in a single study plot ranged from 0 to 3; the most frequent were areas without woodpeckers. The probability of the nesting of the GHW was increasing at plots with watercourses, a bigger share of mixed forest area, and a proportion of stands over 120 years old. The calculation for all 400 quadrats allowed us to estimate the population size at approximately 180–200 breeding pairs. The overall density of GHW in the study area was assessed at 0.13/km2, while at the optimal quadrats, it increased to about 0.75/km2. Preference for watercourses was linked to alders growing along water banks. Near the water, there are often small meadows where the GHW can prey on ants. In turn, old-growth forests above 120 years old increased the probability of the presence of the GHW. There are more dead and dying trees in older forests, which are the ones the GHW chooses to excavate cavities. To effectively protect the habitats of the GHW, it is necessary to maintain a larger area of stands over 120 years old, mainly on wet sites. Full article

Piroplasmids (Babesia spp., Rangelia spp., Theileria spp., Cytauxzoon spp.) are tick-borne apicomplexan protozoa that infect, depending on the species, erythrocytes and leucocytes in a wide variety of mammals and birds. The genera Bartonella and Borrelia include vector-borne bacteria that can infect and cause disease in both animals and humans. Detection of hemotropic bacteria and piroplasmids in wild animals is often challenging due to low bacteremia or parasitemia. Digital (d)PCR has proven to be an effective modality for the detection and quantification of DNA of hemotropic pathogens with low parasitemia. This study compared dPCR results from 366 biological samples from seven different Brazilian wild animal groups (5 Xenarthra species, 5 deer species, 3 felid species, 1 canid species, 3 rodent species, 1 bat species, 1 tapir species, and 12 bird species) to two other molecular diagnostic techniques: quantitative real-time (qPCR) and nested (nPCR). For this study, DNA extracted from wild animal blood and spleen samples were subjected to a multiplex dPCR assay for piroplasmids, Bartonella spp., and Borrelia spp. For comparison, the same primers and probes for each agent were used in qPCR assays. Additionally, an nPCR based on the 18S rRNA gene for piroplasmids was performed. The proportions of positive results obtained using dPCR were 85.5% for piroplasmids, 33.6% for Bartonella spp., and 16.7% for Borrelia spp. For all tested agents, dPCR proved to be the technique with the highest sensitivity, making it a useful tool for screening vector-borne agents in biological samples from wild animals with low parasitemia. Birds are hosts to a diverse assemblage of vector-transmitted haemosporidian parasites. However, the true genetic diversity and many host–parasite interactions are still unknown, particularly in under-represented species groups such as wild doves and pigeons (Columbiformes). In this study, we examined the prevalence and lineage diversity of haemosporidian genera Plasmodium, Leucocytozoon, and Haemoproteus in three species of wild columbids, sampled in Germany. Examinations were performed by applying molecular methods (nested PCR and one-step multiplex PCR) and blood smear examination, and their respective advantages and disadvantages are discussed. In the case of the European Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur, samples were collected along a west–east gradient throughout Germany, covering migratory birds from the Western and Central-Eastern flyway of this species. Although no infection was detected in the Stock Dove Columba oenas samples, 53% of Turtle Dove and 86% of Common Woodpigeon Columba palumbus harbored a parasite of at least one haemosporidian genus, revealing previously unknown lineage–host interactions. We were not able to demonstrate a correlation between infection status (presence or absence of infection based on PCR results) and parasitemia with condition based on the heterophil to lymphocyte ratio (H/L ratio). Neither lineage occurrence nor prevalence of infection followed any geographically specific patterns. Thus, haemosporidian lineages found in Turtle Doves could not be used as a marker of geographic origin that would allow the tracking of their nonbreeding distribution. Full article

