Taking the Lucaogou Formation in the Junggar Basin as the research object, this study draws on core mineral data, thin-section observations, and geochemical test results to systematically investigate the enrichment mechanism and migration characteristics of shale oil. The findings show that the Lucaogou Formation is primarily composed of Type I and Type II kerogen, with high hydrocarbon-generation potential; its organic matter mainly originates from lacustrine algae, rich in low-carbon alkanes and tricyclic terpanes, and is well-preserved under reducing conditions. The upper and lower “sweet spots” of the Lucaogou Formation each form an independent source–reservoir–seal system. Shale oil in the upper sweet spot is characterized by low density, low viscosity, high wax content, and a relatively high pour point. Reservoir space is dominated by intergranular pores, dissolution pores, and intercrystalline pores, which are well-developed and exhibit relatively high permeability. By contrast, shale oil in the lower sweet spot is marked by high density, high viscosity, low wax content, and a relatively low pour point. Its reservoir space is dominated by dissolution pores and intercrystalline pores, which are unevenly developed and result in poorer permeability. Overall, shale oil enrichment in the Lucaogou Formation is jointly controlled by organic matter source, diagenesis, and sedimentary environment. This study further clarifies the controlling factors for shale oil enrichment in the Lucaogou Formation and provides a scientific basis for the exploration and development of unconventional oil and gas resources. Sustainable hydrocarbons are one of the main methods of decreasing the use of fossil fuels and derivatives, contributing to the mitigation of environmental impacts and greenhouse gas emissions. Circular economic concepts focus on reusing waste by converting it into new products, which are then input again into industrial production lines, thus decreasing the necessity of fossils. Polypropylene-based plastic waste can be depolymerized into smaller chemical chains, producing a liquid phase rich in hydrocarbons. In the same way, triacylglycerol-based waste biomasses can also be converted into renewable hydrocarbons. Our research studied the co-processing of polypropylene (PP) and cottonseed oil dreg (BASOs) waste from the biodiesel industry using a micropyrolysis system at 550 °C, previously validated to predict the scale-up of the process. PP showed the production of alkanes and alkenes, while BASOs also produced carboxylic acids in addition to the PP products. The main impacts were observed in the conversion yields, reaching the highest values of pyrolytic liquid (64%), gas (14%), and solid product (13%) compared to the co-processing mixture of BASO:PP (1:2). Also, in this mixture, the production of carboxylic acids decreased to the lowest value (~10%), improving the conversion to sustainable hydrocarbons. Full article

The development of carbonaceous materials such as biochar has triggered a hot spot in materials application. In this study, a new type of char carbon was developed from raw cigarette filter rods (CFRs) via a carbonization process under moderate conditions (T = 550 °C; tres = 1 h) (CFR char carbon). The produced char was characterized by ATR-FTIR (Attenuated total reflectance—Fourier-transform infrared) spectroscopy, XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis, GC-MS (Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry), FESEM-EDS (Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy—Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) technique, XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and N2 adsorption/desorption (BET) measurements. The obtained carbon material is rich in oxygen-containing functional groups (i.e., C=O, C–O, –C(=O)–CH3, C–O–C, C–OH, and O=C–O, with chemisorbed oxygen), containing significant amounts of calcium (that originates from CaCO3) and silicon (Si), generated by reduction of SiO2. It was found that the formation of char(C)/n-alkane composite material makes that CFR char have a high compressive strength improvement. Moderate carbonization has contributed to the creation of such material that has a fairly high specific surface area (320.93 m2/g), exhibiting a complex hierarchical structure that was characterized by composite Type I/IV(a) isotherm, associated with micro-/mesoporous carbon material. In addition, more directional extensions of this research for future work were proposed, including the implementation of electrochemical research. Full article

