The literature clearly indicates that both academia and industry are strongly committed to developing comprehensive processes for spent Li-ion battery (LIB) recycling. In this regard, the current study presents an original contribution by providing a quantitative assessment of a large-scale recycling plant designed for the treatment of completely spent LIBs. In addition to a concept of the basic process, this assessment also considers a case study of a thermal integration and CO2 capture subsystem. Process flow modeling software was used to evaluate the contribution of all process steps and equipment to overall energy consumption and to mass balance the data required for the technical assessment of the large-scale recycling plant. To underline the advantages and identify the optimal novel process concept, several key performance indicators were determined, such as recovery efficiency, specific energy/material consumption, and specific CO2 emissions. In addition, the economic potential of the recycling plants was evaluated for the defined case studies based on capital and O&M costs. The results indicate that, even with CO2 capture applied, the thermally integrated process with the combustion of hydrogen produced in the recycling plant remains the most promising large-scale configuration for spent LIB recycling. Smart safety helmets equipped with vision systems are emerging as powerful tools for industrial infrastructure inspection. This paper presents a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of such VSLAM-enabled (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) helmets. We surveyed the evolution from basic helmet cameras to intelligent, sensor-fused inspection platforms, highlighting how modern helmets leverage real-time visual SLAM algorithms to map environments and assist inspectors. A systematic literature search was conducted targeting high-impact journals, patents, and industry reports. We classify helmet-integrated camera systems into monocular, stereo, and omnidirectional types and compare their capabilities for infrastructure inspection. We examine core VSLAM algorithms (feature-based, direct, hybrid, and deep-learning-enhanced) and discuss their adaptation to wearable platforms. Multi-sensor fusion approaches integrating inertial, LiDAR, and GNSS data are reviewed, along with edge/cloud processing architectures enabling real-time performance. This paper compiles numerous industrial use cases, from bridges and tunnels to plants and power facilities, demonstrating significant improvements in inspection efficiency, data quality, and worker safety. Key challenges are analyzed, including technical hurdles (battery life, processing limits, and harsh environments), human factors (ergonomics, training, and cognitive load), and regulatory issues (safety certification and data privacy). We also identify emerging trends, such as semantic SLAM, AI-driven defect recognition, hardware miniaturization, and collaborative multi-helmet systems. This review finds that VSLAM-equipped smart helmets offer a transformative approach to infrastructure inspection, enabling real-time mapping, augmented awareness, and safer workflows. We conclude by highlighting current research gaps, notably in standardizing systems and integrating with asset management, and provide recommendations for industry adoption and future research directions. Graphite has been recognized as a critical material by the United States (US), the European Union (EU), and Australia. Owing to its unique structure and properties, it is utilized in many industries and has played a key role in the clean energy sector, particularly in the lithium-ion battery (LIB) industries. With the projected increase in global graphite demand, driven by the shift to clean energy and the use of EVs, as well as the geographically concentrated production and reserves of natural graphite, interest in graphite recycling has increased, with a specific focus on using spent LIBs and other waste carbon material. Although most established and developing LIB recycling technologies are focused on cathode materials, some have started recycling graphite, with promising results. Based on the different secondary sources and recycling paths reported, hydrometallurgy-based treatment is usually employed, especially for the purification of graphite; greener alternatives are being explored, replacing HF both in lab-scale research and in industry. This offers a viable solution to resource dependency and mitigates the environmental impact associated with graphite production. These developments signal a trend toward sustainable and circular pathways for graphite recycling. Full article

This study presents a compact and high-efficiency microstrip antenna integrated with a square electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structure for radio frequency energy harvesting to power battery-less Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and medical devices in the 5.8 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band. The proposed antenna features a compact design with reduced physical dimensions of 36 × 40 mm2 (0.69λo × 0.76λo) while providing high-performance parameters such as a reflection coefficient of −27.9 dB, a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of 1.08, a gain of 7.91 dBi, directivity of 8.1 dBi, a bandwidth of 188 MHz, and radiation efficiency of 95.5%. Incorporating EBG cells suppresses surface waves, enhances gain, and optimizes impedance matching through 50 Ω inset feeding. The simulated and measured results of the designed antenna show a high correlation. This study demonstrates a robust and promising solution for high-performance wireless systems requiring a compact size and energy-efficient operation. Full article

The present mini review considers the fundamental advantages of all-solid-state anode-free sodium batteries as well as challenges in their creation. The advantages of all-solid-state anode-free sodium batteries reveal themselves when comparing them with ordinary sodium-ion batteries, sodium metal batteries, sodium batteries with liquid electrolyte, and their lithium counterparts. Balancing Profitability and Sustainability in Electric Vehicles Insurance: Underwriting Strategies for Affordable and Premium Models

