The uptake of the COVID-19 and seasonal influenza (SI) vaccines have decreased in Europe and especially in Malta. The present study aimed to investigate the attitudes toward COVID-19 and SI vaccines and determine if individuals perceive that these vaccines are relevant to protect their health and identify reasons for their responses. A cross-sectional study using an anonymous questionnaire, informed by the Theory of Planned Behavior, addressing behavior beliefs and attitudes, and targeted at adult residents in Malta, was designed on Google Forms and disseminated using social media between January and March 2024. A total of 555 responses were received. The majority of respondents did not take/intend to take the COVID-19 (75%, n = 417) or SI (64.3%, n = 362) vaccines, with females being less likely to do so (p = 0.033). Perceived lack of safety (31.3%, n = 174) was the primary reason for rejecting the COVID-19 vaccine, and perceived lack of a threat from SI (26%, n = 144) was the reason for rejecting the SI vaccine. Those having chronic conditions were positively associated with uptake of both vaccines. In the post-pandemic era, these vaccines are not envisaged as having a major role in protecting one’s health. A high degree of skepticism especially toward the combined COVID-19 and SI vaccine in terms of safety, mostly in women, is still present. Full article

The rapid rebound of global tourism post-pandemic has intensified pressure on destinations like Istanbul and Athens, bringing overtourism debates into sharp focus. This study examined how five sustainability dimensions (economic, environmental, sociocultural, political, technological) shape residents’ overtourism perceptions and tourism support. Using PLS-SEM analysis of 285 long-term residents’ responses, this study reveals contrasting patterns between cities. In Athens, heightened awareness of environmental, economic, and sociocultural sustainability directly increases overtourism perceptions, subsequently reducing tourism support. Istanbul presents a counterpoint: environmental sustainability concerns alleviate overtourism perceptions, though without significant impact on tourism backing. Notably, political and technological dimensions show no statistically significant effects in either context. These findings demonstrate how sustainability perceptions are locally mediated, with identical factors producing divergent outcomes across cultural contexts. The study advances sustainable tourism literature by: (1) empirically validating context-dependent variations in resident attitudes, and (2) proposing a community-centered evaluation framework for policymakers. Recent study emphasizes the necessity of destination-specific strategies that prioritize residents’ nuanced sustainability concerns over generic tourism management approaches. Full article

With the rapid digital transformation of healthcare services in India, this study investigates the factors influencing the behavioral shift from traditional hospital visits to e-health consultations. The primary objective was to analyze patient attitudes, satisfaction, and perceived barriers to adopting virtual healthcare, especially in urban and semi-urban settings. Methods: The methodology adopted in the study was descriptive, and a convenience sampling technique was used for data collection because the feasible times of the patients’ availabilities were taken into consideration for data collection. Both primary and secondary data were collected using questionnaires and literature. A sample size of 385 participants was used in this study. Various statistical tools, such as frequency, ANOVA, and Chi-square tests, were used to test the hypotheses. Results: It was observed from ANOVA and Chi-square tests that the factors for switching from traditional consultation to e-health services have a positive association. It was found that integrating data through influencing factors significantly (p < 0.001) improved decisions on e-health services. Conclusion: This study highlights the shift from in-person to e-health consultations driven by convenience, flexibility, and pandemic-related needs while acknowledging barriers such as digital literacy, infrastructure gaps, and trust issues. It recommends strategies, such as secure platforms, training, and integrated care models, for a more inclusive digital health future. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly altered consumer habits, particularly in relation to food choices. In this context, plant-based diets have gained prominence, driven by health, environmental, and ethical considerations. This study investigates the primary motivational and inhibitory factors influencing the consumption of plant-based foods among residents of the Galicia–Northern Portugal Euroregion. Utilizing the Theory of Reasoned Action, an extended model was proposed and tested through a quantitative survey. A total of 214 valid responses were collected via an online questionnaire distributed in Portuguese and Spanish. Linear regression analysis revealed that health awareness, animal welfare, and environmental concern significantly shape positive attitudes, which subsequently affect the intention to consume plant-based foods. Additionally, perceived barriers—such as lack of taste and insufficient information—were found to negatively influence intention. These findings contribute to the consumer behavior literature and provide strategic insights for stakeholders aiming to promote more sustainable dietary patterns in culturally connected cross-border regions. The realities of the COVID-19 pandemic and the decision to control it through a worldwide vaccination programme brought to the forefront the debates about people’s attitudes towards vaccines and vaccination in general, and people’s attitude towards COVID-19 vaccines and vaccination, in particular. This study focuses on trust in hospitals, as a predictor of Romanians’ hesitancy towards vaccination. The study utilizes a longitudinal approach, examining data from two distinct periods: 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic; and 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings show that the COVID-19 pandemic has altered public attitudes towards vaccination and may also have compromised the link, considered implicit before the pandemic, between the level of trust in the medical system and favorable attitudes towards vaccination. Background: Infection control is fundamental in dental practice, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the variability in students’ adherence to disinfection protocols. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the fifth-year dental students at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens regarding antisepsis and infection control, and to assess the effectiveness of an educational intervention. Methods: A pre-post interventional study was conducted involving two in-person seminars, supplementary e-learning material, and a structured questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. The survey assessed the knowledge, clinical practices, and attitudes toward infection control, including vaccination history and prior exposure incidents. Results: The intervention led to statistically significant improvements in infection control knowledge, especially in risk-based sterilization strategies, disinfectant classification, and PPE use. Students with prior hepatitis B vaccinations and antibody testing demonstrated higher baseline scores and more significant knowledge gains. However, some misconceptions, particularly regarding surface disinfection and prosthetic care, persisted after the intervention. Conclusions: The findings support the effectiveness of structured educational interventions in improving infection control awareness among dental students. Practical, simulation-based training and earlier curriculum integration are recommended to enhance compliance and ensure safe clinical practice. Full article

