Hyperloop ultra-high-speed transport presents a transformative opportunity for future mobility systems in smart cities. However, assessing its socio-economic impact remains challenging due to Hyperloop’s unique technological, modal, and operational characteristics. As a novel, fifth mode of transportation—distinct from both aviation and rail—Hyperloop requires tailored evaluation tools for policymakers. This study proposes a custom-designed framework to quantify its macroeconomic effects through changes in gross domestic product (GDP) at the city level. Unlike traditional economic models, the proposed approach is specifically adapted to Hyperloop’s multimodality, infrastructure, speed profile, and digital-green footprint. A Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML) model is developed and applied at two technology readiness levels (TRL-6 and TRL-9). Case studies of Glasgow, Berlin, and Busan are used to simulate impacts based on geo-spatial features and city-specific trade and accessibility indicators. Results indicate substantial GDP increases driven by factors such as expanded 60 min commute catchment zones, improved trade flows, and connectivity node density. For instance, under TRL-9 conditions, GDP uplift reaches over 260% in certain scenarios. The framework offers a scalable, reproducible tool for policymakers and urban planners to evaluate the economic potential of Hyperloop within the context of sustainable smart city development. Catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis oils is an important step for producing replacement hydrocarbon-rich liquid biofuels from biomass and can help to advance pyrolysis technology. Catalysts play a pivotal role in influencing the selectivity of chemical reactions leading to the formation of main compounds in the final upgraded liquid products. The present work involved a systematic study of solvent-free catalytic reactions of cyclohexanone in the presence of hydrogen gas at 160 °C for 3 h in a batch reactor. Cyclohexanone can be produced from biomass through the selective hydrogenation of lignin-derived phenolics. Three types of catalysts comprising undoped NbOPO4, 10 wt% NiO/NbOPO4, and 30 wt% NiO/NbOPO4 were studied. Undoped NbOPO4 promoted both aldol condensation and the dehydration of cyclohexanol, producing fused ring aromatic hydrocarbons and hard char. With 30 wt% NiO/NbOPO4, extensive competitive hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol was observed, along with the formation of C6 cyclic hydrocarbons. When compared to NbOPO4 and 30 wt% NiO/NbOPO4, the use of 10 wt% NiO/NbOPO4 produced superior selectivity towards bi-cycloalkanones (i.e., C12) at cyclohexanone conversion of 66.8 ± 1.82%. Overall, the 10 wt% NiO/NbOPO4 catalyst exhibited the best performance towards the production of precursor compounds that can be further hydrodeoxygenated into energy-dense aviation fuel hydrocarbons. Hence, the presence and loading of NiO was able to tune the activity and selectivity of NbOPO4, thereby influencing the final products obtained from the same cyclohexanone feedstock. This study underscores the potential of lignin-derived pyrolysis oils as important renewable feedstocks for producing replacement hydrocarbon solvents or feedstocks and high-density sustainable liquid hydrocarbon fuels via sequential and selective catalytic upgrading. In today’s dynamic and highly uncertain environment, organizations, particularly in the aviation sector, face increasing challenges that demand resilient, flexible, and data-driven change management decisions. Responding to the growing need for structured approaches to managing complex uncertainties—geopolitical tensions, economic volatility, social shifts, rapid technological advancements, environmental pressures and regulatory changes—this research proposes a theoretical change management model for aviation service providers, such as airports. Integrating three analytical approaches, the model offers a robust, multi-method approach for supporting sustainable transformation under uncertainty. Normative analysis using Bayesian decision theory identifies influential external environmental factors, capturing probabilistic relationships, and revealing causal links under uncertainty. Prescriptive planning through scenario theory explores alternative future pathways and helps to identify possible predictions, offer descriptive evaluation employing fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, and assess decision quality under vagueness and complexity. The proposed four-stage model—observation, analysis, evaluation, and response—offers a methodology for continuous external environment monitoring, scenario development, and data-driven, proactive change management decision-making, including the impact assessment of change and development. The proposed model contributes to the theoretical advancement of the change management research area under uncertainty and offers practical guidance for aviation organizations (airports) facing a volatile external environment. This framework strengthens aviation organizations’ ability to anticipate, evaluate, and adapt to