Avian species pose risks for transmitting viruses, including avian circoviruses, that could be a threat for conservation and introduction into commercial flocks. This study investigated the presence of circovirus in 81 avian species from different regions of Brazil, including the northwest region of São Paulo and the coast of Paraná. Blood samples and oropharyngeal, cloacal, and other organ swabs were collected. The samples were extracted and screened using nested PCR for the replicase gene. In positive cases, the samples were sequenced. Regarding the results, a total of 1528 swab samples were collected from 601 birds, of which 24 (4%, 95% CI: 2.4–5.6) tested positive for various circovirus subtypes. Most positive birds (92%, 22/24) were from the northwest region of São Paulo, mainly from the city of São José do Rio Preto (54%, 12/22). The study also identified the presence of circovirus subtypes in avian families that were not previously described. Furthermore, the presence of raven circovirus in the blood sample of a Nyctibius griseus (potoo), suggests the possibility of a new carrier of the virus. Ultimately, the findings underscore the complexity of the viral ecology of avian circoviruses, highlight the necessity of enhancing future studies, and emphasize the need to support health assessment of wildlife, including marine birds. When selecting a habitat, it is optimal for organisms to choose one that maximizes reproductive success through access to high-quality resources, particularly in species that engage in parental care. However, organisms may inadvertently select a habitat for breeding that would initially appear preferential and undamaged, but may, in reality, be detrimental to parent and/or offspring fitness. In this study, we tested whether migratory European Pied Flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) nesting in forest patches affected by outbreaks of the great web-spinning sawfly (Acantholyda posticalis) experienced fitness reductions indicative of an ecological trap, compared to those nesting in unaffected forest patches. After installing nest boxes to attract breeding pairs and potentially combat the outbreak, we found that Flycatchers inhabiting areas with sawfly outbreaks had similar clutch sizes to pairs breeding in unaffected forest patches. Contrarily, the fledgling number and body condition were significantly lower for those nesting in the damaged forests. In providing nest boxes for migrating Flycatcher pairs in forest patches that were subsequently impacted by a pest insect outbreak, an ecological trap arose for those pairs choosing to nest in what appeared to be an unaffected forest at first. Given the inability of breeding pairs to distinguish habitat quality on initial inspection, we suggest that nest boxes be used with caution in areas with unfavorable habitat conditions when attracting migratory birds, given the trends of their declining global numbers. Ecological determinants of avian population dynamics are essential for effective wildlife management and conservation. Black and grey francolins are classified as being of least concern by the IUCN and are an ecologically significant bird in the northern regions of Pakistan. Although habitat degradation and overhunting have adversely affected their populations, research on the population structure and habitat preferences of the Totali Game Reserve, Buner District, Pakistan, remains limited. The present study applied distance sampling via the line transect method to estimate population densities and the quadrat method to assess vegetation characteristics across three distinct habitats. A statistical analysis revealed significant variations in densities across the three habitat types—agricultural lands, agroforests, and pasturelands—with both species exhibiting distinct preferences for pastureland ecosystems. Seasonal trends indicated that autumn represented the peak period for the population, driven by post-breeding surges and optimal habitat conditions. Moreover, both species demonstrated a strong affinity for habitats dominated by specific plant species, including hopbush, raspberry, barberry, and blackberry, which provide a critical resource for food, foraging, nesting, and shelter. These findings highlight the ecological importance of pasturelands and specific vegetation types for supporting the survival of these species. Furthermore, conservation efforts should prioritize the preservation and restoration of pastureland ecosystems and incorporate rigorous monitoring programs to guide adaptive management strategies aimed at mitigating population declines. Objectives: This study aimed to characterize the basic structure of sialylated glycopeptide (SCP) from edible bird’s nest, and to explore the intervention effect and mechanism of SCP based on a mouse lung inflammation model induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Methods: C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into the control group (CON), model group (LPS), EBN group, SCP group, and SA group. Results: The results showed that SCP had the typical structures of polypeptides and carbohydrates. SCP effectively intervened in the lung inflammation response. The number of neutrophils (Neu) in BALF decreased by 41.3%, the level of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) decreased by 36.4%, and the W/D ratio of lung tissues decreased by 27.2%, effectively preventing pathological changes in lung tissues. A total of 40 differential metabolites such as choline, linolenic acid, and xanthine were screened between the SCP group and the LPS group. These differential metabolites were mainly enriched in the metabolic pathways of glycerophospholipids, alpha-linolenic acid, and purines. Conclusions: The research results support that SCP, as the active substance of edible bird’s nest, can effectively improve lung inflammation, providing theoretical guidance for the development of functional edible bird’s nest products. Renesting Propensity of Reintroduced Eastern Migratory Whooping Cranes

Laying additional clutches of eggs, or renesting, can provide birds with more opportunities to breed each season, ultimately increasing reproductive potential. This is important for long-lived species like cranes, that produce relatively few offspring annually. The reintroduced Eastern Migratory Population (EMP) of endangered Whooping Cranes relies on releases of captive-reared juveniles for population growth. Using long-term nest monitoring data, we assessed the renesting propensity of 105 unique pairs of Whooping Cranes during 2005–2024 (n = 359). We used a two-tiered analysis of binomial generalized linear mixed-effects models to evaluate the effects of 15 individual covariates, related to parental age or experience, nest management geography, or chronology. Overall, 37.3% of pairs renested following failed first nesting attempts. We documented higher renesting rates from breeding females that were older or had more years of nesting experience (37.1% increase for each unit increase in female age), pairs outside of the regions in which captive-reared cranes were released (264.0% increase in “other” region compared to Necedah), or that had nests fail earlier in the season (10.1% decline for each day later in the season a first nest failed). Additionally, when eggs were collected from first nests as a part of nest management, pairs were more likely to renest (69.4% renested) than if their nest failed naturally (27.3% renested). Low rates of natural reproduction limit growth rates in the EMP, so understanding effects of management actions and limitations on breeding are important conservation tools which can be applied to other endangered species. Mediterranean chestnut forests represent ecologically and economically important systems that support biodiversity while providing timber, non-timber forest products, and cultural services. However, traditional management practices are undergoing substantial shifts, with potential implications for forest structure and biodiversity. This study investigates how variation in forest structure and management intensity influences woodpecker communities in chestnut-dominated forests on Mount Paiko, northern Greece. Standardized surveys were conducted at 26 sites stratified by management intensity, and structural forest characteristics such as tree diameter, basal area, and deadwood volume were quantified. Species richness, abundance, and habitat use (feeding and nesting signs) were assessed in relation to these variables. Seven woodpecker species were detected, with distinct differences in species composition across management types. Feeding activity was positively associated with mean tree diameter, while basal area showed a significant negative correlation with woodpecker diversity. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed species-specific preferences along structural gradients, highlighting the association of the Black and Lesser Spotted woodpeckers with larger-diameter trees and deadwood-rich stands. Our results underscore the role of structural heterogeneity in supporting diverse woodpecker assemblages and highlight the need to integrate biodiversity conservation into chestnut forest management, particularly through selective retention of large trees and deadwood elements.
