Municipal animal shelters play a crucial role in rescuing abandoned animals, managing free-roaming populations, and promoting animal welfare. This seven-year retrospective study analyzed 2291 animals (1132 dogs, 1159 cats) admitted to a Portuguese municipal shelter (CVM Feira) between 2018 and 2024 to identify predictors of live outcomes. Descriptive and regression analyses were performed on 1325 adoptable animals. Adoption occurred for 58.9% of these animals, while 41.1% remained in long-term housing, reflecting growing shelter capacity pressures. Length of Stay (LOS) was the strongest predictor of adoption, with extended stays markedly reducing adoption odds and contributing to overcrowding. For dogs, female sex and owner or animal protection association (APA) surrender increased adoption likelihood. Microchipped animals were 71 times more likely to be returned to their owners, although only a small proportion entered the shelter with identification. The overall Live Release Rate (LRR) was 79.7% and Save Rate (SR) 84.7%, highlighting effective life-saving efforts, while the Population Balance Calculation (PBC) of 75.6% revealed challenges in population flow-through. These findings provide evidence that data-driven strategies, including reducing LOS, enforcing microchipping, and applying species-specific management, are essential to optimize municipal shelter operations and improve animal welfare, with insights applicable to broader European and international contexts. Since cats often struggle to acclimate to laboratory settings, a key requirement for effective testing, we adapted Ainsworth’s Strange Situation Test (SST) for use in environments familiar to the cats. We examined 82 cat–caregiver dyads from private households and animal shelters using a standardised five-phase video procedure comprising distinct phases of presence, separation, and reunion between the cats and their human caregivers. Seven attachment-related behaviours were recorded via focal animal sampling and analysed using mixed models. Significant differences were observed in exploratory behaviour, physical contact, play (social, object, and locomotor), passive behaviour, and vocalisation. Cats from private homes exhibited more exploratory and play behaviour, particularly after reuniting with their caregiver, indicating a positive influence of the familiar person’s presence. Cats from animal shelters exhibited reduced play behaviour, more passive behaviour, and more frequent purring, particularly following reunion. Physical contact increased following separations, indicating attachment. Meowing was most frequent during absences and reunions, possibly reflecting stress and renewed social contact. Outdoor access emerged as a potential influencing factor for exploratory behaviour. In summary, attachment behaviours in cats were significantly influenced by the living environment, access to the outdoors, and the presence of familiar or unfamiliar individuals. Certain test phases elicited particularly strong behavioural responses. Full article

