The high-proportion integration of renewable energy sources, represented by wind power and photovoltaics, into active distribution networks (ADNs) can effectively alleviate the pressure associated with advancing China’s dual-carbon goals. However, the high uncertainty in renewable energy output leads to increased system voltage fluctuations and localized voltage violations, posing safety challenges. Consequently, research on optimal dispatch for ADNs with a high penetration of renewable energy has become a current focal point. This paper provides a comprehensive review of research in this domain over the past decade. Initially, it analyzes the voltage impact patterns and control principles in distribution networks under varying levels of renewable energy penetration. Subsequently, it introduces optimization dispatch models for ADNs that focus on three key objectives: safety, economy, and low carbon emissions. Furthermore, addressing the challenge of solving non-convex and nonlinear models, the paper highlights model reformulation strategies such as semidefinite relaxation, second-order cone relaxation, and convex inner approximation methods, along with summarizing relevant intelligent solution algorithms. Additionally, in response to the high uncertainty of renewable energy output, it reviews stochastic optimization dispatch strategies for ADNs, encompassing single-stage, two-stage, and multi-stage approaches. Meanwhile, given the promising prospects of large-scale deep reinforcement learning models in the power sector, their applications in ADN optimization dispatch are also reviewed. Finally, the paper outlines potential future research directions for ADN optimization dispatch. Full article

Objectives: To investigate how the FLASH effect modulates radiation response on multiple developmental endpoints of zebrafish embryos under normoxic and hypoxic conditions, after irradiation with proton beams at a conventional and an ultra-high dose rate (UHDR). Methods: Embryos were obtained from adult zebrafish and irradiated with a 228 MeV proton beam 24 h post-fertilization (hpf) at a dose rate of 0.6 and 317 Gy/s. For the hypoxic group, samples were kept inside a hypoxic chamber prior to irradiation, while standard incubation was adopted for the normoxic group. After irradiation, images of single embryos were acquired, and radiation effects on larval length, yolk absorption, pericardial edema, head size, eye size, and spinal curvature were assessed at specific time points. Results: Data indicate a general trend of significantly reduced toxicity after exposure to a UHDR compared to conventional regimes, which is maintained under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Differences are significant for the levels of pericardial edema induced by a UHDR versus conventional irradiation in normoxic conditions, and for eye and head size in hypoxic conditions. The toxicity scoring analysis shows a tendency toward a protective effect of the UHDR, which appears to be associated with a lower percentage of embryos in the high score categories. Conclusions: A radioprotective effect at a UHDR is observed both for normoxic (pericardial edema) and hypoxic (head and eye size) conditions. These results suggest that while the UHDR may preserve a potential to reduce radiation-induced damage, its protective effects are endpoint-dependent; the role of oxygenation might also be dependent on the tissue involved. The relationship between temperature and mortality is well-documented, yet most existing studies assume this relationship remains static over time. This study investigates whether the temperature-mortality association in Chicago from 1987 to 2000 has changed in shape or location of key features, such as change points. We apply nonparametric regression techniques to estimate the temperature-mortality functions for each year using daily mortality and temperature data from the National Morbidity, Mortality, and Air Pollution Study (NMMAPS) database. A permutation-based test is used to assess whether the shapes of these functions differ across time, while a bootstrap procedure evaluates the consistency of change points. Intensive simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the permutation-based test and bootstrap procedure based on Type I error and power. The proposed tests are compared with F tests in terms of Type I error and power. For the real data set, the analysis finds significant variation in the functional shapes across years, indicating evolving mortality responses to temperature. However, the estimated change points—temperatures associated with peak mortality—remain statistically consistent. These findings suggest that while the population’s overall vulnerability pattern may shift, the temperature threshold linked to maximum mortality has remained stable. This study contributes to understanding the temporal dynamics of climate-sensitive health outcomes and highlights the importance of flexible modeling in public health and climate adaptation planning. Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) frequently occurs following major liver resection, adversely affecting both short- and long-term outcomes. This study aimed to determine the incidence of AKI post-hepatectomy and identify relevant pre- and intraoperative risk factors. Our secondary objectives were to develop a predictive score for postoperative AKI and assess the associations between AKI, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and 1-year mortality. Methods: This was a retrospective study in a cancer referral center in Marseille, France, from 2018 to 2022. Results: Among 169 patients, 55 (32.5%) experienced AKI. Multivariate analysis revealed several independent risk factors for postoperative AKI, including age, body mass index, the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers, time to liver resection, intraoperative shock, and bile duct reconstruction. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was protective. The AKIMEBO score was developed, with a threshold of ≥15.6, demonstrating a sensitivity of 89.5%, specificity of 76.4%, positive predictive value of 61.8%, and negative predictive value of 94.4%. AKI was associated with increased postoperative morbidity and one-year mortality following major hepatectomy. Conclusion: AKI is a common complication post-hepatectomy. Factors such as time to liver resection and intraoperative shock management present potential clinical intervention points. The AKIMEBO score can provide a valuable tool for postoperative risk stratification. Full article

This essay provides a fine-grained analysis of selected passages of Giulio Aleni (艾儒略 1582–1649)’s translation of Catholic liturgy into classical Chinese in late imperial China. It focuses on the hitherto underexplored relationships between Aleni’s resort to medieval Aristotelianism and Thomism, as well as his translation-based introduction of Catholic Eucharistic theology into China. The case studies here revolve around Aleni’s Chinese translation of Aristotelian-Thomistic hylomorphism, with a focus on his interpretation of “anima” (i.e., the soul, which corresponds largely to linghun 靈魂 in Chinese), which is a multifaceted Western concept that pertains simultaneously to Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy and Eucharistic theology. It is argued that in his overarching project of introducing Western learnings (i.e., 西學) to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century China, Aleni’s attention is centered primarily on the body-soul and form-matter relationship. This is, as understood here, motivated to a great extent by his scholarly awareness that properly informing Chinese Catholics of the Aristotelian-Thomistic underpinning of Western metaphysics enacts an indispensable role in introducing Catholic liturgy into China, notably the mystery of the Eucharist and Transubstantiation that would not have been effectively introduced to China without having the Western philosophical underpinnings already made available to Chinese intellectuals. Aleni’s use of medieval European cultural legacy thus requires more in-depth analysis vis-à-vis his translational poetics in China. Accordingly, the intellectual and liturgical knowledge in Aleni’s Chinese œuvres shall be investigated associatively, and the medievalism embodied by Aleni offers a valid entry point and productive critical prism. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are central to food, feed, and health biotechnology, yet their genomes have long resisted rapid, precise manipulation. This review charts the evolution of LAB genome-editing strategies from labor-intensive RecA-dependent double-crossovers to state-of-the-art CRISPR and CRISPR-associated transposase systems. Native homologous recombination, transposon mutagenesis, and phage-derived recombineering opened the door to targeted gene disruption, but low efficiencies and marker footprints limited throughput. Recent phage RecT/RecE-mediated recombineering and CRISPR/Cas counter-selection now enable scar-less point edits, seamless deletions, and multi-kilobase insertions at efficiencies approaching model organisms. Endogenous Cas9 systems, dCas-based CRISPR interference, and CRISPR-guided transposases further extend the toolbox, allowing multiplex knockouts, precise single-base mutations, conditional knockdowns, and payloads up to 10 kb. The remaining hurdles include strain-specific barriers, reliance on selection markers for large edits, and the limited host-range of recombinases. Nevertheless, convergence of phage enzymes, CRISPR counter-selection and high-throughput oligo recombineering is rapidly transforming LAB into versatile chassis for cell-factory and therapeutic applications. Understanding groundwater and surface water interaction is critical for managing water resources, particularly in water-stressed and rapidly urbanizing areas, such as many parts of Africa. A survey was conducted of borehole, spring, seep and river water radon, δ2H, δ18O and field parameters in the Jukskei River catchment, Johannesburg. Average values of electrical conductivity (EC) were 274 and 411 μS·cm−1 