A Framework of Indicators for Assessing Team Performance of Human–Robot Collaboration in Construction Projects

The construction industry has been troubled by a shortage of skilled labor and safety accidents in recent years. Therefore, more and more robots are introduced to undertake dangerous and repetitive jobs, so that human workers can concentrate on higher-value and creative problem-solving tasks. Nevertheless, although human–robot collaboration (HRC) shows great potential, most existing evaluation methods still focus on the single performance of either the human or robot, and systematic indicators for a whole HRC team remain insufficient. To fill this research gap, the present study constructs a comprehensive evaluation framework for HRC team performance in construction projects. Firstly, a detailed literature review is carried out, and three theories are integrated to build 33 indicators preliminarily. Afterwards, an expert questionnaire survey (N = 15) is adopted to revise and verify the model empirically. The survey yielded a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.916, indicating excellent internal consistency. The indicators rated highest in importance were task completion time (µ = 4.53) and dynamic separation distance (µ = 4.47) on a 5-point scale. Eight indicators were excluded due to mean importance ratings falling below the 3.0 threshold. The framework is formed with five main dimensions and 25 concrete indicators. Finally, an AHP-TOPSIS method is used to evaluate the HRC team performance. The AHP analysis reveals that Safety (weight = 0.2708) is prioritized over Productivity (weight = 0.2327) by experts, establishing a safety-first principle for successful HRC deployment. The framework is demonstrated through a case study of a human–robot plastering team, whose team performance scored as fair. This shows that the framework can help practitioners find out the advantages and disadvantages of HRC team performance and provide targeted improvement strategies. Furthermore, the framework offers construction managers a scientific basis for deciding robot deployment and team assignment, thus promoting safer, more efficient, and more creative HRC in construction projects. Collagen type I (COL(I)) is a key component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and is involved in cell signaling and migration through cell receptors. Collagen degradation produces bioactive peptides (matrikines), which influence cellular processes. In this study, we investigated the biological effects of nine most abundant, naturally occurring urinary COL(I)-derived peptides on human endothelial cells at physiological concentrations, using cell migration assays, mass spectrometry-based proteomics, flow cytometry, and AlphaFold 3. While none of the peptides significantly altered endothelial migration by themselves at physiological concentrations, full-length COL(I) increased cell migration, which was inhibited by Peptide 1 (229NGDDGEAGKPGRPGERGPpGp249). This peptide uniquely contains the DGEA and GRPGER motifs, interacting with integrin α2β1. Flow cytometry confirmed the presence of integrin α2β1 on human endothelial cells, and AlphaFold 3 modeling predicted an interaction between Peptide 1 and integrin α2. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics investigating signaling pathways revealed that COL(I) triggered phosphorylation events linked to integrin α2β1 activation and cell migration, which were absent in COL(I) plus peptide 1-treated cells. These findings identify Peptide 1 as a biologically active COL(I)-derived peptide at a physiological concentration capable of modulating collagen-induced cell migration, and provide a foundation for further investigation into its mechanisms of action and role in urine excretion. Multitarget Design of Steroidal Inhibitors Against Hormone-Dependent Breast Cancer: An Integrated In Silico Approach

Hormone-dependent breast cancer, particularly in its treatment-resistant forms, remains a significant therapeutic challenge. In this study, we applied a fully computational strategy to design steroid-based compounds capable of simultaneously targeting three key receptors involved in disease progression: progesterone receptor (PR), estrogen receptor alpha (ER-α), and HER2. Using a robust 3D-QSAR model (R2 = 0.86; Q2_LOO = 0.86) built from 52 steroidal structures, we identified molecular features associated with high anticancer potential, specifically increased polarizability and reduced electronegativity. From a virtual library of 271 DFT-optimized analogs, 31 compounds were selected based on predicted potency (pIC50 > 7.0) and screened via molecular docking against PR (PDB 2W8Y), HER2 (PDB 7JXH), and ER-α (PDB 6VJD). Seven candidates showed strong binding affinities (ΔG ≤ −9 kcal/mol for at least two targets), with Estero-255 emerging as the most promising. This compound demonstrated excellent conformational stability, a robust hydrogen-bonding network, and consistent multitarget engagement. Molecular dynamics simulations over 100 nanoseconds confirmed the structural integrity of the top ligands, with low RMSD values, compact radii of gyration, and stable binding energy profiles. Key interactions included hydrophobic contacts, π–π stacking, halogen–π interactions, and classical hydrogen bonds with conserved residues across all three targets. These findings highlight Estero-255, alongside Estero-261 and Estero-264, as strong multitarget candidates for further development. By potentially disrupting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, these compounds offer a promising strategy for overcoming resistance in hormone-driven breast cancer. Experimental validation, including cytotoxicity assays and ADME/Tox profiling, is recommended to confirm their therapeutic potential. Full article