multifaceted external changes, supporting operational flexibility and adaptability and contributing to the sustainable development of aviation services. Supporting aviation organizations with tools to proactively manage systemic uncertainty, this research directly supports the integration of sustainability principles, such as resilience and adaptability, for long-term value creation through change management decision-making. Civil aviation safety remains a critical concern globally, with continuous efforts aimed at reducing accidents and fatalities. This paper focuses on the comprehensive evaluation of civil aviation safety in the Slovak Republic over the past several years, with the main objective of identifying prevailing trends and key risk factors. A comprehensive analysis of 155 accidents and incidents was conducted based on selected operational parameters. Logistic regression was applied to identify potential causal factors influencing various levels of injury severity in aviation accidents. Moreover, the prediction model can also be used to predict the probability of specific injury severity for accidents with given parameter values. The results indicate a clear declining trend in the annual number of aviation safety events; however, the fatality rate has stagnated or slightly increased in recent years. Human error, particularly mistakes and intentional violations of procedures, was identified as the dominant causal factor across all sectors of civil aviation, including flight operations, airport management, maintenance, and air navigation services. Despite technological advancements and regulatory improvements, human-related failures persist as a major safety challenge. The findings highlight the critical need for targeted strategies to mitigate human error and enhance overall aviation safety in the Slovak Republic. Full article

Review of the Use of Waste Materials in Rigid Airport Pavements: Opportunities, Benefits and Implementation

The aviation industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining safety and performance standards. One promising area for improvement lies in the use of sustainable materials in airport infrastructure. One of the issues preventing uptake of emerging sustainable technologies is the lack of guidance relating to the opportunities, potential benefits, associated risks and an implementation plan specific to airport pavements. This research reviewed opportunities to incorporate waste materials into rigid airport pavements, focusing on concrete base slabs. Commonly used supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) were considered, as well as recycled aggregates, including recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), recycled crushed glass (RCG), and blast furnace slag (BFS). Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) were also used to quantify the potential for environmental benefit associated with various concrete mixtures, with findings showing 23% to 50% reductions in embodied carbon are possible for selected theoretical concrete mixtures that incorporate waste materials. With considered evaluation and structured implementation, the integration of waste materials into rigid airport pavements offers a practical and effective route to improve environmental outcomes in aviation infrastructure. It was concluded that a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework—assessing financial, environmental, and social factors—guides material selection and can support sustainable decision-making, as does performance-based specifications that enable sustainable technologies to be incorporated into airport pavement. The study also proposed a consequence-based implementation hierarchy to facilitate responsible adoption of waste materials in airside pavements. The outcomes of this review will assist airport managers and pavement designers to implement practical changes to achieve more sustainable rigid airport pavements in the future. Full article

As an energy-intensive industry, the aviation sector’s carbon emissions have drawn significant attention. Against the backdrop of the “dual carbon” goals, how to enhance the carbon emission efficiency of airlines has become an urgent issue to be addressed for both industry development and low-carbon targets. This paper constructs an evaluation system for the carbon emission efficiency of airlines and uses the SBM-DDF model under the global production possibility set, combined with the bootstrap-DEA method, to calculate the efficiency values. On this basis, the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method is employed to analyze the synergistic effects of multiple influencing factors in three dimensions: economic benefits, transportation benefits, and energy consumption on improving carbon emission efficiency. The research findings reveal that, first, a single influencing factor does not constitute a necessary condition for achieving high carbon emission efficiency; second, there are four combinations that enhance carbon emission efficiency: “load volume-driven type”, “scale revenue-driven type”, “high ticket price + technology-driven type”, and “passenger and cargo synergy mixed type”. These discoveries are of great significance for promoting the construction of a carbon emission efficiency system by Chinese airlines and achieving high-quality development in the aviation industry. Wireless sensor networks provide a solution for structural health monitoring of aviation pipelines. In the installation environment of aviation pipelines, widespread vibrations can be utilized to extract energy through vibration energy harvesting technology to achieve self-powering of sensors. This study analyzed the vibration characteristics of aviation pipeline structures. The vibration characteristics and influencing factors of typical aviation pipeline structures were obtained through simulations and experiments. An N-shaped symmetric vibration energy harvester was designed considering the limited space in aviation pipeline structures. To improve the efficiency of electrical energy extraction from the vibration energy harvester, expand its operating frequency band, and achieve efficient vibration energy harvesting, this study first analyzed its natural frequency characteristics through theoretical analysis. Finite element simulation software was then used to analyze the effects of the external excitation acceleration direction, mass and combination of counterweights, piezoelectric sheet length, and piezoelectric material placement on the output power of the energy harvester. The structural parameters of the vibration energy harvester were optimized, and the optimal working conditions were determined. The experimental results indicate that the N-shaped symmetric vibration energy harvester designed and optimized in this study improves the efficiency of vibration energy harvesting and can be arranged in the limited space of aviation pipeline structures. It achieves efficient energy harvesting under multi-modal conditions, different excitation directions, and a wide operating frequency band, thus meeting the practical application requirement and engineering feasibility of aircraft design. Altitude Test Facility (ATF) compressor systems are widely used in aero-engine tests. These systems achieve the control of gas pressure and transport through complex operation processes. With advancements in the aviation industry, there is a growing demand for higher performance, greater safety, and more energy efficiency in digital ATF systems. Hybrid modeling is a technology that combines many methods and can meet these requirements. The Modular Dynamic System Greitzer (MDSG) compressor model, including mechanistic and data-driven modeling approaches, is combined with a neural network to obtain a BPNN-MDSG hybrid modeling method for the digital turbine system. The digital simulation is linked with the physical sensors of the ATF system to realize real-time simulation and monitoring. The steady and dynamic conditions of the actual system are simulated in virtual space. Compared with the actual results, the average error of steady mass flow is less than 3%, and the error of pressure is less than 1%. The average error of dynamic mass flow is less than 5%, and the error of pressure is less than 3%. The simulation and characteristic predictions are carried out in BPNN-MDSG virtual space. The anti-surge characteristics of the ATF system under start-up conditions are obtained. The full-condition anti-surge operation map of the system is obtained, which provides guidance for the actual operation of the ATF system. Full article

To address the technical bottlenecks of low path planning efficiency and insufficient point cloud coverage in the automated 3D scanning of complex structural components, this study proposes an offline method for the generation and optimization of scanning paths based on CAD models. Discrete sampling of the model’s surface is achieved through the construction of an oriented bounding box (OBB) and a linear object–triangular mesh intersection algorithm, thereby obtaining a discrete point set of the model. Incorporating a standard vector analysis of the discrete points and the kinematic constraints of the scanning system, a scanner pose parameter calculation model is established. An improved nearest neighbor search algorithm is employed to generate a globally optimized scanning path, and an adaptive B-spline interpolation algorithm is applied to path smoothing. A joint MATLAB (R2023b)—RobotStudio (6.08) simulation platform is developed to facilitate the entire process, from model pre-processing and path planning to path verification. The experimental results demonstrate that compared with the traditional manual teaching methods, the proposed approach achieves a 25.4% improvement in scanning efficiency and an 18.6% increase in point cloud coverage when measuring typical complex structural components. This study offers an intelligent solution for the efficient and accurate measurement of large-scale complex parts and holds significant potential for broad engineering applications. Full article