for groundwater and surface water, and similarly for radon, 37,000 and 1100 Bq·m−3, with a groundwater high of 196,000 Bq·m−3 associated with a structural lineament. High radon was a good indicator of baseflow, highest at the end of the rainy season (March) and lowest at the end of the dry season (September), with the FINIFLUX model computing groundwater inflow as 2.5–4.7 L·m−1s−1. High EC was a poorer indicator of baseflow, also considering the possibility of wastewater with high EC, typical in urban areas. Groundwater δ2H and δ18O values are spread widely, suggesting recharge from both normal and unusual rainfall periods. A slight shift from the local meteoric water line indicates light evaporation during recharge. Surface water δ2H and δ18O is clustered, pointing to regular groundwater input along the stream, supporting the findings from radon. Given the importance of groundwater, further study using the same parameters or additional analytes is advisable in the urban area of Johannesburg or other cities. Full article

Demand Side Management (DSM) plays a crucial role in modern energy systems, enabling more efficient use of energy resources and contributing to the sustainability of the power grid. This study examines DSM strategies within a multi-environment context encompassing residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, with a focus on diverse appliance types that exhibit distinct operational characteristics and user preferences. Initially, a single-objective optimization approach using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) is employed to minimize the total energy cost under a real Time-of-Use (ToU) pricing scheme. This heuristic method allows for the effective scheduling of appliance operations while factoring in their unique characteristics such as power consumption, usage duration, and user-defined operational flexibility. This study extends the optimization problem to a multi-objective framework that incorporates the minimization of CO2 emissions under a real annual energy mix while also accounting for user discomfort. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) is utilized for this purpose, providing a Pareto-optimal set of solutions that balances these competing objectives. The inclusion of multiple objectives ensures a comprehensive assessment of DSM strategies, aiming to reduce environmental impact and enhance user satisfaction. Additionally, this study monitors the Peak-to-Average Ratio (PAR) to evaluate the impact of DSM strategies on load balancing and grid stability. It also analyzes the impact of considering different periods of the year with the associated ToU hourly schedule and CO2 emissions hourly profile. A key innovation of this research is the integration of detailed, category-specific metrics that enable the disaggregation of costs, emissions, and user discomfort across residential, commercial, and industrial appliances. This granularity enables stakeholders to implement tailored strategies that align with specific operational goals and regulatory compliance. Also, the emphasis on a user discomfort indicator allows us to explore the flexibility available in such DSM mechanisms. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-objective optimization approach in achieving significant cost savings that may reach 20% for industrial applications, while the order of magnitude of the trade-offs involved in terms of emissions reduction, improvement in discomfort, and PAR reduction is quantified for different frameworks. The outcomes not only underscore the efficacy of applying advanced optimization frameworks to real-world problems but also point to pathways for future research in smart energy management. This comprehensive analysis highlights the potential of advanced DSM techniques to enhance the sustainability and resilience of energy systems while also offering valuable policy implications. Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare, genetically heterogeneous disorder that impairs mucociliary clearance and leads to progressive lung disease. This study aimed to characterize lung function decline in a genetically homogeneous cohort of Puerto Rican patients with RSPH4A-associated PCD and to develop a clinical tool to predict lung function decline and support transplant referral decisions. We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients (n = 25) with a confirmed RSPH4A [c.921+3_6delAAGT] genetic variant, collecting longitudinal spirometry data and applying linear regressions to calculate each patient’s individual FEV1 decline. The median FEV1 at diagnosis was 55%, with a median annual decline of −0.75% predicted. Adults exhibited significantly lower lung function compared to pediatric patients, while no difference was seen between males and females. Based on this observed decline, we developed the Predicted Capacity Decline Index (PCDx), an index that estimates the age and time until a patient reaches the 30% FEV1 threshold, the point at which lung transplant referral is typically considered. Our findings underscore the