Background/Objectives: Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), extensively studied in terrestrial plants with global emissions around 1 PgC yr−1, are also produced by marine organisms. However, benthic species, especially seagrasses, are understudied despite their global distribution (177,000–600,000 km2). This study aims to examine BVOC emissions from key Mediterranean seagrass species (Cymodocea nodosa, Posidonia oceanica, Zostera noltei, and Zostera marina) in marine and coastal lagoon environments. Methods: BVOCs were collected using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) using divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS) fibers and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: An important chemical diversity was found with a total of 92 volatile compounds (61 for Z. noltei, 59 for C. nodosa, 55 for P. oceanica, and 51 for Z. marina), from different biosynthetic pathways (e.g., terpenoids, benzenoids, and fatty acid derivatives) and with several types of chemical functions (e.g., alkanes, esters, aldehydes, and ketones) or heteroatoms (e.g., sulfur). No differences in chemical richness or diversity of compounds were observed between species. The four species shared 29 compounds enabling us to establish a specific chemical footprint for Mediterranean marine plants, including compounds like benzaldehyde, benzeneacetaldehyde, 8-heptadecene, heneicosane, heptadecane, nonadecane, octadecane, pentadecane, tetradecane, and tridecanal. PLS-DA and Heatmap show that the four species presented significantly different chemical profiles. The major compounds per species in relative abundance were isopropyl myristate for C. nodosa (25.6%), DMS for P. oceanica (39.3%), pentadecane for Z. marina (42.9%), and heptadecane for Z. noltei (46%). Conclusions: These results highlight the potential of BVOCs’ emission from seagrass ecosystems and reveal species-specific chemical markers. Full article

The Kuqa Depression is rich in oil and gas resources and serves as a key production area in the Tarim Basin. However, controversy persists over the genesis of oil and gas in the various structural zones of the Kuqa Depression. This study employs natural gas composition analysis, gas carbon isotope analysis and gold pipe thermal simulation experiments, to comprehensively analyze the differences in the genesis and sources of hydrocarbon gas fluid from the eastern and western Kuqa Depression. The results show that the Kuqa Depression is dominated by alkane gas, with an average gas drying coefficient of 95.6, with nitrogen and carbon dioxide as the primary non-hydrocarbon gases. The average of δ13C1, δ13C2 and δ13C3 values in natural gas are −27.70‰, −20.43‰ and −21.75‰, respectively. Based on comprehensive natural gas geochemical maps, the CO2 in the natural gas from the Tudong and Dabei areas, as well as the KT-1 well of the Kuqa Depression, is thought to be of organic origin. Additionally, natural gas formation in the Tudong area is relatively simple, consisting entirely of thermally generated coal gas derived from the initial cracking of kerogen. The natural gas in the KT-1 well and the Dabei area are mixed gasses, formed by the initial cracking of kerogen from highly evolved lacustrine and coal-bearing source rocks, exhibiting characteristics resembling those of crude oil cracking gas. The methane (CH4) content of natural gas in the Dabei area is high and the carbon isotopes are unusually heavy. Considering the regional geological background, potential source rock characteristics and geochemical features may be related to the large-scale invasion of dry gas contributed by CH4 from highly evolved, underlying coal-bearing source rocks. Consequently, the CH4 content in the mixed gas is generally high (Ln (C1/C2) can reach up to 5.38), while the relative content of heavy components is low, though remains relatively unchanged. Thus, the map of the relative content of heavy components still reflects the characteristics of the original gas genesis (initial cracking of kerogen). Mixed-source gas was analyzed using thermal simulation experiments and natural gas composition ratio diagrams. The contributions of natural gas from deep, highly evolved coal-bearing source rocks in the KT-1 well and the Dabei area accounted for more than 90% and approximately 60%, respectively. This analysis provides theoretical guidance for natural gas exploration in the research area. Full article

Microorganisms within insects play a vital role in maintaining the basal physiological functions of the insects, with olfactory signals as critical components of insect survival strategies. Leptocybe invasa (L. invasa), an invasive alien pest inflicting significant damage to eucalyptus trees, harbors a rich and varied bacterial community within its body. However, the impact of its endogenous bacteria and their microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (mVOCs) on the behavioral preferences of L. invasa remains unexplored to date. This study focused on nine cultivable and dominant endogenous bacterial strains within L. invasa. Using a Y-tube olfactometer, we investigated the behavioral responses of female L. invasa to the mVOCs emitted by these bacteria. Concurrently, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) was employed to quantify the mVOCs produced by these endogenous bacteria. Our findings revealed that Staphylococcus sp. exhibited the highest attractiveness of L. invasa, whereas Microbacterium sp. and E. cloacae exerted the most significant avoidance effects. The analysis of the mVOCs further highlighted the significance of aldehyde compounds, notably 2,3,6-trichlorobenzaldehyde, and alkane compounds, such as eicosane, in mediating the repellency and attraction effects. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of the invasion mechanism of L. invasa and provide a scientific basis for developing novel biopesticides or elicitors. Full article