Analysis of the Differences in Rhizosphere Microbial Communities and Pathogen Adaptability in Chili Root Rot Disease Between Continuous Cropping and Rotation Cropping Systems

In chili cultivation, obstacles to continuous cropping significantly compromise crop yield and soil health, whereas crop rotation can enhance the microbial environment of the soil and reduce disease incidence. However, its effects on the diversity of rhizosphere soil microbial communities are not clear. In this study, we analyzed the composition and characteristics of rhizosphere soil microbial communities under chili continuous cropping (CC) and chili–cotton crop rotation (CR) using high-throughput sequencing technology. CR treatment reduced the alpha diversity indices (including Chao1, Observed_species, and Shannon index) of bacterial communities and had less of an effect on fungal community diversity. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed distinct compositional differences in bacterial and fungal communities between the treatments. Compared with CC, CR treatment has altered the structure of the soil microbial community. In terms of bacterial communities, the relative abundance of Firmicutes increased from 12.89% to 17.97%, while the Proteobacteria increased by 6.8%. At the genus level, CR treatment significantly enriched beneficial genera such as RB41 (8.19%), Lactobacillus (4.56%), and Bacillus (1.50%) (p < 0.05). In contrast, the relative abundances of Alternaria and Fusarium in the fungal community decreased by 6.62% and 5.34%, respectively (p < 0.05). Venn diagrams and linear discriminant effect size analysis (LEfSe) further indicated that CR facilitated the enrichment of beneficial bacteria, such as Bacillus, whereas CC favored enrichment of pathogens, such as Firmicutes. Fusarium solani MG6 and F. oxysporum LG2 are the primary chili root-rot pathogens. Optimal growth occurs at 25 °C, pH 6: after 5 days, MG6 colonies reach 6.42 ± 0.04 cm, and LG2 5.33 ± 0.02 cm, peaking in sporulation (p < 0.05). In addition, there are significant differences in the utilization spectra of carbon and nitrogen sources between the two strains of fungi, suggesting their different ecological adaptability. Integrated analyses revealed that CR enhanced soil health and reduced the root rot incidence by optimizing the structure of soil microbial communities, increasing the proportion of beneficial bacteria, and suppressing pathogens, providing a scientific basis for microbial-based soil management strategies in chili cultivation. Our study was conducted in the Valle Nuevo National Park and included four habitat classes: tussock grass (Sabapa), pine forest (Pinoc), broadleaf forest (Boslat), and agricultural ecosystem (Ecoag). We had two main objectives: to comparatively describe millipede communities and to determine the relationships between population density/diversity and soil physicochemical variables. The research was cross-sectional and non-manipulative, with a descriptive and correlational scope; sampling followed a stratified systematic design, with eight transects and 32 quadrats of 1 m2, covering 21.7 km. We found a sandy loam soil with an extremely acidic pH. The highest population density of millipedes was recorded in Sabapa, and the lowest in Ecoag. The highest alpha diversity was shared between Boslat (Margalef = 1.72) and Pinoc (Shannon = 2.53); Sabapa and Boslat showed the highest Jaccard similarity (0.56). The null hypothesis test using the weighted Shannon index revealed a statistically significant difference in diversity between the Boslat–Sabapa and Pinoc–Sabapa pairs. Two of the species recorded highly significant indicator values (IndVal) for two habitat classes. We found significant correlations (p < 0.05) between various soil physicochemical variables and millipede density and diversity. Full article

Inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR) operations on underwater infrastructure remain costly and time-intensive because fully teleoperated remote operated vehicle s(ROVs) lack the range and dexterity necessary for precise cooperative underwater manipulation, and the alternative of using professional divers is ruled out due to the risk involved. This work presents and experimentally validates an autonomous, dual-I-AUV (Intervention–Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) system capable of assembling rigid pipeline segments through coordinated actions in a confined underwater workspace. The first I-AUV is a Girona 500 (4-DoF vehicle motion, pitch and roll stable) fitted with multiple payload cameras and a 6-DoF Reach Bravo 7 arm, giving the vehicle 10 total DoF. The second I-AUV is a BlueROV2 Heavy equipped with a Reach Alpha 5 arm, likewise yielding 10 DoF. The workflow comprises (i) detection and grasping of a coupler pipe section, (ii) synchronized teleoperation to an assembly start pose, and (iii) assembly using a kinematic controller that exploits the Girona 500’s full 10 DoF, while the BlueROV2 holds position and orientation to stabilize the workspace. Validation took place in a 12 m × 8 m × 5 m water tank. Results show that the paired I-AUVs can autonomously perform precision pipeline assembly in real water conditions, representing a significant step toward fully automated subsea construction and maintenance. In order to promote healthy aging, it is important to know older people’s perceptions of healthy aging. The aim of this study is to conduct a Turkish validity and reliability study of the Healthy Aging Perception Scale for Older People with Chronic Diseases. This study was conducted between November and December 2023 with older adult people living in a region in eastern Turkey. A total of 210 older people were included in the sample for the exploratory factor analysis and 214 for the confirmatory factor analysis. A Sociodemographic Information Form and Healthy Aging Perception Scale was used to collect the data of the study. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and AMOS 22.0. Confirmatory factor analysis for the 18-item scale, a four-factor structure with an eigenvalue exceeding 1, was obtained, and it was determined that the factor loadings ranged between 0.834 and 0.637 and the total variance explained was 64.619%. The confirmatory factor analysis of the goodness of fit indices was found to be at an acceptable level. CMIN/DF = 2.834, RMSEA = 0.05, CFI = 0.929, TLI = 0.910, NFI = 0.920, and GFI = 0.901. Cronbach’s alpha of the scale was determined to be 0.826, and the test–retest reliability coefficient was determined to be 0.822. Factor analysis showed a better model fit, and it was determined that the Healthy Aging Perception Scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool in determining the perceptions of the healthy aging of older people with chronic diseases. The recent discovery of Orthonairovirus songlingense (SGLV) and Norwavirus beijiense (BJNV) in China has raised significant concern due to their potential to cause severe human disease. However, little is known about the structural features and function of their nucleoproteins, which play a key role in the viral life cycle. By combining small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data and AlphaFold 3 simulations, we reconstructed the BJNV and SGLV nucleoprotein structures for the first time. The SGLV and BJNV nucleoproteins have structures that are broadly similar to those of Orthonairovirus haemorrhagiae (CCHFV) nucleoproteins despite low sequence similarity. Based on structural analysis, several residues located in the positively charged region of BJNV and SGLV nucleoproteins have been indicated to be important for viral RNA binding. A positively charged RNA-binding crevice runs along the interior of the SGLV and BJNV ribonucleoprotein complex (RNP), shielding the viral RNA. Despite the high structural similarity between SGLV and BJNV nucleoprotein monomers, their RNPs adopt distinct conformations. These findings provide important insights into the molecular mechanisms of viral genome packaging and replication in these emerging pathogens. Also, our work demonstrates that experimental SAXS data can validate and improve predicted AlphaFold 3 structures to reflect their solution structure and also provides the first low-resolution structures of the BJNV and SGLV nucleoproteins for the future development of POC tests, vaccines, and antiviral drugs. Bacterial and Physicochemical Dynamics During the Vermicomposting of Bovine Manure: A Comparative Analysis of the Eisenia fetida Gut and Compost Matrix

