Historic urban landscapes, despite their cultural significance, often face neglect, limiting their potential to increase the value of historical centers. Defined as a complex sociotechnical network that involves a variety of agencies incorporating material, immaterial, natural, and artificial elements, these landscapes present significant challenges for architects because of their layered and diverse components. Actor–network theory (ANT) is used as a methodological and ontological framework to address this complexity. However, a notable research gap exists on the basis of the lack of clear representation and practical application of ANT to address the complexity of these historic urban landscapes. To bridge this gap, this study uses Bey’s palace as a case study to develop a comprehensive framework based on a digital mapping approach rooted in ANT. This framework traces, visualizes, and analyzes historic urban landscapes as intricate systems of agencies, leveraging graph theoretical algorithms and computational analysis tasks from network analysis tools to increase their effectiveness. This investigation is based on two key concepts: the actor/actant and the actor network. The research employed Bruno Latour’s concepts of translation, agency, and the mapping controversies technique grounded in graph-theoretic algorithm tasks to decipher the complexities of Bey’s palace system. The results identify seven clusters as actor networks and highlight the roles of key actors/actants, such as Ahmed Bey, decorative elements, courtyard gardens, and Moorish architecture. This methodological approach provides architects and urban planners with practical tools to better understand, analyze and preserve historic urban landscapes, enriching their cultural and historical value. By transforming contested discourses into measurable networks indicators, this interdisciplinary framework directly supports SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), especially Target 11.4, in safeguarding cultural heritage by enabling the prioritization, monitoring and governance of cultural, social and infrastructural assets in historic urban landscapes. The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected Thailand’s economy, forcing many workers to return to their hometowns and engage in agricultural activities. Community-Based Tourism (CBT) has become a significant strategy to mitigate these effects by leveraging local cultural resources. This study aims to (1) assess the potential of cultural resources for tourism development in Koh Perd fishing village, Chanthaburi, Thailand, and (2) examine the determinants of revisit intentions among Thai tourists. To address the first objective, qualitative research was conducted through in-depth interviews with 15 Thai tourists, analyzed using coding analysis, while a quantitative survey of 400 respondents assessed the perceptions of cultural resources. The findings indicate that the village’s historic houses (Ruen Ran Kha) are perceived as the most valuable tourism assets, followed by cultural authenticity and aesthetics, respectively. For the second objective, data from 400 Thai tourists were analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and multiple regression. The results reveal that destination attractions, marketing and accessibility, and safety and security are significant factors influencing revisit intentions. Full article

Tunisia’s northwestern region offers a rich and diverse civilization heritage and cultural potential. However, it has been socially and economically marginalised since the 70s. This study explores the link between urban cultural heritage and the construction of collective identity, emphasising the potential of built heritage to foster sustainable community-based development. In addition to physical attributes, the literature highlights the importance of social interactions in shaping territorial identity. Identity, in this context, is not static but a dynamic territorial construction that integrates architectural, urban, and social dimensions. The cities of El Kef and Tabarka serve as case studies of spatially and culturally marginalised areas, facing significant challenges to both tangible and intangible heritage. With a negative population growth rate (−0.36% between 2004 and 2014) and the lowest economic development indicator nationally (0.3% in 2012), these cities reflect the urgent need for an alternative approach. Through spatial diagnosis, interviews, and stakeholder engagement, the research demonstrates that a renewed territorial model—grounded in heritage valorization and local identity—can support inclusive and adaptive development. Key findings reveal a generational gap in the perception and representation of heritage between younger and older residents. This indicates that cultural identity is not a static inheritance but a dynamic process requiring active community investment. Ultimately, the study concludes that urban identity assets critically influence the capacity of a community to build a shared vision for the enhancement of its territorial identity. This reconnection between territory, memory, and planning enables a collective reappropriation of space, proposing a long-term vision for heritage-integrated urban regeneration. Full article

Artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly transforming heritage tourism through the incorporation of technological solutions that reconfigure the ways in which cultural heritage is conserved, interpreted, and experienced. This article presents a critical and systematic review of current AI applications in this field, with a special focus on their impact on destination management, the personalization of tourist experiences, universal accessibility, and the preservation of both tangible and intangible assets. Based on an analysis of the scientific literature and international use cases, key technologies such as machine learning, computer vision, generative models, and recommendation systems are identified. These tools enable everything from the virtual reconstruction of historical sites to the development of intelligent cultural assistants and adaptive tours, improving the visitor experience and promoting inclusion. This study also examines the main ethical, technical, and epistemological challenges associated with this transformation, including algorithmic surveillance, data protection, interoperability between platforms, the digital divide, and