Monitoring crop damage caused by wildlife remains a significant challenge in agricultural management, particularly in the case of large-scale monocultures such as maize. The given study presents a semi-automated process for detecting wildlife-induced damage using RGB imagery acquired from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The method is designed for non-specialist users and is fully integrated within the QGIS platform. The proposed approach involves calculating three vegetation indices—Excess Green (ExG), Green Leaf Index (GLI), and Modified Green-Red Vegetation Index (MGRVI)—based on a standardized orthomosaic generated from RGB images collected via UAV. Subsequently, an unsupervised k-means clustering algorithm was applied to divide the field into five vegetation vigor classes. Within each class, 25% of the pixels with the lowest average index values were preliminarily classified as damaged. A dedicated QGIS plugin enables drone data analysts (Drone Data Analysts—DDAs) to adjust index thresholds, based on visual interpretation, interactively. The method was validated on a 50-hectare maize field, where 7 hectares of damage (15% of the area) were identified. The results indicate a high level of agreement between the automated and manual classifications, with an overall accuracy of 81%. The highest concentration of damage occurred in the “moderate” and “low” vigor zones. Final products included vigor classification maps, binary damage masks, and summary reports in HTML and DOCX formats with visualizations and statistical data. The results confirm the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed RGB-based procedure for crop damage assessment. The method offers a repeatable, cost-effective, and field-operable alternative to multispectral or AI-based approaches, making it suitable for integration with precision agriculture practices and wildlife population management. The integration of digital twin technology with robotic automation holds significant promise for advancing sustainable horticulture in controlled environment agriculture. This article presents DigiHortiRobot, a novel AI-driven digital twin architecture tailored for hydroponic greenhouse systems. The proposed framework integrates real-time sensing, predictive modeling, task planning, and dual-arm robotic execution within a modular, IoT-enabled infrastructure. DigiHortiRobot is structured into three progressive implementation phases: (i) monitoring and data acquisition through a multimodal perception system; (ii) decision support and virtual simulation for scenario analysis and intervention planning; and (iii) autonomous execution with feedback-based model refinement. The Physical Layer encompasses crops, infrastructure, and a mobile dual-arm robot; the virtual layer incorporates semantic modeling and simulation environments; and the synchronization layer enables continuous bi-directional communication via a nine-tier IoT architecture inspired by FIWARE standards. A robot task assignment algorithm is introduced to support operational autonomy while maintaining human oversight. The system is designed to optimize horticultural workflows such as seeding and harvesting while allowing farmers to interact remotely through cloud-based interfaces. Compared to previous digital agriculture approaches, DigiHortiRobot enables closed-loop coordination among perception, simulation, and action, supporting real-time task adaptation in dynamic environments. Experimental validation in a hydroponic greenhouse confirmed robust performance in both seeding and harvesting operations, achieving over 90% accuracy in localizing target elements and successfully executing planned tasks. The platform thus provides a strong foundation for future research in predictive control, semantic environment modeling, and scalable deployment of autonomous systems for high-value crop production. Moringa oleifera (MO), a nutritionally and pharmacologically potent species, is emerging as a sustainable candidate for applications across bioenergy, agriculture, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and biomedicine. This review explores recent advances in MO-based biotechnologies, highlighting novel extraction methods, green nanotechnology, and clinical trial findings. Although MO’s resilience offers promise for climate-smart agriculture and public health, challenges remain in standardizing cultivation and verifying therapeutic claims. This work underscores MO’s translational potential and the need for integrative, interdisciplinary research. MO is used in advanced materials, like electrospun fibers and biopolymers, showing filtration, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties—important for the biomedical industry and environmental remediation. In textiles, it serves as an eco-friendly alternative for wastewater treatment and yarn sizing. Biotechnological advancements, such as genome sequencing and in vitro culture, enhance traits and metabolite production. MO supports green biotechnology through sustainable agriculture, nanomaterials, and biocomposites. MO shows potential for disease management, immune support, metabolic health, and dental care, but requires further clinical trials for validation. Its resilience is suitable for land restoration and food security in arid areas. AI and deep learning enhance Moringa breeding, allowing for faster, cost-effective development of improved varieties. This review comprehensively examines the application of deep learning technologies across the entire soybean production chain, encompassing areas such as disease and pest identification, weed detection, crop phenotype recognition, yield prediction, and intelligent operations. By systematically analyzing mainstream deep learning models, optimization strategies (e.g., model lightweighting, transfer learning), and sensor data fusion techniques, the review identifies their roles and performances in complex agricultural environments. It also highlights key challenges including data quality limitations, difficulties in real-world deployment, and the lack of standardized evaluation benchmarks. In response, promising directions such as reinforcement learning, self-supervised learning, interpretable AI, and multi-source data fusion are proposed. Specifically for soybean automation, future advancements are expected in areas such as high-precision disease and weed localization, real-time decision-making for variable-rate spraying and harvesting, and the integration of deep learning with robotics and edge computing to enable autonomous field operations. This review provides valuable insights and future prospects for promoting intelligent, efficient, and sustainable development in soybean production through deep learning. Full article

