Background: Disruptions in freight transportation—such as service delays, infrastructure failures, and labor strikes—pose significant challenges to the reliability and efficiency of intermodal networks. To address these challenges, this study introduces Adaptive Intermodal Transportation (AIT), a resilient and flexible planning framework that enhances Synchromodal Freight Transport (SFT) by integrating real-time disruption management. Methods: Building on recent advances, we propose two novel strategies: (1) Reassign with Delay Buffer, which enables dynamic rerouting of shipments within a user-defined delay tolerance, and (2) (De)Consolidation, which allows splitting or merging of shipments across services depending on available capacity. These strategies are incorporated into a re-planning module that complements a baseline optimization model and a continuous disruption-monitoring system. Numerical experiments conducted on a Great Lakes-based case study evaluate the performance of the proposed strategies against a benchmark approach. Results: Results show that under moderate and high-disruption conditions, the proposed strategies reduce delay and disruption-incurred costs while increasing the percentage of matched shipments. The Reassign with Delay Buffer strategy offers controlled flexibility, while (De)Consolidation improves resource utilization in constrained environments. Conclusions: Overall, the AIT framework demonstrates strong potential for improving operational resilience in intermodal freight systems by enabling adaptive, disruption-aware planning decisions. Public transport companies are aware that the success of their operations largely depends on the proper sizing and optimization of their processes. Among the key activities are the maintenance and repair of the vehicle fleet. This paper presents the application of mathematical optimization methods from the field of operations research to improve the efficiency of service workshops for bus maintenance and repair. Based on an analysis of collected data using queueing theory, the authors assessed the current system performance and found that the queueing system still has spare capacity and could be downsized, which aligns with the company’s management goals. Specifically, the company plans to reduce the number of bus repair service stations (servers in a queueing system). The main question is whether the system will continue to function effectively after this reduction. Three specific downsizing solutions were proposed and evaluated using queueing theory methods: extending the daily operating hours of the workshops, reducing the number of arriving buses, and increasing the productivity of a service station (server). The results show that, under high system load, only those solutions that increase the productivity of individual service stations (servers) in the queueing system provide optimal outcomes. Other solutions merely result in longer queues and associated losses due to buses waiting for service, preventing them from performing their intended function and causing financial loss to the company. Accurate weld seam recognition is essential in automated welding systems, as it directly affects path planning and welding quality. With the rapid advancement of industrial vision, weld seam instance segmentation has emerged as a prominent research focus in both academia and industry. However, existing approaches still face significant challenges in boundary perception and structural representation. Due to the inherently elongated shapes, complex geometries, and blurred edges of weld seams, current segmentation models often struggle to maintain high accuracy in practical applications. To address this issue, a novel structure-aware and boundary-enhanced YOLO (SABE-YOLO) is proposed for weld seam instance segmentation. First, a Structure-Aware Fusion Module (SAFM) is designed to enhance structural feature representation through strip pooling attention and element-wise multiplicative fusion, targeting the difficulty in extracting elongated and complex features. Second, a C2f-based Boundary-Enhanced Aggregation Module (C2f-BEAM) is constructed to improve edge feature sensitivity by integrating multi-scale boundary detail extraction, feature aggregation, and attention mechanisms. Finally, the inner minimum point distance-based intersection over union (Inner-MPDIoU) is introduced to improve localization accuracy for weld seam regions. Experimental results on the self-built weld seam image dataset show that SABE-YOLO outperforms YOLOv8n-Seg by 3 percentage points in the AP(50–95) metric, reaching 46.3%. Meanwhile, it maintains a low computational cost (18.3 GFLOPs) and a small number of parameters (6.6M), while achieving an inference speed of 127 FPS, demonstrating a favorable trade-off between segmentation accuracy and computational efficiency. The proposed method provides an effective solution for high-precision visual perception of complex weld seam structures and demonstrates strong potential for industrial application. Full article