To address the issue of coating accumulation model failure in unstable environments, this paper proposes a dynamic control method based on visual differential feedback. An image difference model is constructed through online image data modeling and real-time reference image feedback, enabling real-time correction of the coating accumulation model. Firstly, by combining the Arrhenius equation and the Hagen–Poiseuille equation, it is demonstrated that pressure regulation and temperature changes are equivalent under dataset establishment conditions, thereby reducing data collection costs. Secondly, online paint mist image acquisition and processing technology enables real-time modeling, overcoming the limitations of traditional offline methods. This approach reduces modeling time to less than 4 min, enhancing real-time parameter adjustability. Thirdly, an image difference model employing a CNN + MLP structure, combined with feature fusion and optimization strategies, achieved high prediction accuracy: R2 > 0.999, RMSE < 0.79 kPa, and σe < 0.74 kPa on the test set for paint A; and R2 > 0.997, RMSE < 0.67 kPa, and σe < 0.66 kPa on the test set for aviation paint B. The results show that the model can achieve good dynamic regulation for both types of typical aviation paint used in the experiment: high-viscosity polyurethane enamel (paint A, viscosity 22 s at 25 °C) and epoxy polyamide primer (paint B, viscosity 18 s at 25 °C). In summary, the image difference model can achieve dynamic regulation of the coating accumulation model in unstable environments, ensuring the stability of the coating accumulation model. This technology can be widely applied in industrial spraying scenarios with high requirements for coating uniformity and stability, especially in occasions with significant fluctuations in environmental parameters or complex process conditions, and has important engineering application value. Approximately 20% of emissions from air travel are attributed to the auxiliary power units (APUs) carried in commercial aircraft. This paper proposes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in international air transport by adopting proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells to replace APUs in commercial aircraft: we consider the design of three compressed hydrogen storage vessels made of 304 stainless steel, 6061-T6 aluminium, and Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium and capable of delivering 440 kW—enough for a PEM fuel cell for a Boeing 777. Complete structural analyses for pressures from 35 MPa to 70 MPa and wall thicknesses of 25, 50, 100, and 150 mm are used to determine the optimal material for aviation applications. Key factors such as deformation, safety factors, and Von Mises equivalent stress are evaluated to ensure structural integrity under a range of operating conditions. In addition, CO2 emissions from a conventional 440 kW gas turbine APU and an equivalent PEM fuel cell are compared. This study provides insights into optimal material selection for compressed hydrogen storage vessels, emphasising safety, reliability, cost, and weight reduction. Ultimately, this research aims to facilitate the adoption of fuel cell technology in aviation, contributing to greenhouse emissions reduction and hence sustainable air transport. Full article

Addressing the urgent need for lightweight and reusable energy-absorbing materials in aviation impact resistance, this study introduces an innovative multi-directional braided metamaterial design enabled by 4D printing technology. This approach overcomes the dual challenges of intricate manufacturing processes and the limited functionality inherent to traditional textile preforms. Six distinct braided structural units (types 1–6) were devised based on periodic trigonometric functions (Y = A sin(12πX)), and integrated with shape memory polylactic acid (SMP-PLA), thereby achieving a synergistic combination of topological architecture and adaptive response characteristics. Compression tests reveal that reducing strip density to 50–25% (as in types 1–3) markedly enhances energy absorption performance, achieving a maximum specific energy absorption of 3.3 J/g. Three-point bending tests further demonstrate that the yarn amplitude parameter A is inversely correlated with load-bearing capacity; for instance, the type 1 structure (A = 3) withstands a maximum load stress of 8 MPa, representing a 100% increase compared to the type 2 structure (A = 4.5). A multi-branch viscoelastic constitutive model elucidates the temperature-dependent stress relaxation behavior during the glass–rubber phase transition and clarifies the relaxation time conversion mechanism governed by the Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF) and Arrhenius equations. Experimental results further confirm the shape memory effect, with the type 3 structure fully recovering its original shape within 3 s under thermal stimulation at 80 °C, thus addressing the non-reusability issue of conventional energy-absorbing structures. This work establishes a new paradigm for the design of impact-resistant aviation components, particularly in the context of anti-collision structures and reusable energy absorption systems for eVTOL aircraft. Future research should further investigate the