Donkeys (Equus asinus) play a critical role in agricultural, transport, and livelihood systems across Asia, yet they remain among the most neglected domestic species in terms of welfare, management, and research attention. This review synthesizes recent literature on donkey welfare, health, breeding, and conservation across Asia, highlighting regional disparities and emerging challenges. A systematic review of published studies identified welfare determinants including nutrition, workload, shelter, and veterinary access. Welfare conditions are found to be poorest in South Asia, particularly in Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, where chronic undernutrition, inadequate housing, excessive workloads, and limited veterinary support prevail. Preventive healthcare, such as vaccination and deworming, remains largely absent, reflecting low owner awareness and weak veterinary infrastructure. In contrast, China demonstrates substantial progress through semi-intensive farming systems, structured welfare management, and research-based breeding programs that integrate welfare with productivity enhancement. Recent advancements in molecular genetics have further expanded the scope of donkey conservation and improvement. Studies on key genes, including PRKG2, NR6A1, LTBP2, HOXC8, and DCAF7, have elucidated their roles in vertebral number, skeletal development, and body conformation in Dezhou donkeys, offering new opportunities for genomic-level conservation and marker-assisted selection. Nonetheless, significant health challenges, such as parasitic, bacterial, and viral infections (Theileria equi, Giardia duodenalis, and Equid herpesviruses), continue to threaten productivity and welfare. Reproductive management across most Asian countries remains traditional and uncoordinated, whereas China leads in artificial insemination, genetic resource preservation, and policy-supported breeding initiatives. Ethical concerns surrounding overexploitation and the commercial use of donkeys, particularly in the ejiao (donkey-hide gelatin) industry, are also gaining attention. Overall, this review underscores the urgent need for a “One Welfare” approach, linking Animal Welfare, human livelihoods, and sustainable industry development. Strengthening veterinary infrastructure, promoting owner education, and integrating genomic tools into breeding programs are essential steps toward improving the welfare, productivity, and long-term conservation of donkeys across Asia. Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval form of the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis, which is considered one of the most dangerous parasites for humans. E. multilocularis infections are most frequently observed in forestry workers, farmers, hunters, berry harvesters, and workers employed in animal shelters. The subject of this study was a four-year follow-up profile of cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-4 (IL-4), and interleukin-10 (IL-10), in a patient with advanced liver alveolar echinococcosis and non-optimal antiparasitic treatment. Ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen, X-ray, CT of the chest, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head were performed during the observation and treatment of the AE patient. After antiparasitic treatment was initiated, decreased activity of the gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP), decreased serum concentrations of immunoglobulin E, C-reactive protein (CRP), and the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNFα, IL-1, and IL-6 were observed, as well as slightly increased levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10). Conclusions. During a four-year follow-up in a patient with advanced hepatic alveolar echinococcosis and non-optimal antiparasitic treatment, a decrease in proinflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6) and a slight increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10) were detected. A better understanding of cytokine regulation in infectious diseases may be important to the development of new therapeutic strategies aimed at antiparasitic treatment. We suggest that broad initiatives (preferably at the local community level) should be implemented to raise awareness of the threat of alveolar echinococcosis and methods for avoiding E. multilocularis infection. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant public health concern in companion animals, yet systematic surveillance in North Macedonia is lacking. This study investigated the prevalence of resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from 112 fecal samples from dogs in six shelters in North Macedonia and evaluated the associated risk factors, providing the first baseline dataset for this population. High resistance was observed for sulfamethoxazole (68.75%), ampicillin (52.68%), and ciprofloxacin (41.07%). Multidrug resistance was present in 50% of the isolates, with 17 (15.17%) confirmed as ESBL producers. Additionally, 18 isolates (16.1%) were identified as AmpC producers, 16 of which carried the blaCMY-2 gene. Notably, 72.2% of ESBL/AmpC isolates were resistant to ertapenem despite the absence of carbapenemase genes, a finding that warrants further investigation. Risk factors such as shared housing, longer shelter stays, and frequent empirical antimicrobial use were identified as probable contributors to the carriage of ESBL-/AmpC-producing E. coli. None of the shelters had antimicrobial stewardship protocols or routine diagnostic testing, revealing critical gaps in infection control and antimicrobial practices. These findings underscore the urgent need for antimicrobial stewardship and surveillance in North Macedonia’s companion animal populations within the One Health framework. Full article

This study aimed to investigate cattle farmer livelihoods that relate to cattle welfare in the region with the newly emerging Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in Indonesia. A semi-structured interview survey was conducted with randomly selected cattle farmers (n = 102), in Riau. Cattle were bled for analysis of LSD-post-vaccinal seroconversion. The Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) was used; data on livelihood assets, activities, and outcomes were analysed using Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), two-step clustering, and the radar chart of asset possessions. The survey showed that vaccination and veterinary services covered 82.4% and 90.2% of farms. Seroconversion was detectable in vaccinated (15.0%, n = 173) and in non-vaccinated animals (23.1%, n = 13). Farmers mostly fed only grass to cattle (92.2%), with neither pastoral management nor ad libitum water provision. The MCA and cluster analyses indicated that cattle shelter roofing and flooring and manure disposal were the most important markers of the community’s livelihood. Poverty among cattle farmers was 23.5%. The cluster with lower income per capita had lower quality of shelter roofing and flooring, a lack of regular manure disposal, jobless second children, and the lowest possession of natural and physical assets. Helping to possess natural and physical assets might improve cattle farmers’ well-being and cattle welfare. Full article