Smart farming has emerged as a promising solution to address challenges such as climate change, population growth, and limited agricultural infrastructure. To enhance the operational efficiency of smart farms, this paper proposes an integrated system that combines Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The proposed framework forecasts future resource shortages using an RNN model and recent environmental data collected from the field. Based on these forecasts, the system schedules a resource supply plan and determines the UAV path by considering both dynamic energy consumption and priority levels, aiming to maximize the efficiency of the resource supply. Experimental results show that the proposed integrated smart farm framework achieves an average reduction of 81.08% in the supply miss rate. This paper demonstrates the potential of an integrated AI- and UAV-based smart farm management system in achieving both environmental responsiveness and operational optimization. Full article

The integration of artificial intelligence into sustainable agriculture holds significant potential to transform traditional agricultural practices. This transformation of agricultural practices through AI directly intersects with several critical sustainable development goals, such as Climate Action (SDG13), Life Below Water (SDG 14), and Life on Land (SDG 15). However, such implementations are fraught with multifaceted challenges. This study explores the technological, organizational, and environmental challenges confronting top management in the agricultural sector utilizing the technological–organizational–environmental framework. As interest in AI-enabled sustainable initiatives continues to rise globally, this exploration is timely and relevant. The study employs an interpretive case study approach, drawing insights from a carbon sequestration project within the agricultural sector where AI technologies have been integrated to support sustainability goals. The findings reveal six key challenges: sustainable policy inconsistency, AI experts lacking farming knowledge, farmers’ resistance to change, limited knowledge and expertise to deploy AI, missing links in the existing system, and transition costs, which often hinder the achievement of long-term sustainability outcomes. This study emphasizes the importance of field realities and cross-disciplinary collaboration to optimize the role of AI in sustainability efforts. Full article

This research addresses the enhancement of operational efficiency in apple-picking robots through the design of a bimanual spatial configuration enabling obstacle avoidance in contemporary orchard environments. A parallel coordinated harvesting paradigm for dual-arm systems was introduced, leading to the construction and validation of a six-degree-of-freedom bimanual apple-harvesting robot. Leveraging the kinematic architecture of the AUBO-i5 manipulator, three spatial layout configurations for dual-arm systems were evaluated, culminating in the adoption of a “workspace-overlapping Type B” arrangement. A functional prototype of the bimanual apple-harvesting system was subsequently fabricated. The study further involved developing control architectures for two end-effector types: a compliant gripper and a vacuum-based suction mechanism, with corresponding operational protocols established. A networked communication framework for parallel arm coordination was implemented via Ethernet switching technology, enabling both independent and synchronized bimanual operation. Additionally, an intersystem communication protocol was formulated to integrate the robotic vision system with the dual-arm control architecture, establishing a modular parallel execution model between visual perception and motion control modules. A coordinated bimanual harvesting strategy was formulated, incorporating real-time trajectory and pose monitoring of the manipulators. Kinematic simulations were executed to validate the feasibility of this strategy. Field evaluations in modern Red Fuji apple orchards assessed multidimensional harvesting performance, revealing 85.6% and 80% success rates for the suction and gripper-based arms, respectively. Single-fruit retrieval averaged 7.5 s per arm, yielding an overall system efficiency of 3.75 s per fruit. These findings advance the technological foundation for intelligent apple-harvesting systems, offering methodologies for the evolution of precision agronomic automation. Full article