Vermicomposting is a sustainable biotechnological process that transforms organic waste through the synergistic activity of earthworms, such as Eisenia fetida, and their associated microbiota. This study evaluated bacterial and physicochemical dynamics during the vermicomposting of bovine manure by analyzing the microbial composition of the substrate and the gut of E. fetida at three time points (weeks 0, 6, and 12). The V3–V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced, and microbial diversity was characterized using QIIME2. Significant differences in alpha diversity (observed features, Shannon index, and phylogenetic diversity) and beta diversity indicated active microbial succession. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Actinobacteriota were the dominant phyla, with abundances varying across habitats and over time. A significant enrichment of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and the genera Chryseolinea, Flavobacterium, and Sphingomonas was observed in the manure treatments. In contrast, Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, and the genera Methylobacter, Brevibacillus, Enhygromyxa, and Bacillus, among others, were distinctive of the gut samples and contributed to their dissimilarity from the manure treatments. Simultaneously, the physicochemical parameters indicated progressive substrate stabilization and nutrient enrichment. Notably, the organic matter and total organic carbon contents decreased (from 79.47% to 47.80% and from 46.10% to 27.73%, respectively), whereas the total nitrogen content increased (from 1.70% to 2.23%); these effects reduced the C/N ratio, which is a recognized indicator of maturity, from 27.13 to 12.40. The macronutrient contents also increased, with final values of 1.41% for phosphorus, 1.50% for potassium, 0.89% for magnesium, and 2.81% for calcium. These results demonstrate that vermicomposting modifies microbial communities and enhances substrate quality, supporting its use as a biofertilizer for sustainable agriculture, soil restoration, and agrochemical reduction. Membrane transporters play a crucial role in any cell. Identifying the substrates they translocate across membranes is important for many fields of research, such as metabolomics, pharmacology, and biotechnology. In this study, we leverage recent advances in deep learning, such as amino acid sequence embeddings with protein language models (pLMs), highly accurate 3D structure predictions with AlphaFold 2, and structure-encoding 3Di sequences from FoldSeek, for predicting substrates of membrane transporters. We test new deep learning features derived from both sequence and structure, and compare them to the previously best-performing protein encodings, which were made up of amino acid k-mer frequencies and evolutionary information from PSSMs. Furthermore, we compare the performance of these features either using a previously developed SVM model, or with a regularized feedforward neural network (FNN). When evaluating these models on sugar and amino acid carriers in A. thaliana, as well as on three types of ion channels in human, we found that both the DL-based features and the FNN model led to a better and more consistent classification performance compared to previous methods. Direct encodings of 3D structures with Foldseek, as well as structural embeddings with ProstT5, matched the performance of state-of-the-art amino acid sequence embeddings calculated with the ProtT5-XL model when used as input for the FNN classifier. Background: The education process for newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) patients and their families, primarily led by diabetes specialist nurses, is essential for gaining knowledge about the disease and its management. However, few assessment tools have been employed to evaluate long-term knowledge retention among T1D patients years after diagnosis. Methods: We developed a 20-question test to assess the knowledge of patients and their families at the conclusion of the initial education process and again 6–12 months later. Demographic and clinical data were also collected. Statistical analyses included comparisons between the first and second test results, as well as evaluation of potential contributing factors. The internal consistency and construct validity of the questionnaire were evaluated. Results: Forty-four patients completed both assessments, with a median interval of 11.5 months between them. The average score on the first test was 88.6, which declined to 82.7 on the second assessment (p < 0.001). In univariate analysis, factors positively associated with higher scores included Jewish ethnicity, lower HbA1c levels, and shorter hospitalization duration. Multivariate analysis revealed that parents had lower odds of experiencing a significant score decline compared to patients. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.69, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified eight components accounting for 67.1% of the total variance. Conclusions: Healthcare providers should consider offering re-education to patients and their families approximately one year after diagnosis, with particular attention to high-risk populations during the initial education phase. Further studies are needed to examine this tool’s performance in larger cohorts. Full article

Chiroptera includes over 1400 bat species, with at least 35 of these present in Italy. Due to their role as Lyssavirus reservoirs, bats found dead, with and without signs suggestive of this infection, are routinely submitted to the laboratory network of the Istituti Zooprofilattici Sperimentali in the framework of the rabies national passive and active surveillance program. Carcasses and biological samples collected from January to December 2021 in Latium and Tuscany, regions of our jurisdiction, were further screened for the presence of Coronaviruses (CoVs) and Herpesviruses using pan-family virus PCR tests, and relative PCR products were Sanger sequenced. Genetic characterization through sequencing detected AlphaCoVs in Miniopterus schreibersii and Beta- and Gammaherpesviruses in Tadarida teniotis. Samples were also submitted to bat genetic species identification. Full article