The welfare of decapod crustaceans held in captivity, whether in aquariums, holding facilities, seafood restaurants, supermarkets, or fishmongers, is attracting growing attention and concern. This review focuses on three species that are commonly found in European commercial environments: the European spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas), the European lobster (Homarus gammarus), and the American lobster (Homarus americanus). We examine the biology and behavioural ecology of these decapods, emphasising their natural habits and environmental requirements. Based on current scientific knowledge, we propose conditions for their confinement that better align with their biological and behavioural needs. These crustaceans are commonly subjected to stressful captive environments characterised by overcrowding, claw immobilisation through banding, an absence of shelter or hiding spaces, and continuous exposure to direct lighting. Such practices contrast starkly with the animals’ innate behaviours and natural habitats, likely compromising their physical health and psychological welfare. It is thereby recommended that spiny lobsters and lobsters be kept separated and stocked at an appropriate density, that each animal should be provided with a shelter and have enough space to turn around, that true lobsters should never have their claws tied, that no direct light should be placed above the aquaria, and that water quality should be routinely monitored. By exploring the welfare challenges associated with confining these species, this review aims to promote a more ethical and humane approach to their care in commercial settings, and to encourage practices that enhance their quality of life in captivity. Among synanthropic species, European hedgehogs are widely distributed throughout Europe. In recent decades, these animals have increasingly adapted to anthropogenic environments, where they find abundant shelter and food resources, along with fewer natural predators. As with other wildlife, it is likely that their coexistence in cities is also affecting their microbiota, promoting the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study aimed to assess the occurrence and patterns of AMR in commensal enteric Escherichia coli isolated from hedgehogs (n = 53) living in anthropogenic environments upon admission to a wildlife rescue center in Turin (Italy). The effects of hospitalization on the prevalence and trends of AMR were also assessed. Our results confirm that hedgehogs can harbor resistant E. coli upon admission, in particular against cefazolin (41.5%), ampicillin (37.7%), and enrofloxacin (22.6%). In addition, hospitalization promoted an increase in minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of all antibiotics except imipenem, which led to a significant increase in E. coli that was resistant towards doxycycline, enrofloxacin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Admitted hedgehogs were also carriers of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli (5.7%), whose presence increased during hospitalization (to 20.8%). These results highlight the role of hospitalizations longer than five days in the acquisition of AMR and suggest that European hedgehogs can become potential carriers of resistant E. coli following hospitalization. Environmental impact plays a pivotal role in forming the welfare of shelter dogs exposed to chronic stress. Standard methods of animal health monitoring, such as psychological evaluation or cortisol measurements, do not fully reflect modulation of the immune system. Functional cellular changes may be subtle and observed only at the molecular level. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the immune function of shelter dogs kept on different timetables in comparison with client-owned dogs. We focused on potential alterations of antigen processing by neutrophils and monocytes in animals undergoing different durations of stress. Hematological and biochemical parameters were evaluated, and changes in TLR4 and MHC Class II expression on neutrophils and monocytes isolated from peripheral blood were determined. Additionally, we measured the percentage of apoptotic cells within these leukocyte populations. Our study revealed that stressful conditions can alter the molecular pattern of surface receptors on neutrophils and monocytes, as well as the leukocytes apoptosis rate. The obtained data also indicated that the dogs’ duration of stay in the shelter plays an important role in immunomodulation and triggering their adaptation mechanisms. These results bring a new perspective and will be crucial in developing improved guidelines for monitoring and promoting the welfare of shelter dogs. Full article