Object detection in remote sensing imagery is critical in environmental monitoring, urban planning, and land resource management. However, the task remains challenging due to significant scale variations, arbitrary object orientations, and complex background clutter. To address these issues, we propose a novel orientation module (SOAM Block) that jointly models object scale and directional features while exploiting geometric symmetry inherent in many remote sensing targets. The SOAM Block is constructed upon a lightweight and efficient Adaptive Multi-Scale (AMS) Module, which utilizes a symmetric arrangement of parallel depth-wise convolutional branches with varied kernel sizes to extract fine-grained multi-scale features without dilation, thereby preserving local context and enhancing scale adaptability. In addition, a Strip-based Context Attention (SCA) mechanism is introduced to model long-range spatial dependencies, leveraging horizontal and vertical 1D strip convolutions in a directionally symmetric fashion. This design captures spatial correlations between distant regions and reinforces semantic consistency in cluttered scenes. Importantly, this work is the first to explicitly analyze the coupling between object scale and orientation in remote sensing imagery. The proposed method addresses the limitations of fixed receptive fields in capturing symmetric directional cues of large-scale objects. Extensive experiments are conducted on two widely used benchmarks—DOTA and HRSC2016—both of which exhibit significant scale variations and orientation diversity. Results demonstrate that our approach achieves superior detection accuracy with fewer parameters and lower computational overhead compared to state-of-the-art methods. The proposed SOAM Block thus offers a robust, scalable, and symmetry-aware solution for high-precision object detection in complex aerial scenes. Full article

This study examines the progress, challenges, and successes in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG12), focusing on responsible consumption and production, using Qatar as a case study. The State has integrated Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) into national policies, established coordination mechanisms, and implemented action plans aligned with SDG12 targets. Achievements include renewable energy adoption, waste management reforms, and sustainable public procurement, though challenges persist in rationalizing fossil fuel subsidies, addressing data gaps, and enhancing corporate sustainability reporting. Efforts to reduce food loss and waste through redistribution programs highlight the country’s resilience, despite logistical obstacles. The nation has also advanced hazardous waste management, environmental awareness, and sustainable tourism policies, though gaps in data systems and policy coherence remain. Qatar’s approach provides a valuable local-to-global example of balancing resource-dependent economies with sustainability goals. Its strategies and lessons offer potential adaptability for other nations, especially those facing similar challenges in achieving SDG12. By strengthening data systems, enhancing policy integration, and fostering regional and international cooperation, Qatar’s efforts underscore the importance of aligning economic growth with environmental stewardship, serving as a blueprint for global sustainability initiatives. Acromegaly is caused by an excessive secretion of growth hormone and the secondary elevation of IGF-1 levels, leading to progressive changes in multiple body systems, including the craniofacial region and oral cavity. Dental manifestations such as mandibular overgrowth, macroglossia, malocclusion, periodontal disease, and prosthetic difficulties represent not only a clinical component of the disease but also a significant therapeutic and diagnostic challenge. The aim of this review is to present the current state of knowledge on the relationship between acromegaly and oral health and to analyze the role of interdisciplinary collaboration between endocrinologists and dentists in patient care. For this narrative review, a literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases covering the period from 2000 to 2025. Sixty-two peer-reviewed publications meeting the methodological and thematic criteria were included in the analysis, including original studies, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and case reports. The results indicate significant correlations between disease activity and the severity of periodontal and microbiological changes, while effective endocrine treatment only results in the partial regression of morphological changes. Particular attention was given to the role of the dentist in recognizing the early symptoms of the disease, planning prosthetic and surgical treatment, and monitoring therapy-related complications. Interdisciplinary collaboration models, including integrated clinics and co-managed care, were also described as optimal systemic solutions for improving treatment quality. The conclusion drawn from the analysis are as follows: there is a need for the permanent integration of dentistry into the standard of interdisciplinary care for patients with acromegaly, in both diagnostic and therapeutic dimensions. Increasing awareness among dentists and developing integrated collaboration models may reduce the time to diagnosis, improve patients’ quality of life, and enable the more effective management of craniofacial complications in the course of this rare disease. E-Learning is an emerging dominant phenomenon in education, making the development of robust models that can accurately represent the dynamic behavior of learners in MOOCs even more critical. In this article, we propose the Temporal Sparse Attention-Gated Recurrent Unit (TSA-GRU), a novel deep learning framework that combines TSA with a sequential encoder based on the GRU. This hybrid model effectively reconstructs student response times and learning trajectories with high fidelity by leveraging tthe emporal embeddings of instructional and feedback activities. By dynamically filtering noise from student interactions, TSA-GRU generates context-aware representations that seamlessly integrate both short-term fluctuations and long-term learning patterns. Empirical evaluation on the 2009–2010 ASSISTments dataset demonstrates that TSA-GRU achieved a test accuracy of 95.60% and a test loss of 0.0209, outperforming Modular Sparse Attention-Gated Recurrent Unit (MSA-GRU), Bayesian Knowledge Tracing (BKT), Performance Factors Analysis (PFA), and TSA in the same experimental design. TSA-GRU converged in five training