The present study focused on the determination of color, flavor, taste, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) changes of shrimp paste fermented for 1, 2, 3, and 8 years by E-nose, E-tongue, and headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). During fermentation, the color of shrimp paste turned dark brown with decreases in L*, a*, and b* values. Inorganic sulfide odor was dominant in all fermented samples. The umami, richness, and aftertaste-B reached a maximum in year 3 of fermentation. A total of 182 volatiles, including long-chain alkanes, esters, aldehydes, olefins, ketones, acids, furans, and pyrazines, were detected. Sixteen VOCs including dimethyl disulfide, methional, trimethyl-pyrazine, (E,E)-2,4-heptadienal, benzeneacetaldehyde were selected as flavor markers. Correlation analysis showed that 94 VOCs were related to saltiness while 40, 17, 21, 22, and 24 VOCs contributed to richness, umami, aftertase-B, sourness, and bitterness, respectively. These novel data may help in optimizing fermentation duration to achieve target flavor indicators in opossum shrimp paste production. Full article

Kelp (Laminaria japonica) is an important marine resource with low cost and rich nutrition. However, its fishy odor has compromised consumer acceptance. In this study, the effects of fermentation with Lactobacillus plantarum FSB7, Pediococcus pentosaceus CICC 21862 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae SK1.008 on fishy notes in kelp was studied using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) and odor activity values (OAVs). Forty-four volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified in unfermented kelp, most of which were aldehydes, followed by alkanes, alcohols and ketones. Among them were 19 volatile compounds with OAV greater than one. Substances containing α,β-unsaturated carbonyl structure (1-Octen-3-one, (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal, (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, etc.) are the main contributors to kelp fishy odor. The number of VOCs in kelp samples fermented by L. plantarum, P. pentosaceus and S. cerevisiae were decreased to 22, 24 and 34, respectively. GC-IMS shows that the fingerprint of the S. cerevisiae fermented sample had the most obvious changes. The disappearance of 1-octen-3-one and a 91% decrease in unsaturated aldehydes indicate that S. cerevisiae was the most effective, while L. plantarum and P. pentosaceus only reached 43–55%. The decrease in kelp fishy notes was related to the decrease in α,β-unsaturated carbonyl groups. The experimental results show that odor reduction with fermentation is feasible. Full article

Acacia Seyal gum (ASG), also known as gum Arabic, is an antioxidant-rich soluble fiber. ASG has been reported to have many biological activities, including anticancer, antidiabetic, antiulcer, and immunomodulatory activity. Extraction of bioactive compounds from ASG is commonly performed using conventional extraction methods. However, these techniques have certain limitation in terms of extraction time, energy, and solvent requirements. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) could be used as an alternative technique to extract bioactive compounds in less time, at low temperature, and with less energy and solvent requirements. In this study, the UAE extraction of ASG was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). A face-centered central composite design (FCCCD) was used to monitor the effect of different independent factors of ultrasound operation (sonication time, temperature, and solvent ratio) on ASG extraction yield. In addition, screening and characterization of phytochemicals in 60% ethanol ASG extract was carried out using Raman microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (GC-TOFMS) analysis. The results indicated that, under optimal conditions (extraction time 45 min, extraction temperature 40 °C, and solid–liquid ratio of 1:25 g/mL), the yield of ASG was 75.87% ± 0.10. This yield was reasonably close to the predicted yield of 75.39% suggested by the design of experiment. The ANOVA revealed that the model was highly significant due to the low probability value (p < 0.0001). Raman spectrum fingerprint detected polysaccharides, such as galactose and glucose, and protein like lysine and proline, while FTIR spectrum revealed the presence of functional groups peaks value of alkanes, aldehydes, aliphatic amines, and phenol. GC-TOFMS spectroscopic detected the presence of strong d-galactopyranose, carotenoid, and lycopene antioxidant compounds. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the UAE technique is an efficient method to achieve a high yield of ASG extracts. The selected model is adequate to optimize the extraction of several chemical compounds reported in this study. Full article