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is one of the most common microsporidian parasites, primarily infecting the intestinal epithelial cells of a broad range of animal species, including humans. To date, no scientific reports have documented Enterocytozoon spp. in animal hosts in Romania. This study aimed to assess the occurrence and genetic characteristics of E. bieneusi in shelter dogs, as well as its potential public health relevance. Between December 2022 and May 2025, a total of 112 freshly voided diarrheal fecal samples were collected from dogs housed in a shelter near Timișoara Municipality, Romania. The samples were subjected to molecular analysis using a two-step nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rRNA gene. The resulting sequences were deposited in GenBank® and analyzed phylogenetically. PCR analysis revealed E. bieneusi DNA in 11 (9.8%) samples, identifying two genotypes, with PtEb IX (n = 10) as the dominant genotype and BEB4 (n = 1), which has zoonotic potential. A significant difference in prevalence was found between juvenile (23.1%) and adult (5.8%) dogs (p = 0.026). Phylogenetic analysis of the ITS sequences showed that the isolates clustered into two distinct clades alongside reference sequences from the GenBank® database. This is the first report of E. bieneusi infection in animals in Romania, providing essential baseline data and highlighting the need for broader surveillance into its prevalence and genetic diversity in other potential hosts. These results reflect the prevalence and genetic diversity of E. bieneusi exclusively among symptomatic (diarrheic) dogs and should not be generalized to the broader shelter dog population. This qualitative study explores the perceptions of mothers who are victims of domestic violence regarding their children’s interactions during animal-assisted activities conducted over three months in a residential shelter. Utilizing a semi-structured interview approach, six mothers from diverse national backgrounds, aged 24 to 48 years, participated in the research. The study identifies perceived benefits, behavioral changes, and challenges encountered during the sessions. Content analysis revealed four main categories: (A) Parents’ perceptions of their children’s previous contact with pets; (B) initial expectations of parents regarding their children’s participation in the intervention; (C) mothers’ observations during the intervention sessions with the animals; and (D) mothers’ reflections after the intervention. Findings indicate benefits for children’s behavior and development, perceived improvements in socio-emotional skills and communication, as well as a positive emotional experience for the mothers throughout the process. The results underscore the significance of animal-assisted activities in promoting the well-being of children and their families. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating family perspectives in evaluating therapeutic interventions and offers insights for structuring more inclusive and effective animal-assisted intervention programs. This article explores Greco-Roman mythology through the lens of ecocriticism, focusing on how sacred landscapes and natural elements were imagined as animate, divine, and morally instructive forces. In ancient Mediterranean cultures, nature was not merely a passive setting for human action but a dynamic presence—rivers that judged, groves that punished, and mountains that sheltered or revealed. Texts such as Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Virgil’s Georgics, and Homer’s epics present nature as both sacred and sentient, often intervening in human affairs through transformation, vengeance, or protection. Forests, springs, and coastlines functioned as thresholds between human and divine, civilization and wilderness, mortal and eternal. By analyzing these representations, this article reveals a rich tradition in which nature teaches, punishes, guides, and transforms, long before ecological consciousness became a formalized discipline. Drawing connections between classical literary landscapes and contemporary environmental concerns, the article argues that myth can inform today’s ecological imagination, offering an alternative to extractive, anthropocentric paradigms. Recovering the reverence and narrative agency once granted to nature in classical thought may help us rethink our ethical relationship with the environment in the age of climate crisis. Full article