Plant growth monitoring is a complex and challenging task, which depends on a variety of environmental variables, such as temperature, humidity, nutrient availability, and solar radiation. Advances in optical sensors have significantly enhanced data collection on plant growth. These developments enable the optimization of agricultural practices and crop management through the integration of artificial vision techniques. Despite advances in the application of these technologies, limitations and challenges persist. This review aims to analyze the current state-of-the-art methodologies for using artificial vision and optical sensors in plant growth assessment. The systematic review was conducted following the guidelines for Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Relevant studies were analyzed from the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The main findings indicate that data collection in agricultural environments is challenging. This is due to the variability of climatic conditions, the heterogeneity of crops, and the difficulty in obtaining accurately and homogeneously labeled datasets. Additionally, the integration of artificial vision models and advanced sensors would enable the assessment of plant responses to these environmental factors. The advantages and limitations were examined, as well as proposed research areas to further contribute to the improvement and expansion of these emerging technologies for plant growth assessment. Finally, a relevant research line focuses on evaluating AI-based models on low-power embedded platforms to develop accessible and efficient decision-making solutions in both agricultural and urban environments. Climate change presents urgent and complex challenges to agricultural sustainability and food security, particularly in regions reliant on resource-intensive staple crops. Smart agriculture—through the integration of crop modeling, satellite remote sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI)—offers data-driven strategies to enhance productivity, optimize input use, and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study introduces Farmdee-Mesook, a mobile-first smart agriculture platform designed specifically for Thai rice farmers. The platform leverages AquaCrop simulation, open-access satellite data, and localized agronomic models to deliver real-time, field-specific recommendations. Usability-focused design and no-cost access facilitate its widespread adoption, particularly among smallholders. Empirical results show that platform users achieved yield increases of up to 37%, reduced agrochemical costs by 59%, and improved water productivity by 44% under alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation schemes. These outcomes underscore the platform’s role as a scalable, cost-effective solution for operationalizing climate-smart agriculture. Farmdee-Mesook demonstrates that digital technologies, when contextually tailored and institutionally supported, can serve as critical enablers of climate adaptation and sustainable agricultural transformation. Evaluating the approach of the apple’s maturity is a crucial aspect of enhancing agricultural efficiency, especially in the context of harvesting. Traditional approaches depend on fixed criteria that fail to account for the natural growth conditions of the fruit. To address this limitation, a fuzzy logic-based system was introduced to evaluate apple ripeness. This model highlights a notable disparity between these factors and maturity. It incorporates the essential elements anticipated to correlate with ripeness, while maintaining the integrity of the inputs to create a holistic framework for assessing maturity. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is transforming agriculture by enabling data-driven plant disease monitoring and decision support. Soil-borne mosaic wheat virus (SBWMV) is a soil-transmitted virus disease that poses a serious threat to wheat production across multiple ecological zones. Due to the regional variability in environmental conditions and symptom expressions, accurately evaluating the severity of wheat soil-borne mosaic (WSBM) infections remains a persistent challenge. To address this, the problem is formulated as large-scale group decision-making process (LSGDM), where each planting plot is treated as an independent virtual decision maker, providing its own severity assessments. This modeling approach reflects the spatial heterogeneity of the disease and enables a structured mechanism to reconcile divergent evaluations. First, for each site, field observation of infection symptoms are recorded and represented using intuitionistic fuzzy numbers (IFNs) to capture uncertainty in detection. Second, a Bayesian graph convolutional networks model (Bayesian-GCN) is used to construct a spatial trust propagation mechanism, inferring missing trust values and preserving regional dependencies. Third, an enhanced spectral clustering method is employed to group plots with similar symptoms and assessment behaviors. Fourth, a feedback mechanism is introduced to iteratively adjust plot-level evaluations based on a set of defined agricultural decision indicators sets using a multi-granulation rough set (ADISs-MGRS). Once consensus is reached, final rankings of candidate plots are generated from indicators, providing an interpretable and evidence-based foundation for targeted prevention strategies. By using the WSBM dataset collected in 2017–2018 from Walla Walla Valley, Oregon/Washington State border, the United States of America, and performing data augmentation for validation, along with comparative experiments and sensitivity analysis, this study demonstrates that the AI-driven LSGDM model integrating enhanced spectral clustering and ADISs-MGRS feedback mechanisms outperforms traditional models in terms of consensus efficiency and decision robustness. This provides valuable support for multi-party decision making in complex agricultural contexts. Full article