This study aims to develop an optimal underwriting strategy for affordable (H1 and M1) and premium (L1 and M2) electric vehicles (EVs), balancing financial risk and sustainability commitments. The research is motivated by regulatory pressures, risk management needs, and sustainability goals, necessitating an adaptation of traditional underwriting models. The study employs a modified Delphi method with industry experts to identify key risk factors, including accident risk, repair costs, battery safety, driver behavior, and PCAF carbon impact. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine premium adjustments under different risk scenarios, categorizing EVs into four risk segments: Low-Risk, Low-Carbon (L1); Medium-Risk, Low-Carbon (M1); Medium-Risk, High-Carbon (M2); and High-Risk, High-Carbon (H1). Findings indicate that premium EVs (L1 and M2) exhibit lower volatility in underwriting costs, benefiting from advanced safety features, lower accident rates, and reduced carbon attribution penalties. Conversely, budget EVs (H1 and M1) experience higher premium fluctuations due to greater accident risks, costly repairs, and higher carbon costs under PCAF implementation. The worst-case scenario showed a 14.5% premium increase, while the best-case scenario led to a 10.5% premium reduction. The study recommends prioritizing premium EVs for insurance coverage due to their lower underwriting risks and carbon efficiency. For budget EVs, insurers should implement selective underwriting based on safety features, driver risk profiling, and energy efficiency. Additionally, incentive-based pricing such as telematics discounts, green repair incentives, and low-carbon charging rewards can mitigate financial risks and align with net-zero insurance commitments. This research provides a structured framework for insurers to optimize EV underwriting while ensuring long-term profitability and regulatory compliance. Full article

Direct electrification and hydrogen utilization represent two key pathways for decarbonizing the glass industry, with their effectiveness subject to adequate furnace design and renewable energy availability. This study presents a techno-economic assessment for optimal solar energy integration in a representative 300 t/d oxyfuel container glass furnace with a specific energy consumption of 4.35 GJ/t. A mixed-integer linear programming formulation is developed to evaluate specific melting costs, carbon emissions, and renewable energy self-consumption and self-production rates across three scenarios: direct solar coupling, battery storage, and a hydrogen-based infrastructure. Battery storage achieves the greatest reductions in specific melting costs and emissions, whereas hydrogen integration minimizes electricity export to the grid. By incorporating capital investment considerations, the study quantifies the cost premiums and capacity requirements under varying decarbonization targets. A combination of 30 MW of solar plant and 9 MW of electric boosting enables the realization of around 30% carbon reduction while increasing total costs by 25%. Deeper decarbonization targets require more advanced systems, with batteries emerging as a cost-effective solution. These findings offer critical insights into the economic and environmental trade-offs, as well as the technical constraints associated with renewable energy adoption in the glass industry, providing a foundation for strategic energy and decarbonization planning. Accelerated industrialization and surging energy demands have led to continuously rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Developing sustainable methods to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels is crucial for achieving carbon neutrality. Concurrently, the rapid development of new energy vehicles has driven a significant increase in demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are now approaching an end-of-life peak. Efficient recycling of valuable metals from spent LIBs represents a critical challenge. This study employs conventional hydrometallurgical processing to recover valuable metals from spent LIBs. Subsequently, Ni-doped Co3O4 (Ni:Co3O4) supported on the natural mineral attapulgite (ATP) was synthesized via a sol–gel method. The incorporation of a small amount of Ni into the Co3O4 lattice generates oxygen vacancies, inducing a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, which significantly enhances charge carrier transport and separation efficiency. During the photocatalytic reduction of CO2, the primary product CO generated by the Ni:Co3O4/ATP composite achieved a high production rate of 30.1 μmol·g−1·h−1. Furthermore, the composite maintains robust catalytic activity even after five consecutive reaction cycles. Full article

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are commonly used in various fields and industries, but their limited battery life has become a key constraint for their development. Wireless Power Transmission (WPT) technology, with its convenience, durability, intelligence, and unmanned features, significantly enhances UAVs’ battery life and operational range. However, the variety of UAV models and different sizes pose challenges for designing couplers in the WPT system. This paper presents a design method for an array-type coupler in a UAV WPT system that uses a deep neural network. By establishing an electromagnetic 3D structure of the array-type coupler using electromagnetic simulation software, the dimensions of the transmitting and receiving coils are modified to assess how changes in the aperture of the transmitting coil and the length of the receiving coil affect the mutual inductance of the coupler. Furthermore, deep learning methods are utilized to train a high-precision model using the calculated data as the training and testing sets. Finally, taking the FAIRSER-X model UAV as an example, the transmitting and receiving coils are wound, and the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through an LCR meter, which notably enhances the design efficiency of UAV WPT systems. Energy storage technology is crucial for addressing the intermittency of renewable energy sources and plays a key role in power systems and electronic devices. In the field of energy storage systems, multivalent vanadium-based oxides have attracted widespread attention. Among these, vanadium dioxide (VO2) is distinguished by its key advantages, including high theoretical capacity, low cost, and strong structural designability. The diverse crystalline structures and plentiful natural reserves of VO2 offer a favorable foundation for facilitating charge transfer and regulating storage behavior during energy storage processes. This mini review provides an overview of the latest progress in VO2-based materials for energy storage applications, specifically highlighting their roles in lithium-ion batteries, zinc-ion batteries, photoassisted batteries, and supercapacitors. Particular attention is given to their electrochemical properties, structural integrity, and prospects for development. Additionally, it explores future development directions to offer theoretical insights and strategic guidance for ongoing research and industrial application of VO2. Full article