The cecal microbiota is essential for intestinal health and performance. This study describes the succession patterns of the cecal microbiota in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) until 42 days of age. Sixty quails were raised using standard conditions and fed corn–soybean meal diets. Cecal contents were sampled from five birds weekly from 7 to 42 days of age and submitted to Illumina 16S rRNA sequencing for metabarcoding analysis. Diversity and functional prediction were carried out with QIIME2, PICRUSt2, STAMP and MicrobiomeAnalyst 2.0. Firmicutes increased from 50% at 7 days to more than 80% at 42 days, whereas Bacteroidota decreased from 45% to 12% in the same period. Alpha diversity progressively increased with age, indicating a richer and more balanced microbiota at later ages. Genera such as Bacteroides were predominant in the beginning and later were replaced by Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcus and Faecalibacterium. These developmental taxonomic features aligned with significant shifts in ten metabolic pathways identified by prediction, revealing a transition from biosynthetic functions to complex carbohydrate metabolism and cell wall biosynthesis. The first seven days are considered a critical window for probiotics intervention, which may favor the establishment of a microbiota that is more stable and beneficial to quail performance. Gut Microbial Composition on Dienogest Therapy in Patients with Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting approximately 10% of women of reproductive age, characterized by pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and infertility. Emerging evidence suggests a potential link between gut microbiota dysbiosis and endometriosis pathogenesis, mediated through hormonal regulation, immune modulation, and systemic inflammation. Dienogest (DNG) is widely used for endometriosis management, but its effects on gut microbiota remain underexplored. This study investigates the impact of DNG on gut microbial composition in endometriosis patients, aiming to elucidate its therapeutic mechanisms beyond hormonal modulation. DNG therapy led to a significant reduction in the Bacillota/Bacteroidota ratio (p = 0.0421), driven by decreased Staphylococcus spp. (p = 0.0244) and increased commensal bacteria such as Lactobacillus spp. and Collinsella aerofaciens (p = 0.049). Species richness and alpha diversity indices showed a non-significant upward trend. Notably, C. aerofaciens, a butyrate producer linked to gut barrier integrity, was detected twice as frequently during therapy. The study also observed reductions in facultative anaerobes like Enterococcus spp. and a trend toward higher titers of beneficial Bacteroidota. This study provides the first evidence that DNG therapy modulates gut microbiota in endometriosis patients, favoring a composition associated with anti-inflammatory and barrier-protective effects. The observed shifts—reduced opportunistic pathogens and increased symbionts—suggest a novel mechanism for DNG’s efficacy, potentially involving the microbial regulation of estrogen metabolism and immune responses. Hospitality in Crisis: Evaluating the Downside Risks and Market Sensitivity of Hospitality REITs

This study evaluates the risk-adjusted performance of Hospitality REITs using multi-factor asset pricing models and downside risk measures with the aim of assessing their diversification potential and crisis sensitivity. Unlike prior studies that examine REITs in aggregate, this study isolates Hospitality REITs to explore their unique cyclical and macroeconomic sensitivities. This study looks at the risk-adjusted performance of Hospitality Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) in relation to more general REIT indexes and the S&P 500 Index. The study reveals that monthly returns of Hospitality REITs increasingly move in tandem with the stock markets during financial crises, which reduces their historical function as portfolio diversifiers. Investing in Hospitality REITs exposes one to the hospitality sector; however, these investments carry notable risks and provide little protection, particularly during economic upheavals. Furthermore, the study reveals that Hospitality REITs underperform on a risk-adjusted basis relative to benchmark indexes. The monthly returns of REITs show significant volatility during the post-COVID-19 era, which causes return-to-risk ratios to be below those of benchmark indexes. Estimates from multi-factor models indicate negative alpha values across conditional models, indicating that macroeconomic variables cause unremunerated risks. This industry shows great sensitivity to market beta and size and value determinants. Hospitality REITs’ susceptibility comes from their showing the most possibility for exceptional losses across asset classes under Value at Risk (VaR) and Conditional Value at Risk (CvaR) downside risk assessments. The findings have implications for investors and portfolio managers, suggesting that Hospitality REITs may not offer consistent diversification benefits during downturns but can serve a tactical role in procyclical investment strategies.