Cruciferous vegetables are popular in Asian dishes. However, striped flea beetles prefer to feed on leaves, which can damage the appearance of crops and reduce their economic value. Due to the lack of pest monitoring, the occurrence of pests is often irregular and unpredictable. Regular and quantitative spraying of pesticides for pest control is an alternative method. Nevertheless, this requires manual execution and is inefficient. This paper presents a system powered by solar energy, utilizing batteries and supercapacitors for energy storage to support the implementation of edge AI devices in outdoor environments. Raspberry Pi is utilized for artificial intelligence image recognition and the Internet of Things (IoT). YOLOv5 is implemented on the edge device, Raspberry Pi, for detecting striped flea beetles, and StyleGAN3 is also utilized for data augmentation in the proposed system. The recognition accuracy reaches 85.4%, and the results are transmitted to the server through a 4G network. The experimental results indicate that the system can operate effectively for an extended period. This system enhances sustainability and reliability and greatly improves the practicality of deploying smart pest detection technology in remote or resource-limited agricultural areas. In subsequent applications, drones can plan routes for pesticide spraying based on the distribution of pests. Full article

Rice lodging severely affects crop growth, yield, and mechanized harvesting efficiency. The accurate detection and quantification of lodging areas are crucial for precision agriculture and timely field management. However, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based lodging detection faces challenges such as complex backgrounds, variable lighting, and irregular lodging patterns. To address these issues, this study proposes SWRD–YOLO, a lightweight instance segmentation model that enhances feature extraction and fusion using advanced convolution and attention mechanisms. The model employs an optimized loss function to improve localization accuracy, achieving precise lodging area segmentation. Additionally, a grid-based lodging ratio estimation method is introduced, dividing images into fixed-size grids to calculate local lodging proportions and aggregate them for robust overall severity assessment. Evaluated on a self-built rice lodging dataset, the model achieves 94.8% precision, 88.2% recall, 93.3% mAP@0.5, and 91.4% F1 score, with real-time inference at 16.15 FPS on an embedded NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX device. Compared to the baseline YOLOv8n-seg, precision, recall, mAP@0.5, and F1 score improved by 8.2%, 16.5%, 12.8%, and 12.8%, respectively. These results confirm the model’s effectiveness and potential for deployment in intelligent crop monitoring and sustainable agriculture. Full article

Agriculture 5.0 represents a shift towards a more sustainable agricultural model, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and blockchain technologies to enhance productivity and resource management, with an emphasis on social and environmental resilience. This article explores how the evolution of wireless technologies to sixth-generation networks (6G) can support innovation in Colombia’s agricultural sector and foster rural advancement. The study follows three main phases: search, analysis, and selection of information. In the search phase, key government policies, spectrum management strategies, and the relevant literature from 2020 to 2025 were reviewed. The analysis phase addresses challenges such as spectrum regulation and infrastructure deployment within the context of a developing country. Finally, the selection phase evaluates technological readiness and policy frameworks. Findings suggest that 6G could revolutionize Colombian agriculture by improving connectivity, enabling real-time monitoring, and facilitating precision farming, especially in rural areas with limited infrastructure. Successful 6G deployment could boost agricultural productivity, reduce socioeconomic disparities, and foster sustainable rural development, contingent on aligned public policies, infrastructure investments, and human capital development. Insect pests remain a major threat to agricultural productivity, particularly in open-field cropping systems where conventional monitoring methods are labor-intensive and lack scalability. This study presents the design, implementation, and field evaluation of a neural network-guided smart trap specifically developed to monitor and selectively capture nocturnal insect pests under real agricultural conditions. The proposed trap integrates light and rain sensors, servo-controlled mechanical gates, and a single-layer perceptron neural network deployed on an ATmega-2560 microcontroller by Microchip Technology Inc. (Chandler, AZ, USA). The perceptron processes normalized sensor inputs to autonomously decide, in real time, whether to open or close the gate, thereby enhancing the selectivity of insect capture. The system features a removable tray containing a food-based attractant and yellow and green LEDs designed to lure target species such as moths and flies from the orders Lepidoptera and Diptera. Field trials were conducted between June and August 2023 in La Barca, Jalisco, Mexico, under diverse environmental conditions. Captured insects were analyzed and classified using the iNaturalist platform, with the successful identification of key pest species including Tetanolita floridiana, Synchlora spp., Estigmene acrea, Sphingomorpha chlorea, Gymnoscelis rufifasciata, and Musca domestica, while minimizing the capture of non-target organisms such as Carpophilus spp., Hexagenia limbata, and Chrysoperla spp. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal–Wallis test confirmed significant differences in capture rates across environmental conditions. The results highlight the potential of this low-cost device to improve pest monitoring accuracy, and lay the groundwork for the future integration of more advanced AI-based classification and species recognition systems targeting nocturnal Lepidoptera and other pest insects.