This study evaluates the feasibility and visibility of electric vehicles (EVs) in Egypt, addressing critical research gaps and proposing actionable strategies to drive adoption. Employing a systematic review of academic, governmental, and industry sources, the paper identifies underexplored areas such as rural–urban adoption disparities, lifecycle assessments of EV batteries, and sociocultural barriers, including gender dynamics and entrenched consumer preferences. Its primary contribution is an interdisciplinary framework that integrates technical aspects, such as grid resilience and climate-related battery degradation, with socioeconomic dimensions, providing a holistic overview of EV feasibility in Egypt tailored to Egypt’s context. Key findings reveal infrastructure limitations, inconsistent policy frameworks, and behavioral skepticism as major hurdles, and highlight the untapped potential of renewable energy integration, particularly through synergies between solar PV generation (e.g., Benban Solar Park) and EV charging infrastructure. Recommendations prioritize policy reforms (e.g., tax incentives, streamlined tariffs), solar-powered charging infrastructure expansion, public awareness campaigns, and local EV manufacturing to stimulate economic growth. The study underscores the urgency of stakeholder collaboration to transform EVs into a mainstream solution, positioning Egypt as a regional leader in sustainable mobility and equitable development. The transition to electric mobility has significantly increased the demand for lithium-ion batteries, raising concerns about their end-of-life management. Therefore, this study presents the design, development and first implementation steps of a stationary energy storage system utilizing second-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries. These batteries, no longer suitable for traction applications due to a reduced state of health (SoH) below 80%, retain sufficient capacity for less demanding stationary applications. The proposed system is designed to be flexible and scalable, serving both research and commercial purposes. Key challenges include heterogeneous battery characteristics, safety considerations due to increased internal resistance and battery aging, and the need for flexible power electronics. An optimized dual active bridge (DAB) converter topology is introduced to connect several batteries in parallel and to ensure efficient bidirectional power flow over a wide voltage range. A first prototype, rated at 50 kW, has been built and tested in the laboratory. This study contributes to sustainable energy storage solutions by extending battery life cycles, reducing waste, and promoting economic viability for industrial partners. Full article

Photocuring, including photopolymerization and photocrosslinking, has emerged as a transformative manufacturing paradigm that enables the precise, rapid, and customizable fabrication of advanced battery components. This review first introduces the principles of photocuring and vat photopolymerization and their unique advantages of high process efficiency, non-contact fabrication, ambient-temperature processing, and robust interlayer bonding. It then systematically summarizes photocured battery components, involving electrolytes, membranes, anodes, and cathodes, highlighting their design strategies. This review examines the impact of photocured materials on the battery’s properties, such as its conductivity, lithium-ion transference number, and mechanical strength, while examining how vat-photopolymerization-derived 3D architectures optimize ion transport and electrode–electrolyte integration. Finally, it discusses current challenges and future directions for photocuring-based battery manufacturing, emphasizing the need for specialized energy storage resins and scalable processes to bridge lab-scale innovations with industrial applications. The recent surge in electric vehicle adoption has underscored the significance of new energy batteries. However, the supply chains of new energy battery manufacturers face multiple sustainability risks, which impede sustainable practice adoption. To tackle these challenges, leanness philosophy is an effective tool, and Industry 5.0 enhances its efficacy significantly, further mitigating sustainability risks. This study integrates the supply chain, leanness philosophy, and Industry 5.0 by applying quality function deployment. A novel four-phase hybrid MCDM model integrating the fuzzy Delphi method, DEMATEL, AHP, and fuzzy VIKOR, identified five key sustainability risks five core leanness principles, and eight critical Industry 5.0 enablers. By examining a Chinese new energy battery manufacturer as a case study, the findings aim to assist managers and decision-makers in mitigating sustainability risks within their supply chains. This article presents the development, integration, and experimental validation of a modular microgrid for sustainable hydrogen production, addressing global electricity demand and environmental challenges. The system was designed for initial validation in a thermoelectric power plant environment, with scalability to other applications. Centered on a six-compartment skid, it integrates photovoltaic generation, battery storage, and a liquefied petroleum gas generator to emulate typical cogeneration conditions, together with a high-purity proton exchange membrane electrolyzer. A supervisory control module ensures real-time monitoring and energy flow management, following international safety standards. The study also explores the incorporation of blockchain technology to certify the renewable origin of hydrogen, enhancing traceability and transparency in the green hydrogen market. The experimental results confirm the system’s technical feasibility, demonstrating stable hydrogen production, efficient energy management, and islanded-mode operation with preserved grid stability. These findings highlight the strategic role of hydrogen as an energy vector in the transition to a cleaner energy matrix and support the proposed architecture as a replicable model for industrial facilities seeking to combine hydrogen production with advanced microgrid technologies. Future work will address large-scale validation and performance optimization, including advanced energy management algorithms to ensure economic viability and sustainability in diverse industrial contexts.