Given the ubiquity of anti-fat prejudice, in this experimental study, we tested whether weight gain attributed to COVID-19 would influence evaluations of overweight male and female targets. Female participants (N = 160) were randomly assigned to read one of four mock medical forms that outlined distractor medical information (e.g., blood requisition results), the sex of the target (male vs. female) and stated reason for weight gain (unhealthy lifestyle choices vs. inactivity due to the COVID-19 lockdown). Participants evaluated the patient on a series of binary adjectives (e.g., lazy/industrious), and completed measures assessing anti-fat attitudes (i.e., fear of becoming fat and belief in the controllability of weight), internalization of ideal standards of appearance, and BMI (i.e., self-reported weight and height). Contrary to our predictions, we found that overweight male and female patients were evaluated similarly regardless of whether their weight gain was attributable to unhealthy lifestyle choices or inactivity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, believing that one’s weight is controllable and internalizing general standards of attractiveness correlated positively with fat disparagement of the medical patients. Participants’ BMI and fear of fat, however, were negligibly related to fat disparagement. Possible explanations for our findings, implications for healthcare settings, and directions for future research are explored. Full article

Awareness about the attitudes towards the vaccination of persons with schizophrenia is essential, as this group has a greater likelihood of experiencing serious consequences if infected with COVID-19 or other infectious processes. For this reason, 141 persons with schizophrenia completed a survey addressing different aspects of receiving the vaccine for COVID-19. In general, the results are similar to those of people without a severe mental disorder. Persons with schizophrenia were willing to get vaccinated, perceived vaccination as being as safe and effective as the general population did, and reported that they usually followed preventive measures to avoid the spread of the virus. However, their concerns were frequently related to possible health problems or fears about the vaccination. There is no influence from sociodemographic variables, though limited social life, perceived risk in people in their immediate environment, and a negative self-assessment of their own health were associated with increased acceptance of vaccination. Thus, the present study provides useful information on this topic and encourages the development of programs and interventions that promote preventive actions for this group of people. Full article

Understanding consumer heterogeneity is crucial for analysing attitude formation and its role in innovation diffusion. Traditional top-down models struggle to reflect the nuanced characteristics and activities of the consumer population, while bottom-up approaches like agent-based modelling (ABM) offer the ability to simulate individual decision-making in social networks. However, current ABM applications often lack a strong theoretical foundation. This study introduces a novel, theory-driven ABM framework to examine the heterogeneity of consumer attitude formation, focusing on electric vehicle (EV) adoption across consumer segments. The model incorporates non-linear decision-making rules grounded in established consumer theories, incorporating Rogers’s Diffusion of Innovations, Social Influence Theory, and Theory of Planned Behaviour. The consumer agents are characterised using UK empirical data, and are segmented into early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. Social interactions and attitude formation are simulated, micro-validated, and optimised using supervised machine learning (SML) approaches. The results reveal that early adopters and early majority are highly responsive to social influences, environmental beliefs, and external events such as the pandemic and the war conflict in performing pro-EV attitudes. In contrast, late majority and laggards show more stable or delayed responses. These findings provide actionable insights for targeting segments to enhance EV adoption strategies. Full article