epochs; thus, while TSA-GRU is demonstrated to have strong predictive performance for knowledge tracing tasks, these findings are specific to the conducted dataset and should not be implicitly regarded as conclusive for all data. More statistical validation through five-fold cross-validation, confidence intervals, and paired t-tests have confirmed the robustness, consistency, and statistically significant superiority of TSA-GRU over the baseline model MSA-GRU. TSA-GRU’s scalability and capacity to incorporate a temporal dimension of knowledge can make it acceptably well-positioned to analyze complex learner behaviors and plan interventions for adaptive learning in computerized learning systems. Electricity distribution systems face increasing challenges due to demand growth, regulatory requirements, and the integration of distributed generation. In this context, distribution companies must make strategic and well-supported investment decisions, particularly in asset reinforcement actions such as reconductoring. This paper presents a multi-stage methodology to optimize reconductoring investments under load forecasting uncertainties. The approach combines a decomposition strategy with Monte Carlo simulation to capture demand variability. By discretizing a lognormal probability density function and selecting the largest loads in the network, the methodology balances computational feasibility with modeling accuracy. The optimization model employs exhaustive search techniques independently for each network branch, ensuring precise and consistent investment decisions. Tests conducted on the IEEE 123-bus feeder consider both operational and regulatory constraints from the Brazilian context. Results show that uncertainty-aware planning leads to a narrow investment range—between USD 55,108 and USD 66,504—highlighting the necessity of reconductoring regardless of demand scenarios. A comparative analysis of representative cases reveals consistent interventions, changes in conductor selection, and schedule adjustments based on load conditions. The proposed methodology enables flexible, cost-effective, and regulation-compliant investment planning, offering valuable insights for utilities seeking to enhance network reliability and performance while managing demand uncertainties. Biosphere Reserves (BRs), designated by UNESCO, are uniquely positioned to serve as model territories for sustainable development, as they aim to harmonize biodiversity conservation with the socio-economic vitality and cultural identity of local communities. This work examines the commitment of the Spanish Network of Biosphere Reserves to the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using a survey-based research design, this study assesses the extent to which the reserves have integrated the SDGs into their strategic frameworks and operational practices. It also identifies and analyses successful initiatives and best practices implemented across Spain that exemplify this integration. The findings highlight the need for enhanced awareness and understanding of the 2030 Agenda among stakeholders, alongside stronger mechanisms for participation, cooperation, and governance. The conclusion emphasises the importance of equipping all reserves with strategic planning tools and robust systems for monitoring, evaluation, and accountability. Moreover, the analysis of exemplary cases reveals the transformative potential of sustainability-oriented projects—not only in advancing environmental goals but also in revitalizing local economies and reinforcing cultural heritage. These insights contribute to a broader understanding of how BRs can act as dynamic laboratories for sustainable development and heritage preservation. Full article

Understanding vehicle emissions is essential for developing effective carbon reduction strategies in the transport sector. Conventional emission models often assume homogeneity and linearity, overlooking real-world asymmetries that arise from variations in vehicle design and powertrain configurations. This study explores how machine learning and explainable AI techniques can effectively capture both symmetric and asymmetric emission patterns across different vehicle types, thereby contributing to more sustainable transport planning. Addressing a key gap in the existing literature, the study poses the following question: how do structural and behavioral factors contribute to asymmetric emission responses in internal combustion engine vehicles compared to new energy vehicles? Utilizing a large-scale Spanish vehicle registration dataset, the analysis classifies vehicles by powertrain type and applies five supervised learning algorithms to predict CO2 emissions. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAPs) are employed to identify nonlinear and threshold-based relationships between emissions and vehicle characteristics such as fuel consumption, weight, and height. Among the models tested, the Random Forest algorithm achieves the highest predictive accuracy. The findings reveal critical asymmetries in emission behavior, particularly among hybrid vehicles, which challenge the assumption of uniform policy applicability. This study provides both methodological innovation and practical insights for symmetry-aware emission modeling, offering support for more targeted eco-design and policy decisions that align with long-term sustainability goals. This study proposes an intelligent patrol planning framework that leverages reinforcement learning, spatiotemporal crime forecasting, and simulated sensor telemetry to optimize autonomous vehicle (AV) navigation in urban environments. Crime incidents from Washington DC (2024–2025) and Seattle (2008–2024) are modeled as a dynamic spatiotemporal graph, capturing the evolving intensity and distribution of criminal activity across neighborhoods and time