need for early intervention and suggest that genotype-specific tools like the PCDx may enhance clinical decision-making in managing progressive lung disease in PCD. The 1.9 billion metric tons of steel globally manufactured in 2023 justify the steel industry’s pivotal role in modern society’s growth. Considering the rapid development of countries that have not fully taken part in the global market, such as Africa, steel production is expected to increase in the next decade. However, the environmental burden associated with steel manufacturing must be mitigated to achieve sustainable production, which would align with the European Green Deal pathway. Such a burden is associated both with the GHG emissions and with the solid residues arising from steel manufacturing, considering both the integrated and electrical routes. The valorisation of the main steel residues from the electrical steelmaking is the central theme of this work, referring to the steel electric manufacturing in the Dalmine case study. The investigation was carried out from two different points of view, comprising the action of a plasma electric reactor and a RecoDust unit to optimize the recovery of iron and zinc, respectively, being the two main technologies envisioned in the EU-funded research project ReMFra. This work focuses on those preliminary steps required to detect the optimal recipes to consider for such industrial units, such as thermodynamic modelling, testing the mechanical properties of the briquettes produced, and the smelting trials carried out at pilot scale. However, tests for the usability of the dusty feedstock for RecoDust are carried out, and, with the results, some recommendations for pretreatment can be made. The outcomes show the high potential of these streams for metal and mineral recovery. Full article

Background: Comorbid personality disorders (PDs) in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) are associated with increased psychopathology, higher suicide risk, and poorer treatment response and outcomes. This study aimed to examine associations between gray matter (GM) volume and PDs in female adolescents with AN before and after short-term psychotherapeutic and nutritional therapy. Methods: Eighteen female adolescents with acute AN, mean age 15.9 years, underwent 3T magnetic resonance imaging before and after weight restoration. The average interval between scans was 2.6 months. Structural brain changes were analyzed using voxel-based morphometry. PDs were assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Disorders (SCID II) and the Assessment of Identity Development Questionnaire. Results: SCID-II total scores showed significant positive associations with GM volume in the mid-cingulate cortex at both time points and in the left superior parietal–occipital lobule at baseline. The histrionic subscale correlated with GM volume in the thalamus bilaterally and the left superior parietal–occipital lobule in both assessments, as well as with the mid-cingulate cortex at follow-up. Borderline and antisocial subscales were associated with GM volume in the thalamus bilaterally at baseline and in the right mid-cingulate cortex at follow-up. Conclusions: PDs in female adolescent patients with AN may be specifically related to GM alterations in the thalamus, cingulate, and parieto-occipital regions, which are present during acute illness and persist after weight restoration therapy. Occupational heat stress represents an increasing challenge to safety and operational performance in underground mining, where elevated temperatures, humidity, and limited ventilation are common. This study proposes an integrated framework to analyze the systemic impact of heat stress on human reliability in mining operations. We conducted a systematic literature review to identify empirical studies addressing thermal exposure, extracting key operational functions for modeling. These functions were structured using the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) to reveal interdependencies and performance variability. Human reliability was evaluated using Fuzzy CREAM, which quantified the degree of contextual control associated with each function. Finally, we applied the Gaussian Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to prioritize functions based on thermal impact, contextual reliability, and systemic connectivity. The results showed that functions involving subjective or complex judgment, such as assessing thermal stress or identifying psychophysiological indicators, exhibited lower reliability and higher vulnerability. In contrast, monitoring and control functions based on standardized procedures were more stable and resilient. This combined approach identified critical points of systemic fragility and offers a robust decision-support tool for prioritizing thermal risk mitigation. The findings contribute to advancing the scientific understanding of heat stress impacts in mining and support the development of targeted interventions to enhance human performance and safety in extreme environments. Background: The