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for digital tools that support public health decision-making and behavior change. Dashboards became a primary method for communicating infectious disease data. However, their influence on preventive health behaviors (PHBs) is not well understood—especially among young adults. This group is less likely to adhere to PHBs, but highly familiar with online tools. Methods: Two experimental studies were conducted with young adult participants (200 in Study 1, 228 in Study 2) who viewed the same COVID-19 data in dashboards with or without actionable components. Participants were randomly assigned to different dashboard conditions to measure, on seven-point Likert scales, their PHB intentions and perceptions of behavioral control, attitudes, norms, and risk. The actionable dashboard interventions, designed using the theory of planned behavior, included dynamic behavioral guidance and risk level visualizations. Results: Actionable dashboards versus basic dashboards significantly increased PHB intentions (B = 0.84, p < 0.001, Study 1). Dynamic behavioral guidance was the key dashboard component influencing PHB intentions (B = 0.61, p = 0.005, Study 2). Parallel mediation analysis testing norms, attitudes, behavioral control, and perceived risk against one another found that only norms explained the link between the dashboard intervention and PHB intentions (Bboot = 0.18 and 0.19). Conclusions: Findings suggest that actionable dashboards can effectively promote PHB by influencing psychosocial beliefs. These dashboards provide context and guidance, making risky situations more manageable and directing individuals to appropriate preventive actions. Public health professionals should consider incorporating behavioral guidance into community health dashboards to improve their effectiveness. Full article

Scarce research on inbound tourism has focused on local residents’ attitudes toward inbound tourism, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. This study combines social identity theory and emotional solidarity theory to explore Chinese residents’ attitudes toward inbound tourism. In particular, we explore two types of social identities (cultural and environmental identities, termed “humanistic environmental identity” in this study) and three factors of local residents’ emotional solidarity (welcoming nature, emotional closeness, and sympathetic understanding toward inbound tourists). Based on a survey of 310 local residents in Yangzhou, China, this study finds that local residents’ humanistic environmental identity significantly affects their emotional solidarity with inbound tourists, which significantly influences their acceptance of inbound tourism; this, in turn, increases their support for inbound tourism. Meanwhile, local residents’ humanistic environmental identity has an indirect effect on their support for inbound tourism through their welcoming nature, emotional closeness, sympathetic understanding, and acceptance of inbound tourism. In addition, local residents’ xenophobia significantly moderates the relationships between humanistic environmental identity and emotional closeness, between humanistic environmental identity and sympathetic understanding, and between emotional closeness and local residents’ acceptance of inbound tourism. This study extends research on factors affecting inbound tourism from the perspectives of local residents. Full article

Examining public attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination is crucial for understanding the global effort to combat the ongoing pandemic. Social media platforms such as YouTube play a significant role in the dissemination of information and misinformation about the vaccine, making it imperative to analyze user comments to gain insights into vaccine perceptions. Analyzing the Philippines case is particularly significant as it provides insights into the attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination in a country that has been heavily impacted by the pandemic. The current study investigates the discourse surrounding vaccine hesitancy in comments on YouTube videos announcing the COVID-19 vaccination campaign by the Philippines national TV channels and its impact on engagement levels. A total of 741 YouTube comments were analyzed, with 80% exhibiting vaccine-hesitant related discourse. The results indicate that those with negative attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination exhibit higher engagement levels than those supporting vaccination (p < 0.05). Additionally, the most commonly used themes in vaccine-hesitant posts were “ingredients”, “health department control”, “pharmaceutical interest”, and “adverse effects”. Moreover, 134 sources were identified among the posts, with vaccine-hesitant posts utilizing more sources than supportive vaccine posts (p < 0.001). The most significant information sources utilized in the posts were related to other YouTube users, politicians, clinicians, and scientific papers. Finally, a total of 890 discourses were coded, with the most frequently used discourse types among vaccine-hesitant posts being negationist, institutional, preventive, political, and pharmaceutical. These findings offer valuable insights into the nature and prevalence of vaccine hesitancy discourse on social media platforms and its impact on public engagement. This study highlights the importance of targeted communication strategies and the provision of accurate information from reliable sources in addressing vaccine hesitancy. Full article