windows. The agent’s state space incorporates synthetic AV sensor inputs—including fuel level, visual anomaly detection, and threat signals—to reflect real-world operational constraints. We evaluate and compare three learning strategies: Deep Q-Network (DQN), Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN), and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). Experimental results show that DDQN outperforms DQN in convergence speed and reward accumulation, while PPO demonstrates greater adaptability in sensor-rich, high-noise conditions. Real-map simulations and hourly risk heatmaps validate the effectiveness of our approach, highlighting its potential to inform scalable, data-driven patrol strategies in next-generation smart cities. Path planning algorithms for mobile robots and autonomous systems have advanced considerably, yet challenges remain in navigating complex environments while satisfying non-holonomic constraints and achieving precise target orientation. Phase portraits are traditionally used to analyse dynamical systems via equilibrium points and system trajectories, and can be a powerful framework for addressing these challenges. In this work, we propose a novel orientation-aware path planning algorithm that uses phase portrait dynamics by treating both obstacles and target poses as equilibrium points within the environment. Unlike conventional approaches, our method explicitly incorporates non-holonomic constraints and target orientation requirements, resulting in smooth, feasible trajectories with high final pose accuracy. Simulation results across 28 diverse scenarios show that our method achieves zero final orientation error with path lengths comparable to Hybrid A*, and planning times reduced by 52% on the indoor map and 84% on the playpen map relative to Hybrid A*. These results highlight the potential of phase portrait-based planning as an effective and efficient method for real-time autonomous navigation. Full article

To enable safe and effective human–robot collaboration (HRC) in smart manufacturing, it is critical to seamlessly integrate sensing, cognition, and prediction into the robot controller for real-time awareness, response, and communication inside a heterogeneous environment (robots, humans, and equipment). The proposed approach takes advantage of the prediction capabilities of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) to execute safe path planning based on feedback from a vision system. To satisfy the requirements of real-time path planning, an embedded solver based on a penalty method is applied. However, due to tight sampling times, NMPC solutions are approximate; therefore, the safety of the system cannot be guaranteed. To address this, we formulate a novel safety-critical paradigm that uses an exponential control barrier function (ECBF) as a safety filter. Several common human–robot assembly subtasks have been integrated into a real-life HRC assembly task to validate the performance of the proposed controller and to investigate whether integrating human pose prediction can help with safe and efficient collaboration. The robot uses OptiTrack cameras for perception and dynamically generates collision-free trajectories to the predicted target interactive position. Results for a number of different configurations confirm the efficiency of the proposed motion planning and execution framework, with a 23.2% reduction in execution time achieved for the HRC task compared to an implementation without human motion prediction. GreenRP: Task-Aware Discharge-Resilient Routing for Sustainable Edge AI in Satellite Optical Networks

Research in on-orbit processing enables edge AI deployment over satellite optical networks. However, these operations induce frequent battery discharge cycles, particularly depth-of-discharge (DoD) events, which accelerate degradation and curtail satellite longevity. To address this, we propose green task-aware routing planning (GreenRP), a task-aware routing framework that achieves sustainable edge AI through dynamic task offloading and discharge-resilient path orchestration. GreenRP employs a novel battery aging model explicitly coupling DoD effects with laser inter-satellite link dynamics under AI workloads, enhancing system sustainability. Comprehensive evaluation on a 1152-satellite constellation demonstrates that GreenRP extends network lifetime by 176% over shortest-path routing while meeting latency and completion rate targets. This work enables reliable edge AI via sustainable satellite resource utilization. Full article

Multi-organ medical image segmentation is essential for accurate clinical diagnosis, effective treatment planning, and reliable prognosis, yet it remains challenging due to complex backgrounds, irrelevant noise, unclear organ boundaries, and wide variations in organ size. To address these challenges, the boundary feature learning and enhancement network is proposed. This model integrates a dedicated boundary learning module combined with an auxiliary loss function to strengthen the semantic correlations between boundary pixels and regional features, thus reducing category mis-segmentation. Additionally, channel and positional compound attention mechanisms are employed to selectively filter features and minimize background interference. To further enhance multi-scale representation capabilities, the dynamic scale-aware context module dynamically selects and fuses multi-scale features, significantly improving the model’s adaptability. The model achieves average Dice similarity coefficients of 81.67% on synapse and 90.55% on ACDC datasets, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. This network significantly improves segmentation by emphasizing boundary accuracy, noise reduction, and multi-scale adaptability, enhancing clinical diagnostics and treatment planning. Full article