the reconfiguration of heritage knowledge production processes. In conclusion, this study argues that AI, when implemented in accordance with principles of responsibility, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity, can serve as a strategic instrument for ensuring the accessibility, representativeness, and social relevance of cultural heritage in the digital age. However, its effective integration necessitates the development of sector-specific ethical frameworks, inclusive governance models, and sustainable technological implementation strategies that promote equity, community participation, and long-term viability. Furthermore, this article highlights the need for empirical research to assess the actual impact of these technologies and for the creation of indicators to evaluate their effectiveness, fairness, and contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals. Historic and cultural towns in China are crucial carriers of vernacular heritage, yet many unlisted historic buildings remain highly vulnerable to urbanization and fragmented governance. This study takes Xiangzhu Town in Zhejiang Province as a case study and develops a multidimensional evaluation framework—integrating value, morphology, and risk—to identify conservation priorities and guide adaptive reuse. The results highlight three key findings: (1) a spatial pattern of “core preservation and peripheral renewal,” with historical and artistic values concentrated in the core, scientific value declining outward, and functional diversity emerging at the periphery; (2) a morphological structure characterized by “macro-coherence and micro-diversity,” as revealed by balanced global connectivity and localized hotspots in space syntax analysis; and (3) differentiated building risks, where most assets are low to medium risk, but some high-value ancestral halls show accelerated deterioration requiring urgent action. Based on these insights, a collaborative framework of “graded management–classified guidance–zoned response” is proposed to align systematic restoration with community-driven revitalization. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the value–morphology–risk approach for small historic towns, offering a replicable tool for differentiated heritage conservation and sustainable urban–rural transition. Doing business in today’s turbulent and, above all, changing environment represents a great challenge for financial managers in achieving quality management of the organization. Financial data and financial basis are key sources of information and a basis for the financial manager to make decisions and manage well. Financial data are the basis for the effective management of a company, they enable the monitoring of business performance and making operational and strategic decisions, and they are key for future planning and communication with stakeholders. The aim of this paper is an in-depth analysis of the business operations of selected micro and small companies from the city of Split, which are registered for the preparation and serving of food and beverages, to determine whether financial data, their proper use, and management have an impact on business performance. The resource-based view (RBV) is the basis for the development of this research framework. The RBV theory enables and explains the importance of resources, and through this study, the connection with how to interpret and use financial resources (financial data, i.e., information) and what potential effects they have on the financial performance of micro and small companies in the sector registered for the activity of preparing and serving food and beverages in the tourism sector. According to the Accounting Act in the Republic of Croatia, micro companies meet two of three criteria: total assets up to EUR 350,000, revenues up to 700,000, and an average number of employees during the business year of up to 10, while small companies meet two of the following three criteria: total assets up to EUR 4,000,000, revenues up to EUR 8,000,000, and an average number of employees during the business year of up to 50. The results of the research showed the importance of financial information as a resource necessary for business management and competitive position, but also the necessity of continuous investment in the education of financial managers in order to be able to implement the prescribed acts in a way that maximizes the evaluation of the companies’ business performance. This study presents the development of a Digital Twin (DT) framework that is capable of generating and adjusting simulation models of production processes and systems automatically and in real-time. A Machine Vision (MV) system is used to detect newly added or already existing production module locations and rotations, as well as changes in both their location and rotations. This subsystem primarily functions as an External database and is used for new Asset Administrative Shell (AAS) creation, housing, and data gathering, which also includes a visualization platform. Tecnomatix Plant Simulation (TPS) is used for simulation model building, simulation execution, and high-level scheduling based on work orders and technological plans. Different subsystems were integrated into the DT framework using fast and reliable communication protocols. The automation of the proposed framework significantly reduces manual intervention, thus eliminating human factors, reducing the time needed for model creation, improving simulation fidelity, and providing the fundamentals for robust connectivity within the DT framework. The findings highlight the transformative potential of this method for streamlining simulation processes and enhancing system adaptability in complex environments. Full article