Psychological theory often reminds us that the best predictor of an individual’s future behavior is their prior behavior. Then, the pandemic happened in 2020, and at least for travel behavior and tourism consumption, everything seemed to change, stressing the importance of re-evaluating predictors. In the present study, we aimed to compare the history of travel behavior and tourism consumption with the predicted travel behavior of students coming from Generation Z, along with intrapersonal characteristics influencing risk perception, like psychological resilience and perceived invulnerability. The findings revealed that the pandemic changed the attitude towards travel for tourism-related purposes in both positive and negative directions, restructuring the attitude towards travel for the majority and also revealing many new prospective travelers. Psychological resilience was a significant variable that differentiated the respondents who changed their attitude towards tourism from those who remained consistent in their non-travel behavior and students who planned to travel more during the pandemic. Although subsamples also differed in the mean value of perceived invulnerability, the variable did not prove statistically significant. Almost 50% of the students predicting that they will travel abroad for non-tourism-related purposes in the future year were students who had not traveled abroad before the pandemic. Full article

Background/Objectives: Vaccine hesitancy has increased during the coronavirus pandemic, a period marked by the spread of disinformation and conspiracy theories about COVID-19 vaccines. This qualitative study aimed to explore the beliefs and attitudes of Spaniards towards COVID-19 vaccines and analyze the role of information sources in this process. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 35 residents of Spain who exhibited varying levels of vaccine hesitancy. Through thematic content analysis, the narratives supporting vaccination-related decisions, as well as the influence and trust in information sources, were examined. Results: Reasons for getting vaccinated included perceptions of it being “almost an obligation” and “fear of illness and death”. Conversely, reasons for not getting vaccinated included “uncertainty about vaccines”, the belief that “the risk is not real”, and the perception that “vaccination is a personal decision”. Regarding vaccine-related information sources, interviewees expressed distrust of the media, particularly television, as they considered news about vaccine effectiveness and characteristics to be contradictory and constantly changing, which created uncertainty about its reliability. Most interviewees were unsure if social media influenced their decision not to get vaccinated. However, those who acknowledged its impact mentioned trusting sources such as people with a university education. Additionally, close contacts—particularly healthcare professionals—had a significant influence on the decision not to get vaccinated. Conclusions: This study shows that the decision not to vaccinate is shaped by personal beliefs and sources of information—particularly social media and close acquaintances, including healthcare professionals. Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices, and Perceived Usability of Respirators Among Thai Healthcare Personnel During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Background: Respirators are essential for protecting healthcare personnel (HCPs) from airborne infections, and were particularly valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, knowledge gaps, attitudes, and perceived usability issues may hinder their proper use, especially in settings lacking formal respiratory protection programs. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes, practices (KAP), and perceived usability of respirators among Thai healthcare personnel at a university hospital in Northern Thailand and identify differences across job roles. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among HCPs at a university hospital in Northern Thailand. Participants completed a validated questionnaire covering demographic data, KAP, and perceived usability of respirators. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze group differences. Results: A total of 479 valid responses were analyzed from physicians (31.7%), nurses (37.6%), and other HCPs (30.7%). Only around 12% of all participants correctly identified that surgical masks are not respirators, although over 90% correctly identified the nature of N95/KN95-type filtering facepiece respirators. Nurses demonstrated higher knowledge of respirator standards and proper use. Confidence and willingness to use industrial or reprocessed sterile respirators varied significantly by role (p < 0.05). Only 30.5% had received fit-testing. Perceived usability concerns included discomfort, heat, and breathability, reported across all groups. Conclusions: Knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to respirator use varied by professional role, with notable gaps in fit-testing and perceived usability. Findings highlight the need for targeted training, consistent fit-testing protocols, and improved respirator design for comfort to ensure effective respiratory protection in healthcare settings.