Evaluation of Surface Area Dynamics of Manta and Beleu Lakes

This study evaluated the surface area and volume dynamics of the largest and most important natural lakes in the Republic of Moldova: Manta and Beleu. Lakes and surrounding areas represent the main natural ecosystem of the country, are a shelter to thousands of animals and plant species, and are included in the protected areas network. The lakes are situated in the Lower Prut floodplain, with the main water sources being the Prut River through channels, as well as groundwater, surface runoff and precipitation. Regulations of the Prut River flow, climate change, and the increasing frequency of droughts and floods have a certain impact on lake extension and volume dynamics. The main methods used to evaluate surface area variation are the analysis of satellite images (Landsats, from 1975 to 2024) and the application of the NDWI index. As a result, it was identified that the extent of Beleu Lake varied from 0 to 19 km2, and that of Manta Lake from 5 to 27 km2. The actual average surface area is 7–11 km2 for Beleu and 15–19 km2 for Manta. The last catastrophic drought in 2022 decreased the surface area of Beleu by up to 3.7 km2 and that of Manta by up to 5 km2, while the most recent floods in 2020 extended the area of Beleu by up to 12 km2 and that of Manta by up to 27.3 km2. The volumes of Beleu vary from 0 to 40 mil.m3, with an average of 6.5–9 mil.m3, and of Manta from 4.5 mil.m3 to 55 mil.m3, with an average of 15–22 mil.m3. The shoreline lengths corresponding to the average water surface areas are 14–20 km for Beleu and 35–40 km for Manta. Full article

Socioeconomic and Spatial Determinants of Dog Abandonment and Adoption in the Republic of Korea (2021–2023)

This study examined the socioeconomic and veterinary cost factors influencing dog abandonment and adoption outcomes across 162 regions in the Republic of Korea from 2021 to 2023. Unlike prior research, this study distinguished between intentionally abandoned dogs and those lost and subsequently returned to their owners, normalizing abandonment data by population. Using publicly available regional data and spatial regression models, we found that the number of people receiving unemployment benefits was consistently and negatively associated with the number of dog abandonments per 100,000 residents, which was normalized by total population to avoid potential errors. Rabies vaccination costs were also negatively associated with abandonment. In contrast, comprehensive income tax amounts—a proxy for regional wealth—were positively correlated with the percentage of dog abandonments reported in 2021 and 2023. Spatial Lag Models accounted for over 50% of the variance in the number of dog abandonments, confirming spatial dependence and highlighting the importance of geographically targeted animal welfare interventions. However, spatial patterns in adoption were less consistent. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating economic and spatial considerations into the design of public policies and shelter strategies to mitigate dog abandonment and enhance adoption outcomes. Environmental Risks and Toxicity of Fipronil and Imidacloprid Used in Pets Ectoparasiticides

Fipronil (FIP) and imidacloprid (IMID) are two of the most commonly used ectoparasiticides to control parasites in pets. Compared with those of farm animals, their environmental risks have generally been considered low because of their limited use; however, the growing pet population and evolving treatment practices make this assumption challenging. To assess these risks, water samples were collected at an animal shelter in Italy to monitor the abundance of ectoparasiticides in aquatic environments. Additionally, laboratory-based ecotoxicological assays were carried out on a range of marine non-target species across different trophic levels (algae, copepods, and mussels). In vitro toxicity tests on human epithelial cell cultures were also implemented to examine potential cytotoxic effects at the levels of human exposure detectable in a domestic setting after pet treatment. Wastewater samples from the shelter contained 0.18 µg L−1 of IMID, 0.50 µg L−1 of FIP, and 0.20 µg L−1 of FIP-sulfone, with these concentrations remaining stable for 60 days. Chronic exposure to FIP and IMID at 30.0 µg L−1 impaired the mobility of the copepods. The EC10 and EC20 values were determined to be 1.7 (0.06–6.59) µg L−1 and 2.8 (0.436–8.51) µg L−1 for FIP and 2.6 (0.80–6.33) µg L−1 and 7.6 (3.12–15.8) µg L−1 for IMID, respectively. FIP and IMID exposure led to lipid peroxidation in the digestive glands and gills of mussels, whereas only IMID exposure increased acetylcholinesterase activity in the digestive glands at concentrations between 0.5 and 5.0 µg L−1. Additionally, both fipronil and imidacloprid triggered the production of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation and decreased the viability of human keratinocyte cells in a concentration-dependent manner. These findings highlight the persistence and potential risks of FIP and IMID, stressing the need for stricter regulations and further research on chronic environmental exposure to safeguard ecosystems and public health.