majority of parotid gland tumors are benign, e.g., pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and Warthin’s tumor (WT). From a biomedical point of view, oxidative stress is of significant importance due to its established association with the initiation and progression of various types of cancer, including parotid gland cancers. This study aimed to assess whether blood prooxidant–antioxidant markers could aid in diagnosing and guiding surgery for recurrent malignancies after parotid tumor treatment. Methods: We examined patients (n = 20) diagnosed with WT (n = 14) and PA (n = 6) using histopathological verification and computed tomography (CT) who qualified for surgical treatment. Blood samples were taken before the surgery and again 10 days later for biochemical analysis. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT and GPx), the non-enzymatic antioxidants (GSH and UA) and oxidative stress markers (MDA and TOS) were determined in the blood. The activities of CK and LDH and the concentrations of Cor and TAS were measured in the serum. Hb and Ht were determined in whole blood. Results: The patients’ SOD, CAT, and GPx activities after surgery did not differ significantly from their preoperative levels. However, following surgery, their serum TOS levels were significantly elevated in all the patients compared to baseline. In contrast, the plasma MDA concentrations were markedly reduced after surgery. Similarly, the GSH concentrations showed a significant decrease postoperatively. No significant changes were observed in the CK and LDH activities, TAS concentrations, or levels of Hb, Ht and Cor following surgery. Conclusions: The surgical removal of salivary gland tumors did not result in a reduction in oxidative stress at 10 days after surgery. Therefore, further studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of endogenous defense mechanisms in counteracting the oxidative stress induced by salivary gland tumors. Full article

Introduction: Sarcopenia is a systemic condition linked to increased morbidity and mortality in older adults. Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) offers a rapid, bedside method to assess muscle mass. This study evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of POCUS compared to Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), the gold standard method, and explores its prognostic value in old patients undergoing surgery for hip fractures. Patients and Methods: In this prospective, single-center study, 126 patients aged ≥ 70 years and hospitalized with hip fractures were included. Sarcopenia was defined according to the revised 2018 EWGSOP2 criteria. Muscle mass was assessed by the Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass Index (ASMI) using DXA and by the thickness of the rectus femoris (RF) muscle using POCUS. Results: Of the 126 included patients, 52 had both DXA and POCUS assessments, and 43% of them met the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia or severe sarcopenia. RF muscle thickness measured by POCUS was significantly associated with ASMI (R2 = 0.30; p < 0.001). POCUS showed a fair diagnostic accuracy in women (AUC 0.652) and an excellent accuracy in men (AUC 0.905). Optimal diagnostic thresholds according to Youden’s index were 5.7 mm for women and 9.3 mm for men. Neither RF thickness, ASMI, nor sarcopenia status predicted mortality or major postoperative complications. Conclusions: POCUS is a promising, accessible tool for diagnosing sarcopenia in old adults with hip fractures. Nonetheless, its prognostic utility remains uncertain and should be further evaluated in long-term studies. Full article

Background: Transient elastography (TE), using Fibroscan® and point shear wave elastography (pSWE), are two techniques used to estimate liver fibrosis. The aim of our study was to compare, for the first time, these two techniques in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), stratifying the analysis on the basis of the grades of steatosis. Methods: We recruited 85 consecutive MAFLD patients who underwent liver stiffness (LS) measurement performed by Fibroscan® and pSWE on the same day. Severity of steatosis was estimated by Fibroscan® and expressed as controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), ranging from S0 to S3. Spearman’s “r” coefficient was used to calculate the correlation and Bland–Altman graphs was used to evaluate the agreement. Results: In general, the correlation and agreement between Fibroscan® and pSWE were substantial (r = 0.66, p < 0.001 and bias= −0.64 ± 2.48, respectively). When data were analyzed according to the grade of steatosis, an increasing significant correlation was observed going from S0 to S2 (r = 0.79, r = 0.81, and r = 0.85, respectively), whereas a low correlation and agreement were observed for S3 patients (r = 0.48, p = 0.003, bias= −0.95 ± 2.51). Conclusions: Fibroscan® and pSWE are equivalent techniques to estimate liver fibrosis in patients with mild to moderate steatosis, while in presence of severe steatosis their agreement is low.