Transforming the global legacy of abandoned industrial landscapes into vibrant, sustainable urban assets presents a critical yet complex opportunity, requiring solutions that simultaneously honor heritage and meet evolving urban demands. As multifunctional public spaces, their vitality significantly affects spatial quality and user engagement. We investigate the spatial vitality of post-industrial landscapes through a multi-source data framework, using Beijing’s Shougang Park as a case study. Integrating spatial syntax, point-of-interest (POI) analysis, and Baidu Heat Map data, the research constructs a comprehensive evaluation model encompassing spatial accessibility, functional diversity, heritage openness, and crowd dynamics. The findings reveal a marked spatial imbalance in accessibility, with global integration values ranging from 0.09 to 0.29 and a low intelligibility coefficient of 0.09, underscoring a mismatch between spatial structures and modern functional demands. The study identifies dynamic openness of heritage spaces and integrated community functions as key drivers for revitalization. Optimization simulations demonstrate that restructuring road networks significantly enhances spatial integration, increasing the global integration range to 0.10–0.87. This research contributes a replicable, data-driven framework for assessing and guiding the renewal of legacy industrial sites, offering valuable insights for post-industrial urban regeneration and heritage-based development. In Italy, the management of built assets confiscated from organized crime groups is particularly relevant. Returning these assets to the community is becoming increasingly important for Italian municipalities, thanks to the many social benefits that can be generated (e.g., new spaces to provide community services, a visible and tangible symbol of legality, etc.). The process of redeveloping confiscated buildings, due to procedural complexity and a lack of resources, is currently characterized, on one hand, by a limited number of projects actually implemented compared to the potential of the total number of buildings available and, on the other hand, by the lengthy duration of the redevelopment process (12 years on average), which significantly increases the time it takes for the asset to return social value to the community. The objective of this research was to study, develop, and describe a mechanism that (i) enables an increase in the number of redevelopment actions of confiscated assets, (ii) accelerates the attribution of social value to these assets over time and (iii) extends the social impact of the requalification interventions that provide an opportunity for the professional training of students and the professional qualification of vulnerable people. There are two main tasks of the research shown in this article: (i) to highlight the main critical issues and needs in the management of confiscated assets by Italian municipalities, through a survey conducted among key informants; (ii) to build and test an innovative ‘win–win model’ for the requalification process of confiscated buildings, aimed at overcoming obstacles and anticipating the delivery of social benefits to a large group of stakeholders, including vulnerable people, tested in a pilot project. This “win–win model” combines building requalification and training through the activation of a “construction site school”. All original contributions are derived from the research “Co-WIN”, funded by the “Polisocial Awards 2021”, which developed methods, strategies, and tools capable of reducing social imbalances, with an equity and sustainability perspective. The results illustrated the drivers and challenges for the renovation and reuse of confiscated built assets; the necessary changes in documents and procedures to activate and replicate the “Co-WIN model”; and a training program for the construction-site school based on the social categories involved. Finally, the discussion highlights the network and the mutual benefits for stakeholders, focusing on the social relevance and social impact achievable through applying the Co-WIN model to the requalification process of confiscated buildings. Since the end of the Civil War, Cambodia has pursued economic development to enhance livelihoods, particularly in rural areas, where land is a critical resource. Previous studies have indicated that the country has changed land use and land cover. However, they have not explained how these changes can improve the livelihoods of local communities, thereby mitigating their negative impacts through an asset-based approach. Battambang Province, in the northwestern region, was the battleground until political integration in 1996. Since then, the province has been home to immigrants exploring the lands for livelihood. Thus, this study aims to examine agricultural livelihoods in the villages of Dei Kraham and Ou Toek Thla, located west of Battambang Town. These were selected because of their common characteristics. Adopting a quantitative approach and a sustainable livelihood framework, this study employed stratified random sampling to select 123 families for interviews across three population subgroups: old settlers, new settlers, and young settlers. In situ information was collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis tests to assess the livelihood assets underlying the physical, natural, human, financial, and social capital. The statistical analysis results reveal no significant differences (p-value = 0.079) in livelihood assets between the strata at the village level. Meanwhile, significant differences were observed in physical, human, and financial capital between old and young settlers when examining the subgroups (p-value 0.000). The extent of the land resources held by old settlers was associated with household income and livelihoods related to agriculture. Based on livelihood asset scores, nearly half of the new settlers (0.49–0.5) and a quarter of the young settlers (0.47) are vulnerable groups requiring support. The youth will soon face an uncertain future if they do not prioritize education. Full article

In high-density and land-scarce urban environments such as Taipei—a typical example of compact development in East Asia—informal green spaces (IGSs)—defined as unmanaged or unplanned vegetated urban areas such as vacant lots, street verges, and railway margins—play a growing role in urban environmental and social dynamics. This study explores residents’ perceptions of IGSs and examines how these spaces contribute to urban sustainability and land governance. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines the literature review, field observations, and a structured public opinion survey in Taipei’s Wenshan District, the study identifies key perceived benefits and drawbacks of IGSs. Findings show that residents highly value IGSs for enhancing urban greenery, offering recreational opportunities, and promoting physical and mental health. However, concerns persist regarding safety, sanitation, and maintenance—particularly fears of waste accumulation, mosquito breeding, and risks to children. The results highlight the dual nature of IGSs as both vital ecological assets and potential sources of urban disorder. These insights underscore the need for inclusive, community-based governance models that can transform IGSs into legitimate components of green infrastructure. The study contributes to emerging discussions on adaptive urban land governance by proposing that informal spaces be strategically integrated into urban planning frameworks to enhance environmental equity, resilience, and citizen well-being. This paper explores the experiences of parents of children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) who have participated in parenting programmes in the UK. The parents attended generic programmes before they were able to access more specific programmes geared towards the needs of children with ASD. The parents found that the generic programmes were detrimental to the needs of their children and disruptive of family life, resulting in parental relationship breakdown in some instances. Whilst the ASD-specific programmes did provide some level of support, the most decisive factor was the sharing of experiences amongst those parents as well as the ongoing support that this fostered. The conclusion of this study is that the neoliberal responsibilisation of parents via parenting programmes is undermining the support networks of parents of children with ASD, and an asset-based community development approach would be more beneficial. This article investigates how digital competences contribute to the production of social capital and professional recognition through a systematic review of international literature. Drawing on 62 peer-reviewed articles indexed in Web of Science, Scopus, and ERIC, the review identifies the most frequently mobilized theoretical frameworks, the predominant types and sources of recognition, and the associated dimensions of social capital. The findings reveal a growing emphasis on communicative and network-based digital competences—particularly digital communication, information management, and virtual collaboration—as key assets in professional contexts. Recognition is shown to take predominantly non-material, extrinsic, and visibility-oriented forms, with social media platforms emerging as central sites for the performance and circulation of digital competences. The results indicate that social media proficiency has become a central determinant of social recognition, favoring individuals who possess not only digital fluency but also the ability to strategically develop and mobilize their networks. This dynamic reframes signal theory in light of today’s platformed ecosystems: recognition no longer depends increasingly on one’s capacity to render competences legible, visible, and endorsed within algorithmically mediated environments. Those who master the codes of visibility and reputation-building online are best positioned to convert recognition into social capital and professional opportunity. Full article

The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) has significantly altered the operational characteristics of modern power systems, resulting in reduced system inertia and fault current capacity. These developments introduce new challenges for maintaining frequency and voltage stability, particularly in low-inertia grids that are dominated by inverter-based resources (IBRs). This paper presents a hierarchical control framework that integrates synchronous condensers (SCs) and grid-forming (GFM) inverters through a leader–follower consensus control architecture to address these issues. In this approach, selected GFMs act as leaders to restore nominal voltage and frequency, while follower GFMs and SCs collaboratively share active and reactive power. The primary control employs droop-based regulation, and a distributed secondary layer enables proportional power sharing via peer-to-peer communication. A modified IEEE 14-bus test system is implemented in PSCAD to validate the proposed strategy under scenarios including load disturbances, reactive demand variations, and plug-and-play operations. Compared to conventional droop-based control, the proposed framework reduces frequency nadir by up to 0.3 Hz and voltage deviation by 1.1%, achieving optimised sharing indices. Results demonstrate that consensus-based coordination enhances dynamic stability and power-sharing fairness and supports the flexible integration of heterogeneous assets without requiring centralised control. Effective maintenance and management of road infrastructure are essential for community well-being, economic stability, and cost efficiency. Well-maintained roads reduce accident risks, improve safety, shorten travel times, lower vehicle repair costs, and facilitate the flow of goods, all of which positively contribute to GDP and economic development. Accurate intersection mapping forms the foundation of effective road asset management, yet traditional manual digitization methods remain time-consuming and prone to gaps and overlaps. This study presents an automated computational geometry solution for precise road intersection mapping that eliminates common digitization errors. Unlike conventional approaches that only detect intersection positions, our method systematically reconstructs complete intersection geometries while maintaining topological consistency. The technique combines plane surveying principles (including line-bearing analysis and curve detection) with spatial analytics to automatically identify intersections, characterize their connectivity patterns, and assign unique identifiers based on configurable parameters. When evaluated across multiple urban contexts using diverse data sources (manual digitization and OpenStreetMap), the method demonstrated consistent performance with mean Intersection over Union greater than 0.85 and F-scores more than 0.91. The high correctness and completeness metrics (both more than 0.9) confirm its ability to minimize both false positive and omission errors, even in complex roadway configurations. The approach consistently produced gap-free, overlap-free outputs, showing strength in handling interchange geometries. The solution enables transportation agencies to make data-driven maintenance decisions by providing reliable, standardized intersection inventories. Its adaptability to varying input data quality makes it particularly valuable for large-scale infrastructure monitoring and smart city applications. Full article