regulation of multi-stimulus response behaviors and microstructural optimization to advance the engineering application of smart textile metamaterials in aviation protection systems. Recent technological advancements have resulted in the emergence of portable electronic devices (PEDs), including mobile phones equipped with satellite communication capabilities. These devices generally emit higher power, which can potentially cause electromagnetic interference to GPS antennas. This study uses both simulation and experimental methods to evaluate the interference path loss (IPL) between PEDs located inside an A320 aircraft and an external GPS antenna. The effects of PED location, antenna polarization, and frequency bands on IPL were simulated and analyzed. Additionally, measurement experiments were conducted on an A320 aircraft, and statistical methods were used to compare the experimental data with the simulation results. Considering the front-door coupling of both spurious and intentional radiated emissions, the measured IPL is up to 15 ± 3 dB lower than the IPLtarget. This result should be interpreted with caution. This issue offers new insights into the potential risks of electromagnetic interference in aviation environments. The findings help quantify the probability of interference with GPS antennas. Furthermore, the modeling simplification method used in this study may be applicable to the analysis of other large and complex structures. Full article

Photochemical Ozone Production Along Flight Trajectories in the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere and Route Optimisation

Aviation is widely recognised to have global-scale climate impacts through the formation of ozone (O3) in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS), driven by emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX). Ozone is known to be one of the most potent greenhouse gases formed from the interaction of aircraft emission plumes with atmospheric species. This paper follows up on previous research, where a Photochemical Trajectory Model was shown to be a robust measure of ozone formation along flight trajectories post-flight. We use a combination of a global Lagrangian chemistry-transport model and a box model to quantify the impacts of aircraft NOX on UTLS ozone over a five-day timescale. This work expands on the spatial and temporal range, as well as the chemical accuracy reported previously, with a greater range of NOX chemistry relevant chemical species. Based on these models, route optimisation has been investigated, through the use of network theory and algorithms. This is to show the potential inclusion of an understanding of climate-sensitive regions of the atmosphere on route planning can have on aviation’s impact on Earth’s Thermal Radiation balance with existing resources and technology. Optimised flight trajectories indicated reductions in O3 formation per unit NOX are in the range 1–40% depending on the spatial aspect of the flight. Temporally, local winter times and equatorial regions are generally found to have the most significant O3 formation per unit NOX; moreover, hotspots were found over the Pacific and Indian Ocean. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) are currently considered a key element in the decarbonization of the aviation sector, offering a feasible solution to reduce life cycle greenhouse gas emissions without requiring fundamental changes in aircraft or infrastructure. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of SAFs, including their classification, production technologies, economic aspects, and environmental performance. The analysis covers both currently certified SAF pathways, such as HEFA and FT-SPK, and emerging technologies like alcohol-to-jet and power-to-liquid, assessing their technological maturity, feedstock availability, and scalability. Economic challenges related to high production costs, investment risks, and policy dependencies are discussed, alongside potential mechanisms to support market deployment. Furthermore, the article reviews SAFs’ emission performance, including CO2 and non-CO2 effects, based on existing life cycle assessment (LCA) studies, with an emphasis on variability caused by feedstock type and production method. The findings highlight that, while SAFs can significantly reduce aviation-related emissions compared to fossil jet fuels, the magnitude of benefits depends strongly on supply chain design and sustainability criteria. There are various certified pathways for SAF production, as well as new technologies that can further contribute to the development of the industry. Properly selected biomass sources and production technologies can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70% compared to conventional fuels. The implementation of SAFs faces obstacles related to cost, infrastructure, and regulations, which hinder its widespread adoption. The study concludes that although SAFs represent a promising pathway for aviation climate mitigation, substantial scaling efforts, regulatory support, and continued technological innovation are essential to achieve their full potential.