Methane and light (C2–C5) alkane fluxes were measured from three geologic seepage sites in Southern California during May and June of 2019. Samples were collected from visible macroseeps in Carpinteria, McKittrick, and Ojai using an aluminum flux chamber with attached stainless-steel canisters and were analyzed for C1 to C5 alkanes via gas chromatography. Carpinteria fluxes were characterized by a lower percentage of volatile organic compounds relative to methane but greatly enhanced (~20:1) ratios of i-butane to n-butane. McKittrick and Ojai exhibited less methane-rich emissions and i-butane to n-butane ratios of less than 2:1. The differences between gas ratios observed at the surface and those previously reported from underground gas deposits at Ojai suggest that gases undergo alterations to their molecular composition between deposit and surface. The ratios of emitted gases in this study show that not only does geologic seepage have a much different volatile organic compound profile than oil and natural gas extraction and pipeline natural gas, but also that individual geologic seepage locations exhibit large variability. The Yushui ore deposit, located in the middle section of the Yong’an-Meixian Hercynian depression, is a medium-sized Cu-polymetallic massive sulphide deposit in Eastern Guangdong Province, South China. This deposit is characterized by unusually high copper grade (up to 50–60 wt. % Cu). Other metallic elements, such as lead, zinc and silver, are also economically important in the Yushui ore bodies. The aim of this study was to apply N2–Ar–He systematics, together with organic gases (light-hydrocarbon tracers), to constrain the origin and evolution of ore-forming fluids. The helium-argon isotopes and trace gas compositions of fluid inclusions trapped within metal sulphide minerals were measured for a number of bonanza ores from the Yushui deposit. The noble gas concentrations in the studied samples vary over one to two orders of magnitude (4He: 2.27–160.00 × 10−5 cm3 STP g−1; 3He: 0.53–34.88 × 10−12 cm3 STP g−1; 40Ar: 6.28–37.82 × 10−7 cm3 STP g−1; 36Ar: 1.25–10.40 × 10−9 cm3 STP g−1). Our data show a narrow range of 3He/4He ratios from 0.006 to 0.056 Ra (~0.026 Ra on average, n = 8), which are considerably lower than the modern atmospheric end-member value; whereas the 40Ar/36Ar ratios (ranging from 333.76 to 501.68, with an average of 397.53) are significantly greater than that of air-saturated water. Most of the bornite samples have somewhat higher 3He/4He ratios of trapped fluids when compared to chalcopyrite. Overall, these He-Ar results are well within the range of crustal reservoir, thus implying a predominantly crustal source (originated from Caledonian basement) for ore-forming solutions, with little contribution from mantle-derived fluids. Analysis of the N2–Ar–He composition in Cu-rich sulphides indicates that the Yushui ore-forming fluids were probably derived from formation water (or basinal hot brines). Moreover, organic gas species identified in sulphide-hosted fluid inclusions are mainly composed of C1–C4 alkanes, while the concentrations of unsaturated olefins and aromatic hydrocarbons are very low. In particular, most chalcopyrite samples with relatively low 3He/4He ratios (0.006–0.016 Ra) and 40Ar*/4He values (0.0002–0.0012) are generally characterized by very high CO2/CH4 ratios (~60–102). All these suggest that main-stage Cu-Ag metallogenic processes might have not been affected by high-temperature magmatic activities or superimposed by strong metamorphic overprinting, although some chalcopyrite-rich ores appear to be influenced by later stage hydrothermal processes. In summary, neither magmatic input nor convecting seawater has played an important role in the formation of Yushui copper-polymetallic deposit. The massive sulphide ore bodies were products of water–rock interaction between metal-bearing basinal brines and the host sedimentary strata. Full article

It is important to convert alkane-rich gases, such as coke oven gas, to value-added chemicals rather than direct emission or combustion. Abundant nitrogen/oxygen substances are present in the actual alkane-rich gases. However, the research about how they influence the conversion in the pyrolysis process is missing. In this work, a systematic investigation on the effect of various nitrogen/oxygen-containing substances, including N2, CO, and CO2,on the pyrolysis of CH4 to C2H2 was performed by a self-made 50 kW rotating arc thermal plasma reactor, and the pyrolysis of a simulated coke oven gas as a model of alkane-rich mixing gas was conducted as well. It was found that the presence of N2 and CO2 was not conducive to the main reaction of alkane pyrolysis for C2H2, while CO, as a stable equilibrium product, had little effect on the cracking reaction. Consequently, it is suggested that a pretreatment process of removing N2 and CO2 should be present before pyrolysis. Both input power and feed rate had considerable effect on the pyrolysis of the simulated coke oven gas, and a C2H2 selectivity of 91.2% and a yield of 68.3% could be obtained at an input power of 17.9 kW. The composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oils which were obtained from agarwood originated from Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.) Gilg stimulated by the chemical method (S1) were characterized, taking wild agarwood (S2) and healthy trees (S3) respectively as the positive and negative controls. The chemical composition of S1 was investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The essential oil of S1 showed a similar composition to that of S2, being rich in sesquiterpenes and aromatic constituents. However, the essential oil of S3 was abundant in fatty acids and alkanes. Essential oils of S1 and S2 had better inhibition activities towards Bacillus subtilis and Staphyloccus aureus, compared with essential oil of S3. Escherichia coli was not sensitive to any of them.
